This is the time of year to go to experience the midnight sun in cities like Helsinki and Stockholm.

The shoulder season is in March, April, September and October. You can expect chilly nights and snow in the northern parts of the region. From January to April, when the days are shorter, some attractions close for the season, but this is the best time of year to see the epic, icy landscapes of the region.

15 Baltic Cruise Travel Tips You NEED to Know

If you are considering a Baltic cruise, you probably have a lot of questions.

I’ve been on two Baltic cruises and I’d wholeheartedly recommend these itineraries . It is a beautiful part of the world.

Several things are specific to Baltic cruises that it is good to know about before you cruise.

In this post, we will explore popular questions like, When should you go? What should you pack? Which cruise lines are best and lots more.

Baltic Cruise Tip #1: Don’t Bring Every Currency

Which currencies do you need for a baltic cruise.

Many Baltic countries accept Euros while others will take local currencies such as British Pounds, Danish Krone or Swedish Krona. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in cruise ports so it may be worth putting the majority of purchases on your card.

I have been on full cruises and never once needed to use cash.

Baltic cruises visit multiple countries, all of which have their own currencies. I wouldn’t suggest that you keep withdrawing and exchanging currencies because not only is this time-consuming but you can also lose quite a bit of money if the exchange rates aren’t favourable.

In some places, countries that don’t use the Euros will actually take Euros as an alternative.

Many of the countries visited on a Baltic cruise take Euros, so I would recommend that you do take some cash in the form of Euros and use a credit or debit card in the other countries.

It’s always important to have some small coins (Euros are usually fine) for things like public toilets.

In a lot of Europe, there is a charge to use public toilets so it’s always better to keep a few Euro coins in your purse. An alternative, of course, is to find a McDonald’s or Starbucks where you’ll almost always find a toilet that you can use for free.

I recently took a Christmas Markets cruise and found the thing applies in Germany. I had to have coins for the public toilets or nip back to the ship. Luckily River Ships dock in the centre of town, so it wasn’t too far to walk!

Find out about that River cruise here:

If you do decide to take cash, make sure you read this guide which takes you through everything you may need to budget for. Some of these you may not even consider, so do make sure you have a read:

How Much Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise? Budgeting Guide

Which Countries do Baltic Cruises Visit?

The ‘Baltics’ when referenced in regards to cruising are any countries that border the Baltic Sea. Baltic cruises often visit Poland, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Denmark.

The ‘Baltic states’ are slightly different and refer to only Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Popular cruise ports include Oslo, Stockholm, Riga, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tallinn, Warnemunde, Gdansk and Hamburg,

A Typical Baltic Cruise Itinerary

A typical Baltic cruise itinerary would be either a week or two weeks long. There are frequent Baltic cruises from the UK, most of which are two weeks long and visit ports along the Baltic Sea before returning.

It is possible to take a Baltic cruise which doesn’t visit the UK, these tend to be shorter and may start somewhere like Copenhagen or Amsterdam.

Baltic Cruise StockHolm Cruise Tips

Baltic Cruise Tip #2: Book an Itinerary With Overnight Stays

It is very common for a Baltic cruise to include an overnight stay at some point of the cruise.

It is worth checking that the times of your port stay are useful for you though. I recently took another cruise which featured ‘two days in Amsterdam’ it docked at 3 pm – and left at 10 am the next day!

Celebrity Silhouette in Amsterdam

Baltic Cruise Tip #3: Prepare to be Busy!

Baltic cruises are very port intensive and will visit a new port almost every day. In a 14-night Baltic cruise you may have 2 or 3 sea days but generally speaking, as the countries are quite close together, you won’t spend a long time at sea.

Baltic cruises provide passengers with the opportunity to visit multiple countries in a relatively short period of time.

During a 14-night Baltic cruise, it is possible to visit 8 or so different countries.

If you were to try to replicate this type of trip on land, it would be very expensive and very time-consuming.

When is The Best Time to Take a Baltic Cruise?

The best time to take a Baltic cruise is in July and August. May, June, September and October are also fairly popular. Winter months are generally less desirable because the weather is poor, but cruises do still sail in the Baltics year-round.

July and August are the most expensive months, with cruises out of this season being considerably cheaper.

Baltic Cruise Tip #4: Cruise Between July and August For The Best Weather

In the summer months of July and August, there will be the greatest number of cruise lines sailing the Baltics.

This does mean that passengers have more choice of who to sail – with but it can also mean that the cruise ports are busy.

It isn’t uncommon for 3 or 4 cruise ships to dock in the same place at the same time.

Tallinn Estonia Cruise Ships

What Is The Weather Like on a Baltic Cruise?

The weather on a Baltic cruise is generally mild. In summer temperatures may rise in places to 80F but in winter temperatures can drop to 30F. Rain is common year-round.

There is no guarantee of good weather even in the summer months.

If you really do care about having warm sunny weather, the Mediterranean or Canary Islands may be a better option for you than the Baltics -that said, you could get lucky!

I’ve been on two Baltic cruises and both times we had rain almost every day. I took a two-week Marella cruise to the Baltics in 2018 and although we travelled in September, we had some really bad weather.

We had some really lovely weather too!

On a few days of the cruise, I did manage to sit out on the balcony and try to do a little bit of sunbathing. It wasn’t really ever ‘hot’ – but compared to the UK, it did feel warm!

Baltic Cruise Tip #5: Consider a Walking Tour or Bike Tour

We visited Tallinn in Estonia which was brilliant, we took a bike tour but it rained continually.

We were soaked through and the ink genuinely came off of my socks and dyed my feet funny colors.

That said, we had an amazing time and it was a great way to explore.

My coat and cardigan in the photo below aren’t usually that colour, they’re soaked. I particularly like the people in the rain ponchos in the background, I think that says a lot.

baltic cruise tallin rain bike tour

Baltic Cruise Tip #6: Pack a Waterproof Coat

On a Baltic cruise, you should pack the following:

  • A waterproof coat
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Clothing essentials
  • Any medicines needed
  • Passport/Documentation/Visa(s)
  • Travel adapters

The most important things you can pack for a Baltic cruise are a good comfortable pair of walking shoes and a coat.

Regardless of the time of year that you visit the Baltics, you may get rain, so it’s much better to be prepared.

Pack clothes which you find comfortable, as you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking.

Clothing Essentials

As far as clothes go, I’d recommend you start by packing more underwear than the number of days that you’re away, I always do this. I’m not too sure why but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Baltic Cruise Tip #7: Pack Travel Wash

If you bring travel wash on a cruise you can wash some little items in the sink if you are running low on clothes.

Cruise ships do have laundries but these can be expensive and it’s usually easier if you just want to wash a few small items, to do so in the sink. I use a travel wash, like the one below:

Dr. Beckmann Travel Wash, 100 ml

For a 14-night cruise, I always try to pack :

  • 10 t-shirts/shirts/blouses
  • 4 jeans/trousers
  • 4 shorts (if warm)
  • 6-day dresses (if warm)
  • 6 evening dresses
  • 3 hoodies/sweaters/jumpers
  • 2 smaller cardigans/cover-ups
  • 2 pairs of tights/leggings
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 2 sets of gym wear

Baltic Cruise Tip #8: Pack Multiple Pairs of Shoes

When it comes to packing, the most important thing is to pack comfortable shoes.

I’d recommend at least one or possibly two pairs of sneakers/trainers/walking boots. During my last Baltic cruise, I got so wet that it took my shoes days to dry out. Having another pair that you can change into is always a good idea.

I’d also recommend you pack another pair of flat shoes for daily walking around the ship or in port.

I usually bring a pair of lightweight (cheap) trainers/sneakers as a backup .

Packing a pair of heels or similar for evenings onboard is usually a good idea. Most cruise lines have some form of formal nights and having at least one, or maybe two pairs of ‘nice’ shoes to wear in the evenings is good.

If The Weather is Warm, Consider Sandals

If you are going to be travelling in summer, I’d recommend that you bring some sandals or flip-flops.

It may be worth packing 2 or so pairs so that you can alternate if needed.

As far as walking goes I’d say that Baltic cruises are one of the most intensive. Most countries visited on Baltic cruises are so easy to explore by foot, that it would be a shame not to because you haven’t packed the right footwear.

Baltic Cruise Tip #9: Pack a Small Umbrella

In addition to your coat, it’s probably a good idea to pack a small umbrella.

It might sound strange that I’m telling you to pack an umbrella and I’m now going to tell you to pack sunscreen but trust me, you might need that too!

The Baltics provide extremes of all weather and it can change with very little warning.

In Tallinn, Estonia, it rains roughly every 3 days – even in the summer season.

Don’t Forget The Essentials

As far as cruise essentials go, make sure that you pack things like your passport, travel documents, luggage tags, travel adapters, phone, camera, credit/debit card, chargers, medicines, and toiletries!

What Should You Do in Baltic Cruise Ports?

Of course, the activities offered do vary by cruise ports, but there are some things which you are able to do in almost all Baltic cruise ports.

Baltic Cruise Tip #10: Take a Hop-on Hop-off Bus

In almost all ports on a Baltic cruise, you’ll find Hop-on Hop-off buses. I’m personally a big fan of Hop-on Hop-off buses because they provide you with everything that you need for a day of exploring.

When you cruise, you will usually only have one day in port, so it’s important to make the most of it.

A daily Hop-on Hop-off bus ticket usually costs around $40/£30 and this is a 24-hour ticket. 48-hour and 72-hour tickets are usually available for longer stays.

Hop-on Hop-off buses allow you to explore a city on set routes.

Most Hop-on Hop-off bus providers will have a couple of routes and these are usually identified by colours or letters.

The best part about Hop-on Hop-off buses is that you can join the bus for any part of the journey you want and repeatedly get on/off the bus.

The buses usually have commentary in multiple languages so that you can learn some facts about the place that you are visiting.

I did this in Stockholm and learned that Stockholm translates to ‘Log Island’ – Fun fact!

stockholm hop on hop off bus cruise tips

Baltic Cruise Tip #11: Take a Walking Tour

There are usually walking tours you can join in most countries in the Baltic cities.

Some have a charge and some are free, on the free tours, you are usually expected to give a tip, which makes sense.

An alternative is to download a walking tour to your phone. If you’re from the UK or most of Europe you can use the mobile data on your phone in Europe at no extra cost.

Walking is one of my favorite ways to stay healthy on a cruise, many people worry about putting on weight on a cruise but to be honest I genuinely feel as though I come back healthier!

Avoid Cruise Ship Weight Gain – 7 Easy Things You Can Do

Baltic Cruise Tip #12: Use Public Transport

Most countries visited on a Baltic cruise have relatively cheap and easy-to-use public transport systems.

If there is a particular thing you want to see or do, it’s usually possible to buy a bus or train ticket and make your own way to the attraction.

You really do see the country that you’re visiting when you travel on public transport, I much prefer it to sitting on an organised bus excursion with other British people.

It’s usually a good idea to bring some cash for things like public transport, although this isn’t necessary for most places. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most ports.

Booking attractions ahead of time can also save you money, so it is worth considering this. Make the booking early in the morning once you’ve docked – just in case the cruise ship cancels the port for any reason.

Gothenburg Cruise Bus Baltic Cruise Tips

Baltic Cruise Tip #13: Consider a Cruise Line Excursion

If there is something in particular you would like to do. it might be worth considering a cruise line excursion.

Cruise line excursions can be quite expensive but they are often the easiest way to explore a place. Most cruise line excursions are based, at least in some parts, on buses.

Groups will usually be of at least 20+ passengers and you might end up following a tour guide around with a flag on a stick.

Baltic Cruise Tip #14: Consider Independent Excursions

Another option is to take independent excursions with other companies. These are often much cheaper than booking through the cruise line but it does take a bit more organisation.

There are lots and lots of companies in the Baltics which provide independent excursions.

The main downside of booking excursions independently is if your cruise port is cancelled you won’t get your money back – although some do offer a money-back guarantee.

Baltic Cruise Tip #15: Consider a Cruise With NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O, Marella or MSC

Norwegian Cruise Line , Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean, P&O, Marella , and MSC are good options for Baltic cruises. They offer itineraries in a variety of lengths starting and ending in multiple countries.

I've been on 5 MSC cruises in Europe and the US. Cruising with friends and family, I've always had a great time!

MSC Cruises

Several luxury cruise lines also cruise the Baltics which usually offer smaller less well-known cruise ports.

Azamara, Silversea, Oceana, and Seabourn are just a few of the cruise lines that cruise this route.

Choosing a cruise line can be a very confusing process, there are so many things to consider. Dress codes, dining, entertainment, and more. To help you to find the perfect cruise line for you, I’ve put together this video:

A Cheaper Alternative To A Baltic Cruise

The Baltic Sea is crossed by various ferry routes, and you can cheaply and easily hop from one country to another.

I took a cruise with Silja Line, onboard Silja Symphony. She is a giant ferry, with a central street – similar to those found on Royal Caribbean and MSC cruise ships.

The ship I took sailed from Stockholm in Sweden to Helsinki in Finland and back. It cost around £22/$28 per person, per night.

Baltic Sea Cruise Port Estonia

Where To Visit At Each Port on Your Baltic Sea Cruise

This past September, my family and I took a Baltic Sea cruise round-trip from Copenhagen. We started in Oslo, headed to Gothenburg, Warnemünde (Berlin), Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and Nynashamn (Stockholm) on the Regal Princess. My family and I spent hours upon hours reviewing all of the best things to do in each city and tried to navigate exactly how we could fit everything into the alloted time we had at each port. While we were ultimately extremely successful in our research and planning, it is important to note that not everything goes as planned as weather, transportation, and severely infected mosquito bites can alter your day. Yes, I ended up in the cruise hospital because my bites were so massive they were worried I had a flesh-eating bacteria. Turns out, a heavy dose of antibiotics was all I needed. Sorry, tangent! The point is that d oing your research prior for a trip with so many large cities on the itinerary will have an enormously positive impact. This Baltic Cruise port guide outlines each port city on your Baltic Sea cruise and help you determine exactly what sights to see.

Travel tip:  Purchasing a Rick Steve’s Northern European Ports guide book is a must for your trip. At each port, rip out the pages for your current city.  That way, you won’t have to carry around a heavy book all day but you will still have restaurant recommendations, transportation tips, etc. accessible if you have no internet.  Props to my mom for reading that somewhere and implementing on our trip.

BALTIC SEA CRUISE PORTS:

Oslo, norway.

If you have a day in Oslo, I would recommend taking a harbor cruise via the Bogdoy peninsula , visiting the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History , walking around the Vigeland sculpture park , and ziplining down the Holboken ski jump . Realistically, you will probably have to choose 3 of 4 of these excursions as everything is spread out in Oslo. The Baltic Sea cruise port is in walking distance to the city center, but to get around to these attractions you will have to take some form of transportation. We opted for taxis which are incredibly expensive because it was raining heavily and since it was our first port we were overly excited. This allowed us more time to pack in as many things as possible into our day and kept us relatively dry during the heavy rain. Due to the inclement weather, the zipline was unfortunately closed; however, there is still an interesting museum at the ski jump as well as the ski jump itself which is a fun activity. Also, make note of the seasonality of certain attractions. For instance, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History was technically open during the first week of September, but there were no open air markets or festivities happening whatsoever which was a disappointment. We had heard so many great things about the museum, so just make sure you double check the dates and know that outdoor activities majorly decrease by the end of August.

Baltic Sea Cruise Gothenburg Crab Paste

GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN

While planning my trip excursions for our Baltic Sea cruise, I dismissed Gothenburg as somewhat of a throwaway city, partially because we were only in port for a half-day and also because I was just really excited for Stockholm. I could not have been more wrong about this city. As soon as we made it to the city center, I instantly had that feeling of comfortability and connection to a city. The history was very interesting and the city itself is absolutely stunning.

Upon arrival in Gothenburg, your cruise ship should have some sort of shuttle bus to the main square. From there, I highly suggest taking the Stromma-The Paddan tour around the city. The boat cruise is in walking distance from where the shuttle bus drops you off and is a great 50 minute tour of the canals and the waterfront. It was raining during the tour and we had to wear obnoxious, bright blue ponchos and it was still so fun. After the tour, I suggest strolling around the city center, perhaps getting a cup of coffee and just getting acquainted with the city in the short period of time you have there. We actually went into a market and had the best time comparing the foods in the Swedish market to the ones in the States.  Who knew people actually buy paste of crab and paste of bacon? If there were any specific sights on The Paddan tour that you were interested in checking out more extensively, you would have time then to do so.

Baltic Sea Cruise Warnemunde to Berlin

WARNEMUNDE (BERLIN), GERMANY

Depending on the size of your cruise ship, you will most likely dock in Warnemünde, which is a port town about 3 hours away from Berlin. So now you must decide if it is worth it or not to schlep to Berlin for just a few hours as it is such an expansive city.  While there are typically cruise ship excursions to closer towns such as Rostock, I think that it is worth it to take the time to visit Berlin if you have not been before. People are generally divided on this decision though and many would tell you to stick to exploring Rostock. We hired a private tour guide   and driver to take us around Berlin and show us as much as they possibly could in about a 6-hour period.  Our guide’s name was Jeremy Minsberg and he did an excellent job of highlighting Berlin in such a short time.  I learned more in that brief period than I did spending four days in Berlin on my own a few years prior. I also heard positive feedback from my Baltic Sea cruise-mates that went on the Princess shore excursion to Berlin.  However, they probably didn’t have a driver going 180 kph on the autobahn the whole time.

Baltic Sea Cruise sunset from Regal Princess

TALLINN, ESTONIA

I hate to spoil the fun, but there is a strong possibility that Tallinn will surprise you as your favorite city you visit on your Baltic cruise. Tallinn is the cutest medieval town with some of the best food that I have ever eaten. The only down side is that there are tons of tourists walking the small narrow medieval streets right along with you. In Tallinn, I suggest taking a brief tour to get yourself acquainted with the city and then spend the rest of your time exploring, eating, and drinking on your own.  It is only a 20 or so minute walk from where the cruise ship will dock. There is a free walking tour  that meets every day at 12:00 PM in front of the Tallinn Tourist Info Center. The tour is very well done and you will learn loads of information; the only thing to keep in mind is that during high season, there will most likely be at least 20-30 people on the tour with you. If a large group doesn’t appeal to you, I would suggest doing a paid tour. Since the food is so phenomenal in Tallinn, you could consider doing a food tour such as Food Sightseeing Estonia’s   3-hour tour which will combine a visit to the must-see sights in Tallinn Old Town plus many food stops along the way.

Baltic Sea cruise St. Petersburg, Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

Due to visa restrictions, it is important that you book a tour in St. Petersburg either through your Baltic Sea cruise ship or with a private tour guide. We opted for a private guide   as we wanted to personalize our itinerary in St. Petersburg as much as possible. However, we did book a night excursion through our cruise ship to see the ballet. While I still recommend the ballet because well, it’s Russia, you should know that the Kirov ballet tours all over the world so you might be seeing a student production.

Since we went with a private guide and not a Princess Cruise shore excursion, we had much more flexibility to tailor our perfect itinerary. Some of the main sights that we wanted to see on our two days in St. Petersburg included the following: The Hermitage, Catherine’s Palace, Peterhoff gardens, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood  (watch out for pickpockets), and St. Isaac’s Cathedral . As beautiful and magnificent as the city is, I was shocked by the crowds of people at all the famous sights. I have been to many festivals with tons of crowds and have never felt so overwhelmed by the amount of tourists ever. I think it is important to note that as you plan your trip, make sure to discuss with your guide what time is is the best time of day to visit each sight.

Baltic Sea Cruise Helsinki, Finland coffee

HELSINKI, FINLAND

On your port stop in Helsinki, make sure you don’t leave without getting a coffee ! We started off with a Winter Wonderland shore excursion that was part of the Princess cruises excursions and the guide commented on how much Finnish people love their coffee at least six times in the three-hour tour. All that coffee talk made sense when we finished the tour, sat down for lunch, and were brought the most gorgeous and decadent coffee, we had ever seen.  I don’t recommend the Winter Wonderland tour though. The idea of it was really cool but the actuality was a small room with nothing to do except pay extra money to ride in a circle on a sled dog one time. If you want to ride sled dogs, do the shore excursion on an Alaskan cruise. Now that was incredible! Apart from the coffee and lunch in the city center, you should stroll around Market Square. There are some nice souvenirs that you can purchase for friends and family. One of the main sights in Helsinki is the Rock Church , a Lutheran church with incredible architecture. Don’t expect to have a peaceful moment here as it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and consequently there are a ton of tourists.  Another popular spot is the Suomenlinna fortres s which is just 15 minutes on the public ferry from Market Square.

Prior to visiting Helsinki, I was completely ignorant to Finnish sauna culture. But, you learn quite quickly that this is an integral part of the Finnish lifestyle. Knowing this now, I would absolutely recommend visiting a sauna during your day in Helsinki. This Finnish sauna guide outlines some of the best spots to get your sweat on in Helsinki.

The cruise ship will have shuttle buses to take you from the port to the city center if you decide to be on your own in Helsinki, so you don’t have to worry about arranging your own transportation from the Helsinki port.

Baltic Sea Cruise Icebar by Icehotel Stockholm

NYNASHAMN (STOCKHOLM), SWEDEN

Stockholm was the most difficult Baltic Sea cruise port to plan for two reasons. 1) Our cruise ship, the Regal Princess, was so large that we actually docked in Nynashamn which was an hour away from Stockholm.  There aren’t any taxis so you needed to take the bus provided by Princess. The price of a tour guide to take us from Nynashamn to Stockholm was outrageously expensive, so we opted for the shore excursion through Princess that was transport only. 2) Even before we knew we had extremey limited time, there are just so many things to do and see in Stockholm that you really have to “trim the fat.”

One of the non-negotiables for our family was the Vasa Museum  which completely held up to its reputation of being an outstanding museum. I highly recommend watching the movie first and then taking a look at the recovered ship. There are also short guided tours several times daily. We also wanted to go to the Icebar by Icehotel .  I had never been to an ice bar and wanted to go to the original ice bar. Although it is an overpriced tourist trap, you will still have a blast donning the huge capes, picking your beverage and taking a zillion photos with everyone on your trip. I would highly recommend emailing them in advance to make a reservation so that you don’t have to wait in a long line and lose out on any more time in Stockholm. The third “must” was walking around the stunning old town of Stockholm otherwise known as “ Gamla Stan .” This is the perfect spot to grab lunch in between your activities and window shop a bit as well. While you won’t have too much time to pause, you can also take a fika which is a popular Swedish ritual that every nationality can get on board with – cruise puns :). A fika is not just a coffee break. It is a Swedish tradition. You take time out of your day to pause and have a coffee (tea is acceptable too) and a baked good with friends or on your own. If you’re reading this and thinking…umm, we do this everywhere. Yes, but coffee in many places is a grab-and-go culture whereas “taking a fika” means being intentional about slowing down.

Other sights that I unfortunately had to miss out on included the Abba Museum  and the Stockholm Rooftop tour   where you climb 43 meters above the streets of Stockholm to see the city.  While it was disappointing to not be able to fit everything in, Stockholm is not a city that can be done in one day and deserves a second visit.

Best Time to Cruise the Baltic Sea?

Typically, I always recommend shoulder season (May/September) for European travel for mild temperatures and lesser crowds. But, the Baltic countries are so far north, that June-August would be my preference, with mid-late June being the most desirable time to visit. The Hermitage will be insufferable, but in reality, it is all the time. We went end of August – early September, and it was cold and raining the entire time.

where does a baltic cruise go

I loved your summary! It was one of the most complete I’ve read regarding things to do in the different ports. I’m sailing in 10 days on the Regal Princess (Copenhagen, Oslo, Warnemunde, Tallinn, St Petersburg, Stockholm and then back to Copenhagen). I wanted to see as much as I can, so me and my mom reserved long shore excursions (both from the trip and independent) in every port. I wanted to ask you if you think this is a good idea or if you think we will not be able to handle such long days. Were you exhausted after your cruise? By the way, we are pretty young and healthy, so we can walk a lot. Thank you!

' src=

Thank you for saying that! And yay for an exciting upcoming trip! I did the exact same Regal Princess cruise I think. As for guided tours in every port, it’s really up to you although I am happy to give my opinion. Personally, I like to go off on my own occasionally as I think guided tours can get a bit exhausting not just physically but also mentally as well when you don’t really have an opportunity to go out and explore on your own. I would definitely do guides in Warnemunde/Berlin and St. Petersburg and then I would forgo guides in Gothenburg and in Tallinn. Then, I think for the others Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki its up to you how much structure you want for the trip. It’s definitely a trip and not a vacation, but totally worth it and you will have a couple of “at sea” days to recuperate!

Your Quick Guide To A Baltic Cruise

admin

They offer a great alternative to those who don’t want to cruise Alaska or the Caribbean and would prefer to stay within Europe. As you’re travelling around Europe you won’t have to worry too much about the language barrier either and cruises from the UK leave from ports in Southampton, Dover and Newcastle.

As the Baltic is covered is half covered with ice during the winter, Baltic cruises only run between the months of May and September. During this time the weather will vary, as it does in the UK, but that’s part of the adventure! Baltic cruise ships tend to travel at night so that travellers can make the most of daily excursions to the several ports of call during the day.

Key Ports of Call

St Petersburg

This is one of the key ports of call on a Baltic cruise and there is so much to see and do that some cruise ships dock for two nights. The Hermitage Museum is a must visit. Here you’ll find one of the most notorious houses of art in the world featuring over 2.7 million exhibits, including pieces by Da Vinci, Matisse and Rembrandt.

The Church of Our Saviour On Spilled Blood is another impressive Russian landmark. The church looks out upon the entire city and is situated on the Griboedova Canal, one of the oldest waterways in the former Russian capital.

You’ll capture some vibrant photos here as there are over 7000 square metres of mosaic art. If you get chance you may also want take an evening trip to see one of St Petersburg’s sophisticated ballet or opera shows .

A gothic empire, Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and is a haven of interesting culture. The Old City of Tallinn is just a short 10 minute walk from the city’s port. This is actually a World Heritage Site and is home to an extensive range of 14 th and 15 th century architecture .

Journey through the winding roads and glance up towards the towering spires or visit the 15 th century Guildhall which is now a converted museum dedicated to town’s history. If you fancy something a little more relaxing, take a trip to see the Kadriorg Park which dominates over 250 acres of glorious urban park and features a Swan Lake, promenade and the Kadriorg Palace.

Along with Helsinki and Copenhagen, this is a capital city is an essential location for a daily excursion. Travel to the centre of Stockholm where you’ll find the Djurgården Island . This is a popular tourist location due to its lush green scenery and wide range of activities to take part in. Want a little exercise? There are regular 2 hours walking tours across the island.

The Vasa Musuem is another impressive attraction in Stockholm. This museum is in fact the world’s only 17 th century preserved war ship and visitors are able to explore it’s six floors. The beauty of this ship has seen it chosen as one of the seven wonders of Sweden. For families, a recommended day trip is to the Grona Lund Amusement Park , think of it like a Scandinavian Thorpe Park!

This is just a snapshot of the wonderful locations and attractions you’ll be introduced to on a Baltic cruise. There really is no better way to see Europe and better yet there are a host of luxurious cruise ships to travel on. Comfort, luxury and picturesque views that will last a lifetime. Baltic Capitals Cruise: Port Guides and Shore Excursions

A Baltic cities cruise is a great way to see some of the diverse and beautiful Baltic Capitals. The cruise ship will only dock in each port for a limited amount of time so you want to hit the ground running, use these Baltic cruise excursions port guides to ensure you have a plan to make the most of your onshore excursions.

Cruising is a great way to visit a number of destinations in a short period of time. Whether you are a family with young kids, teenagers or only adults a cruise caters well for everyone’s needs which makes it perfect for extended family and multi-generation holidays.

Only having to unpack once and either relax or enjoy the onboard activities while you travel to your next destination is a real treat.

I love Scandinavia and it is a great destination to visit over the European summer when the rest of Europe is stifling hot. After almost cooking in the 40 degree temperatures of Tuscany, in July the previous year, I was determined we would be visiting more temperate climates the next summer.

Royal Caribbean Baltic cruise shore excursions

There were so many places I wanted to visit Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia were all on the list.

A Baltic cities cruise seemed like a great option to visit some of these destinations and the summer months are the best time for a Baltic cruise.

Why did we choose Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines?

  • The reviews for adult passengers as well as those travelling with young children were excellent.
  • We knew all three generations would be well catered for.
  • The Baltic cruise itinerary which covered the most capitals on our wish list.
  • Visiting Russia by cruise meant we would be eligible for a Russian visa waiver.
  • The price was much cheaper than the same itinerary with Disney Cruise Lines

Should we take the cruise ship shore excursions?

Each cruise line will offer its own cruise excursions. We chose to arrange our own shore excursions. Tour group travel is not our style and organising our own DIY shore excursions was so much cheaper, more flexible and allowed us to include more in our itinerary.

Tip: Find out what time the Cruise ships own shore excursions depart each morning and arrive back to the ship in the afternoon. Plan your own disembarking around this to avoid waiting in queues.

We decided on a 7 day cruise and visited Oslo and Bergen prior to our cruise and then visiting Copenhagen after we returned to Stockholm. This gave us the chance to do some slow travel, experience our first cruise as a family and see so much more than we could otherwise have in the time we had available.

If you’ve read any of my other posts you’ll know that I like to give a lot of detail to help other family travellers know what to expect before they take the same trip, especially important when travelling with kids. Since one day in port is never enough to get to know a place I’ve asked some expert travel bloggers that have lived in these cities or visited for extended periods to share their best tips and itineraries in these Baltic cruise port guides, you can click through to their website to find out even more detail about each port.

We started our Baltic Cruise in. We took a one week Baltic cruise starting in Stockholm, Sweden and the cruise itinerary went to Helsinki, Finland, Saint Petersburg, Russia, Tallinn, Estonia and Riga, Latvia. To accommodate those going on a longer cruise or with a different itinerary I’ve also included Rostock, Copenhagen and Oslo in the Baltic cruise port guide.

BALTIC CAPITALS CRUISE PORT GUIDES:

Oslo norway cruise excursion.

The central port of Oslo makes it the perfect city to visit by cruise. A number of cruises begin in Oslo so consider spending a few extra days here or exploring more of Norway on the spectacular Norway in a Nutshell tour which is runs between Oslo and Bergen and includes one of the most scenic train journeys in the world and a cruise through Norway’s spectacular Narrow Fjord.

The cruise port in Oslo is walking distance to the city centre. With Oslo’s fantastic museums it is usually worthwhile purchasing an Oslo City Pass, purchase online in advance to save time. The 24 hour pass includes entry to museums as well as unlimited use of public transport.

Across the harbour accessible by bus or ferry is Bygdøy peninsula. Home to Oslo’s best museums. The Viking Ship museum, with it’s well preserved Viking vessels over 1200 years old. The Norwegian Folk Museum, a village of over 150 buildings and its famous stave church show life in traditional Norway. The Fram Museum which tells the story of Norwegian Polar exploration. The Kontiki Museum containing artefacts from the 1947 journey to replicate Polynesian exploration of the Pacific.

Shore Excursions Norway Cruise Excursions Oslo Opera House from the harbour

Next head to Vigeland Sculpture park, this is Oslo’s most popular attraction. The large park with beautiful gardens displays over 200 granite, bronze and cast iron sculptures. Works of the artist Gustav Vigeland, sculptures of children and acrobatic manoeuvres are dynamic and playful while the central towering bodies has a more sombre message. If time permits visit the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and enjoy the views over Oslo and the Oslo Fjord from the modern structure.

Stockholm Cruise Excursion

By wisteria from wisterian watertree.

Cruise ships in Stockholm, Sweden will anchor at either Frihamnen, the terminal for ferries to the Baltic and Finland, or at Stadsgårdskajen, which is almost in the middle of the city. Both are connected to local public transport and makes it easy to explore the city on your own.

If you arrive at Frihamnen, go to Ropsten and take the tram across the bridge to the island of Lidingö. The Millesgården museum was home to a local sculptor whose monumental statues can be found in many places around Sweden, and which often pose metaphysical questions. His home has been turned into a museum with a sculpture park outside. You can take the tram back and change to the subway – Stockholm is famous for having subway stations which are works of art, although the impressive ones are not on this line. Get off at Hötorget or Centralstation to be in the middle of the city.

If your ship anchors at Stadsgårdskajen, the part of the city on top of the cliff are well-preserved 18th century city houses, often with their own gardens. Today this is a high-status neighborhood, but in the 18th century it was where the poor lived.

In either case, the oldest part of the city, the small island straddling the huge lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, is well worth a visit. Its cobbled and winding streets make for a pleasant walk and the many cafes for a nice break. The castle at the north side, facing the parliament, is home to an interesting museum if you like medieval history. Also watch out for the changing of the guards, every day at noon. During summer, the guards are often on horseback, which makes it a bit of an extra show.

Stockholm Cruise excursion day trip to Vasa Museum

After watching the guards, take the small ferry across the bay to the Djurgården island. This is where you will find Skansen, world-renowned (and world first) outdoor museum of Swedish folklore, housed in historic buildings which have been moved here. It also doubles as a zoo. But the island is also home to both the Vasa museum, where a ship built during the 17th centrury that sank into the mud of the Stockholm estaturary is preserved; and the Nordiska Museet, a museum of ethnography that focuses on the lives of people a couple of centuries ago. Close by is Junibacken, a must-see for anyone with kids, a storybook interactive museum with exhibits from the treasury of Swedish childrens picture books, and a ride in homage to Astrid Lindgren, of Pippi Longstocking fame.

Tallinn Cruise Excursion

By allison from eternal arrival.

One of the can’t-miss ports on any Baltic cruise is the beautiful city of Tallinn, Estonia . It’s a fantastically preserved old city with some of the original medieval walls still intact, filled with cute buildings, delicious restaurants, and plenty of churches and museums for those interested in culture. Even better, it’s a compact city, so you can even walk from the cruise port to the old city center quite easily, in about 15 minutes. I spent 5 days there and never ran out of things to do, but if you only have 6 hours, you’re going to have to hustle to see some of its best spots. First, start in the Old City, going straight to the Town Square to see some of Tallinn’s most famous medieval buildings. Pop into Drakon III for some delicious, affordable “medieval-themed” fare that’s quite delicious! There are souvenir shops selling local products on streets all around the Old Town — traditional souvenirs include handicrafts, Kalev chocolates, and woollens. Everyone will try to sell you amber and matryoshka dolls, but neither of those are actually Estonian!

What to do in Tallinn Estonia on a Baltic Cruise. Visit the old town and Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

When in the Old Town, make sure you go to one of the viewpoints. My favorite is the one on Toompea Hill, which also features interesting statues and the unmissable Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Cathedral. After you’ve walked around the Old Town for a bit, you can either check out the KGB Museum at Viru Hotel just outside the Old Town (be sure to book your tour in advance) or if you’re interested in modern hipster culture you can check out the bustling neighborhood of Kalamaja, full of street art, cute cafés, and boutique shops. The Telliskivi Creative City is also a great place to buy Nordic-inspired homewares and other souvenirs that don’t scream “souvenir shop”.

Copenhagen Cruise Excursion

By alan and rosalind from frequent traveller.

Copenhagen is one of our favourite cruise ports . It’s a wonderful city to explore with many world class attractions. A short visit doesn’t do this city justice however if your time here is limited we suggest you head straight into the city centre. If your arriving by ship the quickest way to reach town is via Taxi. The Taxi stand is at the port and the ride into the city centre takes about 20 Minutes. Taxis are metered, fast and efficient and accept cards.

On our first visit to Copenhagen we defiantly wanted to see the famous Little Mermaid Statue which is one of the city’s major attractions. If your time is limited, we recommend that you catch the Hop On Hop Off bus and choose the Little Mermaid route, which takes in Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish Royal Family, the Little Mermaid Statue and Christiansborg Palace, an important building that is used as the seat of Danish Parliament. Tip: if you arrive at Amalienbord Palace before 12:00 you can watch the changing of the guard which takes place daily.

Visit the rollercoasters in Tivoli Gardens on your Copenhagen cruise stopover

If theme parks are more your style a visit to the Tivoli can’t be missed. It’s been in operation since 1843 and still retains that old-world charm. Set amongst manicured gardens it’s a delight to visit for young and old. It opens at 11:00am so arriving at opening will avoid the large afternoon and evening crowds. With so much to see in Copenhagen it’s no wonder we choose to return for a much longer visit which gave us the chance to explore in much more detail this truly amazing city.

Rostock Cruise Port Shore Excursion

By laura from savored journeys.

If you’re cruise docks near Rostock, just outside the adorable town of Warnemunde , Germany, you’re likely wondering what there might be to do in this small city you’ve likely never heard of. Warnemunde is a popular seaside resort town, located along the Baltic Sea, just two hours north of Berlin. It’s the cutest little town, and a great way to spend your day off the ship. But the larger town of Rostock is also close by, and you’ll find even more fun things to do there.

The cruise ship docks within walking distance of Warnemunde. You can walk along the promenade of stores, bars and restaurants, and down to the waterfront in about 15 minutes. The sea shore is often full of families enjoying a day out, playing in the sand and sun. Don’t forget to grab a Fischbrotchen (fish sandwich) from one of the street vendors along the way. It’s a specialty in Warnemunde. After you’ve spent a few hours enjoying Warnemunde, you can take a 45-minute tourist ferry or 20-minute train ride into Rostock.

Saint Petersburg, Russia Cruise Excursion

Visiting Saint Petersburg by cruise is a fantastic option. A visit to Russia usually requires a prearranged visa but those arriving via cruise or ferry can get a 72-hour visa waiver. Your cruise operator may tell you the only way to visit the city is with one of their (expensive) excursions, this is not true, you can arrange your own tour through a private operator for a fraction of the cost. You will need to show a copy of your tour voucher at border patrol so be sure to book ahead and have this on hand.

Catherine's Palace Russia Visit by cruise ship on a Baltic cities cruise for visa free travel

Saint Petersburg is a treasure trove of churches, museums and lavish palaces. Some cruises stop in port overnight allowing you 2 days to explore the myriad of sites. We organised our tour with Ulko tours, we visited Saint Petersburg with children and they were very accommodating. With an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide, we were able to avoid the crowds and see many sites in a short amount of time while still keeping a pace the children were comfortable with. Must see sites include the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, the collections of the Hermitage Museum, the Amber room at Catherine’s Palace and the fabulous gardens and fountains at Petershof Palace. Be sure to make time to try stuffed pelmeni dumplings, traditional beetroot borscht, beef stroganoff, pancake blini, decadent caviar and of course vodka.

Riga, Latvia DIY Shore Excursion

Riga has a compact, beautiful and walkable old town easily reached by foot from the central city cruise terminal. Ramble your way through the old town to see the House of Blackheads, Town Hall Square, St Peter’s Church, Riga Church and the remains of the fortifications. Duck into stores selling souvenirs handcrafted by local artisans and head into Black Magic Bar, the original pharmacy which invented Black Balsam, a strong herbal liquor, the flavour similar to cough medicine is not for everyone but (apparently) it will cure your ails Black Magic Bar also serves a good coffee if that is your preferred medicine.

Riga Latvia Cruise guide Freedom Monument

Stop at the Freedom monument, at the top see liberty holding three gold stars, erected to recognise those soldiers who fought and lost their lives in the Latvian War of Independence between 1918 and 1920. Next stroll through the riverside Kronvalda park towards the Art Nouveau district. Riga has the largest collection of Art Nouveau buildings of any city in the world, due to an economic boom in the early 20 th century. The multi-story apartment buildings decorated with plaster sculptures of gods and lions will have you craning your neck skywards. Stop here for lunch in one of the many restaurants in this elegant neighbourhood.

Baltic Sea Cruise Ports Review for Carnival Cruise Itinerary

Are you planning your next cruise getaway and looking for something extraordinary.

The Baltic Sea Cruise with Carnival Cruise Line is the adventure of a lifetime! A journey filled with unparalleled beauty, historical significance, and cultural experiences known only to the enchanting cities located along the Baltic Sea.

Our Baltic cruise review highlights the incredible opportunity to explore multiple Baltic ports across different countries, all in one unforgettable vacation.

I was thrilled to hear that Carnival had added the Baltic Sea to their list of destinations and knew that this was a trip I couldn’t miss. So, I began my research, booked my tickets, and embarked on an unforgettable journey that exceeded all my expectations.

In this post, I’m going to share my experience cruising with Carnival, exploring the Baltic Sea ports, and what makes this itinerary stand out from the rest.

The Baltic Itinerary

Carnival offers a 12-day cruise that originates in Dover, England, and sails to ports in Germany, Estonia, Finland, Netherlands, and Sweden. The itinerary consists of eight port destinations, each with its unique attractions and culture.

What I loved about the itinerary is that it allowed me enough time to explore and discover each port’s hidden gems while enjoying the convenience and comfort of the Carnival ship.

Onboard Carnival Legend

We embarked on the Carnival Pride, the sister ship of the Carnival Legend, which will be sailing on the Baltic Sea Cruise in 2024. We have cruised on the Carnival Legend on a previous Transatlantic cruise and really enjoyed the layout of the ship and all the amenities it has to offer.

The Carnival Legend is a beautiful and spacious ship, with everything necessary to make your cruise experience unforgettable. The cabins are comfortable and well-appointed, and offer the perfect space to relax after day-long shore excursions.

The ship’s facilities include a casino, a spa, a fitness center, two outdoor pools, a mini-golf, a 214-foot-long waterslide, and more.

What makes the Carnival Legend stand out is the exceptional service offered by the friendly crew members. They go above and beyond to ensure that you have a memorable stay. From the attentive dining service to the friendly bartenders, everything is taken care of.

Exploring the 8 Ports of Call

The ports of call in the Baltic Sea Cruise are significant historical landmarks and beautiful cities that offer visitors a glimpse of the past. Most of the ports are a short walk from the city center. Below are a few highlights from my trip.

White Cliffs of Dover England view from the Cruise Ship Pier

1. Dover, England

The cruise departed from the cruise terminal in the picturesque port town of Dover, situated in the southeastern part of England. Dover is renowned for its breathtaking vistas of the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and is celebrated for its medieval fortress, Dover Castle.

Warnemunde Port in Germany from a Baltic Cruise with the beach, train station and ferris wheel in the background

2. Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany

In Germany, we stopped at the Warnemünde Port, which features a picturesque beach, a historic lighthouse, and an old town square lined with pubs and cafes. We, however, went on a day trip for a guided tour of Berlin with fellow travelers.

Kiel Germany city square with building plants and water.

3. Kiel (Hamburg), Germany

We made a stop at the vibrant port of Kiel, which acts as the gateway to Hamburg and its renowned attractions. This charming city offers a delightful walking experience with abundant shopping opportunities and a wide array of culinary delights.

Hop on Hop off Bus in Copenhagen Denmark

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

In Denmark, we visited Copenhagen, a charming city with colorful houses, canals, and a rich history. We enjoyed the hop-on hop-off bus tour and spent time at the Tivoli Gardens and visiting the Little Mermaid. Highly recommend both.

View from the top of Toopea Hill in Tallinn Estonia

5. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn in Estonia was another highlight of our trip. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers stunning panoramic views of architecture in a medieval village We also enjoyed the local cuisine, including traditional dishes like black bread and smoked fish.

Me feeding a reindeer in Helsinki, Finland

6. Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki, the captivating capital of Finland, exudes an enchanting blend of beauty and modernity. With its vibrant atmosphere, our exploration began with the Carnival Excursion—a delightful city tour encompassing notable landmarks such as the remarkable rock church.

As part of this memorable experience, we also ventured to the Reindeer Farms, where we had the incredible opportunity to interact with and feed these majestic creatures.

Boat Tour in Stockholm, Sweden

7. Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm in Sweden was another favorite stop. We explored the charming old town, Gamla Stan, and visited the Vasa Museum and Royal Palace. We also enjoyed a meal at the oldest pub, a boat tour along the Stockholm Archipelago, and a drink at the Ice Bar.

Windmill outside of Amsterdam

8. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Unfortunately, our previous cruise did not include a stop in Amsterdam. However, on the new itinerary of the Carnival Legend, Amsterdam is now included.

Interestingly, after our cruise, we had the opportunity to spend a few days in Amsterdam, where we absolutely loved seeing the windmills , the Anne Frank House Museum , the Hermitage Museum, the City Canal Tour, and much more.

Baltic Cruise Shore Excursion

Carnival offers a range of shore excursions that cater to different interests and activity levels. I enjoyed the variety of options, from bus tours, to private tours, and walking guided tours. Some of the excursions included visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, cultural performances, and local cuisine experiences.

The Overall Experience for My Baltic Cruise Review

The Baltic Sea Cruise with Carnival was an unforgettable adventure filled with stunning sights, unique cultures, and memorable experiences of several Baltic Countries.

The itinerary was well-planned, and the ship was exceptional, offering everything needed for a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience including room service, swimming pools, hot tubs, and a sun deck. I was extremely impressed with the onboard service, the shore excursions, and the beautiful cities we visited, making this an adventure I will never forget.

When is the Best Time to go on a Baltic Cruise?

The best time to take a Baltic Cruise is between May and October when the weather is warmer during the summer months and early fall. The ports we visited had amazing architecture and vibrant cultures that were made even more enjoyable with comfortable temperatures and sunny skies.

The cooler months of November-April can be preferable for those seeking a quieter cruise experience without the crowds.

Carnival Pride at the Cruise terminal in Dover, England before departing on a Baltic Cruise

Are the Seas Rough?

While the Baltic Sea can experience rough seas at times, it is generally a calm and smooth sailing experience. Cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers to mitigate the effects of motion sickness. If you are susceptible to seasickness, it is advisable to carry medication or sea bands as a precautionary measure.

The roughness of the seas can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. Generally, the winter months may experience rougher seas due to stronger winds and storms in the region.

Tips for a Smooth Sailing Experience

In my review of the Baltic Cruise, I would like to share some valuable tips to ensure your sailing experience is as smooth as possible.

  • Pack comfortable walking shoes as many of the ports have cobblestone streets.
  • Utilize the onboard laundry facilities to save space in your luggage and avoid excess fees for checked baggage on flights.
  • Take advantage of room service for a relaxing breakfast or snack in your cabin.
  • Book shore excursions through Carnival for convenience and peace of mind.
  • Try the local cuisine at each port, it’s a great way to experience the culture.
  • Don’t forget your camera, the Baltic Sea has stunning scenery and architecture perfect for capturing memories.

Frequently Ask Questions (FAQs) for Baltic Cruise Review

If you’re considering a Baltic Sea Cruise with Carnival, here are some common questions and answers to help you plan your trip and make the most out of your experience.

What is the best type of cabin to book?

It depends on your preference and budget. The Carnival Legend offers Inside Cabins and Outside-facing Cabins including Ocean View with a large picture window, Balcony, and Suite cabins.

Is there a dress code for the cruise?

During the day, casual attire is acceptable around the ship and on shore excursions. However, in the evening, some guests opt for more formal attire during dinner and shows.

What currency is used on the ship and in ports?

Onboard, transactions are conducted in US dollars. While local currency is generally preferred in ports of call, US dollars are also widely accepted. Additionally, most places accept payment via credit card.

Is there Wi-Fi available onboard?

Yes, Wi-Fi packages are available onboard for an additional fee. However, it may not always be reliable due to being at sea. Please consult your cell phone service providers to determine the availability of international coverage options.

Does the cruise go to St Petersburg, Russia?

No, it no longer does. While Baltic Sea Cruises used to include visits to Saint Petersburg in the past, the current political climate restricts tourist access to the city.

Do other cruise lines offer Baltic Sea Cruises?

Yes, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and MSC are among some of the more popular.

Cruising the Baltic Sea

where does a baltic cruise go

  • 1.1 Other destinations
  • 2.1 Weather
  • 2.2 Cruising the sea
  • 3.1 Itineraries
  • 3.2 Featured ports

The Baltic Sea is one of the newer choices in Cruise travel destinations. Like the Alaska cruises this one is only available in the summer months but it is a great way to visit the countries in Northern Europe , Germany, and Poland. This is a popular Cruise line destination and provides access to most of Northern Europe as the Mediterranean Sea does for Southern Europe .

where does a baltic cruise go

The Baltic Sea is a brackish inland sea bounded by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the mainland of Europe, and the Danish islands. While brackish this salt content is fairly low at the surface and swimming pools on board ships should be much more pleasant to swim in than those cruising the open ocean.

The idea of cruising is to visit places and this sea provides connections to many interesting places. The following countries have outlets on the Baltic Sea (moving clockwise)

  • Norway – This country is on an inlet between the North Sea and Baltic Sea, but it is included here as Oslo is often listed as a destination city for Baltic Sea cruises as well as cruising the Oslofjord.
  • Sweden – Typical ports include Stockholm , Visby , Helsingborg , and Gothenburg . Cruising the Stockholm Archipelago is also popular.
  • Finland – Ports include Helsinki , Turku and Vaasa .
  • Russia – Eastern most destination St. Petersburg (A visa might be required to go ashore independent of ships' shore excursions)
  • Estonia – Ports include Tallinn and the island of Saaremaa
  • Latvia – Ports include Riga .
  • Lithuania – Ports include Klaipėda
  • Poland – Ports include Gdynia , Gdańsk , Hel , Swinoujscie .
  • Germany – Ports include Warnemünde (provides access to Berlin ), Kiel (provides access to Hamburg ), and Lübeck ( Travemünde ).
  • Denmark – Ports include Aarhus , Copenhagen , Skagen , and Rønne , Bornholm .

Other destinations

  • Kaliningrad Oblast – a small exclave of Russia , between Lithuania and Poland . You need to get visa for Russia to enter Kaliningrad Oblast and proceed through customs.
  • Rotterdam , The Netherlands – sometimes the starting or ending destination for a Baltic cruise.
  • Amsterdam , The Netherlands – sometimes the starting or ending destination for a Baltic cruise.

Much of the Baltic sea ices over in the winter so cruises are limited to the summer season. Local cruise ferries are built for the conditions and continue traffic all year round.

On Shipboard, the air temperature is dominated by the sea temperature which, in turn, depends on the melting of the Winter accumulation of ice each spring. However, by July air temperatures will reach 16 or 17 °C (61–63 °F) rising to 22 °C (72 °F) near mainland coasts.

As soon as the ice melts the sea temperature rises rapidly in late Spring and early Summer. For example, the Danish islands and in the Southern Baltic near Kaliningrad will only reach 10 or 11 °C (50–52 °F) in May but will rise to 17 to 18 °C (63–64 °F) by August. To the south of Gotland the May temperatures of 5 or 6 (41–43) will become about 16 °C (61 F) in August. Even in the Gulf of Finland, where the May temperature averages of just 1 °C (34 °F), it rises to 16 °C (61 °F) or higher approaching St Petersburg in August. The day time temperatures over land can be as high as 30°C (86 °F) on occasion but will normally be in the mid to lower 20s.

Thunderstorms can strike the area at any time of the year but the late Spring and Summer months (from May to August) will typically have from 2 to 3 thunderstorms per month at Copenhagen and Stockholm rising to 4 or 5 towards the east near Riga , St Petersburg and Helsinki .

Cruising the sea

The Baltic Sea is a large body of water with several bays but is relatively isolated from the ocean. Thus the tides are minimal and the surface fairly smooth in the absence of an actual storm. Cruising this overgrown lake should be a pleasant and smooth experience most of the time.

There is also a canal between the sea and the ocean. Some cruises feature a trip through the Kiel Canal . This can be an interesting experience if you have never been through a canal before. This is a very busy place.

Major Cruise Ships frequent these waters with tours that last 10 to 14 days depending on what countries you want to visit. Typically no cruise will reach all of the countries so you have to be choosy. Often one ship will travel the Baltic Sea alternating between a clockwise and counterclockwise traversal of the sea. Some sea days (days without docking) are to be expected.

Somewhat longer cruises may venture out into the North Sea. And North Sea cruises may also sample a few spots in the Baltic. Most cruises will only stop at a few of the available ports so be sure and study the itinerary to determine which sites are featured.

Some smaller lines offer short trips of 3 or 4 days and visit ports in only 1 or 2 countries. A 7-day cruise can leave from England and reach a few destinations in the Baltic Sea. A Riga – Stockholm – Tallinn – Helsinki – Saint Petersburg cruise (or parts of it) can also be done with the Baltic Sea cruise ferries , although that involves changing ships most days and corresponding logistics trouble.

Itineraries

Here are a sampling of some of the longer cruises available. This listing does not constitute an endorsement of any particular cruise line. Cruise lines often change the itineraries every year.

12-day 2011 cruise on SeaDream Yacht Club :

10-day cruise on Princess Cruise line: (two cruises are shown depending on departure date)

12-day cruise on Holland America Cruise line: (this cruise alternates between the itinerary shown and the reverse order depending on the departure date)

12-day cruise on Celebrity Cruise line. Similar to the reversed Holland America cruise except for the start/ending location.

Featured ports

Most of the distinct Baltic Cruises feature an extended stay in St. Petersburg , Russia. This means you can visit the historic city for a couple of full days while returning and sleeping on the ship at night. If you only go ashore using shipboard excursions you will not need a separate visa (as of 2009).

Some cruises feature Berlin , Germany in the brochures. As you can see from the map above Berlin is no where near the sea and a visit to the city is not included in the price of the cruise. A shore excursion to Berlin will typically cost more than $200 and will take 3 to 3½ hours to reach the city. Travel can be by bus or rail. The cruise ship accommodates this long travel time by arriving early and leaving late. Even with the 6 or 7 hours travel time you will could still have 7 or 8 hours in the city (depending on the cruise). Of course, a shore excursion is optional and you can choose to enjoy the local fishing village or not even leave the ship if you prefer.

Some cruises make a stop in Kiel , Germany which features the Kiel canal, a very popular and busy canal in Europe. A few cruises may even traverse this canal as a way to get from the North Sea to the Baltic sea or vice versa. Traversing the canal is an interesting experience.

The terminal cities for these cruises are great destinations in themselves so you may wish to extend your trip by a day or two.

NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES

The charm of the great north.

Climb aboard one of our MSC Northern Europe cruises and discover the wonders that can be found in the British Isles , Scandinavian coastlines or the Baltic states  and experience Europe like never before. Start your Polar, Scandinavian or Baltic cruise from the British Isles and visit the coastal towns and cities in countries like Norway , Denmark , Sweden  or Iceland . From the bustle of cities like Copenhagen , Tallinn  or Hamburg , to the quiet beauty of the fjords or the scenic coastal hamlets, a Northern Europe cruise has it all. The cities in Northern Europe are distinctly different from any other settlements, this is because they perfectly combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of our current times. Scandinavian cruises will take you to locations such as Stockholm , Bergen  or Oslo . Here in particular you will be able to visit awe-inspiring buildings such as the Akershus Fortress , or relax with a stroll around Frogner Park , not to mention the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located at the harbour. A Nordic cruise could also take you to Copenhagen, with its famous statue of the Little Mermaid, or Stockholm, home to the Drottningholm palace, a UNESCO-listed building. If you are also a nature enthusiast, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coastlines, including the Norwegian fjords  or rugged north Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or explore further and take an Arctic cruise to visit Iceland and Greenland . Whether as a trip with friends, a family holiday or a couple's getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic or Fjords cruise this 2024, or in 2025 and discover Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

How well do you know the British Isles? If you need a plan for your 2023 holidays, there are many treasures hidden within Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Portland, the Orkney Islands or the Shetlands, you only need to jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and enjoy the local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises serve as gateways to other cities, although there is much to see in them as well. For instance, you could start your cruise from the UK’s very own Southampton, typically the stop to visit London, although with a rich history of its own. Inhabited since the Stone Age, from the Romans to the Normans and to current times, this port city has always been a spot for cultural exchange; why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? Enjoy the beauty of Edinburgh during a stop at South Queensferry. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble round the city centre for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might see –or hear– the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck in the emerald isle, you can stop at the ports in Cork and Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland , or in Belfast, in Northern Ireland , where you can visit the hexagonal basalt column formations known as the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO world heritage site. You can also go for a hike around the beautiful Glenariff Forest Park, and its breathtaking waterfalls. FIND YOUR CRUISE

Norway Cruises

Did you know the Vikings used to get around in ships to travel from one fjord to another? You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will take you to some of the most beautiful locations in the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Site s: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a breathtaking landscape you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop onto an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these wonders of nature, whether as a trip with friends, a family holiday or a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as the Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and witness the natural beauty of these formations. Another example of incredible natural formation you can enjoy in Norway is the impressive Briksdal Glacier, near the port city of Olden. There you can visit the picturesque houses, or go for a hike to the Jostedalsbreen National Park. More locations you can visit during an MSC Norway cruise are, among others, Maloy, Stavanger or Adalsnes in the southern area; and Tromso, Alta or Hammerfest at the very north. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your holiday with MSC cruises this summer! FIND YOUR CRUISE

Baltic Cruises

Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an emerging destination where you will discover the Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are indeed interested in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or you just enjoy history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town centre will charm you; don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see, with more ports in Goteborg, Ronne, Warnermünde or Gdynia, hidden gems in Northern Europe that are waiting for you, don’t miss out!

Northern Europe ports

Historically, the British Isles have always relied heavily on their port cities, and Southampton is a perfect example: it was a centre of activity in the Stone Age , then continued to be an important port for the Romans , the Anglo-Saxons or the Normans , all the way to the present. Choose a cruise from Southampton this 2024 and for 2025 and explore the north of Europe in style with MSC. From Southampton, you will be able to access London during your cruise, and we needn’t tell you the wonders of the capital city of the United Kingdom. From Southampton you will also be able to book excursions to Windsor Castle ; the elegant city of Bath, among the most beautiful places in England to visit, was transformed by the Romans in the first spa resort in England; or Stonehenge, the mysterious Neolithic stone circle that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Discover the treasures of the Atlantic , starting with the British Isles .

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen . Discover this bustling city known for its picturesque houses, its love for art and culture, and its cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover it all during your wanderings around the city while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll around the city on your own and enjoy the sight of the Øresund strait , or book MSC excursions to see the Christiansborg Palace , an impressive building at the heart of the city. You can also admire the city from the water with a scenic cruise with MSC; or enjoy the excitement of the Tivoli Gardens, with an amusement park, the perfect place for a family excursion, a day with friends, or your couple. Climb aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities like Tallin , Stockholm , Helsinki and much more. Treat yourself to an unforgettable holiday. FIND YOUR CRUISE

HAMBURG CRUISE If there is a famous port in Northern Europe, that is Hamburg . This port city, located on the banks of the Elbe river, is a bridge between continental Europe and the Scandinavian countries. Begin your MSC cruise in Hamburg and take the opportunity to explore this exciting and bustling German city. Did you know the world’s largest warehouse district is in Hamburg? It’s called the Speicherstadt , and you can visit it through a MSC excursion. Not only can you enjoy its Neo-Gothic style , but you can also learn more about it in its museums . The intricate setting of alleys and canals has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site ; definitely worth a look. You can also visit the botanical park, St. Michael’s church or the City Hall. There is more to do in Hamburg before you embark on your Norwegian Fjords cruise: another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lübeck . This picturesque town, on the Trave river, is known for its Gothic architecture, medieval streets and alleys, the Holstenstor or the largest mechanical organ at St. Mary’s Church. Embark on a new adventure with MSC this summer! FIND YOUR CRUISE

From bustling cities like Copenhagen, Tallin or Hamburg , to the beautiful fjords or the picturesque coasts, Northern European cruises have it all. A Nordic cruise can take you to the bustling city of Copenhagen, with the famous Little Mermaid statue, or to Stockholm, home of the Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are a nature-lover, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coasts, including the stunning Norwegian fjords, the rugged North Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or experience a unique and breathtaking Northern Lights cruise. Discover also our Artic cruises and get a rare opportunity to visit Iceland  and Greenland . Northern Europe Countries

Have you dreamed of seeing the Norwegian fjords in real life? Are you intrigued by the volcanic wonders of Iceland? Choose a Scandinavian cruise and travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland and discover how these countries mix modern lifestyles with centuries of history and culture. You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. No matter where you’d like to go in Northern Europe, we can take you there. Or choose an MSC Northern Europe cruise and experience all the North Atlantic has to offer: from France (La Rochelle) and the United Kingdom (Southampton or Edinburgh) all the way to Greenland (Oaqortoq, Nuuk or Ilulissat), passing through the Baltic Sea to Estonia (Tallin) or Finland (Helsinki, Hamina/Kotka), among many others.

How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck on the Emerald Isle, you can stop off at the ports in Cork or Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland. Discover so much more with a cruise around the British Isles in the summer!

Norway Cruises

Did you know that the Vikings main mode of transportation was a ship? They used them to go from one fjord to another. You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will show you some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a stunning landscape that you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop on an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these natural wonders, whether you are taking a trip with friends, a family vacation or going on a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and soak up the natural beauty of these formations. Another prime example of incredible natural formations you can enjoy in Norway is the enormous Briksdal Glacier, near Olden’s port. There you can visit the picturesque houses or go for a hike around the Jostedalsbreen National Park. You can visit even more locations during an MSC Norway cruise such as: Maloy, Stavanger or Alesund in the South; and Tromso, Alta in the far North. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your next vacation with MSC cruises!

Baltic Cruises

Are you intrigued by the wonders of the Baltic Sea? Discover them with an MSC Baltic cruise this 2024 and spend your summer exploring Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and much more. Tallin is the capital city of Estonia. There you can stroll down its cobbled streets, explore its medieval walls, Gothic churches, squares and more. You can also book an MSC cruise excursion to visit the Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, two of the city’s most impressive buildings. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Northern Europe ports

MSC offers a wide range of docking points for your Northern European cruise. Some are embarkation points and others are ports of call, so you can pick the one that will best suit you to start from, and then which ones you will want to visit during your vacation. Start your trip in the south of the UK, with cruises from Southampton and enjoy your MSC Baltic, Fjords or European Atlantic cruises. We also stop at ports in Ireland, such as Cork, or in the Netherlands, for example in Rotterdam, from where we also organize shorter cruises. If you’d prefer to begin your adventure elsewhere, there are ports located across Northern Europe, so you could get your trip started in France, choosing a cruise from Le Havre port, which is near cities such as Paris, Cherbourg or in the Netherlands, opting for a cruise from near Amsterdam. You could also hop aboard your cruise in German ports such as Hamburg or Kiel (near Lübeck) or Warnemünde. There are many other different options spread across the Atlantic such as Rotterdam or Copenhagen. Choose MSC Cruises, and book and unforgettable experience exploring the north of Europe.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON Are you ready for a new adventure from the UK? Southampton’s bustling port is the perfect place from where you can discover the beauty of the North Atlantic. Hop onto an MSC cruise ship and explore Northern Europe gems in France, the Netherlands, Norway or Denmark. Find the right itinerary for your trip and explore cities like Bruges, Helsinki or Stockholm, among others. Come aboard a Northern European cruise at Southampton and enjoy yourself. Once aboard, you’ll be able to visit many European cities. When stopping in Copenhagen, you may book an excursion from those available. You can do the same at ports in Germany, the Netherlands or France.

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. This lively city is known for its colorful houses, art and cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover them during your visit while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll and enjoy the sights of the Øresund strait, or book MSC excursions to see the impressive Christiansborg Palace. Enjoy a scenic river cruise from MSC or enjoy the exciting Tivoli Gardens, the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family or friends. Hop aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities in Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

REYKJAVIK CRUISE Reykjavik is known as the city of spas. With an Iceland cruise, you can marvel at its craters, volcanos, and caves. The piers along the shore host a variety of shops, live music clubs and bars and cafés. Take a stroll up to Lækjartorg to admire the Sófar, also known as the Sun Voyager, a huge modern steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It represents an old Viking vessel, with the bow of the ship pointing north. As you will see during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, Iceland is full of geothermal energy, hot springs, spas and gorgeous skies. Summer is the best season to enjoy a spectacular sunset and admire Reykjavik in the waters of its bay.

Where do you go on a Scandinavian cruise?

MSC Northern Europe cruises branch off into different areas. You can start further north on the Scandinavian Peninsula and choose a cruise to visit Iceland, Greenland or Norway, where you will be able to see the majestic fjords. And then there is the Baltic Sea, located between mainland Europe and Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas. On the west, the countries you can visit there are Sweden and Denmark, and on the east, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Explore the Scandinavian Peninsula, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea with MSC and discover its hidden gems on your next vacation. What are you waiting for?

Can you cruise to Iceland?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!

How much does a Baltic cruise cost?

There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?

Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?

The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.

What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?

The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!

What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?

The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

Katie Holmes (L) and Suri Cruise

Where Celebrity Kids Like Suri Cruise Are Going To College In 2024

The Class of 2028 is already super famous!

Matriculation just got an A-list upgrade. In 2024, the Hollywood stars have aligned as a large group of celebrity children are all enrolling in college at the same time. From Suri Cruise preparing to hop over a state line to Violet Affleck’s Ivy League journey, here’s where all the most famous offspring will be decorating dorms and pulling all-nighters for the next four years.

Anyone who grew up in the tabloid heyday of the mid-2000s knows the names Suri Cruise, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, and more — but those paparazzi magnets aren’t little kids anymore. The high school graduating class of 2024 included a bunch of recognizable names... and some very buzzy name changes. Shiloh Jolie legally filed to drop her estranged father Brad Pitt’s surname shortly after her graduation, and Suri Cruise was notably listed as Suri Noelle (her mom Katie Holmes’ middle name) at her graduation ceremony.

It certainly looks like these famous freshmen-to-be aren’t just leaving high school behind, but also any drama associated with their family names. Jolie has not yet revealed if she’ll be enrolling in college, but many other celeb students have made their education plans known.

Suri Cruise: Carnegie Mellon

Suri Cruise revealed she'd be attending Carnegie Mellon for college.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter flaunted her college pick in a TikTok video of her high school’s “commitment day ,” where seniors wore the sweatshirt of their future school. Cruise’s sweater was clearly marked Carnegie Mellon. She’ll reportedly be studying fashion at the Pittsburgh-based university.

The school is across state lines from her mother’s New York home, which has Holmes feeling a mix of emotions. “I’m proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy,” Holmes said in an August Town & Country profile .

Violet Affleck: Yale

Violet Affleck will attend Yale University.

Violet Affleck will be embracing her father’s New England roots when she enrolls at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut this fall. Her high school revealed Affleck’s college decision by posting a photo of her in a Yale sweatshirt .

Both Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck attended their daughter’s high school graduation in May, and Garner shared an emotional post crying at the event . It looks like she’s already missing her daughter ahead of the big move.

Moses Martin: Brown

Moses Martin will attend Brown University.

Affleck isn’t the only kid with super-famous parents going to an Ivy League school. Moses Martin, the son of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, is set to enroll at Brown University this year. He revealed his college choice by wearing a Brown sweatshirt in a March famiy photo , and reportedly adding “Brown ‘28” to his Instagram bio at the time.

A few days after posting the photo, Paltrow shared how she’s been having a “nervous breakdown” over having to bid farewell to her youngest kid. “ I started being like, ‘Oh my God, and I need to quit my job and I need to sell my house and I need to move.’ It’s sort of putting things into turmoil,” Paltrow said at her Goop Health Summit in April. “My identity has been being a mother ... I’ve oriented my whole life around them and their schedules.”

Justin Pippen: University Of Michigan

Justin Pippen will play basketball at the University of Michigan.

Justin Pippen, the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen and Real Housewives star Larsa Pippen, is also getting ready to start his next chapter. The rising athlete committed to playing basketball at the University of Michigan.

“ I like the feel of the campus and school ,” Justin told ESPN after revealing his college choice. “I wanted to be at a big school. They can help me reach my end goal of making the NBA.”

Henry Samuel: Likely A New York College

Heidi Klum's son Henry Samuel will likely attend college in New York.

Henry Samuel, the son of Heidi Klum and Seal, has yet to reveal exactly where he’ll be attending college, but his mom did confirm he’s enrolling when she posted videos of his high school graduation. “ College here we come ,” Klum wrote.

There’s pretty good reason to believe Samuel will be going somewhere in New York City. He and his mother were spotted touring universities there earlier in the year , plus his older sister Leni goes to college in the city .

How Tom Cruise’s Death-Defying Stunt at the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony Came Together

It’s hard to top much of what we’ve seen come out of this summer’s Olympic Games . (The gymnastics friendships! The sweet parent-child moments ! The jewelry! ) Yet Sunday’s spectacular closing ceremony—which featured a one-of-a-kind stunt courtesy of Tom Cruise that took executive producer and creative director Ben Winston of Fulwell 73 Productions over a year to put together—was a definite contender for the most exciting moment of Paris 2024.

Shortly after a performance of the national anthem by H.E.R. at the Stade de France, Cruise could be seen rappelling from the roof down to the ground; accepting the Olympic flag from Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass; boarding his motocycle, and riding off into the Parisian night. Then, all at once, he was on a plane, jumping out of said plane, and turning the double Os of the Hollywood sign into the Olympic rings. All the while, the Olympic flag was being handed off to a series of athletes including mountain biker Kate Courtney, former sprinter Michael Johnson, and skateboarder Jagger Eaton.

A day before the ceremony, Vogue spoke to Winston about the Olympic flag’s journey from Paris to Los Angeles; organizing a live (and secret!) beach concert featuring the likes of Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; and the mind-bending travel schedule Cruise kept in order to close out the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Vogue : I’d love to hear a little about how this video came about.

Ben Winston: We’ve been planning this for a year and a half, and we had this idea that it would be so beautiful if we could take the flag from the Paris stadium and make it travel all the way to Los Angeles and then go live and do something spectacular here. The thing about Paris is that there are so many iconic elements we saw in the opening ceremony, from the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. One of the things LA is best-known for is its beaches, so we thought, what if we could steal that flag, bring it to LA, and do a massive, amazing concept on the beach with all these amazing LA artists? It’s been incredibly exciting.

The first thing we did was pitch Tom, because there’s nobody better to do an incredible stunt. I pitched him on the idea of a stuntman grabbing the flag, coming down from the roof of the Stade de France, and then taking his mask off and you see it’s Tom Cruise, who then jumps out of a plane and lands in LA. Tom said, “I’m in, but I want to do the whole thing,” so it was this huge undertaking of this live stunt with Tom jumping off the roof. We wanted to keep Tom doing this daredevil jump off the roof a surprise, and then cut to this video we’ve been making where Tom gives the flag to these Olympic athletes, who then take us to a massive live concert on the beach with Billie Eilish, Snoop, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Every element took a lot of work!

How does it feel to be so close to seeing your project come to life?

This story will be going up just after it’s happened, so right now I’m still nervous because we’ve got all these elements lined up and it is live TV. But it’s been an amazing coming-together of wonderful people making it happen. I’m so grateful to Tom and to the artists and athletes taking the flag on its journey from Paris to LA.

Did any part of the planning process take you by surprise?

We really wanted to dream big. Once everyone had signed off on the idea, we were confronted with the reality of: How do you do a stunt with Tom Cruise at the Stade de France and then a massive concert on the beach with some of the most famous artists in Los Angeles? That’s been quite nerve-racking, because we aren’t in the safety of a stadium and the audience doesn’t even know what they’re showing up for. We have fencing at the perimeters of the beach, and hopefully by the time people realize what’s going on it will be over. [ Laughs .] The secrecy was tricky and there were lots of leaks, so it was a lot to live with for a year and a half, but I’m feeling very excited and proud.

Flea, Chad Smith, Anthony Kiedis, and John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers performing during the closing ceremony.

Were there any LA-centric aspects of this production that you particularly loved as an Angeleno?

When you first arrive in LA, you always look for the Hollywood sign, and one of the coolest things about this was the city giving us permission to film on the sign. Tom being up there six or seven months ago with nobody knowing what he was doing was amazing; I’ve been up there a lot with my team, and sitting in the middle of the Os was a pinch-me moment. Working with all this talent was, as well; the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing “Can’t Stop” over the transition of the flag going from Paris to LA is so cool.

Is there any other BTS detail you can share with us?

Well, I can tell you that Tom was filming Mission: Impossible in London, then got on a plane, flew 11 hours to LA, got off the plane, shot with us, then got right back on the plane and back to set. The commitment from him and the musical artists to keeping the beach aspect a secret was really amazing.
