The 2km trail to the top has a small tea house surrounded by wild daisies on the way, which takes you 45 mins on an average journey.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Finding an entirely green pocket in a city can be difficult but that’s not the case in Dalhousie. You look to your right? Trees. Left? Yep, more greenery. Anywhere you look, nothing but greenery, and at no point do you get tired of it! One such place that’s the epitome of this exact quality of Dalhousie is the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is the ideal spot to take a hike under the shelter of towering deodar and fir trees that selectively let sunlight filter through. For company, you’ll have deer prancing around and the sound of birds chirping to themselves or possibly babbling about you.

The entire sanctuary covers a space of 30.69 km and there are specific marked trails that are safe to go on during the day . December to February is also a great time to visit Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary to feel like you’re actually part of a winter wonderland only seen in snowglobes. Make snow angels, post a billion stories, Kalatop is the perfect little place for it all.

Did you know? – The hills are alive with the sound of music in Dainkund, literally! Dainkund Hills are referred to as the ‘singing hills’ of India . When the wind passes through the serene hills and valleys, it creates a sound that makes it seem like it sings. It’s not like actual musical, but more like the wind here is being super talkative.

Chamera Lake

The view of this picturesque lake would easily remind you of a picture from a desk calendar at a tourist office. What’s the view? A pristine snake-shaped lake cutting through a mountain belt, pretty much a visual treat.

Chamera lake is a famous tourist spot and when there, indulge in activities like trying some snacks from the food stalls around or taking a boat ride . There are powerboats and speed boats available, so pick the ride that is suitable to you. We’d say Chamera is that perfect picnic spot where you can chill with a book, stroll around and take in that relaxing lake view.

Jot Pass is a spot where tourists take a break from the road to digest the view of the scenic Dhauladhar chain of mountains . But we must warn you – it can get so scenic that it tempts you to take your eyes off the road. Do that for too long and you’ll find yourself plunging over a cliff edge. You need to be careful just like you would be extra careful while maneuvering through any other mountain pass. Do your best to avoid getting distracted with the scenery. Always stop your vehicle at the side of the road at a tourist junction where you see benches with sheds to sit and capture the view.

Jot also gets less attention from the usual places to visit in Dalhousie so it won’t be as crowded. There is an ‘I Love Jot’ sign that you can pose with for that classic touristy pic. If you want to just stretch your legs and relax, you can consider dropping by the Jot Nature Park too.

Bakrota Hills View Point 

This is the point in Dalhousie where you’ll probably want to bottle up the fresh air and take it back home with you. Bakrota Hills is a refreshing place to see for stunning views of the majestic Himalayan mountain range. It’s definitely a luxury to stroll here aimlessly, giving your legs the freedom to wander without a plan.

You can easily walk to these hills and don’t need to plan much for the hike. It’s a fairly easy one that even the not-so-young can attempt. That’s one of the beauties of Dalhousie, none of the day excursions are stressful, but have just the right amount of relaxation for your mind and body.

St. John’s Church

Built in 1863 during the British regime, St. John’s Church is the oldest church in Dalhousie. The structure resembles churches found in England and bears Victorian-era architecture. This is a wonderful site to visit if you generally like visiting old churches . You can also consider seeing a few more churches namely – St. Francis (built in 1894), St. Andrew (1903) and St. Patrick (1909).

For those history buffs at heart, we even highly recommend that you can drop by the Raizada Hans Raj Memorial Trust Library after you see the church. This library is where you’ll find snippets of what Dalhousie looked like back in the day when the British came here to rejuvenate.

Ganji Pahari

Want a hill all to yourself with very few people in sight? Then head to Ganji Pahari, and yes, it literally translates to ‘Bald Hill’. The story behind this odd name is that the top patch of the hill barely has any trees covering it while the rest does, meaning that it’s bald. To an extent it does look like it went bald, but to each their own imagination!

The hike to Ganji Pahari is easy, and once you reach the top you’d be happy that you’re not wrestling with passing people or anything else to block your view. For the trek to this bald hill, we suggest beginning at Panchpula (a popular tourist halt in Dalhousie). Most of the treks begin from Panchpula itself so it would be a good point to keep as the base.

A hill station that sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet above sea level, Khajjjiar is covered by a dense cover of pine trees. You can also see the peaks of Dhauladhar mountain ranges in the distance from here. And sure, this may not be one of the places to visit in Dalhousie per se, but a trip to Dalhousie is incomplete without hopping into Khajjiar.

The best thing to do here after you consume the beauty of the place is to walk barefoot. There’s miles of green grass to walk on, just like on a golf course, but you’d even have the company of lush cedar and pine trees. Fresh mountain air, the clear blue sky and flat land makes Khajjiar a comfy little spot to have a picnic.

Did you know? – Envoy Willy P. Blazer, who was the Head of Chancery of Switzerland, was taken aback with the stunning beauty around him when he visited Khajjiar. So much so, that he placed a yellow sign indicating the hill station’s distance from the capital of Switzerland (Bern). The resemblance with Switzerland is believed to be uncanny so if you can’t make it there, you can still have a piece of its beauty in India.

Places To Visit Near Dalhousie — An Ideal One Day Itinerary

During my recent one-week trip across Chamba district, I happened to cover some of the best places to visit near Dalhousie including Jot Pass, Khajjiar, Kalatop and Dalhousie market, all in one day.

Though a little action-packed, now that I’m writing this blog I think it was, in fact, the best one day Dalhousie itinerary.

To start with, I want to tell you that I was staying at ETU homestay (Explore the Unexplored) in Bakloh — about  35 km from Dalhousie, or 25 km from Banikhet. If you are coming from Pathankot, you don’t even need to go to Dalhousie. Save yourself from the traffic.

For me, staying at Bakloh was, staying at someplace quieter, away from the crowded Dalhousie & still be able to explore the nearby tourist places. You can check their website if you want to stay with them. I will soon be writing more blogs about my one-week itinerary with them, and the places covered (including Bharmour and Kugti village).

Places To Visit Near Dalhousie

To start with, let me tell you that you can spend a month in this area and still not need to repeat a destination. From offbeat villages to frequented markets, there’s a lot to see and explore.

Other than the places I covered (Jot Pass, Kalatop, Dalhousie market and Khajjiar) I suggest you visit Dainkund Peak, St Francis Catholic Church, Panchpula, Ganji Pahadi, Satdhara Falls, Chamera Lake, Laxmi Narayan Temple, Bakrota Hills, Rang Mahal, and a lot more.

It is also possible to do a 2-day trip (or one-day if you want to hurry it up) to Sach Pass. Read this blog for Sach Pass itinerary .

One Day Dalhousie Itinerary

Here’s how it is going to look like in a map:

Stop 1: Jot Pass

Located at 2880 meters above the sea level Jot Pass is one of the popular places to visit near Dalhousie for locals. You come here any time of the year and you will find patches of snow on the top.

At a distance, and from the top point, you get sweeping panoramic views of the mighty Dhauladhar. The Dhauladhar peaks, again, will be snow-covered.

From Jot Pass, you will have to walk uphill 10-15 minutes to reach the top, located inside the Jot Nature Park. There’s an entry fee of 10 Rupees per person to access the Nature Park. Inside, you will come across some information about Himachal’s flora, fauna and wildlife.

If you don’t want to walk to the top, located inside Jot Nature Park, make a short halt at Jot Pass overlooking the Chuwadi Valley. From Jot Pass, Chuwadi Valley is located 23 kilometres away.

I would count Jot as one of the best offbeat travel destinations in Himachal Pradesh . If you want to visit someplace quieter than Chail or Shimla or Manali , Jot is the place to be.

Stop 2: Khajjiar

Khajjiar is often referred to as the Mini Switzerland of India, and in just once glance it is easy to understand why. A massive beautiful meadow surrounded by tall Deodar and Cedar trees, and in the middle, a small stream-fed lake — that’s what Khajjiar is, in nutshell.

The landscapes in Khajjiar are of the sorts of a typical Himachal. No wonder, it is one of the best places to visit near Dalhousie.

In Khajjiar you will also find a 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple dedicated to a serpent god. It is worth visiting the temple and studying its beautiful architecture.

The best time to visit Khajjiar will be during summer. There are places to eat near the lake, as well as a few homestays if you want to make Khajjiar your base for a few nights.

For photographers and Instagram-aficionados, the ideal time to visit will be during the morning when we have the soft morning light, but I understand it won’t be possible if we are doing the same one-day Dalhousie itinerary since we have an order to follow. Jot Pass, apparently, will take some time too.

It is possible to do horse-riding and zorbing there. We also have a paragliding site located 0.5km from Khajjiar, near the 82m tall Shiva Statue.

Stop 3: Kalatop

Kalatop is one of the popular places to visit near Dalhousie. It is most popular for those who want to experience snow-capped peaks of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges. The last point of Kalatop, where you can find a few places to eat and a few homestays to stay (for about 1000 Rupees a night), draws tourists from across India.

It is located approximately 12 km from Dalhousie and inside the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Tourists need to pay an entry fee for their car and motorcycle to access the wildlife area (at LakkadMandi).

Also called the Kalatop-Khajiar Sanctuary, it houses oaks, pines, rhododendron and deodar trees.

Since we got a little late to get to the top point, we couldn’t see much of the view (and it was quite foggy too) but the village and architecture was something worth witnessing.

The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the least explored areas in Dalhousie.

Stop 4: Dalhousie Market

For anyone visiting Dalhousie, visiting the market, particularly after sunset is a must. And that’s what I suggest you do too. During day-time, the mall road in Dalhousie can feel a little crowded to some people. But evenings are comparatively quieter. They are perfect.

Take a still across the mall-road and the Gandhi Square, buy souvenirs.

And in the end, conclude your day trip with a memorable dinner. I suggest you guys check out Cafe Dalhousie.

There is a lot more to see and do than what is suggested in this blog. To see all that Dalhousie has to offer you may need at least a week, but I understand not everyone has such a long time, hence this one day Dalhousie itinerary.

If you are a little short on time, just like I was, the four places mentioned above (Khajjiar, Kalatop, Jot and the Mall Road) make for the top places to see near Dalhousie. Most importantly, if you covered all these places, you won’t be doing more than 100km, which is a good thing for hurried tourists.

Again, I suggest you avoid staying in Dalhousie if you want to enjoy peaceful nights. I recommend Bakloh, and in Bakloh, Explore The Unexplored homestay. Alternatively, you can check out someplace in Banikhet.

At a distance of 20 km from Chamba, and 21 km from Dalhousie, Khajjiar is a beautiful hill station located in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Dalhousie is located at 2039 m and sprawls across five hills: Kathlog , Potreyn , Tehra , Bakrota , and Balun . The British acquired the area from the Rajas of Chamba and named it after Lord Dalhousie (then Viceroy of India).

Best Time to Visit Dalhousie

Summer (March-June): The best time to visit Dalhousie is during summer. You may experience snow during the early summer , go sightseeing , and enjoy the greenery simultaneously. The air temperature will be between 18-29 degrees Celsius . The weather of Dalhousie will be just perfect to travel .

NOTE: This is the peak season so, high hotel prices and crowd is common. Prepare well before going there.

Monsoon (July-September): The air temperature will be 11-23 degrees Celsius during the monsoon. Dalhousie doesn’t receive heavy rain showers as compared to other places in Himachal Pradesh. There is little or no risk of floods and landslides . But avoid if you want to explore without canceling your plans.

#1 Churches

The must-see beautiful churches of Dalhousie are St. Andrew’s Church , St. Patrick’s Church in Balun, St. John’s Church at Gandhi Chowk, and St. Francis’ Church at Subash Chowk.

Among them, the two most notable churches are St Francis’s Catholic Church at Subhash Chowk and St John’s Church (Protestant) at Gandhi Chowk. They are both small structures that stand out in the lush green . The priest of St John’s serves as the postmaster since there is no Protestant congregation currently in Dalhousie.

#2 Sabha Sadar Bazar

Sadar Bazar is where the majority of the residents live . The Bazar lost most of its glory and shops after the 1947 migration. Its tiered streets, unique tin-roofed multistory homes give it a unique character. Shops are located on the ground floor. At the end of the Bazar, you will find the Hindu Temple , Gurudwara , and Arya Samaj Mandir as well as the Mosque .

#3 The Mall

The only market in Dalhousie that allows you to shop and eat a wide variety of foods. Gandhi Chowk is the mall road in Dalhousie. On Gandhi Chowk, there is also a Tibetan Market .

Gandhi Chowk is the most popular attraction for Restaurants , Cafes , and Shopping .  After touring the nearby sightseeing sites, people come to this place in the evening . That’s why it is also crowded at night .

#4 Bakrota Hills

Bakrota or Bakrota hills  is located just 4 km from the Gandhi Chowk , Dalhousie. It is completely unspoiled . There is a 5 km walk through a protected rainforest area , with stunning views and absolutely no traffic . This is an area that must be visited during a Dalhousie visit. And visits after 7 PM are not recommended because of the Bears and Leopards.

#5 Subhash Baoli and Jandrighat Palace

Jandrighat Palace lies approximately 3 km from the GPO. It is surrounded by majestic trees and was named after Subhash Chandra Bose , who spent peaceful times as a mediator during 1937. Beautiful scenery can be found along the Bakrota hills’ western edge. The Raja of Chamba owns the Palace. Wild varieties of strawberries are also present along the route.

On the way is the popular spot called Subhash Baoli . It is a natural water spring . It is claimed that Netaji Subash Chander Bose spent many hours at this spot during his sojourn in Dalhousie.

#6 Panchpula and Satdara

It is a popular spot for picnicking by a stream . Basically, it is the combination of an inviting waterfall and a peaceful picnic spot . This place carries many adventures , like zipline , and Burma bridge , etc. There’s a Samadhi of Shahid Ajit Singh just near the Panchpula. He was Shahid Bhagat Singh’s uncle , who died in Dalhousie on August 15, 1947, when his dream of independence came true.

The seven springs at Satdara are located on the road to Punjpula. This spring’s water contains mica and other minerals that are well-known for their medicinal properties .

#7 Lakkar Mandi and Dainkund Peak

Lakkar Mandi is an important landmark along the Dalhousie–Chamba road through Khajjiar. A level walk leads towards Kalatop, while another track climbs to Dainkund Peak. There are some tea stalls and country stores .

Dainkund Peak, which is at 2745 mt is the highest peak in Dalhousie, is located 10 km from the GPO road. The tall peak offers a bird’s-eye view of the valleys as well as the three rivers namely Beas , Ravi , and Chenab . These rivers run their silvery ways down the plains.

#8 Kalatop National Forest Sanctuary

Kalatop Sanctuary was declared a game sanctuary in 1949. It is between Chamba and Dalhousie at the north-western end of the Dauladhar range . The sanctuary is home to about 15 villages . It is a wildlife sanctuary that houses the Himalayan black bear and barking deer .

The reserve covers an area totaling 3069 hectares . It is typical of the outer Himalayas because it has a steep terrain. It is drained from several tributaries to the Ravi River , which lies just to its north.

#9 Bara Pathar

Bara Pather Temple, a well-known temple in Dalhousie, attracts many visitors each day. It is just 4 km from Dalhousie, is on the route to Kalatop . It settles in the serene surroundings of Chamba Valley. And is dedicated to Bhulwani Mata .

Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

A fascinating city to wander around, stunning cathedrals, churches, and palaces lie side-by-side with bleak grey monuments and remains from the Soviet state. In addition to its plethora of historical and cultural tourist attractions, Moscow is home to world-class museums, theaters and art galleries.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
