If you make use of your RV in the winter, chances are you’ve struggled with finding an adequate heating source. With little insulation and plenty of spaces for air to leak , it can be a struggle to keep your RV comfortably warm during the winter months. While all of these heaters have unique benefits, infrared heaters are designed to heat the objects around them (including you) instead of heating the air. This allows for a consistent warmth that feels comfortable and even. Additionally, infrared heaters are the best portable heater source for maintaining the temperature in the room, rather than just providing a quick blast of heat. Some additional benefits of an infrared RV heater system are:

Power Requirements

When the temperature drops, you naturally run your RV’s furnace more frequently. Your furnace is the most efficient way to heat your RV and it will certainly do a reliable job, as long as you don’t run out of propane . 

Therein lies the rub of relying solely on your furnace as a heat source. Not only will you burn through propane quickly, but you’ll also use electricity to circulate hot air throughout your RV.

During the coldest months, you’ll burn through propane way faster than normal. If you can’t move your RV to refill or find a propane company that offers a mobile refill service, things in your RV will get dangerously cold dangerously fast. 

Plus, the more you run your RV furnace, the more you’ll need to do seasonal maintenance to keep your RV’s furnace in good working order . So, you can reduce seasonal maintenance and extend the life of your RV furnace by supplementing with a space heater. 

Some RV space heaters are even capable of heating your living space while using far less energy. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the space heater options for your home on the road.

The Different Types of Space Heaters for RVers

There are two main types of RV space heaters: electric and propane. There are also subcategories under each of these. As with many RV accessories , there are pros and cons to the power source you choose for your space heater.

Electric Space Heaters for RVs

If you want to reduce propane usage , go for an electric space heater. These require your RV to be connected to shore power, but they can significantly reduce the amount of propane you use when winter camping .

Electric RV space heaters come in a variety of options: infrared heaters, ceramic heaters, oil-filled heaters, and micathermic heaters. Here’s a little more about how each of these types of space heaters works. 

Infrared Heaters

Infrared heaters emit electromagnetic waves that heat up the physical objects in your RV. Instead of heating the air, these waves heat up your RV furniture , walls, flooring , and, yes, your body. 

They use the same thermodynamic principles that can be observed in the way the sun radiates heat that eventually warms up the Earth. This radiation allows infrared heaters to function effectively without the need for an internal fan, although some models have a fan that speeds up the heating process.  

Oil-Filled Heaters

Oil-filled radiant heaters do an excellent job of providing consistent heat in a quiet and extremely efficient manner. They don’t heat a room quickly, but once heated, the room will stay at a more consistent temperature. 

The internal body of these heaters is filled with a liquid called diathermic oil. This liquid is heated and then circulated through the heater’s columns. As the surface temperature of the columns rises, heat is released into the surrounding air. 

The tall and slender design of oil-filled heaters resembles old-fashioned residential radiators, but many include wheels for easy movement around your RV. They generally draw very little energy and they don’t have to run consistently to provide sufficient heat.

Disclaimer: Because of their tall designs, these heaters can be hard to secure while traveling. They are best for full-time RVers that remain in one location throughout the entire winter. 

Ceramic Heaters

Ceramic heaters generally use a small fan to circulate heat. They do an excellent job of providing heat quickly, but they tend to use slightly more energy. They’re also louder and you’ll have to listen to the fan kicking on and off frequently.

Internally, these heaters are built with ceramic plates attached to metal coils. When electricity passes through the coils, the plates heat up and continue to absorb heat until it is eventually dissipated into the surrounding air. 

If your ceramic heater has a fan, air blows over the coils and speeds up the distribution heat to your RV. While ceramic heaters without a fan are still an efficient way to use electricity to heat your RV, they take a little longer to warm a space than their fan-equipped counterparts.

Micathermic Heaters

Micathermic heaters combine the heat quality of radiant heaters with the speed and efficiency of convective heaters. They are built with internal panels covered in sheets of mica. When it is heated, mica is extremely effective at emitting electromagnetic waves. 

Just like infrared heaters, these waves heat up the objects in your RV. However, micathermic heaters are generally considered to provide better heat and can do so more efficiently than infrared heaters.

Propane Space Heaters for RVs

If you don’t have access to shore power, a small propane space heater could be the right choice for your RV. Propane heaters are also great for boondocking or long-term RV parks that charge more than you’re comfortable paying for electricity. 

Propane space heaters for RVs work wonderfully and are safe for indoor use. It is also easier to find replacement propane tanks for a small heater than it is to refill your RV’s onboard propane tank. 

They are considered to be the most portable type of portable space heater because you’re not limited by the length of a power cord when deciding where to position it. That means you can take your propane space heater outside and, while it might not offer the same ambiance as a portable fire pit , it will provide plenty of heat. 

Speaking of heat, propane heaters generally produce more heat than their electric counterparts. They are similar to infrared heaters because they emit electromagnetic waves that heat up objects in the space around them, but they run on liquid propane instead of electricity. 

You’ll find propane space heaters with and without circulating fans. The models with a fan will heat your living space faster, but designs without fans are still extremely effective at supplementing your RV’s furnace or when used as a standalone heating solution. 

Most propane space heaters that are designed for RV use, such as in a used motorhome or a used travel trailer , also have important safety features like an oxygen depletion sensor and a tip-over safety shut-off feature. As a result, you can rest easy knowing you aren’t endangering anyone if you use one of these heaters in your RV.

Final Thoughts on Space Heaters for RVs

As a final word of warning, it’s recommended to turn all RV space heaters off when you leave for several hours at a time. Rely on your RV’s furnace to keep things warm when you’re gone during the day. 

Propane and electric space heaters are generally safe for RV use but can cause damage if knocked over by your dog or a mischievous gust of wind when you aren’t around. So err on the side of caution and only use your space heater when you are present.

Thank you! People said no portable propane heater must be used indoor rv included!!! I feel they are wrong portable propane heater are safe and have a stop chock also common sense making sure like any other heater are away of combustible material or wood etc… during sleeping time I turn it off morning if too cold I fire it up for awhile as I have also 2 extra electric heaters…. I never turn my central propane heater wich suck too much of gaz and costly plus lots of heat goes outside loosing my calories thank you for your positive article

We have a 43′ motorhome we heat it with a portable electric fireplace in the livingroom and a oil filled radiant heater in the bedroom all suplemented by an Oasis deisel system all winter in Penticton BC. CANADA..

When using a nonvented propane space heater as is suggested in the article you must realize that when burning any hydrocarbon fuel such as propane, there will be quite a bit of moisture as a byproduct of combustion. This moisture will eventually condense on the ceilings and windows and walls, if used for any length of time this could cause damage to your unit.

Definitely an issue. Our rv furnace went out and we were not able to get it fixed for winter lasted year. Used a Mr. Heater brand big buddy which did a great job for heat but we didn’t realize the moisture until too late. Ended up with mold and wet walls and carpet. After that if we use one, it’s sparingly and we crack open a couple of windows which helps to dissipate the moisture.

We would like a 12 volt to keep the trailer heated while towing. Anyone know of one?

Two ceramic heaters, front / rear, 29 ft Class C, 30A. 8 years in Illinois. Doesn’t get any parts hot enough to start a fire. Should last at least 2 winters until the fan bearings squeal or the wire insulation goes.

Propane space heater

Good day to all.The factory fitted heating system fitted to our motor home which is a Swift champagne is the Truma combi 6 heating system which heats the water and blows hot air around the van , the unit is very efficient. On occasion when we need some instant heat we use a mini ceramic two speed electric fan heater when on electric hook up and also when we are sat in our full sized awning. This heater can also blow cool air as well.

There are certainly portable propane heaters that are designed for RV use. Their one downside is increasing the humidity inside your RV, which can lead to condensation. And, of course, it’s imperative to make sure they are safe for RV use and you never leave them unattended when turned on.

I call it the best boondocking heater because of its excellent safety features. If you are camping “off the grid,” then chances are you are far from help if something goes wrong. You will want to purchase a heater that has as many safety features as possible. 

This Mr. Heater model includes an automatic shut-off feature in case the heater tips over. In addition, the heater has an oxygen level sensor. It will shut off if the oxygen level falls below a certain point.

Tip 1. Auto Shut Off Safety Feature

A big RV fire safety tip is to only use electric heaters that automatically shut off if knocked over. Most new models have this feature, but not all do! So, be sure to check for this safety feature.

Tip 2. Figure Out Your Square Footage

Another top feature you will want to know is how many square feet the heater will cover. You may be happy with a personal heater, or you may want to keep your living room warm in the evenings.

Whatever your needs, you'll need to know the approximate square footage of the space you want to heat.

Tip 3. Get One with a Remote Control

I recommend purchasing an electric heater with a remote control. When it's cold outside, the last thing you want to do is move from underneath your cozy blanket. A remote control allows you to stay warm while also adjusting your RV's temperature. 

Tip 4. Pay Attention to Wattage

When we talked with our friend Mark Polk of  RVEduction101.com , he advised us to use electric heaters that are 750-1,000 watts. That's a good rule of thumb range to avoid overworking your electric system, however, there are a couple instances where RVers opt for more.

For one, some RV electric systems can handle more wattage (but you should check your owner's manual). For two, many RVers use their electric heaters at home and in their RV, and still want the higher wattage for home use.

In those two cases, you can get a higher-wattage electric heater, but consider only using it on the low setting. Safety first, after all!

RV Space Heaters – The Best Electric RV Heater

When it gets cold an RV can be a chilly place to inhabit!  RV propane furnaces are designed to adequately heat RV spaces, but they consume propane at a rapid pace.  Some people turn to electric space heaters to cut the chill.  So, what is the best electric RV heater to help you when the weather turns cold?

For travel trailers and 5th wheels, it is fairly easy to pull the propane tanks out of the RV and get them filled.  If the RV park that you are staying in sells propane, it can be a quick exchange to get heat back on in the RV.  If you have to locate a local propane facility this can be more of a challenge.  Propane can also be expensive!  And, RVers feel like if they are paying for electric why also pay for propane, so they look for RV space heaters to solve the problem.

For those of us that have motorized RV’s with ASME propane tanks, this can be more of a challenge.  For those of us that live full-time in our RV’s, and work camp in a location for months on end, getting propane is an issue.  It involves unhooking all services, retracting slideouts, getting interior items ready for travel, and moving the RV to a facility that can fill the ASME tank.  We have found that not all propane sellers have the equipment to fill RV ASME tanks.

What we have done is to augment our heating systems by using an RV space heater.  The heating sources we have installed on our RV, which we call Miss Tiffy, is a Suburban propane heater, a Coleman Mach heat pump that is part of the roof AC unit, and a fireplace unit that puts out about five thousand btu’s.  When the temperatures drop below forty degrees the heat pump is not able to be used due to how it produces heat.

Our problem is not that we don’t have enough good heating sources in our full-time RV home, it is that when the propane heater is used the seventeen-gallon propane tank will be empty in a few days.  Then we have to move the RV to get it filled. 

Whenever we move the RV there is always a list of things that need to happen before the RV can hit the road.  Whether we move it one hundred feet or one hundred miles, the same things have to happen, and they take time.  When we move the RV we want it to be because we are traveling to a new location, not because we need fuel.

Now, we can install what is called an extend-a-stay system to the ASME tank that allows us to use a small refillable DOT tank.  But, after having used an RV space heater in our RV’s, we prefer to do that instead.  Plus I really don’t want to be carrying an extra propane tank.

So what did Howard and Pam decide was the best electric RV space heater for Miss Tiffy?

Over our years of home ownership, and RV ownership, we have used many electric space heaters.  In our basement, in our large Colorado home, we used infrared space heaters to cut the chill.  We lived at 9,300 feet above sea level.  It was cold nine months out of the year!  We also had ceramic space heaters and oil filled space heaters, the kind that looks like an old-style wall radiator.  Of all the types we used we liked the infrared heater the best.

In fact, when we sold the house to begin the full-time RV lifestyle we kept the heaters and used them in our first full-time RV home.  They worked great but they were just too big to use once we got our next full-time RV home, so we sold them.

Now that we have Miss Tiffy we decided to augment our installed RV heating options with another infrared heater.  The question was which one?  When we bought our others they were close to $500 each and they were the size of small end tables.  So my thoughts were, have they reduced in price and size since I last purchased one?

Since I am a big fan of Amazon and a member of Amazon Prime , I decided to start my research there.  I searched RV space heaters and electric space heaters and came up with many options.  Then I started looking at space heaters that could heat larger areas like living rooms.  Since our RV is a little over three hundred square feet, I was looking for a unit that could handle double that due to we live in an RV, not a house.  It is not as well insulated as a house.

So here is what information I found and used to make my decision on the right type of RV space heaters that would work for our needs.

Why Choose an Infrared RV Space Heater

Most RV space heaters are noisy.  Before purchasing our infrared heater, we bought a little 1,500-watt ceramic unit for our previous RV, Frank.  Frank was much smaller than Miss Tiffy and we needed an additional source of heat during a cold spell last year.  When it got down to sixteen degrees around the Dallas area, we had to do something to keep things from freezing.

The little ceramic heater did the job but it was noisy, its exterior surfaces got extremely hot which concerned us with our dogs, and we could not leave it unattended without worrying that it could cause a fire.

I still have the heater and use it as a backup if I want to warm the plumbing bay, but we now rely fully on our infrared heater.

With a round, 360° design, we liked that it can heat a group of people without them having to crowd to one side of the unit. It also offered a wider heat range—up to 15 feet—than other models we tested. It took about a minute to feel any heat after turning it on, but once we did, it was noticeably warm. There are only two heat settings, and we felt a significant difference between the two.

When we tested the patio heater at home in our backyard, we noted its quiet operation and simple controls. We liked that even on chilly and windy November nights, it provided us with strong heat. However, if you live in a warmer climate, you may not need this strong of a patio heater as the heat was almost too strong for us at one point. 

This unit is 57 inches tall, and we appreciated that the height allowed us to both stand up and sit down without feeling like any part of our bodies were cold. However, the height did add some concern when we tested the heater’s stability. The base was wide, and we weren’t able to knock it over easily by bumping into it—but it did wobble more than others we tested. Thankfully, this patio heater does boast tip over shut-off protection, so if a fall does occur, it should turn off.

The biggest downside to this patio heater was the assembly. The instructions were not easy to understand, especially for beginners. We also had to provide our own batteries and screwdriver, and the unit was missing two screws. Overall, especially for the price point, we think the assembly should have gone smoother. 

How It Performed After Two Months

After two months of use, we were still impressed with the heater's performance. It kept us warm for several hours on windy days and chilly nights, and we'd still recommend it after continued use.

Of all the options we tested, this model from Star Patio surpassed our expectations for patio heaters that work well in small spaces. It’s a tabletop model that resembles a table lamp, but at 27 inches tall, we think it’s a bit large to sit on a dining table. When testing it over a period of two months, we preferred setting it on a side table close to where we sat. We tested it both outside and inside, and we think it works best for a smaller enclosed patio or three-season porch . It didn’t heat us well outdoors, especially in windy conditions.

The design is very straightforward; just pull the string to turn it on. Assembly was just as simple and took us less than three minutes. However, the simple design does have some drawbacks: It didn’t come with a remote, and there’s only one heat setting, which was only strong enough for one or two people sitting closeby.

When it comes to safety, we were glad that it never felt too hot to the touch. The heater felt sturdy overall, but since it could be knocked down by a big bump to the table, we do wish it had an auto-off protection for added safety. Overall, however, we think this is still a solid choice for a small, enclosed area .

Like in our earlier tests, our long-term use highlighted that this heater is best used in smaller, enclosed patios or garages. We had a hard time feeling the heat outdoors and from further distances. That being said, the heater continued to operate without any distracting noises or quality concerns, and we still recommend it for the right spaces.

Doubling as an electric patio heater and a bistro table, we often found ourselves hanging around the heater with friends throughout the testing period. In both our lab test and at-home testing, the tabletop itself stayed cool and we could keep cold drinks on it without melting the ice.

When sitting at the table, the heating component (which doubles as the table’s leg) was strong. In fact, the single heat setting was almost too strong for us and it wasn’t comfortable to sit directly at the table. Instead, we found ourselves setting our drinks down and backing up a bit. The tabletop also blocked the heat from reaching our upper bodies, so we still needed to wear coats. And once we were about three feet away from the unit, we couldn’t feel any heat. Because of this, we think this would be best on a small, apartment patio rather than a larger patio on a single-family home.

Assembly was easy, as long as you have a second person to help. When we first set it up, did note a faint smell like burning plastic, but that went away after a couple of hours. Operating the unit is easy—just turn the switch and you’re ready to go. Keep in mind, we found the power cable to be shorter than we'd like and placed at an awkward height, so we had to adhere it to the floor to ensure it wasn't a tripping hazard.

After regular use, we didn't notice any change in the table's quality. The top stayed cool to the touch, and the heat output was consistent. However, our long-term test highlighted that this table is best for standing at rather than sitting and enjoying a full meal. We found the heat too strong and tabletop too small to comfortably sit near the table, as our knees were too close to the heating element.

The SereneLife Infrared Outdoor Electric Space Heater was the best electric patio heater we tested. We appreciated the easy-to-use remote control and consistent heating. We found it’s best for keeping a group of four toasty without taking up too much space.

To come up with our list of the best electric patio heaters, we put top models to the test in our Des Moines, Iowa testing lab. After our initial insights, we took the best-performing patio heaters and tested them in our own backyards over the course of six months to evaluate how they held up in the real world. We rated each patio heater for setup, heating performance, ease of use, safety, and value. 

After the electric patio heaters arrived, we timed ourselves unboxing and assembling each unit, noting how difficult it was to put together, how clear the instructions were, and if we needed to provide any tools.

Once the patio heater was ready for use, we evaluated the heating performance by taking our surface body temperature before and after five minutes of sitting 3 feet away from the unit. For patio heaters with multiple heat settings, we cycled through each setting and recorded the results. Next, we left the heaters on their highest setting and measured the maximum distance we could feel warmth from the heater.

To test the safety, we took the temperature of the heater itself at three different areas of the unit both while operating and five minutes after turning it off, noting how hot the surface was if accidentally touched. We also purposely bumped into the heater to determine if it knocked over easily.

Lastly, we set up the patio heaters in our own backyards to use them in our everyday lives to test long-term durability, noting any signs of wear or change in quality.

What to Know About Electric Patio Heaters Before Shopping

Heat range and output.

The heat output of a patio heater is often measured in BTUs, short for British Thermal Units. This refers to the strength of heat output over a period of time, typically an hour. Most electric patio heaters range around 5,000 BTUs, which should be suitable for a small patio. If you want a stronger heat output, you’ll need to pick a gas-powered model. 

Heat range refers to how far you can feel the heat from the unit. Most electric patio heaters we tested listed their heat range from 5 to 15 feet. We felt heat the furthest from our splurge pick, the SereneLife Infrared Outdoor Electric Space Heater .

It’s important to note that the heat you feel from an electric patio heater largely depends on the weather conditions and placement of the heater. If you place the unit under a covered patio or in an area with high walls, the heat is easier to trap, and you will feel warmer.

“In your best scenario, you might change the feeling of the outside temperature five to 10 degrees,” says Eric Kahn , founder of Alfresco Heating. Because of this, you won’t find any patio heater effective in very cold conditions. We found the electric patio heaters best to use in 50°F to 60°F weather.

Certification

When shopping for patio heaters, you’ll notice that the devices typically include third-party safety certifications. It’s rare to find a patio heater without a safety certification, and we recommend making sure the model you purchase has one before use. Each of our top picks was either ETL- or UL-certified.

It’s also important to look for a device’s IP rating, which refers to the level of protection against foreign objects. IP ratings include two numbers. The first digit refers to the level of protection against solids like dust, dirt, or tools. The second digit refers to protection against moisture. The ratings range from 0 (no protection) to 6 (total protection for solids) or 9 (total protection for liquids) and if a value is X, it means that it was either not rated or the protection is 0. 

An IP rating ending in 4 is the minimum recommended protection for keeping a patio heater outdoors. Each of our top picks were certified and provided IP ratings, except the West Elm Standing Heater, which we could not find an IP rating clearly labeled.

Auto Shut-off

Safety should be top of mind when operating a patio heater, and many models offer additional features for safer operations, including auto shut-off. The type of auto shut-off the device offers is important to note, as there are two different types.

If a patio heater has tip-over auto shut-off, that means the device will shut off if it falls. This works by detecting when the unit tilts or is no longer on a flat surface, turning the unit off. While this adds extra protection, you should still stay nearby during operation in case of a fall. Electric patio heaters do not cool off immediately and can be a fire hazard if they fall.

Many electric patio heaters also offer overheating protection and turn off when the unit gets too hot. Even if your patio heater has this feature, you should always be cautious as a few of the units we tested were still very hot to the touch during operation.

Adjustable Temperature

With these units, once you turn the heater on and it warms up, it will push out the same amount of heat at all times. With that in mind, you may want to consider choosing a unit with adjustable heat settings, especially if you’ll be at varying distances from the heater.

Remote Control

Remote controls aren’t a necessary feature in a patio heater, but they’re useful nonetheless. Most remote controls allow you to turn the unit on and off as well as change the temperature without going near the unit. While electric patio heaters are more convenient to use than propane or natural gas heaters , there are still safety precautions to take while operating. Always make sure to stay near the patio heater while it’s turned on. While a standalone unit may be sturdy, there’s always a risk of it tipping over and creating a fire hazard. Be mindful of cords when choosing where to place your electric patio heater and prioritize spots where the cord is out of walkways.

If there are pets or children in your home, be sure to monitor them around any patio heater. While many units have protective cages to prevent you from touching a hot grill, the body of the units can still get hot to the touch. When we took the temperatures of the grills, the hottest we found topped over 600°F—definitely hot enough to cause a burn. And make sure the unit is completely cooled before moving it; We found multiple patio heaters were still warm to the touch five minutes after turning them off.

Other Electric Patio Heaters We Tested

When testing the Heat Storm Tripod Electric Patio Heater , we were impressed with the heat output overall; we could feel the heat from 6 feet away. We also liked that you can change the height to fit your needs, though it can only be adjusted with a wrench, not during operation. The biggest flaw we found was the three-legged stand, which we found could be knocked over fairly easily. While the heater offers tip-over protection, it doesn’t have a guard to protect the heater grill from touching any fire hazards when tipped over.

The Westinghouse Infrared Electric Outdoor Heater doesn’t have many bells and whistles, especially for its price point. Similarly priced models offered multiple heat settings and a remote, unlike this option. Plus, we found the single heat setting to be inconsistent during testing. And at only waist-high, it didn’t provide warmth to anyone in a standing position.

AZ Patio Heaters Ground Electric Patio Heater 

At first, we were excited at how small and portable this option from AZ Patio Heaters was. However, we had issues during assembly as there were no instructions and some pieces weren’t drilled correctly. And once we turned it on, the metal housing on this unit became extremely hot. It doesn’t have any warning labels either, and since it sits on the ground, we think it poses a safety risk for children and pets.

How many BTUs should a patio heater have?

The recommended BTUs for a patio heater largely depends on the size of your patio and the weather you’ll be using it in. A patio that’s only 100 square feet won’t need a super powerful heater and may only need an output of 5,000 BTUs. However, the best heaters for large patios (up to 1,000 square feet) will range up to 20,000 BTUs.

Electric patio heaters are less powerful than natural gas or propane models , so if you need to heat a larger area, you may consider choosing a gas-powered heater instead.

What size patio heater is best?

Typically, smaller patio heaters will not be as powerful as larger patio heaters, so the size you choose comes down to the space you have and the amount of heat you need. You may also consider the portability and storage of the patio heater, especially if you will need to store it indoors over the winter. 

While we didn’t test any wall-mounted units, if you have a small patio, they might be something to consider to save floor space. “Wall-mounted heaters can be attached to a masonry wall or a structure such as a pergola, gazebo, or fence,” says Amber Scott Freda, interior designer and owner of Amber Freda Home & Garden Design.

Are patio heaters safe to use in an enclosed area?

Propane and natural gas patio heaters require ventilation and should not be used in covered patios or garages. On the other hand, electric patio heaters are safe to use in an enclosed area. Always make sure to check the product’s instruction manual to ensure it’s approved for covered use. We tested many of the smaller units in our garages and enclosed patios and thought the Star Patio Electric Tabletop Patio Heater was one of the best electric patio heaters for an enclosed space.

We noted that the noise coming from the space heater was nearly unnoticeable, which was pleasantly surprising considering how much heat was produced. If it wasn’t for the smell of the hot air around this heater, the device is so quiet we would’ve forgotten it was on. Even with seven fan speed options, the highest decibel reading we recorded was 46.6. 

While we were impressed with its performance, we wish the space heater’s exterior was different. It doesn’t display what temperature of air is being emitted nor its volume. The only information that can be gathered from looking at the machine is which heat setting was selected of the three: low, medium, and high. However, its switches and dials were easy to use since they were bright red and black. 

We were most impressed with its safety features including tip shut off which turns off the machine once it tips past 25 degrees. It also offers an over-temperature shut-off which detects any airflow restrictions and a standard grill to prevent fingers from slipping inside the gadget.

A built-in handle made the machine easy to carry and provided a fitting spot to keep its remote when not in use. We found that this space heater does produce a bit of noise. Although the sound resembles a white noise, it was certainly more than we had been expecting considering its smaller size.

The heater also maintains touch-safe temperatures across its housing, getting hot on the grill, but not so hot as to prove dangerous to pets or children—a feature that’s quite handy in a portable space heater that might get moved around frequently. 

Throughout our long-term testing, we used this little space heater to warm us when our home’s HVAC system wasn’t working properly, and we were grateful to have it. We especially enjoyed bringing the unit out to our porch to enjoy breakfast outside on chilly mornings.

It oscillates to cover about 90 degrees of space, a feature we found useful to intentionally heat a room instead of blowing air in a single direction.

We measured the space heater’s nose output at 48.1 decibels. While this isn’t the quietest pick on our list, we didn’t find the noise too distracting, and we appreciated that the noise level stayed the same on both high and low settings due to the machine’s singular fan speed. 

As for safety features, this space heater has plenty with both tip-over and overheat protection, automatic power shut off, and a 12-hour timer. When the device is tipped over, it shuts off and emits loud beeps to notify you of a fall for extra peace of mind. 

During testing, we noticed that the body of the gadget remains cool when in use, but the grill does get very hot. Since it’s a larger unit with more grill exposed, it may not be the best pick for families with young kids or curious pets. 

What sets this space heater apart is its simplicity. We liked that it has simple controls and settings that can be easily adjusted as needed. The heater allows you to adjust the temperature between 41–95ºF and during testing, the device was able to increase our body temperature by 10ºF. 

Because tower space heaters are more vulnerable to falls thanks to their added height, safety features like tip-over protection are extra important. When we knocked this device over, it took just five seconds to shut off. For extra peace of mind, this heater also includes overheat protection and an eight-hour timer.

One thing to keep in mind is that the settings on this space heater weren’t clear, and the instruction manual wasn’t the best at explaining every feature. But once we set it up, we found the digital panel easy to control.

However, after six months of regular use, the oscillating feature began making a clicking noise. Because this was an affordable heater, the noise wasn’t a deal breaker—but we recommend using it for shorter cold spells rather than all winter long.

If you can’t decide between getting a permanent option and a portable one, this model’s flexibility make it a great pick.

Infrared heat doesn’t do as well at raising the overall ambient temperature of the room as it does heating objects.

Delivering between 750 and 1500-Watt heat paired with a fan, this infrared heater does a good job at keeping you warm. Our tester gave it a 4 out of 5 at keeping them warm, though they found that the heater did little to increase the overall warmth of the air, mostly warming their skin only. Because the heating element is infrared, the heater did little to affect the overall humidity of the room. If you fear the drying heat of traditional hot water radiators and convection heaters then you’ll appreciate how this heater warms your flesh without turning your living space into a desert. 

When you’re looking for a heater to install permanently, the Heat Storm Phoenix Infrared Space Heater is one of the best around. This inframakes it easy to change setting from a distance. However, though this heater works great installed on a wall, don’t assume this is the only way to use it; this versatile heater also comes with feet, and is lightweight and portable enough to carry around with you.

Thankfully this heater does a good job with the standard safety features. Tipped over, our tester found that the heater shut off its heating function quickly, displaying an error message, even while it continued to run its fan to cool the heating element. The heater’s front grill also stays remarkably cool—our tester measured it heating to just 90 degrees during use. With a timer function built in, you can also program your heater to stop heating when you know you’ll be finished. Overheat protection is included as well for added safety. 

Our tester appreciated the heater’s remote control options, but did find that some of the remote’s buttons were not as responsive as they would have liked, requiring a small bout of button mashing to adjust its controls, which include temperature adjustments, fan speed, and brightness. We also appreciated the versatility it provided with the installable feet, though our tester found them to be somewhat flimsy. Feet aside, it’s a great infrared heater for installation in your home. 

The space heater is still performing properly after six months, and we’ve appreciated using it in different areas throughout our home. If you opt to use it as a freestanding unit, like we did during the first few months, note that it takes a bit longer for the heat to rise from the bottom of the unit. After we mounted it on the wall, we found the heat to circulate the room much easier.

The effects weren’t as immediately noticed as some other heaters.

The Dreo DR-HSH004A is the best space heater for personal use. Whether you’re looking for a space heater to take into the bathroom or one for a small bedroom, this one which heats via forced air and convection is a great pick. Since it immediately shuts off when it comes into contact with small quantities of water, you can rest assured that it is safer for a bathroom setting, especially if you plan on keeping it on when taking a shower or washing your hands.

When it comes to design, the unit is user-friendly thanks to its LED front lights which display important information about its settings and temperature. While the space heater came with a user manual, we didn’t feel inclined to look through it after initially setting it up as it is a straightforward gadget. The remote worked well when tested from 2 to 8 feet away. The noise coming from this machine could barely be heard and was quieter than the fan in the home where it was tested.  

The space heater offers a wide oscillation and we found it able to effectively spread out the heat. While the heating effect wasn’t noticeable right away, the room we tested in eventually became so hot that we had to move to a different room when recording insights. The heater’s body grew warm, and we could only keep our hands between 6 and 10 inches away from the top without growing too uncomfortable. However, the buttons to adjust the settings did not feel hot when touched.

The Vornado 1500-Watt Fan Utility Indoor Electric Space Heater makes its quality obvious from first glance, with metal housing that’s detailed, retro, and actually cute. Available in an attractive “vintage green” or off-white, which call to mind barbershops of old and 1950s soda fountains, this Vornado sports retro aesthetics and dependability, that’s guaranteed for 5 years of dependable heating.

Providing between 750 and 1500 watts, this heater delivers power commensurate with the other heavy hitters on this list, and flips between low and high mode with a simple metal switch. Our tester found that the heater delivered a heat that was markedly “soft” compared with some others. Set up about 3 feet away, they appreciated how the heater was easy to tilt into position, aiming the air stream away when they got too hot, and directing it back onto them when they were ready for more. 

This premium Vornado did a stellar job with our tip test, shutting off right away when tipped over. Our only safety concern with this device is its front grill, which our reviewer measured at 186 degrees. However, this is far less than some other heaters on this list, and should only be a concern for those with infants, or particularly inquisitive pets. They also noted that the metal housing didn’t become too hot, even when the heater was running at high. 

After almost daily use, we’re confident this space heater will last for years to come. Despite its small size, it’s fairly heavy so we haven’t had any issues accidentally knocking it over. It only takes half an hour for our room to increase about 5ºF, and we plan on using the heater in future cold seasons.

For those looking for a space heater that doubles as a fireplace, Better Homes & Gardens Rounded Corner Electric Stove Heater with Remote is the best—and for good reason. While it was heavier than some of the other space heaters we tested, it’s lighter than most electric fireplaces and we didn’t have any trouble moving the unit around. This space heater is more expensive than some others, but we found its features to be worth the cost. 

When it comes to design, this unit is shaped to fit nicely in a corner. Although we didn’t think its flames looked too realistic, we didn’t think they detracted from the machine’s overall aesthetic, either. We particularly liked that the heat could be adjusted independently and without impacting the brightness. Regardless of how you like to control devices, this one provides the ability to do so manually or using its included remote which we found easy to operate, although it only worked when pointed directly at the heater. 

The unit was quiet during operation. It has five brightness settings to adjust the look of the flame. And while it offers a temperature range from 55ºF to 90ºF, we never measured a room temperature over 84ºF, even on its highest setting.

Our favorite space heater overall is the Vornado VH200 Personal Space Heater with Vortex Circulation Technology as it’s able to heat up a room in only a couple of minutes and do so quietly. It also quickly turns off when tipped for an added level of safety. 

Our Testing Process

We’ve been testing space heaters since 2022, with a total of 43 units put to the test in our testing lab. We measured a number of factors, noting the temperatures of our bodies and room before and after engaging the heater, as well as measuring the sound decibels made by the device during operation, the kilowatt hours used, how quickly the machine shut-off when tipped, and more. 

If a unit included a remote control, we tested it at 2, 4, and 8 feet from the device, noting how easy it was to operate. We considered how far oscillating heaters turned and how far we felt the heating effect throughout the room. For units with tip-over shutoff protection, we lighty kicked the unit to test how easy it was to knock over, then noted how quickly the device turned off during the fall. 

Finally, we rated each heater for their performance at each metric, and compared them all, looking for the best space heater in each category.

What To Know About Space Heaters

Heating element.

Space heaters use a few different heat elements to create and distribute heat. There’s no consensus as to which of these designs makes for the best space heater, but there are ways to choose which one is best for you. 

Ceramic heaters, like our best tower pick, the Better Homes & Garden 23 inch Tower Ceramic Heater , electrically warm a ceramic surface which radiates heat. Similarly, electric wire heaters heat a wire, which radiates heat. Both ceramic and metal elements are frequently used in convection heaters which use fans to push warm air out, and pull unheated air across the heated surface. 

Infrared heaters, on the other hand, use wire paired with ceramic or quartz, and radiate infrared energy outwards; they provide the benefit of converting more energy directly into heat. Infrared heaters transfer less heat to the air, without stripping humidity from it as many convection heaters do. Our best splurge pick, the Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace Stove , is a great example of an infrared heater. Still, other types use mica paired with the heating element to distribute both infrared and convection heat.

Safety is highly important in space heaters . It’s always important to keep space heaters well away from showers and baths. Outside of their potential for spillage induced shock, good space heaters keep you pretty safe—still there’s a few things to keep in mind. When you’re looking for the best space heater for your needs, don’t forget to make sure that it has a reputable tip-over shut off function that will cut out the power if the heater falls over. This can be invaluable for keeping your heater from starting fires. 

When asked about resources for researching the safety of products Dr. Kenneth L d’Entremont , professor at the University of Utah’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ergonomics & Safety Program, says, “One thing that I would ask people to look at is the US Consumer Product Safety Commission , or the CPSC, and SaferProducts.gov . They list recalls for consumer products. I would encourage everyone to take a look at that—to look at the product as well as the manufacturer—does that manufacturer have lots and lots of recalls?”

Some space heaters warn you not to connect their power source to an extension cord, about which Dr. d’Entremont says, “Space heaters are unlike your phone charger, your phone charger won't draw much current, but a space heater will. And sometimes if you use a very inexpensive, thin extension cord, you could run the risk of heating that up.” Dr. d’Entremont also noted that extension cords can create a trip hazard, which can be dangerous if the space heater has been running and the exterior is hot.

Most of the heaters we featured use between 750 and 1500 watts. This is a good range for standard room sizes that will heat your space but won’t blow your fuse box. Lower wattage heaters that are designed for personal up close use can also be worth it, but consider that they likely won’t heat a room as well as higher wattage options. 

You might think that every 1500 watt heater would consume power the same way, but this isn’t the case. Not only will some high-quality heaters (like infrared heaters) do a better job than others with converting power to heat, but they’ll also use less energy to do it. How much energy a heater uses is measured in kilowatt hours, which measures the energy draw per hour of your device. This information can be helpful in assessing the overall cost of your heater to run.

We all want to save a penny where we can, but when you’re buying a space heater it’s important to make sure you’re spending enough to get a heater from a reputable brand. 

It’s also important to remember that sometimes higher ticket items might cost you more upfront but save you money over the long term, as their premium builds stand the test of time, and their longer warranties ensure they continue to go.

Almost all of the heaters we featured, including our best overall pick, the Vornado VH200 Personal Space Heater with Vortex Circulation Technology , were below the median price of the heaters we tested, but we do think spending more is worth it for more design-friendly exteriors or nice-to-have features like timers or remotes.

Other Space Heaters We Tested

Dr Infrared Heater Portable Space Heater : While our tester found that the Dr Infrared heater didn’t deliver quite enough heat output to make an impact on the whole room, it did a good job when positioned close by. In the end we think that’s what the Dr Infrared excels at: It’s a wheeled space heater that does a good job with portability. Its retro design is either a perk or liability depending on your preference.

Lasko My Heat Space Heater : This mini-heater puts all its eggs in the portability basket, and in fact it's sized just right to be an incubator. The Lasko doesn’t have enough heating power to compete with most of our heater selections, but it does do a good job as a personal desk heater. Keep it close and it will keep you warm, just be mindful of the fact that this mini-heater does not have a tip-over shut off feature, so be careful with how you position it.

De'Longhi Ceramic Tower Heater : This ceramic tower heater has two fan settings with a range of temperature settings, and while it includes a remote control and lots of tweaks and options, the usefulness of this feature set is limited by its heat output, which our testers found a little lacking, after it only warmed their body by about two degrees in 30 minutes. Still, testers said that this tower heater could be a good pick for use close-up under a desk—if the higher-than-average price tag doesn’t bother you.

What style of space heater is the most energy efficient.

For the most part, radiant infrared heaters are the most energy-efficient heaters and the best space heaters for saving money on electricity. These heaters convert electricity directly into infrared heat which directly heats bodies and objects, thereby losing less heat to the atmosphere of your room. 

If you’ve already decided on a convection heater and you want to get as much efficiency as possible out of it, consider using it in rooms that are well-insulated; space heaters that heat the air around them do a much more efficient job at heating a room when that room retains heat well.

Can I keep my space heater on all night?

The short answer is no, you shouldn’t. Even when used properly, space heaters can get extremely hot and shouldn’t be left on unattended—and that includes when you’re asleep. It’s better to heat up the space for an hour or two while you’re winding down for sleep, then turning off the heater and using down comforters , cozy PJs, or wool blankets to keep you warm throughout the night.

We now have a dizzying array of heating technologies to consider, besides the fire that warmed our ancestors.

Salespeople will highlight any number of features and minor conveniences. You will be made aware of limited-offer discounts, product warranties, trends in certain Nordic countries, or their low cost (at least in the short-term). What you are less likely to read on the box is, well, the stuff that really matters: the long-term effects on your health and the health of your family, your neighbours and the environment.

Yes, a heater should keep you warm affordably. After all, a warm home is vital for your health. But would you run a heater that you knew was increasing the likelihood of your child developing asthma, your partner developing lung cancer, and your neighbour or your grandparent suffering a stroke or heart attack?

Many peer-reviewed studies have found domestic heating to be a major source of air pollution and of ill health in Australia. So which heaters are high-risk and which are low-risk? Let’s consider, firstly, the most dangerous heaters.

Extreme-risk heaters

Two rules reduce the risks:

never burn anything (wood, gas or other fuel) in your home without adequate ventilation such as a chimney, exhaust or flue

never use an outdoor appliance (heater, cooker, barbecue) inside.

Concerningly, a 2022 Asthma Australia survey found 7% of Australians used an unflued gas heater.

When gas or other fuel is burnt indoors it releases a range of particles and toxic gases . Most dangerous of all is carbon monoxide (CO). This colourless, odourless gas can build up in unventilated homes, resulting in serious poisoning and death.

A recent case of carbon monoxide intoxication left three people unconscious in a Sydney home after an outdoor barbecue was used inside as a heater. Outdoor heaters, cookers and barbecues are especially potent sources of carbon monoxide and should never be brought inside.

If you have a gas appliance in your home, even if it is ventilated, install a carbon monoxide alarm for as little as $30.

High-risk heaters

The evidence is now very clear: wood heater smoke is a potent source of air pollution and significant cause of ill-health in Australia.

The more often you burn, the greater the risk. One large population study found even infrequent wood heater use (30 days or more each year) increases the risk of lung cancer by 68%.

Wood heaters spill smoke into the home when refuelling. They also suck smoke from outside back into the home as air is drawn up the chimney.

If you can smell your wood heater, it is harming your health and exposing you to a toxic mix of particles and gases.

For the wider community, the cumulative health impacts of wood heaters are significant.

Less than 10% of Australian households use a wood heater. Yet they are the largest source of particulate air pollution in most Australian cities and towns, including Sydney , Melbourne , Canberra , Adelaide and Hobart . Even in temperate Sydney, wood heaters emit more of this pollution than all the cars, trucks, boats and buses combined, and more than coal-fired power stations and industry.

Centre for Safe Air researchers estimate wood heaters cause between 558 and 1,555 excess deaths a year in Australia. That’s roughly equivalent to the annual road toll .

Fine particles (2.5 microns or less in diameter – also known as PM2.5) are a major component of wood smoke. PM2.5 increases rates of heart disease and stroke , lung disease , dementia and other neurological conditions and asthma attacks . Risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes and poorer learning outcomes in children are also increased.

Moderate-risk heaters

Evidence suggests there is no “safe” level of air pollution, with health effects seen at very low levels .

Flued gas heaters, which vent exhaust gases out of the home, can still expose residents to PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. Over time, this can have a range of health impacts , including worsening asthma and respiratory symptoms.

Even ducted gas heating, which has an external heating unit, has the problem that burning gas adds to greenhouse gas emissions.

As Australia transitions to a zero-carbon society, some states and territories are phasing out installation of new wood heaters, such as in the ACT , and gas connections, such as in Victoria . Subsidies to help people replace unhealthy heaters are excellent investments in the environment, public health and health equity.

Healthy heaters

Ultimately, heaters that do not rely on burning fuel inside the home are the safest, and often more affordable, heating option.

A well-maintained reverse-cycle air conditioner, sometimes called a heat pump, actually cleans the air inside your home.

These air conditioners have the additional benefit of cooling your home in summer. As heatwaves become more severe and frequent, efficient cooling is increasingly important for health .

As for affordability, an efficient reverse-cycle air conditioner can be up to seven times as efficient as a gas wall heater in the energy it uses for a given amount of heat.

There are many other electric heating technologies – such as fan heaters, oil column heaters, panel heaters, or infrared heaters – that do not release toxins into the home.

Heater manufacturers are often reluctant to talk about the health impacts of their products, and regulators are slow to catch up with the science.

By thinking about heating in terms of health, you can make your home safer for yourself and the people around you.

After all, there’s nothing cosier than a healthy home.
