From vibrant cities to jaw-dropping natural wonders like Zhangjiajie, here are the places in China you won’t want to miss © siraphat / Shutterstock

In  China , antiquity and heritage meet 21st-century innovation and lighting-fast development.

This is a country packed with highlights – so many that it might be hard to craft a manageable itinerary. Start by immersing yourself in one of China's gigantic, sprawling cities – which contain plenty of frantic energy, but hidden pockets of serenity, too. Take a break from the crush by soaking up China's natural scenery – think jagged peaks and pine forests draped in a sea of mist that look like they've been lifted straight from one of the country's masterpiece scroll paintings. As one of the world's most ancient civilizations, China also offers wonderful opportunities to explore astounding relics from its millennia of history.

Don't know where to start? Whether you dream of gilded temples, boisterous urban environments, fabulous food or the wonders of the Great Wall, here are our picks of the best places to visit in China.

Imperial shopfronts in a traditional hutong district, Beijing, China

One of the world's greatest cities and China's absolute can't-miss destination, Beijing is home to many of China's big-ticket attractions: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square , the Summer Palace and more. But its appeal goes well beyond blockbuster sights. Get lost among its labyrinth of traditional hutongs (alleyways), marvel at its cutting-edge modern architecture, feast on Peking duck and a million other dishes from across the country, check out the local indie music scene, admire Ming-dynasty ceramics, drop by a traditional teahouse or enjoy a boisterous evening sampling the local baijiu  (sorghum wine).

Buddha scultpures in the Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, China

2. Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang

Along the ancient Silk Road, the atmospheric frontier town of Dunhuang is home to one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist art. Among more than 490 Buddhist caves in the area, the mural and statue-filled Mogao Grottoes represent perhaps the zenith of Buddhist artistry in China.

Tourists on a viewing platform at Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

3. Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

One of China's most famous treks, this 22km (14-mile)  hiking trail winds through a World Heritage-listed gorge in Yunnan that is one of Asia's most striking landscapes. Framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the scenic Jinshajiang River, the natural monument plunges to depths of 3900m (12,795ft), making it one of the deepest gorges in the world.

The head of the Le Shan Buddha

4. Le Shan, Sichuan

Standing at the confluence of two rivers, the monumental 1200-year old Buddha image  at Le Shan is carved directly into the rock face. World Heritage–listed, the extraordinary monument stands 71m (233ft) tall and 28m (92ft) wide, making it the largest ancient Buddha in the world. Whether you're spiritually included or not, coming face to face with this sculpture is quite a moving experience.

The nighttime skyline of Shanghai, China

5. Shanghai

Glitzy, elegant, historic and cosmopolitan: everything you've heard about Shanghai is true. Just take a stroll through the French Concession or along the Bund , and you'll see for yourself. From the grand display of 1920s architecture to the city's sophisticated restaurants and rooftop bars to the sci-fi neon-lit skyscrapers across the bay, Shanghai is the past and future China brought to vivid life.

A young man looks off the side of the Great Wall of China

6. The Great Wall

Snaking through China's majestic mountainous terrain, the spectacular  Great Wall is the nation's most iconic landmark. Built over two millennia, this awe-inspiring, 21,196km-long (13,170-mile-long) fortification is a true marvel of human accomplishment. In fact, it's not one wall but many, stretching from the east coast all the way to the far western desert. The most easily accessible stretches can be reached by car from Beijing.

A caretaker with baby pandas, Chengdu

With its charming teahouses, lively nightlife and fiery Sichuan food, Chengdu is one of China's most popular cities for travelers. But most folk visit here for one reason: pandas. And while you'd be very lucky to spot one in the wild, sightings are guaranteed at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base . Other draws of this inland regional capital include temples, pavilions and museums devoted to the culture of the ancient Shu kingdom.

Pastoral landscape on Yulong river, Yangshuo, China

8. Karst peaks, Guilin

Spanning the distance from Guilin to Yangshou , the picture-perfect karst-limestone peaks offer an extraordinary backdrop to the scenic Li River and rice paddies. Grab a bicycle or board a raft to tour this beautiful countryside, passing farmers and water buffalo along the way.

A spread of dim sum, Guangzhou, China

9. Guangzhou

This vibrant and dynamic  megacity is one of China's most fascinating hubs. You'll find an intriguing mix of old and new in a city where skyscrapers nudge the clouds, and monks shuffle around 1500-year-old Buddhist temples. But it's the Cantonese cuisine that lures in many, with some of the finest dim sum in all of China.

A woman in traditional dress walks through the terraced rice paddies of Longji, China

10. Longji Rice Terraces, Guangxi

You'll find rice paddies all over China – but few are as spectacular as the ones in Longji , built against a backdrop of lush mountains. Walks here lead to viewpoints overlooking sculpted, iridescent green terraces with swirling patterns resembling the contours of a giant thumbprint.

The Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an, China

11. Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an

Unearthed in Xi'an by unsuspecting rural workers in 1974, this enigmatic army of life-sized statues remains of the world's most remarkable archaeological finds. Dating back 2200 years, they were built to protect the underground tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Needless to say, meeting the warriors face to face is an experience you'll never forget.

People and street vendors in the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an, China

12. Xi'an

In a country where cities seemingly spring up overnight, this is one of the oldest and grandest. Known to most for its extraordinary Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an is also remarkable in its own right – notably as the beginning of the Silk Road, a trade route with a legacy that remains intact within its atmospheric Muslim Quarter .

Visitors on the glass cliff walk at Tianmen Mtn, Zhangjiajie, China

13. Zhangjiajie

Rising dramatically from the subtropical forests of northwest Hunan , the pinnacle rock formations of  Zhangjiajie inspired the scenery in the film Avatar (2009). Take it all in as you walk over a vertiginous glass-bottom suspension bridge floating 300m (984ft) above ground. If that's not daring enough, you can bungee jump off it, too.

As side gate of the Hall of Preserving Harmony on a snowy day, Forbidden City, Beijing, China

14. Forbidden City, Beijing

Among China's imperial sights, none can compare in size, grandeur or mystique to Beijing's Forbidden City . Built between 1406 and 1420, this sprawling palace was off-limits for 500 years until the overthrow of the last Qing emperor in 1911. Today, it's very much open to the public, attracting nearly 20 million visitors each year. Despite the crowds, its massive scale remains humbling.

Guide To Visiting Best Of China With Kids

Top wondrous destinations.

best places to visit in china with family

China  has become a hugely popular destination choice and our friends at  luxury tour operator Lightfoot Travel  are full of suggestions on where to go and what activities to do as a family. The best are those that enable parents to see the sites they want, while giving little extras that keep the kids happy and entertained.

best places to visit in china with family

While people often think historic sites when talking about China’s capital, there are a ton of options to make these places fun for kids, as well as opportunities to explore areas outside the city. The Great Wall at Mutianyu is recommended for those with younger kids, as the wall is restored and safer for them to walk on. The cable car up and toboggan slide down are huge hits, as is kite flying on top of the wall. For those with older kids, we recommend unrestored spots further out that really give visitors that intrepid explorer feel when clambering up walls and through crumbling turrets. Sites like the Forbidden City are made interesting with hidden symbol treasure hunts; traditional hutongs, or old  Beijing  alleyways, which can be brought to life with fun sidecar tours. The Olympic ‘Birds Nest’ stadium can be zipped through aboard a Segway; and kids of all ages love the Kung Fu or contortionist acrobat shows.

best places to visit in china with family

Like in Beijing,  Shanghai  sidecar tours are an excellent way for families to explore historic neighbourhoods and sites. Zooming through the city in these funky open air cars trumps walking tours in our opinion! Shanghai’s ERA show is a multimedia extravaganza which includes a circus with jugglers and acrobats, modern art with mirrors, water screens and an excellent musical score. The Huangpu River cruise is a magical journey in itself. Early morning visits to Fuxing Park in the former French Concession give a glimpse of local life with dancing groups, singers, card and chess players as well as people practicing Tai Chi. The variety of activities is truly fascinating.

best places to visit in china with family

YUNNAN PROVINCE

One of Lightfoot’s most popular China destinations over the past few years,  Yunnan , is truly stunning with charming old villages, fascinating Tibetan culture, stunning snow-capped peaks and vast plains and valleys. The province is large and diverse and is best experienced through a multi-stop tour. Take your family off the beaten path onto a new journey!

best places to visit in china with family

LIJIANG, YUNNAN PROVINCE

Lijiang  is often people’s first stop on a greater Yunnan tour, with its quintessential old town and towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Take the cable car to specific spots up the mountain, and then hike along the grassy trails looking out over the surrounding area. ‘Impression Lijiang’ is an incredible outdoor performance created by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, demonstrating the traditions and lifestyle of the local minority groups. Featuring around 400 ethnic Naxi, Bai and Yi people, the performance consists of singing, dancing, horse riding and drumming, which the kids will find mesmerizing.

universal

TIGER LEAPING GORGE, YUNNAN PROVINCE

Great for older kids, the  Tiger Leaping Gorge  is one of the deepest gorges in the world and provides an excellent hiking experience. It’s a 7-hour hike from the start of the gorge to Halfway Guesthouse, where guests can stay for the night before embarking on the 2-hour hike to the end. The guesthouse is extremely basic, but a lovely place to rest your legs after the long hike. An open air terrace overlooking the gorge provides magnificent views, and it is great fun to sit and chat to the other guests who hail from countries around the world. For those keen for something less strenuous, you can drive to a point halfway along and opt for a shorter 3-hour hike to the guesthouse.

best places to visit in china with family

SHANGRI-LA, YUNNAN PROVINCE

The fabled  Shangri-La  is located up north near the Tibetan border, and is extremely Tibetan in culture. The mountain ranges are huge and snowy, the grasslands vast, and if you travel from May to June, grasslands are covered in a carpet of flowers. Horseback riding tours are a fun way to explore the countryside, and village visits provide interesting insight into the daily lives and culture of the local people. Wild mushroom picking can also be done in the hills during certain times of the year.

best places to visit in china with family

YANGSHUO, GUANGXI PROVINCE

One of the most picturesque regions in China,  Yangshuo ’s karst mountains and rivers feature on just about every Chinese scroll and can also be found on the country’s RMB 20 notes. The area is dotted with rice paddies, lined with paved roads that are perfect for biking along. The area is also famous for its rock climbing; Beginner walls are available for children as well as more difficult routes for adults. Families can embark on the short hike up Moon Hill to look out over the valley as well as raft down the Li River (the bamboo variety, not the white water version!). Take a family cooking class and learn to prepare local dishes such as egg wrapped dumplings and beer fish. Exploring Yangshuo’s Reed Flute Cave is also a cool way to spend an afternoon looking at the cave’s stalactites and stalagmites, and creating light games across the cave walls with your flashlights.

best places to visit in china with family

CHENGDU, SICHUAN PROVINCE

Pandas are synonymous with Sichuan province, and a visit to the Bi Feng Xia Panda Centre outside Chengdu is an absolute must. A two hour drive outside the city centre, the facility has just under 100 pandas, and the kids will love seeing them rolling around, lazily gnawing their bamboo and interacting with their handlers. If you’re lucky, there will be baby pandas at the reserve, and the little red pandas are equally as adorable. A visit to the People’s Park enables you to observe and interact with the locals as they go about practicing Tai Chi, Kung Fu, sword dancing, meditation, gymnastics and even “ear cleaning” – quite possibly one of the most strange and unique things you will see. Chengdu is also famous for its street food, and kids will love going from stall to stall gaping at and hopefully sampling some of the stranger snacks on offer.

best places to visit in china with family

XI’AN, SHAANXI PROVINCE

A visit to see the famed Terracotta Warriors is made more interesting for the little ones by letting them make their own statuettes after they’ve viewed the real soldiers. Embark on an early morning bike or cart tour to discover  Xi’an  without the crowds or traffic jams. The tandem bikes on offer are great for those with younger kids, and it’s a great way to get them to enjoy sites such as the unique city walls that were built during the Ming Dynasty. Take part in a calligraphy course, introducing kids to one of the bedrocks of Chinese culture, or head out on a day trip to nearby Mount Huashan, hiking to the summit for spectacular (albeit often crowded) views.

If your dream vacation involves posting up on a postcard-worthy beach, the Maldives is for you. This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. The best way to experience this slice of paradise? Stay in one of many overwater bungalows , of course.

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

best places to visit in china with family

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, visitors can take traditional, wooden longtail boat tours to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay to see the surreal limestone rock formations that rise from the sea. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

best places to visit in china with family

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

best places to visit in china with family

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

best places to visit in china with family

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

best places to visit in china with family

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto.

best places to visit in china with family

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

best places to visit in china with family

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

best places to visit in china with family

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

12 Best Small Towns to Live in the U.S.

From California to Vermont, these small towns are some of the country's most sought-after communities to call home, according to real estate experts.

While big cities may be an essential part of our country's economic and social life, small towns are becoming an increasingly popular option for settling down. In fact, in 2020, almost half of Americans said they preferred to live in a small or rural town, a significant increase since 2018, according to a Gallup Poll .

The best small towns in America provide residents with many of the amenities and conveniences of larger urban areas, like hospitals, schools, cultural and sports activities, and entertainment. And while those often come at a much smaller scale, the benefits of living in a small town are many — a stronger sense of community, tranquility, less stress, and often a much more scenic setting immersed in nature that encourages an active lifestyle.

Here, we rounded up 12 of the best — and most sought-after — small U.S. towns with fewer than 25,000 residents to consider for your next forever home.

    Incline Village, Nevada

    Gado/Getty Images

This upscale community on the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe is far from being just another resort town. Unlike similar vacation destinations, Incline Village has everything its approximately 9,000 residents need to live here full-time: a hospital, pharmacies, schools, grocery stores, a university campus (University of Nevada, Reno), and a library.

Of course, there's no shortage of recreational amenities such as private beaches, a boat launch, pools, golf courses, and even an in-town ski resort, Diamond Peak. Residents also enjoy no income tax and relatively low property taxes, according to Sierra Sotheby's International Realty agent David Duffie.

"The most popular neighborhoods are near the lake or in areas with great lake views," added Duffie. "These include Lakefront, Mill Creek, and Lakeview subdivisions for lake proximity, and the Eastern Slope for views."

However, relocating to Incline Village isn't cheap. According to Zillow , the median home value is $1,411,680.

As the gateway to two of the country's most beautiful national parks — Arches and Canyonlands — Moab benefits from a stunning setting comprising mountain peaks, desert views, and the Colorado River. Understandably, outdoor recreation is a major pastime in this town of about 5,000 residents. But its main drag is also lined with shops and restaurants, attracting visitors from all over the world.

"The market in Moab has undergone a correction and is more balanced now — it continues to move at a slow but steady pace, and has become more favorable for buyers. It's a great time to look at options in our unique, recreation-rich area of Utah," Becky Wells of Summit Sotheby's International Realty said, explaining that most people prefer to live in town to stay close to its amenities and participate in cultural events.

"Castle Valley is another lovely area to the northeast of Moab, which offers a quieter, rural vibe and beautiful scenery that's been featured in many movies," added Wells.

Currently, Moab homes list for a median price of $563,356, according to Zillow .

    North Potomac, Maryland

North Potomac is one of the most desirable communities near Washington, D.C. The town offers easy access to many parks and natural recreational areas, as well as top-notch shopping, dining, and world-class entertainment. Niche.com ranked it the second-best place to live in Maryland for its excellent public schools, family-friendly amenities, and diversity. The town is also home to the headquarters of Montgomery County Road Runners Club, one of the largest and most active running clubs in the country.

"The area experienced huge growth and resurgence during the COVID-19 era, as many Washingtonians flocked to the close suburb given most homes exist on larger-than-average lots. This growth trajectory has no signs of slowing down," Yianni Konstantopoulos, an agent at TTR Sotheby's International Realty , explained, noting the average price point for a single-family home hovers around $875,000 to $925,000, but potential buyers can also find townhouses in the $485,000 to $525,000 range.

"Imagine living in a place where every stroll is a scenic journey to the sea. Carmel-by-the-Sea offers an enchanting lifestyle characterized by its walkability, strong sense of community, and vibrant local businesses," Susan Cardinale of Sotheby's International Realty — Carmel Brokerage told Travel + Leisure.

Described as " a village in a forest overlooking a white-sand beach ," Carmel has just about 3,000 residents and offers an abundance of natural sights and sounds. Living here has its quirks — homes don't have standard geographical addresses , but proper names. However, its beauty hasn't remained unnoticed, and real estate does come at a steep price.

"The average sales price for June 2024 was $2.53 million, with the year-to-date average being just over $3 million," added Cardinale.

    Taos, New Mexico

    Kathleen Messmer/Travel + Leisure

Nestled at 6,969 feet in northern New Mexico, Taos is a unique town that blends Native American heritage and culture, art, and spectacular landscapes spanning snowcapped peaks, lush forests, and high desert views. It's home to a vibrant artistic community dating back to the end of the 19th century, when the Taos Society of Artists was founded. Since then, many creatives have found refuge — and inspiration — here, transforming the small mountain town into a world-famous art enclave with a historic plaza, many galleries, and museums. Outdoor enthusiasts will equally thrive here as the Southern Rocky Mountains offer a plethora of four-season activities like skiing , mountain biking, zip lining, and golfing.

"Real estate [...] includes small, traditional, 'adobe-style' homes both in town and rural, as well as condominium and part-time resident properties close to activities," Lisa M. Bybee of Sotheby's International Realty — Santa said.

Current median home prices are below the $500,000 mark, at $456,804, according to Zillow , down almost 10 percent since last year.

    Beaufort, South Carolina

The second-oldest city in South Carolina is rooted in history and Southern culture. Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, so residents enjoy access to many beaches (Hunting Island State Park, just 20 miles east, is a favorite) and plenty of watersports year-round. Those who dream of waterfront living are also in luck.

"The extensive range of waterfront and golf communities provide resort-style living almost everywhere, and the interior island neighborhoods span from upscale, custom-designed homes to beautifully comfortable and friendly havens," Amy Lance Leath, a broker with Daniel Ravenel Sotheby's International Realty , explained. "Popular neighborhoods at the higher end of the market include the historic district in downtown Beaufort, Fripp Island, Distant Island, Habersham, Dataw Island Club, Coosaw Point, and Newpoint, with several up-and-coming neighborhoods such as Cat Island, the town of Port Royal, and other nearby areas.

Best of all, homes in the area are cheaper than the national median — $401,858, according to Zillow , (compared to $420,800).

    Rutland, Vermont

    DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

"The beautiful skyline of landmark buildings, set against the backdrop of the stunning Green Mountains, consistently leaves newcomers in awe But, it's the people that make this gem of a place so special, so friendly, and always looking to help," Freddie Ann Bohlig, a local real estate agent at Four Seasons Sotheby's International Realty , said of this small Vermont town with a population of about 15,000. It has a vibrant downtown area, farmers markets, a theater, restaurants, and shops.

"We're conveniently located near the largest ski area in the northeast [Killington Resort] and the largest freshwater lake in Vermont [Lake Bomoseen], offering a wide range of activities that cater to diverse lifestyles," added Bohlig.

She explained the town gained popularity with families and young professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, but housing has remained affordable, with median home values just below $270,000 .

    Berry Hill, Tennessee

    Art Wager/Getty Images

Berry Hill may take up less than a single square mile, but this town — about 15 minutes south of Nashville — is home to dozens of recording studios and music publishers, in addition to hundreds of businesses. The destination was ranked best for young professionals in Tennessee and also has its residents within walking distance of Geodis Park, Nashville's newest sports venue.

Housing options vary, accommodating a diverse range of budgets.

"You can buy a one-bedroom condo for around $250,000 or spend close to a million dollars for new construction or for a teardown to build multiple dwellings, which has happened a lot lately," Blair Blaylock Teasdale, managing broker at Crye-Leike Real Estate Services , said.

A growing number of people are taking notice of the town. "Going forward, the music industry is looking to double down on the area as Universal Music Group eyes the opening of its $250-million production campus, just announced last year ," Jackson Zeitlin of Zeitlin Sotheby's International Realty added.

    Williamsburg, Virginia

    Thomas Faull/Getty Images

Historic Williamsburg , sitting along the banks of the James River, was the first English settlement in the New World, dating back to 1633. Today, the destination offers a captivating blend of history, culture, entertainment, and natural attractions. The community is also famously home to our country's second-oldest university, William & Mary. The town is a 2.5-hour drive from Washington, D.C., and around an hour from Virginia's capital, Richmond, providing residents with even more urban amenities and conveniences.

"Many residents choose to live near Colonial Williamsburg, where history comes alive every day. Kingsmill, Ford's Colony, and Governor's Land are popular residential areas, each offering a unique lifestyle. These communities boast golf courses, social clubs, and amenities that cater to discerning residents," Mike Stevens of The Steele Group Sotheby's International Realty said.

    Branson, Missouri

    Christine_Kohler/Getty Images

"I love to travel, but I'm always so happy to get home to Branson," April Redford, a real estate agent at ReeceNichols , said about this Ozark town of about 13,000 residents, which is known for its natural beauty and affordable real estate market .

" Branson is perfect because whether you want tons of action and activity, or you just want to sit in the shade by the creek and skip rocks, there's something for everyone," she added.

Like many mountain communities that experienced enormous interest and growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, Redford explained that the real estate market has slowed down and "isn't so rushed." However, even after the increased demand, one thing hasn't changed: Branson's affordability.

The current median home value in this town is $262,938, according to Zillow .

    Davenport, Florida

    rustycanuck/Getty Images

This central Florida town, 35 miles southwest of Orlando, buzzes with activity and growth .

"On the north side, you're right in the mix — close to the amusement parks, water parks, lots of great retail centers, and things to do year-round. South Davenport is definitely more of your local vibe," Renee Anthony, a realtor at Watson Realty Corp. , explained.

Thanks to the town's proximity to two major urban centers, and its affordable real estate market — the median home value is about $370,000 — many families have relocated here, about 100 per month . Anthony noted there are lots of resale and new construction homes at great prices.

    Whitefish, Montana

    George Rose/Getty Images

With world-class skiing in the winter and plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and boating in the summer, Whitefish is an outdoor lover's dream. And while the town welcomes many visitors, its close-knit community of full-time residents remains its best feature, according to local real estate agent Amanda Kelly of Windermere Real Estate .

"The folks here are genuinely welcoming, making it easy to feel at home. It's the perfect mix of small-town charm and outdoor beauty," she said. "There's always something happening, whether it's a farmers market, a local festival, or just hanging out downtown at one of the great restaurants or shops."

13 of the Most Amazing and Best Places to Visit in Maine

F rom the rocky coastline to the numerous beautiful lighthouses, Maine has certainly earned its Vacationland nickname. It’s a beautiful state with lots of different places to visit on vacation – including several gorgeous coastal towns.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. A purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us. I’ve received complimentary/discounted admission, hotels, and transportation (on the Amtrak Downeaster) to some of these locations (and have paid for others), but all opinions are my own.

I generally recommend visiting Maine in the summer months of July and August for the warmest weather – it’s the best time if you want to experience outdoor activities. We have also enjoyed trips to Kittery, Portland, and Freeport in the winter when they were less crowded. If you do that, however, you won’t be able to do any water activities.

For most places to visit in Maine, you’ll need to drive. There is the Amtrak Downeaster train as well. It travels from Boston, MA’s North Station to the following station stops:

    • Brunswick, ME
    • Freeport, ME
    • Portland, ME
    • Old Orchard, ME
    • Haverhill, MA

This is a traditional train, not an auto train, so you won’t have access to your vehicle when you are on vacation. Some places in Maine are very walkable, however, so depending on where you go, you may not need it.

These places can also be great road trips from Boston if you are visiting Massachusetts for summer vacation. While we’d recommend staying overnight, you could always visit some of the more southern locations for just a day trip. You could also visit multiple locations on a road trip.

The Best Places to Visit in Maine

    Portland, maine.

Portland Maine is one of my favorite road trips from our home in Massachusetts. This waterfront city (the largest city in Maine) is a big foodie destination, with many delicious restaurants , great breweries, and unique cafes. Go hungry, because there are so many things you’ll want to eat.

The city offers several popular districts, including Old Port along Casco Bay. This picturesque area of the city is where you’ll find many restaurants, as well as where you can take a boat tour in season. Looking to try some of that famous Maine lobster? We recommend the Highroller Lobster Co, a fun, casual restaurant in the center of the city where you can get lobster rolls and other lobster dishes.

There are also several wonderful museums in the city, including the Portland Museum of Art, the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine (which recently moved from the Arts District to Thompson’s Point), and the Tate House Museum.

Like shopping? There are many small gift, book, food clothing, and souvenir shops around town. Portland is a great place to shop for gifts. Visiting in the summer? Don’t miss seeing a Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field.

If you choose a downtown hotel, you can park at your hotel and just leave your car there most of the time. Portland is very walkable and also has an airport and an Amtrak train station if you’d prefer to travel that way. It’s a little less than a 2-hour drive from downtown Boston.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Portland .

Driving to Portland? Don’t miss a stop at the beautiful Portland Head Lighthouse, which is a great photo opportunity. It’s a popular place, and you’ll often see photos of the lighthouse on guidebooks and postcards.

    Kittery, Maine

Located right over the New Hampshire border is Kittery Maine, a coastal town that is most known for its great outlet malls. They are spaced out across several different outlet complexes along Route 1. Outlets include New Balance, Lululemon, Crate and Barrel, and Adidas.

In addition to the outlets, there are some fun shops like Yummies (a store filled with all sorts of candy) and the Kittery Trading Post.

Kittery also offers several restaurants, as well as Fort McClary State Park, Take Flight Adventures, Badger’s Island, and the Isles of Shoals.

    Old Orchard Beach, Maine

Love the beach? Travel to Old Orchard Beach, located on the Maine coastline. It is a traditional beach town, offering activities like mini-golf, paddleboarding, boat tours, and more.

It’s also home to Palace Playland, New England’s only amusement park located on the beachfront. It offers an arcade, kiddie rides, and traditional midway rides and is a popular tourist attraction.

The area features several motels, family hotels, and inns, as well as nearby campgrounds. These are mostly independent motels, rather than chain hotels .

    Freeport, Maine

Freeport Maine is most popular as the hotel of L.L.Bean. In addition to the flagship store, there is also the L.L. Bean Outlet, the L.L. Bean Home Store, L.L. Bean Bike, Boat, and Ski Store, and the L.L. Bean Hunting and Fishing Store.

But, there are also lots of other outlets beyond L.L. Bean in Freeport. These include Sperry, Vineyard Vines, and Coach. You’ll also find independent shops and small chains, offering toys, bath and body products, art, and gifts. Don’t miss a stop at Wicked Whoppies, where you can purchase Maine’s signature Whoppie Pies.

Other activities in the area include boat cruises along Casco Bay, as well as Wolfe’s Neck Center. This farm offers animals, workshops, bike and kayak rentals, and much more.

Free parking is available through Freeport. There’s also an Amtrak train station.

    Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Boothbay Harbor is a popular summer Maine vacation destination. This small town offers small shops with art, pottery, clothing, and more. There are also waterfront local restaurants where you can get Maine lobster and other seafood.

One of the most popular attractions in Boothbay Harbor is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. It’s open seasonally, and kids will love seeing the huge troll statues located throughout the gardens.

These five trolls, called the Guardians of the Seeds, are made of recycled materials. They are scattered throughout the gardens, and some require a bit of walking to see. You can use the maps provided by the gardens to find them – they are marked on the map with large footprints.

You may also want to take a boat trip in the area. Cap’N’Fish’s Cruises works with the National Audubon to showcase the Audubon’s Puffin Project. During the cruise, you’ll see wildlife, lighthouses, and more – it’s a great excursion for nature lovers.

The Maine State Aquarium is another popular attraction. It’s run by the state but was closed for renovations this past year.

    Kennebunkport, Maine

Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Maine have long been popular summer vacation destinations. Here, you can visit beaches and take a boat tour of the area. There’s also Dock Square, offering shops and restaurants, and the Seashore Trolley Museum.

If you are visiting without kids, we definitely recommend staying at the White Barn Inn . This beautiful inn is quaint and cozy, but the real draw here is the amazing restaurant.

    Ogunquit, Maine

Ogunquit Maine, a trendy and artsy beach town, is one of my favorite places in Maine to visit. I’d recommend visiting in July and August when the weather is perfect for a day at the sandy beach.

Ogunquit is very walkable, with limited parking. So I recommend staying at a hotel/resort in the downtown area so that you can just leave your car and walk. There’s also a trolley that visits the popular attractions during the summer months.

In addition to visiting Ogunquit Beach, you’ll want to walk along Marginal Way to Perkins Cove, a small waterfront area with gift shops, ice cream shops, and restaurants. Don’t forget to stop and view the beautiful scenes as you walk. I really love taking photos as I walk on Marginal Way.

If you enjoy theater, the nonprofit Ogunquit Playhouse offers shows throughout the season. You can see their upcoming schedule on their website .

During our visit to Ogunquit, we enjoyed staying at the Meadowmere Resort . It’s located in a great spot, and you can walk to Ogunquit Beach, Perkins Cove, and Marginal Way.

    Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor Maine on Mount Desert Island is one of the most popular summer vacation destinations in New England, due to its proximity to Acadia National Park (the main attraction in the area). Like other places to visit in Maine, we recommend visiting in the warmer summer months so that you can take advantage of all of the activities.

There are a variety of different ways to explore the area. Oli’s Trolley offers tours of Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, and downtown Bar Harbor. This guided tour is extremely popular, and we recommend booking your tickets in advance.

There are also Acadian Boat Tours, offering fishing excursions, guided tours, sunset cruises, and more. You can also see nearby lighthouses and puffins, depending on the excursion booked. There are lots of fun things to do near Acadia .

    Sebago Lake, Maine

We loved our visit to Migis Lodge located right on Sebago Lake. This family wilderness resort offers traditional lake activities, a kids’ club, delicious food, and beautiful accommodations.

Migis is open in the summer, and it’s very popular. Often guests book for the same week and cabin year after year, so you’ll want to make a reservation as soon as possible if you are interested in attending. It’s an all-inclusive resort (except for alcohol), and once you are there you won’t have to leave.

Other Places to Visit in Maine

In addition to the places we’ve highlighted here, there are other points of interest to visit in Maine. These include:

    • Camden Hills State Park (Camden Maine)
    • Moosehead Lake and the Kennebec River
    • Cape Neddick Lighthouse in York
    • Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park

In L.A.’s tough housing market, cramped family adds ADU rather than move

A couple outside their home, ADU and swimming pool

When Serban and Laura Gudino-Penciu purchased a 900-square-foot bungalow in Eagle Rock in 2004, it was just the two of them.

The Pencius’ 1924 house is on a charming street filled with 100-year-old homes and walking distance to stores and restaurants. But after the birth of their two sons, who are now 12 and 15, and Serban’s transition to entrepreneurial freelance work from a corporate job, the family of four needed more live-work space.

“As the kids were getting older, we wanted another bathroom and some communal space, but also space for them to lounge around and not have us hover over them,” says Laura, who works in sales for a pharmaceutical company. “But we didn’t want so much space that we wouldn’t be around each other. We didn’t want to disconnect.”

A one-car garage before being converted into an ADU.

Though laws have made obtaining permits to build accessory dwelling units easier in California, the couple was shocked at bids of more than $150,000 when they looked into converting their one-car garage into an ADU in 2020.

Architect Alex Solbes, who offered a bid, isn’t surprised. “I’ve had a lot of interest in ADUs, and people have this perception that they are less costly , and they really aren’t,” he says. “Construction costs went up during the pandemic, and they are still high. I think it’s the new normal. People need to realize they are still building a structure.”

An old blue bungalow with stairs

So the couple decided to do what many people with starter homes do: sell their home and move to a larger one in their neighborhood.

But their house hunt didn’t work out quite as planned.

The neighborhood had changed dramatically in the 15 years since they purchased their two-bedroom home for $385,000. “It’s unattainable,” Serban says of finding a place in Los Angeles, where the average price for a typical home is about $973,000, according to Zillow . “We were in a situation where we would have to spend a million dollars on a house that needed work.”

“We kept getting outbid and priced out,” adds Laura. “We decided to go back to the drawing board.”

A white bungalow and front yard

To help them expand their small floor plan and convert the garage into an ADU, the couple hired Solbes of AOS Works: Architecture & Design, who understood their desire to brighten the dark interiors and create family and work space.

‘We just can’t afford to live here.’ Housing costs are driving people out of Orange County, poll says

More than a third of Orange County residents are actively considering moving away, a UC Irvine poll found. The high costs of housing and basic necessities are top reasons.

“Natural light was so important to us,” Laura says. “That was one of our most important parameters.”

Solbes ultimately added 740 square feet to the main house, including a new master bedroom with a bathroom and walk-in closet, laundry, family room, office and powder room — nearly doubling the home’s floor plan in the process. (The couple also remodeled the kitchen, living room, dining room, two bedrooms and bathroom to make it more family friendly.)

A blue couch facing a wall unit inside a family room

Behind the house, the garage next to the existing swimming pool was converted into a 250-square-foot ADU so that Serban would have a place to work. The tiny ADU features a kitchen with apartment-size appliances (but no dishwasher), a bathroom and doors that open to the pool area, which make the space feel larger than it is.

To combat the loss of the garage, Solbes designed a storage area that is attached to the ADU and is accessible from the outside. Serban admits it was tough to give up the garage, even though there is room to park one car in the driveway. “We still haven’t gotten rid of everything that was in there,” he says.

While the front of the house fits in with the other bungalows on the street, Solbes designed the back to be more contemporary, achieving the light and space the family wanted.

A studio ADU with a small kitchen, TV and couch

High windows bring in light and provide privacy, left. The bathroom of the ADU, right.

“The addition allowed us to have much higher ceiling heights and bi-folding doors that completely open up to allow a greater connection between the family room and the outdoors,” Solbes says.

In what the architect describes as “a shift,” the iconic California bungalow in front stretches into an entirely new form in the back. “There’s an evolution of form,” he says. “If you see these three masses, they are interlocking, but the family room’s high ceilings enhance the connection to the yard and allow light in — the traditional house in front challenges that.” The primary bedroom also opens out onto a deck further emphasizing the connection to the backyard.

As longtime residents of Eagle Rock, the couple felt it was important to preserve the front of their house and the character of their street. “We didn’t want a McMansion,” says Laura. “We just wanted a little more space and a home that fits in with the existing structures.”

The cabinets in the family room and kitchen were finished with an environmentally friendly reconstituted wood veneer.

The fireplace tile in the living room is representative of the bungalow’s roots.

A master bedroom overlooking a deck and yard

Thanks to the ADU’s smooth concrete floors, the family could easily use the structure as a pool house. But now that Serban runs his digital marketing company and a real estate investment firm from home, he uses the ADU as an office.

“I am always on calls and some of the videos are loud so I transitioned to the ADU,” he says. “It opens up, so we can do things as a family anytime we want, but most of the time, it’s my office. I can work at 1 in the morning and not wake anyone up.”

Sometimes, Laura says with a laugh, she has to text him “Dinner is ready.”

Although Solbes and landscape designer Roy Altaras found it challenging to fit everything — including a new deck and firepit — on a standard-size lot with a swimming pool, the family is thrilled with the thoughtful transformation.

“We wanted a working backyard,” Laura says of their indoor-outdoor lifestyle. “We love the extra usable space. We spend a lot of time outdoors and the ADU falls in line with that. Sometimes, we watch games in the ADU. Or we can turn on the firepit. I hosted my book club on the deck recently. It’s all easily accessible from the main house.”

Omega Contractors finished the project in 2022 after 14 months of work. The cost of the ADU, not including appliances, fixtures and accessories (or the remodel to the main house) was about $175,000.

When asked how the addition and ADU have affected their family, Laura says it has “changed how we live.”

“The kids can have friends over, and we can hear what’s happening but give them their space,” Serban says. “They can have fun without feeling like their parents always watch them. It’s hard to do that in a small house.”

    Laura agrees.

“This is now our forever home,” she says. “We have everything we need.”

Perseid meteor shower 2024 peaks this weekend. Here's how to see summer's best 'shooting stars'

Find a spot with a wide-open sky view and no late-night lights nearby, lie back and get comfortable.

a streak of light crosses the night sky

Every August, just when many people go vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower makes its appearance: The Perseids.

This year, the Perseid meteor shower should reach its peak during the overnight hours of late Sunday night into early Monday morning (Aug. 11-12), when there is almost no moon, making the late-night sky nice and dark for shooting star spectators and counters. The first quarter moon sets around 11:20 p.m. local daylight time, leaving the sky nicely dark thereafter. Some Perseids do appear during the evening, but the shower is always better from about 11 p.m. or midnight until the dawn's early light.

Or, to put it another way, expect greater numbers of meteors to be evident during the pre-dawn hours because this is when your side of Earth turns to face the oncoming meteors more directly.

You can also watch the Perseid meteor shower online for free this weekend courtesy of astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project. The first livestream will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 11 (0100 GMT on Aug. 12,) and the second will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 12 (0100 GMT on Aug. 13.), weather permitting.

During those after-midnight hours the shower's radiant point (the point from which it appears to originate), located between the Perseus constellation and the 'W' of Cassiopeia , will be getting progressively higher in the northeast — so meteors should flash across all parts of the sky at a rate of about one every minute or two (as seen by a single observer).

That, anyway, is the prediction if your sky is good and dark. But even if you live under moderate light pollution, as unfortunately, most of us do, you can catch at least the brightest of the Perseids. They have often been described in astronomy journals as including "many bright and fragmenting meteors" that leave persistent trains in their wake.

an illustration of a starry night sky

Earth should go through the thickest part of this "old faithful" of meteor showers for many hours centered around 1400 UTC on Aug. 12, which is 10 a.m. on that date Eastern Daylight Time, which is during the daytime across all of North America. So, for meteor watchers here, the night before and perhaps even after could be equally good. Fortunately, the Perseids stay active — about one-quarter their peak strength — for several days before and a day or two after their peak, and an occasional one may be seen almost anytime during the month of August.

A Perseid is one whose path, if traced backward across the sky, intersects a spot between the constellations Perseus and Cassiopeia. Other "sporadic" meteors traveling in random directions occur once every 5 or 10 minutes. Two much weaker showers are also active at this time of the year , the Delta Aquarids and Kappa Cygnids.

    Lay back, relax, and wait

You'll need no experience to watch the Perseids. Just find a spot with a wide-open sky view and no late-night lights nearby. Bundle up warmly (it can sometimes get chilly even on summer nights), lie back on a ground pad or in a sleeping bag or even better, on a reclining lawn chair, and watch the stars. Also cover exposed parts of your body with mosquito repellent so you won't get bit.

Be patient, and give your eyes sufficient time to dark adapt. The direction to watch is not necessarily toward Perseus but wherever your sky is darkest, probably straight up.

The Perseids are the ionization trails made by little bits of debris from comet 109/P Swift-Tuttle , streaking into Earth's upper atmosphere at 37 miles (60 km) per second. The Perseids were especially dramatic in the early-to-mid 1990s surrounding the year of Swift-Tuttle's most recent return (in December 1992). Since then, however, they've reverted to normal. The comet isn't due back until August in the year 2126.

    Startling occurrences

    But surprises can always happen.

On the morning of Aug. 14, 2021, the Perseids displayed an unexpected outburst of meteors between 06:00 and 09:00 UT (2 to 5 a.m. EDT). The cause of this outburst is currently unknown but is probably the result of an unknown filament of comet debris produced by Swift-Tuttle as it raced through the inner solar system many centuries ago.

In an announcement on Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Circular #5016 , the maximum zenithal hourly rate was estimated to be somewhere between 130 and 210, plus or minus 20. Amazing numbers considering that rates are normally 50% lower each preceding night after maximum but these rates are two to three times more than was seen during the expected maximum on the night of Aug. 12-13, 2021.

Four years from now "might" bring a truly amazing Perseid display, as some meteor experts are predicting that Earth will interact with a thick knot or clump of meteoric material shed by comet Swift-Tuttle during the 15th century, that possibly could produce a short-lived display of many hundreds of meteors per hour.

a streak of light zooms among the stars in the night sky

    Defying predictions

Sometimes, even in years that are deemed favorable for Perseid viewing, sky watchers report seeing only a half or a third as many meteors that were predicted — and yet others report up to twice as many! It has been suggested that the stream of Perseid particles, strung out along its orbit around the sun, has a complex filamentary structure with gaps and rich spots.

Complicating the situation is the fact that some people's eyes seem better suited for meteor work than others.

     — Perseid meteor shower returns to our skies this month to kick off summer 'shooting star' season

Regardless of your local viewing circumstances, each year the appearance of the Perseids give many people a reason to head outside and gaze upward at the night sky. Even if you see only a few "shooting stars," all it takes is catching sight of one outstandingly bright meteor to make the viewing experience worthwhile.

A final incentive is to note that next year the moon will be at a waning gibbous phase only a few days past full and will flood the sky with bright light, squelching all but the brightest Perseid streaks. So, take advantage of the favorable conditions provided to us this year.

To one and all we wish good luck and clear skies!

Why Republicans are calling Walz 'Tampon Tim' — and why Democrats embrace it

For more on the 2024 election, head to the NPR Network's live updates page.

Republican critics of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz have given him a new nickname: “Tampon Tim.”

After Vice President Harris announced her pick , Stephen Miller, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump, tweeted , “She actually chose Tampon Tim.” Chaya Raichik, who runs the far-right social media account Libs of TikTok, photoshopped Walz’s face onto a Tampax box.

    #TamponTim pic.twitter.com/eBPyEOSWPC — Chaya Raichik (@ChayaRaichik10) August 6, 2024

“Tampon Tim is hands down the best political nickname ever,” tweeted conservative commentator Liz Wheeler. “It’s so… savagely effective. In one word tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about Tim Walz’s dangerous radicalism.”

The moniker refers to a law that Walz, the governor of Minnesota, signed last year, requiring public schools to provide menstrual products — including pads and tampons — to students in 4th through 12th grades.

The products are free for students, with the state paying about $2 per pupil to keep them stocked throughout the school year.

Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris applauds as her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, speaks at Temple University's Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Takeaways from Tim Walz's introduction to the national stage

The law, which was the result of years of advocacy by students and their allies, took effect on Jan. 1, though students say the rollout has so far been smoother in some school districts than others .

It makes Minnesota one of 28 states (and Washington D.C.) that have passed laws aimed at giving students access to menstrual products in schools, according to the Alliance for Period Supplies.

The issue enjoys broad popular support: 30 states have eliminated state sales tax on menstrual products, and Trump himself signed a 2018 package that requires federal prisons to provide them.

But Republicans appear to be taking issue with the wording of the legislation, which says the products must be available “to all menstruating students in restrooms regularly used by students.”

Some Minnesota Republicans initially tried to limit the initiative to female-assigned and gender-neutral bathrooms, but were unsuccessful. Even the author of that amendment ultimately voted for the final version of the bill, saying his family members “felt like it was an important issue I should support.”

The bill’s inclusive language reflects that not all people who menstruate are women, and not all women get periods, which was important to those who lobbied for the legislation.

“It will make it more comfortable for everyone … then people can use whatever restroom they want without being worried,” Bramwell Lundquist, then 15, told MPR News last year.

But some in the Republican Party — which has increasingly promoted anti-transgender policies and rhetoric — see that aspect of the bill as a reason to attack Walz.

“Tim Walz is a weird radical liberal,” the MAGA War Room account posted on X, formerly Twitter. “What could be weirder than signing a bill requiring schools to stock tampons in boys' bathrooms?”

Tim Walz has been praised online by supporters for his folksy, midwestern demeanor. Here, Walz and his son, Gus, celebrate while entering his election night party on Aug. 14, 2018 in St Paul, Minnesota.

'Midwestern Nice' and 'Fun Dad' posts abound after Tim Walz is named VP pick

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt made a similar argument in a Tuesday appearance on Fox News .

“As a woman, I think there is no greater threat to our health than leaders who support gender-transition surgeries for young minors, who support putting tampons in men’s bathrooms in public schools,” she said. “Those are radical policies that Tim Walz supports. He actually signed a bill to do that.”

LGBTQ rights groups have cheered Walz’s selection and praised his track record, which includes a 2023 executive order making Minnesota one of the first states to safeguard access to gender-affirming health care, as dozens of states seek to ban it .

Walz, who once earned the title “ most inspiring teacher ” at the high school where he taught and coached football, hasn’t responded publicly to the “Tampon Tim” taunts. But he had strong words for his Republican opponents on Tuesday night.

“I'll just say it: Donald Trump and JD Vance are creepy and, yes, weird,” he tweeted , repeating the put-down he helped popularize in recent days. “We are not going back.”

Many on the left see “Tampon Tim” as a compliment

Democratic Minnesota Rep. Sandra Feist, the chief sponsor of the bill in the state House, sold it as a "wise investment" , explaining to her colleagues last year that “one out of every 10 menstruating youth miss school” due to a lack of access to menstrual products and resources.

She defended it again in a tweet on Wednesday morning, saying she was grateful to have partnered with Walz to address period poverty .

“This law exemplifies what we can accomplish when we listen to students to address their needs,” she wrote. “Excited to see MN representation at the top of the ticket!”

Feist ended the tweet with the hashtag #TamponTim.

Other Democratic figures have embraced both the hashtag and the policy behind it.

The case for free tampons and pads in schools

Many social media users responded that providing tampons in schools isn’t the bad thing that Republicans are making it out to be — and in fact, they see it as the opposite.

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said it was “nice of the Trump camp to help publicize Gov. Tim Walz’s compassionate and common-sense policy,” adding, “Let’s do this everywhere.”

Former Georgia State Rep. Bee Nguyen said Walz, as a former teacher, understands how the lack of access to menstrual products impacts educational outcomes.

“This makes me an even bigger fan of Tampon Tim,” she added.

Nearly 1 in 4 students have struggled to afford period products in the United States, according to a 2023 study commissioned by Thinx and PERIOD. Experts say period poverty is more than just a hassle : It’s an issue of public and personal health, dignity and more.

The Minnesota students who lobbied for the bill testified last year about having to miss class because they were unable to afford menstrual products, being distracted from schoolwork and tests and feeling that adults didn’t take their concern seriously.

“We cannot learn while we are leaking,” high school student Elif Ozturk, then 16, told a legislative hearing in 2023. “How do we expect our students to carry this burden with them during the school day and still perform well? The number one priority should be to learn, not to find a pad.”

China tied the U.S. on Olympic golds — here's how

PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games , Americans dominated . Team USA sent by far the most athletes. Hordes of stars-and-stripes-clad tourists made the trip across the Atlantic. And celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Lady Gaga became the Games’ cultural icons.

There is one crucial metric in which the U.S. did not smash the competition, however: gold medals.

With all the events completed, China tied Team USA in the medal table , with 40 golds. (While the American news media typically goes on total medals, most of the rest of the world, including Paris 2024’s official count, bases its table on golds won.)

Whereas Team USA has focused on athletics and swimming, China majors in diving , table tennis, weightlifting, shooting and badminton. In fact, around a fifth of China’s 302 golds since 1984 have come in diving. This year was no different, with China winning every diving gold available.

“I’m very proud of China and all the gold medals it has won,” said Fang Zheng, 30, a Chinese student studying in France who was lining up to watch breaking Friday. “When an athlete wins gold, it’s an honor for themselves and their families, but also the country.”

China's Chen Yiwen competes in the women's 3m springboard diving final on Aug. 9, 2024.

This year, China also made breakthroughs in disciplines typically dominated by the U.S., specifically swimming. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S.

The star of the show was Pan Zhanle, who jetted away from American Hunter Armstrong in the anchor leg, having already set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle five days before. The losing U.S. team included 10-time Olympic medalist Caeleb Dressel, who had to settle for silver.

Meanwhile, Zheng Qinwen became the first Asian tennis player to win women’s gold, and China’s winning artistic swimming score blew the U.S. and Spain out of the water. The Chinese routine, “Light of Life,” wowed the judges by creating a physical representation of the “mountain” the team had to overcome to win gold. Though Russia, long a dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped those of any competitors.

“Their execution is just out of this world,” Team USA’s Jacklyn Luu said.

China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports, including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking. Deng Yawen won gold in women’s BMX freestyle in her Olympic debut. And China also has the youngest athlete at these Games, 11-year-old skater Zheng Haohao.

China’s newfound prowess in the pool has not come without significant scrutiny , however, after it emerged that 23 swimmers — including 11 who went to Paris — tested positive for banned heart medication in 2021 but were still allowed to compete.

China’s doping agency said they had eaten contaminated food, an explanation accepted by the World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, which did not make the incident public until it was revealed by a New York Times investigation this year.

China vehemently denies allegations of doping, with a foreign ministry spokesperson telling NBC News last month that “Chinese swimmers are clean and have never feared testing.”

Men's team table tennis medal podium

It also accused the U.S. anti-doping agency, USADA, of double standards after it was revealed that the Americans had allowed athletes who tested positive from 2011 to 2014 to continue competing if they went undercover to catch other dopers.

China has also zeroed in on American sprinter Erriyon Knighton, who tested positive for the performance enhancer trenbolone in March but, like the Chinese athletes, was cleared after his country’s agency said he had eaten contaminated meat.

The current American-Chinese Olympic rivalry is part of a geopolitical sporting duopoly that has existed since around 2004. Though the U.S. tends to win, when Beijing hosted the Games in 2008, it swept the field with 51 golds to Team USA’s 36.

How it does that is no secret and in many ways is similar to what the U.S. and other countries do.

It has pumped ever more funding into the Games while focusing on specific sports that it knows will return a healthy number of honors. Having 1.4 billion people does not hurt, of course, although as India will attest (no golds, one silver and five bronzes in Paris this year), having a colossal potential talent pool does not guarantee success.

The last time an opaque, one-party state accused of running a doping program rivaled the USA in the medal table, it was the Soviet Union.

Back in those Cold War days, China’s Olympic program was still in its infancy.

China's Sun Mengya and Xu Shixiao react to winning gold in the women's canoe double 500-meter finals

After the 1949 communist revolution, Chinese leader Mao Zedong promoted exercise not only as an athletic imperative — building a strong, healthy working class and to defend the nation — but also as a cultural and political necessity. It would “serve the political purpose of building a class of citizens who were well-disciplined in both mind and body,” according to the Michigan-based nonprofit Association for Asian Studies in its journal Education About Asia .

And at the Helsinki Games in 1952, China saw just how potent a geopolitical weapon the Olympics could be. The Soviet Union achieved huge success, running the U.S. close in the medal table and showing “how a socialist country could defeat Western democratic countries on the international stage,” the essay in Education About Asia said.

China would not win its first medals for 30 more years, however, after it withdrew from the International Olympic Committee in protest over the participation of Taiwan, which it sees as a rogue province that rightfully belongs to Beijing.

The international sporting freeze began to thaw in the 1970s, first with the historic “pingpong diplomacy” of 1971, when the U.S. table tennis team became the first international sporting delegation to tour China in decades, paving the way for a visit by President Richard Nixon a year later. That direction of travel was further expedited in the late 1970s with the “reform and opening up” policies Deng Xiaoping enacted after Mao’s death.

China finally returned to the Games at Los Angeles in 1984 following an IOC agreement that said Taiwan would compete under the name “Chinese Taipei.” Beijing soon became a medal machine, climaxing at Beijing in 2008. That landmark event in the country’s modern history coincided with its meteoric economic rise as the West ailed under the financial crisis the same year.

China's Li Fabin competes in the men's 61kg weightlifting event

Amid heavy criticism, the IOC said those Games would help revolutionize politics and human rights in what was then the world’s most populous country. That never came.

Under President Xi Jinping, who came to power four years later, China has become more authoritarian , according to Western governments and watchdogs, an assessment Beijing rejects.

Today, all countries see success in the Games as a way to project power internationally. But China takes that to a whole new level, where not only are gold seen as a totem of nationalistic pride, but silvers are often lambasted on social media.

Meanwhile, its State Council has vowed to make China “a modern leading sports socialist country by 2050” and declared that its “global influence in sports should be ranked near the top globally.”

And in this new era of Sino-Western rivalry, more nationalistic elements of the Chinese media use the Olympics to portray China in a positive light against the perfidious Americans and Europeans. The doping argument at these Games has only intensified that dynamic.

“The U.S. using its hegemonic influence and power to contain China and other competitors in sports is truly a disgrace and unsportsmanlike,” sports commentator Li Xiang told the hawkish Global Times newspaper Friday. China, on the other hand, “has demonstrated charm and sportsmanship in Paris, as Chinese young athletes win friendship and respect from their rivals and foreign audiences.”
