Flashback: AC/DC Rip Through ‘Moneytalks’ at 1991 Monsters of Rock Festival

Earlier this week, we spoke to AC/DC drummer Chris Slade about his first stint in the band in early early Nineties and his surprise return for the Rock or Bust tour of 2015 and 2016. “We always got on as people, so it wasn’t that different,” he said of his return to the group after a pause of more than 20 years. “Everybody got a bit older, including myself, but it felt great.”

Slade initially joined AC/DC right before the recording of The Razor’s Edge in 1990 after working with Eighties supergroup the Firm and former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore. The group had been on a bit of a downward trajectory since prior two records (1985’s Fly on the Wall and 1988’s Blow Up Your Video ) failed to connect with a mass audience. In an era of hair metal and poppier rock bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, they seemed dangerously close to being past their prime. But Malcolm and Angus Young put together a killer collection of songs for The Razor’s Edge and singles “Thunderstruck” and “Moneytalks” became their biggest hits in many years.

The album infused AC/DC with a whole new life, and they toured all over the world to support it. Here’s video of them playing “Moneytalks” at England’s Donington Park on August 17th, 1991. The show was part of the Monsters of Rock festival where they headlined a bill that included Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, and the Black Crowes. AC/DC released the show on VHS and DVD as Live at Donington and songs from it appeared on their 1992 LP AC/DC Live.

The band began plotting out its next album after the tour wrapped up, but during the demo process, Slade got a phone call from Malcolm Young telling him that classic-era drummer Phil Rudd was returning to the fold. “He was incredibly nice,” Slade said. “I remember him saying, ‘This is not anything you have done or anything that you haven’t done, but we’re going to try Phil out again.’ I went, ‘Oh, wow. That’s a biggie. So I’m gone then.’”

Malcolm originally proposed a scenario where Slade would stick around for a little bit until they figured out whether or not Rudd would work out, but he didn’t want to face that indignity and bowed out. Rudd was indeed behind the kit for the 1995 Rick Rubin–produced LP Ballbreaker , but it failed to live up to the commercial success of The Razor’s Edge . Rudd stuck around for 1999’s Stiff Upper Lip , 2008’s Black Ice, and 2014’s Rock or Bust . None of those albums produced a genuine hit single on the level of “Thunderstruck” or “Moneytalks,” but by that point it didn’t matter. Nobody going to see AC/DC during the past 25 years came for their new music and they packed every arena and stadium they booked on the strength of their catalog.

Rudd had to sit out the Rock or Bust tour due to pressing legal problems in his native New Zealand, so they brought Slade back for the tour. Nobody knows exactly where things stand at the moment, though Rudd was spotted near a Vancouver recording studio with others in the band and many fans believe he’s back yet again. Slade isn’t so sure. “Nobody has ever called me and said, ‘By the way, you’re not the current drummer,’ or, ‘By the way, Phil’s been in the band for three years,’” he said. ”Nobody has ever said that. God, I’m philosophical enough to realize that Phil may well be back in the band. I have no idea.”

Rumors were flying last year about a 2020 AC/DC tour, but that’s not going to happen for obvious reasons. They may just be waiting for the pandemic to blow over until they tell fans what their plans are. In the meantime, though, someone should give Slade a call to tell him what’s up. He’s served them well at two crucial points in their career and deserves at least that.

Great forgotten songs #128 – ac/dc “money talks”.

“Moneytalks” is a song written by Malcolm and Angus Young and produced by Bruce Fairbairn for AC/DC. Originally released on 21 September 1990 on the album The Razors Edge, it was later released as a single in December later that year. A live version of the song recorded on the band’s 1990–1991 Razors Edge World Tour appeared on AC/DC’s 1992 live album, Live.

The song is one of AC/DC’s biggest hits, breaking the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Charts, and the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. It is the band’s highest charting single to date in the United States, peaking at #23. During their subsequent world tour, thousands of “Angus Bucks” were dropped on the audience during the song.

A music video of the song, directed by David Mallet, was also released, featuring a live performance during the tour.

The big chorus on its own sounds like a salute to money, but a listen to the verses reveals the opposite: it's a takedown of those who flaunt their wealth, and commentary on how money divides us. AC/DC got very rich, but they stayed grounded.
• " Thunderstruck " was the lead track on The Razors Edge and the most enduring song from the album, but it wasn't sold as a single in America. "Moneytalks" was, reaching a very respectable #23 in the States.
• A lot changed for AC/DC when they recorded The Razors Edge album, which outsold their previous three by a wide margin. For one thing, Angus and Malcolm Young wrote not on the music, but also the lyrics, a task that fell to lead singer Brian Johnson in the past. Johnson didn't have a problem with it - he said he was "out of ideas." Also, Malcolm Young got sober after a bout with alcoholism, and drummer Chris Slade joined the band, replacing Simon Wright. They also used a new producer, Bruce Fairbairn, a Canadian who helmed hit albums for Aerosmith, Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi.
• AC/DC printed their own dollar bills to promote this song, putting Angus Young on the front in place of George Washington. On the Razors Edge tour, these "Angus Bucks" would blow onto the crowd; the music video opens with one set on fire.
• AC/DC took some liberties with the title, turning the phrase "money talks" into one word. They also played fast and loose with the grammar on the album title, leaving out the apostrophe in The Razors Edge .
• Around the same time, there was a song with a similar title on the charts: "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)" by The Adventures Of Stevie V. That one has a similar sentiment but is an R&B tune.

AC/DC Plays Final Show of Power Up 2024 Tour: Set List and Video

AC/DC played the 24th and final show of their Power Up European tour on Saturday at Dublin's Croke Park, bringing their first extended trek in eight years to a close.

The Aussie rock titans' 21-song set list was identical to the one they've used on most Power Up tour dates. They opened with the one-two punch of "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" and "Back in Black" before shifting gears to play "Demon Fire" off 2020's  Power Up . They played a myriad of classics from across their storied career, including "Hells Bells, "Shoot to Thrill," "Highway to Hell," "Let There Be Rock," "Rock 'n' Roll Train" and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," and they ended their show with a two-song encore comprising "T.N.T." and "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)."

How AC/DC Defied the Odds on the Power Up Tour

The Power Up tour marked AC/DC's first extended outing since 2016's Rock or Bust tour, which was plagued with difficulty. Singer Brian Johnson had to bow out of the trek due to hearing loss, and the band recruited Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose for nearly two dozen shows.

Four years later, Johnson returned to the fold for  Power Up , but it remained unclear whether he was healthy enough to tour with AC/DC. The band made its long-awaited return to the stage in late 2023 at Indio, California's Power Trip festival. Although some still questioned whether AC/DC — particularly the 76-year-old Johnson — could handle the rigors of a full tour, the band assuaged their doubts when they launched the Power Up trek in May.

AC/DC Play Last Scheduled Show of 2024 Comeback Tour in Front of 82,000 Fans: Video + Setlist

The rock legends closed it out with a rousing rendition of "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)"

AC/DC closed out their 2024 comeback tour with a concert attended by over 82,000 people at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

The rock legends ran through a 21-song setlist, opening with a one-two punch of “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” and “Back in Black.” The evening featured plenty of other hits spanning the band’s five-plus-decade career: “Thunderstruck,” “Hell’s Bells,” “High way to Hell,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long,” among others.

The set also featured two cuts from the band’s 2020 album, Power Up (“Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark”), as well as some choice deep cuts from the discography such as “Riff Raff,” “Stiff Upper Lip,” “Shot Down in the Flames,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train.”

A truly explosive encore of “T.N.T.” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” ended the evening and tour. For this run, classic members Angus Young (lead guitar) and Brian Johnson (vocals) were joined by rhythm guitarist Stevie Young and new touring members Chris Chaney (ex-Jane’s Addiction) on bass and Matt Laug on drums in place of classic members Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd, respectively.

The gig concludes the first AC/DC tour and extended set of dates with singer Brian Johnson since 2016. Eight years ago, Johnson was forced to step away from the “Rock or Bust Tour” due to hearing issues, and Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose famously stepped in to front AC/DC for two dozen shows.

Johnson’s returned to the stage with AC/DC came late last year with a one-off gig at the Power Trip festival in California. The UK/European tour announcement followed in February. It remains to be seen if a North American tour is in the works, but the fact that Johnson made it through the latest tour without any major problems is an encouraging sign.

When the Australian rock legends recently climbed a US sales mountain for Back in Black , however, the feat nearly slipped by unnoticed.

The band’s seminal seventh studio album is now certified 27-times platinum in the United States, for 27 million sales, breaking the stalemate with Eagles’ Hotel California , and placing the Aussies on the all-time podium.

Produced by Robert “Mutt” Lange and recorded soon after the death of AC/DC’s iconic frontman Bon Scott, Back in Black has been back in business of late.

On July 8th, the album was certified 26-times platinum – almost five years since the last time it collected a new certification plaque from the RIAA, the United States’ equivalent of ARIA. That’s five years to add one million sales.

Thanks in part to the AC/DC sync in the smash Marvel Studio film Deadpool & Wolverine , the album needed just one month to move from 26 million to 27 million units sold.

Back in Black is now the third-highest-certified album in U.S. history , notes Forbes, which has closely tracked the album’s performance, nudging Eagles’ Hotel California , stuck on 26-times platinum.

Cut it this way – Back in Black is the best-selling rock album in the US, ever.

The all-time best-sellers in the world’s biggest music market? Eagles fly high at No. 1 with Greatest Hits 1971 – 1975 (38 million units sold), followed by Michael Jackson’s Thriller (34 million sold).

Released in 1980 with gravel-voiced northern Englishman Brian Johnson on the mic, Back in Black is stacked with epic, timeless riffs, and hits, including the title track which earlier this year passed one billion views on YouTube.

AC/DC was one of the very first names read out for induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, saluted at a ceremony in 1988, alongside Dame Joan Sutherland, Johnny O’Keefe, Slim Dusty, Col Joye and Vanda & Young.

Later, in 2003, the artists were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame .

Ten years on, in 2013,  Back in Black  was entered into the Grammy Hall Of Fame, established by the Recording Academy to honour “recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance.”

When Rolling Stone AU/NZ ran the rule across the 200 greatest Australian albums of all time, Back in Black came in at No. 1 .

AC/DC continues to rock. Angus Young and Co. completed their 2024 Power Up  tour last month in front of 82,000 screaming fans at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.
