Overall rating.

Fun crew that made it easy for everyone from 5 to 75. Only thing missing was information from the crew on the history and stories about Maui and the islands surrounding it.

Dolphins & Turtles

We had a surprise interaction with a pod of spinner dolphins. It was so unexpected but such a highlight to see them swimming in our wake.

Snorkeling made easy!

Molokini was beautiful. Turtle Town had murky water. Did not even stop but we spent extra time at Molokini. Got in some whale watching too and had two whales swim right up to the boat. Great staff, very helpful and co ... urteous.

When you want to have fun in the sun while gazing upon the beauty of paradise, sign up for the Calypso Molokini & Turtle Town Snorkel Tour. On each tour, you’ll set out from Wailuku on their triple-decker catamaran to all the top snorkeling spots around Maui. They offer fun for all ages, including the little ones, plus capture photo after photo for you to cherish.

Are you looking for an ultra-fun way to check out all the most beautiful sights in paradise? If so, you need to book your spot with Calypso Molokini & Turtle Town Snorkel Tour. They’ll take you to all the top snorkeling spots in Maui, giving you a chance to gaze in awe at all the ocean wonders beneath the surface. They also offer whale-watching excursions and sunset dinner cruises to remember.

All their tours depart from the dock on Maalaea Harbor bright and early in the morning and again in the afternoon. For their morning tours, you’ll need to arrive at 6:45 am for check-in, and then get onboard by 7:30 am. Afternoon excursions leave at 1:30 pm sharp. They take all their guests on the one-and-only triple-decker catamaran on the island. Excellent views abound as a result, plus they have a huge slide going from the top deck down to the water.

Once you get on board, their morning snorkeling and whale-watching tours start with breakfast favorites, including decadent pastries. In the afternoon, you’ll start out with lunch. Your captain will point out all the most impressive sights around as you zoom toward either Molokini or Turtle Town. If you prefer to check out the depths along the way, go down to the glass section in the boat to see beneath the surface.

Upon arriving at your target destination, you’ll get a chance to don your snorkeling gear – or your SNUBA gear if you upgrade – and get into the water. All along the way, the instructors will keep you well informed on how to use the gear and navigate through the waves. For the little ones, they have glass-bottomed floaties that let them stay perched above the surface while enjoying all the same views.

After snorkeling your heart out, you’ll have time to blast down the slides and even hop into the water from the second deck. Every tour features a skilled photographer who takes fun photos of all the action, which you can purchase after your trip. You’re also welcome to rent an underwater camera for your own use while snorkeling and swimming around.

Sign up to enjoy:

Snorkeling Tours Whether you head out to Molokini or Turtle Town, you’re in for amazing sights all around. You don’t even need to know how to use a snorkel or be a strong swimmer. The crew will give you the instructions you need to make the most of your trip – plus a noodle for a little extra support.

Dinner Cruise When you want to enjoy beautiful sunset views while on the water, go on a dinner cruise. You can enjoy the amazing sights from a table on the deck or chill out in one of the many enclaves instead. Delicious drinks and the food to match roll out all evening long to ensure you walk away fully satisfied.

Whale Watching Only available during the winter months, whale watching is a great way to see some of the most magnificent creatures in the ocean. The captain will take you to all the best spots for catching the whales in action. You might see them slapping the water with their tails and even breaching the surface time and time again.

Are you prone to getting seasick? Consider using an over-the-counter motion sickness remedy about an hour before boarding the boat. If that doesn’t work, the captain can provide ginger ale to sip on and direct you to the least rocky seat. Then, just set your sight on the horizon and focus on taking deep, even breaths until the nausea passes. Definitely do not go down in the cabin while feeling sick or it will just get worse.

Insider Tips: -Although you had to use the parking ticket machine in the past, there’s currently no fee for parking. -Kids under age three get to go on the tour for free alongside a paying adult. -Their rates change with the season, so check on what each ticket costs before booking your tour. -The water can feel cold at times, so pay the extra charge to rent a wetsuit if you’re chilly.

Keep in mind you may want to be in the shade. If not, get that sunscreen on and enjoy the views in the front areas.

As you ride the beautiful blue waters you will witness the awesome views of Mount Haleakala, the House of the Sun, to your left (port side). Straight ahead will be Molokini and beyond it, Kahoolawe Island. Behind you catch a glance of the West Maui Mountains. If you are on Maui between November and April, you should keep your eyes open for our seasonal residents, the Humpback Whales. A continental-style breakfast consisting of assorted pastries, and fruits will also be served during your ride, and a snorkeling lesson will also take place for those who have never snorkeled or would like a “refresher”.

Molokini was formed by volcanic eruptions, which formed the shape of a horseshoe. The underwater visibility is incredible and the water feels fairly warm. Molokini is a State Marinelife and Bird Conservation District boasting over 250 ocean species. Some of them are endemic to the Hawaii waters and found nowhere else on earth. While snorkeling, you will enjoy over 100 feet of visibility and get to explorer one of the world’s most popular snorkeling sites. Getting in and out of the water is a breeze, as Calypso offers very spacious and comfortable steps. The friendly crew will also be available to assist you with floatation devices and anything else you might need to have the best time snorkeling in Molokini Crater! When returning to the boat you can take a nice freshwater shower to wash out the saltwater in preparation for your ride to your second snorkeling spot.

Next stop: Turtle Town, a beautiful outer reef located near Maluaka Beach, in Makena. The area is secluded from the trade winds and is home to the Honu, or Hawaiian Sea Turtles, who are frequently spotted lining up for a free cleaning offered by reef tropical fish in the area. It’s also called “turtle carwash”! A deli-style lunch will be served during your Turtle Town stop. Once you are no longer returning to the water, you will have the opportunity to purchase a beer or mai-tai ($3 each) to sip and enjoy on your ride back to Maalaea Harbor.

On your ride back to the harbor, keep your eyes open for turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and of course, our famous Humpback whales (in season). Your tour should be back at Maalaea harbor before 1 pm.

Description

Calypso is a spacious, stable 65' foot powered catamaran custom built here in Hawaii to provide full-featured snorkeling and dinner cruises. With its three decks, all-table seating, and indoor/outdoor design, this vessel is a great choice for a Molokini and Turtle Town snorkel for those who are looking for a stable boating experience. The twin hull design of the catamaran allows it to cut through the waves while the center of the vessel is held above the surface. A smooth, fast ride is the result!

Whether you are a first-time snorkeler, or an experienced, strong swimmer, you can still snorkel with the Calypso. The crew will patiently instruct you in the use of their snorkel gear. When the vessel stops at a snorkel site getting in and out of the ocean is FAST ... the entire stern of the vessel transforms into stairways leading down to the water with ELEVEN lanes of snorkeling access. In addition to the essential mask, fins, and snorkel sets, the boat also offers prescription masks and comfortable flotation devices. You can also rent a wetsuit to help you keep warm, and rent an underwater camera to bring home shots of the amazing sea life you encounter! And if you have kids who are too young to snorkel or adults who just don't want to get in the ocean, the Calypso has a glass bottom viewing area below the lower deck that is open when the vessel is stopped!

Calypso has a two-location snorkel itinerary that departs from Maalaea Harbor at 7:30am and is 5 hours in length. On the vast majority of days the first destination is Molokini Crater and its crystal clear 100 foot visibility, and the second destination is Turtle Town, where you can snorkel and swim with Hawaiia's fascinating and friendly giant green sea turtles! Please note that while this is the normal itinerary on the vast majority of days, ocean conditions can vary and the captain will adjust destinations based upon the best ocean conditions for snorkeling that particular morning.

Calypso is the best-equipped, most fully-featured Molokini trip available. The list of amenities is long!

  • Hot breakfast served on the way to Molokini

Kevin at Falls

Let's begin by making it clear … there are MANY boats that do Molokini snorkel tours. There are lots of old icky boats, a host of mediocre trips, and then there are a few great ones and THEY are the ones you are reading about on this page. WE ONLY BOOK NICE MOLOKINI TRIPS!!! You can't go wrong with ANY of the boats listed on our Molokini tour pages. We don't book OLD boats that are poorly maintained … period. I have personally been on EVERY one of these boats and stand behind these tour operators. Now that you don't have to worry about us booking you on a BAD boat the only question left to settle is "Which boat is the very best for you?"

Calypso is the BEST of the BIGGER boats. Some people want the stability that comes with size. Others want all the features that come with a large boat (and this vessel has the most impressive list of those features). There are two things that make Calypso the BEST choice among the larger boats. 1. The seating is comfortable and EVERYONE gets a table at their seat so you can enjoy the food and beverages provided on the tour without having to balance plates on your lap! This is a big deal. It leads to a lot more of the food ending up in your mouth and a lot less ending up on the deck of the boat! haha

The second and REALLY important part is the number of lanes for access to the ocean to get in and out for snorkeling. The Calypso's ELEVEN lanes of stairs leading to the ocean is the best-designed access of all the Molokini boats. This cuts down on the length of time it takes to get into the water, which is a major complaint on some of the other larger Molokini boats!!!

Molokini as a snorkel destination is somewhat weather-dependent. While all tours that advertise Molokini as a destination will make every effort to provide guests with the Molokini experience, a few days a year mother nature is in charge and the tours get diverted to an alternate snorkel site. Ultimately the decision is up to the captain of the respective vessel and that decision is always made with the safety and comfort of the guests in mind.

Morning is typically a better time for snorkeling than the afternoon because the trade winds here in Hawaii are much lighter in the morning and the wind usually kicks up around noon or so. Many boats (and activity desks) advertise less expensive afternoon Molokini trips … we don't find this approach to be an honest one. Because of stronger trade winds, most afternoon trips go to "Coral Gardens" which is near the tunnel along the Pali Highway between Maalaea and Lahaina. Coral Gardens is a nice spot to snorkel … but it isn't Molokini. We do offer these afternoon trips, but we take the high road here at Adventuremaui.com … since your chances of going to Molokini in the afternoon are less than 10%, we prefer to market them as Coral Gardens snorkel tours … which occassionally get diverted to Molokini on really calm afternoons. If you want to be reasonably sure you are going to Molokini, you definitely want to book a morning trip when your chances of getting to Molokini are more like 95% instead of 10%.

Even if you’ve never snorkeled before, or are not a strong swimmer, you can still snorkel! The crew will patiently instruct you on how to use the snorkel gear. If you don’t want to snorkel or swim, the Calypso has a glass bottom in one section, so you can watch your friends and the fish. If you decide to join them later, reaching the water is simple. Wide staircases are lowered through the water’s surface. If you’d rather go express, the boat also has two water slides and a second deck jumping-off point.

After your Molokini afternoon snorkeling, Calypso will whisk you to Turtle Town – a second snorkeling spot. About Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is located between the islands of Maui and Kaho’olawe.  This beautiful site is not only home to several fish species, but many species of birds, as well!  The crater is a designated Marine Life Conservation District and bird preserve, so no fishing or climbing on the crater is allowed, but wearing flippers and a mask to watch the fish is perfectly wonderful.

The inner curve of the crater shelters a huge reef where the visibility is often more than 100 feet – perfect for snorkeling! Fish of all kinds will swim by, busily conducting their beautiful business. While you’re exploring, you may see parrotfish, black triggerfish, and longnose butterflyfish. An underwater photographer will be swimming in the mix too, capturing you and your friends/family discovering one of the coolest places on the planet!

The food was much better than I expected and our sons had a ton of fun at the Molokini Crater tour stop. There were turtles EVERYWHERE. We’ll be sure to come back and do it all over again when we come back to Maui!”

If you are looking for the most comfortable ride, with the best amenities and the most water time for the best price you have found it!!! The Calypso is a triple-decker, glass-bottom catamaran. The Calypso is 65 feet of pure awesomeness featuring:

  • 12 Entry and Exit points.  You will not stand in long lines getting into and out of the water at Molokini and Turtle Town.
  • Freshwater showers
  • Two water slides
  • A jump-off platform with over a ten-foot drop into the ocean
  • Three full-size comfortable restrooms
  • Maui’s only triple-decker catamaran
  • Abundant shade and room to spread out to get comfortable
  • Glass-bottom viewing windows
  • Shady cabin and upper deck
  • Individually boxed Continental Breakfast: Whole muffin, banana bread and assorted fruit.
  • Individually boxed Lunch: Turkey sandwich on Ciabatta bread, cole slaw, chips and a cookie.
  • Ice-cold sodas and juice
  • Professional, friendly, safety oriented, experienced captain and crew
  • Informative and historical narrative
  • Top-quality snorkel gear
  • Optional wetsuit and underwater digital camera rentals
  • Flotation devices
  • Easy stairways into and out of the water
  • Jumping-off point on the second deck
  • Plenty of Jimmy Buffet music

The back of the boat consists of multiple flights of stairs descending into the water, ten in all. This is such a huge improvement over their competitors. Most boats only have two points of entry which can cause a bottleneck. No more waiting for the fun. The wide stairs and railings descend beneath the surface making it a breeze to get in and out.  There are two jump off platforms if you are in a big hurry.

The Calypso snorkeling crew lays out an incredible breakfast spread for the boat ride from Maalaea Harbor out to Molokini. Most boats have pastries only. The Calypso does it right with a hearty breakfast with eggs, ham, cinnamon rolls, donuts, coffee, juice, and fresh fruit. This feast is perfect for getting your energy levels up for some Molokini snorkeling.

From mid-November to mid-April you can watch Humpback Whales.

On the way to Molokini Crater, the crew will come around with top quality snorkel gear and fins for everyone. They also offer snorkel instruction to new snorkelers and those wanting a bit of a refresher.

You will be stunned by the crystal clear blue water as you pull into Molokini Crater for over an hour of snorkeling. Molokini Crater is by far the best snorkel site in all of the Hawaiian Islands and has been a marine preserve conservation zone since the 1970’s. The water clarity is consistently a mind-boggling 150 feet.

At both snorkel sites, two crew members acting as lifeguards enter the water on kayaks to oversee the group and offer assistance . You will have over an hour to explore one of the top snorkel sites on earth in a safe and welcoming environment.

Your second snorkeling sight of the day is Turtle Town. Turtle Town is a stunning snorkeling site with vibrant coral reefs and abundant fish but the star of the show here is the huge friendly Hawaiian green sea turtles. These gentle giants have swum with thousands of visitors and are used to being treated like celebrities.

They know they’re not on the menu and that you’re not allowed to harass them so as long as you don’t splash around like a chicken you will get to enjoy close encounters with lots of these amazing ancient creatures.

While at Turtle Town the crew serves you a mouth-watering BBQ lunch with vegetarian options included in your ticket price. Soft drinks and water are available for free throughout the day. Mai tais, rum and cokes, and beer and wine are available for purchase aboard the boat. The mai tais go down very nice after a few hours of snorkeling.

On the way back in the captain takes you by LaPerouse Bay to check for spinner dolphins.  You will get to encounter a remote and barren part of Maui formed by our most recent lava flow some 200 years ago. The crew serves chocolate chip cookies and adult beverages on the ride back in.

All snorkel spots are visited weather permitting.

I’ve been booking Maui activities since 2001 and I hear the same thing time and time again, “Our family will remember this trip for the rest of our lives. It was the absolute highlight of our Maui vacation”.  -Mark Noble – Owner of Auntie Snorkel

Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise in maui .

This stable, comfortable, triple-deck catamaran leaves from centrally-located Ma’alaea Harbor. Come aboard this relaxing two-hour excursion, which gives you time to enjoy a delicious meal, explore the incredible craft, listen to great island-style music, and watch the sun go down from your place on top of the waves! Seating on the Calypso sunset dinner cruise in Maui comfortably accommodates any size group, including couples, families, and even large corporate events. You’ll find tables for two, four, eight, and ten, as well as enclaves throughout the vessel to sit and sip drinks, see the ocean from a new perspective, or hang with the kids when they need to fidget.

Explore all three decks, and take your time to find just the right spot in sun or shade. Calypso’s three restrooms are on the lowest deck. The front of the boat is the most open to sun and wind, so wear a secure hat and, as one of our lighthearted guests advised, “consider leaving your fake eyelashes on shore”! After you’ve settled in, pick up a fizzy soda, tropical juice or island themed adult beverage. Your Calypso sunset dinner cruise includes two free drinks, and once the catamaran has motored out of the harbor, you can order alcohol. Friendly crew members tend the bar, and they can bring you Mai-Tais, wine, and beer.

When it’s time for the delicious main meal enjoy  juicy prime rib. Mahi mahi, teriyaki chicken, steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes, and chocolate cake is also ready for you to eat. While you chow down, the crew comes by often to take things out of your way, ensuring that no trash ends up in the ocean. There is plenty of time to gaze at the islands of Kaho’olawe and Lana’i in the distance – not to mention the epic snorkeling site, Molokini Crater. Closer to the boat, you’ll see the Kahalawai Mountains of west Maui as they stretch toward the sky. When humpback whales are visiting the islands from Alaska, chances are excellent that you will see some of the magnificent marine mammals on your Calypso dinner cruise! Any time you do, the captain and crew are sure to get on the mic for some whale conversation. You and your group will love this fun time on the sea, so follow the sun, love your loved ones, and have a great meal on the Calypso dinner cruise!

Reggae star Maxi Priest heading back to Maui

calypso tour maui

British reggae legend Maxi Priest is heading back to Maui to perform at Da Playground on Aug. 24. Nominated three times for a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album, he is one of only two British reggae acts, along with UB40, to have an American number one with “Close to You.”

Employing Jamaican rhythms as a foundation, he applied his rich voice to an appealing blend of R&B and pop, creating a refined style of contemporary reggae which he characterized as “bright, fresh, positive and uplifting.”

Born near London, Priest first became involved with music through his profession as a carpenter, building sound systems for various reggae bands and singers. He changed his original surname from Elliot to Priest after discovering Rastafarianism, taking his name from Priest Levi, a figurehead of the 12 tribes of Israel.

“First and foremost, I’m from a church background,” he has explained. “My mother, a missionary, is where I would hear the beautiful sound of gospel, mixed in with reggae music that my older brothers played around the house. My sisters were into the Jackson Five, The Beatles, Al Green. I listened to all kinds of vocalists, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, and Dennis Brown. Without realizing it, I was developing my craft. I was taught never to limit myself. That’s why you’ll always find different styles of music on my albums.”

Hitting the British charts in 1985, the versatile artist gained international attention a couple of years later with his cover of Cat Steven’s “Wild World.” His duet with Roberta Flack in 1991, “Set the Night to Music” was a Top Ten hit.

Over the years, he’s also worked with such reggae stars as Sly and Robbie, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Shabba Ranks, and with UB40 and the catchy single “Dance Until the Morning Light.”

His 2019 album “It All Comes Back to Love,” was nominated for the reggae Grammy. He subsequently teamed with guitar legend Robin Trower and fellow British musician Livingstone Brown for “United State of Mind.”

“What better time than now for a united state of mind in addressing some of the injustices occurring around the world like racism,” he told Songfacts. “I don’t think we could have thought of a better inspiration to carry us through in the time we are living in. This was music from the heart as a gift to the world. We are still fighting the fight and that with a united state of mind we can overcome.”

On a 2024 three-island tour, Maxi Priest also plays Honolulu on Aug. 22 and 23, and Kauai on Aug. 25. Show at 8 p.m., doors open at 7. Tickets are $40 in advance from www.daplaygroundmaui.com, and $50 at the door.

ABC Updates

Watch "maui rising: the fight for hawai'i's future" friday on abc.

ABC News Studios announced  "MAUI RISING: The Fight for Hawai'i's Future," a one-hour primetime special marking a year since the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history tore through the picturesque town of Lahaina, Maui, leaving a community reeling and inspiring a new generation of organizers ready to stand up for change. Narrated by actor and Hawai'i resident Jason Scott Lee , the program highlights the strength, determination and resilience of the people of Lahaina and follows Native Hawaiian community leaders who see the tragedy as an opportunity to re-envision a new town based on ecological restoration, cultural repair, and ultimately a chance to build a stronger, more equitable and more sustainable future for all of Hawai'i. On Thursday, Aug. 8 , ABC News' reporting initiative "Maui Strong 808," which has been dedicated to chronicling the impact of the crisis and relief efforts, will highlight its yearlong commitment with coverage across programs and platforms, culminating with ABC News Studios' "MAUI RISING: The Fight for Hawai'i's Future," airing Friday, Aug. 9 , at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC, streaming the next day on Hulu . Be sure to watch on the  ABC app  from your smartphone and tablet ( iOS  and  Android ), computer on  ABC.com  and connected devices (Roku, AppleTV and  Amazon Fire TV ).

WATCH THE LIVESTREAM HERE

"MAUI RISING: The Fight for Hawai'i's Future" spotlights Lahaina leaders who see the catastrophic fire as a pivot point and opportunity to rectify long-standing issues around affordable housing, the tourism-based economy, water rights and resource exploitation. Interviews include legendary Hawaiian surfer Archie Kalepa; Hawaiian cultural practitioner Ke'eaumoku Kapu; key organizers of the grassroots community group Lahaina Strong, Pā'ele Kiakona, Courtney Lazo and Jordan Ruidas; "American Idol" winner and Hawaiian-born singer Iam Tongi and more.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, ABC News' "Maui Strong 808" coverage on network programs and platforms includes the following:

"Good Morning America" will explore the progress made one year after the fires devastated Maui, examining both the advancements in rebuilding and the ongoing challenges. ABC News correspondent and Maui-born Becky Worley will speak with officials, homeowners and communities that lost everything, providing an in-depth look at the efforts to recover and heal.

ABC News Live will debut a new, 30-minute special that will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Maui fires and explore the theme of "kuleana," the Hawaiian word for responsibility and one's contribution to the community. Worley reports from Maui on the progress that's been made on the island since the tragedy, how the community continues to heal, and the changes that have been made to prevent another fire disaster on the island. The streaming special will include an exclusive aerial tour inside the impacted zone and feature interviews with Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, Hawai'i State Rep. Elle Cochran, Maui wildfire survivors and more. "Maui Strong 808: Rising from the Ashes" begins streaming on Aug. 8 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on ABC News Live .

ABC News Digital will host an immersive page on ABCNews.com , looking back at the calamity in Maui and detailing the milestones of recovery in the year since to mark the anniversary. The digital hub will house "Maui Strong 808" content from across ABC News programs and platforms, including articles, video segments, interviews, special projects and more.

ABC Audio will share an audio-only version of " MAUI RISING: The Fight for Hawai'i's Future" on Saturday, Aug. 10, and ABC News' daily flagship podcast " Start Here " will include coverage of the special and reporting on the ongoing efforts in Maui as part of the program that week.

"World News Tonight with David Muir," "Nightline" and "GMA3: What You Need to Know" will include additional coverage of the anniversary of the Maui fires.

"MAUI RISING: The Fight for Hawai'i's Future" is produced by ABC News Studios and is part of ABC News' "Soul of a Nation" portfolio, dedicated to inclusive storytelling. Melia Patria is executive producer, Monica DelaRosa is senior producer, and Stephanie Maurice is executive editorial producer. Mike Kelley is head of ABC News Studios.
