Jagannath Temple in Puri: Essential Visitor Guide

What to Know When Visiting Odisha's Jagannath Temple

jagannath puri tour guide

Sharell Cook.

The Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha , is one of the holy char dham abodes of God that are considered to be extremely auspicious for Hindus to visit (the others are Badrinath , Dwarka, and Rameshwaram). If you don't let money-hungry Hindu priests (locally known as pandas ) mar your experience, you'll find that this massive temple complex is a remarkable place. However, only Hindus are allowed inside.

Puri is just under two hours south of Bhubaneshwar , Odisha's capital city. The nearest airport is situated in Bhubaneshwar. There are frequent buses and trains from Bhubaneshwar to Puri. Puri's railway station also receives long distance trains from all over India.

Temple History and Deities

Construction of the Jagannath temple dates back to the 12th century. It was initiated by Kalinga ruler Anantavarman Chodaganga Dev and later completed, in its current form, by King Ananga Bhima Deva.

The temple is home to three deities -- Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra -- whose substantially sized wooden idols sit on a throne. Balabhadra is six feet tall, Jagannatha is five feet, and Subhadra is four feet tall.

Puri is regarded by Hindus as one of the four holy Char Dham — sacred abodes associated with Lord Vishnu (the Hindu god of preservation) in India. Lord Jagannath is considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu, who has descended to earth to provide protection during the current Kali Yuga (dark age). He's the presiding deity of Odisha and is integrally worshiped by most households in the state. The culture of Jagannath worship is a unifying one that promotes tolerance, communal harmony, and peace.

Based on the C har Dham , Lord Vishnu dines at Puri (he bathes at Rameswaram, gets dressed and anointed at Dwarka, and meditates at Badrinath). Hence, a great deal of significance is given to food at the temple. Referred to as mahaprasad , Lord Jagannath permits his devotees to partake in eating the 56 items that are offered to him, as a means of redemption and spiritual advancement.

Important Features of the Temple

The Jagannath temple has four entry gates, each facing a different direction. The main gate on the eastern side of the temple, known as Lion Gate, is guarded by two stone lions. An unmissable towering pillar known as Aruna Stambha stands about 11 meters high outside it. The pillar represents the charioteer of the Sun God and used to be part of the Sun Temple in Konark . However, it was relocated in the 18th century after the temple was abandoned, in order to save it from invaders.

The temple's inner courtyard is reached by climbing 22 steps (called Baisi Pahacha) from the main gate. There are approximately 30 smaller temples surrounding the main temple, and ideally, they should all be visited before seeing the deities in the main temple. However, devotees who are short on time can make do with just visiting the three most important smaller temples beforehand. These are the Ganesh temple, Vimala temple, and Laxmi temple.

Other notable features inside the 10-acre Jagannath temple complex include:

  • an ancient Kalpavata banyan tree, which is said to fulfill devotees' wishes.
  • the world's largest kitchen where the mahaprasad is cooked in clay pots. Apparently, the kitchen produces enough food to feed 100,000 people each day!
  • Anand Bazaar where the mahaprasad is sold to devotees in various sized pots. It's available throughout the day but fresh dishes are provided after 2-3 p.m. Anand Bazaar can be directly accessed by taking the north gate exit.
  • a small museum called Niladri Vihar near the western gate, dedicated to Lord Jagannath and the 12 incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
  • Koili Baikuntha, where Lord Krishna was believed to have been cremated after being accidentally killed by hunter Jara Savara. It's in the northwest corner of the temple, between the inner and outer compound wall. During the Nabakalebar ritual, new idols of Lord Jagannath are carved out of wood and the old ones are buried there.

More than 20 different rituals are performed at the temple daily. The rituals reflect those carried out in everyday life, such as bathing, brushing teeth, getting dressed, and eating.

In addition, the flags tied to the temple's Neela Chakra are changed every day at sunset in a ritual that's been going on for 800 years. Two members of the Chola family, which was given exclusive rights to hoist the flag by the king who built the temple, perform the fearless feat of climbing 165 feet without any support to affix new flags. The old flags are sold to a few lucky devotees.

How to Visit the Temple

The Jagannath temple is open from 5 a.m. to midnight. To avoid the crowds, the best time to go is early in the morning around 7 a.m. after the first aarti ritual, or after 9 p.m. The ambiance is evocative at night, when lamps are lit and the temple is illuminated.

Vehicles, with the exception of cycle rickshaws, are not permitted near the temple complex. You'll need to take one or walk from the car park. The temple's main Lion Gate is located on Grand Road. Entry to the temple compound is free. You'll find guides at the entrance, who will take you around the temple complex for a negotiable fee (about 200 rupees). It's not compulsory to hire one though.

Due to government restrictions, it's no longer possible to go inside the inner sanctum of the temple where the deities are kept. Instead, the deities can be viewed from a distance, depending on how crowded it is. A new ticketed darshan (viewing) system is proposed but yet to be fully implemented.

There is also a ticket system in place for viewing the temple's famous kitchen. Tickets cost 5 rupees each. Don't miss it! The food is prepared in the same manner as it was centuries ago, with traditional methods and implements. About 15,000 new clay pots are transported to the temple every day for cooking in, as the pots are never reused.

Allow a couple of hours to completely explore the temple complex.

What to Keep in Mind

There are unfortunately many reports of greedy pandas forcefully demanding excessive amounts of money from devotees. Recent intervention and monitoring by the police has greatly curbed this problem. The pandas are known to be experts at extracting money from people though, particularly at the smaller temples within the complex.

If you are approached by any pandas , it's strongly recommended that you ignore them. If you do wish to avail of any of their services, make sure you negotiate the price beforehand and do not give any more than agreed. Most hotels have in-house pandas and you may be pushed to use their services. Be aware that you will pay a premium if you choose to.

If you wish to donate money to the temple, do so only at the official donation counter and obtain a receipt. Don't hand over money to the pandas or anyone else.

Barricades have been placed inside the temple to ensure the orderly flow of devotees and reduce harassment by pandas. There's a rush towards the inner sanctum though.

Note that you're not permitted to carry any belongings inside the temple, including cell phones, shoes, socks, cameras, and umbrellas. All leather items are banned as well. There is a facility near the main entrance where you can deposit your items for safekeeping.

Why Can't Everyone Go Inside the Temple?

The rules of entry into the Jagannath temple have caused considerable controversy. Only those who are born Hindu are allowed inside the temple. However, there have been instances of famous Hindus being denied entry. These include Indira Gandhi (the third Prime Minister of India) because she had married a non-Hindu, Saint Kabir because he had dressed like a Muslim, Rabindrinath Tagore since he followed Brahmo Samaj (a reform movement within Hinduism), and Mahatma Gandhi because he came with dalits (untouchables, people without a caste).

There are no restrictions as to who can enter other Jagannath temples, so what's the issue at Puri?

Numerous explanations are given, with one of the most popular ones being that people who do not follow the traditional Hindu way of life are unclean. Since the temple is considered to be the holy seat of Lord Jagannath, it has special importance. The temple caretakers also feel that the temple is not a sightseeing attraction. It's a place of worship for devotees to come and spend time with the god that they believe in. Past attacks on the temple by Muslims are sometimes mentioned as reasons too.

In 2018, the Supreme Court asked the temple to consider allowing all visitors inside, irrespective of their religion. This is yet to be decided though.

If you're not a Hindu, you'll have to be content with viewing the temple from the street or paying some money to view it from the roof of one of the nearby buildings (the old library opposite the main gate is a popular spot).

Ratha Yatra Festival

Once a year, in June or July, the idols are taken out of the temple in what is Odisha's biggest and most iconic festival. The Ratha Yatra festival sees the gods being transported around on towering chariots, which have been made to resemble temples. The construction of the chariots commences earlier in the year and is an intensive, detailed process.

What Else to Do Nearby

Local responsible tourism company Grass Routes Journeys offers an interesting and insightful three-hour guided tour of the Old City surrounding the Jagannath Temple (including the pottery area). This tour is highly recommended for foreigners who aren't permitted to go inside the temple but want to learn about it.

Puri Tour Guide Feature Image

Puri is a popular city of Odisha state, famous for Sri Jagannath temple, and also as a beach destination of India. This is one of the most religious cities in the country and attracts a lot of crowd throughout the year. For a budget destination, puri is a good choice within all neighboring states. It has everything like lots of temples, some historical structures, beaches, Zoological gardens, lakes and many more.

I have been to Puri multiple times and gathered some information that may help you in your next trip.

Where to stay in Puri?

Accommodations in Puri is very affordable than most of the other cities in India. You will get your stay in almost any budget. Panthaniwas by OTDC, Puri Hotel, Victoria Club, Park resort are few of them known for good luxury and impressive sea view, whereas Hotel Sambit, Hotel Dolphin will be on a budget side with sea-facing rooms. There are other options like holiday homes and Bharat Sevashram. Holiday homes can be booked from different government organization’s employee recreation clubs.

I stayed at Netai Kunj a few years back, I must say the rooms were more luxurious than of Puri Hotel and the price was one-third. The only downside, it was 5 minutes’ walk to the seashore. We are in a process to collect enough Holiday Homes listed on our Recommended Hotel Details.

Sri Jagannath Temple

This is an important Hindu temple, dedicated to Sri Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. A famous festival Ratha Yatra, every year took place here, where three gods (Jagannath, Balaram, and Subhadra) are pulled on Rath (decorated temple car), millions of people participate in the event. Unlike another god, these gods are made of wood and get replaced every twelve years with an exact replica. Other than the Hindu religion, no one is allowed inside the temple. But a small replica is built for those who cannot enter.

  • Puja Timing: 6 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM.

This kitchen considered to be the world’s largest and biggest Kitchen. More than 5000 people get Bhog every day and in the festive season, the amounts get multiply many times.

Lots of men and women structure in the wall of the temple tells the story of that time. The Chakra works as a sundial and accurately tells time and other Chakras denotes the different phase of Life.

The temple was built in the shape of a temple car (Rath) and completely made of stones & metals (only in few joints). "Rath Yatra and the Beaches"

Puri tourism.

Puri in Odisha is one of the four must-visit pilgrimage sites for Hindus because of Jagannath Temple that forms the part of Char Dham in India. Puri is a beach city located on the coast of Bay of Bengal which is one of the favourites among people of West Bengal for a short trip.

Having gained popularity among hippies back in the 1970s due to the legalisation of Bhang, Puri is still a popular destination among backpackers, however, the availability of bhang is now limited. With a plethora of hotels and homestays, the local tourist like to stay near the New Marine Drive and the backpackers prefer to stay near Chakra Tirtha. The Rath Yatra (chariot festival) which takes place during the month of June-July should not be missed if you are planning to visit during this time. Known as the resting place of Lord Shiva, the majestic history and heritage of Puri date back to the 3rd century B. C. Puri,  Konark  and Bhubaneshwar complete the Golden Triangle of Orissa, with their religious significance and cultural heritage being the centres of tourism in this state. There are a lot of places near Puri that one must visit, like the Chilika lake , Puri beach , Gundicha Ghar and the very famous Sun temple of Konark. Puri is soon turning into an industrial hub with major manufacturing companies coming here.

Travel quotes updates are not updated properly. In quotes if we request to change also its not taking as a priority to change. There is a lot of miscommunication between travel triangle and agents. We can't proceed with which one is correct. If arrange the hotel it will be convenient for travellers. In puri hotel person are keep on calling ( 15 mins once) to vacate the room . Going forward we have to book more package. If it's again will happen it will be a bad experience for travellers.

Sandesh's 2 days trip to Odisha

The Hotel Vijoya International was good but the additional bed already booked was non standard and we actually did not used as it was falling. Food at Hotel was wonderful The disappointing part was on Cab inclusive package. If I had just booked hotel on MMT it would have cost me 4500 Max for one night and 1 day konark at 2000 and other day Chilka at 2500 Max. So maximum cost would be 9000-12000 Max. With nothing special I feel the tour cost was overcharged

The Jagannath Puri Yatra conducted by Tirtha Yatra was excellent! Thank you.

I had sent my mother and aunts with the Tirtha Yatra team. The Deity darshan was very nice not to forget the excellent sthala purana narration. The accomodation was very good. Tirtha Yatra had covered the unknown places which are not covered by other tour operators. My mother and aunts were very much drowned in spiritual ecstacy throughout the yatra such that they called it a truly memorable and spiritual yatra. We specially thank Agrani Krishna Dasa who took care of each yatri individually.

We are gladdened by your kind words and support! We at Tirtha Yatra believe that every yatri traveling with us should get the best spiritual experience and so we leave no stone turned to achieve the same. A big Thank you from us.

My wife and I participated in the recently concluded Jagannath Puri Yatra. We are thankful that due to the tireless efforts of Tour Directors Mr. Anand Santhanam and Pandurangadasa, we could have a very memorable lifetime experience of a great darshan of LordJagannatha, besides having wonderful darshans in various temples in Bhubaneshwar and Puri. Sri. Anand Santanam and Sri. Pandiurangadasa with their sthala puranas and other significant religious information. Arranging Mahaprasadam to the yatris exclusively was the highlight and blessing of the yatra.. We are grateful to Tirtha Yatra team who made this all possible.

' src=

The mahaprasadam of Lord Jagannath in Puri was the crowning glory of this yatra. The yatra director is a very devoted and knowledgeable person. The other staff too were very friendly and service oriented.

' src=

The sthala purana narration along with the trips to the important yet unknown temples is a unique feature of Tirtha Yatra’s trips. I highly appreciate the personalised care offered to the yatris.

Thank you very much for your support.

' src=

The pilgrimage was very memorable. A pilgrim can be assured of good darshan if they travel with you. Usually, one has to undergo austerity when they go for a pilgrimage, however Tirtha Yatra makes sure that everyone gets comfortable accommodation and hygienic food during the entire pilgrimage. The samudra snana before the darshan of Sri Jagannath Swami was an additional bonus.

Thank you very much! The Yatri is always our topmost priority.

In this tour you have not covered Gangasagar. Whether is it possible to cover Gangasagar also. Or are you planning to announce another tour which includes Gangasagar among other temples detailed in your present tour separately in later part of the year?

You can visit Gangasagar during the journey at an additional cost and additional 2 days. We shall have a separate yatra including Ganga Sagar for which dates haven’t been announced.

' src=

I would like more details abt this yatra. Who will be the tour director?

Thanks Shilpa

' src=

Namaste Madam, at this stage we cannot inform you about who shall be the Yatra Director for this Yatra.

' src=

For this tour what is the starting destination ? Is this from Chennai to Chennai or some other place

You will have to fly in from the city you live in to Bhubaneswar. We shall start at Bhubaneswar and end at Kolkata from where you will have to fly back to your home city.

Thx for the prompt reply. The above query is based on your itinerary which indicates, over night stay in Ganga Sagar on Feb 14th, Day 6. Thx once again. I have already sent the booking form and my husband’s would be sent this week end.

You are Welcome. We have made slight changes to the itinerary, looking at the comfort of our yatris and hence, have now removed the overnight stay at Ganga Sagar line. Thank you for choosing to travel with Tirtha Yatra.

I read the articles about the difficulties in reaching Ganga Sagar through various means like ferry, small cramped vehicles etc., and also the poor unclean accommodation at Ganga sagar island.. How and where are you planning to arrange clean decent accommodation and transport facility to reach sagar island and Kapila muni temple. I would be little concerned, if I have to be exposed to dirty, cramped, congested accommodation and transport facility. Can you please clarify the above. I am in fact thinking of convincing 2 older (70+) family members to join this trip and hence this query.

With respect to Ganga Sagar, we book a ferry, and then we hire private autos in which you can sit comfortably. With respect to accommodation, we stay in Kolkata overnight and return to Kolkata for an overnight stay. So in that case, there won’t be any issue with respect to facilities.

' src=

what is the extra cost for taking single room not sharing if i come single can you arrange for sharing with a person what are other non included cost in amount or in figures can you book to and from chennai air ticket or give us when to arrive or where to meet before booking

Sir, the additional cost for a single room would be INR 6000/- . Our default room allocation pattern is twin sharing rooms and we can book your tickets to-fro Chennai. Every other cost excluded detail is mentioned on the Jagannath Puri Yatra page. The meeting place and timings, etc will be sent to you 10 days in advance of the yatra. Please free to call us on 9844700850 if you require further clarification.

Inside the Puri Jagannath Temple Complex

Within the inner compound, you’ll discover not only the main temple but also several other temples, bije sthalis, and various monuments and structures, as indicated on the temple map in the Record of Rights. Explore the rich diversity of sacred sites and historical elements within this revered complex. Here we have listed a few that you must not miss during your visit to Puri Jagannath Temple.

Vimala Temple –As you explore the inner enclosure of the main temple, you will find Vimala temple facing East. This ancient temple holds the distinction of being the oldest among its peers. The Matsya Purana, Kapila Samhita, Skanda Purana, Tantra Chudamani, and Devi Bhagabata all make references to Maa Vimala. According to Tantra Sastra, Maa Vimala and Shree Jagannatha are revered as Bhairavi and Bhairava.

The goddess’s image is believed to be crafted from Laksa (wax) and features four arms. In her hands, she holds an aksamala (rosary), a human figure, and a kalasa (jar), while her fourth hand is poised in the ‘Varada’ gesture. Recognized as a prominent ‘Shakti Pitha’ in India, this temple sees the offering of Shree Jagannatha’s Prasada to Maa Vimala. Notably, Saradiya Shola puja and special rites are observed annually during the month of Aswaina in this sacred abode.

Satya Narayana Temple –This temple houses a four-armed statue of Shree Narayana. In the upper right hand, there is a disc, while the lower right hand displays the ‘Abhaya mudra’. The upper left hand holds a conch, and the lower left hand wields a mace. The granite statue stands at a height of 5 feet. Jaya and Vijaya stand on both sides, and at the feet of Satya Narayana, Garuda is positioned, kneeling down. The temple is oriented towards the North..

Shree Nrusingha Temple – On the Southern side of the temple within its inner enclosure you come across a shrine dedicated to Nrusingha, facing east. This temple is a Panchratha Rekha Deula without a Jagamohana and predates the construction of the present Shree Mandira. Ancient stone inscriptions adorn the exterior wall of the temple. The main deity of the shrine is Nrusingha, and a diminutive image of the deity is positioned on a lofty seat inside the temple.

Puri Jagannath Temple

Lakshmi Temple – Another very important temple inside the temple complex is Lakshmi temple which is at the North-Western corner of the inner enclosure of the main temple. Tradition holds that a ruler from the Ganga dynasty in the 12th-13th century A.D. constructed the temple. The temple shares a nearly same architectural style with the Jagannatha temple. Within its sanctum, Goddess Lakshmi is venerated. As a form of Gajalakshmi, she holds two elephants in her upper two hands, displaying a four-armed form with the lower hands in the ‘abhaya’ and ‘varada’ postures.

Surya Temple – Located on the Northern side of the Shree Jagannatha temple and facing East, this temple follows a saptaratha plan. The main deity of the temple is Surya, the Sun God. The image of the Sun enshrined in the temple is said to have been transported from Konark by King Narasimha Deva of the Bhoj dynasty (1622-1647 A.D.)

Bata Ganesha Temple –This is a significant temple devoted to Lord Ganesha situated below the Kalpabata within the temple compound. Referred to as the Bata Ganesha temple, it features the image of Ganesha’s vehicle, the mouse, placed in front of the temple. Historical references indicate that in the 16th century, the poet Jagannatha Das would sit beside this temple and recite his Odia Bhagavata compositions to sizable gatherings.

Puri Jagannath Temple

Kanchi Ganesha Temple -The deity is also referred to as Bhanda Ganesha. Located  on the Western side of the temple premise, this temple houses an image that is said to have been brought from Kanchi by Gajapati Purushottama Deva during his Kanchi expedition. The deity is depicted as four-armed, with the image of his consort placed on his lap. Due to the deity’s erotic nature, the image is thought to be a Tantric representation.

Kalpabata (Tree) – Within the inner enclosure of the temple, on its southern side, stands a majestic banyan tree known as ‘Kalpabata.’ This ancient tree is prominently featured in both the Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana. According to local beliefs, individuals who circumambulate the sacred Kalpabata and step on its shadow are believed to attain ‘Kesavalaya,’ signifying the divine abode of Vishnu. The tree, steeped in mythological significance, serves as a serene spot for devotees to engage in spiritual practices and rituals.

Rohini Kunda (Pool) –As per the Skanda Purana, within the navel region of this sacred site, you will find three significant elements: the Rohini Kunda, the Kalpabata, and the divine image. The Rohini Kunda, a revered pool, is located slightly to the west of the banyan tree, considered sacred due to the presence of Vishnu and Lakshmi. Presently, the pool is manifested as a stone water-vat, devoid of natural water. Within this vat, two carvings are featured in separate squares—one depicting the Nila Chakra of Vishnu, and the other portraying a four-handed crow. You receive blessings as water is poured and sprinkled from this symbolic representation.

Mukti Mandapa (Brahmasana) –You will find the Mukti Mandapa to be a structure measuring 38 feet in length and 38 feet in width, forming a square shape with 16 pillars. According to Madalapanji, historical records state that the renovation of this sacred space was carried out by Gourirani, the wife of Mansingh, the chief of the army of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The Mukti Mandapa holds significance as a place where Brahmin pandits from specific villages, Dandi sanyasis, Jagadguru Sankaracharya, Deula Purohita, and Rajgurus are granted the privilege to sit.

The Divine Kitchen or Roshanara – One of the most fascinating aspects of the Jagannath Temple is its mega kitchen, known as the Rosaghora. This kitchen is recognized as the world’s largest Satvik kitchen, where food is prepared following traditional Hindu culinary practices. Over 1,000 dedicated cooks work tirelessly to prepare 56 different types of offerings, collectively known as Chhappan Bhog, which are served to the deities six times a day. The kitchen is spread over an acre and is believed to be supervised by the goddess Mahalakshmi herself.

The Sacred Mahaprasada of Puri Jagannath Temple

The Mahaprasada, the divine offering of the Jagannath Temple, holds a special place in the hearts of devotees. After being offered to Lord Jagannath, the food becomes sanctified, and it is then made available to the devotees as Mahaprasada. Traditional rituals are followed during the offering, and the food is served on banana leaves. Pilgrims can savor the Mahaprasada in the Ananda Bazar area or opt for priests to deliver packets of Mahaprasada to their accommodations. The assortment of dishes includes various rice preparations, vegetable curries, lentil dishes, and sweet delicacies.

Additionally, a grand reception center with a capacity of 6,000 people and queue management facilities will be built to ensure a seamless visit for devotees.

The Parikrama project represents a significant milestone in the temple’s ongoing development and its journey towards becoming a world-class spiritual destination.

Dress Code and Code of Conduct

To maintain the sanctity of the Puri Jagannath Temple, a dress code has been implemented for devotees. Proper attire is expected, and visitors wearing half pants, shorts, torn jeans, skirts, or sleeveless dresses are not permitted to enter the temple premises. Devotees are advised to dress modestly and respectfully, keeping in mind the sacredness of the place.

In addition to the dress code, the temple administration has also imposed certain rules and regulations to ensure a peaceful and harmonious environment for all visitors. Sealdah Puri Duronto Express is a good train, and the fare is 600 rupees for non-ac and 1100 rupees for AC 3 tires, including meals. The time is 8 pm departure from Sealdah, and Puri arrival is 4:00 am.

Our 7 Days Puri tour guide

We started our journey with a group of 4 people, boarded from  Howrah station, and the Howrah Puri Express left the station around 10:40 pm . The next morning we reached Bhubaneswar at 5:10 am.

Bhubaneswar, a smart city, is called the city of the temple, and Puri is the most famous holy place in India; it’s also called the glory of Orisa.

After reaching Bhubaneswar, we hired an auto, visited Megeswar and Rajarani temple, and checked in to our hotel. The railway station is 2 km from there and is in a perfect place. The hotel surrounds many temples within walking distance. They have an attached restaurant serving good quality food at a reasonable price.

mukteswar temple

We reached the hotel, rested , had breakfast, and went for the Bhubaneswar local sightseeing. We visit some temples, Udaygiri and Khandagiri locally. In the afternoon, we hired an Uber for Nandan Kanan. We already booked an entry ticket from the Nandankanan site earlier. We save time because the queue is huge, which I saw. It’s one of Asia’s best and largest zoos , and kids can enjoy it a lot there.

The next day, We visited Pipli, left Bhubaneswar and reached Puri. We spend time at Puri Sea Beach in the evening and return to the hotel.

The next day, I went to Chilika Lake and returned. You can see dolphins here. It’s a full-day journey. Book OTDC for  sightseeing ; it’s the best.

On the last  day, we did a  local side-seeing visit to Sri Jagannath Puri Temple, Markandeswara Temple, Sudarshan Crafts Museum, Gundicha Temple Golden Beach, Buddhist temple, Raghurajpur Gourio math etc. In the evening, we boarded from Puri station to return to Kolkata.

My Puri Packing list

I always carry extra clothes for the beach, Tharmas, mosquito coil, power bank, Hitting cup, medicine, etc.

11 Famous places in Puri Sea Beach and Bhubaneswar near me

There are many places in Puri, but the following places are always in the hype.

  • Dhabalgiri temple
  • Udaygiri and Khandagiri
  • Nandan Kanan zoo
  • Puri sea beach
  • Puri Jagannath temple
  • Pipli and Raghurajpur Artist Village
  • Puri local Side Seen – Gundicha, Buddhist Chinese temple, Sri Gouria Bihara, and others
  • Konark Sun Temple
  • Chandra Bhaga and Ramchandi Temple
  • Chilika Wildlife Sanctuary and Lake

1. Nandan Kanan Zoo

Nandan Kanan Zoo is the 2nd largest zoo in India, famous for its white tiger safari. Tourists mainly came to Puri first and took the package for the side seen like Dhouli, Nandan Kanan, etc. So it’s a full-day tour plan with less time, only a long journey achieved during this travel.

But staying one or two days in Bhubaneswar will help you reach those places very comfortably, and you can spend extra time in those places after we move to Puri. On our first day at Bhubaneswar, we first visited this place.

2. Dhabalgiri Temple

After 3 hours in Nandan Kanan, we booked another Uber for Dhabalgiri/Dhouli. There is a unique attraction that I should share with you. Light and sound shows happened in the evening based on the entire Dhabalgiri as a frame; they do not use any standard screen. It’s a 45-minute show , and the ticket is just 45 rupees.

The show is based on King Ashoka and the story of how to make the stupa. It’s a unique one. We again booked a cab from Dhouli in the evening and returned to the hotel for dinner and rest.

The next morning, we booked a cab and went to Dhabalgiri again because we could not see the entire Dhabalgiri properly on the last evening. However, the Dhabaliri and stupa looked magnificent in the sunlight. Outside there, we bought some Prasad.

dhouli bhubaneswar

3. Udaygiri and Khandagiri

That same day, we went to Udaygiri and Khandagiri. Both have historical values; Khandagiri means khanda, which means broken, and Giri means hill . In the Khandagiri temple, Jain Tirthankara’s sculpture is made with “Kastipathar.”

The entry fee was 2 rupees only. Beware of monkeys in Khandagiri. I had a terrible experience with them. Many monkeys suddenly jumped on me because a local person gave me some fruits in my hand, and I was very scared.

Monkey attack at Udayagiri Bhubaneswar

From Khandagiri, we hired an app cab for the Lingaraj temple, the most famous temple in Bhubaneswar. After that, we reach the station and catch the Dhouli Express for Puri.

4. Puri sea beach

When I reached Puri and passed the beachside road, I waited to reach the hotel, put the luggage in the hotel and ran to the  Puri sea beach  to enjoy the waves.

Puri is one of the significant  holy Dhams in India . Located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, It has one of the finest beaches in the world. It is just a place to witness and participate in colourful festivals. Puri is famous for its annual  festival of chariots , the  Rath Yatra . The pilgrimage town also abides by artisans and craftsmen who produce unique handicrafts.

But when I reached the hotel, I found it was a budget hotel in Puri Sea Beach. It’s near the beach, and it has a  cooking facility .

5. Swargadwar Market

Puri sea beach is also known as Swargadwar. We finished our lunch and went to the beach again in the evening. Moreover, my daughter enjoyed the beach more than us. Lastly, we buy some dinner and go back to the hotel. ‘ Chanapora’  is a sweet item , one of the famous local sweets in Orissa.  Khaja  is also very famous there. In  Jagannath temple , “ Khaja ” is treated as  Prasad .

6. Puri Jagannath temple

The following day, we went to the Sri Jagannath temple at  6:30 am . Mobile shoes, etc., have to be put outside of the temple counter. A lot of pandas (priests) guide you inside the temple. There are many temples inside the main temple. You can find many exciting stories about all the temples.

Outside the temple, there is an Orissa Govt store called  Banani . You can buy different clothing like  Kottke  sari,  Sambalpuri sari,  Kottke bed sheets, etc. Next, we went to the  Markendeswar  temple by “Riskha” for 60 rupees. After visiting the Markendeswar temple, we moved to  Raghurajpur  and  Pipli  by hiring an auto, which cost 1000 rs from there. Both places are very famous in Orissa.

7. Pipli, Raghurajpur, and Puri Local Sightseeing

After, we went to Pipli and had breakfast at a roadside ‘Dhaba.’ You can visit Pipli in Bhubaneswar to Puri on a car journey. We bought handmade and aplic work products like an umbrella, bag, etc., and went to Raghurajpur. Please visit Raghurajpur whenever you do sightseeing for tourist places in Puri. It would help if you appreciated the village because of its talent for crafts and painting. We finished lunch in a Dhaba, had some coconut water, and visited ‘ Gunchicha temple.’  The entry fee is 5 rupees only.

Raghurajpur artist village

8. Puri local Side Seen – Gundicha, Buddhist Chinese temple, Sri Gouria Bihara, and others

Gundicha temple is  also known as ‘Jagannath’s Masir Bari “. The temple has lots of a statue of Lord Krishna and other goddesses . It can be added when you visit the Puri mandir tour.

Then we visited the  Chinese temple . It’s a small temple, but it’s a unique one. All the props which are used for the Buddhist religion are stored there. You can buy many types of  Buddhist sculptures  from there.

After that, we reached for “ Sri Gouria Bihara ” math. The environment is enjoyable, but the road is narrow and damaged. After spending some time there, we returned to the hotel and rested . In the evening, we went to the beach and hired four seated cars for the next day’s Konark tour (which cost 1700 rupees). We spent the rest of the day on the Puri Sea beach and shopped in the Swargadwar market. Our tour ends on this day.

9. Konark Sun Temple

The following day, we first visited  the Konark sun temple  (entry fee 30 rupees). On the way to the temple, many shops sell Kaju, Pesta nuts, etc. If you wish to buy, you should bargain for the best price. Then, we take a guide ( for 100 rs) to the Konark sun temple. He describes all the  engraving designs  and details of the (chariot) Rath’s wheel. In March, during those days, Puri’s temperature is very high (38 degrees).

Konark light and sound show

While in Konark, see the  light and sound 3D show . It happened every day. The Program’s name is “Aarunaday.” The show’s time is 7:30 pm, a 35-minute program. The ticket price is  50 rupees . At 6:00 pm, the ticket counter opened every day. The theme is how the Konark mandir was built at that time. There are 250 seats and three languages, Hindi /English / Oriya in the headphone.

English -Kabir Bedi, Hindi – Sekhar Suman, Oriya – Vijay mahanti.

konark sun temple

Note :- Don’t try to swim in the Chandrabhaga River. It’s dangerous. You can rent Scooty for 350 rupees per day. Security deposit 350 rupees. Bike rent is 800-1000 rupees per day. Contact My Puri Bike Rental, ON-ROAD – Bike Rental Company, Puri.

10. Chandra Bhaga and Ramchandi Temple

Next, we visited Chandrabhaga; It’s a beach with beauty. Kushbhadra River and the Bay of Bengal can both be seen nicely. After spending a few minutes there, we went to the Ramchadi temple. After we returned to the hotel, we took lunch and rested.

Again, we visited Jagannath temple at 4:30 pm for the flag uploading ceremony. It happens every day, and many people stay outside to see it. After that, we did some shopping (Utkalika is the govt. registered shop) and bought some sweets to bring back to Kolkata.

11. Chilika Wildlife Sanctuary and lake

If you want to visit the Chilka River, take one day more, as it is a  4-hour  journey from Swargadwar. You can find one small temple on the hilltop after boating and seeing the tiny dolphins in the river.

Book a boat (220 rupees) and an AC bus (355 rupees) from OTDC per head for boating. Don’t go for private boats; the boat sounds heavy, and dolphins have fled from the sound. On the way to Chilika, they also visit  the Alarnath temple  and  Chilka nature interpretation centre .

Attention : – There is a trap for the Visitor in Chilka by local people. At a halt, local bikers came and acted as help you. They will say there is a short route for the lake, but don’t leave NH316. The boat charges are almost triple, approximately 4500 rupees, but if you come from the main road (NH316), the boat ride charge is 1800.

The last day of Puri

The last day is homecoming day. We spent all day on the sea beach, taking a bath for a long time and enjoying the waves. Around 5 pm, we check out from the hotel and take an auto to Puri railway station. Duranto Express is a very comfortable train (departure at 8:30 pm); it provides dinner included in the ticket. At 4 am, we came back to  Sealdah railway station .

Travel savings plan

At Bhubaneswar, we visit all the tourist spots by  Uber  cab.  Coming from Puri and sightseeing in Bhubaneswar is a huge journey.  So better to stay one day in Bhubaneswar. It’s my first  money-saving trick for the  Puri tour.

Puri Best time to visit

You can visit Puri throughout the year. Mid-April is best in the summer and is the season for the famous Chandan yatra, and June- July is famous for the Rathyatra of Lord Jagannath.

Puri Shopping

We buy a handmade umbrella, a wallet from Pipli, a handmade toy from Raghurajpur, a Kokti saree, a bedsheet, a baby dress, a t-shirt, Salwar, Panjabi, shirt from Puri. Compared to Kolkata, the Puri clothing market is cheap, and the product quality is good.

Puri  food

Bengali food is available. Sweets are exceptional, like –  Chenapora ,  Khaja, Madanmohan  etc.

Puri Khaja shop

Nrusingha Sweets( near Jagannath temple), Kakatua Sweets, and Ganguram (near Swargadwar) are famous for Khaja.

Things to remember:

All-time carry ID proof. Carry food if you have a baby.
