Alaska Yukon Bike Tour

Cycling the best of the yukon & alaska.

Pedalers' Alaska bicycle tour across Alaska and Yukon offers a cycle where the sun never sets. Starting with a ferry ride from Juneau to Haines, you will be welcomed to the Alaskan scene by visions of dolphins dancing in the waves and sea otters lazing on the shore. These sights are only the first of many, as the Alaskan Yukon Bike Tour takes you deep into the Alaskan and Canadian mountain ranges, along the Klehini River, and into the Yukon Territory. You will ride through endless untouched forests, past the turquoise blue of Kluane Lake, and between the Chugach and Wrangell Mountains, all the while experiencing landscapes more beautiful than you can imagine. The trip ends as it began, with a ferry across the Prince William Sound, giving you the chance to say farewell to the sea-life and glaciers that first greeted you.

The sense of wonder never has to stop, as you will spend the nights in scenic campgrounds, small ranches, and authentic lodges. You will also have the opportunity to make your own adventures in the places you visit, spending free time exploring the towns or seeking out more nature vistas.

Alaska bicycle tour day by day details

Bike into Canada, crossing Three Guardsman and Chilkat passes, camp by Million Dollar Falls. Our ride today is quite a contrast to yesterday's spin, as we roll deep into the spectacular mountains that highlight this section of the bike tour. Early in the ride, we pass through customs into British Columbia, Canada, following the Klehini River. Then up and over, crossing two passes (Three Guardsmen and Chilkat) en route to the Yukon Territory, our third state/province for the day. The landscapes along this stretch are unbelievable, with glaciers draped on mountain tops and cascading rivers dividing the ranges. We bed down tonight at the aptly named Million Dollar Falls. Ride: 66 mi / 106 km , Land: mountainous, Passes: Three Guardsman 3215 ft / 980 m; Chilkat 3493 ft / 1065 m Eat: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Million Dollar Falls Provincial Park

Dramatic cycling along the St Elias Mountain Range, camp on the sores of turquoise Kluane Lake. Heading up the Alaska Highway (Al-Can) we continue to enjoy the beautiful St Elias Mountains to our left and untouched forested wilderness for as far as the eye can see to our right. Our goal today is the turquoise blue waters of Kluane Lake and Cottonwood Campground, one of the best campgrounds of all our Alaska and Canada trips. The mountains towering above the campground often have Dahl Sheep sprinkled across their upper slopes. Ride: 50 mi / 80 km, Land: small & moderate hills Eat: Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Cottonwood Campground

Explore the Natural History Museum of Burwash Landing, bike along Kluane Lake, camp at Lake Creek. Much of today's ride continues to roll along the shoreline of Kluane Lake, with a lunch time break at the Burwash Landing Natural History Museum. Afternoon will find us pedaling through the immense landscapes that characterize the next section of highway, untouched wilderness for as far as the eye can see in all directions. Tonight's campground is on the banks of Lake Creek. Ride: 83 mi / 140 km, Land: flat & small hills Eat: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Lake Creek Provincial Park

Biking across Tetlin Wildlife Refuge, camp on the shores of Jagger Lake. We are heading back into Alaska today, after a break for photos straddling the border, we clear customs at Border Town. We will explore the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge visitor center at lunch, then continue to a scenic campground on Jaggar Lake inside the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge. Sitting on the lake shore watching the birds and muskrats go about their daily lives as the sun sets is truly magical. Ride: 54 mi / 87 km, Land: small hills Eat: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Jagger Lake NWR

Bike through the magnificent Alaska Range, enjoy views of snow covered Mt Drum from our camp. The third highway of our trip leads us south today, rolling down the Tok Cutoff. The ride starts flat and off in the distance the Alaska Range slowly rises into view. And while the range sports some of North America's highest peaks (including Mt McKinley), our route through it follows rivers for the most part and provides no major challenges ... but lots of photo opportunities. Tonight's campground is on a small ranch with beautiful vistas of the Wrangell Range. Ride: 72 mi / 116 km, Land: flat then gradual uphill Eat: Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Grizzly Lake Resort

Cycle the Tok Cutoff to historic Gakona, the towering Wangrell Mountains to our left, the Alaska off to our right. With the Alaska Range fading from view behind us and the Wrangells growing in the distance ahead of us, we roll further down the Tok Cutoff passing the occasional roadhouse and lodge. We are on our way to the historic Gakona Roadhouse where we camp out on their lush green lawn (while the lodge has rooms, they are usually booked for crews of the Alaska pipeline for the summer). Ride: 51 mi / 81 km, Land: hilly Eat: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Gakona Alaska RV Park

Bike past the dramatic volcanic peaks of Wrangell National park, Camp at the remote Tiekel River Lodge. A short ways into today's ride and we switch to our final highway of the bike tour, the Richardson, Alaska's first highway. We roll through Glenallen, the only city between Tok Junction and the ride's terminus in Valdez. Also along today's ride is Copper Center, an historic agricultural town, plus the informative visitor's center for Wrangell St Elias National Park. We bed down on another old roadhouse, this time at Tiekel River. Ride: 76 mi / 122 km, Land: hilly Eat: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Sleep: Camping at Tiekel River Lodge

Ferry through Prince William Sound, Glacier viewing, Shuttle to Anchorage Airport. The trip ends as it began, with a ferry trip, taking us across Prince William Sound with its glaciers, icebergs and abundant sea life. Perhaps we will be blessed with views of the glaciers calving into the bay, seals and other sea life enjoying the ocean waves and more. After arriving in Whittier, we will shuttle you to Anchorage Airport, where we all bid a fond farewell to our fellow Adventurers. Travel: Ferry & shuttle to airport Eat: on your own

Almost Gourmet Cuisine

Pedalers' camp kitchen turns out a wide variety of delectable dishes, perhaps some smoked salmon alfredo or mesquite marinated pork filets poached in wine, accompanied by garden greens salads, vegetables and plenty of pasta or potatoes to carbo load for the next day's ride.

And of course a good meals needs a good beverage, so the camp ice chest is stocked with regional craft beers available to guests each evening.

Bike touring is a sensational way to see more of the world

biking tours haines alaska

Mary Anne McMurren and Jeffrey Sprague were Scott McMurren's guides on Eugene, Oregon's bike trails along the Willamette River. (Scott McMurren)

Bicycle touring is a great way to see the countryside.

Whether you’re cruising on paved trails or bumping up and down on singletrack paths, bikes offer a chance to outrun the bugs and cover lots of miles. The trails around Anchorage offer a great way to warm up for two-wheeled adventures around the world.

My first European bike tour was a DIY project. We rented bikes outside of Paris and jammed them in the back of our rental car. Working our way through the Loire Valley, we parked the car at our hotel and rode through the French countryside past famous chateaus like Chambord and Chenonceau. Finding the best routes was a hit-or-miss affair, but we had a great time.

These days, you still can rent a bike and strike out on your own. Last week in Eugene, Oregon, I borrowed my brother-in-law’s bike and covered many of the bike paths along the Willamette River.

There are some incredible options, though, to work with companies that line out your itineraries, provide top-notch bikes and secure campsites or lodging along a pre-determined route.

In 1992, Jared Fisher started Escape Adventures in Las Vegas. I caught up with him when he was changing a flat on his gravel bike outside of Bentonville, Arkansas. “I’ve pedaled across the U.S. five or six times,” Fisher said. “I’ve even cycled from Sheep Mountain Lodge in Alaska over to Valdez.”

Today, Jared and his wife, Heather Fisher, run all kinds of active trips from their offices in Las Vegas and Moab, Utah. But they still have a special attachment to several multiday bike tours in the region.

“The Maze itinerary is our best trip out of Moab,” Jared Fisher said. “It’s a 3 1/2-hour drive from Moab just to get to the start.”

The five-day trip traverses some of the most remote sections of Canyonlands National Park. There are no hotels or lodges in the park, so it’s all “first-class camping” along the trail.

“You really don’t need to bring anything except a duffel with your clothes,” Fisher said. Guides set up the tents and cook the meals.

One particular feature of The Maze itinerary is camping near the Standing Rock site.

“We’re the only company that affords an overnight near the Standing Rock,” Fisher said. “Once camp is set up, you can sit out under the stars and even see the Milky Way. There’s no noise. You’re really out there.”

Tours are limited to seven riders. The cost is $1,660 per person.

The other popular guided trip out of Moab is the White Rim Trail for a four-day outing. The trail covers 100 miles in Canyonlands National Park. Again, there are no lodges, so the guides set up a camp each night and cook all the meals. The cost ranges from $990 to $1,099 per person.

“The White Rim Trail is the most popular mountain bike tour in the entire world,” Fisher said.

[ Best practices for trouble-free travel to the Lower 48 ]

There are many variations of these itineraries. A new addition this year is the combination of RV rentals and guided cycling trips. So, instead of camping out, cyclists can overnight in an RV. Escape Adventures and Blacksford RV rentals offer tours for both road bikers and mountain bikers.

Fisher’s favorite bike tour is along the north rim of the Grand Canyon. “There’s much less visitation along the north rim since it’s only open for about six months of the year,” he said. “There are mountains, trees, the Grand Canyon and beautiful night skies.”

The riding is not particularly hard, but the elevation ranges from 6,000 to 9,000 feet. Most of the time, cyclists are camping, although there are a couple of nights at casual inns since that’s all that’s available. The five-day tour costs between $1,349 and $2,499 per person. The camping gear rental kit is $100 and includes a tent, a sleeping pad, raised cost and other goodies. Mountain bike rentals range from $70 to $85 per day.

Bike tours are popular in Europe. One friend is planning her third “bike and barge” tour with a small Dutch company called Bike Planet . They’ve only got one barge, called the Iris. Since there are aunts, uncles and cousins going, not everyone is a born cyclist. The Bike Planet people make a point that there are e-bike options and options for non-cyclists as well.

Bike Planet’s popular nine-day itinerary departs from Amsterdam and connects with the Rhine River for a trip that features stops in Arnhem, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bonn and a couple of other smaller towns.

The cycling is easy — about 28 miles per day. Breakfast is included each day, as are six dinners on board. There are a couple of days when guests can check out the local offerings. The cost for this itinerary starts at 2,035 euros per person. It’s extra for a bike rental: 150 euros for a regular bike, or 250 euros for an e-bike.

Another group of friends flew to Vietnam for an adventure along the central coast. The 10-day tour, operated by Spice Roads, started in the city of Hue and included a visit to the beach community of Hoi An. Much of the course is along the coast, but there also are some hill climbs.

The group size is limited to a maximum of 16 riders. The average distance is 59 kilometers per day. The bike rental cost is extra: $200 for a mountain bike, or $425 for an e-bike. One participant noted that not everyone got an e-bike, “but there were some who wish they had!”

Spice Roads also offers several trips in Thailand and in Sri Lanka.

[ Airfare wars start with no notice. But staying informed helps a savvy traveler find the best deals. ]

If you want to see where world-class cyclists live, visit the town of Girona in northeast Spain. Located about 40 miles from Barcelona’s airport, the town is within easy reach of the Mediterranean coast, Spain’s wine-growing regions and the Pyrenees mountain range.

The Cycling House runs a variety of bike tours in Montana, Arizona, Italy and Spain. Many of their tours feature accommodations for the group in a large, private home. In Girona, the Cycling House offers weeklong trips both for road bike riders and for gravel bike riders.

Looking at the day-by-day itinerary from Girona, the rides are designed for serious cyclers. The Costa Brava ride for the second day is 41 miles with 3,200 feet of elevation gain. On day five, be prepared for a 64-mile ride with 4,900 feet of elevation gain.

If you love to ride, you’ll love Girona. You might even run into Alaska’s own Olympic cycling champion Kristen Faulkner on one of your rides!

You don’t have to look too far to find a biking option wherever you’re going. Just don’t forget your helmet!
