My first time walking through the little alleyways and picturesque Venetian canals, I was taken aback by the smell of delicious dishes and heard the clinking of wine glasses all around me.

This tour starts off right in the center of the city, and our guide was so warm and welcoming that I felt comfortable asking him any questions I had.

The small group setting was perfect for really learning and experiencing things authentically, rather than being herded around in a massive group without personalized attention.

Our first stop of the day was at one of Venices’s best cicchetti bars known for serving up this local kind of Italian “tapas” (small dishes made to be shared).

One of my favorite stops was at the 18th-century bar on Strada Nuova, which was cool based on the vibe and history alone, but their cod cicchetti and fantastic wine selection made it all the better.

After this, we had some time to digest as we crossed the Grand Canal on a charming passenger ferry at the famous Rialto Market! This was my first time on one of the iconic gondola boats and was such a wonderful way to experience the “highway” of Venice.

In Rialto, I got to see how locals come and gather their local produce before stopping at a little eatery run by young Venetians who have come up with some really interesting dishes that combine modern techniques with more traditional recipes.

These were just a couple of stops we made, and I was surprised at just how much we were able to see on this tour! I’d recommend it to anyone who just arrived to Venice for the first time!

It felt like something out of a fairytale, and I felt like a true VIP when we toured the 2 different wine estates with the owners/family, themselves!

At each location, we were taught about the history and production of Prosecco, beginning in the small town of the same name that was also given to the local castle where the wine was originally produced so many years ago!

We tried brut, extra-dry, dry, and rosè Prosecco, where we learned about the different grapes and processes behind each one as we tasted. We also learned about how to properly pair them and tried plenty of tasty snacks as we went.

Afterward, we filled up on some delicious lunch at the famous Osteria senz’Oste, which has equally delicious food as it does amazing views.

Upon meeting our guide, we instantly became friends and our small group tour setting was perfect for getting to know other travelers from all around the globe.

We strolled around the picturesque canals, making intermittent stops at quaint osterias and hidden enotecas to try a bunch of fantastic regional wines! We tried everything from crisp Pinot Grigios to bold Amarones, learning how to pair each with some tasty snacks.

Avoiding the tourist traps, we were enthralled in the legends and anecdotes our guide regaled to us from each neighborhood, seamlessly working the stories back to the foods and wines we were sampling.

It gave me a whole new perspective on Venice and the way locals live their lives, as well as how they choose wine! I’ll definitely use this information in the future, every time I’m going out to order wine or buying some from the store!

This next tour is a wonderful way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, out into the tranquil rolling hills of the Italian countryside.

The Processo – Wine Tour & Tasting – Full Day in the Prosecco Region  was such a relaxing time full of majestic views, postcard-perfect villages, and of course, plenty of wine! This tour brings you all the way to the province of Treviso, where we learned all about the wine production process, from top to bottom.

I will say that I feel the tour guides really do think of everything with this selection, starting with a convenient pickup right from our hotel!

The tour is conducted in a small-group setting, but the transport will take place in a private minivan or car, depending on the size of the group. It’s also a great way to see parts of Italy that I wouldn’t have been able to, otherwise!

Starting out at 9:00 am, this is a full-day tour that includes all transportation, and will still have you back before dinnertime.

Our guide surprised me with how much they knew about wine from this region, learning about the centuries-old tradition of winemaking that defines this part of Italy.

Upon arrival to our first stop at the first winery, I already had a nice amount of knowledge but this really took us deep into the Prosecco production process.

After trying some glasses of Prosecco Superiore DOCG, we then had a delicious local lunch consisting of various typical dishes made with fresh ingredients (my favorite was the salami and cheese).

After refueling, we then continued to the second wine tasting with amazing views and plenty of more wine tasting. Overall, this was an adventure that I’d recommend to anyone – even if you aren’t particularly into wine.

I found this to be one of the most smooth, nicely-sweet Prosecco I’d ever had, making it clear to me why it’s so well-reputed. I also learned what DOC and DOCG mean, what flavors to look for, and what circumstances help to create this flavor profile.

Following that up, we paid an interesting visit to the ancient mill of Vecchio Mulino della Croda, which was simply breathtaking!

This 17th-century piece of rural architecture is like traveling back in time, complete with a beautiful, green flowing stream and picturesque scenery that makes it feel like you’re stepping into a postcard. If you’re interested in experiencing a lesser-known area of the Veneto region, take the train about 40 minutes south to visit the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei area.

Venice Wine Tours: The History of Prosecco

Prosecco originated in the town of Prosecco in northeast Italy, using the prosecco grape.

However, the grape was renamed in the early 21st century to  glera , and laws were passed to protect the drink’s authenticity.

And invented at the end of the 19th century, the Charmat method traps the carbon bubbles from leaving the wine, the signature of the delicious, light, sparkling wine we know and love.  

Within the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions of Italy, only the provinces of Padova, Vicenza, Treviso , Venezia, Belluno, Pordenone, Udine, Gorizia, and Trieste have the privilege of producing Prosecco today. 

The highest quality Prosecco is given the DOCG (Vino Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) distinction, along with all other protected Italian wines.

Specifically, the highest quality Prosecco is produced between two towns, Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, within the Treviso province. 

Fun Fact:  Due to its importance for Prosecco wine, this area was established as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.

DOC (Vino Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is the next step down, but rest assured you aren’t sacrificing anything by drinking a DOC-deemed wine.

Everything from location and farming to the aging process and grape varietal is held to high standards at both levels.

Differences between Champagne and Prosecco

Similar to how Champagne can only come from the Champagne region in France, Prosecco is only authentic if it comes from one of nine provinces within the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions.

However, this is where the similarities between the two beverages end. Although they seemingly look the same, their path from the rolling vineyards to your glass is very different. 

Champagne is made with the Champagne method, where carbonization occurs in its bottles.

Prosecco is processed using the Charmat method, which uses steel tanks to trap carbon bubbles from escaping during the fermentation process.

The Best Venice Wine Tours to Try in 2024

Are you planning a trip to La Serenissima aka Venice? If you’re a wine lover, we have to tell you about an unmissable experience in the lagoon that we tried this month. Venice wine tours might not be the first thing that comes to mind – after all, they’re famous for the spritz – but wine has had an important place on the island for centuries.

In fact, it might surprise you to know that St Mark’s Square was full of vineyards until the 11th century! Keep reading to find out our favorite wine tours in Venice Italy and why we think you should join one. 

What is the story of winemaking in Venice?

On a recent food tour in Venice, we learned that once upon a time, all of the city’s ‘ campi ‘ or ‘ piazze ‘ aka (town squares) were full of fruit and vegetable gardens along with wine grapes. The wine grapes included varieties like Malvasia, Raboso, Tocai Friulano, Incrocio Manzoni, Refosco, Verduzzo Trevigiano, Pinot, Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay to name just a few.

The vineyards were nearly destroyed and indigenous grape varieties were nearly lost to history until a special project between the University of Padua and the Consorzio of Venetian Wines set up a project to try and reclaim them. The next time you get off the train at Venice’s Santa Lucia Station, wander to the vineyard of the convent of the Discalced Carmelites (Giardino dei cinque sensi). Squirrelled away within the Convent’s silent walls, they have replanted vines at risk of extinction!

What kind of wine do they make in Venice?

Did you know that Veneto (the region) has the highest number of native grapes in all of Italy? It is also Italy’s biggest producer of wine thanks to the glera grape used to make prosecco .

In times bygone, a classic Venetian wine was known as ‘ vin moro ‘ thanks to its dark color. It was tangy and astringent and popular to put on ships because it didn’t spoil. With a high alcohol content of 14%, it was designed to be drunk cold. Today we know this wine as ‘ Raboso ‘ or ‘ Friularo ‘ and it is grown in the lagoon and surrounding countryside. Some of the grapes still grown in the Lagoon today include:

• Verduzzo trevigiano

Our favorite Venice Wine Tour in 2024

This year we were thrilled to join a Venice vineyard tour and finally visit Venissa – one of our bucket list vineyards in the Venetian lagoon. Whilst not actually on Venice itself, this vineyard is just a boat ride away on the island ‘Mazzorbo’.

If you’re interested in wine even just casually, you will be so impressed with the tasting experience and storytelling here. Forget another boring visit to see the barrels – it is all about the history of wine on the island and told in a really engaging way.

Indigenous dorona grapes  were grown on the island for as long as at least the 13th century until 1966 when a massive high tide destroyed all of the vineyards and the grapes were sadly declared extinct. In 2001, the owner of Venissa (also a Michelin restaurant and small hotel) rediscovered the vines and embarked on an enormous project to replant the vineyard and get the grapes re-certified by Italy’s wine governing bodies.

Honestly, drinking the wine from Venissa was an unforgettable experience because we learned about just how difficult it is to grow and make wine in the lagoon. It’s essentially like growing a vineyard at the beach as the vines are surrounded by salty water and soil. There’s barely any room for the roots of the plants and the vines barely survive. You can imagine then what a small, boutique production this is!

We loved that the wine was essentially a piece of art and Venetian culture as the glass bottles are all made in Murano (famed for glass) and the labels are 24 carrot leaf gold handmade by the last goldsmith in Venice.

After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. This was a GREAT tour - we had a private boat to take us first to Vanessa winery on Burano and then explored Burano. Manuela brought us to see a lace demonstration as well. We then got back on the boat and went to Murano to see a glass blowing demonstration. Manuela was so friendly and knowledgeable. The group size was also perfect. This tour is the perfect introduction to Venice, giving you an overview of the city’s unrivalled history and a taster of its world-famous cuisine. Your adventure begins in the Cannaregio neighbourhood, one of the few remaining residential areas of Venice, known for being a popular after-work meeting spot for thirsty locals. We will take a gentle stroll around and chat about its 1,000-year history and your local guide will offer suggestions on other things to see and do during your stay. A ride in a traditional, stand-up traghetto gondola is next as we cross the Grand Canal the way the locals do. Once in Rialto, the food tasting can begin! We will try some fresh fish at a small eatery, owned by a group of young locals with a passion for experimenting with traditional recipes, giving them a modern twist. If you are a wine lover staying in Venice these are the best local wines you have to try, plus 4 incredible wineries you can reach in a delightful day trip my car or train. Cynthia Chaplin , my go-to wine expert on all things Italian wine, and I talked about the very best local wines to drink in Venice plus 4 wineries you can visit in an enchanting day trip. And one of them is right in the Venice Lagoon.

Best wine and winery right in the Venice Lagoon

If you're looking for a once in a lifetime wine experience then don't miss the Venissa winery right in the heart of the Venice Lagoon. Make a day of it: the winery is a special and unique place to visit with a fabulous Michelin star restaurant - Ristorante Venissa - AND accommodation.

Venissa is a Venice winery owned and run by the renowned Prosecco family, Bisol. Venissa is the heart and soul of the Venice Lagoon's Mazzorbo island right nearby colorful Burano island. This two hectare exquisite walled vineyard is a charming visit, complete with a 14th century bell tower.

It's not an inexpensive wine – a bottle of Venissa white wine runs about €120 to €150 a bottle, but you won't find it anywhere else in the world. Because the winery is so small they only produce about 3000 bottles per year. The bottles are a work of art themselves, hand-crafted in nearby Murano of Murano glass. This delightful white wine is made from the Dorona di Venezia grape, thought to have originally come from Greece a thousand years ago. The grape is hearty and resists the saline effect of the lagoon. It macerates 40 days on its skins and then matures in bottles for two years. This is a wine that ages very well. Look for peach, apricot and bergamot flavor tones. The wine has a gorgeous golden color as the grape name (Dorona) implies. On nearby Santa Cristina Island Bisol also makes a red wine, Venissa Rosso, but the true star is their white wine.

Enoteche & wine shops are the best places for fine local wines in Venice

You'll be hard put to find Venissa in most places in Venice but give some other local wins a try – Venissa's younger cousins in terms of depth and complexity: friulano, malvasia, ribolla gialla . These delicious wines are from the nearby Collio hills and are thoroughly enjoyable. Keep your eye out for local wines made with Incrocio Manzoni grapes ; grape varieties created by Professor Manzoni in the 1920s and 1930s by crossing and grafting vines. Here's a Manzoni Bianco I had at the fabulous restaurant, Vini da Gigio.

Head to some of the smaller enoteche away from the main drag and big squares. Look around the smaller canals and preferably near the water. In the smaller locales you'll have a richer wine experience and the owners and sommeliers are usually anxious to chat about local wines and make sure you have a glass of something special. A glass of wine in Venice is known as an ombra and the tasty assortment of appetizers on offer are cicchetti .

Venice restaurants and wines

Although enoteche and wine shops are the best places to explore local Venice wines there are some great restaurants to try. I have a few personal favorites. One is Ca' d'Oro in Canareggio. And at the top of my list is Vini da Gigio , especially because they have an extensive and amazing wine list. Not to mention incredible food like this risotto with shrimp.

I also love the food at Osteria da Alberto . When I was in Venice during Carnival this year every single dish we ordered we then ordered a second time because it was all so delicious!

A wineries day trip from Venice: the three best places to go

The Venica winery vineyards occupy a 40 hectare area in the Collio Hills. Each hill faces a different direction and has its own unique microclimate. Venica's cru wines are fabulous. Their Ronco della Cime cru vineyard produces Friulano, and at Ronco delle Mele they produce Sauvignon. Venica also produces wonderful pinot bianco wines. They also have a wine resort.

Head to the Prosecco Hills to visit these two fabulous wineries

The Bisol family (owner of the Venissa winery in the Venice Lagoon) has been a prolific producer of excellent well-curated Prosecco for 500 years. They have hundreds of acres in the Cartizze Hills, in Santo Stefano. In addition to Prosecco the Bisol family also produces metodo classico - Champagne style - wine. When you visit this winery plan on sampling some delicious food as well. Make sure you try their Jeio wine; sommelier Cynthia Chaplin says this is one of her favorites - a contemporary and joyful Prosecco. You can choose from the Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DCG Brut, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DCG Extra Dry, or the Jeio Prosecco Rosé Brut.

Villa Sandi is a slightly younger winery: they've been producing Prosecco for 400 years. This winery is owned and run by the Moretti family, more specifically by Giancarlo and his son and daughter. This is an ardently bio-diverse winery. In addition to Prosecco Villa Sandi also produces some metodo classico wine. This Villa Sandi wine, La Rossetta, won the coveted Gambero Rosso three glass award.

Food is also excellent at Villa Sandi. Cynthia Chaplin recently enjoyed a bubbles only meal hosted by Villa Sandi and held at Vittorio Emanuele in Piazza Bra, Verona. – quite unusual and a reflection on the flexibility of this estate's wines.

Prosecco and soave aren't the only wines that the Veneto region produces, there are many more besides those, and while they might not have the same global recognition, they're just as good on the palate, if not better.

There are multiple ways to go wine tasting in Venice. When you're looking for things to do at night in Venice , going on a wine tour or a Venice food tour with wine tasting included is a great way to pass the evening. The city also hosts several food and wine festivals throughout the year too, so they'll be something you won't want to miss if you're here at the right time.

You may be totally surprised with all the places you can go wine tasting in Venice. You don't need to go on a winery tour through a countryside full of rolling vineyards to go wine tasting, but it'll be a great experience if you do.

When you don't want to leave the city, then wine-related food tours, which include some of the city's culinary history, or walking tours that visit a historic winery are good options. Better still, do it the Venetian way by going to a bacaro, a small local bar, where they serve wine by the glass with tapas-style snacks. You can also head for one of the city's wineries, where there'll be a specialist on hand to tell you all about the denomination you're supping.

Whether you take a small group tour, prefer a private tour, or go it alone to a bacaro, you know you'll be sloshing back some of the best wines the Veneto region of northeast Italy offers.

The Best Bacaro In Venice

Bacaro are the lifeblood of Venetian hospitality. Folks drop in to these small bars for a quick glass of wine, a cicchetti, and a chat with friends. If you haven't been to a bacaro, then you haven't been to Venice. Never worry about the quality of wine you'll be served at a bacaro. When the locals are drinking it, you know it's good.

Cantina do Spade

The Cantina do Spade is a beautifully rustic taverna-style bar with an authentic Italian atmosphere. There's no mistaking what they do at the Cantina do Spade as there are two enormous wine barrels, empty of course, standing by the door.

Go in, and straightaway you'll spy the huge and very tempting, countertop display of cicchetti, small bite-size snacks, ready and waiting to be consumed. Here they serve a large variety of local wines by the glass and by the bottle for very reasonable prices.

Taverna Al Remer

When you want to drink wine al fresco at sunset on a terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, you need to be at the Taverna Al Remer. This taverna's interior is as attractive as its terrace and is finished with an old-world décor of bare brick arches and a beamed wooden ceiling. Here you'll be introduced to the wine list by the chef-owner who likes nothing better than to assist his customers with their wine tastings just to ensure they choose the right wine to go with his superb tuna carpaccio.

When you're sightseeing around the Rialto Bridge area of Venice and you fancy a quick sip, head straight for the Bar All'Arco. While this bacaro is in one of the main tourist areas, they only charge local prices which in itself is refreshing. This bar has more tables on the sidewalk than it does inside, where it's pretty much standing room only. The friendly bar and waiting staff are in the know about all the local wines they serve so don't be shy about testing their knowledge. Guaranteed they recommend a cicchetti of prawns and parma ham with a glass of chilled prosecco.

To get to the roots of the prosecco wine-producing industry will mean going outside of Venice and into the surrounding countryside. Most wine tours of this kind leave the city in the morning to head to the hills where the vines are growing. 

The main prosecco growing area is in the verdant valleys between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is around an hour's drive north of Venice.

If you're under the illusion that prosecco wine comes from the Italian town of the same name, you'd be wrong. While the wine is named after the town, it was actually first produced way back in the 1600s in the city of Trieste.

Trieste is a port city closer to the border with Slovenia than it is to Rome and Prosecco, a small town ten minutes drive north of Trieste. The reason that name was chosen for the wine is something that's disappeared in the mists of time, but fair play to the medieval winemakers as it was a good choice.

If you thought you'd be sipping prosecco wine for breakfast, think again, but you will have a glass in hand by lunchtime at the latest.

A tour of the vineyards is usually followed by a tour of the winery that processes the grapes you've seen growing. You'll get to taste several proseccos and be fed a light lunch of traditional Venetian food which, if you didn't have a decent breakfast, you'll definitely need or you'll be snoozing all the way back to Venice.

The Venice Food and Wine Festival is a major gastronomical event hosted by the luxury hotel chain JW Marriott once a year. If you're looking to partake in a sophisticated wine tasting, then this is the event for you.

The festival takes place at the resort on the Isola Delle Rose di Laguna , a tiny islet off the coast of Venice. It's an indulgence of wine tasting sponsored by the top producers of the Veneto region accompanied by Michelin star quality cuisine. It's not the most economical of events to attend, but one that's worth it if you can afford it.

Prosecco Festivals

Vino en villa.

The Vino en Villa is an annual celebration of prosecco held outside of Venice in the 14th century Castello di San Salvatore in May. It's an out-and-out homage to the prosecco produced in the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene region with no other wine on show.

Entry to the castle is free and so are the majority of events and workshops. You do need to purchase a ticket to be able to sample the wines, but it costs less than a couple of drinks in a bar and you can try as many proseccos as you can handle.

Even if you only have three days in Venice , you'll have time to slip in at least a couple of wine tasting sessions or visit two or three bacaro. Try to be adventurous and not stick to just prosecco as many of the other wines produced in the Veneto region, while you might not recognize the name, are seriously good. You never know; you just might give up on your addiction to Italian fizzy plonk and discover you have a connoisseur’s palate or nose for something with a more refined bouquet.

Prosecco Wine Tour from Venice

Meet your English speaking Prosecco wine expert Driver in Venice and start this relaxing experience in the countryside. During the journey the local guide will tell you everything about the wines and the Prosecco valley . Enter the Prosecco valley and reach the first traditional winery . Here, the winemaker will tell you about the story of the family-run production and, during a tasting session , you’ll discover the fresh and elegant flavors of this wine. To complete the experience, during the tasting, you’ll also enjoy a light lunch with typical and seasonal products of the area .

After taking some beautiful pictures of the hills and vineyards you will depart to see the second winery where you will meet the producer who will tell you about the Charmat method to create the Prosecco and learn about the history of this famous and fruity wine. Just as she was boarding her flight at Boston Logan International Airport headed for a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Mary DePetris excitedly checked the online fan group, Swiftie Nation.

Austrian authorities had discovered a terrorist plot targeting Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in the city, she read. On Wednesday, just before takeoff, organizers canceled all three shows. Ms. DePetris, 47, stepped onto the plane and broke the news to some of her fellow passengers.

“Half the plane was crying,” Ms. DePetris said. “It’s not just about the shows, it’s the community coming together and feeling safe at her concerts, and Swifties letting their guard down. And this just shifted all of that,” she said. “How can we do that now that we feel we are targeted?”

As the estimated 200,000 people who had been expected to worship at Ms. Swift’s proscenium in Vienna grappled with crushing disappointment, wasted money and a measure of fear at narrowly avoiding danger, a sea of fans flooded the baroque city looking for ways to shake it off.

They traded Eras merchandise in the shadow of the vacant stadium, or dissolved into tears when they caught the strains of Ms. Swift’s stanzas drifting from the doorways of sympathetic gift shops or churches. Some hung handmade friendship bracelets — a treasured Swiftie talisman inspired by a song lyric — on a tree on Corneliusgasse, a central Vienna thoroughfare whose name echoes the title of Ms. Swift’s song “Cornelia Street.” There, hundreds hugged, cried and commiserated in the middle of the road.

Tempering the dejection for many was a feeling that a missed concert was far from the worst outcome possible. On Thursday, Austrian authorities released information on the two teenagers they say planned to attack , outlining a picture of a terrorist assault designed to kill as many people as possible with machetes and explosives, plotted by the pair who had become radicalized by Islamic extremism on the internet.

One had recently started a job for a events service provider that was working at the Ernst Happel Stadium, where Ms. Swift was scheduled to play, according to Franz Ruf, a senior Austrian security official. The suspect, who the authorities did not name but said was 17 years old, was arrested there on Wednesday.

“I feel grateful to be alive,” said Charlotte Keller, 34, a human resources manager from Rome outside the stadium on Thursday.

Ewald Tatar, a manager at Barracuda Music, which organized the Austrian leg of the Eras Tour, said in a news conference that the decision to cancel the concerts was made together with Ms. Swift’s management, based on the information received from authorities.

“Although it was not an everyday decision, it was definitely the right one,” Mr. Tatar said, citing the fact that one of the suspects was an arena employee as a deciding factor. According to Barracuda’s website, all tickets would be automatically refunded within the next two weeks.

In an essay for Elle magazine from 2019 , Ms. Swift said her “biggest fear” was the potential for an attack on one of her concerts. “After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting, I was completely terrified to go on tour,” she wrote, referring to terrorist attacks at concerts in those cities in 2017 that killed a total of 82 people and wounded hundreds of others.

Ms. Swift wrote at the time that she worried about keeping “3 million fans safe over seven months,” during her Reputation Tour. Her Eras tour will be three times as long, with more than 150 shows over two years that one company estimated could generate $4.6 billion in North America alone.

Ms. Swift has not yet commented publicly on the situation.

Inside the 16th-century Lutheran City Church in Vienna on Thursday, a group of teenagers from the Czech Republic sat in a pew, inconsolable. A sign outside said, “Dear Swifties, we sympathize,” and Ms. Swift’s song “August” blasted through the sanctuary: “I can see us lost in the memory,” she sang. “August slipped away into a moment in time …”

The girls sang, too. And they sobbed.

“We came here carefree,” said one, Katherine Penkavova, 18. “And now we face danger,” she added. The girls leaned their heads down on the back of the pew. “At least we can sing our feelings here,” Ms. Penkavova said.

The city tried its best to dry the floods of tears.

Listings of palliative events popped up almost immediately. Vienna’s Albertina museum and municipal pools offered Swifties free entry, while Austria’s national railway offered refunds on unused train tickets. A dance party called “Shake It Off” invited fans to come dressed in their sparkly concert best. A restaurant offered free flutes of pink sparkling wine for every crushed concertgoer.

For some the concerts had meant more than a silly, good time, including Eliya Briand, 22, and her sister Naomi, 24, who arrived in Vienna on Thursday from Netanya, just north of Tel Aviv, seeking a reprieve from Israel’s war in Gaza. Now thousands of miles from home, the sisters felt they were facing the same fear.

“It has been a really, really difficult year, and this concert was sort of an escape from the reality at home,” Eliya said.

Her sister Naomi said they had come “from war, from terror — and now we meet it again.” She added, “For this concert to be canceled because of that specific reason, it hurts a lot more.”

Some, like Teng Yilin, 22, were making the most of the situation — while blinking back the occasional tear. Ms. Yilin flew in for a single day from Shanghai to live her dream of seeing Ms. Swift live. She arrived before dawn on Thursday and was scheduled to leave around midnight. She got the news about the cancellation on the plane, but didn’t believe it until she saw people crying when she landed.

Wandering Vienna lost in grief before dawn, Ms. Yilin and her boyfriend were taken in by a group of Swifties, some of whom had come from as far away as South Africa. They bought her beers, she said, and the bar owner played Taylor Swift songs.

“At the beginning, it was sad, but after a few hours we were laughing,” Ms. Yilin said. “I’m heartbroken,” she added. “But I think it was still a good night.”

It was still too early to assess the economic fallout from the canceled concerts. The Austrian Hotel Association offered its members legal guidelines to manage an expected influx of cancellations, but Oliver Schenk, a spokesman for the organization, said that he had received conflicting reports.

“It is not yet possible to say how high the financial loss is for the companies,” he said.

Outside the stadium on Thursday, there was no coveted Eras merchandise for sale. Vendors began to pack up tubs of uneaten wurst and untapped kegs of Austrian lager.

Stefan Schneider, 48, the owner of Arena Cocktail Catering, said he had spent 10,000 euros, about $11,000, on hotel rooms for 60 staff members he brought in from Germany for the three-day event, plus another 10,000 euros in cocktail ingredients. The event would have accounted for 30 percent of his yearly income, if all had gone well, he said. He added that he had no insurance.

“It’s a disaster,” Mr. Schneider said, but looming larger than that was his fear that other concerts could be under threat. “It’s a problem. You have thoughts, what about the next event? What about disaster after disaster?”

Next week, the singer’s global tour is scheduled to begin a run of five sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium, a 90,000-seat arena in London. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement that there was “nothing to indicate that the matters being investigated by the Austrian authorities will have an impact on upcoming events here in London.”

With all the tickets for the London gigs snapped up and further tour dates fixed through December, it was unlikely that the disappointed Swifties in Vienna would get to see the singer soon.

And without a concert to prep for, they flooded the city.

The Spanish Riding School tours appeared sold out on Thursday, and braceleted people queued for tickets to Schönbrunn Palace. Mozart and Taylor Swift songs competed for earspace across its winding streets. Alex Januschke, a waiter at Cafe Tirolerhof, said he had spent the afternoon managing tables of disconsolate fans.

“My advice?” he said. “See the city!”

Venetian Style Architecture Featured at Del Dotto Estate Winery & Caves in Napa Valley, CA

If you drive down Highway 29 in Napa Valley it is hard to miss the imposing stone and iron gates of Del Dotto Estate Winery, with the massive pottery amphorae flanking each side. But if you decide to turn in, there is an even more breathtaking structure at the end of the driveway – a Venetian-style palace that has been built into the hillside, complete with wine caves.

“When we researched our family history and discovered that it is Venetian and dates back to 1150, we decided to design a winery that honors our heritage,” stated Dave Del Dotto, co-owner and founder, during my recent visit to the estate.

Dave, a retired real estate and infomercial tycoon, and his wife, Yolanda, invited stone masons from Italy to construct the 16,000 square foot palace, complete with a marble exterior, fountains, statues, olive trees, and vineyards. Inside visitors are awestruck by the domed ceiling with massive chandeliers made with Murano glass, soaring arches, marble pillars, stone mosaics, and exquisite Venetian art. And echoing through the sound system is thrilling opera music.

“My Dad loves opera music, as you may guess,” said Desirée Del Dotto, Chief Operations Officer and Marketing Director for the winery, as well as the three other wineries the family owns ( Piazza Del Dotto Winery & Caves, Villa del Lago , and the original Del Dotto Historic Winery on Silverado Trail).

After several years of construction, Del Dotto Estate Winery & Caves opened its doors in 2007, and quickly became a showcase winery in Napa Valley, as well as a favorite place for the Kardashians to visit.

“We have welcomed and filmed with the Kardashians here on three different occasions, and it was an honor that Kylie Jenner selected us as her first winery to visit when she turned 21,” reported Desirée.

The Most Unique Wine Barrel Tasting in Napa Valley

Perhaps part of the reason that celebrities and thousands of other visitors are attracted to Del Dotto Estate Winery is the unique wine tasting experience they offer.

“We believe in allowing guests to taste not only the different grape varietals and appellations of Napa Valley , but also to experience the impact of different types of oak aging on wine,” explained Desirée as she and Dave escorted me into the ‘sacred caves.’

Oak wine barrels lined both sides of the very long cave, with intricately tiled floors and walls, and more massive chandeliers. Desirée used a wine thief to deftly extract red wine from a barrel, and poured it gracefully into our waiting wine glasses.

“This is cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley’s St. Helena AVA and is aged in French oak,” she explained. “Next we will try the same wine in American oak.” The difference is quite astounding, with the French oak providing delicate notes of honey and allspice, while the American oak enhanced the wine with broader swaths of crème brule, mocha and vanilla.

“We ask visitors which they prefer, and encourage them to ask questions, rather than lecturing to them about the wine,” explained Dave.

Desirée said that many visitors ask her what her favorite wine is and she responds that her opinion doesn’t matter. “Wine is like art, and you like what you like. It doesn’t matter what I or someone else like.”

Not to be out done, Dave chimed in. “Wine is like liquid art. It is like going to the Louvre, and if you were able to take down a painting or a statue and drink it – that would be the art.”

Altogether the Del Dotto’s make approximately 30 different variations and vintages of Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon in very small lots, with visitors allowed to taste directly from 5 to 8 barrels, as well as assorted bottled wine. Guests then select the barrels they prefer and the Del Dotto’s will bottle and ship the wine to them.

“Our biggest challenge is that we sell out of our wines very quickly with this tasting method,” admitted Desirée.

The ‘Beast’ and Other 100-Point Wines

Over the years the Del Dotto’s have managed to receive many high-scores from wine critics, especially Robert Parker, who awarded them three 100-point scores. One of these was for their 2012 vintage of ‘ The Beast ,’ which is a special red blend made from select vineyard rows.

“We named it ‘The Beast’ because the first time a good friend tasted it, he called it a ‘beast of a wine,’’ explained Dave.

The wine, which is sold in a special ‘caged box,’ is made in very limited quantities and usually sells out to wine club members almost immediately at the current price of $295 per bottle. It is a massive red blend with rich, concentrated flavors of cassis, black plum, graphite, cocoa and espresso beans, with a long complex finish.

Dave mentioned that ‘The Beast ’ is frequently resold on the secondary market in Asia to collectors, who have paid up to $1000 per bottle for it, “and have sent me videos of how they have taste-offs comparing it to Chateau LaTour.”

But Del Dotto Estate Winery doesn’t only focus on cabernet sauvignon, because they own a hilltop vineyard in the Sonoma Coast where they produce high-end pinot noir and chardonnay. They also make sauvignon blanc, syrah, cabernet franc, merlot, sangiovese, and several delicious sparkling wines. All together they own 108 vineyard acres, and produce around 20,000 cases of wine per year, which they primarily sell directly to consumers.

Visitors to the estate can make an advance reservation for a Bar Tasting for $75 per person or Cave Experience and Barrel Tasting for $120 per person. A good plan is to schedule a morning tasting at Del Dotto Estate Winery and then drive a few minutes down Highway 29 to visit their second winery, Piazza Del Dotto Winery & Caves . Here you can enjoy an oven-baked pizza on the terrace overlooking the organic garden. This winery features an even larger cave network dug back into the hillside, and an Italian inspired barn with turkeys, chickens and peacocks.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has announced the opening date for its new wing: Nov. 17. The $75-million NHM Commons, designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners with landscape architecture by Studio-MLA , adds exhibition space, a multipurpose theater and a glass-walled connection to Exposition Park outside.

The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana announced the acquisition of a new ndwango , or beaded artwork, by South African artist Zondlile Zondo . “Dressed for the Dance” follows an exhibition from last year, “Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence,” that showcased the glass-beaded panels that artists spend up to 10 months creating.

The SoCal punk scene of the ‘70s and ‘80s comes alive in the auction lots featuring the work of Raymond Pettibon , who created logos and other artwork for the likes of Black Flag , the Ramones , Meat Puppets , Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedys . On Aug. 22, Rago/Wright holds the auction “Raymond Pettibon: The Punk Years, Curated by Specific Object/David Platzker.” You can see the trove on sale at www.wright20.com.
