Pakistan name 15-member T20 World Cup squad

Pakistan, the runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament, have named their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Babar Azam will lead a strong side after he was reinstated as their white-ball captain earlier this year.

In a boost for Pakistan, pacer Haris Rauf was included in the squad after he recovered from an injury, having last featured for the side in January.

“This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience," the PCB said in its statement. "These players have been playing together for some time and look well-prepared and settled for next month’s event.

“This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event.

“Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup.”

Following their 2-0 clean sweep of Pakistan, Bangladesh have jumped to the fourth spot on the ICC World Test Championship points table.

Bangladesh are basking in the glory if their historic Test series triumph over Pakistan after they completed a 2-0 clean sweep in Rawalpindi on Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to their excellent show in Pakistan, Bangladesh have made massive gains in the ICC World Test Championship points table climbing up to the top-half of the standings.

In the first two cycles of the World Test Championship, Bangladesh managed just one out of 19 Tests they played. However, in the ongoing WTC cycle, they have already claimed three wins in six attempts. And with that, they have zoomed to the fourth spot on the table.

On the other hand, Pakistan have dropped to the eighth spot after their fifth defeat in seven matches in the ongoing WTC cycle. Incidentally, it was Bangladesh that started were at the penultimate spot on the nine-team table when their two-Test tour of Pakistan got underway last month but by the end of it, they’ve made a giant leap.

So far, Bangladesh have three wins and as many defeats from six Test. Pakistan have played seven Tests of which they have won just two and lost the remaining.

What’s next for Bangladesh?

Bangladesh will now travel to table-toppers India for a two-Test series and then fly to the Caribbean for two more Tests. They will then welcome South Africa for a two-match Test series at home to complete their cycle.

What’s next for Pakistan?

Pakistan will next be hosting England for three Tests which will lead to a tour of South Africa for two Tests before they return home to greet West Indies next year for two Tests.

Top-two Teams in WTC Final Race

India, the two-time WTC runners-up, currently lead the table with six wins, two defeats and a draw from their nine matches (PCT of 68.52) and are followed by title holders Australia who have eight wins, three defeats and a draw from their 12 games so far (PCT of 62.50).

The second Test of the Bangladesh tour of Pakistan will be a series decider, as Pakistan looks to bounce back from a disappointing loss in the first Test. The match will take place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, a venue known for its high-scoring batting pitches.

Pakistan will be keen to rectify the mistakes made in the first Test, where they dominated for much of the match but ultimately lost by an unsatisfying margin. The batting lineup will need to be more consistent and convert starts into big scores. The bowling unit, led by Naseem Shah , will also need to step up and deliver crucial breakthroughs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be looking to build on their impressive performance in the first Test. The batting has been in good form, and the bowling attack has shown its ability to take wickets. If Bangladesh can maintain their momentum, they will be a tough team to beat.

Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan, 2nd Test:

  • Start Date:  Aug 30, 10:30 am (IST), 5:00 am (GMT), 10:00 am (LOCAL)
  • Venue:  Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium Pitch Report:

The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is renowned for its flat pitches that often favor batting. Given the recent trend of producing high-scoring matches in Pakistan, it’s likely that the pitch for this Test will be similar.

Key Features:

  • Flat surface: The pitch is expected to offer little assistance to the bowlers, making it challenging for them to extract bounce or turn.
  • Minimal movement: The ball is unlikely to swing or seam significantly, making it difficult for bowlers to generate significant movement.
  • High-scoring potential: The flat nature of the pitch is likely to result in high-scoring matches.

Challenges for Bowlers:

  • Lack of assistance: Bowlers will need to rely heavily on their skill and accuracy to dismiss batsmen.
  • Patience required: It will be crucial for bowlers to maintain patience and avoid losing their line and length.
  • Reverse swing potential: As the match progresses, bowlers might be able to exploit reverse swing if they can maintain a consistent line and length.

Overall, the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium pitch is expected to favor batting and provide a challenging environment for bowlers. Teams will need to adapt to the conditions and find ways to break through the opposition’s batting lineup.

PAK vs BAN Dream11 Prediction Picks:

  • Wicketkeepers : Litton Das, Mohammad Rizwan
  • Batters: Mushfiqur Rahim , Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel
  • All-rounders: Shakib Al Hasan, Saim Ayub, Mehidy Hasan Miraz
  • Bowlers: Taijul Islam, , Naseem Shah, Shoriful Islam

Najmul Hossain Shanto hailed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for his impressive performance in the Pakistan test series.

It was a historic day for Bangladesh cricket as the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side registered a stunning test series win over the Pakistan cricket team in Rawalpindi on September 3.

The visitors crushed hosts Pakistan by six wickets in the second test in Rawalpindi to win their first ever test series over the Asian giants.

Earlier in the match, Pakistan made 274 in the first innings with skipper Shan Masood and Agha Salman scoring crucial half-centuries. For Bangladesh, spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked five wickets.

In reply, Bangaldesh were struggling at 26/6 at one stage, but wicket-keeper batter Liton Das (138) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) helped the visitors reach 262 runs.

In Pakistan’s second innings, Bangladesh bundled out the hosts for 172 runs, setting themselves a target of 185 runs to win their first ever test series against Pakistan.

While chasing, Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan played with positive intent and scored 40 runs, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque also chipped in with the bat as they won the game by six wickets and registered their first ever test series win over Pakistan.

This win gives us a lot of confidence: Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto

After thrashing Pakistan at their home, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said that this series victory will boost his team’s confidence for the upcoming India tour later this month.

Shanto further added that veteran players Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan will play a huge role for Bangladesh during the India tour.

“Next series is very important and this win gives us a lot of confidence. We have a lot of experience in Mushi and Shakib, and they will be important in India . The way he bowled and took 5 wickets in these conditions is very impressive, and hope he can do the same against India,” Shanto said in the post-match presentation.

With a 2-0 test series victory over Pakistan, the Shanto-led side jumped to fourth place in the latest ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings. Pakistan, on the other hand, are placed eighth with their half of their cycle done and dusted.

Bangladesh fall back on proven mantra enroute to historic Test win

pakistan next tour cricket team

Bangladeshi spinners have been successful in the ongoing Test series against Pakistan by following the blueprint of their last Sri Lanka tour in 2021, according to Sohel Islam, former spin bowling coach of Bangladesh.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib al Hasan shared seven wickets between them, on the fifth day, in the two-match Test series opener against Pakistan at Rawalpindi, to help the tourists earn their maiden Test win against their Asian neighbours.

Bangladeshi spinners have always been a force to reckon with at their own den with slow and low wickets at home. But, that has hardly been the case when they played abroad, where the wickets are relatively more suitable for the batters with even bounce and turn.

The spinners of the touring side were often left puzzled, after not prizing out wickets within their first couple of overs, being habituated to get on top of the opposing batters sooner rather than later, and it turned out to be the same case when they travelled to Sri Lanka in 2021.

Sohel Islam, who is currently the head coach of Bangladesh Tigers programme - an initiative taken by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to keep players ready for the national team, was travelling with the touring squad as the spin coach and at that point they decided to focus on remaining patient more than anything else.

According to the spin guru of the country , all the leading spin bowlers under his charge, followed the template in Pakistan that they designed during the Sri Lanka tour.

"I think the spinners are bowling with a different mind-set now when they are playing abroad compared to how we bowled before in foreign conditions and now you will notice that our spinners can bowl for extended periods even when the pitch doesn't offer much support," said Sohel on Wednesday.

"When we last toured Sri Lanka (2021), I was the spin bowling coach. As you know, their wickets aren't very spin-friendly.

"If you play regularly on pitches that are suitable for a spinner which is the case in our country, you'll naturally adopt an aggressive mindset considering you are picking a wicket by bowling five to seven overs," he said.

"In the past, when we took that aggressive mindset abroad-whether it was South Africa, Australia, or Sri Lanka, we would often become mentally unsettled after bowling five to six overs without taking a wicket and get puzzled, suddenly a sense of urgency grows as we start questioning ourselves why the wickets weren't coming," he continued.

"During that series (against Sri Lanka) we had to shift away from that aggressive mindset and we decided that even if we didn't get any wickets we would keep bowling throughout the day in the right areas without trying to force anything.

"Look at the last Test (against Pakistan), you saw that in the first innings when the pitch wasn't offering much assistance, we focused on maintaining accuracy rather than rushing," he said.

"Despite the intense heat we knew that by the fourth or fifth day the pitch would begin to crack and opportunities would arise. The key is to be patient and wait for the game to turn in your favour. As a spin bowling unit, you need to wait for that moment when you can start exploiting the condition.

"Bowlers must understand how to bowl when the advantage isn't with them and wait for the right moment to bring the tricks out of their sleeves. I am happy that we did exactly that against Pakistan in the opening Test."

Sohel added that he was not surprised to see Shakib al Hasan excel with the ball despite not playing red-ball cricket quite regularly in the recent past. This was coupled by the fact that he was surrounded with lots of controversies , resolved only recently, for the time being at least.

"I don't think he is affected by outside noise and it has been the case for a long time now if you closely follow his career and so his performance was not surprising at all (despite being surrounded by recent controversy)."

"I believe his bowling is very natural. He can bowl effortlessly if he wants to. If you ask him to bowl all day, he can do it. But it depends on whether he wants to or not. He has an extraordinary ability to read batters. He can quickly figure out what type of delivery to bowl to a particular batter or what approach to take based on the pitch conditions."

In the recent past, the Bangladesh Tigers camp came into the limelight as national skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto credited the long term training for the success in the opening game against Pakistan.

Bangladesh had a long preparation camp ahead of the Pakistan series as BCB launched the Bangladesh Tigers camp, with new sets of goals from May 25 that worked extensively with red-ball cricketers.

BCB had also opted to send six Test cricketers in Bangladesh A squad for the opening four-day game of the two-match series against Pakistan Shaheens as a part of the preparation. Bangladesh travelled to Pakistan earlier than scheduled as their practice was hampered due to the political unrest in the country.

Sohel said that they can only judge the result of the camp following the second Test, as they have witnessed players failing to keep the tempo in the two-match Test series.

"I don't think the Tigers camp was designed with one Test in mind, rather we have eight Tests this year and we started keeping that in mind so that we can play well continuously unlike the past, when we played one Test well and did badly in the second Test. I think the biggest thing is how we perform in the next Test and whether we can be consistent in all the three departments," said Bangladesh Tigers head coach.

"We have practiced in the Tigers camp earlier for two years and at that point the concept was more like a High Performance Unit camp, practicing during the gap between Premier League and National League. The players who played well in the Premier League were expected to play in the national team in the future. But now that is not the case as we will practice for the whole year, and will try to fulfill the requirement of the national team by providing training facilities to the players round the year that can lead to skill development," he added.

"Earlier, players were not prepared enough as they got very little time before a series, and that is the reason we planned for a long-term training session. We are working as a feeder for the national team as per the requirement of the national team management. Earlier, we felt Tigers was a team and they will have a tour but now it is not the case as Tigers is a preparation program. The players that are coming to us are chosen by the national team coaching panel (headed by Chandika Hathurusingha) and the national selectors.

"The best part of the camp was the fact everyone practiced with a goal in mind (like they were aware that they are preparing for the Pakistan Test series at the moment, unlike the past when the camp was designed differently) and pushed them to get better every day so that they are well prepared for the upcoming Test matches," he concluded.

Bangladesh beat Pakistan by six wickets to seal historic cricket series win

Bangladesh seal their first Test series win against Pakistan with win in Rawalpindi to take the tour 2-0.

pakistan next tour cricket team

Bangladesh’s cricket team have sealed a historic 2-0 Test series win against Pakistan after securing a six-wicket victory in the second and final match of the tour.

Set 185 to win in Rawalpindi, the tourists chased down their target in the afternoon session of the final day on Tuesday to build on the 10-wicket win in the opening Test at the same venue. That match marked in itself Bangladesh’s first Test win against Pakistan.

Zakir Hasan powered 40 off only 39 balls at the top of the innings in Bangladesh’s successful chase to ensure there was little hope of a Pakistani comeback. The 26-year-old’s innings included three fours and two sixes in an opening stand of 58 with Shadman Islam.

The winning moment came, perhaps fittingly, with a cover drive off Abrar Ahmed by Shakib Al Hasan, who shared an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 32 with Mushfiqur Rahim to settle any nerves after Mominul Haque fell with the score on 153-4.

“It means a lot, can’t express with words. Really happy. Before we came, we were looking to win here. Everyone did their job. Very happy,” Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said.

Bangladesh’s first innings was rescued by Litton Das’s 136 in a partnership of 165 for the seventh wicket with Mehidy Hasan Miraz after his side were reduced to 26-6 in reply to the hosts’ 274. Mehidy’s 78 followed a five-wicket haul with the ball.

Pakistan, who saw three batters reach half-centuries in their first innings, were bowled out for 172 in their second knock as the batting woes of the first match came back to haunt them. Hasan Mahmud was the chief tormentor with 5-43 while Nahid Rana claimed 4-44.

“It’s a big achievement by the Bangladesh cricket team. I am part of this, so I am very happy,” wicketkeeper Litton said, reflecting on the match after his own crucial innings with the bat. “When Miraz and I were batting, the credit actually goes to Miraz because the way he faced 20 balls, and if he hits five or six fours, the game will be easier.

“We just had conversations like this. They had good momentum. We had to kill that momentum. And let’s see what happens next. And after lunch, we just felt free and just went and batted.”

The two defeats in the series extend Pakistan’s barren run in red-ball cricket at home to six losses and four draws since their victory against South Africa at Rawalpindi in 2021.

Pakistan Legends Tear Into Team After Embarrassing 0-2 Defeat Against Bangladesh

"it is hurting that our cricket has come to this stage. bangladesh deserve credit for their disciplined performances. but the way our batting has collapsed in this series is a bad sign," former test captain javed miandad said..

pakistan next tour cricket team

Pakistan cricket reached its lowest ebb on Tuesday while nosediving to a six-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the second Test here, and the stalwarts termed the 0-2 series defeat as “hurting.” It was Pakistan's sixth defeat in their last 10 Tests at home and this was also the first time Bangladesh have beaten their neighbours in a Test and series. “It is hurting that our cricket has come to this stage. Bangladesh deserve credit for their disciplined performances. But the way our batting has collapsed in this series is a bad sign,” former Test captain Javed Miandad said.

The second Test saw the Bangladesh batters dominate the second innings after Pakistan dropped pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi from the eleven and rested Naseem Shah.

Pakistan had Bangladesh reeling on 26 for 6 in their first innings before centurion Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a spectacular partnership to rescue their side.

Miandad felt that the players have lost confidence because of the bickering in the Pakistan board.

“I wouldn't just blame the players because whatever has happened in the board (PCB) in the last one and half years and the captaincy and management changes have affected the team,” he said.

Former captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq said losing three series and going without a win at home in nine Tests was a worrying record.

“Home series were always considered our best chance of beating the best sides in the past. But for this to happen the batsmen need to get runs,” he said.

Pakistan's record-breaking batsman Younis Khan said when a team enters a losing streak mentally it becomes difficult to come back.

“Our batters have got runs in the past but right now I think they need mental strengthening and a clear mind to overcome this crisis,” he said.

Former Test batter, Ahmed Shezad, however, blasted the batters saying they hopped around against the Bangladesh pacers.

“If you can't handle a bit of pace and movement even at home then the future is not very bright for us,” he said.

Former Test spinner, Iqbal Qasim asked the team management to groom existing and upcoming spinners as Pakistan's best chance of doing well at home was through spin bowlers and giving them helpful pitches.

“We don't have bowlers of the calibre of Sarfaraz Nawaz, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar or Shoaib now. So, we should be banking on our spinners to win us Tests at home.” Now with the latest setback, Pakistan's chances of even getting close to the final of the World Test Championship appears to have ended.

Captain Shan Masood's lack of runs has added to his nightmarish run as the leader as he has now lost all five Tests at home, and he was not helped by the struggles of senior batter Babar Azam.

However, the word is that red-ball coach Jason Gillispie and his white-ball counterpart Gary Kirsten have advised the PCB and selectors to not press the panic button as it will further dent the confidence of the players.

Meanwhile, Gillispie and high-performance coach Tim Nielsen will fly home to Australia for a short break.
