Jungle Cruise at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom: Everything You Need to Know

There are few rides as iconic to Disney World as the Jungle Cruise. 

The riverboat adventure has been delighting guests since Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida first opened up its gates back in the 1970s!

Since then, the ride has only improved– and despite having one of the longest wait times in the Magic Kingdom, guests of the park continue to visit this ride on every trip. That’s thanks both to nostalgia, and the fact that no two rides are ever the same. 

Now, with the release of a major motion picture inspired by the ride, new and regular visitors will be flocking to visit! 

Before heading out to Magic Kingdom and hopping aboard, here’s everything you need to know.

Jungle Cruise is one of the original Magic Kingdom attractions, running since its opening in Disney World in 1971. 

The real OG Jungle Cruise opened at Disneyland in the 1950s, and versions of the ride exist in all Disney theme parks worldwide. 

The ride was originally inspired by a series of 1950s movies, including ‘The African Queen’ and the ‘True Life Adventures series.

Bill Evans was tasked with creating a jungle within the park on a budget. To achieve this, he used a mix of tropical plants and plants that appeared to be tropical (but were actually local) . 

He even used the trick of planting orange trees upside down, making the roots look like vines!

Marc David later made significant contributions to the design in later versions, including many of the scenes, present today. 

The ride’s early renditions were more of an experience at first, like visiting a zoo or a botanic garden. However, over time the ride has developed into a funny, lighthearted attraction, and as a result, has increased in popularity. 

A comedic script was added, the scenes became more humorous, and the guides were encouraged to have fun with the guests. You’ll now find them cracking jokes with guests, showing their personalities, and ad-libbing along the way!

Audio effects have been improved and modernized, the animatronics updated, new scenes added, and the jungle has grown and expanded throughout the years. 

In 2010, the jungle became a self-sustaining ecosystem, after 45 years of careful care and growth. The ride has also removed elements that were offensive to native cultures.

The Jungle Cruise story was expanded in 2015 with the opening of the Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant, Jungle Skipper Canteen. 

This introduced Dr. Albert Falls as the founder of Jungle Cruise in 1911. He then handed it over to his granddaughter Alberta Falls in the 1930s, where the story of the ride takes place. 

The ride is full of audio-animatronic characters– mostly jungle animals– such as ones found on an African safari. There are waterfalls, a temple to pass inside, and many other scenes along the way! 

All of the scenes can be experienced from within your boat, making you feel as if you’re an explorer from the thirties. 

The ride is suitable for all ages and very accessible to those with disabilities. It’s a smooth, slow ride, but there’s never a dull moment thanks to the story unfolding around you and your skipper’s commentary.

‘Jungle Cruise’ is the latest in a long line of movies inspired by rides at Disney theme parks, the most notable being Pirates of the Caribbean. The 2021 film starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt and followed the general theme of the ride. 

The Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise is located in Adventureland. 

You can find it by going to the hub and taking the first left to Adventureland. After passing shops, restaurants, and the Swiss Family Treehouse, you’ll see the Magic Carpets of Aladdin. 

From there, look to your left and you should see the entrance to Jungle Cruise! 

Queue  

The queue has four areas that can be opened up, depending on the size of the line. The average wait time for the ride is about an hour, one of the longest at the park. 

It can get pretty hot waiting in the queue on a summer’s day, so beware if you have anyone in your party that may struggle with this. Don’t forget your water bottle, sunscreen, and hat!

As you wait in line to enter the line, it’ll feel like you’re in a colonial outpost. You’ll pass artifacts, photos, and tools from the theme and period of the ride to get you in the right headspace. 

Your boat will pull up with your guide at the helm when it’s your turn. There are 15 boats in rotation, each with its memorable name (like Wamba Wanda ). 

Jungle Cruise FastPass+

FastPass+ was discontinued and replaced with Disney Genie in 2021. 

However, due to public outcry, it was announced in 2022 that FastPass would be coming back to the parks. At this point, it doesn’t appear to have been reinstated just yet.

Currently, you can use the Disney Genie service to get you through the queues faster with Lightning Lane entrances. However, Genie+ can no longer be pre-purchased– though you can still purchase through the app when you visit the park.

The ride has a long wooden bench on each side of the boat, so guests face each other and sit side by side. 

The bench doesn’t have a back, so if you lean back you’ll find yourself against the slightly curved side of the boat. 

Plexiglass dividers are placed between sections of the bench, allowing four or five people to fit within a section. If you have small children, you may be able to squeeze a couple more in. 

Once you step onto the boat, the skipper will welcome you and you’ll set sail down the river. 

You’ll encounter giant butterflies, Inspiration Falls, a beach shop called “Boats, Baits, and Bites”, an African rock python, and a Gorilla-raided camp– all before you head down the Nile River. 

In this new area, you’ll find African Elephants along with many other animals. You’ll pass a zebra watching a lion eat a member of its pack, and a group of lost safari goers hanging from a long pole, avoiding a black Rhino. 

After passing gaters, waterfalls, and a plane crash, the boat is threatened by angry hippos. Thankfully, the skipper will frighten them off. After seeing chimps raid a ship, it’s off to the next area! 

There, you’ll find yourself sailing into a temple damaged by an earthquake. Exotic animals like peacocks and a Bengal Tiger await! The ride will end just as you narrowly avoid being sprayed by a group of Indian Elephants. 

While the ride is quite cruisy, the fun of Jungle Cruise lies with the skipper. There is a script, but most skippers will bring their own flare to the show– keeping guests laughing and the energy high. 

The ride duration is about nine minutes long. 

Jungle Skipper Canteen

After experiencing the ride, consider continuing the adventure by stopping at Jungle Skipper Canteen. 

Here you can have a meal inspired by African, Latin, or Asian cuisine. Try Skipper Dan’s Dan Dan Noodles, “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork, or Panna-Connie’s Congo Lime Delight. 

There’s an extensive kids’ menu with menu items such as Junior Skip’s Macaroni & Cheese, or Chef Tandaji’s Crispy Chicken. 

You’ll also find an extensive allergy-free menu here (as is the case throughout much of the Magic Kingdom), with allergy-free choices on apps, kids’ meals, entrees, and desserts. 

Feeling a little parched? Choose from the selection of fun tropical cocktails, as well as their large selection of beer and wine!

Two of the boats, Bomokandi Bertha and Wamba Wanda, have wheelchair-accessible lifts. Most wheelchairs, including motorized and some ECVs, can be accommodated by these boats. 

Guests in wheelchairs can choose to board the boat without their chair if able, leaving the chair at the dock. Alternatively, they can wait until one of the accessible boats arrives.

There are days when a sign language interpreter and Disney’s Handheld Devices are available. 

These feature Assistive Listening, which will amplify the sound through either headphones or an induction loop. Handheld Captioning is also available on these devices, displaying on-screen text.

Disney’s Handheld Devices are available for a fully-refundable $25 daily deposit at Guest Relations. Devices are on a first-come, first-served basis, and they recommend that you bring your own headphones or an induction loop for use.

All guests should take care as they step down onto the boat from the dock, as it can bob and lean slightly while boarding. The skipper or ride assistant can offer a hand if needed.

There are periods of darkness, and it’s possible to get damp from the mist near the waterfalls. 

There is an instance of gunfire sound effects, but guests can request that it’s not played if this will trouble someone at the party. 

Guests must remain seated at all times, including small children. The boat will bob some, and sea sickness is possible, but it is generally a pretty smooth ride. 

There is no age or height restriction. Babies and toddlers can ride on their parent’s laps or in strollers. 

Children under the age of 7 will need to be accompanied by someone at least 14 years of age.  

Jungle Cruise closes during inclement weather, as most of the attraction takes place outdoors. 

How long is the Jungle Cruise ride at Magic Kingdom?

The entire ride lasts for just over nine minutes. 

How long does the Jungle Cruise line take?

The average wait time is about one hour. It’s a good idea to get to this ride as soon as the gates open to avoid a long queue. 

During very hot days, the line can get uncomfortable and is best avoided if you are sensitive to this. 

What do you do on the Jungle Cruise?

Guests ride along on a river boat with a skipper at the helm and explore various locations. You’ll see plenty of animals up to no good, and people in plenty of trouble! 

The whole experience is fun and comical and suitable for the whole family. 

Is Jungle Cruise a good ride at Disney?

This ride is a classic, and it’s only been made better over the years. It’s great for children and toddlers, as there are no age or height restrictions. 

It’s a slow and steady ride, so its movement is not frightening. However, some young or sensitive children could be startled in the dark temple with snakes present, or by the gunshot sound effect. 

When is the best time to ride Jungle Cruise?

Surprisingly, Jungle Cruise is a great ride at night! You can still see everything, and it looks even more realistic. Some riders report that the skippers tend to have more fun during sundown.

Christmas is another fun time to ride Jungle Cruise– or “ Jingle Cruise” , as it’s called– as it gets a makeover for the season and a snowman attraction is added. 

The script even gets a rewrite, so it’s quite a different experience if you’ve already seen the original version!

Who is Jungle Cruise for?

Jungle Cruise is a blast for children but is also enjoyed by the young-at-heart. Some adults may find themselves rolling their eyes at their skipper’s cheesy lines, but it’s all part of the charm. 

The Jungle Cruise is a delightful ride for the ages of 1 to 100. 

Disney has created a fully immersive experience where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. 

They have taken careful measures to create a living jungle, keep the ride up-to-date, make it appealing to all– and have even hired slapstick skippers to keep you laughing! 

Whether it’s your first or hundredth time on Jungle Cruise, it’s always worth a visit.

Complete Guide to Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom

Grab your suitcase and get ready to set sail on an adventure-filled river tour. Jungle Cruise is one of several fan-favorite classic attractions remaining at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

This water safari is led by experienced Skippers, who navigate your boat through the rivers of Asia, Africa, and South America. Your pun-filled guides will not only make you laugh ’till you cry, but will also make sure you get up close and personal with the eighth wonder of the world — the backside of water!

Description: Jungle Cruise is a river boat ride where animatronic animals and dad jokes abound. Every Jungle Cruise Skipper has their own unique “routine”, so every ride is a little bit different. How to Ride Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise has a Standby Line and Lightning Lane. There is no  Single Rider Line .

The Standby Line for Jungle Cruise is typically the lowest first thing in the morning and at the end of the evening. The middle of the day will see the longest lines with sustained wait times of over 60 minutes.

Jungle Cruise is not available during Early Theme Park Entry or Extended Evening Hours . So, if this ride is a priority for you, planning accordingly is a must.

D o I need to use Genie+ at Jungle Cruise?

Jungle Cruise is available with Genie+  and we highly recommend using it at this attraction.

Aside from Peter Pan’s Flight , the Jungle Cruise is the second most booked ride on Genie+ at the Magic Kingdom. It’s a highly-popular ride that many park guests make a must-do during their park day. Unless you hop on this ride first thing, you should plan to reserve a Genie+ time for later in the day.

Rider Switch/Child Swap

Jungle Cruise is for all ages and heights. Therefore, Rider Switch , the system that allows guests with small children to take turns riding bigger rides, while another person/people wait with the little one, is not offered for Jungle Cruise.

What to Expect When You Ride

The Jungle Cruise queue is completely outdoors, with most of the line covered from the sun. While the ride doesn’t have an interactive queue like many other attractions, there are plenty of sights and sounds to enjoy.

You will find the queue decorated with prior passenger cruise logs and journals to read over. Also as you get closer to the loading station you can watch the tour boats pulling into and leaving the loading dock.

The music in the queue is also fun, including listening to what the announcer has to say.

Ride Vehicles

The ride vehicles for Jungle Cruise are small river boats. There is seating around the entire interior of the boat for guests to sit. Each boat can accompany approximately 30 guests.

There is a small 6 inch gap you must step over and down into the boat. Most guests are able to board with little to no help. There is a pole to grab on to help stabilize your boarding process in addition to Cast Members who will assist guests as needed.

You will ride in the tour boat with other groups, but your party will always be seated together next to — or at least near to one another.

There are no safety restraints, seat belts or life vests. You simply sit down and ride around inside the boat.

Accessibility Information

Guests may remain in their wheelchair/ECV while on the Jungle Cruise. A select number of boats are wheelchair accessible and have space for a single wheelchair. This includes manual, power, or ECV.

The majority of wheelchair sizes have no problem fitting on the boats. There is a separate wheelchair accessible entrance where your party can wait to board their boat.

You’ll want to speak with a Cast Member at the attraction entrance (at the top of the path that leads to the attraction) for details and directions.

Sign language interpretation and assistive listening are also offered on the Jungle Cruise ride on certain days. To obtain a schedule listing exact days and times, visit Guest Relations in the park.

Motion Sickness

Jungle Cruise’s boats are slow-moving and don’t have any fast turns, so motion sickness seems very unlikely. That said, you are riding in a boat on the water. Feel free to check out our guide on motion sickness  that’s filled with additional information and tips.

On The Ride

Ride spoilers ahead!

Prepare to sail away on an adventure of a lifetime as your cruise boat arrives into the loading dock. After some brief safety guidelines and a clear to go, your Skipper starts the tour sailing your cruise boat away from the dock and into the jungle.

Your first cruise stop in the jungle will be the Amazon rainforest where it rains 365 days a year. Here you will see beautiful butterflies with an impressive wingspan and the rushing waters of Inspiration Falls.

Next the tour will embark to the depths of Africa on the Congo River. You will pass by your Skippers pet python snake and a camp being broken down by Gorillas.

Cruising over to Egypt your Skipper will take you to the infamous Nile River which spans about 4,000 miles. Capture photos of the African bull elephants among the boulders. Long neck cheetahs, zebras, giraffes and lions are seen resting amongst one another. A rhinoceros is seen trying to make his point, chasing a group of explorers up a pole.

Watch out for danger as you enter crocodile country. Sail past the impressive Schweitzer falls which is named after the famous Dr. Albert Falls.

You will enter a hippo pool which will require some expert navigation from your Skipper as you see another tour cruise boat that did not fare so well going through them. A family of chimpanzees is seen taking over another tour cruise boat.

Next up is what everyone came to see, the 8th wonder of the world — the backside of water!

Prepare for dark encounters as your cruise boat enters the Mekong River in the heart of Cambodia. Your Skipper will take you through an Asian jungle shrine where you will pass a 500 pound tiger, several cobra snakes, giant spiders, shiny gold artifacts, and Buddha statues.

As you exit the tunnel you will find yourself in the middle of an Indian elephant bathing pool. Feel free to take as many pictures as you like. Beware — these elephants have been known to spray the boat, so watch out!

There’s no visit to the jungle complete without a stop to see Trader Sam’s gift shop.

As your tour boat approaches the dock again wait on your Skipper to give the word to gather all your belongings and disembark.

Trust us when we say to fully experience this ride, you need to try it yourself because the Skippers add a whole new level to each attraction scene. Their puns and jokes are the point of the cruise.

Is Jungle Cruise Kid-Friendly?

Overall, Jungle Cruise is very kid-friendly, as all ages and heights are permitted to board and ride.

However, keep in mind some of the animals on the cruise are very realistic and may scare little ones. There is also a short scene in which the boat rides through a very dark, almost pitch-black cave with several animatronic snakes and tigers that could be scary for children.

Anyone riding with kids may want to tell them the animals aren’t real prior to riding.

Kids are also required to remain seated completely during the entire tour. There is no exchanging of kids from one parent to another while the ride is in motion. Due to the nature of this ride being open and on the water, the Skippers are very strict about this.

Strollers are not permitted on the Jungle Cruise boats. They can be left in the designated area near the attraction entrance or with a non-rider.

Jungle Cruise was one of the original attractions ready in 1971 on Magic Kingdom’s opening day. It was also an opening day attraction at Disneyland Park in California back in 1955.

Ironically, before becoming known for its laughs and silly jokes, the attraction as a whole was initially more of a serious tone with only a few jokes inserted here and there.

The original script for Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise was written by Winston Hibler and inspired by Disney’s True-Life Adventure African Lion film. This gave the ride its more serious and educational tone, but that all changed in the ’60s when Imagineer Marc Davis took over and turned the ride into what many know and love today.

During the holidays, Jungle Cruise receives a holiday overlay and becomes the “Jingle Cruise.” The ride format stays basically the same with the addition of fun holiday-themed jokes and pretty seasonal decorations.

Believe it or not, but the holiday Jingle Cruise actually hasn’t been around that long — only since 2013!

In January 2021, Disney announced that some much-needed changes were coming to the Jungle Cruise on both coasts. Those updates are now complete.

Some of the enhancements included incorporating an animatronic skipper, new characters (like Alberta Falls), adding new jokes (don’t worry, many of the classics remain), and freshening up the story by adding chimpanzees, new explorers being chased up the pole, and making the Skippers more of a focus.

Here was the concept art for these updates that were previously shared by Disney:

Most importantly, the outdated depictions and problematic scenes have been removed .

As Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Portfolio Executive Chris Beatty told D23, “This is not a re-envisioning of the entire attraction. It’s the Jungle Cruise you know and love, with the skippers still leading the way, and at the same time, we’re addressing the negative depictions of ‘natives.'”

This also means the removal of Trader Sam from the final scene of the ride. But he isn’t totally gone; Trader Sam is still part of the attraction in a unique way.

The final scene features a Lost & Found Gift Shop with a sign indicating that it is managed by Trader Sam (in place of the Trader Sam animatronic). As stated by Disney, “But, while he’s out lost and finding some new inventory, it’s the animals that get the last laugh!”

Other Fun Details

• Rumor has it that when you enter the hippo pool, you’ll see the back half of a plane on the right, and, apparently, the front half was used in the Casablanca scene in the now-permanently closed Great Movie Ride.
• The Jungle Cruise is not based on a movie, but it did inspire one. The new live-action Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt was released on July 30, 2021 giving nod to this classic attraction.
• Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen is a nearby Table Service restaurant themed after the Jungle Cruise. It has a unique menu, serves alcohol, and is just as fun as the attraction. Reservations are recommended.

Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise is an outdoor boat cruise through Disney's man-made jungle waterways. You'll encounter animatronic elephants, lions, rhinos and hippos in addition to the hostile natives. 

Your boat tour through the jungle will be on one of 15 cruise boats with your very own skipper who will tell jokes throughout your tour (Note: if you go on the Jungle Cruise more than once its highly likely you'll hear the same 'jokes' - they have used them for years). 

The tour guides are what make this attraction so fun with their witty banter with guests whilst attempting to stear the boat around the narrow river, being careful not to get you soaked at the waterfall!

Towards the end of the ride you pass through a dark cambodian temple where tigers watch over the ancient treasures. When you emerge you head back to civilisation, hopefully not too scared or wet!

Jungle Cruise Ride Tips

In one part of the ride you'll notice what appears to be a downed airplane. The other half of this airplane can be found in The Great Movie Ride in Hollywood Studios, it is used for the Casablanca scene!

Jungle Cruise is an outdoor group boat ride through some of the world’s best-known simulated tropical waterways. You’ll pass through forest and jungle populated entirely by animatronic animals.

Jungle Cruise was the park’s signature ride when it opened at Disneyland. With the advent of modern, highly themed, real zoo environments such as Animal Kingdom, the Magic Kingdom’s version would surely have faded into obscurity were it not for one thing: The skippers tell jokes. OK, jokes is a stretch—the skippers do the cheesiest, most groan-inducing stand-up you’ve ever heard. If you dig that sort of thing, it’s glorious.

The best Jungle Cruise experience we’ve ever had began with all the passengers agreeing beforehand to laugh enthusiastically at whatever jokes we heard. It took about two puns for the skipper to catch on and play along. The ride ended with us chanting the skipper’s name during thunderous applause, to which the skipper said, “Is this what unconditional love feels like? Take that, Mom and Dad!”

One of the highlights of the Jungle Cruise is the trek through the temple ruins, which features an elaborate temple facade and a statue of a Hindu deity. The skipper will point out the temple’s many features, including a hidden treasure trove and a “headhunters’ camp” that’s complete with shrunken heads on display.

Is Disney World’s Jungle Cruise closing? Here’s what to know before your next trip to Magic Kingdom

Planning a trip to see the 8th Wonder of the World? You might want to hold off until the holiday season.

Disney World announced that its Jungle Cruise attraction at Magic Kingdom will be closed because of refurbishments starting Aug. 26.

Why is Jungle Cruise closed at Disney World in Orlando?

The exact reasons for the refurbishment has not been released. WDW Magic does share that several permits were recently filed for the attraction, including one with contractor Underwater Engineering Services Inc.

Theme parks fans know the ride has gone through different "reimaginings," adding new animatronics and details to its backstory. It has not been closed to refurbishment since 2017.

When will Jungle Cruise reopen at Disney World in Orlando?

While the company has not announced a specific reopening date, it has shared on its website that the attraction is scheduled to reopen before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

However, the ride has been removed from the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party attraction lists.

For those who already have a trip to Disney's Magic Kingdom set for fall 2024, you can still get your Jungle Cruise fix.

Disney turned its iconic rides into a movie in 2021, joining the ranks of "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Haunted Mansion" and "Tower of Terror."

Set in 1917 during World War I , USA TODAY wrote that the Jungle Cruise movie stars Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton, a British botanist in search of a legendary ancient tree that has petals with amazing healing properties and the potential to change medicine forever. She needs a way to get to it, though, and she heads down to South America where she meets Frank Wolff (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), a financially strapped riverboat captain who gives tourists jungle rides chock full of groan-worthy jokes and the occasional factoid.

Lily hires Frank and set sail in his dilapidated vessel to find their treasure, dealing with pesky natives, rocky waterfalls and other various obstacles on the way. 

The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Edgar Ramírez and Jack Whitehall.

What other ride, attraction closures are at Disney World resorts in Orlando?

As of July 15, here are the refurbishment closures announced for Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida:

Disney Tourist Blog also notes that permits have been filed for Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom, saying it's an "open secret that the roller coaster is closing for roughly one-year." There has not been any announcements from Disney World.

Jungle Cruise Closing for Post-Summer Project

We’ve been warning you that Walt Disney World is likely going to accelerate several simultaneous ride refurbishments and reimaginings, and now there’s another major project on the calendar for the post-summer season in Magic Kingdom. This share dates & details of the Jungle Cruise closure, plus what else to expect around the same timeframe in Magic Kingdom. ( Updated August 9, 2024 .)

Let’s start with the pertinent details. Walt Disney World has quietly added a closure of Jungle Cruise to the refurbishment calendar that’s slated to start on August 26, 2024. Although that’s technically still summer per the Farmer’s Almanac or season scientists or whatever, Walt Disney World’s summer essentially ends once the calendar turns to August. (I’d say the second week of August, if we want to get technical. Some point to Labor Day, but summer is long over by then–that’s Halloween season!)

UPDATE: According to a calendar update in the My Disney Experience App, Jungle Cruise is set to reopen on October 18, 2024. This is not yet reflected on the attraction page or calendar of the official website, but that’s not cause for alarm. For some reason, the Disneyworld.com calendar doesn’t go as far out as the app-based calendar, so this is par for the course.

The official attraction page still has the following statement: “Beginning August 26, 2024, Jungle Cruise will temporarily close for refurbishment. The attraction is scheduled to reopen for Guests before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World.”

Jungle Cruise had been removed from both the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party attraction lists, but Jingle Cruise is still listed as an attraction overlay for the Christmas season. It’s our expectation that Jungle/Jingle Cruise will be open for both MNSSHP and MVMCP starting October 18, 2024 and all parties thereafter–but this is not yet confirmed.

As you might recall, Jungle Cruise was reimagined a few years ago . In case not, the attraction remained open at Magic Kingdom during the reimagining, as Imagineering utilized a “phased approach” to the project. Basically, they removed and installed a bunch of stuff overnight–mostly monkeys.

The way the Jungle Cruise’s scenes are staged makes it more conducive to changes that can be accomplished overnight or in the span of a day or two. This is exactly how the annual Jingle Cruise overlay for Christmas works. It also helped, I guess, that a lot of “changes” to the Jungle Cruise were copious amounts of backstory and lore that were added for no particular purpose. Doesn’t take much doing to “install” backstory.

From my perspective, the end result with Jungle Cruise reimagining was a positive one. Those backstory details are peppered around the queue, and there for the discovery of guests. That’s an asset, as it gives guests something to engage in that previously basic and sometimes very long standby line.

You can uncover nuggets of information that illuminate and connect to other adventurous experiences, but are not the least bit necessary to enjoying the attraction. Or not. You can ignore them and don’t lose anything from the ride-through experience. The jokes are still funny (or not) and the animals are still there. Enjoyment doesn’t hinge on the backstory.

As for the ride itself, the big change to Jungle Cruise is that they added a plethora of primates. It might as well be called Jungle Cruise: Monkey Madness. I’m sorry, but if you dislike that, you’re distinctly unpatriotic. Monkeys doing ape antics are awesome, and that’s just a fact. For all of the hand-wringing about changing Jungle Cruise, the end result is basically just that–more monkeys. Other stuff did change for ‘contemporary audiences,’ but the big discernible thing is the monkeys. It was a big win for lovers of simian shenanigans, which should be everyone.

Given all of the changes that already occurred, I wouldn’t expect much to change with the show scenes in Jungle Cruise. They might be spruced up or enhanced in small ways with the addition of Easter Eggs and that sorta thing, but we probably aren’t getting project mapping or special night lighting a la the reimaging at Tokyo Disneyland from several years ago.

It’s our understanding that this is a routine refurbishment rather than a reimagining, with work needing to be done on underwater infrastructure as well as some of the facades and other elements of the attraction. I know that’s not as sexy or exciting as reimaginings, but this type of work is also very necessary to ensure reliability and longevity. (And who knows–maybe they’ll install a nicer lighting package–Jungle Cruise could use one!)

Now let’s turn to the other projects in Magic Kingdom and how these pieces of the puzzle fit together. As covered in our latest update to Magic Kingdom Ride Refurbishment Rumors Realities , Peter Pan’s Flight is now closed for refurbishment through August 20, 2024. The attraction is currently expected to reopen on August 21, 2024.

That was a very last-minute addition to the closure calendar by Walt Disney World standards, but construction permits for the work were filed two months before the closure was added to the calendar. Our suspicion was and is that Walt Disney World was waiting for other pieces of the puzzle–the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closure timeline as well as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opening and operating reliability–and was backed into this corner by those timeframes.

Speaking of which, there’s also a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closure on the horizon. This has not been acknowledged by the company–meaning it’s neither announced nor added to the official calendar–but it is happening. Permits have been filed and it’s an open secret that the roller coaster is closing for roughly one-year.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad needs a significant refurbishment involving major work on the ride system and retracking. This long-planned project is viewed as preventative work that’s crucial to extend the useful life of the roller coaster, ensuring the ride’s longevity and operational status for decades to come. But unlike Jungle Cruise, we also expect some big “plussings” to occur to Big Thunder.

With the Jungle Cruise closure, we start seeing how these pieces of the puzzle fit together. Peter Pan’s Flight reopens, Jungle Cruise closes. Jungle Cruise reopens and, presumably, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad goes down for its long closure. As mentioned before, I wouldn’t be surprised if Walt Disney World tries to squeeze as many necessary closures in front of the the BTMRR closure as possible to avoid having other key attractions down during peak dates of the Big Thunder project.

I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of overlap between the Jungle Cruise and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishments. September is historically the off-season, although the last couple of weeks will probably see spikes because of the ticket deals ending. (The thing is, whoever is doing Magic Kingdom scheduling probably is oblivious to that.)

Given all of this, I think it’s possible that BTMRR closes around mid-September and Jungle Cruise does not reopen until after that. It really depends upon how long each project is expected to take, and when Walt Disney World wants both operational.

This also explains Walt Disney World’s approach with Lightning Lane Multi Passes. I thought it was kind of weird that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was a top tier selection, but now that kind of makes sense. There’s always going to be one tier 1 ride out of commission for the next year.

Regardless, this makes testing Lightning Lane Multi Pass in Magic Kingdom kind of a lost cause until Jungle Cruise reopens, as ‘results’ in late July through August won’t be representative of the following year when BTMRR is down. (Not only that, but Party Season throws a monkey wrench into things, anyway, so whatever you see for the remainder of this year won’t apply to 2025, anyway.)

Ultimately, it’s interesting that Peter Pan’s Flight, Jungle Cruise, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will all go down for extended closures (of varying degrees) in the coming months. As we’ve been saying for months now, we’d expect more  reimaginings and refurbishments of this nature for a couple of reasons.

The first is that there was a lot of deferred maintenance and proportionately fewer closures in the last few years due to pent-up demand and budget cuts. So several attractions are overdue for refurbishments and will probably get them later this year or in 2025.

Second, the money spigot is about to be turned on for Parks & Resorts, allowing for more projects of this nature to ( finally! ) happen. Sure, it’s not as exciting as brand-new attractions–and many of you may lament more rides being closed during your vacation–but refurbishments are very much a necessity for maintaining appropriate attraction standards and ensuring that breakdowns don’t continue to happen at a more frequent rate. So here’s hoping we see more on this front!

From my perspective, it was the deferred maintenance that was bad–not the current and upcoming closures. Walt Disney World has extensive downtime and reliability woes in the last couple of years, and this is precisely why. That absolutely needs to be addressed, and this is the way that happens.

I’m somewhat sympathetic to Walt Disney World fan complaints about ride closures. It sucks when it happens on your trip, especially these closures that aren’t added to the schedule until the last minute. If you ask me, the announcement protocol is what needs to change, so people can plan accordingly, not the number of closures. (If anything, there need to be even more simultaneous refurbishments!)

I also know that Walt Disney World fans envy Tokyo Disney Resort and often ask why our parks can’t be like those, or why Disney doesn’t do things like OLC. American fans cannot have it both ways–we can’t expect maintenance standards of Tokyo Disney Resort… without the closure calendar of Tokyo Disney Resort . That’s how maintenance gets done!

The pictures and descriptions of the new Cars ride sure look and sound like a reimagined Big Thunder.

So how much notice will we get for BTMRR going down? I’m picking lightning lanes in a couple weeks and I don’t want to grab and early time slot just to lose it later.

It seems so silly that they can’t commit to a date.

So, now with this update, it seems less likely that Thunder Mountain will close this year?

Everything I’ve heard suggest BTMRR is still going down this off-season (so August or September), but that the Magic Kingdom refurbishment situation is “fluid.”

Still my understanding that more is to come, but those projects might slip into 2025.

I haven’t seen if they filed any permits, but might this also be for prep work for the proposed expansion (rumored to be Moana) of Adventureland south of the Pirates building? The walkway to reach the expansion pad would have to pass between Pirates and the Amazon area/ Inspiration Falls/bait and boat scene of the Jungle Cruise.

I suppose we’ll find out in a few weeks at D23.

Any idea how Jungle Cruise being closed affects Keys to the Kingdom Tour? Do they replace with another ride or just skip this portion of the tour?

I hope they can upgrade the JC boat speakers/microphones while they’re at it! This is my husband’s favorite attraction (yes, really) and the last time we rode, after a 45 minute wait, we couldn’t hear half of the skipper’s jokes because the audio equipment was so terrible. He was so disappointed.

I agree! We have stopped bothering to ride because we can’t understand much of what is being said. Our kid had no idea what was being said and kept asking what was going on. The audio situation in the boats should be remedied, especially considering how long people wait for this.

Hi Tom! It really sucks when major attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad shut down for such a long period. This will be our first trip in nearly 10 years and you should be more than « somewhat sympathetic » because it’s not everyone who can afford to be at Walt Disney World very often… With that said, we really appreciate your work. Refurbishments have to happen sometime, otherwise standards start slipping and Disney isn’t Disney. Every single day, there’s a huge number of one-and-done visitors at Walt Disney World. There’s no possible way to reconcile those things. Attractions will always be down during someone’s first or infrequent trip. So what I mean with the ‘somewhat sympathetic’ line is that yes, it sucks. But it’s also unavoidable–the nature of the beast. On the one hand, we’ve been “lucky” with not many refurbs in the last few years…but unlikely that maintenance standards have slipped. It’s a double-edged sword.

Again, I really think Walt Disney World should do a better job of communicating closures well in advance–we’re talking 6+ months, ideally.

To Tom’s point, we didn’t get to go on Indiana Jones last summer in DL because it was down the only day we were there. Even if there isn’t a planned closure, you may still not be able to ride because maintenance issues of these rides are a serious issue. I’m very sympathetic, Big Thunder is my favourite ride, and I likely won’t be able to ride the next time I’m there. But if it’s not running because the ride is down because it’s being held together with gum and tape I also can’t ride it.

I am sympathetic to you but also ultimately agree with Tom’s point. And this is as someone who has been on the unlucky end of the maintenance schedules.

I have been to Disneyland exactly once, didn’t get to go on Indiana Jones Adventure (the rides pretty much every site mentions as a highlight and that doesn’t exist at Disney World) because of refurbishment. During our only visit to Disneyland Paris, both Big Thunder (which looked awesome) and it’s a small world were down for the entire year.

The good news is I had a fabulous time at both resorts despite the closures; my memories of both and my feeling while there was overwhelmingly positive. For me at least, knowing beforehand gave me time to be bummed ahead of arrival so that when I arrived, I could focus on everything I did get to do.

Loading people with assistive needs onto Jungle Cruise feels like it makes that ride’s throughput MUCH slower. Extra service is required to position a ramp, wheel the guests onto a special boat, tie them in their assistive device down so they don’t slide around the deck, then later reverse all the steps to unload. Meanwhile, most of the queue is watching and presumably hoping they load/unload the non-themed assistive device as fast as possible. It’s more “public transit bus” in those moments, than it is “jungle cruise”. So anything that helps that ride become faster and/or more reliable seems worthwhile. I wasn’t expecting such a long wait, given the line size, but there happened to be a bunch of families in line with grandmas. Maybe I’m just not enough into tryout-level comedians, but I don’t feel the typical guest’s desire for repeat visits to the JCruise. Once was definitely enough.

Yeah, I think a lot of the Jungle Cruise’s increased “popularity” (air quotes) in the post-reopening period is less about the boost from the reimagining and more the result of decreased efficiency.

What you mention is one thing, but the attraction just isn’t dispatching as many boats as it used to. Someone sent me an ops guide for Jungle Cruise and it was quite illuminating as to just how inefficient the ride has become in actuality versus theoretically.

Can monkey’s even do ape antics? Wouldn’t that make them monkey antics? Although I think there are Chimpanzees in the ride and they are definitely apes. (I know that’s not the gist of the post, but not I’m stuck thinking about how many apes vs. monkeys are on the Jungle cruise…)

During the Jungle Cruise rehab, I’d love to see WDI devote it’s resources to the one element that has been ignored since 1955- THE SEATS! I’ve always wondered why guests are forced to sit facing each other, along the perimeter, rather than facing forward. We are paying to see the activity along the shore. Why do we hace to sit sideways? Every other boat ride, such as Oirates and small world, has forward-sitting seats. Not only would guests finally see what’s going around them, but the process of loading and purging at the dock would be radically accelerated! Thus, hourly capacity rises and wait times shrink!

As an electrical engineer and Wannabe Imagineer who knows people in my field working on the rides in Orlando, rides like Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain are a torture test for the worst possible conditions to keep electronic controlled mechanical hardware working reliable for millions of visitors a year. And for anyone who tries to make the case that the rides have become less reliable, I would point them at the stories of park operations managers sending out employees to manually move the animals on Jungle Cruise whenever Walt decided to take a ride, not to mention the scads of other ride issues that plagued Disneyland in the supposed golden years.

In Florida, not only do they have to contend with ~20,000 riders a day, but that have to do it 7 days a week in what I consider to be the worst climate on the planet: central Florida, where the humidity in the summer is usually 90+ if not higher while temperatures are 95F and up. Can you imagine how hard it is to convince trained engineers who could be working a nice, cushy 9-5 job in air conditioning to work the night shift tracking down a tricky electrical or mechanical problems and never get to see their families?

Thanks for pointing out the necessity and upside for these planned reburbishments. Keeping these rides looking good and working every day is an incredible feat.

While I can appreciate the general gist of your sentiment that Disney fans view the past through rose-colored glasses, ride reliability as measured by daily downtime has become measurably worse than it was in 2018 or 2019–not some date back decades ago (for which we wouldn’t even have data anyway).

I’m actually fairly forgiving of a lot of this! A lot of maintenance was deferred for good (or at least justifiable) reason. Disney–both coasts–lost a *lot* of institutional knowledge during the closure thanks to early retirements. That made preventative maintenance and repairs more difficult. A lot of construction projects suffered delays due to staffing shortages, supply chain disruptions–or both! So that probably discouraged Disney from doing more refurbishments, knowing that no matter what the timeline was, it could be delayed.

Walt Disney World Resort is bringing back a recently shuttered attraction after an extended overhaul. This is set to cause a stir amongst the fanbase, as many have called it a “historically racist” attraction. Let’s see what your thoughts are on this.

A ‘Foundationally Racist” Disney Attraction To Make Its Return After Extended Overhaul

The Walt Disney Company recently introduced a new attraction at Magic Kingdom Park, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which officially opened on June 28, 2024. This launch followed previews for cast members and Annual Passholders. The addition replaces Splash Mountain, a change that has sparked criticism from some fans who claim it reflects Disney’s focus on diversity and inclusion at the expense of traditional storytelling.

This sentiment has extended beyond the theme parks, affecting the company’s studio output. Although Disney has not confirmed these allegations, CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the importance of prioritizing storytelling while acknowledging the value of messaging. Disney World and other Central Florida theme parks have undergone numerous updates to address historical issues and promote inclusivity.

Among these attractions is the Jungle Cruise , a historic ride that has been part of Walt Disney World since its opening day 52 years ago. Situated in Adventureland alongside notable attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, the Jungle Cruise offers guests a humorous and engaging journey through a jungle guided by a skipper who shares entertaining stories about the landscape and its inhabitants.

According to the latest refurbishment schedule, the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom will reopen on October 18, 2024, following an extended closure . The popular attraction will be out of service from August 26, 2024, through October 17, 2024.

During this period, no significant changes to the show are anticipated, although recent permits have been filed with contractor Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. for various updates.

Despite recent enhancements to the Jungle Cruise’s scenes, the ride has not been refurbished significantly since 2017. In addition to the Jungle Cruise closure, Big Thunder Mountain is expected to soon close for refurbishment, potentially leaving the Magic Kingdom without two of its major high-capacity attractions in September. The dates for Big Thunder Mountain’s closure have not yet been announced.

In 2021, The Walt Disney Company announced plans to revamp Jungle Cruise to address its culturally insensitive elements. Since its debut on Disneyland Resort’s opening day in Anaheim, California, the attraction’s problematic aspects have also been present on the East Coast.

Originally, Jungle Cruise featured Trader Sam, a shrunken head kiosk, and depictions of African “headhunters,” which drew significant criticism over time, especially following the overhaul of Splash Mountain, which was inspired by the controversial “Song of the South.”

Disney’s decision to update Jungle Cruise aimed to eliminate “tribal caricatures and negative depictions of native people,” as reported by Variety .

According to Smithsonian Magazine , Carmen Smith of Walt Disney Imagineering explained the motivation behind the changes in 2021, stating that Imagineers are responsible for ensuring that the experiences and stories they create reflect diverse voices and perspectives from around the world.

Disney is undertaking significant updates to its attractions to address and minimize negative portrayals of various groups and individuals. While some traditionalists argue that removing these depictions, whether offensive or not, erases history, Disney’s goal is to ensure that its resorts remain welcoming to all guests.

The company aims to create an environment where everyone can enjoy their experience without encountering harmful stereotypes or offensive content.

To remain relevant and sensitive to contemporary standards , Disney must continue to update the Jungle Cruise to address historical and cultural insensitivities. The attraction, a long-standing fixture at Disney parks, has faced criticism for its outdated and problematic depictions of Indigenous peoples and other cultures.

To align with modern values of inclusivity and respect, Disney will need to revise the ride’s content and imagery further, ensuring that it reflects current social awareness and promotes a positive, accurate representation of diverse cultures.

Tourism | Disney: New ‘Cars’ rides will go on Tom Sawyer Island

“To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers,” a Disney news release read Monday in reference to the “Cars”   area, which will be considered part of Frontierland.

Tom Sawyer Island has been operating at Walt Disney World since 1973, about two years after the opening of Magic Kingdom. It was inspired by Mark Twain’s characters and stories and is accessed by log rafts.  It is surrounded by Rivers of America, home of the Liberty Belle riverboat attraction.

“We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland,” Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World portfolio executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, said in the release.

“Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests,” he said.

The “Cars” attractions and Villains Land were announced during a D23 session late Saturday evening.

The area devoted to the Disney villains will be in the currently undeveloped area that has been dubbed “Beyond Big Thunder,” the land beyond the Frontierland roller coaster named Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney also confirmed Monday.

Construction permits are being filed this week, Disney World said, and work will get into “high gear next year,” leaving time to “experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today,” the release reads.

The Magic Kingdom land has had other adjustments recently. The Splash Mountain ride was transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which opened in June . The Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade, a Magic Kingdom original attraction, has been shuttered in favor of a Disney Vacation Club lounge.

The “Cars” attraction will include a ride that represents a rally race that includes mountain trails, geysers and mudholes. A second attraction will be for “the youngest racers,” Disney said. A rendering released Monday shows animated characters and new structures on the island and what appears to be a walkway forming an entrance from the Haunted Mansion area. The Liberty Belle, which has also been at the park since 1973, is not represented in the image.

Few details are known about the Villains area, although Disney said it would include two attractions, shopping and dining.

“Walt Disney Imagineering is pushing creative boundaries to dark and mysterious levels to bring this new, first-of-its-kind land to life,” Monday’s news release said.  After public speculation by executives — presented as a blue-sky approach — about that land, the project was nicknamed “Beyond Big Thunder.”

Other WDW additions announced at the D23 session include the “Disney Starlight” parade, debuting at Magic Kingdom next summer; The Tropical Americas area, replacing Dinoland with “Encanto” and “Indiana Jones”-themed rides at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2027; a new “Monsters, Inc.” land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios; a new “Mandalorian” theme for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2026; and lounges at Epcot and Magic Kingdom in 2025.

Epcot’s Test Track is currently being remodeled with new scenes and exhibits. The updated exterior will “harken back to the original World of Motion pavilion design,” Monday’s news release said. The attraction is scheduled to reopen sometime next year.

If you’re heading to Disney World in September, first of all, congratulations!

We have reporters in the Disney World parks every day , but we never get tired of visiting the parks and resorts! Every day is a new adventure, and things are changing all the time. Unfortunately, not everything is open in Disney World every day , and there are some closures you have to look out for in September!

Jungle Cruise

One of the most popular attractions in Magic Kingdom is closing for a few weeks for refurbishment. Jungle Cruise, located in Adventureland, will close on August 26th and remain closed for an undetermined amount of time.

Disney has said that the attraction is expected to reopen before the winter holidays in Disney World , which is usually when it transforms into the Jingle Cruise, but we don’t have an exact date yet. We’ll be sure to keep an ear out and let you know when we hear!

Back on June 17th, Test Track closed to undergo a MASSIVE refurbishment that is supposedly taking inspiration from the first rendition of the ride, World of Motion.

While we don’t have a reopening timeline for this attraction, we DO know that it will certainly be closed in September. Again, we’ll keep our ears listening for the latest news, and we love riding the EPCOT Monorail to get a glimpse at the construction!

Blizzard beach.

Disney World has two water parks — Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. For the past few years, both parks have not been open at the same time. While one park is open to the public, the other is closed for refurbishment, and this year, Typhoon Lagoon is open, which means Blizzard Beach is closed.

Don’t forget though that when Blizzard Beach (most likely) reopens in 2025, there will be a new perk in effect for Disney World hotel guests — they’ll be able to visit whichever water park is open for FREE on their check-in day! So be sure to pack a bathing suit, some flip flops, and a towel in your carry-on or somewhere where you can easily grab it, and get ready to have some fun!
