Best Time to do Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari

Embarking on a Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari is a journey that can be enjoyed year-round, each season offering a unique perspective of the park’s vibrant ecosystem. However, to optimize your safari experience, considering the weather, wildlife activity, and visitor traffic is key. Here’s a guide to help you decide the best time for your adventure:

Weather Considerations

  • Summer (March to May) : With temperatures soaring up to 35°C, the landscape turns dry, drawing animals to watering holes, which can increase your chances of sightings, especially tigers. Despite the heat, the visibility is high, making it a favored season for wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Monsoon (June to September) : The park transforms into a lush paradise, though heavy rains may limit animal sightings as they seek shelter. This season offers a unique experience with fewer tourists and a vibrant, green backdrop, but be prepared for humid conditions and occasional safari route closures.
  • Winter (October to February) : The cool and pleasant climate, with temperatures dropping to 10°C, makes winter an ideal time for comfortable safaris. This season attracts elephants and other herbivores to the open, grazing on the lush grasslands, against a picturesque setting.

Wildlife Sightings

  • Summer : Exceptional for observing tigers, as well as a plethora of birds and reptiles congregating around water sources.
  • Monsoon : Less favorable for sightings due to dense foliage and animals’ preference to stay sheltered from the rain.
  • Winter : Excellent for viewing elephants and a variety of herbivores in their natural habitats, enjoying the fresh vegetation.

Visitor Traffic

  • Peak tourist times align with the summer and winter seasons, particularly on weekends and holidays, owing to the pleasant weather and optimal wildlife viewing conditions. To avoid crowds and enjoy a serene safari experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during the quieter monsoon season.

By aligning your visit with these insights, you can enhance your Bandipur Tiger Safari experience, whether you seek thrilling wildlife encounters, tranquil nature explorations, or simply the beauty of the changing seasons.

Once the private hunting grounds of the maharaja, Bandipur is unapologetically wild terrain. Elephants roam in large herds, deer stare at you brazenly and peafowl flit in and out as they deem fit. Nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. The Bandipur Safari Lodge is your way of being a part of this ecological haven.

We all have a role to play in maintaining the ecological balance. Nothing makes you more aware of how much we take for granted than a visit to the wild. Be prepared to leave an environmental activist, as the wildlife experience is known to touch the deepest recesses of your mind.

The sheer majesty of elephants so aware of their power, the enormity of the forest and its ancient secrets, the unblinking gaur that dares you to try stare him down, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of a tiger or leopard, arrogance clearly written on their feline features: is a resounding lesson in learning to respect nature. Our guests are taken every evening to the jungle with a trained naturalist for company.

Bird-lovers will not suffer for company. With over two hundred species of birds including peafowl, hornbills, woodpeckers, the Crested Hawk Eagle, wagtails, blue jays, partridges, etc. one can spend hours trying to spot as many of these brightly hued winged creatures as possible.

The premises are filled with herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants. The garden, by itself, inspires the naturalist in you. If ever your curiosity gets ahead of your knowledge, our naturalists are at hand: they’ll clear any doubts you might have. End the day on a peaceful note, with the cicadas taking over the night shift from the birds: the perfect accompaniment to your campfire barbecue dinner.

Though Bandipur is around-the-year tourist destination, summers are the best time for wildlife sightings. March to May being the dry season, the animals come out of hiding and can be spotted by the watering holes. But for bird-watchers, the winter months are a better bet, for November to January, many migratory birds from the North, especially the Himalayas come down south to roost.

Bandipur: a surprise at every turn.

The jeep ground to a halt and the engine was killed, abruptly leaving us with the lush silence of the forest. An unseen flame-back called. And then we heard it – a branch broken, intermittent noises coming progressively closer, the thud of logs or stones being dislodged, and the crack of six-inch boles being snapped effortlessly.

The Monsoon and a Hundred Stories

ಚಂದ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಒಂದು ನೂರು ಕತೆಗಳು

“Can you hear that, madam?” Basavanna, our naturalist, turned around in his front seat and whispered. I strained my ears, not unlike the spotted deer we had seen some time back. The jungle seemed still, the cicadas having ceased their incessant song for the moment. I wondered what I should be hearing – a warning call, or perhaps some animal making its way

Beyond the Big Cats

There is a sense of excitement when one sets off on a safari: the nip in the air and the fragrance of a fresh forest waking up to the warm rays of the sun, all tingle the senses. What hidden treasures will the jungle reveal this time? This being our first visit to Bandipur National Park, the anticipation was even more! The jungle is an immersing experience of sights, sounds and smells; there is so much more to a forest than the big cats.

Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park, established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second-highest tiger population in India. These forests are contiguous with Nagarhole, Wayanad, and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, hence providing safe haven for a number of species – notably the Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger.

Once a private Hunting Reserve for the Maharajas of Mysore, this landscape is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve – one of India’s conservation success stories.

Bandipur has a variety of biomes including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The wide range of habitats helps support a diverse range of organisms. The park is flanked by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south..

About Bandipur national Park

The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.

The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

International Tiger Day aims to establish a worldwide framework for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

International Tiger Day, also known as Global Tiger Day, is celebrated on July 29 every year as a way to raise awareness about the conservation of magnificent but endangered big cats. The main objective of this day is to establish a worldwide framework for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

International Tiger Day 2024: History

The International Tiger Day was established in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia. The summit brought 13 tiger range nations to address the alarming revelation that 97 per cent of wild tigers had vanished since the beginning of the 20th century.

The nations came together to join Tx2, intending to double the tiger population from 3,200 to at least 6,000 tigers. This ambitious initiative aimed at addressing numerous challenges faced by tigers such as habitat loss, poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

International Tiger Day 2024: 10 Famous Tiger And Tigress Of India

  • Machli at Ranthambore National Park Named for having a fish-shaped mark on her cheek, Machli, also known as the Tigress Queen of Ranthambore has played a significant role in boosting the tiger population in India. She gave birth to 11 cubs between 1999 and 2006 raising Ranthambore’s tiger count from 15 to 50. In 2013, the government issued a commemorative postal cover and stamp to honour the tigress. Machli passed away in 2016 at the age of 19, the longest any tigress has ever lived in the wild.
  • Collarwali, Pench National Park Collarwali is the only tigress in the wild to have given birth to 29 cubs. She earned her name as the first tiger in Pench to be fitted with a radio collar. She is also known as Mataram (beloved mother) because of the many children she had.
  • Maya, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve Maya reigns as the supreme in Tadoba National Park, the oldest national park in Maharashtra. If you visit this reserve, safari guides and forest authorities often recount her clashes with other tigresses. Such battles also reflect the shrinking tiger habitat and survival struggles.
  • Paro, Corbett Tiger Reserve First sighted in Corbett around 2013-14, there was speculation that Paro was the daughter of a tigress known as Thandi Maa from Dhikala Chaur. Despite her petite size, she chased away two tiger matriarchs, establishing her rule over both sides of the Ramganga river.
  • Vijay, Delhi Zoo Vijay, the six-footer white tiger born in the Delhi Zoo, became well-known for attacking a 22-year-old intruder. He played a key role in the zoo’s successful breeding program as he sired 5 cubs with his mate Kalpana.
  • Munna, Kanha National Park Also known as the King of Kanha, Munna is famous for its distinctive stripes on his forehead. Though old now, his tales of territorial fights remain popular. His son, Chota Munna, is taking forward his legacy in Kanha.
  • Prince, Bandipur National Park Prince, a dominant male tiger, was the most photographed and dominating tiger of Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. In 2017, his body was found in the park’s Kundakere Range.
  • Waghdoh, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve Waghdoh in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve was named after a waterhole in the Mohurli region of Tadoba. He has claimed his territory by defeating another tiger named Yeda Anna. He was found dead in May 2022, shortly after reportedly killing a shepherd.
  • Kankati, Bandhavgarh National Park Kankati, also known as Vijaya, dominated the Chorbehra and Chakradhara regions up to the Bandhavgarh Fort. Her fierce battle with Lakshmi, a disabled tigress, left her with one eye. Her story is detailed by Shivang Mehta in his book, A Decade with Tigers: Supremacy, Solitude, Stripes.
  • Bamera, Bandhavgarh National Park Bamera, the largest tiger that the park had ever known, ousted his ailing father (B2) and became the dominant male of the Bandhavgarh National Park.

1. “For wildlife to thrive, it is important for ecosystems to thrive. This has been happening in India.”

On #InternationalTigerDay , greetings to wildlife lovers, especially those who are passionate about tiger conservation. 2. “Protection of wildlife is a universal issue.”

3. “Human empowerment is incomplete without a better environment. And so, the way ahead is in collectiveness instead of selectiveness. We need to take a broad-based and holistic look at environmental conservation.”

On International Tiger Day, I laud all those who are actively working to protect the tiger. It would make you proud that India has 52 tiger reserves covering over 75,000 sq. km. Innovative measures are being undertaken to involve local communities in tiger protection. pic.twitter.com/JlF8dQ3cxn — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 29, 2022
