  • Updated March 16, 2022

People like to stereotype us Midwesterns as landlocked prisoners, living among the cornfields.

In fact, if you’re looking to take a road trip from Minneapolis, you’ve got all sorts of awesome options!

Whether you’re looking for a short drive that can be finished in a day or a week-long, cross-country excursion, this guide compiles the 12 best road trips from Minneapolis.

We’ve been on most of these road trips ourselves, which is why you’ll also find maps plotting out our favorite stops along the way.

Happy driving!

1. The Quick North Shore Trip to Duluth, MN (with a stop at Banning State Park)

2. the weekend lake retreat to brainerd / nisswa, mn, 3. the short scenic drive to lake pepin, 1. the best road trip for families: wisconsin dells, wi, 2. drive to two unique small towns: lanesboro, mn & decorah, ia, 3. the closest, most underrated city: des moines, ia, 1. the full north shore experience, 2. the big city experience: minneapolis to chicago (and milwaukee), 3. wisconin’s premier getaway: door county, wi, 4. minneapolis to the upper peninsula, mi, 5. the nearby national park: badlands national park, sd, 1. the bucketlist roadtrip from minneapolis: the great river road, short 1 day road trips from minneapolis (about 2 hours).

Personally, I think it’s a stretch to call less than 3 hours of car-time a “road trip.” As a fan of multi-day treks across the country, I’d consider these short jaunts to be more like day-trips. (We’ve got an article all about the best day trips from Minneapolis , too!)

But in any case, sometimes you’re just looking for a quick getaway from hustle and bustle of Minneapolis. If that’s you, here are a few of the best short drives from the Twin Cities.

They’re all about two hours one way, and we’ve done our best to include multiple stops along the way… you know, for maximum adventuring.

As they say, Duluth is “The Gateway to Lake Superior.”

I actually have no idea if people say that, but they should!

Duluth is idyllic old shipping town that sits at the southernmost tip of Minnesota’s one and only Great Lake. Duluth’s rich history means you’ll find plenty of historic charm and irreplaceable character. Watch ships pass under the 120 year old Aerial Lift bridge, climb the 80 foot tall Enger Tower , tour the historic Glensheen Mansion , or step aboard the 610 foot long SS William A Irvin .

Despite all the history, Duluth has seen a revitalization in recent years, and the town is now packed-full of trendy shops and new craft breweries and distilleries. Many of which can be enjoyed while looking over the beautiful shores of Lake Superior!

The drive:

To get to Duluth, you’re looking at just over 2 hours one way. It’s an easy, if not uneventful, drive up 35E North.

For a good-halfway point on your road trip, consider stopping at Banning State Park . It’s right around 1.5 hours from Minneapolis and famous for its beautiful rock formations, waterfalls, and white water rapids.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 154 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 2 hours, 20 minutes
  • Banning State Park (1 hour, 30 minutes)

When it comes to the best vacation lakes in Minnesota , the Brainerd Lakes area , which comprises the neighboring towns of Brainerd and Nisswa, MN, is probably the most popular weekend retreat for city-dwellers.

If you’re looking a road trip to “the lake” this drive has your name all over it.

This area is teeming with dozens of beautiful Minnesota lakes, each one with plenty of lodging options that range from full-out resort to secluded cabin in the woods. If it’s not enough to just unplug at the lake, check out the nearby small towns of Brainerd and Nisswa.

Brainerd is one of the largest “cities” in Northern Minnesota, which still makes it a small town by any definition. And Nisswa is especially charming, with a quint main-street that’s stocked full plenty of craft breweries, bars, and shops.

The drive to Brainerd is a quick 2 hours and 15 minutes. Obviously, you can easily do this in one shot, but if you’d like to take a more leisurely pace, you have a couple options for stops along the way:

  • Taking 169 North will have you hugging the coast of Mille Lacs Lake, one of the biggest lakes in Minnesota. Not surprisingly, Mille Lacs has plenty of attractions all on its own, including one of the closest casinos to the Twin Cities .
  • Or you can veer off to US-10 W and head through the interesting college town of St. Cloud, MN.

Both routes are basically the same distance with similar drive times.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 127 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 2 hours, 15 minutes
  • Grand Casino Mill Lacs (1 hour 45 mins)
  • St. Cloud, MN (1 hour 15 mins)

For the most scenic short roadtrip, head down to Lake Pepin, just a little over 1 hour south of Minneapolis.

The road trip will take you down the Great River Road Scenic Drive , so you know it’s gotta be pretty!

The name comes from the road’s tendency to weave along the shore of the Mississippi River. Along the way, you’ll find cute small towns and plenty of gorgeous river bluff views.

This is also one of the best road trips in Minnesota to take in the fall, thanks to amazing fall colors along the river.

This route is a road trip classic, and the short version highlighted here is just the beginning. The truly dedicated could continue this trip all the way down to New Orleans! (Seriously! More on that later…)

In this shorter itinerary, you’ll start in the Twin Cities and head down the river road to Wabasha, MN. Cross the river to Nelson, WI, and then head back up the cities on the opposite side of the river. (There’s river roads on both sides of the Mississippi, and both are equally scenic, so make sure you check them both out!)

This route is packed full of interesting small towns, including:

  • Hastings, MN: A cute historic town that’s only 30 minutes south of St. Paul. You can relax along the river in Levee Park or wander the historic 2nd Street, which is filled with quaint antique shops and the always-popular Spiral Brewing.
  • Red Wing, MN: A small town filled with restored historic buildings. Home to the legendary Red Wing Shoes and Red Wing Pottery / Stoneware companies.
  • Frontenac, MN: Worthy of a stop for Frontenac State Park or Mount Frontenac Golf Course, both of which have fantastic views of the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin
  • Lake City, MN: A very small harbor town known for it’s sailboat-filled Marina.
  • Wabasha, MN: Another small town worthy of a stop. Wabasha is known for its beautiful riverfront walking trails as well as the National Eagle Center , where you can learn about the many Bald Eagles native to the area.

More details on the drive:

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 90 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 1 hour, 45 minutes
  • Hastings, MN (35 mins)
  • Red Wing, MN (1 hour, 10 mins)
  • Frontenac, MN (1 hour, 20 mins)
  • Lake City, MN (1 hour, 30 mins)
  • Wabasha, MN (1 hour, 45 mins)

Medium weekend road trips from Minneapolis (about 3 hours)

If you’re looking to get a little further from home or want a little more road time, the next few road trips will take you to fantastic destinations about 3 hours from the Twin Cities.

These trips are perfect for a long weekend, since each one is packed with tons of great things to see and do.

Wisconsin Dells is known as the water park capital of the world, so you can bet this is the perfect family destination for a family road trip.

This popular tourist town features tons of water park resorts, including the biggest in the world, no matter how you measure it. Seriously, looking for the largest outdoor water park in the world? The Dells has it. ( Noah’s Ark ) The largest indoor waterpark? Yep. ( Kalahari Resort ) How about the largest combined indoor/outdoor waterpark? Yes and yes. ( Wilderness Resort )

Of course, that’s just one part of The Dells story. There’s also theme parks, mini golf courses, real golf courses, spas, ziplines, live shows, boat tours, trolley tours, and don’t forget, the legendary “Duck Tours.”

Wisconsin Dells sits in southern Wisconsin, about 3.5 hours from the Twin Cities.

To get there, you’ll take I-94 East, which to be honest, isn’t exactly the most scenic or eventful road trip option from the cities.

Your obvious half-way point would be Eau Claire or Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, which for beer fans, may be worth a stop to visit or tour the Leinenkugel’s Brewery .

Another option would be to drive through La Crosse, WI. This would take you down the previously mentioned Scenic River Road and only add about an hour to your drive.

Otherwise, this is one road trip that you may want to tackle in one shot, assuming the little ones are up for it.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 216 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 3 hours, 20 mins
  • Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin (1 hour, 45 mins)

When most locals think about cute small towns in our state, Lanesboro is always one of the first to mind.

This picturesque small town just looks like the type of place to jump out of a Hallmark movie. It has a lively main street of historic brick buildings, all of which are surrounded by the area’s tall river bluffs, almost making this place the closest thing Minnesota has to a mountain town.

Add in plenty of fun activities, like the 60-mile Root River Bike Trails system or the state’s largest cave , and it’s obvious why Lanesboro is always one of the state’s most popular small-town getaways.

But there’s a second fantastic small town just across the border. Decorah , Iowa sits just 45 minutes away. There you’ll find an underrated collection of parks that celebrate the region’s endless hills, rivers, and limestone bluffs. Surprisingly, Decorah has also become one America’s brewery hot spots; it’s now home to two critic’s favorits – Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock breweries.

Lanesboro sits in southeast Minnesota, about 2 hours from the Twin Cities. To get there, you’ll take 52 South, cut directly through Rochester, MN, and then veer off towards the cute small town.

To get from Lanesboro to Decorah, you’ll head another 45 minutes south through peaceful Minnesota and Iowa farmland.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 157 miles (Minneapolis to Decorah, IA)
  • One-way driving time without stops: 2 hours, 50 mins (Minneapolis to Decorah, IA)
  • Lanesboro, MN (2 hours, 15 mins)

Look out, stereotypes about corn fields. Des Moines, Iowa is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States.

As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines has a surprisingly impressive city vibe that features lively arts, top notch food, plenty of shopping, trendy neigbhorhoods, and a rich history.

It’s a sneakily impressive city. We know plenty of Minnesotans, who after finishing cracking their inevitable jokes about Iowa, will secretly admit that Des Moines is one of the cooler cities they’ve ever visited.

Des Moines is 3.5 hours south of Minneapolis.

You’ll take 35E South, which isn’t the most exciting drive in the world. The best advice we can give you is that if you really need a stop, Owatonna, MN, located 1 hour south of Minneapolis, is a somewhat interesting small town with quite a bit of history. Otherwise, your best bet may be the SPAM Museum in Austin, MN.

Otherwise, just keep on trucking, and you’ll find yourself in one of America’s most underrated cities in no time.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 244 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 3 hours 30 mins
  • Owatonna, MN (1 hour)

Longer 5-7 Day Road Trips from Minneapolis (5+ hours)

Now we’re entering some real road trip territory!

These road trips will all take you to amazing destinations that are about 5 hours or longer from the Twin Cities.

For these destinations, you’ll definitely want to give yourself several days to take everything in. Most would be best with five to seven days of vacation, so if you’ve got a little more time on your hands, these are certainly some of the best drives inside (and out of!) the state!

Making the full drive through Minnesota’s stunning North Shore is something every Minnesotan should do at least once. Even most out of town visitors will be surprised that our humble Midwestern state has such amazing scenery!

This road trip will take you from Minneapolis, through the previously-highlighted town of Duluth, and all the way along the Lake Superior shoreline to the Canadian border!

The first two hours of this drive will take you to Duluth. From there, you head to the true “Minnesota North Woods” as you follow Minnesota’s Scenic Highway 61 through Two Harbors, past Lutsen, into Grand Marias, and eventually, right to the Canadian border.

There’s so many amazing stops along this route that we wrote an entire guide to our 19 favorite things to do on Minnesota’s North Shore .

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 299 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 4 hours, 55 mins
  • Recommended stops: We list all our favorite stops in our article about the best things to do on Minnesota’s North Shore .

MSP airport has tons of cheap, quick flights to The Windy City, so it’s easy to forget that you can almost drive there in the same amount of time!

Chicago is the third most populated city in the U.S. So if our own city’s collection of amenities isn’t doing it for ya, you can always hop in a car to experience deep dish pizza, world-class museums, iconic skyscrapers, and the great Lake Michigan all for yourself.

By car, Chicago is just over 6 hours of highway driving from Minneapolis.

At the four hour mark, you’ll enter Madison, Wisconsin, which is worth a stop. As the capital city of Wisconsin and home to the University of Wisconsin, Madison is a city with a unique character all its own. While there, you can grab a delicious meal or four, lounge at the Student Union’s beautiful lakefront terrace, and experience masterpiece architecture from the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright.

But to really ramp this road trip to the next level, consider this –  adding a stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin adds just 30 minutes of driving to the route.

For our money, Milwaukee is one of the most underrated cities in the country. It’s filled with more amazing breweries than we can count, carries a unique tradition of German food all-of-it’s own, sits in a beautiful lakefront location right on the water, and even has casinos within city limits!

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 408 miles to Chicago
  • One-way driving time without stops: 6 hours, 15 minutes
  • Madison, Wisconsin (4 hours, 15 mins)
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin (5 hours, 5 minutes)

If you’re looking for the ultimate in idyllic Midwest trips, Door County it is.

Does your idea of a good vacation include a landscape lined with blue lakewater, picturesque countryside, and endless wineries, lighthouses, and state parks? Then you might want to make the drive to this beautiful part of Northeastern Wiconsin.

Door county is almost exactly five hours east of Minneapolis. Along the way, you’ll drive through hours of north Wisconsin’s rural countryside, before eventually reaching Green Bay.

Depending on your football affiliations, entering Green Bay is either akin to going behind enemy lines or reaching The Promiseland. Either way, it’s a unique town with more than just football, and certainly worth a stop one hour before (or after) reaching the final Door County destination.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 321 miles to Door County
  • One-way driving time without stops: 4 hours, 50 minutes
  • Green Bay, Wisconsin (4 hours, 15 minutes)

It’s easy to overlook the Upper Peninsula, that odd part of Michigan that hooks over to the same land mass as Wisconsin but oddly, is still technically part of Michigan.

But anyone who’s ever made the drive to this difficult to reach part of the country knows that “The U.P.” is home to endless miles of beautiful Lake Superior coastline, acres upon acres of pristine wilderness, and all sorts of natural attractions. (The most popular being the photogenic and colorful cliffsides known as Pictured Rocks .)

Sure, it doesn’t get the press (or amenities) of more popular nature destinations, but Michigan’s Upper Peninsula absolutely carries a certain tranquility that’s hard to find these days.

Our recommended road trip from Minneapolis to the Upper Peninsula features the final desination of Munising, MI. Munising is a small town that marks the beginning of the popular Pictured Rocks, and a great spot to start your kayak tour of these beauties.

The most direct route to Munising clocks in at 6 hours and 55 minutes, but we actually recommend you take the more scenic route through Northern Wisconsin. This will allow you to break up your drive with stops in Hayward , Wisconsin (yet another one of our best vacation lakes from Minneapolis ) and Marquette , MI (the charming college town).

Note: This is the exact route we took when the pandemic halted our summer air-travel plans, and we had to adjust plans to somewhere drive-able and a little more remote. This section of Michigan did not disappoint!)

For those with extra time, this path also allows you to spend even more time exploring the region with a quick jaunt up to Copper Harbor , yet another interesting part of the U.P. which sits on a peninsula of its own.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 425 miles to Munising
  • One-way driving time without stops: 7 hours, 30 minutes
  • Hayward, Wisconsin (2 hours, 30 mins)
  • Marquette, Michigan (6 hours, 30 mins)

For the nearest national park outside of Minnesota, consider the lengthy drive to Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota.

Badlands is a park famous for its unique rock formations that are an odd mix between canyons and mountains. These strange rock features were created by years of erosion, exposing the dramatic, colorful, and frankly… bizarre landscape that’s unlike anywhere else in the country.

Badlands is 7 hours and 20 minutes west of Minneapolis on Interstate 90. Near the beginning of the drive, you’ll pass through Mankato, MN and Siox Falls, SD before spending hours driving through southern South Dakota prairie and grassland.

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 502 miles to Badlands National Park

Massively Huge Road Minnesota Road Trips

In case you have a couple weeks (or months!) to burn, check out this wild road trip!

I’d say only two types of people can pull off this monster road trip: those who just can’t get enough driving, and people who already are retired.

The Great River Road is considered by hardcore roadtrippers to be one of America’s most scenic drives. This massive road trip follows the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles, all the way from Red Wing Minnesota to, wait for it… New Orleans, Louisiana!

We talked about the first part of this drive when we outlined the trip from Minneapolis to Lake Pepin earlier in this article, but that’s only the beginning of the Great River Road.

Safe to say, there’s far more to cover on this road trip than we could ever fit on this page. And unfortunately, yours truly hasn’t been able to devote the vacation time needed for this monster road trip just yet.

But for those lucky enough to be planning this trip, we’d recommend checking out something like the Mississippi River Parkway Commission or Road Trip USA’s guide .

  • Distance from Minneapolis: 2,000 miles
  • One-way driving time without stops: 34 hours!!!
  • Red Wing, MN
  • La Crosse, WI
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Memphis, TN
  • New Orleans, LA

Minneapolis and St. Paul?

They’re the dynamic duo of culture, history, and art.

Time to buckle up and head for the Walker Sculpture Garden, before island hopping to Nicollet Island.

Don’t miss The Chain of Lakes—each one like a different cousin at your family reunion—and of course, the Capitol, standing proud like your favorite uncle.

2. Grand Rounds Scenic Byway

13 Minnesota Road Trips 3

As for the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway in Minneapolis, picture this: A road so picturesque, it could make a grown man weep with joy.

You’re driving, window down, as the breeze whispers sweet nothings to the trees.

3. St. Croix River

Veer northeast of Twin Cities, and the St. Croix River is there with open arms, ready to introduce you to charming towns like Stillwater and Taylors Falls.

It’s like a cozy blanket of Americana wrapped around you.

13 Minnesota Road Trips 4

Duluth—the city so stunning, you’ll entertain moving in on the spot.

The weave of roads, the crisp air—they beckon with the promise of the great outdoors and the the warmth of a local smile.

5. North Shore

Once you’ve had your Duluth dalliance, it’s time to press on up the North Shore.

Mother Nature outdid herself here; she’s showing off with Superior’s views and waterfalls.

Who needs a postcard when it’s your reality?

Follow the road all the way to Canada—waterfalls galore and a beach that’s the cherry on top.

6. Superior National Forest & Voyageurs National Park

You can tramp around on your own two legs, hug a tree (they won’t hug back, but don’t take it personally), or become best friends with a fish.

And the air! If they bottled that fresh, pine-scented air, I’d spritz myself with it every morning.

The BWCA is the family campout where Mother Nature spoils you silly and you don’t have to pretend to like sleeping on the ground.

8. Bemidji & Beyond

In Bemidji, we’re talkin’ primo lake vacations.

13 Minnesota Road Trips 9

Onward to Cannon Falls, picked up by the nurturing flow of the Cannon River.

This gem in Minnesota greets you with the sort of small-town charm that suggests the locals have never uttered the word “hustle.”

The Cannon River does the heavy lifting here, with its gentle currents offering a backdrop of lazy canoe trips and the promise of the world’s most leisurely fishing – it’s so laid-back, I wouldn’t be surprised if the fish jumped on the hook to save you the effort!

Family-friendly?

Even the ducks here seem to paddle by in a courteous file, like they’re leading the kids on a feathered field trip.

13. Mississippi Shoreline

13 Minnesota Road Trips 10

Drop south of the Twin Cities for a riverside romance with the charming towns of Red Wing and Hastings.

Their scenic routes, hugged by bluffs, will romance you with each curve and view.

Hastings is a uniquely fascinating and picturesque destination, the perfect encore to your road trip symphony.

There you have it, friends—13 road trips that will have you rediscovering the beauty of Minnesota in a way you never imagined.

With each journey, you renew your sense of wonder and your love for the places that are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from your doorstep.

best road trips minnesota

In the land of 10,000 lakes, it's no surprise that road trips almost always lead to water—the Root River, Lake Superior, the Mississippi River, or the many inland lakes spreading from the pine-tipped north to the prairies of the south. Enjoy the best Minnesota has to offer on these seven drives, among the state's 22 scenic byways traversing 3,000 miles of boreal forests, bluff beauty, picturesque small towns, and more.

Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway

This 54-mile route , named for a certain famous lumberjack, circles the Whitefish Chain of Lakes in north-central Minnesota. Storied resorts lie nearby, like Breezy Point (with its great golf course Deacon's Lodge); plenty of cabin rentals pepper the area, too, all making for the ideal lakeside getaway. Plus, there's a rich supper club history, so consider dining at Norway Ridge for a classic "up north" moment. Or opt for the new restaurant kid nearby with Justin Sunderland's Northern Soul Smokehouse , part of Grand View Lodge . To stretch your legs along the scenic lakes loop, stroll or cycle the paved Paul Bunyan State Trail , one of the country's longest rails-to-trails success stories. Climb the 100-foot-high historic fire lookout tower at Paul M. Thiede Fire Tower Park in Pequot Lakes for panoramic views.

Great River Road

It makes sense that the state where the Mississippi begins is also home to numerous segments of the Great River Road , an All-American Road and National Scenic Byway. One of the most impressive stretches is State Highway 61 as it hugs the bluffy shores of Lake Pepin, the widest natural part of the Mississippi, and moves south. The route from Red Wing to Wabasha, home of the National Eagle Center , and on to Winona makes for an ideal day trip from nearby Rochester or the Twin Cities. The Reads Landing overlook offers a lovely vantage point and, better still, a nearby riverfront brewery pours local sips. Hikers will enjoy both Frontenac State Park and Great Bluffs State Park along the Mississippi; at Great Bluffs, the easy 1.25-mile (one-way) Kings Bluff Trail leads to an exceptionally scenic overlook.

North Shore Scenic Drive

Perhaps the most celebrated of all scenic drives in Minnesota, the 154-mile-long North Shore route has earned All-American Road status. Stretching from Canal Park in Duluth to the international border in Grand Portage, this heavenly road trip on State-61 skirts Lake Superior and passes a whopping eight state parks on its way to Canada. Consider a stay at Lutsen Sea Villas for Superior views right on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail . And carve out some time to explore the small town of Grand Marais, home to the state's longest-operating arts colony as well as top-notch restaurants like Angry Trout Cafe and The Fisherman's Daughter .

Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway

Minnesota's southerly reaches contain some stunning scenery, too. See the bluffs of the Root River Valley from State Highway 16, which comprises the majority of the 88-mile Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway . The road stretches and winds from Dexter in the west all the way to the Mississippi River in the east near La Crescent. The highlight of this byway: Lanesboro , an artsy haven on the banks of the Root River and a good jumping-off point for a pedal on the Root River State Trail . At the Four Daughters Vineyard and Winery near Spring Valley, drop in on the weekend for a taste of Loon Juice cider and a fun brunch charcuterie board.

Lake Country Scenic Byway

Back in northern Minnesota, this lake-lined road snakes from Walker to Park Rapids, up to the headwaters of the Mississippi, then back down to Park Rapids, and ends at the western terminus of Detroit Lakes . Grab a slice of pizza at beloved regional chain Zorbaz and sample local beers at Portage Brewing Company to fuel up on the journey, which offers some of the state's most iconic vistas. Stop roughly halfway through the 88-mile byway at Itasca State Park , Minnesota's oldest, to see where the Mississippi River begins her long trip to the Gulf of Mexico. Birders can also enjoy part of the Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail , a 200-mile-long bird-watching odyssey.

Grand Rounds Scenic Byway

This scenic byway , the longest continuous public urban parkway in the country, loops about 50 miles around the heart of Minneapolis and connects some of its prettiest lakes (like Lake Harriet , with a bandshell, fishing pier and beach) and other attractions. Check out the wildflower garden at Theodore Wirth Park, the waterfall at Minnehaha Regional Park , or the sculpture garden at the Walker Arts Center. And if you'd prefer not to drive, explore some of the same territory on 100 miles of multi-use trails, half for walking and half for biking.

Highway 75 King of Trails Scenic Byway

This byway traces the western edge of Minnesota all the way from the Iowa/Minnesota border to the Canada/Minnesota border. It's part of Historic Highway 75, which runs from the Gulf of Mexico to Winnipeg. Along the 414 miles in Minnesota, you'll find great stops like Pipestone National Monument in the south (where tribes have traveled for centuries to quarry red pipestone for pipes and effigies) and, in the north, Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center , with its authentic Norwegian ship and Stave Church. While you're in Moorhead, toast your trip with an on-tap specialty at one of the state's best craft breweries, Junkyard Brewing Company .

A waterfall cascades down three levels of dark brown rock as seen through a forest of tall trees just starting to change colors in autumn. It's a foggy and misty day with a slight haze. Devil's Kettle Falls at Judge C.R. Magney State Park in Minnesota.

I fell in love with this adorable harbor town the moment I saw it. Nestled along Lake Superior and dotted with outstanding restaurants, Grand Marais is a true gem. Visitors can find easy access to the Gunflint Trail, the Boundary Waters, the Superior Hiking Trail , and practically endless trails to enjoy in all seasons.

Some of my favorite things to do in Grand Marais are walk out to Artists Point in the harbor, enjoy a sunset dinner at Angry Trout, and chase waterfalls at Judge C.R. Magney, Grand Portage and Cascade River State Parks.

One of the most underrated areas in the state in the Minnesota Iron Range. This area stretches from near Crosby in central northern Minnesota up past Ely near the Canadian border. What once was a shallow sea has now become the perfect depiction of a true Minnesota Northwoods experience.

The Minnesota Iron Range is actually made up of three different ranges: Cuyuna, Vermillion and Mesabi. Cuyuna has become a haven for mountain biking and fat tire biking all year round. For a paved biking path, check out the Mesabi Trail which stretches from Ely to Grand Rapids. Ely is another gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoes Area, with loads of outfitters available in town.

Pro Tip: This is a great area to explore by campervan! Read my beginner’s guide to renting a campervan to plan your adventure.

I fell in love with Scenic and Bear Head Lake State Parks , both designed to be explored on land or by water. It’s easily one of my favorite weekend road trips from Minneapolis.

Plan your Minnesota Iron Range road trip now!

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for an awesome off-grid place to stay, check out Ely Log Cabin. Here’s my detailed review , including a discount code!

Great for: Hiking, camping, canoeing, biking, fishing, native Ojibwe culture, mining history and more.

Bright autumn colors along a mountain biking trail in Duluth Minnesota.

Visiting Duluth is a rite of passage for Minnesotans. As you drive into Duluth from the south, you get a first glimpse at Lake Superior as you descend down into the harbor town. It’s the perfect weekend getaway in Minnesota for outdoor lovers who prefer nice restaurants and hotels with views of Lake Superior after a long day of exploring.

One of my favorite spots in Duluth is Park Point Beach. To get there, drive across the lift bridge until where the road ends at the small seaplane hangar. Bring a picnic or just wander along the shore for great views of the city and harbor.

Looking for hiking trails in Duluth? Try these day hiking these sections of the Superior Hiking Trail: Brewer Park Loop , Spirit Mountain , and Ely’s Peak .

Plan a daytrip to Duluth and Minnesota’s north shore of Lake Superior now!

Great for: Hiking, views of Lake Superior, relaxing on a beach, mountain biking, and a small city vibe.

Aside from being another adorable town, Crosby and the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area are home to 25 miles of world class mountain biking trails and crystal clear lakes. Rent a paddle board or kayak to explore by water or, if you can believe it, go scuba diving!

If you prefer adventures on foot hike to Miner’s Mountain Overlook, the tallest point in the area, for spectacular views anytime of day but especially at sunrise and sunset.

Plan a winter weekend getaway in Cuyuna country!

Great for: Mountain biking, fat tire biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, mining history, fishing and even scuba diving!

Bright red rocks of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Bayfield Wisconsin as seen from inside of a kayak on Lake Superior.

For a completely different view of Lake Superior, explore the southern shore from the adorable town of Bayfield, Wisconsin. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (part of the US National Parks system) and take a ferry ride out to Madeline Island. The town of Bayfield has small town vibe with tons of cute restaurants and shops!

My favorite thing to do near Bayfield Wisconsin is to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves. It’s a truly incredible experience!

There’s no doubt that this is one of the best road trips from Minnesota.

Great for: Hiking, camping, kayaking, relaxing on the beach, boating, sailing.

View of Minnesota's rocky north shore covered in ice and snow as viewed from Tettegouche State Park near Two Harbors MN.

Just past Duluth, on the western end of Minnesota’s north shore is the quaint town of Two Harbors. Nearby you can find, arguably, some of Minnesota’s best state parks, hiking trails, and viewpoints at Tettegouche State Park, Palisade Head and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.

Two Harbors makes a great weekend getaway destination in all four seasons! Be sure to enjoy the sunset at the Two Harbors lighthouse on Agate Bay Beach and sunrise at Burlington Bay Beach. You won’t be disappointed!

Plan your winter weekend getaway to Two Harbors with this guide!

Great for: Hiking, camping, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, photography, and chasing waterfalls.

Nestled on the St Croix River, just down the road from the Twin Cities, Stillwater is one of the best getaways in Minnesota. Wander along Main Street for an afternoon of shopping. I especially like the antique and old timey candy shops! If you want a more active way to spend your day, rent a bike from Chilkoot Cyclery and ride the 5 mile loop trail to Wisconsin and back.

In the winter months, Stillwater is known for hosting a number of winter events which includes an ice sculpting competition and ice skating among other things!

In any season, the hike to the Boomsite waterfall is an adventure. It’s one of many frozen waterfalls near the Twin Cities in winter!

Great for: Hiking, boating, biking , shopping and chasing waterfalls.

View of Lake Pepin from Frontenac State Park in Minnesota.

Lake Pepin sits between the Minnesota and Wisconsin border about one hour southeast of the Twin Cities. Enjoy views of Lake Pepin from its western shore in Minnesota at Frontenac State Park. Birdwatchers love the Sand Point Trail which offers great views of some of the nearly 300 bird types found in the park! If you love being on the water, Lake Pepin is known for boating, fishing and sailing too.

After the end of a day of exploring, visit one of the many wineries in the area. For a feel of Italy, visit Villa Bellezza ’s stunning wine tasting room and onsite restaurant. Also nearby in Nelson is the Stone Barn pizza farm and Nelson Creamery with locally made ice cream.

Great for: Hiking, fishing, birding, boating, sailing, apple picking, art studios, and wine tasting.

Renting a houseboat in Voyageurs National Park is a unique adventure in northern Minnesota.

With over one third of the park only accessible by water, Voyageurs National Park is a truly unique experience. The most popular way to explore the park is by boat or canoe. But, if that’s not for you, try renting a houseboat instead! Be sure to book your campsite and houseboat rental well in advance though.

Pro Tip: Considering a houseboat rental? Here’s my review of Voyagaire Houseboats on Crane Lake.

Voyageurs National Park is an essential weekend road trip from Minnesota, but you might be tempted to stay much longer! The solitude and beauty of this area is incredible.

Great for: Canoeing, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, and camping.

Located in southeast Minnesota’s bluff country, Lanesboro is an adorable small town with tons to do! While there, be sure to stay at one of the many bed & breakfasts. Obviously, this list of the best Minnesota road trips couldn’t be complete without mentioning Minneapolis! If you are based in Minneapolis, why not make your weekend getaway in MN a staycation?

Minneapolis has a thriving music scene with venues such as 1st Avenue and Paisley Park. There’s also a vibrant and diverse food scene no matter your budget ! Grab a Vietnamese pastry for breakfast, Somali sambusas for lunch and Ecuadorian food for dinner. The options are endless.

Outdoor lovers can take to the water by renting a paddleboard or kayak, walk around the lakes or hit the trails all right in the heart of the city. In winter, Minneapolis is a great destination for cross country skiing and even ice climbing!

32 Best Minnesota Road Trips from Minneapolis this Summer 2024

Memorial Day marks the official start of summer for most Minnesotans. This is when school lets out, road construction comes out in force, and for me, it’s the start of the Minnesota Road Trip Season.

Ok, I take trips in the Spring , Fall , and Winter too. But Summer Road Trips in Minnesota is where it all started.

I’ve put together a list of 32 different ways to get the most out of your summer vacation. If you are looking for a Day Trip to take, or a full-fledged weekend road trips from Minneapolis, here are some ideas to start off your adventure. These are the things that you can only do during Summer.

Why is Summer the best time for road trips in Minnesota?

The best time to go on a weekend road trip is in summer. That because more things are open. With leaner staffs, that is more important than ever as even small towns will shut down stores during the week. So plan accordingly.

32 Minnesota Road Trip Ideas

Get wild at a mn zoo.

Zoos are always a great way to enjoy summer and a favorite destination of mine. But this time, skip the big cities’ zoos and take a day trip to the Pine Grove Zoo in Little Falls or Hemker Park Zoo in Freeport.

Both are smaller, family-owned operations that depend on your support. They offer opportunities to meet the animal with special encounters.

Of course, there is always the Minnesota Zoo , open year-round.

For a list of all Zoos in Minnesota, check out: The Best Zoo’s in Minnesota | From Aquariums to Animal Encounters

Amusement Parks

Amusement parks are a simple decision. The bigger parks like Valleyfair have extended the season past the Memorial Day to Labor Day norm, but the rest is just open for this limited-time season.

Go to Big Kahuna Fun Park in Spicer, Casey’s Amusement Park in Alexandria , Paul Bunyan Land and Pirates Cove both in Brainerd , or Wild Mountain Waterpark in Taylors Falls .

Watch Some Fast Cars at the Raceway

Have a need for speed? Take a road trip to northern Minnesota in Brainerd, to get your fill at Brainerd International Raceway . The raceway features top thrill drag races and all kinds of other events throughout the summer.

I took a trip up here before, and it’s a whole different world. Don’t forget to check out the pits!

The Jeffers Petroglyphs & Pipestone

Hit the road and find some Petroglyphs. See some original art at the Jeffers Petroglyphs in southwestern Minnesota. It’s estimated that these glyphs are 5,000 years old American Indian Rock Carvings. These glyphs are only viewable during the summer months.

The Minnesota Historical Society operates the site and makes a perfect stop on your way to the Pipestone National Monument . These roadside stops are what MN road trips are all about.

Pipestone National Monument is a favorite of mine. They are open year-round and free to enter. Click here to find out more!

Go Inside a Lighthouse at Split Rock Lighthouse

While you can see Split Rock Lighthouse any time during the year, to look inside, it has to be summer. Once past the visitors’ center, and tour the inside of the lighthouse and supplementary buildings, go down the steps to the shoreline of Lake Superior to get your ionic MN North Shore picture.

Every Minnesotan should do a road trip here once in their life. If you are short on cash and don’t want to go inside the lighthouse, here are some tips to save some cash: How to See Split Rock Lighthouse MN Without Breaking the Bank .

Sunflower Fields in MN

Minnesota fields pop each summer with spectacular sunflowers . We didn’t realize they were blooming so early until we took a trip to some Minnesota State Parks in northern Minnesota.

Between July to August, there are plenty of opportunities to check out these amazing sunflower fields.

See a Horse Race

Check out Canterbury Park and bet on a winner. This is a quick road trip from Minneapolis. You don’t have to put any money down to enjoy the fun. Sit in the stands with a big fancy hat. Go down the racetrack level.

Meet the horses and see the winners. Come out on some of the themed weekends. You’ll get to see exotic animals racing, and even dogs and other fun things. Check their calendar for the details.

Find a Vineyard

Pick up a MN Wine Passport and visit some wineries. Get some friends together and go on one of the Minnesota Wine Trails.

If wine isn’t up your alley try a brew at the Shells Brewing Company . Or do a Girls Weekend and see them all at the Clink Wine Fest! Sampling The Best Minnesota Wines at Clink Sip + Savor Wine Market .

Go to a Train Station

When you are out looking at Minnehaha Falls , stop at the first train station on the west side of the Mississippi . On Sunday afternoons, visitors can enter the museum and learn about the railroad’s history.

All the volunteers come from the Minnesota Transportation Museum. Which is also another great place to see more railroad history. You can also take a trip along the shores of Lake Superior or the St Croix on a Scenic Train Ride. The Best Scenic Train Rides in Minnesota.

The Snake River Fur Post

The Fur trade is one of the earliest businesses drawing in settlers to the area. The Snake River Fur Post tells its story.

You can see where the fur traders met with the Ojibwa, where they made their homes, and explore some trails in the area as you walk through history’s footsteps.

Explore a Sculpture Garden

Minnesota is so unique with the variety of different art we have. My favorite has always been the sculpture gardens.

Some of my favorites are the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden , the Franconia Sculpture Garden in Minneapolis, and the Harrison Sculpture Garden in the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen .

Short on cash? Check out: Over 28 Free Museums in the Twin Cities in 2023

Croft Mine Historical Park

Take an elevator ride into a simulated underground iron ore mine at Croft Mine Historical Park. The historic site of the 1924 collapse of the lake nearby killed 41 men and is one of the deadliest accidents in the country.

You can hear the chilling tale of what these people went through at: Truly Haunted Places in MN . To avoid the scare factor, see it during summer.

Hinckley Fire Museum

If you’ve ever been to Duluth, you’ve seen the signs for the Hinckley Fire Museum. It’s a roadside sign you need to follow.

This museum shows how just a small sparkled to one of the biggest natural disasters in history.

Minnesota Lock and Dams

Visit one of seven locks and dams along the Mississippi River. These serve as the stairway steps on the river. Run by the US Amy Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service .

Tours of most of the Dams are free and open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. When guided tours are not in session, you can see them from the viewing platforms.

Wonder what it’s like to visit? Check out Minnesota Lock and Dam #2

Minnesota Military Museum

Similar to the Hinckley Fire Museum, the Minnesota Military Museum sign had been tempting me to follow it too. This time, it was on the way back from Brainerd.

It turned out to be a fantastic adventure filled with tanks, trucks, aircraft, military barracks and so much more. Well worth a short detour, plus you get to go on a military base.

The Big Boot

Red Wing put itself on the amp from their incredible boot designs. To celebrate the company’s success, in 2005 they created a size 638 ½ boot of their iconic shoe.

They used the same materials and design to construct it. Take a trip down the Great River Road and to Red Wing in southeastern Minnesota and see just how big a size 638 ½ shoe is.

Stick around Red Wing for more fun things to do .

Visit a Historical Home

Check out one of the many historic houses that open up on Memorial Day. Charles A Lindbergh Historic Site , Folsom House, Glensheen Mansion , Comstock House, and the W.W. Mayo House.

Visit the author and illustrator’s home who made ‘Millions of Cats’ and other works in New Ulm, the Wanda Gag House.

Take a peek inside the Glensheen Mansion: Glensheen Mansion Tour | Duluth’s Downton Abbey

Visit a Historical Town

Visit one of the historic towns in Minnesota. Houses are one thing, but historical towns are on a whole other level! We have so many ones that include buildings and storefronts.

There is the Harkin Store in New Ulm, Fort Ridgely in Fairfax, Fort Snelling in St Paul, The Landing and Historic Forestville in Preston MN .

The Landing in Shakopee is a great stop, plus it offers free admission. Check out all the details by clicking here .

Take a Scenic Drive along the St. Croix

The best Minnesota road trips include a great view. The Saint Croix River has all kinds of fun things to do, and because of how close it is to Minneapolis, it’s a perfect Day Trip.

Starting in Taylors Falls , enjoy Interstate State Park on both sides of the river. Stop in for a glass of wine at the Chateau Saint Croix .

Take a train ride on the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway . Keep driving south to William O’Brien State Park .

Stop at the Marine on St Croix , the first Saw Mill in North America. And wind your way down to Stillwater for some antiquing and lunch on the river.

This stretch of road is one of the best road trips in Minnesota.

Taylors Falls has lots of seasonal attractions, but summer is where it shines. 16 Things To Do In Taylors Falls Minnesota | The Ultimate Guide

Hunt for Agates

Having a great lake means you can find some great agates. First, stop at the Moose Lake State Park Agate and Geological Center to find out how to hunt for gems along Minnesota’s North Shore .

Then walk along some of the north shorelines and see how many agates you can find along the shoreline.

Some of the best places to find stuff are Five Mile Rock Beach, Paradise Beach, and Beaver River Bay. Superior Trails has some useful tips on finding them.

Gordy’s Hi-Hat

Heading North? Gordy’s Hi-Ha t is the place to stop for some good old fashion greasy food. They were featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives.

Trust me; it’s worth waiting in line to get a basket of their onion rings and a milkshake! They also added wild rice veggie burgers to the menu.

Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store

Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store is amazing. Every year it’s like walking into something different. They transformed the candy-buying experience into a traditional event in our family. Bring a camera and lots of cash, because they don’t take credit cards.

They stock old fashion candies, rare hard-to-find candies, imported Anime candies, licorice, flavored sodas, and a complete line of bacon-flavored everything.

Opening in May every year, and closing just before Thanksgiving.

Shopping along the North Shore

Next time you drive to Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive along Highway 61, with over 28 Different Stops , along the scenic byway for a great road trip.

It adds a little to the commute, but it’s worth it for the views and the amazing shops along the way.

From Smoked Fish to Candy and Ice-cream to fantastic apple pie. Get some of the world’s best donuts in Grand Marais. Bring a camera and take things slow, because this is a great MN Road Trip.

Tip: Make sure you take the scenic route on the North Shore. There are so many hidden locations. Find them all by clicking here .

Bike the Root River Trail

The Root River Trail is one of the best bike rides you can take. Thousands of people travel the trail each year because of its flat paths and scenic rides.

The trail goes through small towns like Lanesborough and Whalen, home of the Stand Still Parade .

The cities along the trail have so much charm and great stores that you won’t want to leave. It’s the perfect way to spend summer in Southern Minnesota.

Solve the mystery of Devils Kettle

Devil’s Kettle has been stumping scientists for years. This north shore waterfall splits off into a strange hole in the grounds.

It wasn’t until a few years ago they determined that it was part of a bigger underground waterway.

This Minnesota Road Trip-worthy adventure is a one-mile hike through the best parts of the north shore, ending in the spectacular waterfall with it’s natural beauty.

MN’s North Shore is stunning and this hike can be a bit of a challenge. Make sure you are prepared: The Lie of Devils Kettle at Judge Magney State Park

Learn to Sail on Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun)

Take a sailing class with the Minneapolis Sailing Center . They are one of the largest sailing schools in the Midwest and offer classes for all ages and levels.

Sailing is a great way to spend some time on the water. The lake has some amazing views of the skyline and is the perfect size lake for a beginner to start. So hoist those sails!

Go to an outdoor concert

Many outdoor concerts and festivals take place throughout Minnesota during the summer months. From music festivals to food festivals, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The summer months are the perfect time to explore Minnesota’s many biking and hiking trails . From the Cannon Valley Trail to the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, there are plenty of options for outdoor enthusiasts.

Do some Cave Exploring

Minnesota is home to several unique cave systems that offer visitors an opportunity to explore the natural wonders hidden beneath the surface of the earth.

Three popular cave destinations in Minnesota include Niagara Cave , Mystery Cave , and the Soudan Underground Mine State Park . These caves are only open during the warmer summer months.

Niagara Cave and Myster Cave can both be done in one day making it sone of the best road trips from Minneapolis to take.

Canoe the BWCA

You could spend weeks or even months up there if you needed. But one thing is for sure; every Minnesota should visit at least once in their life.

Tips for an Epic trip in the BWCA with Kids

Hike the Superior Hiking Trail

The Superior Hiking Trail is the first section of a much larger hiking trail, the North Country National Scenic Trail .

The trail crosses seven states. I recommend starting with the Superior Hiking Trail. The trail has great scenic views including, cliffs, waterfalls, and Superior Lake views.

If you aren’t sure if you want to throw on a backpack yet, for a day hike. Pack a lunch and water and enjoy some of these well-maintained trails.

For a look at what the adventure is like, check out a first-timers experience on the Superior Hiking Trail.

Eat your way through the MN State Fair

Minneapolis was even named among the most bike-friendly cities in the world, meaning you could spend your entire time there outdoors, exploring the sights via beautiful “bikeways.” Beyond the cities, the expansive region of Northeast Minnesota offers small towns and art colonies alongside the pristine nature of the Boundary Waters. And though Northwest Minnesota is often considered the path less traveled, it has a lot to give in the way of nature and culture, including lakes, rivers, and a popular arts center.

To help you plan the perfect trip to the North Star State, we’ve rounded up the best things to do across Minnesota, from museum-hopping and beer tasting to canoeing, hiking, camping, and more. Keep reading, then get busy planning your Midwest adventure.

Bde Maka Ska

A trip to the Land of 10,000 Lakes wouldn’t be complete without spending some time on, well, a lake—even if you’re only visiting the cities. In Minneapolis, everyone heads to Bde Maka Ska , the largest of five in the city’s Chain of Lakes. Located in the Uptown neighborhood, the 401-acre lake is surrounded by parkland and trails, making it a favorite of locals for ice fishing in the winter and swimming, biking, and volleyball games in the summer. Along the shore are rental options for nearly every water sport, including sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, plus lockers for stashing your stuff when you’re out on the water. After a fire destroyed the lakeside pavilion in 2019, a $6.5 million replacement opened in October 2023, complete with a new Jamaican restaurant and plenty of Indigenous art.

Surly Brewing Co.

One of the first breweries in Minneapolis, Surly set the stage for all the places that opened in its wake by helping to pass legislation in 2011 allowing breweries and distilleries to serve alcohol on-site. It’s still going strong today and offers some of the most beloved brews in the region, like the Furious IPA and the Hell lager. Surly operates out of a sprawling space near the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus; guests can sample a rotating tap list in the beer hall or order New Haven–style apizzas upstairs.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Located next door to the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden features more than 60 works by big names like Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Calder, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Indiana. At its center stands Claes Oldenburg’s iconic Spoonbridge and Cherr y, which locals regard as an unofficial symbol of the city. Also worth checking out is a newer work, Okciyapi , by Twin Cities–based artist Angela Two Stars, which is dedicated to the concept of Indigenous language revitalization. The city’s art scene is exceptional, and you can pair a visit to the sculpture garden with stops at the Minneapolis Institute of Art , the Frank Gehry–designed Weisman Art Museum , or the Walker Art Center , which offers screenings, live performances, DJ-led parties, and a seasonal rooftop mini golf course.

Paisley Park

In 1987, Prince built this 65,000-square-foot dream estate and music studio, about 20 minutes southwest of downtown Minneapolis on what used to be a cornfield. Over the years, he welcomed fellow artists, like Madonna and Lizzo, to record albums in the space, and after his death, Paisley Park was officially opened to the public as a museum, with tours that take fans into his studios, soundstages, and archives. If you visit the area in spring 2025, you can catch the stage adaptation of Prince’s film and album Purple Rain , which will debut at the 1921 State Theatre before making a planned move to Broadway.

Minnehaha Regional Park

One of the unique things about the Twin Cities is just how much nature is part of the urban landscape. Few places exemplify this better than Minnehaha , one of Minneapolis’s oldest and most popular parks. Here, visitors will find limestone bluffs, river overlooks, and a majestic 53-foot waterfall that freezes in winter. Explore the area via various walking and biking paths, or bring your furry friend to the epic dog park. There’s also a disc golf course, picnic area, playground, volleyball court, and wading pool, making the park perfect for family outings.

Guthrie Theater

One of America’s greatest regional theaters, the Guthrie occupies an architectural marvel by Jean Nouvel that sits among the historic mills on the banks of the Mississippi River. The building itself is as dramatic as the plays inside, with such features as an amber glass box that juts out of the building and offers views of the riverfront, and a 178-foot-long cantilevered Endless Bridge that hangs over the highway below. Over the years, the Tony-winning theater has staged performances by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Morgan Freeman, Kristin Chenoweth, James Earl Jones, and Angela Bassett.

Bell Museum

Minnesota’s official natural history museum, the Bell in St. Paul features a digital planetarium, wildlife dioramas, outdoor learning experiences, and more. Visit the state-of-the-art planetarium to explore the far reaches of the cosmos, then head to the permanent galleries to learn about the origins of the universe, the diversification of life on earth, and how University of Minnesota researchers are working to create a better future for our evolving world. Children love the Touch & See Lab, a first-of-its-kind experience when it debuted more than 50 years ago; now, visitors get hands-on access to items like fossils, honeybee hives, and plants. Nature lovers will want to head to the green roof and observatory deck, home to native plants, a geology exploration area, and a solar station.

American Swedish Institute

Set within in a 1908 châteauesque mansion (aka “the Castle”) once owned by Swedish immigrants, and an adjacent modern building, the cultural center houses rotating exhibits dedicated to historic painters, Nordic fashion, and more. The American Swedish Institute hosts cooking classes, language lessons (Swedish and Finnish), artists’ talks, parties (like summer crayfish feasts), and handicraft workshops, where you can learn how to embroider, weave, carve wood, needle-felt, or even make Sámi herbal remedies. During your visit, stop into Fika café for Swedish meatballs, smörgåsar (open-faced sandwiches), cardamom bread pudding, and Nordic-inspired cocktails, like the lingonberry-tinged Cosmic Skåling or the Bloody Swede, made with aquavit and beet brine.

Voyageurs National Park

One of the least visited national parks in the United States, Voyageurs takes its name from the French-Canadian fur traders who plied these waters by canoe in the 18th and 19th centuries. The park, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, sprawls across 340 square miles of lakes, forests, and streams and is best explored by boat. From the water, you’ll often see moose and beaver, and you may even catch the sound of a gray wolf howl on the wind. Since 2020, Voyageurs has also been an International Dark Sky Place, and it’s one of the best places in the Lower 48 to see the aurora borealis, plus other nighttime specials like the Milky Way, satellites, and shooting stars.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness , referred to as the BWCA or simply “the Boundary Waters,” draws canoeists from around the world—and for good reason. Located on the Minnesota–Canada border, the area encompasses more than 1 million acres in the northern section of the Superior National Forest and features over 1,100 lakes, 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails, and thousands of campsites. The nature here is pristine yet rugged, with lakes cut from granite and surrounded by old pine growth. Since planes flying below 4,000 feet are prohibited in the BWCA, the area is also blissfully silent, offering a kind of solitude rarely found in the U.S.

Franconia Sculpture Park

Located on 50 acres of prairie in the idyllic St. Croix River Valley, Franconia Sculpture Park is a popular day trip from the Twin Cities. Open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. 365 days a year, it’s completely free to explore—which may be why it sees nearly 200,000 visitors a year. Unlike at most art museums, guests here are encouraged to touch and climb the sculptures, making it a fun, interactive way to spend the day with family. If it’s too cold to play outdoors, consider dropping by for community arts programming like kids’ sculpture classes, live music, and artists’ talks. The park also runs an active artist residency, which helps to continually supply the grounds with new, large-scale sculptures.

Grand Marais Art Colony

Artists from all over the country come to learn from the renowned teachers at the Grand Marais Art Colony . Nestled between Lake Superior and the Superior National Forest, the center offers studio instruction in painting, printmaking, clay, and glassworks, as well as tiered classes for students of all levels. While some classes run for several days, many are just a few hours long and make for a perfect afternoon activity. Practice your color theory and drum leaf binding, or sign the kids up for youth lessons in clay sculpture, screen printing, and origami. The center also holds regular open studios, when you can drop in to see work by various artists-in-residence.

Glensheen Mansion

The most popular historic home in Minnesota, Duluth’s 27,000-square-foot Glensheen Mansion features 39 rooms, beautiful 20th-century craftsmanship, and 12 acres of gardens—but that’s not why people visit. Lovers of the macabre stop by to see where Elisabeth Congdon, the heiress to her family’s large mining fortune, was murdered along with her nurse in 1977. After being donated to the University of Minnesota, Glensheen opened as a historic house museum in 1979, with details like Chester Congdon’s top hat in a closet, his wife Clara’s letters in a desk drawer, and bedsheets organized in a linen closet by the Congdons’ second-floor maid nearly 100 years ago. Tours, which cover everything from the attic and third floor to the servants’ wing, respectfully leave out the murder scene, but guides are willing to share details afterward.

Superior Hiking Trail

The SHT , as it’s known to locals, is perhaps the most famous hiking trail in Minnesota—not to mention one of the most well-known in the United States. The footpath stretches for more than 310 miles from the Minnesota–Wisconsin border to just short of the Canadian border, offering incredible scenery and glimpses of moose and other rare wildlife. The southernmost segments offer easy day hikes, backpacking, and trail running out of Duluth. Farther north, the trail extends along the North Shore of Lake Superior, passing through charming towns like Grand Marais and Lutsen.

Northwest Minnesota

Zippel Bay State Park

Lake of the Woods is a must-visit county for any traveler to Northwest Minnesota, especially for Zippel Bay State Park . With about 3,000 acres of nature to explore, Zippel Bay has pet-friendly campsites and a sandy beach as well as excellent fishing, hiking, and bird-watching. The park is also popular in the colder months, when it transforms into a winter wonderland with ice fishing, snowmobiling, and 12 miles of groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. If you’re visiting in the summer and planning on doing some fishing, know that there’s a convenient fish-cleaning station where you can easily transform your day’s catch into your evening’s dinner.

Far North Spirits

Just 25 miles from the Canadian border in the tiny town of Hallock, Far North Spirits is the northernmost distillery in the contiguous United States. While you might think the distillery’s remote location holds it back, it’s actually what inspires owners Michael Swanson and Cheri Reese, who rely on Northern Minnesota’s agricultural abundance to craft their premium, heritage spirits. In fact, the husband-and-wife team are among only a handful of estate distillers nationwide who also grow their own grains. Using sustainable methods, they produce a handful of beautifully bottled gins, rums, vodkas, and whiskeys, all of which possess a uniquely Minnesota character. Try them at Far North’s stylish Cocktail Room, where you can order the spirits neat or mixed into well-crafted drinks.

Itasca State Park

Named for its lake—which serves as the starting point for the Mississippi River— Itasca is the oldest state park in Minnesota and the second oldest in the U.S., behind Niagara Falls. During the summer, locals flock here for hiking, camping, fishing, and exploring old-growth pine forests. History buffs can visit the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center, which features interactive, outdoor displays about the river, while those eager for a good meal can grab a table at the Douglas Lodge, which opened in 1905. In the winter, it’s worth planning a visit around the park’s candlelight event, when you can snowshoe on trails illuminated by candles and warm up around a bonfire with marshmallows and hot drinks.

Colorful museum exhibits dedicated to Spam

The Spam Museum is dedicated to the canned meat and has a can’t-miss gift shop filled with excellent branded merch.

Spam Museum

Lovers of quirky museums can’t do much better than this ode to canned ham in the town of Austin, home to the headquarters of parent company Hormel Foods. The museum walks through the history of the company (including early-1900s ham delivery wagons) with exhibits on international varieties and recipes and kids’ play areas. Best of all, perhaps, is the gift shop, where you can pick up Spam-branded jerseys, hoodies, trucker caps, piggy banks, and more, with a special collection of Hawaiian-themed items featuring a cartoony musubi print.

National Eagle Center

The town of Wabasha, on the banks of the Mississippi River, calls itself “the Eagle Capital of America,” with hundreds of bald eagles wintering here. Because of the unique geography of the river in these parts, it doesn’t see as much ice as other areas, so eagles can continue to fish, and it sits along a popular flyway for migratory birds. Since 1999, the town has been home to the National Eagle Center , which moved into a shiny new space in 2007. Once here, you can meet rescued raptors, stroll through exhibits, or head out into the field on a coach bus or tour boat to see bald and golden eagles, tundra swans, and other migrating waterfowl.

Spend Three Days In Three State Parks On This Weekend Road Trip In Minnesota

A three-day road trip in southern Minnesota covers three state parks, offering scenic beauty and outdoor activities.

Minnesota is full of adventure! In every region of the state, you can find awesome things to do. When it comes to state parks, the North Shore gets most of the attention. And it makes sense: these parks are filled with stunning waterfalls, high cliffs, churning rivers, and more. But there are other regions that offer just as much beauty. Today, we want to suggest a three-day road trip across another part of the state. Head south of the Twin Cities to spend three days in three state parks on this fun, nature-filled 3-day road trip in Minnesota . Check it out:

This road trip starts in Mankato and ends in Frontenac along Minnesota's eastern border. It spans about 110 miles and includes around 2 hours of driving time, making it an easy trip that doesn't include too much time in the car. Read on for the full route, including driving directions!

alt

1. Minneopa State Park

alt

The first stop on this weekend adventure is Minneopa State Park. This state park covers more than 4,000 acres near Mankato, Minnesota. With several miles of hiking trails, it's a popular place to while away a day and a great way to start your 3-day road trip in Minnesota.

alt

The park's most famous - and most popular -attraction is Minneopa Falls. This gorgeous waterfall comes in two parts. Visitors can easily walk up to see the Upper Falls, which tumble 10 feet over a small wall of rock. It’s a perfect addition to one of the best road trips in Minnesota.

alt

The water then flows into the Lower Falls, which falls 39 feet into a deep gorge below. A picturesque bridge offers amazing views - and is a lovely view itself. There's also a wide viewing platform as well as a more rugged path down to the base of the waterfall. Simply put, the view is stunning!

alt

Beyond the waterfalls, Minneopa State Park has another interesting attraction: its bison herd. There's a drive-thru bison area where visitors can see the herd up close! When you're done for the day, try camping in one of the park's many camping areas or lodging in one of Mankato's many places to stay.

2. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park

alt

On the second day of this weekend excursion, head to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, about 62 miles northeast of Minneopa. The perfect second stop on this weekend road trip in Minnesota.

alt

Covering around 2,800 acres, this state park has plenty to explore. With trails leading through the thick, lush forest, any hike you take here will be beautiful. The tree canopy offers plenty of shade, and the ground is full of interesting foliage.

alt

Look closely, and you'll see some of the wide range of organisms that grow in the woods. You may spot beautiful wildflowers, including the endangered dwarf trout lily. Many other wildflowers, interesting mushrooms, lovely songbirds, and more can be spotted here!

alt

After enjoying the scenery along the Hidden Falls Trail, an unexpected sight comes into view. The beautiful Hidden Falls is tucked away in the woods. This 20-foot waterfall is not the state's tallest or largest, but its location surrounded by a thick forest makes it one of the most beautiful! After this hike, guests can enjoy many others that lead to bridges, creeks, open floodplains, and more. When you've had your fill, set up in one of the park's many campsites. It’s one of the many reasons why this is one of the best road trips in Minnesota.

3. Frontenac State Park

alt

The final leg of the road trip ends at Frontenac State Park, about 45 miles east of Nerstrand Big Woods. It’s the third stop on one of our favorite road trips in Minnesota.

alt

Frontenac is a lesser-known state park along Minnesota's eastern border. It covers more than 2,000 acres next to the Mississippi River! Many visit this park for bird-watching. More than 260 species of birds have been spotted there!

alt

Aside from bird-watching, this is also a great park for hiking. A bluff in the park rises 430 feet over the river, offering spectacular views. There are many places to enjoy the scenery as you hike along the wooded, bird-filled trails.

alt

At the top, the incredible view of the Mississippi River is laid out for visitors to take in. There are amazing places to picnic or simply sit and enjoy the view. You can even camp on top of the bluff. This hike is an awesome way to cap off your weekend of adventure!

Hastings

1. Hastings, Minnesota

Hastings is a great town located just 25 minutes south of St. Paul. As you enter Hastings from the north side, you’ll drive across what was once a one-of-a-kind spiral design bridge intended for wagons. It has since been rebuilt to support modern-day cars and trucks. This town has so much history, a large riverfront park, a waterfall, and a bustling downtown with a brewery, coffee shops, and great restaurants. Road Trip Ideas From Minneapolis-St. Paul

Whether you're a Twin Cities local or you're just passing through, you can reach several stunning locations by car from Minneapolis–St. Paul. Because of the area's natural beauty and remoteness, many excursions revolve around forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes, but big cities and other attractions aren't far either. Some options could be done in a day trip, but most of them are best enjoyed for at least a long weekend or en route to the next stop of your road trip. Whether you're traveling with family, your partner, friends, or alone, don't miss out on the best spots to visit on your next trip.

Itasca State Park

About three and a half hours north of the Twin Cities is Minnesota's oldest state park, Itasca. The park is perhaps most famous for containing the headwaters of the Mississippi River , which originates in Lake Itasca as a tiny stream and continues for over 2,500 miles as a roaring river to the Gulf of Mexico. Itasca State Park is truly an all-season attraction, with activities ranging from hiking and swimming in the summer to ice fishing in the dead of winter. You can camp out during the warmer months of the year, but nearby log cabins and a youth hostel also provide affordable accommodations when it's too cold to sleep outside.

Distance from Minneapolis-St. Paul: 220 miles (324 kilometers)

The North Shore and Highway 61

State Highway 61 or MN 61—not to be confused with U.S. 61 which also goes through Minnesota—starts in Duluth, about two and a half hours north of Minneapolis–St. Paul. American legend and Duluth-native Bob Dylan sings about the route on his album, "Highway 61 Revisited," and it's one of the most scenic drives in the state. The route continues north toward Canada along the North Shore of Lake Superior, although the most breathtaking portions of the highway start about an hour north of Duluth.

Visit historic Split Rock Lighthouse and gorgeous Gooseberry Falls, the tallest of several waterfalls in the area. Admire Palisade Head, some of the tallest cliffs on the lake, and shop for Lake Superior Agates and local crafts at stores along Highway 61. The North Shore is one of the best areas in Minnesota to view the state's magnificent  fall colors . Several small towns in the area have lodging, such as camping, cabins, motels and fine hotels, as well as plenty of restaurants for casual or fine dining.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 156 miles (251 kilometers)

Lutsen Mountains

If you take the MN 61 scenic route, you can't miss out on Lutsen Mountains, the biggest ski and snowboard area in Minnesota. You can also cross-country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, dogsled,  ice climb , and more. The town and ski resort are about four hours from the Twin Cities or two hours north of Duluth. But even if you aren't visiting in the winter doesn't mean the mountain isn't worth a visit. In fact, fall is arguably the best time to make this drive. The pleasant weather and trees that appear to be ablaze with autumn colors make for a truly scenic experience unlike any other.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 250 miles (402 kilometers)

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Instead of driving up the North Shore from Duluth, you can also drive the other direction around Lake Superior, cross the state line, and get to Bayfield, Wisconsin. Bayfield is a great getaway in both summer and winter. In the summer, you can visit the remote Apostle Islands by kayaking to them and explore their cavernous insides. Even in winter, you can usually see these dramatic caves by just walking out to them across the frozen lake while they're filled with snow and giant icicles. Bayfield also offers opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and dogsledding. Keep an eye out for a hotel or cabin with a hot tub to warm up after a day of fun in the snow and ice.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 238 miles (383 kilometers)

New Ulm Chamber of Commerce

New Ulm, less than two hours from the Twin Cities, has a charming German downtown, tours of the historic Schell's Brewery, family-friendly Flandrau State Park, hiking and bike trails, and many annual festivals and cultural events. Named for the city of Neu-Ulm in southern Germany, the Bavarian influence is apparent the moment you step into town, and the city is proud of its cultural heritage. German Park is the place to be on a warm day as many of the local families come out to picnic on the lawn. If you don't have food to bring, pick up some traditional Bavarian fare at one of the local restaurants.

In the fall, the local brewery—founded in 1860 by a German immigrant—celebrates Oktoberfest. If you live in the Twin Cities area, it's much easier to get to New Ulm than it is to Munich.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 96 miles (155 kilometers)

St. Croix River Valley

The St. Croix River forms much of the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the lush area that surrounds it is called the St. Croix River Valley. Several cities, all within an hour or so of the Twin Cities, are good spots for weekend retreats, from Taylors Falls northeast of the Twin Cities to Osceola, Stillwater, Red Wing, Wabasha, and Winona in the south. All these towns have old-fashioned downtowns, charming hotels and motels, plenty of pretty scenery, and locally-owned restaurants. Altogether, they make for a peaceful getaway that doesn't require too much drive time to get there.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: Varies

Ely, in northern Minnesota about four hours from Minneapolis–St. Paul, is on the border of the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness and is the place to visit when you need solitude and a break from civilization. Reserve one of the many remote cabins set in the gorgeous scenery on the shore of a lake and you'll truly be in your own private escape. Rent a canoe and you're likely to be the only person within sight on the lake or go for a hike in the expansive backwoods without seeing another soul. You'll feel like your miles away from all other life, but you're still within easy reach of the city's restaurants and stores in case you need to grab something.

Ely is also home to two conservation organizations, the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center, and both are open to visitors.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 247 miles (298 kilometers)

If the Twin Cities are just one stop on a cross-country road trip, there's a good chance that Chicago is also one of the planned stops on your driving itinerary. Driving from Minneapolis–St. Paul to Chicago takes about six to seven hours depending on the traffic you encounter getting into the city , but you won't likely need your car to get around once you arrive. In a cosmopolitan city like Chicago, you can find something to do or some event going on at all times of the year. You can visit a local beach , hit up one of the city's many parks , or take a tour of a world-class museum .

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 405 miles (650 kilometers)

Wisconsin Dells

If you're heading to Chicago, you'll drive right through the town of Wisconsin Dells, more commonly known as just "the Dells." It's about three hours from the Twin Cities—just over halfway to Chicago—and is an especially great pitstop for families road tripping with kids, as the city is filled with family-friendly hotels and activities such as the largest waterpark in the country , CircusWorld, boat tours, ziplining, and more.

Nearby, Witches Gulch is a narrow canyon filled in with moss like a fairytale story, opening up to the Wisconsin River. A little south of town is Devil's Lake State Park, with its stunning quartzite rock formations. And there's plenty around town to keep mom and dad entertained , as well.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 213 miles (343 kilometers)

Michigan offers many destinations for summer and winter road trips. The Upper Peninsula has empty white-sand beaches along Lake Superior, gorgeous scenery such as Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, weird roadside attractions, historic mining towns, cheap lodging, and the fun college town of Marquette. The Lower Peninsula has many more miles of shoreline, Sleeping Bear Dunes, historical attractions, interesting towns and cities, and famous festivals like the National Cherry Festival in pretty Traverse City .

The sparsely populated but beautiful Upper Peninsula can be reached fairly quickly from the Twin Cities, as you can reach the Wisconsin-Michigan border in about five hours. The Lower Peninsula—the "mitten" shape—is a longer drive, roughly eight hours to reach the Michigan state line, but you can take a  car ferry  from Wisconsin to Michigan across the lake, which allows you to skip Chicago and many miles of driving.

The Black Hills of South Dakota

The Black Hills of South Dakota  is the site of a mountain range, beautiful forest, and breathtaking monuments—the most famous of which is Mt. Rushmore, although this national forest has so much more. It's a long drive from the Twin Cities, crossing a large part of the Great Plains and almost all of Minnesota and South Dakota, arriving right to the border of Wyoming. But if you're traveling west anyway, then the Black Hills are a perfect place to break up the trip.

Apart from the carved effigies of past presidents, you can see American bison in Custer State Park, explore the Wind and Jewel caves (two of the longest caves in the world), or drive the scenic route around Needles Highway. It's nearly 10 hours by car from Minneapolis-St. Paul, but the destination is well worth the time. Just imagine you're making the journey in a covered wagon to help pass the time.

Distance from Minneapolis–St. Paul: 616 miles (991 kilometers)

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

This fact check originally appeared on PolitiFact .

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

WATCH: Hauling large copy of Project 2025, Michigan state Sen. McMorrow speaks at 2024 DNC

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

WATCH: A look at the Project 2025 plan to reshape government and Trump’s links to its authors

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.
