When should you book a vacation package to Cancun?

If you really want to make the most of your Cancun vacation, choosing the right time to go is essential. The resort's high season tends to last from December to April, when the weather is at its best. November and December are great times to visit, before the season really hits its stride. April can be hectic, as Spring Break crowds descend, but cut-price Cancun getaways in May are an excellent idea.

Where should you stay in Cancun during your vacation?

For any vacation type in cancun:.

Catering for pretty much any type of visitor, the Smart Cancun by Oasis is as well-suited to business trips as it is to family vacations. Located on Tulum Avenue in Downtown Cancun, it's also very convenient for the airport, which is only 20 minutes away.

Another great all-rounder is the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort. Built around a massive pool, this resort features a wellness spa, fitness center and kids' club, so there's something for everyone. Again, it's just 20 minutes by road from the airport.

For family vacations in Cancun:

The Fiesta Americana Condesa is one of Cancun's premier family hotels, scoring highly with its Fiesta Kids club and activities like sand castle building. And it's only around 15-20 minutes from the airport terminal.

If you and your family prefer self-catering, the Suites Villa Italia should measure up. Spacious rooms with air con and kitchenettes are the norm here, while public buses stop right outside, making airport transfers simple.

For romantic vacations in Cancun:

If you're hunting for a more intimate boutique hotel, look no further than the Hotel Casa Margarita. Attentive staff, fine food and comfortable suites combine to place this a notch above the rest for couples. Staff will also arrange airport pick-ups, but it's only 30 minutes away by road.

Casa De Los Sueños is another jewel in Cancun's boutique hotel collection. Located on the Isla Mujeres, it's a hotspot for snorkelers and divers but you can take it easy at the peaceful spa center too. You'll need to take a ferry from the airport, but this only takes 15 minutes.

For luxury vacations in Cancun:

If luxury is your focus, the Pyramid at Grand Oasis could be ideal. This instantly recognizable pyramid-shaped hotel has over 30 restaurants, after dinner acrobat shows and much more to offer - all just 25 minutes from the airport.

Another premium option to consider is the Omni Cancun, where you can relax in your own villa but still access spa facilities and relax in the three cascading pools. The hotel can lay on shuttles or taxis on request, and it's only 9 miles to the airport.

For budget vacations in Cancun:

If price is an issue, the Krystal Cancun matches upmarket hotels in most areas at a fraction of the price, with a large private beach, an excellent Mexican restaurant and a lively kids' club. It's only around 22 minutes away from the airport, too.

The Aloft Cancun is another reliable low cost alternative. Located on the Boulevard Kukulcan, the Aloft has a bright, modern look and the facilities include pools and gyms. It's about 13 miles from the airport, so transfers don't take long.

14 best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun

Caroline Lascom

When it comes to tropical escapes that combine sun, sea and sand with access and affordability, it's hard to beat Cancun.

Often considered the Las Vegas of Mexico, this economic juggernaut is known for its hedonistic pursuits, megamalls and behemoth resorts that line the commercialized strip of the Hotel Zone.

But if you dig a little deeper, this modern city has plenty to offer travelers looking to be within striking distance of spectacular archaeological ruins, Michelin-starred cuisine, world-class spas, dazzling marine life and idyllic coastal enclaves.

Beyond Cancun's glorious natural assets and diversity of experiences, this tourist mecca draws millions of travelers each year thanks to its dizzying range of accommodation offerings across the budget spectrum.

Expanding north and south beyond the Hotel Zone, and along the white sands of Isla Mujeres, you'll find major brands like Hyatt , Hilton and Marriott leading the charge on the ever-evolving all-inclusive model where quantity no longer supersedes quality.

From romantic island getaways to swanky palatial retreats and family-friendly resorts , here are some of TPG's best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun.

cancun trip expedia

One of TPG's favorite family-friendly resorts, this 715-key Hilton property, which debuted in 2021, is a fine example of the new wave of all-inclusive resorts .

Far removed from the hustle and bustle of Cancun — it's an eight-minute drive through mangrove forests to access the property after leaving the main road — this excellent value Hilton shares over 100 acres of secluded real estate with its more exclusive sibling, the Waldorf Astoria Cancun , which opened in 2022.

Standard rooms start at just over 400 square feet and boast a warm but minimalist design ethos, with wooden accents and decorative nods to Mexican culture. Spacious bathrooms have double vanities and large walk-in showers with frosted-glass doors, and all rooms have either a furnished balcony or patio.

The overall vibe is decidedly upscale, with stylish public spaces designed to maximize spectacular Caribbean views and attractive grounds anchored by two large infinity pools. Ten restaurants and bars add plenty of culinary variety, even for young picky eaters, and there's gourmet a la carte dining in addition to the standard buffet fare, all of which impress in quality and scale.

If you are not soaking up the sun on a plush sun lounger on the lightly populated white-sand beach, there are plenty of activities to satisfy competitive types, like beach volleyball and soccer. After dinner, the fun continues with themed parties as well as theatrical performances and live music, most of which is geared to families.

Grown-ups can indulge in a spa treatment or work off the fruity cocktails at the fitness center, while younger guests can visit the kids club for arts and crafts, games and sports. There's also a teen zone for those age 13 to 17, with gaming consoles and sports tournaments.

Rates at the Hilton Cancun , an All-Inclusive Resort start at $396 or 100,000 Hilton Honors points per night, based on double occupancy.

One of Hyatt's ever-expanding all-inclusive offerings, this new Impression imprint is the brand's most exclusive iteration and a great choice for uninitiated couples keen to dip their toes into the all-inclusive concept.

Located on a picturesque stretch of white sand on the southern (and more desirable) end of Isla Mujeres, the swanky resort is great for couples looking for a low-key alternative to Cancun's lively and commercialized Hotel Zone.

At Cancun's ferry port, you'll be greeted with a hand towel and welcome drink before being whisked away on a private catamaran for the 30-minute journey to the gleaming Mediterranean-style resort, where beautifully designed public spaces set a tone of refined elegance.

With just 125 rooms, the property has more of a boutique feel, with spacious accommodations decorated in soothing neutral shades and appointed with sleek furnishings and luxe bathrooms with rainfall showers. If you splash out on a larger suite, you can expect upgrades like a furnished terrace with a hot tub and larger walk-in closets.

The highly praised cuisine ranges from Mediterranean at Spezia to Japanese at Sake and sunset cocktails at The Top bar. There's plenty to inspire romance with overwater torch-lit cabanas, private sailing excursions and inventive cocktails served on the rooftop terrace with stunning panoramas. A beautifully designed infinity pool blends seamlessly with the calm turquoise waters below, or for a little more novelty, you can take a dip in the ocean via the hotel's four-story waterslide.

Rates at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets start at $1,235 or 70,000 World of Hyatt points per night for two guests .

cancun trip expedia

The latest from Hyatt's all-inclusive collection — and its ever-expanding footprint in Mexico — the Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres debuted Feb. 1 as the 13th adults-only Secrets property in Mexico.

A world apart from Cancun's commercialized Hotel Zone, located on a sweep of pristine white sand around a 50-minute drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN), the 507-key property is surrounded by upscale properties, golf courses and a marina. For travelers looking to daytrip to car-free Isla Mujeres, the ferry terminal at Punta Sam is also just a short drive away.

Tastefully appointed suites start at 581 square feet and feature hardwood furnishings and artfully layered textures and fabrics in shades of white and cream, accented with locally inspired prints and motifs. Luxe bathrooms are spacious and inviting, with double vanities and decadent free-standing tubs.

Round-the-clock entertainment is provided for every mood and moment. Active types can play beach and pool volleyball or hit the state-of-the-art gym, foodies can hone their culinary skills with a cooking class, and sybarites can head to the Secrets Spa by Pevonia for a Mayan-inspired massage or body treatment.

And there's plenty of opportunity to simply relax, unplug and soak up those tropical vibes. Sip a tequila-laced cocktail on the white-sand beach and take in classic Caribbean views, or post up on a plush, cushioned lounger beside the two infinity pools or cenote-inspired pool nestled among leafy foliage.

A range of cuisine will satisfy longer-stay guests with nine on-site restaurants (including buffet and a la carte). There's Pan-Asian at Himitsu, traditional Mexican at El Patio and refined French cuisine at Bordeaux. With Hyatt's Unlimited-Luxury inclusions, everything from gourmet cuisine and 24-hour room service to sundries and libations from the minibar are included in the rate.

Rates at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres start from $300 per night per person, based on double occupancy. Award rates are not currently available.

Some 17 miles north of Cancun, between a mangrove forest and the powdery sands of Playa Mujeres, this Garza Blanca property opened in the spring of 2022.

Chic, modern suites and residences feature wooden bedframes, contemporary lighting, flat-screen TVs and a crisp white-and-beige color palette accented with foliage-print cushions, paintings and throws. Bathrooms have freestanding tubs.

There are plenty of room types on offer, especially in the swim-up category, where junior suites start at 588 square feet and have a furnished terrace complete with a hammock and steps down into one of the hotel's six pools. One-bedroom suites are 1,276 square feet and have full kitchens (with Nespresso machines, refrigerators and dishwashers) and separate sitting areas.

Blanca Blue (nouvelle Mexican), Bocados (steak house), Hiroshi (Japanese) and Dao (Chinese) are the hotel's fine-dining venues. There's also a rooftop cocktail bar and a raw seafood bar on the beach.

The hotel is family-friendly, too, providing car seats, strollers, bottle sterilizers and bottle warmers. Families can enjoy six heated infinity pools and a designated zero-entry kids pool.

There's also a kids club and a daily program of activities for children and adults, including watersports, volleyball, yoga, bocce ball and live music in the evening. Decorated in white stone and exotic wood, the spa is large and lavish, with 16 "purification cabins" and a hydrotherapy spa.

Rates at Garza Blanca start from $402 per night, based on double occupancy.

Located around 11 miles north of Cancun's Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres is a more secluded enclave where a string of all-inclusive resorts front a gorgeous (and much quieter) white-sand beach.

This hip TRS Coral Hotel, part of Wyndham 's luxury Registry Collection imprint, combines a fashionable designer aesthetic (which may surprise frequent guests of Wyndham properties) with superb amenities and a liberal dose of exclusivity. Discerning couples who are looking to stay active and entertained all day and all night before retreating to their stylish accommodations will find a lot to love at this resort.

Accommodations, which start at 710 square feet, range from loft suites with Caribbean views to the honeymoon-favored swim-up rooms, and generously proportioned suites with private Jacuzzis. Rooms across all categories come with butler service. Even standard rooms have plenty of urban flair, with midcentury modern-inspired furnishings, white sofas, tropical hardwood accents, glass-walled terraces with tropical garden or ocean views, and spa-like bathrooms featuring double vanities, luxe marble rainfall showers and freestanding hydromassage bathtubs.

For couples that aren't overwhelmed by choice, the hotel's "Infinite Indulgence" concept includes access to services and facilities at the resort's three hotels; that's over 30 restaurants and bars, as well as live music, exclusive events, the Chic Cabaret & Restaurant (reservation fee applies) and inspired daily programming that spans everything from pole dancing workouts and paddleboarding to tequila tastings and poker nights.

In addition to a state-of-the-art gym, beautifully designed swimming pools, daily wellness programming and a full-service spa, a major selling point for tennis players here is the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center, which draws sun-seeking amateurs and pros year-round to its eight tennis courts and Rafa Nadal Museum Xperience.

Rates at TRS Coral Hotel start at $497, based on double occupancy.

On secluded white-sand shores 19 miles north of Cancun International Airport (CUN), this 593-key boutique hotel (part of Preferred Hotels & Resorts) is located within a gated condo complex, surrounded by an 18-hole golf course.

The amenities here are top-notch, with gorgeous pools, a well-equipped gym, an array of nonmotorized sports and a daily lineup of activities and shows, including fitness classes and nightly entertainment.

There are five room categories from which to choose, all with a similar aesthetic and designated butler service. All suites feature sleek, modern furnishings — beamed ceilings, tropical wooden accents, sliding doors, potted plants and beige marble floors. Lavish bathrooms are spacious and stylish, with glass-walled rainfall showers, freestanding tubs and Molton Brown toiletries.

Atelier's 15 restaurants focus primarily on authentic Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine, while 13 bars tout their innovative mixology with an extensive menu of handcrafted cocktails.

The hotel's marquee dining venue is Maria Dolores (included with your all-inclusive room rate, but reservations are required), helmed by celebrity chef Edgar Nuñez, who earned his stripes at Sud 777 in Mexico City. Praised as one of Cancun's best restaurants, it specializes in artfully presented nouvelle Mexican cuisine served against a sophisticated backdrop of colossal marble pillars, brown leather chairs, crisp white tablecloths and elegant white booths.

For a more low-key experience, there's contemporary Asian fare at the minimalist Takeshi, pizza and pasta at Cilento and healthy Mediterranean cuisine at the whimsically decorated Cala di Luna.

Rates at Atelier Playa Mujeres start at $687 per night, based on double occupancy.

At the epicenter of Cancun's tourist zone, this popular all-inclusive Ziva resort is the fun, family-friendly counterpart to Hyatt's adults-only Zilara brand.

Flexible room configurations and a slew of family-oriented amenities, like a family pool, kids clubs and teen zone, make the demographic skew young family, but for couples, a new adult-only Turquoize Tower — with upgrades like private infinity pools and hot tubs — is perfect for romantic couples looking to sequester themselves in their own beach haven.

The 547 rooms and suites won't win any design awards but they are bright, attractive and functional. Even standard rooms are equipped with such tech-forward amenities as Bluetooth speakers and charging stations, as well as high-end bathrooms with rainfall showers, plush robes and luxe toiletries. Guest rooms in the 17-floor Club Tower come with Hyatt Ziva Club access, perks such as private check-in and checkout, and personalized concierge services.

Guests looking for more grown-up fun can indulge at the oceanfront spa with a signature massage or holistic body treatment, or recline poolside on a cushioned chaise lounge and make occasional forays to one of the lively swim-up bars for a Don Julio-spiked margarita; the liquor and wine selection here is above average for an all-inclusive. Down at the beach, there are complimentary paddleboards and kayaks to explore the coastline and scour for marine life.

With eight restaurants, including El Mercado, Hyatt Ziva Cancun's all-day buffet; Pasteles, a dessert parlor; a microbrewery; and roaming food carts for that very small window of the day when there's not a full-service restaurant open, there's plenty of culinary variety for all ages and tastes.

Rates at Hyatt Ziva Cancun start at $722 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

It's not unusual to choose a hotel solely based on the quality of its restaurants, but when it comes to all-inclusive properties, that tends to be quite an outlier. This intimate Zoetry property is one such anomaly, having gained worldwide acclaim for its signature Casa Rolandi restaurant, an island institution serving gourmet Italian cuisine for over 30 years.

Beyond the hotel's culinary cachet — the upscale Le Metissage is also excellent — the focus at this low-key boutique property (just 35 oceanfront rooms) is on wellness and relaxation rather than dancing till dawn or unleashing any competitive spirit during pool volleyball.

Attractive accommodations feature light, bright interiors with canopied beds and marble bathrooms stocked with Bulgari bath amenities, and guests enjoy elevated perks such as turndown service, a complimentary beach bag and a welcome bottle of wine.

In addition to the small, private beach, where paddleboards and kayaks are available to explore the island's calm waters, a centerpiece infinity pool is surrounded by plush loungers and a saltwater pool.

The mindfulness ethos extends to the property's spa, where thalassotherapy treatments incorporate seawater and seaweed, and there are daily yoga classes, a small fitness center and house bikes to explore the island.

Zoetry's "Endless Privileges" concept is especially valuable to guests who prefer their all-inclusive rate to extend to top-shelf cocktails and chef-driven cuisine. All guests also receive a complimentary 20-minute wellness experience and the convenience of no defined check-in or checkout times.

Rates at Zoetry Villa Rolandi Isla Mujeres Cancun start at $711 per night based on double occupancy.

Located close to the Hotel Zone's buzzing shopping (it's across the street from La Isla shopping mall) and dining scene, this modern 371-key property is a lively staging post for younger couples looking for an entertainment-rich vacation with an array of surprising in-room perks (for this price point).

Recently renovated standard rooms are compact (they start at 353 square feet) compared to the competitor set but are bright and crisp with shiny tiled floors, streamlined furnishings and an unfussy aesthetic. The lack of elbow room is offset by enhancements like aromatherapy and pillow menus, plush robes and slippers, Nespresso machines, Molton Brown bath amenities and 400-thread-count sheets.

The hotel's expansive amenities include eight oceanfront swimming pools, a fitness center and the Feel Harmony Spa, which offers an extensive menu of reasonably priced treatments and massages; a 50-minute classic Swedish massage will set you back $118, a Mayan secret balancing treatment with a stone massage, $160.

Daily programming marries wellness activities like yoga with fun-in-the-sun classics such as beach volleyball and more bacchanalian pursuits as the night unfolds. Dining options include nouvelle Mexican fare at Siete, oceanfront seafood at Sea Corner, Mediterranean food at Azur and Italian classics at Varenna.

Rates at Live Aqua Beach Resort start at $520 per night, based on double occupancy.

A sophisticated retreat just a short drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN), Le Blanc Spa Resort stands out for contemporary accommodations, impeccable service and next-level perks and amenities.

Elegant rooms with one king or two queen beds dressed in crisp white linens are appointed with light wooden furnishings, and muted tones create a soothing ambience. But these rooms shine in their surfeit of luxe amenities. There are Lavazza coffee makers, Jacuzzi tubs, smart TVs with Google Chromecast, hair straighteners and hairdryers, plush robes and slippers and complimentary beach bags. Guests are also welcomed with a bottle of Robert Mondavi wine, and there are thoughtful rituals like nightly petit fours left by the bed at turndown service.

Whether it's relaxing on the manicured white-sand beach, lounging by the Sol pool with a signature cocktail in hand, keeping up your fitness routine at the state-of-the-art gym, taking a sunrise yoga class, or enjoying a Mayan-inspired ritual at the spa, La Blanc is one of those properties that adeptly marries wellness and indulgence.

Of the six restaurants, Lumiere is the one you shouldn't miss. Helmed by renowned local chef Justina Zavaleta, it serves French haute cuisine in an elegant setting. Savor appetizers such as scallop tartare with seaweed and ginger emulsion or heartier signature dishes like lamb rack with fermented eggplant puree or beef cheek with truffled potato and wild mushrooms.

Rates at Le Blanc Spa Resort start at $800 per room, based on double occupancy.

While some guests may find the rooms rather bland and generic, they are attractive nonetheless, with teak wooden furnishings, plush drapes and headboards, high-thread-count linens accented with blue throw cushions and large windows framing Caribbean views.

For that extra feeling of exclusivity, upgrade to the Preferred Club level, where spacious rooms (over 1,300 square feet in the Ocean Front Master Suites) include larger living spaces, a dining table, a soaking tub and furnished terraces, plus club-level perks like butler service, a designated swimming pool and a lounge area with drinks and bites.

There are three infinity pools surrounded by loungers and cabanas (an extra fee applies), and active types can explore the coastline on a paddleboard or kayak, sign up for a dance class or play pool volleyball, while sybarites can indulge in such treatments as an Aromatherapy Salt Glow at the Spa by Pevonia.

A popular choice for families, the Moon Palace Cancun has a whopping 2,000 guest rooms divided between two distinct sections, Sunrise and Nizuc, which share restaurants, entertainment offerings and activities.

Nizuc tends to draw families with younger children thanks to its flexible room configurations (including family suites with connecting bedrooms) and an expansive pool complex with a waterslide.

The Sunrise section is where you'll find the resort's Noir nightclub, as well as more pools, including one with a surf simulator and arcade games at the Wired Lounge.

Rooms are plush and spacious, if a little dated for some tastes, with dark wooden furnishings and whirlpool tubs positioned in the bedroom area. For more elevated offerings, it's worth splashing out on a fancier suite, like the Superior Junior Suite Golf Course View, which comes with its own golf cart.

In addition to the multiple pools with swim-up bars, there are dozens of bars and restaurants to choose from, serving everything from cantina-style Mexican to pan-Asian and gourmet burgers at La Burgueria. Its picturesque beachfront location, full-service Mayan spa, and reliably good food and drink options make it a repeat favorite. Five a la carte restaurants, the casual health-inspired cafe, and top-shelf drinks are included. The superb butler service means you’ll barely have to lift a finger unless you’re taking advantage of any of the included activities like aquatic spinning (think Peloton in the pool). Rooms at this 260-suite property start on the small side at 429 square feet, but you’ll still have plenty of room to stretch out — especially in the double-size marble whirlpool tub. The stocked minibar, Lavazza coffee machine, in-room premium liquor dispensers, and 24-hour room service are big perks. Le Blanc’s nightly rates cover nearly everything, sometimes even airport transfers, and they handle dietary restrictions like pros. It’s the little things that landed this five-star all-inclusive on our World’s Best list in 2021 and 2022. Le Blanc guests have access to all Palace properties’ sister resorts, which include the Moon Palace complex, Playacar Palace, and Cozumel Palace (transportation not included).

Nina Ruggiero, Editorial Director

Le Blanc changed what I thought of Cancun all-inclusive resorts. The dining felt elevated, the spa felt luxurious, and my room came with a private ocean-view jacuzzi. It's adult-only, and while the swim-up cocktail bar has a bit of a party vibe, it's overall serene compared to most Cancun scenes.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun

The expanded kids’ programming is included and covers a wide range of ages.

Even with adults-only options, this is first and foremost a family-friendly resort.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun has seen a few changes since its 2016 debut on the tip of Cancun’s stunning Punta Cancun peninsula. The new adults-only spaces, extended kids’ club programming for up to age 19, and fine-tuning of its restaurant and bar options have only made it better. All 17 restaurants, bars, and lounges, from the onsite microbrewery and tequila bar to fresh ceviche and tableside teppanyaki, are covered in the nightly rate. We love the multi-generational, choose-your-own-adventure vibe here at this 2021 World's Best award winner. Days are loaded with activities to fit a variety of energy levels and age ranges, whether you’re spending it out on the beach, by the pool, or in the spa. The 547 contemporary suites at this resort vary between 483 to 4,381 square feet and don’t skimp on important details like daily restocked minibars, blackout drapes, Bluetooth speakers, and 24-hour room service. Turquoize Tower upgrades flaunt high-floor 270-degree views, extras like butler service, and access to adults-only dining, bar, and pool areas.

Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa, Mexico

Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa

The resort’s casual, beachy vibe and unique octagonal-shaped rooms are a standout.

Fully uncovered exterior walkways are great until the weather isn’t.

Don’t let Dreams Riviera Cancun’s location in the former sleepy fishing village of Puerto Morelos fool you—the six onsite bars, including a swim-up and a beach bar, keep guests’ glasses full, and the poolside entertainment team goes big. Originally opened in 2009, the most recent 2023 renovation added an all-ages arcade and kids’ waterpark, and it upgraded the Italian specialty restaurant and its private dining wine cellar. Between the six a la carte restaurants, main buffet, snack bars, and 24-hour room service, you’ll be well fed. The overall vibe tows the line between contemporary, casual, and tropical resort with woven rattan accents, marble floors and bathrooms, and several thatched-roof palapas. Some of our favorite details from the 486 rooms are their massive mirrors, standalone tubs, frond fan blades, and unique octagonal shape, but fair warning, light sleepers should pack a good pair of earplugs . There’s no up-charge for premium alcohol, but expect to pay extra for beach cabana rentals, spa services, and tips.

Taylor Fox, Updates Writer

I stayed here for a week. This resort gives you a bit of everything. I loved the gorgeous spa and high-end gym that was easy to access, and the salon is equipped with some of the most knowledgeable stylists I've encountered at an all-inclusive.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Impeccable service and the variety of food and beverage options don’t disappoint.

This resort requires guests to wear the dreaded all-inclusive bracelet.

One of the best all-inclusive, adults-only resorts , the Atelier Playa Mujeres may have only opened in 2018, but that didn’t stop this eco-friendly beachfront resort from getting a little work done on its 593 suites just three years later. Whether you book into one of the 742-square-foot entry-level junior suites or splurge on the over 3,000-square-foot top-level Inspira suite, you’ll find a perfect balance of sophistication and style at this 2023 World’s Best hotel. We especially like the oceanfront views, comfy beds, and elegant moss-green marble bathrooms. Inspira upgrades come with amenity perks like in-room personalization menus, exclusive Inspira-only areas, butler service, and several discounts and freebies. The nightly rate covers all 13 restaurants and 12 bars, including the reservation-only Maria Dolores by Edgar Nunez. The stunning 14,000-square-foot pool, 18-hole golf course, tri-level spa, and decked-out TechnoGym fitness are big draws, while guided onsite art walks and the pup-friendly PetIt program add even more value. When it comes to child-free all-inclusive resorts in Mexico , this is the cream of the crop.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Excellence Resorts

Gorgeous suites that have extensive outdoor areas and swim-up options.

A dress code is enforced—at restaurants and some bars.

Excellence Playa Mujeres is a 450-suite beachfront property for adults only. This 2022 World’s Best winner impresses with generous marble-laden suites that start out at over 800 square feet and there isn’t a bad room in the house. We love that upgrades don’t cost a fortune (far from it) but pay off in droves with incredible terraces, swim-up access, and rooftop plunge pools. Nine restaurants feature global cuisines and details like hand-rolled pasta and oceanfront seating, and premium, well-crafted cocktails and drinks are served from morning to late night. One of the best all-inclusive, adults-only resorts in Mexico, it is the perfect place to sharpen skills at a handful of niche activities, from archery and air rifle shooting to water polo and beach soccer, all included. There are several perks if you upgrade to the Excellence Club level with some favorites being access to all seven pools and six whirlpools, a club-only beach area (no hunting for loungers), and in-room extras like fresh flowers and small snacks delivered daily.

Moon Palace Cancun

Kids under 17 stay and eat free, and everyone has access to a truly superlative number of activities and amenities.

You’ll need a map and a good sense of direction to navigate this massive property—and you’ll be sharing with up to 10,000 other guests.

For those looking to go big or go home, you can’t get much more behemoth than Moon Palace Cancun. This multi-resort complex has an expansive 123-acre beachfront location and a staggering 2,483 rooms — and not an inch is wasted. Chances are, if there’s a resort feature you’re hoping for, it’s here, from a lazy river to a bowling alley and even made-to-order baby food and a dedicated kids spa area with treatments. The spa itself is over 76,000 square feet, there are 19 pools, an incredible waterpark for all ages, and there’s a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. You may worry that a resort this big has spread itself too thin, but Moon Palace manages to deliver over and over, whether it’s with good food, top service, or quality experiences. If you’ve got dietary restrictions, know they have special allergy and vegan protocols in place to keep you safe. We also like that this resort recognizes its impact on the environment and local community and puts at least 10 percent of its profits back into the community and toward sustainability initiatives. They also host local artisan markets and source roughly 80 percent of their food locally.

Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun

 ©Grupo Posadas

The resort appeals to all five senses through its design, amenities, and personalization—and they’ve got a temazcal.

Food can be hit or miss, and there’s an extra cost for premium food and drink options.

Live Aqua Cancun is an adults-only resort with a sophisticated aesthetic and lively location. Originally debuting in 2004, then remodeled and reintroduced in 2007, Live Aqua’s most recent 2019 renovations brought the all-suite total up to 371 and added modern touches like surround sound and smart controls. Aqua aims to appeal to all five senses, from its seven international a la carte restaurants and colorful beachfront views to the seven pools set at different temperatures and in-room personalization menus. The prime Hotel Zone location yields expectedly smaller rooms than others on this list, though don’t worry; there’s enough space to unpack and spread out and enjoy the gorgeous polished marble floors, plush but firm beds, Molton Brown bath products, stocked minibars, automated curtains, and Nespresso machine. Daily activities, themed nights, and a wellness area with a 12-room spa and Mexican temazcal.

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

Hyatt Hotels

Also available to book via Expedia .

Every room features an outdoor hammock with a view.

The resort is adults-only with a minimum age of 18.

Hyatt Zilara sees a high guest return rate, which we credit to the resort’s friendly staff, fun but not fratty vibe (a feat for a Hotel Zone property), and consistently good food and beverages. That isn’t to say that this adults-only resort doesn’t know how to throw a party. Nightly entertainment includes big live show performances and themed parties. We love the lively vibe of these events, but we’d be lying if we said they weren’t notably loud. During the day, guests can be found lounging in cabanas at the beach or beachfront pool or sweating it out in the full-service spa’s sauna or at a fitness class. Water sports and land sports are included, as are five of the six international a la carte restaurants and premium drinks at all five of the bars and lounges. Our favorite part of each room? Curling up on the balcony hammock to soak up ocean and sunset views. You can also expect each of the 310 suites to come with a pillow menu, Nespresso machine and (slightly unimpressive) minibar, and discreet room service delivery box. Fancy a plunge pool? Upgrade for swim-up rooms with sunken loungers and split-level layouts.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun

The resort design optimizes its beautiful beachfront location and views from the rooftop infinity pool are stunning.

Required a la carte reservations and dress codes can feel restrictive at times.

Garza Blanca Cancun is a modern all-inclusive that opened with a beachfront on Playa Mujeres in 2022. Bright and breezy spaces, views at every turn, and crisp, contemporary design dominate here with gleaming, polished marble and glass, high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling picture windows that kick the beachfront setting and level of luxury up a notch. That said, an evening dress code is required at some restaurants and bars, and guests are required to wear all-inclusive bracelets. The international a la carte restaurants get much praise, but it would be a mistake to miss out on the food hall buffet or even the beachside food truck. Guests can expect creative craft cocktails, 452 spacious suites with private terraces and modern freestanding tubs, and a large spa with an extensive hydrotherapy circuit. Accessible rooms are available, and the resort’s unique Family Program includes connecting rooms, free stays for children, daily club activities, and special take-home kids amenities. For adults, the adults-only rooftop area is a one-stop oasis with food, drinks, and an infinity pool with unforgettable views.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun

This resort is notably LGBTQ-friendly as reviewed by travelers.

Some restaurants have dress code requirements.

Travelers looking for a more traditional Cancun all-inclusive experience will appreciate the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun’s sprawling but approachable layout and key waterfront location at the peninsular tip of the Hotel Zone. The 1990-built property has gone through several renovations that have modernized decor and amenities in the 602 suites, updated offerings at the 20,000-square-foot kids club, and added several restaurant concepts, including a Tuscan dinner concept complete with live Italian music in 2023. From grabbing cocktails at the lagoon pool’s swim-up bar to slurping down oysters at the raw bar, this resort scores high on its food and drink options. If your vacation vices lean more toward indulging in spa treatments, rounds of golf, or sun worshiping, well, you’re covered here, too. Picture window views of the ocean or pool, deep-soaking marble tubs, and the daily restocked minibar are standard standout features, with upgrades adding large terraces and plunge pools.

Know Before You Go

Consider amenities in addition to beaches.

The beautiful beaches of Cancun can fall prey to the seasonal curse of sargassum seaweed. These large heaps of stinky seaweed wash ashore, sometimes in droves, between April and August. This is a natural occurrence that resorts have no control over. Many beachfront resorts do their best to keep the beach clean, but it’s not always possible. All the more reason to choose a resort with plenty of onsite amenities, like pools, spa features, and activities, right?

Plan around hurricane season

The Yucatan Peninsula is located along Mexico’s hurricane belt, and reservations booked during hurricane season (June through November) may be affected by bad weather. During this time it’s possible to experience heavy rains that can last from just minutes up to days. Be sure to check your resort’s hurricane policy before booking, be prepared with travel insurance and an emergency evacuation plan (just in case), and be aware that there is a chance your beach vacation may have to be postponed.

No Spanish? No problem

Almost everyone you’ll come across will speak English. Cancun is a tourist hub and speaking conversational, if not perfect, English is required for any tourist-facing position. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t practice your Spanish before you arrive—or while you’re here! It never hurts to learn a few key words and phrases in the language of your destination.

How We Chose These Hotels

It’s not easy sifting through the hundreds of all-inclusive hotels in Cancun. Several hotels made the list because they've earned a coveted spot in our annual World's Best awards, in which hundreds of thousands of T+L readers vote on their favorite hotels across the globe (see the 2023 winners here).

In addition to those award-winning properties, the author of this article, Katherine Alex Beaven , contributed her expertise. She has personally visited dozens of properties in the area, and for this article, she also consulted colleagues who frequent Cancun and pored over hundreds of reviews. She focused on the quality of the guest experience, from check-in to check-out and every minute in between. Well-designed spaces, thoughtful touches, and functional details were taken into account, along with location, value, and amenities. For this list in particular, the quality of the resort’s food and beverage offerings, the diversity of onsite activities, what is included in the rate (and what’s not), and the level of service were all taken into account. In her 10 years of experience as a travel writer, Beaven has reviewed more than 500 hotels around the world.

And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .

More About Cancun

Cancun is a major resort destination on the Yucatan Peninsula overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. One visit and you'll understand why this stretch of white-sand beach transformed into the thriving resort destination you'll experience today. The hotel zone stretches along the coastline between the Nichupte Lagoon and the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean.

While most people connect Cancun to Spring Break, there is much more to this seaside resort community than a rowdy reputation. This region of Mexico is known for its extensive Mayan culture and artifacts. The Museo Maya de Cancun, located in the hotel zone, hosts more than 400 artifacts and an outdoor exhibit including original ruins among walking paths.

To the north is the community of Playa Mujeres, a sleepy resort area that has grown in recent years. Exquisite resorts are staking a claim along this area offering an alternative to the bustling hotel zone without sacrificing the beach experience.

To the south, stretching from Puerto Morelos to Tulum is the resort area known as Riviera Maya. For information on this area, please explore our Riviera Maya page.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

What CancĂșn’s Tourists Don’t See Is a Sprawling Concrete Jungle

CancĂșn Mxico

This story originally appeared on WIRED en Español and has been translated from Spanish.

The wide mowed lawns and leafy trees, the sports fields shining under their illuminated lights, the bouncy castles in the children’s play areas— especially the bouncy castles—are what Celia PĂ©rez GodĂnez envies. These are the trappings of the wealthy neighborhood she travels to every day as a domestic worker in CancĂșn. PĂ©rez envies the rich.

She tells me this sitting on a rotten wooden bench one August afternoon, her 7-year-old son getting his scooter stuck on the broken path here many miles away in the north of the city, in a tiny park. Full of garbage and wild vegetation, it’s a short distance from where PĂ©rez lives, close to the city outskirts. As we talk, a homeless person in the background shouts and laughs as if at a joke only he understands.

PĂ©rez is a 33-year-old single mother from San Marcos, Guatemala. She migrated in 2013 to CancĂșn, Mexico’s over-promoted and hugely popular tourist destination. She rarely has enough time and money to go to the beach and cannot find green areas or decent, safe public spaces for her son to play, having to make do with the few parks, like this, that are available. This is not the life she expected. “You hear that CancĂșn is wonderful, but when you get here
 it’s a disappointment.”

At 54 years old, CancĂșn is the youngest city in Mexico. It was designed from scratch in the 1970s as a new holiday destination in the country. In this respect, it’s been a wild success. But as an urban project, it is a failure. Designed for 200,000 people, the population of its urban sprawl now exceeds 1 million. Before, much of this area was jungle; today there are hundreds of hotels. Accelerated real-estate development has bitten into the surrounding vegetation year after year.

This growth has been an environmental nightmare but also a social one, giving vastly unequal benefits to the city’s richer and poorer inhabitants. According to recent research by Christine McCoy, an academic at the University of the Caribbean, most people in CancĂșn live without the minimum green areas or public spaces needed for proper recreation, leisure, rest, or socializing. This is especially true in those regions where the most vulnerable live.

Click play to see CancĂșn’s urban development from 1984 to 2022.

This inequality has evolved despite CancĂșn’s rapid expansion consuming huge amounts of green space. Between 2001 and 2021, the surrounding region lost at least 30,000 hectares of jungle, according to data from Mexico’s National Forestry Commission. On the land ripped from the jungle there are now residential and hotel projects. And according to data seen by WIRED, plenty more developents are on the way. At the federal level, since 2018 the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has received 40 requests for further land use change in the area. If approved, 650 more hectares of jungle will disappear.

Data obtained through freedom of information shows what urban development projects have been processed over this period, these ranging from 2,247 tiny, popular housing units on the one hand to a 20-story, 429-room all-inclusive luxury hotel. Crucially, none of these include applications for public parks or green areas to be developed or improved, in a city that is already bursting at the seams, having exceeded its tourist carrying capacity for more than a decade.

The Internet Archive Loses Its Appeal of a Major Copyright Case

This shows how unsustainable urban development and social inequality can go hand-in-hand, says McCoy. For the wealthy, jungle is being removed to build luxury complexes adorned with grass; in the south of the city, new developments come complete with gardens, and residents enjoy 9.3 square meters of green space per person, very close to what the World Health Organization marks as optimal. But in the north of the city, where the social housing complexes are located (what are essentially dormitory zones for workers in the tourism industry), residents have only 2.3 square meters of green space per person.

Christine McCoy researcher at the University of the Caribbean is a specialist in urban development issues.

“It is unfair,” says McCoy, because that wealthier zone is home to only 35,000 people—4 percent of the population, and typically those with the highest incomes. Whereas that second, space-deprived zone, where PĂ©rez lives, is home to 500,000 people—50 percent of the population, among them the most marginalized, who have to make do with spaces with little dignity, like this park.

This space that PĂ©rez and I are sitting in has barely the footprint of a medium-size house and is the only green space in the 10 surrounding neighborhoods. It is, in fact, a tiny urban cenote —a water-filled sinkhole (these are relatively common geographical features that characterize the Yucatan landscape). Since no tourists come here, it is full of garbage, its water green and thick and fenced off so that no one would think of entering. Around it there are three swings, two slides, two see-saws, and half a basketball court.

“It is very cramped,” PĂ©rez says of the park. “I would like there to be more and for each park to have different games. That way each person could choose which one to go to, because all the parks are the same, with the same games, and the children get bored.” PĂ©rez arrived at the park accompanied by Guadalupe SĂĄnchez, an older woman who counts PĂ©rez as her only friend.

Hence the importance of public spaces, says McCoy. “They are generators of social cohesion, where people meet and recognize each other, creating identity. They help to densify the social fabric, contributing to improve security, especially for vulnerable groups, such as women, the elderly, and children.”

Two years after its construction the Parque de los Gemelos is still in excellent condition and is one of the most used...

Green spaces and public parks also help to improve the perception of security and, when they are in good condition, to inhibit crime, says Zury RodrĂguez Trinidad, director of Crime Prevention of the Secretariat of Security of CancĂșn. A public space full of people encourages interaction among neighbors. There are more eyes watching what is happening around the neighborhood, and people have the opportunity to be distracted, rest, or exercise in a place intended for that purpose.

Within his department, he says, there is a team in charge of mowing neglected green areas, because he knows that a vacant lot represents a risk, especially for women, who could be assaulted or raped there. CancĂșn has one of the highest rates of sex crimes Mexico—there were 17.9 investigations per 100,000 inhabitants in the first half of 2024, more than double the national average of 8.2, according to the Secretariat of Citizen Security of the state of Quintana Roo, where the city is located.

In the first half of the year, CancĂșn registered 21 neighborhoods with a high or very high incidence of crime, 19 of which are located in the northern zone where green spaces or public parks are scarce, and where overdensification and overcrowding is an issue.

Backetball coach Alexis Zepeda promotes training among young people from the surrounding area.

“Believe it or not it used to be worse; before there were much more assaults or bodies left lying around, but since it’s been lit up, nothing like that has happened here,” says city resident Miguel Ávila, referring to efforts made by Mexico’s Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development to try to fix CancĂșn’s public space problem. In 2021, more than 90 million pesos ($45 million) were invested in the construction of two public markets, a community development center, two parks and the renovation of two more, including the Parque de los Gemelos, where I spoke with Ávila.

Before there were two smaller open spaces here, divided by a street, Ávila explains. “We called them ‘the twins.’ Then they joined them and made this new park.” Now there are two soccer fields with artificial grass, two basketball courts, a space with children’s games, a wide covered walkway where boxing is practiced, and lots of lighting. More than 150 people are training, exercising, or simply resting on a bench the night I visit.

DarĂo one of the young people who goes daily to play basketball at Parque de los Gemelos.

Ávila’s two daughters, both in high school, come daily to practice basketball and are part of the “Alab óol” club (“The Last Breath” in Mayan). Everyone, at the request of coach Alexis Zepeda, gets involved with the maintenance of the park, sweeping, cleaning, taking care of each other, and no one has ever witnessed an assault or seen a body dumped. Most of the team lives locally, but there are also people who travel an hour to get here—because where they live there are no public courts.
