New England Fall Foliage Tours

Your Guide to the Best Guided Trips for Leaf Peepers

trafalgar tour fall foliage

With leaf peepers descending on New England each autumn from all parts of the globe, it might be easier to leave the planning to someone else and enjoy a guided biking, hiking, walking, bus, train, cruise, or even an aerial tour of New England this fall. Even if you don't consider yourself the organized tour type, a group excursion might be your best bet for maximizing your time during New England's peak tourism season.

Tours range from day trips to full-week excursions where travelers are shuttled around across New England. Regardless of the tour duration, you'll be traveling with locals and fall foliage experts who can guarantee that you see some of the most scenic spots in the Northeast. Plus, once peak foliage arrives , New England fills with visitors and joining a tour keeps the stress level low.

Many organized tours have been cut back or canceled in 2020, so be sure to confirm with individual businesses that they are open this season. If you are unable to join a tour, you can always visit the best places in New England for fall foliage on your own.

Bus tours are one of the most popular ways to explore New England fall foliage. Leave the driving to an operator such as Caravan Tours , which offers an eight-day New England Fall Foliage guided motorcoach trip leaving from Boston on a variety of September and October departure dates. Sit back and enjoy vivid views of changing leaves in all six New England states as you visit the region's most iconic attraction.

Biking Tours

If you're passionate about biking and looking to head out on a "last hurrah" trek before autumn yields to blustery winter, a number of New England fall foliage biking tour providers will lead you on a self-powered journey to remember. Book yourself, for example, on one of VBT Bicycling Vacations ' scheduled outings this fall. This tour company offers a number of autumn trips in Vermont, Cape Cod, and Maine's Acadia National Park . Trip leaders provide support and encouragement all along the way, and your tour includes specially selected accommodations and great regional dining throughout your journey.

Train Tours

If chugging along the tree-lined tracks aboard a historic locomotive sounds appealing, then there are plenty of scenic options to choose from. Among the fall's best railroading adventures is the  Essex Steam Train & Riverboat excursion, which is like taking two trips in one. Board a historic steam train and travel through the rural Connecticut River Valley, followed by a journey through the local wetlands on a steamboat. The entire trip takes about two and a half hours and is available on weekends from September 26 until October 25, 2020.

In neighboring New Hampshire, the Conway Scenic Railroad is one of the most romantic trips in the entire Northeast. Different rides vary in time from 55 minutes to over six hours, depending on how long you want your journey to be. Most train rides also include live commentary about New Hampshire's history and local folklore to complement the autumn views outside the window.

Hiking and Walking Tours

Carl D. Walsh / Aurora Photos / Getty Images

The crunch of leaves beneath your feet adds to the charm of fall days in New England, so consider claiming a spot on one of the region's best guided hiking or walking tours. You can even get a head start on the new year by making a resolution to get fit this fall, starting with an inspiring stay at Jimmy LeSage's New Life Hiking Spa in Vermont's lush mountains near Killington. With walks and activities for all levels, from beginners to walkers seeking a challenge, LeSage's programs are designed for more than just weight loss. You'll retrain your mind in healthy ways, too.

The travel company Backroads leads hiking groups around the world, including one through the forests of Vermont and another within Acadia National Park in Maine. Group trips in 2020 have been reformatted and now include fewer people, so you can have a more intimate experience with nature while also staying safe.

Cruise New England's Waters in the Fall

A guided tour of New England's colorful coastline aboard a seaworthy vessel is sure to be a memorable outing, as is a riverboat trip as the leaves put on their annual show. Scenic tours from M/S Mount Washington are geared toward the best leaf-peeping opportunities, sailing around Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Boat trips are scheduled daily from mid-September until mid-October in 2020, and possibly longer depending on the duration of the foliage.

For a more immersive trip, the Maine Windjammer Association sails out on the Atlantic Coast for multi-day trips. You'll be able to travel along the scenic Maine coast and even further up into Canada, depending on which tour you choose and the number of days. Each day includes about six hours of sailing time, after which you'll drop anchor and be able to explore a local fishing village or uninhabited island in order to fully take in the scenery.

Best Aerial Tours for Adventurous Leaf Peepers

Alan Majchrowicz / Getty Images

It's one thing to pick up the prettiest fallen leaves that catch your eye, but you could also soar above the foliage, tickling the treetops. Several aerial adventures offer the chance to do exactly that. When you set sail on a fall hot air balloon flight with Above Reality Hot Air Balloon Rides , for example, you'll enjoy views few other leaf peepers will never experience. This tour company flies regularly from its home base in Essex Junction (near Burlington ), Vermont. All balloon cabins are reserved for private groups in 2020, making this one of the most thrilling ways to maintain social distance this fall.

Your guide to navigating the Kancamagus Highway during the busiest weeks of the year

Yes, there will be crowds. but the “kanc” offers stunning views and hidden gems, if you know where to look..

The Kancamagus Highway in peak foliage season.

I t’s 10 a.m. on a Saturday and a sign already sits in front of the Lincoln Woods Trailhead: Parking Lot Full. That doesn’t stop visitors from parking up to a quarter-mile away, along the shoulder of the Kancamagus Highway, and walking to the visitors center to buy the $5 pass that allows them to park at attractions along the famed road.

It’s the entry point for visitors journeying east on the Kancamagus — a portion of New Hampshire’s Route 112 — that’s known as much for its stunning views as the bumper-to-bumper traffic it sees when the foliage turns crimson. So a full parking lot is no surprise.

Except it’s July, the leaves are a lush green, and prime foliage season is months away.

I’m on a scouting mission to survey this well-traveled highway and unearth some local tips ahead of leaf-peeping season. And I’m already learning that autumn isn’t the only popular time to explore the Kancamagus.

If you’re hoping to join the hordes on this White Mountains highway this fall, it’s best to approach it the way one does a Taylor Swift concert. Expect lots of company, but recognize the reason everyone wants to come: It’s worth it.

Centuries ago, Native American tribes had these woods to themselves. Parts of the roadway, named for a leader of the Pennacook confederacy of tribes, date to the 1800s, but it was only fully paved during the 1960s. In the 1990s, the Kancamagus was designated a “National Scenic Byway” by the Federal Highway Administration.

Today, the Kanc, as locals call it, runs for about 34 miles, going from Lincoln in the west to Conway in the east. In between, it curves up and down mountains and along two rivers. There are no gas stations or stores, and cellphone service is limited. Instead, visitors stop at scenic overlooks, waterfalls, campgrounds, trailheads, and riverside picnic areas.

map visualization

Setting out on a full-day exploration, I begin in Apple’s App Store. Searching for “Kancamagus,” I find an audio tour and download its GPS driving guide for $14.99. The software uses geolocation to pinpoint where I am and provides recorded explanations of the history of nearby areas, and, as a bonus, helps keep my eyes off the GPS.

There are more than two dozen stops, so most visitors pick and choose. If you begin in Lincoln, you’ll soon encounter a series of overlooks all within 7 miles. Most of them look out or down on surrounding mountains, but my favorite is C.L. Graham Wangan Overlook, where much of the vista looks uphill at surrounding mountains — a different perspective.

Ninety minutes into the trip, I reach the Sabbaday Falls observation site, near the midpoint of the highway. Visitors walk one-third of a mile up a gentle trail before reaching wooden platforms that loop downstream, providing an optimal spot to photograph its 35-foot waterfall.

On the highway’s eastern half, the Swift River runs on the north side of the roadway. At Rocky Gorge, a rush of whitewater flows through a deep crease in the banks — and unlike most stops, the area can be reached via a paved path, making it unusually accessible. And at Lower Falls, the byway’s most popular stop, the river flows over and around a field of boulders before dropping into a wide swimming hole that’s packed with visitors during summer.

Come foliage season, these spots will have few visitors in swimsuits, but they’ll still be crowded. Which leads me to a major takeaway: Venture beyond the parking lots. “When someone says, ‘I made it across the Kanc in an hour, and I expected more,’ they didn’t get out and stop anywhere,” says Glenn A. Knoblock, author of New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway: A History and Guide.

People cross a bridge at Rocky Gorge.

For instance, if you continue walking beyond the footbridge at Rocky Gorge, you’ll encounter a serene view of Falls Pond. Continue up the trail at Sabbaday Falls, past the crowds on the wooden observation walkway, and you’ll experience a quieter, streamside walk.

At Lower Falls, where the parking lot has just 80 spots, I circle the lot three times, hoping to score a space. No dice. Frustrated and hungry, I drive east and then north, off of the Kancamagus and into North Conway, in search of a late lunch, promising to see the falls later.

If you’re lucky, you might see a moose while driving the Kancamagus. I didn’t, so I pay $45 to spend an evening with Pemi Valley Moose Tours (136 Main Street, Lincoln, 603-745-2744). The tours, offered through October 13 this season, are one of a variety of activities that can be done near the Kanc without encountering carloads of fellow visitors.

A sign warns drivers of moose.

At dusk, the company’s bus, loaded with tourists, heads north out of Lincoln. The guides, Larry and Eric, have led these tours since 1999, and identified a series of roadside locations (all north of the Kancamagus) where moose are attracted to salty runoff and marshy vegetation. They claim to see moose on 90 percent of tours, and the will-we-or-won’t-we creates drama during the early part of the evening.

By 9 p.m., the bus, outfitted with fixed and hand-held searchlights, is making repeated slow loops down a country lane. Soon, we spot our first moose — a mid-sized bull who stares into our spotlight for several seconds, then saunters back into the brush.

To pass time between moose sightings, Larry and Eric give joke-filled lectures on moose diets, habitats, and mating habits. They pass around antlers, a hoof, and a jaw bone. By the time we unload at 11:45 p.m., we’ve tallied three moose sightings.

Moose sightings are common near the Kancamagus.

The tour disembarks in the center of Lincoln, home to a range of lodging options. When it comes to accommodations, it’s imperative for leaf-peepers to make reservations early. “We tell people if they haven’t made their lodging arrangements, do it now,” says Charyl Reardon, president of the White Mountains Attractions Association. “I wouldn’t wait.”

In North Conway, I lunch at Barley & Salt Tap House and Kitchen (Settlers Green Streetside, 1699 White Mountain Highway, North Conway, 603-307-1037), which boasts 30-plus craft beers. The Thai coconut chicken tacos arrive piled high with fragrant thigh meat. For dinner in Lincoln, I take a bar seat at the crowded One Love Brewery (25 South Mountain Drive Lincoln, 603-745-7290) in the town’s center. One of the night’s specials — a rice bowl with grilled shrimp, beans, and avocado — seems healthy enough to allow a post-meal trip to the ice cream stand down the street.

I stop at Ice Cream Delights (73 Main Street, Lincoln, 603-745-6863), where, standing in the slow-moving line, a young man ahead of me asks if I’ve been here before. I haven’t. He replies: “Neither have I, but when I saw this line, I had to stop. When a place is this busy, it has to be good.” He’s onto something, not only about the ice cream, but the area as a whole.

A short drive away is Loon Mountain Resort (60 Loon Mountain Road, Lincoln, 603-745-8111), one of the state’s largest ski areas and home to a range of year-round activities. One afternoon, I ride the Gondola Skyride to Loon’s peak (starting at $29, runs through October 20) and enjoy a quick lunch in the Summit Cafe. (Many visitors carried coolers with them on the gondola and ate at picnic tables.) Then I climb an observation tower before reboarding the gondola to enjoy the expansive view on the ride down.

Gondolas at Loon Mountain Resort.

Back at Loon’s base, I head to the bike rental center. Loon boasts the largest downhill mountain bike park in the White Mountains. Rentals come in three varieties: downhill (starting at $119 per day), cross-country ($35), or electric bikes ($59). Downhill bikers must buy a lift ticket (starting at $27) and wear protective equipment (a full-face helmet is recommended). All the gear makes it seem risky, so I opt for a cross-country bike and pedal to the East Ridge Trails.

This terrain, much of it running alongside the Pemigewasset River, looks easy at first, but soon my quads are screaming. I push on, riding beyond the dirt trails through upscale condo developments and along the river west of Loon toward Lincoln, covering nearly 10 miles in two hours.

So how do you navigate the Kanc during its busiest weeks of the year?

Timing is everything, says Glenn Knoblock, who traversed the scenic byway at least 30 times while researching his book.

“I tell people, ‘Avoid Columbus Day weekend if you can,’” he advises. “If you can’t, realize that it’s going to be massively crowded.”

Knoblock adds that afternoons and weekends are the busiest. “If you’re an early riser, go at sunrise and you’ll see some glorious sights,” he suggests. “If you’re a night owl, and especially if you’re into astronomical photography, go up there at night. You just have to be a little more watchful for moose.”

Some of the Kanc’s sites receive lighter traffic than others. On the western side, the Otter Rocks area offers a place to picnic or hop on flat stones across the burbling Pemigewasset River. It’s not as wide or scenic as the always-mobbed Lower Falls area, but it shares similarities.

The Albany Covered Bridge.

Sites that require real effort to reach will be naturally less crowded. Sabbaday Falls are popular, in part, because of the easy walk from the parking lot. Contrast that with Champney Falls, which are twice as high as Sabbaday’s but require a 3.1-mile hike. That commitment keeps most casual day-trippers away.

Even the most popular areas have some hacks. On the eastern edge of the Kanc sits the Albany Covered Bridge, a wooden structure dating to 1858. It’s a fabulous spot for photos, but one of its underappreciated attributes is the large parking lot. If you park there, walk across the bridge, take a left, and follow a wide dirt path for about a mile, you’ll wind up at Lower Falls — without the hassles of trying to find parking.

When you find yourself in the inevitable crowds, however, take solace. Like a nightclub with long lines or a restaurant that books up months in advance, the masses are here for a reason. If you visit the Kancamagus in October, you need to be prepared to enjoy the ride.

The view from Graham Wangan Overlook on the Kancamagus Highway.

4 tips for getting the most out of the Kanc

  • It’s not just a fall destination: “If you haven’t seen the Kancamagus during all seasons of the year, you haven’t gotten the full experience,” says Glenn A. Knoblock, author of a Kancamagus book. “To see it during other times of the year is a different experience, and it’s equally stunning.”
  • Drive it both ways: A frequent newbie question is whether to drive it east to west or west to east. Knoblock’s standard response: Try it both ways. The views from the roadway will be 180 degrees different. He also recommends switching drivers for the return trip.
  • Don’t ignore Bear Notch Road : Most people drive the east-west Kancamagus, and fewer venture north on Bear Notch Road, a seasonal (closed in winter) roadway running north from near the midpoint of the Kanc up to Bartlett. “There are really nice pull-offs around Bear Notch Road, and the trees tend to be a little more dense there,” says Charyl Reardon of the White Mountains Attractions Association. “If you’re looking for those strong fall colors, that’s a beautiful ridge.”
  • Look beyond the Kanc: Reardon’s organization points to Route 112 west from Lincoln to Woodsville, Route 116 south from Franconia to Woodsville, and West Side Road from Bartlett to North Conway as less-traveled routes with great views. She also touts the White Mountain Trail, a 100-mile route that includes the Kanc but loops north to Franconia, Bretton Woods, and Bartlett. “There are definitely opportunities to enjoy foliage that go beyond the Kancamagus Highway . . . and tend to be a little quieter,” she says.

These Are 2024’s Top Spots For Fall Foliage Sightseeing

Travelers are already setting their sights on the best places to bask in beautiful fall foliage and transition into cooler weather.

Natasha Decker • Aug 22, 2024

Article Image

The summer has yet to end, but travelers are already setting their sights on the best places to bask in beautiful fall foliage and transition into cooler weather.

Priceline recently shared this year’s eight most popular fall foliage destinations based on search volume. Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was dubbed the online travel agency’s top destination for seeing the leaves change. Priceline suggested doing a driving tour on the county’s 12 covered bridges or going on the New Hope Railroad’s “fall foliage excursion train.” The latter is a two-hour ride with various train car classes. The antique railed vehicle leaves from New Hope, Pennsylvania’s Witch’s Hat Train Station, exuding fall vibes.

Bucks County’s website  notes  that the best time to go see its beautiful fall scenery is mid-October. One of the unique and exciting things to do in the number one destination is to see its fall foliage and views of the Delaware River via a hot air balloon ride. Another way to see expansive views of the county is from the top of Bowman’s Hill Tower, which you can hike.

Bucks County is a little over a two-hour car ride from New York City. Its stunning autumn scenery is about a one-hour, 20-minute drive from Philadelphia and four hours from Washington, D.C.

Where Else Was On Priceline’s List Of Eight Top Places For Fall Foliage Sightseeing?

Fall beauty sightseers shouldn’t fret if they’re not on the East Coast. Other places on Priceline’s roundup included idyllic fall foliage destinations nationwide. In fact, the list’s second most popularly searched destination is North Lake Tahoe, which spans the California and Nevada border. The top five fall foliage spots were rounded out consecutively by Bretton Woods, New Hampshire; Albany, New York; and the Payette River Scenic Byway in Idaho.

Stowe, Vermont, ranked sixth. Seventh place was Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. The last top destination on Priceline’s list was McKenzie River Scenic Byway in Oregon.

CREEK FARM Series -- Introduction to Fall Mushrooms and Mushroom Identification Walk

October 2 - Introduction to Fall Mushrooms and Mushroom Identification Walk

Join us for a presentation about fungal ecology and identification and then head out on a fun fungi foray on the Little Harbor Loop Trail! Learn how fungi grow and reproduce, and why they are important ecologically to humans, while also becoming familiar with mushroom families and species common to our area. Carrie Deegan , Reservation Stewardship & Engagement Director, is the presenter and tour guide.

October 9 - The Science of Fall Foliage; Walk to View Fall Foliage and Identify Trees

Come learn why fall foliage in New England is so stunning with this introduction to the science behind its physiology. We’ll discuss fall pigments as deciduous trees prepare for winter, the “ conifer advantage ” for trees that remain evergreen and how trees measure shorter days. We’ll walk the Little Harbor Loop Trail to identify tree species, see the progress in their fall foliage coloration, and learn about forest succession, natural history and utility as forest products. Dave Anderson , Senior Director of Education, will “walk” us through all of this!

October 16 - A Century of NH Forest Conservation

Come learn about early logging history, passage of the Weeks Act in 1911, creation of the White Mountain National Forest and the origins of the Society for the Protection of NH Forests. An optional walk along the 1.5 mile Little Harbor Trail will follow the presentation. Dave Anderson , Senior Director of Education, will be our teacher and guide. past

CREEK FARM SERIES - Learn about the history and ecology of the Forest Society’s Creek Farm property located at 400 Little Harbor Road in Portsmouth. Each week of this 4-week series will include a lecture or slide show at its Education Center followed by a walk around the campus.  Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and don’t forget bug spray! Since lectures are indoors, please no dogs.

September 25 - History of Creek Farm & Walking Tour

Matt Scaccia , Recreation & Community Relations Manager , starts this series with a slideshow introducing the recent history of Creek Farm. The Sagamore Creek area holds significant cultural and agricultural history dating back to when Indigenous people fished these waters. After Carey Cottage’s construction in 1888, and many cultural/history-making years later, the property was conveyed to the Forest Society in 2000. Following the slideshow, we’ll walk the property to see its historic features and scenic views.
