10 Bus lines in Buenos Aires to explore the city in depth

We explore the city of Buenos Aires by bus and choose the best lines to help you travel across it from end to end.

Buenos Aires (and its surroundings) is filled with countless places to explore. Often referred to as the Paris of South America, it boasts a unique blend of old and modern buildings. We invite you to play tourist in your own city for a day (or several). Let’s hop on the bus to experience and get to know it in depth.

We’ll visit historical sites and classic spots. You might know all, or almost all, of them, but perhaps you’ve never actually entered, or maybe you’ve just passed by. Sometimes, we take for granted how beautiful our city is and don’t take the time to enjoy it. That’s why, in this guide, we’ve selected things to do in nearly every neighborhood of the city, depending on where the different bus lines take you.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

1.  Line 130

Line 130

This bus takes you from Boulogne, in the northern part of Buenos Aires Province, to the neighborhood of La Boca in the Federal Capital. It mostly travels in a straight line and along the way, you’ll pass through the Vicente López area in Buenos Aires Province, crossing through the Belgrano neighborhood. If you take Branch A, you can enjoy the Palermo Woods. The route continues past the Faculty of Law, the Casa Rosada, Puerto Madero, and San Telmo, ending in La Boca.

If you enjoy a mix of nature and history, you can get off in Vicente López and visit the Municipal Ecological Reserve, which is fantastic. Even though you’re in the middle of the city, it feels like you’re in the countryside, as you only hear the sounds of animals. After exploring the reserve, hop back on the bus and head straight to the Casa Rosada. Get off at this historical site to take the guided tour. You can book it for free at the following link: visitas.casarosada.gob.ar.

Tip: The bus stops near River Plate Stadium, which is the perfect opportunity to explore the residential area surrounding the Monumental Stadium in Núñez. However, before planning your trip, make sure River Plate isn’t playing a home game, as the bus might get stuck in traffic, disrupting your visit.

2.  Line 64

Line 64

This bus route begins in the heart of Bajo Belgrano. Right there, you’ll find a piece of Chinatown, which started to develop in the 1980s when many Asian immigrant families settled in the area. The best way to start is by entering through the main arch located at Juramento and Arribeños. On both sides, you’ll see shops filled with typical oriental products, including food, decorations, and many manga and anime figures (Japanese comics and cartoons).

After exploring the area, which might take hours as it’s so interesting, hop back on the bus and head straight to La Boca to visit Caminito. This is one of the city’s most iconic spots; if you’ve never been, now’s the time. With its colorful tin houses, it’s often described as an “open-air museum” nearly 150 meters long.

Tip: The creator of Caminito was artist Benito Quinquela Martín, who described it as follows: “One day I had the idea of turning that vacant lot into a joyful street.” And he certainly achieved his goal…

3.  Line 67

Line 67

With this bus, you’ll pass just 100 meters from the Recoleta Cemetery, so we recommend getting off and exploring it. It’s worth a visit because this iconic site houses the tombs of many of Argentina’s most important figures. Plus, it has great architectural value: it reflects the era when the country was economically emerging, with families competing to build the most impressive and extravagant mausoleums.

After finishing the tour, hop back on the 67 and head to Avenida 9 de Julio, right where the Obelisk is. Maybe you’ve been there a thousand times (like on December 18th when we became World Cup champions), but have you ever seen it up close? There’s a door that leads to a viewing platform, but access is only allowed on special occasions, so you’ll have to wait for one of those. Don’t miss standing near the Obelisk to appreciate the city in all its glory.

Tip: Inside the Obelisk, there’s a staircase with 206 steps and seven landings. At the top, there’s a viewing platform with four windows and a lightning rod that can’t be seen from the street.

4.  Line 19

Line 19

Get off at Superí and La Pampa, walk a block, and enter one of the city’s most emblematic and picturesque streets: Avenida Melián. With cobblestone streets, grand residences, and an impressive canopy of trees, it’s unique. Between numbers 1800 and 2300, you’ll enjoy this “tunnel of trees” and feel like you’re in a movie.

You might also be interested in: 50 Best things to do in Buenos Aires

Afterward, we recommend hopping back on the bus and heading to Carlos Villate Street and Avenida Maipú in Olivos. We suggest taking a stroll there to visit the Quinta de Olivos. It’s probably a place you’ve heard about a thousand times, but never seen up close. Now’s your chance.

Tip: Built in 1854, the Quinta de Olivos was known as "the aviary" due to its large windows and resemblance to the dovecotes of that era.

5.  Line 41

Line 41

It starts in Villa Adelina, Buenos Aires Province, and one of the first sights from this bus is the Ader Tower, a historic building in Vicente López. Then, the bus heads into the city of Buenos Aires, where we recommend visiting the Ecopark, located where the old zoo was. Here, you’ll see many endangered native species, as the Ecopark aims to promote environmental education. In the middle of Palermo, you have almost 17 hectares with various attractions: guided tours, a water plaza, a carousel, and of course, many animals.

Another destination worth visiting with this bus is the National Library. Besides housing an immense collection of books, it’s one of the few buildings in the city with brutalist architecture, making it a must-see.

Tip: Renowned writer Jorge Luis Borges was the director of the National Library from 1955 to 1973.

6.  Line 152

Line 152

This line is ideal for getting to San Telmo and Puerto Madero without too many twists and turns. The San Telmo neighborhood is one of the city’s gems, with its cobblestone streets, low houses, and calm neighborhood vibe. On Sundays, it hosts the antique fair at Plaza Dorrego, which is a must-see.

With a completely different style, Puerto Madero is just a few blocks away. It’s one of the trendiest and youngest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. The best thing is to take a stroll, sit at a bar to enjoy the view, and, of course, cross the Woman’s Bridge. The area was built from original docks that were once part of Puerto Madero’s industrial zone, now repurposed as restaurants, the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA), and various shops.

Tip: If you love Mafalda and other iconic Argentine cartoons, you have to take a photo with all of them on Defensa Street, the oldest street in the city.

7.  Line 37

Line 37

It starts at Ciudad Universitaria campus, allowing you to witness the hustle and bustle of the thousands of students attending the University of Buenos Aires’ faculties of Architecture and Design, Exact Sciences, the Institute of Astronomy and Space Physics, and the Institute of Geochronology and Isotopic Geology.

With this bus, you can also enjoy the Costanera Norte. The Río de la Plata is right next to you as you travel peacefully, exploring the city. We recommend getting off at the Galileo Galilei Planetarium. While its surroundings are beautiful, we suggest going inside for the guided tour, which is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tip: If you like planes, this bus passes by Aeroparque, which serves domestic and international flights.

8.  Line 93

Line 93

If your goal is to explore Recoleta, this is the bus for you. In this neighborhood, you’ll find a tourist area near the cemetery, full of trendy bars and various attractions. There’s also the Recoleta Mall, with clothing stores. At the corner of Avenida Las Heras and Pueyrredón, you’ll find the Faculty of Engineering, a building with a Gothic style that no one would ever guess is a university.

You might also be interested in: Secret attractions, 10 hidden places in Buenos Aires to discover

Tip: A few steps away, there’s the Island, a small area within the Recoleta neighborhood characterized by passages with staircases and exclusive residences. This is where part of the city’s upper class lives.

9.  Line 39

Line 39

If you’re interested in seeing the iconic Teatro Colón, this is your bus. Due to its size, acoustics, and history, it’s considered one of the best opera houses in the world. The main hall seats 2,487 spectators, with a total capacity exceeding 3,000 when including standing areas. Guided tours are available every day.

After visiting, we recommend hopping back on the 39 and heading to the Mercado de las Pulgas. Get off at Avenida Córdoba and Arévalo and take a walk. In this wonderful warehouse, you’ll find all sorts of curiosities: artworks, vintage furniture, sculptures, clothing, jewelry, glassware, and thousands of other items. It’s open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:30 am to 6 pm.

Tip: We suggest dedicating plenty of time to the Mercado de las Pulgas because it’s huge and has everything.

10.  Line 105

Line 105

It takes you from Avenida de Mayo to Tecnópolis, non-stop. Well, to be honest, there are plenty of stops along the way, like Plaza de Mayo. You probably know it, but have you really visited and explored it? Or did you just walk past it? This time, we invite you to explore it in detail and enter the Cabildo of Buenos Aires. From Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm, the museum is free, and so are the guided tours!

After that, we suggest heading to Tecnópolis, a site of over 50 hectares with free entry, offering various exhibitions, interactive and playful experiences on art, science, and technology. From July to October every year, Tecnópolis launches a new edition with a specific theme, filled with new activities and experiences. The rest of the year, it’s closed to the general public as special events related to sports, science, culture, and more take place.

Tip: they’re still preparing the agenda for 2024. Let’s see what surprises they have in store for us this year.

Excelente servicio.

Read Your Way Through Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a literary city: Its residents like to boast about its many bookstores and independent publishers. Samanta Schweblin suggests which books and authors to start with.

  • Share full article

The illustration shows a woman in an oversized green button-down shirt and gold jewelry reading a book with a green cover on a street at night, in front of a large bookstore with well-lit windows.

By Samanta Schweblin and Translated by Megan McDowell

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

When I started traveling, I came to realize just how different Buenos Aires was from other literary cities. Maybe we all have similar thoughts about our hometowns, or maybe my revelation is just one more confirmation of the arrogance for which we porteños — people raised in the port city of Buenos Aires — are famous throughout the rest of Latin America.

But that arrogance is also what gives rise to our literature. Around here, we like to boast of being one of the cities with the greatest number of bookstores per capita in the world — and about how, even in the depths of an economic crisis, Argentina has more than 200 independent publishers. One of our great problems, we like to say, is having more people who want to write than people who read.

We grow up steeped in the idea of a city built by European immigrants yearning for the cultures of other continents. “Everything here is a kind of replica of some other place,” the writer Graciela Speranza once said. But the past of this land that was sacked and forsaken for generations now bubbles up all around us.

Maybe Buenos Aires does spend all day navel-gazing, but it’s not out of mere arrogance. It’s a city still trying to understand where it comes from, and what it means to have a past and a future — two fictions we are still hard at work on. Nervous and vital, our literature is constantly dusting itself off, and it doesn’t mind getting its hands a little dirty in the process.

What should I read on the plane?

In the time it takes to read a novel, you can read five stories. If you want to land with a certain big-picture understanding of the place, start with the shortest texts.

On the plane ride over, begin with “The Slaughter Yard,” by Esteban Echeverría, translated by Norman Thomas di Giovanni — one of the foundational works of Argentine literature. After the first nap, go straight to “The Aleph,” by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Anthony Bonner.

After the meal, pick up “ House Taken Over ,” by Julio Cortázar, translated by Paul Blackburn, followed by “White Glory,” by Sara Gallardo, translated by Jessica Sequeira. And 15 minutes before landing, read “ Early This Morning ,” by Pedro Mairal, translated by Kit Maude. This way, you’ll have the city’s layout (and a few escape routes) sketched by various voices.

What books can show me other facets of the city?

“ Optic Nerve , ” by María Gainza, translated by Thomas Bunstead, is a good guide for any visitor who wants to wander through neighborhoods and art museums while bumping into all kinds of ideas and cultural references. If you want to dip into different social strata, take a look at “ Ghosts ,” by César Aira, translated by Chris Andrews. Aira is one of the city’s most prolific writers, with over 100 publications to his name. Or tour one of the city’s most traditional high schools with a historical perspective on the 1980s in Martín Kohan’s “School for Patriots,” translated by Nick Caistor.

What writers are everyone talking about?

The phenomenal triad: Mariana Enriquez , Gabriela Cabezón Cámara and Selva Almada. Enriquez is Buenos Aires’s sorceress of horror. Cabezón Cámara has an admirable ability to renew prose and language. And Almada has a deferred and murky restraint that never fails to fascinate me.

In addition to being from the same generation (to which I belong as well), these writers are united by a furious drive to rethink history, and a brave determination to name what has been silenced.

Compelling things are also happening in Argentina’s most recent literature. Authors are recovering lost lexicons, recording new ways of speaking, traversing the most marginal social strata, thinking about new identities as well as new literary genres. The only problem with such divine ebullience is that sometimes decades can pass before it is translated.

If I have no time for day trips, what books could take me there instead?

Hebe Uhart’s travel pieces about the Argentine interior are small gems meant to be savored slowly. Many of them can be found in the anthology “ A Question of Belonging ,” translated by Anna Vilner.

Take an imaginary trip to the rural areas of Córdoba in Federico Falco’s magnificent story collection “A Perfect Cemetery, ” translated by Jennifer Croft. Or stick to the province’s capital city with Camila Sosa Villada ’s “Bad Girls,” translated by Kit Maude — a literary and poetic manifesto that talks frankly about the world of travestis , a term sometimes used in Latin America to describe people who were assigned male at birth but develop a female identity.

If you want to travel through time, turn to Antonio di Benedetto’s novel “Zama,” translated by Esther Allen, which is ideal for taking a deep dive into northern Argentina during the 17th century, in the midst of Spanish colonization. Top it off with the 2017 movie adaptation of the same name, directed by Lucrecia Martel — an atmospheric spectacle filled with landscapes from the past.

Incidentally, di Benedetto is also one of my favorite short story writers, and his collection “Nest in the Bones,” translated by Martina Broner, is an excellent place to start for English-speaking readers.

Sticking to the north, travel back a couple more centuries with “The Witness,” by Juan José Saer, translated by Margaret Jull Costa. Saer is considered one of the greatest Argentine authors, and he is still little known outside his country.

What’s a good place to curl up with a book?

Our botanical garden is small, but it’s an oasis where you can read peacefully right in the middle of the city. Buenos Aires has a strong cafe culture, and it’s not frowned upon to order just a cortado and sit reading for hours. But above all, visitors should be warned that Buenos Aires — even its literary parts — is nocturnal. On any given night, there are myriad book events and readings in houses, clubs, radio stations and bars where writers read what they’re working on to small but attentive audiences.

Any bookstore recommendations?

Walk around any neighborhood to find bookstores. The Ateneo, widely known as one of the world’s most beautiful bookshops , is the one you’ll find in most tourist guides. The Ávila Bookstore, founded in 1785, is the oldest in Buenos Aires. Eterna Cadencia, in the neighborhood of Palermo, is the kind of bookstore Argentine readers like most, with reading nooks, a unique curatorial vision and overflowing shelves.

Then there’s the famous Avenida Corrientes, where you’ll find six or seven blocks lined with used bookstores. They were once open 24 hours a day, just in case someone — perhaps after attending a play, followed by a long dinner with friends and a quick stop at the bar — urgently needed to buy a poetry book at 4:00 in the morning. Today, a majority of the shops are still open until midnight.

What audiobook would make for good company while I walk around?

If you’re interested in the world of artificial creations, digital consciousness and immortality, you will adore “The Invention of Morel,” by Adolfo Bioy Casares, translated by Ruth L.S. Sims. Inspiring series and movies such as “Lost” and “Solaris,” among others, it’s hard to believe the book came out more than 80 years ago. It’s a major nerve center of Argentine literature and a classic example of the endemic genre that we call “fantástico rioplatense,” or fantasy from the Rio de la Plata.

And if you speak a little Spanish, don’t miss Julio Cortázar’s voice on the album “Cortázar lee a Cortázar.” Back in the ’80s, as a teenager, I listened to that on my Walkman as I went out to discover Buenos Aires for myself.

About me, my name is Pablo. Lover of communication, especially if it is about something that I am passionate about, such as the city of Buenos Aires. Its history, politics, economy and culture; They always woke me up to the following question: Why does this city catch you so much, being so chaotic? My main concern about the tours is that you help me philosophize, to find an answer to understand the incomprehensible. Beyond the dates and some hero; My greatest interest is that you live an EXPERIENCE that makes you FEEL the city. I have a degree in International Commerce, Yoga teacher, Comparative Religions Travel Coordinator and Guide (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Spain, Turkey and other countries). I love dancing, teaching, laughing, taking care of my loved ones. I escape complaints, lethargy and not taking advantage of this opportunity to LIVE. See you soon and so I can also get to know you

Tour description

Are you ready to “walk” 500 years of Argentine history with its Truths, Legends and Fake News?

Be amazed by the exquisite buildings while discovering the events, secrets, myths and fake news that marked their history.

Far from the formality of a traditional tour, I invite you to interact, ask questions and share your impressions throughout this experience.

Let's have fun and discover a beautiful Buenos Aires with its lights, but also its shadows.

I look forward to seeing you together to celebrate the joy of being in Buenos Aires!

*Tours will be conducted with a minimum of 5 people. If the group is smaller, I will contact you directly to let you know and try to arrange another date. *Since I do the tour with small groups, with the aim of making it more participatory, and I pay a tourist fee, it is beneficial for me to do it from 10 dollars per person or its equivalent in pesos. I appreciate in advance that you take this into account when making the payment. Thank you very much !

----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- More tour description: What secrets lie within the walls of "La Reina del Plata"?

Join us on a fascinating journey to discover the life of the most European city in America.

From the times of viceroys and chieftains to caudillos, dictators and presidents, Buenos Aires has woven a history as rich as it is diverse.

This queen has given birth to great masters such as Favaloro, Borges, San Martín, Pope Francis, Quino (the genius behind Mafalda) and Messi. However, she has also known how to create chaos in her most splendid moments.

You will be transported walking through Madrid, Paris, the pure European and Rioplatense Neoclassical, the Art Nouveau and the Art Deco, where Pablo Neruda, García Lorca, Borges and Gabriela Mistral recited; where Gardel sang and stars like Sarita Montiel and Lola Flores danced.

In "random mode," we will explore the viceroyalties, the independence, its splendid architecture, the Nazism of Buenos Aires, the exquisite gastronomy, the waves of immigration, its religions, the fervor for soccer, the passion for tango, mate, the unmistakable Malbec, Evita and the descamisados, the mysterious gauchos and the role of Buenos Aires as the capital of the enormous breadbasket of the world.

We want you to understand the incomprehensibility of our “Cambalache”, to want to explore it further, and to take away valuable information about restaurants, neighborhoods, museums and shows.

We are waiting for you!
