Vienna State Opera – guided tours

On a 40-minute guided tour, experience the Vienna State Opera, one of the most significant opera houses in the world. Built in 1869 to plans by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, and reopened in 1955 following devastation in World War II, it offers its international audiences top-caliber music theater on some 300 days a year.

A peek behind the scenes of the Vienna State Opera , the world’s biggest repertory theater, reveals lots of things that are otherwise hidden from evening opera-goers. A tour provides lots of interesting information about the history, architecture and running of the Opera House.

From the foyer , the tour ascends the Grand Staircase and then through the ceremonial rooms (Teesalon, Marmorsaal, Schwindfoyer, Gustav-Mahler-Saal) to the auditorium with a view of the stage. Images that the whole world knows: The stalls transform once a year into a ballroom for the Vienna Opera Ball . Normally, the Viennese audience listens in from the tiers of seating.

How Do I Get to the Vienna State Opera?

The State Opera is located on the famous Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district.

The best way to get to the State Opera is from the Karlsplatz underground station, which you can take the U1, U2 and U4 to.

Alternatively, you can also take the 59A bus or the 1, 2, D, 62 or 71 tram to the Opernring station.

State Opera Cafe

Inside the State Opera is the Café Oper Wien, which it claims is “Vienna’s most musical café”.

The traditional coffee house with Viennese charm is a popular meeting place for music lovers, opera artists and visitors to the opera. With its traditional Viennese coffeehouse ambience and quickly served delicacies, the café attracts with enjoyment and cosiness, especially during the breaks in the performances.

History of the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918. 

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

Discover the attractions of the Austrian capital with this walking tour of Vienna that includes a guided tour of the State Opera House , one of the most iconic buildings in the city.

We'll begin our guided walk through Vienna's historic center at Albertinaplatz, next to the Danube Fountain .

During our tour, we'll learn about the great link between the House of Habsburg and the history of Spain . We'll review these links next to the Hofburg Imperial Palace , one of whose wings houses the Spanish Riding School . The activities of this important institution, which dates back to the 16th century, have been included on the list of  Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity .

After viewing the exterior architecture of these majestic buildings, we'll continue our tour through the center of Vienna at  St. Stephen's Cathedral . We'll observe the architectural styles of its façade, where we'll be able to appreciate elements of Romanesque and, above all, Gothic architecture.

Our next stop is the Heldenplatz , where Hitler announced the annexation of Austria to the Third Reich. From here, we'll head to the nearby Burggarten park , where we'll learn some curiosities about Austrian music next to the statue of Mozart .

The tour will end with a guided tour of the Vienna State Opera , where we'll continue to experience the Austrian passion for music by visiting the stalls and the stage area, one of the most famous opera temples  in the world.

Vienna Opera House: Overview of Choices, Tours and Tickets

While the Vienna State Opera is the main opera house in Vienna, there are three other opera houses you should know of. In the subsequent post I'm sharing my experiences at both venues and how to get tickets. You will also find tips of the best opera venue for children.

1. Vienna State Opera

Significantly, the State Opera is powered by a fantastic opera orchestra: Many members belong to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra . In regular intervals, world famous singers such as Edita Gruberova, Dimitri Hvorostovsky and Anna Netrebko appear on stage.

If you don't speak German, an electronic device in front of your seat provides English surtitles (or subtitles) an surtitles in Italian, French, Russian and Japanese. You can also access a synopsis and opera cast information in English. Visit  Vienna State Opera for an overview of the season's plays, securing tickets and dress code.

Booking Vienna Opera Tickets

Vienna Opera House. The Vienna State Opera House's repertoire comprises around 50 operas and 20 ballets per season (1st September to 30th June). However, performances at this venue  sell fast and are typically 98 percent sold out. Tour The Vienna Opera House

During the tour you will see rooms which are usually closed to the public such as the gorgeous Emperor's tearoom.

What I equally enjoyed was learning about famous opera directors, from Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler to Herbert von Karajan. If you want to go backstage, make sure you pick the right tour.

Vienna Opera Ball

Vienna Opera House. Once a year, the opera house rips off all seats in its stalls and replaces them with an elegant dance floor. The Vienna Opera Ball is a local cultural institution, attracting almost  6,000 visitors  every year. You can (actually must) dress up ultra glamorously, be happy to pony up a few hundred Euros, and be lucky enough to grab tickets in order to attend this top European socialite event. Live Streaming And Free Open Air Opera

Vienna Opera House Guide. These two attractions are wonderful because they open up the Vienna opera house, making it easy, cheap and cheerful to experience opera. During April, May, June and September you can watch  free live operas  on a large video screen mounted at a side wall of the opera building.

The opera house's  live streaming service lets you watch local opera performances from your home, live or on demand, for EUR 15. Definitely a nice way to stay in touch once you are back home.

2. Theater An Der Wien

The Theater an der Wien produces and stages many modern operas and brings classical operas into a contemporary setting, while also presenting rarely played baroque operas. Unlike the Vienna State Opera, each opera at the Theater an der Wien maintains the same cast throughout the various performances ( stagione system). With concerts and ballets, luckily, you won't need English surtitles that much.

During the Theater's extensive refurbishment until 2024 Vienna's Museumsquartier hosts all opera and theater performances, and concerts.

3. Volksoper Vienna

If you love musicals and comedies of error you will likely adore operettas. Johann Strauss and other local composers created beautiful music that goes with colourful costumes and funny acting. The best opera house to see an operetta is Volksoper.

4. Wiener Kammeroper

Vienna Opera House Guide.  Although the Kammeroper is a separate opera house, the cast belongs to Theater an der Wien. As per its definition, the Kammeroper should perform operas for a smaller number of singers and a smaller orchestra. At the Wiener Kammeroper's small basement theater, you can also experience grand operas such as Faust. Although the singers of the Theater an der Wien's Young Ensemble Theater are talented and praised, the intimate venue isn't always suitable for the performed plays.

Vienna State Opera House

The Vienna Opera House was one of the first major buildings as part of the Ringstrasse project. While the building was constructed, it did not officially open to the public until 1869 – and played Mozart on the premiere night. Since then the Vienna opera house has gained endless love, all thanks to the artistic influence it has had on the world.

How to Book Tickets at the Vienna Opera House?

  The Vienna Opera House features 50 operas and 20 ballet performances per season. Most of these are held between 1st September, to 30th June. Top Tip! Book your Vienna Opera tickets in advance!! While it might seem a little far, know that these tickets sell faster than other tickets. There is a good chance you will be put on hold, or not be able to come off the waiting list. This is why we suggest you plan in advance, making sure you do not miss an opportunity when in Vienna.

Is there a dress code for the Vienna Opera House?

Well, there is no official Vienna Staatsoper dress code on What to wear at the opera. We highly recommend that men take black-tie dresses when they visit the Vienna Opera House. Also, a dark suit is acceptable. Women can choose long or short elegant gowns, but a long dress is considered more formal. No-Go dress for the opera: Jeans, sneakers, and a T-Shirt.

The auditorium of the Vienna State Opera has 1709 seats and 567 standing places. The stage space is almost twice as large, making the Vienna State Opera home to one of the largest stages in the world.

The State Opera House

The front of the Staatsoper looks out onto Vienna’s Ringstraßen boulevard, but relatively wide streets and open spaces surround the other sides, too.

This standalone location gives the building a notable presence in Vienna’s city centre, like a grand diva towering above the orchestra pit. I often use it as a reference to guide people to other locations.

This presence feels entirely deserved given the Staatsoper’s status in the world of opera, invariably appearing in all sorts of top 10 lists.

A brief history

The opera house greeted its first visitors in 1869 as the Hofoper (court opera) for a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni .

Like many of Vienna’s landmarks, the building owes its existence to the removal of the city fortifications in the mid-19th century and the opening up for construction of the park-like Glacis area that kept the suburbs at bay.

Architect August von Sicardsburg (1813-1868) designed the basic Renaissance-style building, while Eduard van der Nüll (1812-1868) took care of the interior décor.

The public reaction at the time was broadly negative, and this criticism likely contributed to the untimely death of both architects before the official opening.

However, a newspaper article just days after that opening offered a robust defence of the two mens’ work, blaming Viennese pessimism and the population’s love of mockery and grumbling for the bad press. It stated (my translation):

The interior is such that the new opera house is perhaps the most beautiful theatre in Europe.

Unfortunately, the original building failed to escape the ravages of WWII, with allied bombs destroying large parts of it in 1945.

The rebuilding work took around ten years, with Beethoven’s Fidelio welcoming audiences at the reopening in 1955.

Today’s opera house looks especially fantastic at night (see the photo later in the article). The interior is, as that 19th-century writer remarked, quite gorgeous.

If you don’t attend a performance, I recommend the in-house tour that takes you through the building and out behind the surprisingly large stage. Some areas are actually fully original in their historical glory; the wonderful main staircase, for example, survived the aerial bombing intact.

Callas and Cruise

As noted earlier, the Staatsoper sits at the high table of world culture. The playing schedule varies daily, so you won”t find continuous runs of any one particular production.

Puccini’s Madame Butterfly might pine for a lost lover on Thursday, Strauss’s Salome do the dance of the seven veils on Friday, and Bottom make an ass of himself on Saturday in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream .

(Not to mention the occasional ballet thrown in for good measure: the Staatsoper opera also houses the Vienna State Ballet.)

Around 200 stagehands, vast numbers of costumes, swathes of scenery, and a whole lot of storage space combine to ensure sets can be switched in and out quickly, as required by the changing performance.

A permanent in-house ensemble also helps make such a dynamic schedule possible.

Guest performers, conductors, directors and others from the crème de la crème of the operatic universe complement the Staatsoper’s own team for selected productions.

Claudio Abbado, Luciano Pavarotti , Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Joan Sutherland, Anna Netrebko, Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, Gustav Mahler, José Carreras, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Riccardo Muti, and Herbert von Karajan are just some of the names who’ve worked at (or with) the Staatsoper.

It’s not just the prestigious operatic history that contributes to the opera house’s fame.

The Staatsoper hosts the world-famous Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball) in February , for example, and it even played a central role in one of the Mission Impossible films.

You can spot the building in other productions, too, like the Jack Ryan TV series , the The Recruit TV series , or the Sachertorte and The Woman in Gold movies.

So if anyone asks you what connects Callas and Cruise, you now have the answer.

Tickets & alternatives

See my advice on getting tickets , including the inexpensive option of standing space, where a night at the opera can cost little more than a morning coffee.

Incidentally, every seat and standing place inside has its own small screen displaying subtitles for the opera in question, with a choice of languages (including English and German, of course).

Aside from a ticket or tour, you have a couple of other ways to experience the joys of the building or Viennese opera in general:

• The Staatsoper offers a live streaming service with broadcasts of occasional performances or events
• Google features the Vienna State Opera in its Arts & Culture project
• Many historical venues put on special visitor-friendly concerts featuring better-known light classical music and select operatic pieces
• Vienna has two other major opera houses: the Volksoper and the Theater an der Wien

How to get to the Staatsoper

You probably pass the Staatsoper on your travels around the city centre; it actually marks the start of my suggested walking tour of Vienna.

The building’s a short walk from the pedestrianised centre: just wander up Kärntner Straße from Stephansdom cathedral, for example. If you want accommodation close by, then here are some suggestions.

Subway: the Oper exit from Karlsplatz subway station drops you pretty much at the doorstep. Karlsplatz is on the U1, U2 and U4 subway lines. Alternatively, the very central Stephansplatz station (U1 and U3) is just up the road, too.

Tram/bus: there’s a tram stop opposite (Oper/Karlsplatz), served by the 1, 2, D, 71 and 62 trams. Or take the 2A city centre bus to Kärntner Straße.

About the Production

Short summary.

Macbeth, army commander in the service of King Duncan, is prophesied by three witches that he himself will become king. But the price is high,

and his bloody path of self-destruction soon begins. Urged on by the ambitious Lady Macbeth, he commits murder and treason to secure his power. But his actions catch up with him when he is forced to face off against his adversary Macduff and an insurgent army. The tragedy reaches its climax in a devastating battle that seals Macbeth's downfall and makes Malcolm, the murdered king's son, the new king of Scotland.

Macbeth and Banco, the king's generals, return from the war.

Witches prophetically greet Macbeth, Lord of Glamis, as Lord of Cawdor and King of Scotland. Banco also wants to know his future. He is to become the father of kings. Soldiers announce Macbeth's appointment as Lord of Cawdor.

Macbeth shudders at the violence with which he could make the second prophecy come true. Banco sees through his temptation.

The witches expect Macbeth to visit them again soon. A letter from her husband tells Lady Macbeth about the encounter with the witches. She knows his ambition, but doubts his willingness to use violence. She is determined to remove his inhibitions.

A servant announces the imminent arrival of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth pins all her hopes on the night that the king will spend under her roof. Before the king and his entourage arrive, Macbeth and the lady find time to communicate.

Macbeth sees a bloody dagger leading him to the king's bedroom. At the agreed signal, he enters.

After the murder, the completely distraught Macbeth refuses to enter the room again in order to slip the murder weapon to the sleeping guards. Lady Macbeth does so. There is a knock at the door. Lady Macbeth drags her husband away with her.

Macduff and Banco discover the dead man and raise the alarm. Those who have rushed to the scene curse the murderer and call for God's judgment.

Duncan's son Malcolm has fled to England. He is believed to be his father's murderer. Macbeth is king.

To prevent the prophecy that Banco will be the father of kings from coming true, he decides to kill Banco and his son Fleance.

Lady Macbeth becomes intoxicated with the power of life and death. Assassins hired by Macbeth lure Banco and his son into an ambush. Banco, who has accepted Macbeth's invitation despite his suspicions, is murdered. Fleance manages to escape.

The new king and queen give a party. Lady Macbeth sings a drinking song. One of the murderers informs Macbeth of Banco's death and Fleance's escape. As Macbeth sits down on the vacant armchair, Banco's ghost sits on it. Lady Macbeth and the guests do not see him. The ghost disappears. Macbeth has the drinking song repeated. Banco's ghost appears once more. Macbeth decides to go to the witches. The Lady reviles his fear of ghosts. The party observes the ruler's disintegration. Macduff, a Scottish nobleman, will leave the country.

The witches are at work. Macbeth wants to know his fate.

The witches conjure up spirits. They prophesy: Macbeth should beware of Macduff; no one born of a woman can wound him; until the forest of Birnam comes against him, he is invincible. Macbeth wants to know whether Banco's family will reign. Eight kings appear, the last carrying a mirror: Banco. Laughing, he shows the long line of his crowned descendants. Macbeth faints.

Lady Macbeth is told about the apparitions. Macbeth and his wife will destroy Macduff's and Banco's families.

A refugee camp on the border between Scotland and England. Large sections of the Scottish population flee their country to escape Macbeth's tyranny.

Macduff thinks of his wife and children. He has left them behind in Scotland. Macbeth has murdered them. Macduff wants to carry out God's revenge.

Malcolm is on his way to Scotland with an English army. In the forest of Birnam, he orders the soldiers to disguise themselves with branches. Fugitives join the army.

A doctor and a chambermaid observe the sleepwalking Lady Macbeth. She repeatedly tries to remove a supposed bloodstain from her hand. Macbeth senses that death is near. He is without hope. The chambermaid reports the queen's death. Soldiers announce the approach of the Forest of Birnam. Macbeth calls for death or victory.

Macduff, who was once cut from his mother's womb, kills Macbeth, Macbeth is "cursed by God and man".

Malcolm is King of Scotland.

About the Direction

Barrie Kosky's theater often touches, but sometimes it grips by showing the familiar - the world, life, relationships between people - broken in such a way that it remains shockingly recognizable. In his Macbeth production at the Staatsoper, the director creates a darkness that provides additional density and results in the invisibility of all the characters.

"This darkness doesn't just come from Shakespeare's play or Verdi's score, it is the play itself. A darkness from which one cannot escape, which dominates the scene from the very first moment. I would say with regard to Shakespeare that no other of his works is so strongly characterized by it. And Verdi distilled the essence of it: an incredible, almost claustrophobic nihilism," says the director.

About the Music

The variety of this opera and the dangerous beauty of some scenes are fascinating, even after repeated listenings. Already in the Preludio and in the Introduction of Act 1, everything is touched upon with a heavy sense of meaning: the dark, unison F minor melody in 6/8' time, the constantly recurring, piercing march-like dotting in the brass, the woodwind-influenced witches' laughter, the ominously repeated downward 32nd-note figure in the strings, which will reappear in the murder scene, as well as Lady Macbeth's elegiac sleepwalker melody. Even if the musical language has changed considerably over the last 170 years: Certain things such as Verdi's musical and motivic economy, his instrumental clarity in the interplay between the orchestra and the singers and his unerring sense of how to build up a dramaturgically concise internal tension are as fascinating today as they were then (Johannes Maria Staud)

Nice to Know

One of the reasons why Macbeth was long overshadowed by many other Verdi operas was not only the rather unusual character of the work, but also the difficulty of adequately casting the two main roles. Lady Macbeth in particular, which is not as dramatically developed in Shakespeare as in Verdi, is one of the most difficult roles in opera literature. It demands a "prima donna assoulta" that is rarely found in any generation . Famous in this connection with Macbeth is a letter from Verdi to the librettist Salvadore Cammarano (1848), in which he wishes Lady Macbeth to have "una voce aspra, soffocata, cupa" ("a sharp, stifled, dark voice"). Verdi was concerned with a clear departure from the vocal-aesthetic ideal of pure, beautiful singing, even if he continued to build on the principles of the bel canto of his musical predecessors. When can i buy standing room tickets.

In which languages are the operas sung?

Our operas are sung in the original languages - these vary depending on the work.

At each seat, subtitles in different languages can be switched on or off via a separate subtitle screen. In addition to the original language of the opera, you can choose from up to eight languages: German, English, Italian, French, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin).

Can I return my tickets in the event of a change of performance, change of cast or late arrival?

In the event of a change of performance, you can of course return or exchange your tickets.

As changes to the cast cannot be ruled out due to illnesses or other hindrances of artists, there is no entitlement to a refund of the ticket price or exchange in this case.

Tickets cannot be returned or exchanged if you are not admitted to the auditorium due to being late (even after the interval).

About Your Visit

The cloakrooms are located next the the entrances at the Operngasse. You can find additional cloakrooms on the left and right side of the balcony and the gallery and in the boxes. All cloakrooms are free of charge.

We ask you to be on time when attending the performances. Entry to the auditorium is not allowed after the performance has started. This also applied after the break.

Food and Drink

Our gastronomy opens at the same time entry is permitted. You can enjoy some snacks and drinks before the performance starts or you can book a table for the break.

Taylor Swift Fans Gather in Vienna, Austria amid Canceled Concerts to Sing and Trade Friendship Bracelets

Taylor Swift fans are flooding the streets of Vienna after the singer’s Eras Tour shows in Austria were canceled following an alleged terror plot .

The pop star was set to play three shows at the Ernst Happel Stadium from Aug. 8-10.

Now, fans are keeping optimistic by gathering in the city and singing along to her top hits and trading their signature friendship bracelets .

Travel blogger Kimberly Kephart shared videos to her Instagram Stories of a large group singing along to multiple songs by Swift, including "You Need to Calm Down" and the title track from her 2019 album Lover . 

She also showed signs hanging from residences in support of Swift and shared that her Airbnb host gave her free tickets to see a Mozart concert at the local opera house.

Others have taken to social media to share emotional messages about the experience. "The Vienna Taylor Swift shows may have been canceled, but you can’t break the spirit of Swifties. This is girlhood. Turning something ugly into something beautiful,” one person wrote in a caption of a video of the group singing the extended version of "All Too Well" from Swift’s Red re-recording.

The official Instagram account for the Vienna Tourist Board is also showering Swifties with support during this time by rebranding their profile bio to read "Taylor’s Version" and "Welcome to Vienna, it's been waiting for you."

The account has shared several entertainment options for ticket holders in the city for the canceled shows on their Instagram Stories . They wrote that several of the city’s museums are offering free entry this weekend and the Swarovski Kristallwelten store will give fans a "crystal surprise" to those with a valid concert ticket, among other offerings.

The three shows were canceled on Aug. 7 after authorities confirmed that two men were arrested in connection to a planned attack at the concerts. A message originally shared on promoter Barracuda Music's page read "we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety," while stating that all tickets "will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days."

In a press conference that day, Vienna's head of police Gerhard Pürstl said immediate danger has been "minimized" but that an "abstract danger" remained in the city, per the BBC . 

The following day, Austrian officials released additional information about the planned attack.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria's Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, shared in a news conference that the 19-year-old Austrian suspect they detained admitted to intending "to carry out an attack" at Swift’s concert "using explosives and knives," according to NBC News , CNN and Le Monde .

This tour runs for approximately 1 hour. This time is from when one of our guides meets guests from the Welcome Centre on the Lower Concourse through to the end of the tour.  

What to know before you go

We stage lots of live performances, so venues are subject to availability at the time of your tour.

You’ll be on your feet for a guided tour, there are over 300 stairs, so flat comfortable shoes are recommended. Your feet will thank you!  If you have mobility concerns, you may wish to take a Mobility Access Tour . 

We can’t store suitcases or large bags, however you can contact the nearest storage facility at  [email protected]

Prams and buggies cannot be used on the tour as they are not allowed in our venues. Videoing is not allowed.

There are plenty of photo opportunities. Your tour guide will advise you if photos are not to be taken at any point.

The Sydney Opera House Car Park, operated by Wilson Parking, is open and available to use. Wilson Parking offer discounted parking if you book ahead. Please see  the Wilson Parking website  for details.

Please check the  Transport NSW website  for the latest advice and information on travel. You can catch public transport (bus, train, ferry) to Circular Quay and enjoy a six min walk to the Opera House. 

The tour meeting point is at the Welcome Centre located on the Lower Concourse of the Opera House.

It’s a great idea to arrive early, grab a drink and soak up the view. Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour to allow sufficient time to cloak any large bags.

This should allow enough time for the mandatory visual inspections and/or cloaking of bags and personal belongings by Opera House staff before starting your tour.

Where possible, please leave bags at home. If you bring a bag, those larger than A4 size will need to be cloaked before you can go on the tour. We're unable to store suitcases or large bags as we have limited cloaking facilities.

Mobile phones are permitted on the tour however please ensure they are switched off or on silent for the duration of the tour.

You will have the opportunity to visit some of the Opera House’s many venues and theatres on this tour.

Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna canceled after Austrian police say foiled terrorist plot targeted shows

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Vienna have been canceled because of what Austrian police say was a planned terrorist attack targeting the concerts.

“With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety,” Barracuda Music, an event organizer in the city, posted Wednesday evening on Instagram.

Taylor Nation, an Instagram account run by Swift’s team, reposted the message to its story.

According to the post, all tickets will be refunded and ticketholders can visit a website to request refunds.

Swift's website also appears to reflect the cancellation. The Vienna shows under the "tour" tab now have a note accompanying the date and location information.

"*All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days," it says.

Swift has yet to say anything on social media, nor has she confirmed the cancellations.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer shared his disappointment over the cancellations on X and said the situation was serious. He thanked officials for identifying the threat early and preventing what could have been a tragedy.

Swift was scheduled to perform at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the international leg of the Eras Tour.

Earlier, officials said two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with allegations of plans to attack major events in Vienna, including Swift's coming concerts .

Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement is looking for an additional person or people who may have some knowledge of the plans.

One of the individuals who were arrested by Austrian federal and state police was a 19-year-old who is alleged to have pledged his allegiance to ISIS, Vienna State Police Director Franz Ruf and Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl said at a news conference Wednesday.

Ruf said Thursday in an interview with Austria’s public broadcaster ORF that the suspect had uploaded an oath of allegiance to the current leader of ISIS to an internet account just a few weeks ago.

The pair had aspirational plans for attacking Vienna’s major events sites and specifically had homed in on this coming weekend’s Swift concerts, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the matter. They both became radicalized through the internet and are alleged to have had specific and detailed plans for how to carry out an attack, the officials said.

They had been under surveillance for some time and were well-known to the Austrians, the officials said.

A bomb squad found chemical substances when the 19-year-old was arrested, authorities said. Investigators were working to determine whether the substances could have been used to build a bomb, authorities said.

Officials said that the 19-year-old bought chemicals but not all the components needed to assemble a bomb and that most likely he would not have been able to do before this weekend’s events.

However, the officials say Austrian law enforcement believed that they should be taken into custody to make sure the pair did not try to conduct an attack using other means.

Ultimately, the two were arrested as officials announced a robust security plan had been put in place for the Swift concerts and Vienna at large. Swift’s team then announced that the concerts would be canceled.

Austria’s Cobra unit, which is similar to the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, assisted with the arrests.

Two U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said Austrian law enforcement are looking for an additional individual or individuals who may have some knowledge of this attempted attack.

Officials in Europe and in the U.S. told NBC News that there was no specific plot to injure Swift herself but that the attack was focused on the event.

A police official had said earlier that there were no plans to cancel the concerts and told reporters that “the concrete danger has been minimized.” It is not clear why those plans changed.

Swift has spoken about her concerns of a terrorist attack at one of her stadium shows. In 2019, she told Elle magazine it was her biggest fear.

“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” Swift said ahead of the Lover Tour, which was then canceled because of Covid.

She added, “There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

“My fear of violence has continued into my personal life,” she said. “I carry QuikClot army grade bandage dressing, which is for gunshot or stab wounds.”

Swift rarely cancels shows. Most recently, she postponed the second of three Eras shows in Rio de Janeiro because of extreme temperatures after a fan died at the first of the shows owing to the heat.

Swift’s  “The Tortured Poets Department”  was released at midnight (and subsequently at 2 a.m.) on Friday, April 19.

While every listener will likely come away with their own favorites, we particularly enjoyed the sleek, synthy “Fortnight,” icy “So Long, London,” anthemic “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a bombastic slow build of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and gorgeously arranged “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus.”

Taylor Swift cancels Vienna Eras tour concerts after two arrested in alleged terror plot

Taylor Swift 's three Eras Tour concerts in Vienna were canceled after government officials confirmed a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, the local concert promoter announced Wednesday.

The security situation was very serious and a tragedy was averted, Austria's Chancellor Karl Nehammer wrote in a social media post .

"We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety," said Barracuda Music, the promoter for the Austrian shows. "All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days."

Swift had been set to perform in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Earlier Wednesday, Vienna Federal Ministry of the Interior officials confirmed the arrest of two individuals who are "suspected of having planned attacks at major events," including Swift's concerts.

"During our investigations, we identified preparatory actions and noted that the 19-year-old suspect had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna," said Franz Ruf, director general for public security. He alleged that the suspect, an Austrian citizen, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

Another suspect was later arrested in Vienna. Police searched the residence of one of the suspects in Ternitz, Lower Austria, and were analyzing items from the home. Local media, citing police sources, said three suspects were still on the run.

"The cancellation of the Taylor Swift concerts by the organizers is a bitter disappointment for all fans in Austria," Nehammer wrote in an X post translated by the social media site.

He thanked emergency services that are investigating at "full speed."

'Making sure that her fans are kept safe'

Officials initially said police would increase security measures at the shows, but the performances were ultimately called off. Swift has performed 126 Eras Tour concerts so far, and these are her first cancellations. Other dates have been postponed due to weather.

This isn't the first time a concert has become a target. In 2017, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. The brothers responsible for the attack wanted to "advance the ideology of Islam," according to the judge who sentenced the surviving sibling.

“It’s a choice you never want to make, but she would have a really good rapport with the local police and government agencies,” says Andrea Davis, the president and CEO of the  Resiliency Initiative , a global consulting company focused on crisis management and risk mitigation planning. “These were credible threats, and it was the right thing to do. She has a pattern of making sure that her fans are kept safe.”

In fact, Swift confessed in Elle magazine in 2019 ahead of her Reputation Stadium Tour that her biggest fear concerns her fans' safety.

"After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting , I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months," she wrote. "There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe."

Swift's only remaining European tour dates are five nights at Wembley Stadium in London from Aug. 15-20. She then returns to North America in October before wrapping up the Eras Tour in December.

Taylor Swift fans react: 'It's really devastating'

It's not uncommon for Swift's fans to cross oceans to see her perform , and many ticketholders are heartbroken over the cancellations.

Emily Reyes drove with her boyfriend John Bechtel and his sister Hannah Bechtel from Greenville, South Carolina, to Charlotte, North Carolina. "We paid for parking and we had just gotten around to our gate when I saw that all the Vienna shows had been canceled," Reyes, 23, says.

In April, she got three tickets to a Vienna show because it was cheaper than Swift's fall shows in Miami, and she wanted to surprise her sister-in-law. She made a custom "Reputation" catsuit to wear Saturday night.

"A lot of people are traveling for these shows, and it's really devastating," she says. "I wish that they could have rescheduled and just had a really high security to check everything and all belongings — even if that means clear bags and getting patted down and going through metal detectors."

Around 65,000 people were expected to attend each night as well as up to 15,000 people outside the stadium without tickets, which fed security concerns.

Other Swifties took to social media to share their disappointment over the jarring development.

• “We were meant to go and see Taylor Swift in Vienna tomorrow night,” @jessiblah wrote on X. “We were just saying we would start to make our friendship bracelets, I had packed the beads in my case. I’m heartbroken.”
• “I am devastated. For over a year I looked forward to this,” X user @Natascha_Strobl wrote. “I made all the bracelets. Taylor Swift in my home city. And now it’s not happening. I have no words. She will never come to Vienna again. That‘s just it. This meant so much. I so wanted to go this concert.”
• “I will need 3-5 business years to recover emotionally from Taylor Swift‘s shows being cancelled in Vienna,” @DJChenks wrote on X.

First cancellations of the Eras Tour

Of Swift’s 126 Eras Tour concerts, she has postponed two shows, delayed a show and canceled two opening acts due to weather.

In Nashville on May 7, a torrential downpour delayed the concert by four hours. Swift didn’t wrap until 1:30 a.m. On July 1, Gracie Abram’s opening set in Cincinnati was canceled after heavy rain delays. Swift brought Abrams out for a duet during her surprise set. In Buenos Aires, Swift pushed back her Oct. 10 show to Oct. 12 after heavy rain fell on the Argentinian capital.

"I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew,"  she wrote on X , formerly Twitter.

A week later in Rio de Janeiro, she moved her Nov. 18 concert to Nov. 20 because of sweltering temperatures, one day after a fan died at her show.

On Feb. 23, Sabrina Carpenter’s opening set was canceled in Sydney due to lightning.

Tickets to be refunded for Taylor Swift's Vienna shows

For fans with resale tickets through StubHub, the company says it will provide buyers with a 120% voucher toward another purchase. “Buyers who prefer a 100% cash refund can make the request directly in their StubHub wallet,” the site said Wednesday in a statement.

Barracuda Music, the Austrian tour promoter, posted that fans can expect full refunds within 10 business days and can get updates at https://www.oeticket.com/help/updates/ .

Second violent incident involving Taylor Swift fans

This is the second Swift-related violent incident in just over a week.

On July 29,  three children — ages 9, 7 and 6 — died after a mass stabbing  that injured 10 others in Southport, U.K., during a Taylor Swift-themed class meant for children.

Swif t spoke out on the incident  the day after the attack, saying she was "at a complete loss."

"The horror of yesterday's attack is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock," she wrote on her  Instagram story .

An 18-year-old has been charged, and a wave of false messaging online that wrongly identified the suspect as an Islamist migrant triggered days of rioting. More than 140 people have been charged in relation to that violence.

The film’s star, Blake Lively , has not made the impact in movies that she did on television with “Gossip Girl” (though she had a hit with the shark thriller “The Shallows” and was very good in Ben Affleck’s “The Town” and Oliver Stone’s “Savages”). But in “It Ends with Us,” she has a role she can sink her acting chops into. She fills the screen with her acutely aware and slightly tremulous radiance. She plays Lily Bloom, an aspiring flower-shop entrepreneur who we meet when she returns home for the funeral of her father, who during the eulogy she can’t think of one nice thing to say about (she’s got a list numbered to 5, all left blank). So there’s a forbidding backstory there.

She has bought a beat-up old storefront in the Back Bay, which she renovates and transforms into a flower shop with a lavishly ornate shabby-chic aesthetic. She hires Allysa (played by the always-welcome Jenny Slate), and the two become best buddies. That’s when the first twist happens: Ryle wanders into the store, because it turns out that he’s Allysa’s brother. So he and Lily reconnect, and she agrees, with a great deal of caution, to give him a chance. The way the movie is set up, he’s got to prove himself to her and to the audience.

At the same time, the film flashes back to Lily in  high school (where she’s played by Isabela Ferrer, who matches up with Lively eerily well). There, we see her fall into a relationship with Atlas (Alex Neustaedter), a sensitive classmate she meets when he’s homeless, squatting in an abandoned building across the street from her family’s house. As we learn, he has a good reason to be on the street (symbolized by how he got his scarred hand), and though she helps rescue him, their connection is about something more basic: They click (despite the ridicule she gets from her classmates about it). We wonder: What’s the link between this romance and the one brewing between Lily and Ryle? Is she drawn to bad boys? Outsiders?

Love stories have more or less faded out of mainstream cinema, and it’s gratifying to see one that isn’t a rom-com, for once. As Ryle puts his player ways behind him, we want to see Lily happy, and we think: Maybe this is it. Then, one evening, at a hip eatery, the restaurant’s owner drops by the table, and Lily notices a familiar scarred hand. It is Atlas — now back from eight years in the military and other experiences. He looks…different. That’s because he’s played by a different actor, Brandon Sklenar (who suggests a baby-faced Russell Crowe), but also because he has aged into adulthood like fine wine. Aha, we think. So here’s the movie. Lily falls in love with the charismatic but questionable Ryle; sweet, chivalrous Atlas returns from her past. Who will she go with? The answer, at first, seems obvious (the blast from the past! à la “Casablanca”). But Ryle appears to be a born-again romantic. Maybe the movie is going to undercut our expectations?

It does, though not in the way we’re expecting. “It Ends with Us” is a story of how people repeat bad patterns in their lives, even (or maybe especially) when they don’t realize it. And the way this is conveyed is at once the essence of soap opera and also quite emotionally shrewd. For Lily really loves Ryle, and just like her we experience their relationship from the inside. When we see a glint of angry fire in Ryle, we want it to go away. Justin Baldoni’s performance is rivetingly layered — he makes Ryle a compartmentalized man, one who’s truly trying yet is unable to see himself.
