Museum of Discovery & Science | IMAX AutoNation Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement

  • May 16, 2024

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Former San Diego travel agent sentenced in school-trip embezzlement case

Marie colette martin, 53, was charged with spending funds she received on personal expenses rather than refunding parents after the trips were canceled due to covid.

A former San Diego-based travel agent who embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars paid by more than 150 parents for school trips that were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic was sentenced Monday to six months of home detention and six months of probation.

Marie Colette Martin, 53, was charged with spending funds she received on personal expenses rather than refunding parents after the trips were canceled.

According to the California Attorney General’s Office, Martin solicited the travel funds from parents at nine schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The trips would have sent eighth-grade students from those schools to Washington, D.C., and other East Coast locations in 2020, but the pandemic prevented the trips from happening.

When parents sought refunds, Martin declined, and the money instead went toward personal uses, including credit card purchases, rent and artwork, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Prosecutors say she was unable to refund the parents because she had already been “experiencing cash flow problems and commingling client funds” and had used the parents’ funds for personal expenses.

Martin, who was jointly prosecuted by the California Attorney General’s Office and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, pleaded guilty to one felony count of failure to return funds as a seller of travel. She may later petition to have the count reduced to a misdemeanor.

The crime bars her from registering as a seller of travel for seven years, according to prosecutors.

Martin had already paid around $256,000 in restitution as of Monday’s sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors say some of that money will go to victims, while other victims have already been refunded through the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation, which assists consumers who suffer losses for a variety of reasons, including failure to provide services.

Factbox-Top Takeaways From Putin's Trip to China

Reuters

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping shake hands at the gala event celebrating 75th anniversary of China-Russia relations in Beijing, China May 16, 2024. Sputnik/Sergei Guneev/Pool via REUTERS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin made a state visit to China on Thursday where he was greeted by China's Xi Jinping.

What are the main takeaways from the visit?

* Xi and Putin declare a "new era" partnership:

In a joint statement, 7,000 words long in Russian, Xi and Putin pledged a "new era" of partnership between the two most powerful rivals of the U.S., which they cast as an aggressive Cold War hegemon that was sowing chaos across the world.

They proclaimed opposition to the United States on a host of security issues and a shared view on everything from Taiwan and Ukraine to North Korea and cooperation on new peaceful nuclear technologies and finance.

There was little detail on what actual deals they agreed, though the meat of the meeting was expected to be hashed out informally over tea.

Putin took his new defence minister, Andrei Belousov, and a large delegation with him.

* Putin's China trip signals priorities:

The Latest Photos From Ukraine

By picking China for his first foreign trip since being sworn in this month for another six-year term, Putin is sending a message to the world about his priorities and the strength of his personal ties with Xi.

Xi greeted Putin on a red carpet outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where they were hailed by marching People's Liberation Army soldiers, a 21-gun salute on Tiananmen Square and children waving the flags of China and Russia.

* Russia and China detailed a host of grievances against the United States:

- Russia and China have serious concerns at "U.S. attempts to violate the strategic balance"

- Examples of this include: U.S. global missile defence involving the deployment of parts of it in regions around the world and in space.

- Developing high-precision non-nuclear weapons for potential “decapitation” strikes

- "Extended nuclear deterrence" with allies including Australia.

- Plans to deploy ground-based intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles (INF) in the Asia-Pacific and European regions, including their transfer to its allies.

- "The parties strongly condemn these extremely destabilizing steps, which pose a direct threat to the security of Russia and China."

- "The parties oppose the hegemonic attempts of the United States to change the balance of power in Northeast Asia by building up military power and creating military blocs and coalitions."

* Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller was not on the trip:

Gazprom, which holds about 16% of global gas reserves and employs 492,200 people, was once one of Russia's most powerful corporate empires - so powerful it was known as "a state within the state".

But the loss of a massive chunk of the European gas market due to Russia's war in Ukraine has hit it hard.

"Alexei Miller held talks with the Iranian leadership on the dates of Putin's visit to China," Gazprom said, referring to a working visit by Miller to Iran this week.

It was not immediately clear what Miller was talking to Iran, a major producer of natural gas, about. Miller, 62, is a close ally of Putin who has run Gazprom since 2001.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Were Seen Looking ‘in Love and Happy’ on Secret Lake Como Trip

preview for Taylor Swift’s Iconic Career Evolution

Page Six and Daily Mail ran photos this afternoon of the couple out on Monday night in Lake Como, Italy. They were seen holding hands while on a stroll . Paparazzi also photographed them having a candlelit dinner in the garden of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Swift appeared to have on a navy dress, while Kelce was wearing a white sweater and dark pants.

An eyewitness told Page Six that the couple was able to fly under the radar in Italy. “No one noticed Taylor’s presence on Lake Como,” the source said. “They walked in the night and had romantic candlelit dinners. They seem in love and happy.”

He had nothing but adoring things to say about Swift, her Eras Tour crew, and the audience at all her Paris concerts. “I mean, I don’t know if they’re just getting better or if I just keep forgetting how they are,” he said of her shows generally, as he has now attended five of them. “It was electric in there.” He said Paris in particular “was on a whole other level, man.”

He gave his accolades to the audience, telling them, “Shout out to Paris for showing up and showing up at all the concerts. It looked absolutely amazing for the first three shows. And that last show was every bit of electric and just energy all, all night, man. It was fun.”

Labour’s VAT raid to drive up the cost of school dinners

Labour’s plan to charge VAT on private education could include a tax on school dinners, tax experts have warned.

Parents are already facing a higher cost of private education if Labour wins the next general election and school fees become subject to 20pc VAT.

But it is feared the move would automatically bring dozens of co-curricular activities that are currently exempt from tax into the bracket, handing parents even more costs.

A source close to Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves refused to deny that the plans could include a 20pc levy on additional services offered by schools such as meals, sports tours, music lessons and school trips.

John Rainsford, of Evelyn Partners, a wealth manager, said: “The expectation is Labour would look to extend the VAT to also include school trips and so on because they are ultimately to do with education.

“Under current provisions education is exempt and services or goods closely linked to that are also exempt. Any supplies of education and closely connected services will be subject to VAT,” he said, adding that Labour would tax independent schools “as a bundled service”.

Currently, goods and services that are closely related to education are exempt from VAT. This includes school dinners, transport, school trips and accommodation at boarding schools.

Prices for boarding accommodation are around £10,000 a year per child in addition to tuition fees, whilst co-curricular activities can run into the thousands of pounds each academic term.

Dan Neidle, of Tax Policy Associates, said: “If Labour introduces VAT on private education and doesn’t mention boarding and the other stuff, then the other stuff will almost certainly become subject to VAT automatically.

“There’s a happy myth going round many private schools that all this is difficult [and that] there will be loads of loopholes,” he said, adding this was “all wrong” and that it would be “easy” for Labour to impose the charge.

Private school leaders have complained of being kept in the dark over the exact detail of Labour’s plans surrounding VAT.

David Woodgate, chief executive of the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association, said: “The problem is we don’t know what we don’t know.”

“Labour has announced a certain figure and said that will be raised from VAT in school fees. They haven’t given us any denomination at all as to how it will work. Sports and all of that kind of thing aren’t charged separately but [parents] will have questions for things that they do pay extra for, like piano lessons for instance, whether VAT will be levied on that.

He added: “Clearly parents have been living under a cost of living crisis. Affordability is important, they are bound to have concerns.”

Sir Keir is widely expected to announce that VAT exemptions on independent schools will be abolished as soon as his first day in Downing Street if his party wins the election.

The Labour leader could then have the levy in force by the beginning of the academic year. The day of the election is not yet known but it could come as late as January 2025.

The party’s frontbench U-turned last year on stripping schools of their charitable status, but remains committed to ending tax breaks for private education. Labour claims the move would raise £1.6bn to fund improving the quality of education at state schools.

Julie Robinson, chief executive of the Independent Schools Council, said: “We are yet to see a detailed plan from Labour. We have serious concerns about the policy as it stands, particularly its potential effects on children receiving SEND support, on military families and on those choosing schools that align with their faith.”

A Labour spokesman said: “The next Labour government will break down the barriers to opportunity by investing in our state schools and recruiting over 6,500 new teachers through ending the tax breaks for private schools.”
