Oman has dropped its tourist visa requirement for visitors from 103 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand. Travelers are now allowed to stay for up to 10 days if they have a hotel reservation, health insurance and a return ticket out of the country.

Previously, all tourists entering Oman had to apply for a visa online in advance of their visit, and the visa would be valid for either 10 days, at a cost of about US$13, or 30 days for $52.

Oman has been slowly opening its borders since October  when international flights were permitted for residents and citizens abroad. At the end of November, tourist visas were issued for the first time in about eight months. Tourism is the fastest-growing non-oil industry in Oman, and accommodation providers and tour operators are eager to see visitors return.

Before the pandemic, Oman started to better connect itself to its neighbors in the region and become more accessible. In 2019, Dubai’s public transport system started a bus route that terminates in Muscat . Oman’s visa application process also went online last year, though visitors from many countries will no longer need to access this system with the new visa-free travel announcement.

Oman has recorded almost 127,000 cases since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but the number of new cases appears to be on a downward trend. New arrivals must complete an online pre-registration form before departure and have a PCR test on arrival at their own expense (about $65). Passengers must also download a contact tracing app and take another PCR test after a week of isolation. Travelers’ health insurance is required to cover at least 30 days of coronavirus treatment. The full list of nationalities that can now visit Oman visa-free can be found here .

Boosting the tourism industry

The decision to allow visa-free entry was made to help Oman’s tourism industry. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the Sultanate of Oman saw a 348% increase in tourists in 2022 compared to 2021, with 2.9 million tourists visiting Oman in 2022.

In conclusion, Oman’s decision to allow visa-free entry for tourists from 103 countries has benefited the country’s tourism industry, as evidenced by an increase in tourist arrivals and revenue for hotels. Requirements for the citizens of Oman visa-free countries

According to Oman’s visa policy, there are only 6 countries whose citizens can enter the country without a visa. Five of them are from the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), meaning Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain . The citizens of the 5 GCC countries can stay in Oman indefinitely, while the nationals of New Zealand can spend up to 3 months there. All they need to enter the country is a passport.

The visa-exemption rule also applies to the holders of diplomatic and official passports of Russia and South Korea, but they too can stay up to 90 days inside Oman. The rule also applies to a few other nationalities that have a valid visa or an entrance stamp of the Emirate of Dubai that is valid for at least another 21 days. A similar guideline exists for the visa holders for Qatar. If you wish to find out more about the Oman visa process, for both the visa-free countries and those who do require a visa, continue reading this article.

Omani passport gets stronger; visa-free travel to 86 nations

Muscat – Oman has jumped seven places to 58th in the Henley Passport Index in first half of 2024, which is based on official data from International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Oman was ranked 65th in the 2023 rankings when its citizens could travel visa-free to 82 countries. This has now gone up to 86 destinations.

The index ranks all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

In the GCC, the UAE made it into the top ten for the first time, having added an impressive 152 destinations since the index’s inception in 2006 to achieve its current visa-free score of 185, and rising a remarkable 53 places in the ranking from 62nd to ninth position in the process.

Dr Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, said the country’s meteoric ascent “is the result of  concerted efforts by the Emirati government to position the UAE as a global hub for business, tourism and investment”.

In the GCC, the UAE is followed by Qatar – ranked 46th with visa-free travel to 107 countries – Kuwait (49th and 99), Saudi Arabia (56th and 88) and Bahrain (57th and 87).

Singapore breaks away from the peloton of six countries that shared the top spot on the Henley Passport Index issued at the beginning of the year, reclaiming its title as the world’s most powerful passport in the latest ranking published on July 23.

The city-state also sets a new record score, with its citizens now enjoying access to 195 travel destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free.

France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain dropped to joint-second place, each with visa-free access to 192 destinations, and an unprecedented seven-nation cohort, each with access to 191 destinations without a prior visa. Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea and Sweden now sit in third place on the ranking.

The UK hangs onto fourth place along with Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland, despite its visa-free destination score falling to 190. The US, on the other hand, continues its now decade-long slide down the index, dropping down to eighth spot, with access to 186 destinations visa-free.

Afghanistan remains firmly entrenched as the world’s weakest passport, losing access to yet another destination in the past six months, leaving its citizens with access to only 26 countries visa-free – the lowest score ever recorded in history of the 19-year-old index.

Commenting on the July 2024 edition of the Henley Global Mobility Report , Dr Christian H Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, said, “The general trend over the past two decades has been towards greater travel freedom, with the global average number of destinations travellers are able to access visa-free nearly doubling from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, the global mobility gap between those at the top and bottom of the index is now wider than it has ever been, with top-ranked Singapore able to access a record-breaking 169 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan.”

Muscat – In 2023, Oman was ranked 65th, with its citizens able to travel visa-free to 82 countries. This number has now increased to 86 destinations, reflecting an improvement in global mobility for Omani passport holders. The Henley Passport Index, based on official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. This edition highlights a widening gap in global mobility, with Singapore reclaiming the top spot for offering its citizens visa-free access to a record-breaking 195 destinations.

The UAE has made history in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, breaking into the top ten for the first time. The UAE’s passport holders can now access 185 destinations visa-free, a remarkable rise from 62nd place in 2006. Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, attributed this rapid ascent to the Emirati government’s efforts to establish the UAE as a global hub for business, tourism, and investment. “Our research has consistently shown a strong correlation between a country’s visa-free score and its economic prosperity. Nations with higher visa-free scores tend to enjoy greater GDP per capita, increased foreign direct investment, and more robust international trade relationships,” he noted. Within the GCC, the UAE is followed by Qatar, ranked 46th with visa-free access to 107 countries, Kuwait (49th and 99 destinations), Saudi Arabia (56th and 88 destinations), and Bahrain (57th and 87 destinations). Globally, Singapore has reclaimed its position as the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 195 destinations. This achievement sets a new record, surpassing the six countries that previously shared the top spot at the beginning of the year. France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain have dropped to joint-second place, each with visa-free access to 192 destinations. An unprecedented seven-nation cohort, comprising Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden, now sits in third place with access to 191 destinations. The UK maintains its fourth-place ranking, sharing the position with Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland, despite its visa-free destination score falling to 190. The US continues its decade-long decline in the index, dropping to eighth place with visa-free access to 186 destinations. Afghanistan remains the lowest-ranked passport, with its citizens having visa-free access to only 26 countries, the lowest score ever recorded in the 19-year history of the index. An exclusive research by global data intelligence firm New World Wealth, featured in the Henley Global Mobility Report 2024, highlights the 20 fastest growing cities in the world for millionaires. It lists Shenzhen and Hangzhou in China, with millionaire growth rates of 140 percent and 125 percent, respectively, as two of the most important places to be able to access visa-free over the coming decades. It also lists Bengaluru in India, which saw 110 percent growth in millionaires between 2013 and 2023, Austin and Scottsdale in the US, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Sharjah in the UAE.

Muscat: Omani citizens can visit 79 destinations without a visa.

According to henleypassportindex.com, Omanis can travel without a visa to key Asian countries like Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea and Sri Lanka. In Europe, Omanis can travel visa-free to the United Kingdom, Kosovo, Serbia, Belarus and Albania. Omanis can travel to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen without visa. As per the report of the National Centre of Statistics and Information (NCSI), Omanis constituted 83.8 per cent of the outbound tourists from the Sultanate. Nearly, the number of outbound tourists from Oman increased to six million in 2018 from 3.3 million in 2017.  According to the Henley Passport Index, passports are ranked according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world’s largest database of travel information. The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations — including micro-states and territories. For each travel destination, if no visa is required for passport holders, then a score of 1 is created for that passport. This also applies if passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) upon entry.  These visa types require no pre-departure government approval.

New Zealand has been ranked fourth in the latest power index.

If you have a New Zealand passport count yourself lucky; it’s been ranked one of the most powerful in the world.

The 2024 Henley Passport Index has been released; a ranking uses exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) to calculate how powerful 199 different passports are.

Passports are ranked according to their global mobility by calculating how many nations a passport holder can visit visa-free.

In 2023, New Zealand was ranked joint sixth but has steadily moved up the list. This year, the black and silver passport has been ranked fourth, allowing Kiwi travellers to visit 190 destinations on https://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/holidays/ without a visa.

New Zealand shares fourth place with the UK , Norway, Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium.

Singapore takes first place, offering passport holders 195 visa-free destinations they can travel to. The second place is jointly held by France , Italy , Germany, Spain and Japan .

In third, 191 destinations are available to those with passports from Ireland, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and South Korea.

Is a New Zealand passport more powerful than Australia’s?

According to the latest index, the Kiwi passport is better for travellers than Australia’s, but only just. Australia is ranked fifth with Portugal and both have visa-free access to 189 destinations.

What is the deciding destination Aussies can’t visit without a visa but Kiwis can? Chile.

All other destinations, from the Vatican City to Uzbekistan welcome travellers from Australia and New Zealand without requiring a visa.

This is the second time New Zealand ranked fourth in the Henley Passport Index and is the highest ranking it’s achieved since the index started in 2006. In previous years, the passport has been hovered between fourth and ninth place.

The bottom-ranked passports in position 100 to 103 are Pakistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan in last place. The latter passport only offers visa-free travel to 26 other destinations.

What counts as ‘visa-free’ travel?

Now, just because a Kiwi can travel to a country “visa-free” it doesn’t mean they don’t need to do additional paperwork before travelling.

For example, the US is marked as a “visa-free” destination for Kiwis, however, you must have an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) before boarding a flight to the US. This can be done online in 20 minutes but must still be done.

Meanwhile, other countries, such as Australia or Indonesia, grant Kiwi visitors an automatic temporary visitor visa on arrival. These almost always are valid for a limited period of time (typically 30 to 90 days) and only for certain reasons such as holidays.

What countries are not ‘visa-free’ for Kiwis?
