The 5 Best Livermore Wineries to Visit | Livermore Wine Tasting

CWA Staff [May 2017]

best livermore wineries

We set out to find the five best Livermore wineries to visit. Livermore's wineries live in the large shadow cast by the world famous Napa and Sonoma wine regions. However, as a Bay Area resident, visiting Livermore makes a lot of sense. Livermore wine country is only a short drive from Silicon Valley, San Francisco or Oakland. You can reach your first winery in under 90 minutes. Despite the short trip, you will feel like you've entered a different world. Livermore offers the rural charm that the Bay Area lacks. It's a great place to catch your breath as you sample the local wine. You will also find shorter lines and less pretentious tasting rooms. And top it all off, the wine is damn good!

As the gateway to the Central Valley, Livermore, California is the easternmost city in the San Francisco Bay area. Founded in 1869, the City of Livermore is in the state’s oldest wine region. Livermore features a mild climate and plenty of open space. The environment lends itself to a relaxed and less congested lifestyle.

The city is also known for its arts, culture and western heritage. Livermore offers a unique choice of activities – sure to have the right fit for everyone who visits, but the wineries are the top attraction for us.

The best wineries in Livermore offer a wide variety of atmospheres, food pairings, tours and wine tastings.

Here are the five best Livermore wineries to visit:

Wente vineyards | 5565 tesla rd. livermore.

wente vineyards livermore

Any trip to Livermore's wine country should start at Wente Vineyards. Wente set the standard for the best Livermore wineries a long time ago. German immigrant C.H. Wente arrived in California in the 1800's. He learned the wine business from Napa pioneer Charles Krug. Then he moved to Livermore to establish his own vineyard and winery before prohibition hit California's wine industry. Fortunately for us, the winery survived through the dry times.

What started as a modest vineyard and winery has grown into a winemaking powerhouse. The winery boasts a golf course, top-notch restaurant, and multiple tasting rooms. It's a great place to host an event like a vineyard wedding.

Most importantly, Wente doesn't rely on their past success to keep wine lovers coming back. They are constantly striving to improve their winemaking and keep up with wine trends. The wine is what truly makes them one of the best Livermore wineries to visit.

When you plan your visit to Wente, make sure you look through all of your tasting options. There are public, private and guided tour options. The small lot Nth Degree wines from fifth generation winemaker Karl D. Wente are available for tasting now. These wines show off the winemaking skills that the Wente family has developed over all these years!

Bent Creek Winery |5455 Greenville Rd Livermore

livermore vineyard tour

The next winery on our list of the best Livermore wineries is a radical departure from the size and scope of Wente. Bent Creek Winery provides an intimate wine tasting experience at a great value. Nestled in the rolling hills of Livermore, Bent Creek Winery offers guests an atmosphere so serene that you feel as if you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Bent Creek was formed by four friends. They all met while working as educators in the Livermore school district. They learned then that they shared a love for wine.

Their tasting fee is $10 per person. The fee can be applied toward the purchase of a bottle of wine during your visit. For this $10 fee, you get to taste 11 different wines! Visitors rave about the depth and balance of their red wines. They also offer a variety of food pairings with some of their newly released wines. Some of the delicious food pairings include Jamaican jerk chicken, mixed mushroom soup, and flourless chocolate cake.

Note that this winery is dog-friendly.

Three Steve's Winery | 5700 Greenville Rd Livermore

This beautiful hilltop winery is one of the best Livermore wineries to visit for a few reasons. The first reason is the wine. The second reason is the knowledgeable and friendly staff. The third reason is the incredible view from the winery. This is a fun and friendly winery started by three friends named, you guessed it, Steve. They set out to make memorable wines in the Livermore wine region. The reviews are in and we think they accomplished their goal!

For a $15 tasting fee, you will receive six nice pours. Their Chilean wines are very well received, so make sure these are on your tasting list. You can take advantage of fun events like the family movie night if you are a local or happen to be in the area. You may also get to meet one of the Steves when you visit. That's the beauty of the best Livermore wineries. The wineries are typically smaller and you can ask questions about the wines directly to the people that make them!

The Steven Kent Winery | 5443 Tesla Rd Livermore

The steven kent winery livermore

Are you serious about Cabernet Sauvignon? The Steven Kent Winery may be the best Livermore winery for you. This winery isn't about bocce courts, bands, and movies. This winery is about making exceptional wine. Many visitors claim that this winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon to rival the best wineries in Napa. That is high praise for this remarkably consistent Livermore winery.

Make a reservation to taste in either the Barrel Room (a tasting of the winery's Cabs and Bordeaux blends) or in the Reserve Room (a tasting of library wines). The reserve room tasting is a more intimate seated tasting. You will receive a lot of information about the full wine portfolio at this tasting. The winery also has a nice calendar of events. Check this out to see if your tasting trip coincides with a special tasting or release party.

Murrieta’s Well | 3005 Mines Rd

This may be the most beautiful winery in Livermore. The recently renovated winery tasting room is stunning as are the grounds. Known as one of California’s original wine estates, Murrieta’s Well has been growing grapes since the 1800s. Robert Meyer, the winemaker at Murrieta’s Well, said: “The wines we create inspire people to think about where the grapes are grown.” Experience their incredible wine while sitting in their Club Lounge. The Club Lounge was created so that members could come sit in this oasis and enjoy all that their estate has to offer. Other locations on the estate for guests to relax include the tasting bar and the patio/the barrel room.

This is not an inexpensive wine tasting experience, but the small touches make it worthwhile. You can order small plates to pair with your wine here. This is a nice feature that helps you plan for future food/wine pairings at home. This winery is also a great option for events/weddings. The history, wine, and beauty of the winery make this one of the best Livermore wineries.

8 Fantastic Livermore, California Wineries To Visit

While millions of travelers head to Napa Valley each year, the wineries of Livermore, California, have remained relatively under the radar. But the word is spreading quickly that Livermore, with its 60 wineries and 96,000 acres of vineyards, is one of the best places to enjoy sunny weather and red wines like petite syrah, zinfandel, and cabernet sauvignon. The warm-to-cool climate and gravelly soil create the ideal conditions for many fantastic wines.

Livermore, California.

The Livermore Valley, 40 minutes east of San Francisco, not only produces wines on par with Napa’s, but it also offers a more relaxed approach to tastings. Most Livermore Valley wineries are laid-back family-owned spots that value friendly service. Plus, they don’t break the bank — many offers pours for a third of the price of those offered in the famed Napa region. For the most part, no appointments are necessary — you just walk in and receive the warm welcome you deserve.

Here are eight fantastic wineries to visit on a trip to Livermore.

1. Wente Vineyards

There’s no better place to start your self-guided Livermore winery tour than at Wente Vineyards . Wente provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area. It’s also one of the oldest vineyards in the region.

In 1883, the first generation of the Wente family bought 47 acres of land in Livermore to grow grapes. Since then, the winery has grown to include 2,000 acres of green vineyards, two tasting rooms, a golf course, and a restaurant.

Wente is noteworthy for being the first area winery to import chardonnay cuttings from France. The Wente family planted the vines in their vineyard and allowed the surrounding wineries to snip a few buds to bring back to their own farms. It’s estimated that the Wente clone — or genetically identical vine grown from that original — is responsible for 75 percent of all California chardonnays today.

Wente is an ideal place to spend a day or weekend at any time of year. During the summer, you can enjoy live music concerts. And when the air turns crisp, you can walk through the pop-up Christmas market.

2. Murrieta’s Well Estate Vineyard

Like Wente, Murrieta’s Well has been around since the 1880s. The founder, Louis Mel, later sold his Livermore winery to Ernest Wente. The Wente family still cares for the property today. However, Murrieta’s Well distinguishes itself not only from Wente, but also from other vineyards in the Livermore Valley.

Murrieta’s Well’s wines are made exclusively from grapes grown on the property, and the vineyard focuses on creating the perfect wine blends in small batches. The resident winemaker , Robbie Meyer, concocts creative, great-tasting combinations. When you visit, make sure to try the red blend, The Spur, and the white blend, The Whip. Reservations are required, so book your visit today , and don’t miss out on the $25 wine-tasting opportunity.

3. Concannon Vineyard

Concannon Vineyard , another old Livermore winery, has been in operation for 136 years, and a beautiful Victorian home was built on the property in 1885.

One of the largest vineyards in the area, Concannon features both indoor and outdoor tasting areas. The large lawn and gorgeous house provide the perfect backdrop for a picnic featuring one of the winery’s glasses of chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, or petite syrah.

Concannon Vineyard is best known for its cabernet sauvignon. In 1893, James Concannon traveled to Bordeaux’s Chateau Margaux after the roots of his vineyards were damaged by pests. He brought French cabernet vines back to Concannon Vineyard, and they ended up growing so well that they became internationally renowned. It’s estimated that 80 percent of all cabernet sauvignon in California comes from the original vines planted by Concannon.

4. McGrail Vineyards

A more recent addition to the Livermore winery scene, McGrail Vineyards debuted in 2008. It’s a green oasis amidst the golden rolling hills of Northern California. Instead of large-scale operations, McGrail focuses on small-batch productions.

For tasting award-winning wines, Livermore Valley is the place to be, and McGrail is no exception. The winery is best known for its cabernet sauvignon, which has won several awards . In 2019 alone, the 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon won gold, the 2014 and 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons won silver, and the 2016 Colton’s Cabernet Sauvignon won bronze in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

McGrail provides a welcoming ambiance for the whole family (including four-legged friends!), whether you go for the casual wine flight ($15), seated group tasting ($25), or 90-minute vineyard tour ($35). In addition to wine tasting , you can enjoy a round or two at the bocce ball court with a bottle or glass of your choosing ($10).

5. Retzlaff Vineyards

Retzlaff Vineyards , part of a historic estate, is a beautiful winery with a large lawn, 100-year-old pepper trees, and a garden. Retzlaff offers tours of the garden and vineyards plus a wine tasting with light snacks ($20). Otherwise, you can enjoy the cozy tasting room with a full or reserve flight of six wines ($20 to $25). The best part is that if you purchase two bottles, your wine-tasting fee is refunded. Fittingly, the tagline is, “Come for a taste, stay for a bottle!”

Established in 1985, the family-owned vineyard provides a friendly atmosphere that makes you want to visit again and again. Notably, Retzlaff Vineyards became a certified organic vineyard in 2006. This means that the vineyard doesn’t use pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers and is non-GMO. Retzlaff is best known for its 2013 and 2014 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Blends, which won bronze in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and its Estate Port made from organic cabernet sauvignon. The port won a silver medal in the Sunset International Wine Competition.

6. Darcie Kent Vineyards

Darcie Kent Vineyards is owned by a family that has been in the winemaking business for five generations; however, the Livermore location opened in 1996 . What really stands out are the winery’s vibrant wine labels that were painted by Darcie Kent herself.

The main tasting room provides a chance to enjoy Darcie Kent red blends, award-winning chardonnays, and cabernet Francs. While you’re tasting, you can admire Darcie Kent’s watercolor and acrylic depictions of the local landscape. It’s a tasting room and an art gallery in one!

For an extra-special day, sip a full-bodied wine on the sun-drenched back deck with a trained wine guide. The hour-long tasting includes five wines, plus a primer on the estate’s history and wine-tasting techniques ($30 for white and $40 for red).

7. BoaVentura Vineyards

The land BoaVentura sits upon was once a ranch owned by the Concannon family. Today, the farmhouse is the Caires family home, while the barn is used for wine tastings and events that provide visitors with a taste of life in wine country.

The 5-acre winery offers stunning views of Livermore Valley from two grass lawns, perfect for energetic pets, small children, and family picnics. To get the most out of your experience at BoaVentura, try the eight-wine tasting option for just $20. Due to the owner’s Portuguese heritage, there’s no doubt you’ll try a few wines made from grapes usually found in Portugal. Don’t leave without trying several varieties of the smooth and fruity cabernet sauvignon.

8. Cedar Mountain Winery

Just a mile down the road from BoaVentura, Cedar Mountain Winery is also a must-visit. Run by Earl and Linda Ault, Cedar Mountain started as a 20-acre farm in 1990. Their entrance into the wine market began with a cabernet sauvignon and a chardonnay. Soon after, they released a sauvignon blanc, and the rest is history!

Currently, the winery offers more than 20 wines ranging from premium and reserve to dessert wines. However, this Livermore winery is best known for its large selection of port. That’s why it’s one of the best ways to end a day of wine tasting in the Livermore Valley. Cedar Mountain Winery’s bestsellers include two ports created in 1998: Chardonnay del Sol and Viognier Port. The Viognier Port has won a silver medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Patrons have taken a liking to these two port wines, so it’s not unusual for them to be sold out from time to time.

Can’t get enough of California wine ? Make a pilgrimage to the world-renowned Napa Valley wine region . The tours shouldn’t be missed, but there are plenty of other things to do in the area.

3 Best Spots for Livermore Wine Tasting – from Trolley to Winery to Bar

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 21/12/2023

It appears that the Napa Valley got all the best marketers in California. Livermore is about the same distance southeast of San Francisco that Napa is northeast but seems to get very little press. Which is quite shocking considering how extremely good their award-winning wines are.

Livermore is an older wine region than both Napa and Sonoma, is the home to California Chardonnay and last year produced the number one in Cabernet in the United States.

livermore-wine-tasting

So Livermore Valley wine country is a genuine hidden gem – with exceptional wines waiting for you to come and taste them! So here is my guide to Livermore Wine tasting.

3 Best Livermore Wine Tasting Options

There are essentially three options when it comes to Livermore Wine Tasting. The first is, of course, to visit the Livermore Valley Wineries yourself in your own vehicle. It is also possible to cycle between each winery in Livermore but the distances between the wineries are quite considerable.

The second is the Livermore Wine Trolley. The third is to visit the First Street Wine Bar.

california_livermore_grapes

I actually did all three of these options – I know, my dedication to my blog is quite moving! So they’re not mutually exclusive and each offers a different type of experience. And here is a handy  Livermore Wineries map   to download.

⇒  If you love wine and Italy you’ll enjoy my post on 12 Great   Wineries in Montepulciano

1. Livermore Wine Trolley

The  Livermore Wine Trolley  is a guided wineries tour of the region that takes place on a motorized trolley. The wine trolley can be hired for private events, charters etc.

However, this Livermore wine tasting tour is best known for its daily tour to three local Livermore Ca wineries which also includes lunch.

california_livermore_livermore-wine-trolley-2

The three wineries change depending on which day you take the Livermore Wine Trolley. A great reason to experience the wine trolley, Livermore, a couple of times! On the day that I was on the trolley, we visited Wente Vineyards, Darcie Kent Vineyards, and Page Mill Wineries.

california_livermore_livermore-wine-trolley-inside

The main pick up for the Livermore Wine Trolley is at 11 am in downtown Livermore. The tours normally finish by about 3/330pm and end in downtown Livermore.

The Livermore Wine Trolley is a really fun way to visit the wineries of Livermore. The female driver was fantastic – really good fun and knowledgeable. We were immediately told that what happens on the trolley stays on the trolley.

There was an offer to hook up phones to the sound system. And at 11 am there was a bit of a party atmosphere on the trolley!

california_livermore_wente-winery-old-wine-barrel

Each winery Livermore visit lasts about one hour. My first stop was  Wente Vineyards . Wente is one of the most well-known wineries of Livermore as it is the home of what is known as the California chardonnay.

california_livermore_wente-vineyard-wine-tasting-room

The notion of the “butterball” California chardonnay was born at Wente with cuttings from Montpellier in France. Traces of that original Wente cutting can be found in 75% of California Chardonnays!

california_livermore_wente-vineyard-bottles-in-garden

Wente Vineyards Livermore was founded in 1883 by a German immigrant. Livermore is older than both the Napa Valley and Sonoma. The current owners – the Wente family – purchased the property and vineyards in the 1980s.

And the Wente estate has its own crooked street like in San Francisco! Wente offers seven different chardonnays.

california_livermore_wente-vineyard-wine-cave-entr

There are quite a few Wente wine tasting options. Guests to Wente can choose to take an estate, vineyard or Winemaker’s studio tasting or take a private tasting or tour with food pairing. There is a tasting fee for each.

california_livermore_wente-inside-wine-cave

Wente Vineyards has a restaurant and a grill. The Wente winery also holds lots of live music concerts with big names over the summer in their lovely and quite intimate outdoor patios.

And as if that wasn’t enough there are even wine caves that host wine tastings and/or private events. Wente is the place for Livermore winery events.

california_livermore_page-mill-winery-entrance

The second winery was Page Mill.  Page Mill winery  started in 1976 at the base of the Santa Cruz mountains and moved to the Livermore Valley in 2004. Their flagship wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Estate Petite Sirah, and GPS.

california_livermore_page-mill-winery-wine-fountain

We enjoyed our lunch at Page Mill. When I booked the tour I was asked to choose between sandwich and salad options. These were presented to us at Page Mill along with some chips to help soak up the wine!

california_livermore_page-mill-winery-barn

The third and final stop was at  Darcie Kent Vineyards .  I loved this winery as it combines great wine with art. Darcie Kent is run by an actual Darcie Kent but she is the fifth generation of this family-owned winery. In the tradition of her grandfather, she combines a love of wine with a love of art.

california_livermore_darcie-kent-winery-terrace-for-livermore-wine-tasting

All bottles at Darcie Kent Vineyards Livermore feature the art of Darcie Kent. And the tanks, sheds, and warehouses on the site are all in vibrant colours.

The Darcie Kent Vineyard tasting room is lovely – particularly the outdoor glass area. And there is a very relaxing garden at the front of the winery which is perfect for kids.

I particularly loved the Darcie Kent Chardonnay and bought a bottle of wine to take home.

california_livermore_darcie-kent-winery-outdoor-seat

Participants in the Livermore Wine Trolley also receive loads of discounts! Firstly there are discounts when you buy wine at any of the wineries visited.

Secondly, there are discounts available at several Livermore restaurants on the day of your tour (you need your tour paper bracelet to receive the discount).

california_livermore_darcie-kent-winery-coloured-tanks

There are a few other Livermore wine tasting tours. The  Livermore Food tour   features a wine flight with food. This one of the Livermore wine tours takes place in Livermore and combines a walking tour history of Livermore with visits to 4-5 Livermore restaurants.

california_livermore_darcie-kent-winery-chairs-at

The  Livermore Valley Winery Join In Group  tours run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between April and November.

Or if you’re basing yourself in San Francisco this  Sip n Shop Tour  will take you to two Livermore wineries plus the big outlet mall nearby as a day trip from San Francisco.

2. First Street Wine Company Livermore

I rather literally stumbled on the  First Street Wine Company   in Livermore. The Livermore Wine Trolley finishes in the town of Livermore. I decided that it was quite early and I should look at what other options were available for some more wine tasting.

california_livermore_first-street-wine-company-wine-tasting-menu

Heading to the main street of Livermore I immediately came across the First Street Wine Company. What a fantastic spot! It is a mix of a wine bar and a wine shop.

First Street Wine Company Livermore has been operating for nine years and they have personally tasted every wine they stock! The First Street Wine Company runs formal wine tastings as well as more informal wine flights which I decided to try.

I sat at their small bar and immediately met several locals who were also enjoying a glass of wine on a Friday afternoon (many of my food and winery tips later in the post were sourced during this drinking session!).

california_livermore_first-street-wine-company-wine-rack

I really enjoyed my visit to the First Street Wine Company for several reasons. Firstly, it is an extremely atmospheric bar/shop. It isn’t fancy but it is very comfortable and just oozes wine credibility.

Secondly, I could tell that the tastings/flights are all varied depending on what is open and mixed with recommendations. Third, I was actually hanging out with the locals. Apparently First Street Wine Company does get other tourists but it is most popular with locals.

It was terrific to meet locals who also love wine and get their tips. Finally, the wines were fantastic and I discovered and tried many delicious options.

california_livermore_first-street-wine-company

For example, the local wine brand Nipote, known for an amazing cabernet sauvignon, is only available at The First Street Wine Company. Nipote isn’t a winery – it is literally a woman just making wine with her own grapes.

This has now been bought by Steven Kent but this is the kind of local find you will experience on a visit to the First Street Wine Company Livermore.

3. Self-guided Tour of the Livermore Valley Wineries

Alas, whilst the wineries of Livermore are not terribly far away if you’re driving they are quite a distance if you wanted to walk. They are also probably a bit far for the average cyclist but it is possible to  hire e-bikes.

california_livermore_retzlaff-wine-tasting

So the best option here is to visit the wineries and spit or to convince someone else to come with and drive. Not really ideal. I visited Retzlaff Vineyards (Livermore Valley’s only certified organic vineyards on a historic property) and McGrail on my first afternoon and drove and spat.

I didn’t mind too much as I knew I was going to get an Uber that evening so I could enjoy some wine at Purple Orchid and dinner!

california_livermore_retzlaff-vineyard-sign

Of course, you could get Uber or Lyft in between wineries but that would add up.

california_livermore_retzlaff-vineyard-grapes

If you are wanting to put together a Livermore wine tasting itinerary do have a look at the  Livermore Valley Winegrowers association site  for assistance.

⇒  If you like hidden gems when it comes to wine you’ll love reading about  Charlottesville Wineries  and   Wolfville Wineries   in Nova Scotia Canada .

My favourite Livermore Wineries

There was no such thing as a bad Livermore winery based on my experience but of course, depending on what you enjoy when it comes to wine there will be preferences.

My two favourite Livermore wineries were  McGrail Vineyards  and  Darcie Kent Vineyards . McGrail Vineyards was wonderfully friendly and the winery has stunning views over Livermore Valley.

The winery itself is also very picturesque. I was driving when I visited McGrail Vineyards which was such a shame as I wanted to stay all day! -winningThe award winning McGrail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

McGrail Winery was very relaxed. I particularly loved their chardonnay and wow their reds. It was easy to understand how McGrail Vineyards won the Red Sweepstakes at the San Francisco Chronicle in 2012 for their 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – essentially saying it was the best wine in the USA that year.

california_livermore_mcgrail-vineyard-entrance-gate

At First street wine bar, I tasted Wood Family Vineyards and Cellar 13 wines. Both of these vineyards are part of the 3 Steves Winery – and I really enjoyed the wines from both of these Livermore vineyards, particularly the Chardonnay.

Some other wineries in the tri-valley’s Livermore Valley which came highly recommended but I didn’t have time to visit:

⇒  Las Positas Vineyards   – very highly recommended and apparently a lovely Meditteranean setting for wine tasting experiences

⇒   The Steven Kent Winery  – specialises in small-lot wines made from Bordeaux varietals like cabernet franc. An outstanding sauvignon blanc which I highly recommend trying.

⇒  Cedar Mountain Winery and Port Works  – very close to the Purple Orchid. In addition to a wide range of wines, they have speciality ports.

Livermore Restaurants

Most of the restaurants in the Livermore Valley are located in its two towns of Livermore and Pleasanton. Outside of the towns, many of the wineries have their own restaurants.

california_pleasanton-sabio-on-main-panzanella-salad

I had a fantastic meal in Pleasanton at  Sabio on Main .  There was a fantastic wine list – of course! This is where I tried the delicious Steven Kent Sauvignon Blanc. The chef at Sabio on Main is apparently quite well known and the food was outstanding!

california_pleasanton-sabio-on-main-cauliflower

Sabio on Main Pleasanton is famous for its chargrilled cauliflower with good reason. We started with this as one of several small plates.

It was followed by a melt in the mouth semolina gnocchi with kale, Panzanella salad with perfectly ripe tomatoes and burrata, homemade bread with chicken liver pate, pomegranate and sesame seeds and then, when we had no more room, amazing homemade doughnuts.

california_livermore_range-life-restaurant-chicken

Range Life  is a beautiful modern restaurant featuring seasonal and local ingredients in downtown Livermore. I began my meal there with a terrific eggplant dip – but the hero was this rather amazing soft, fresh Meditteranean style bread – wow!

I then moved on to chicken for my main at Range Life Livermore. Sorry, I had had a few wines by then so I can’t remember how it was described but it was delicious!

california_livermore_range-life-restaurant

I enjoyed a terrific hamburger at the  Wente Grill  for lunch. This Wente Grill was next to their golf course rather than in the main winery area (which also has a restaurant).

california_livermore_wenke-grill-burger

And I do like to pride myself on being able to sniff out good coffee – even after a couple of wines! After finishing on the Livermore Wine Trolley I had a stroll down the main street of Livermore and spotted  Panama Bay.

I had an excellent flat white and highly recommend Panama Bay Livermore for your caffeine needs whilst in the Livermore Wine valley  California .

I have mentioned a few times in this post that I met several locals. I always ask where is good to eat. I didn’t manage to make it to any of these restaurants but this is what the locals told me. If you manage to get there please do email me and tell me your views and I will add them to this post.

⇒  Rusty’s  – for burgers and steaks

⇒  Strizzi’s  – Italian – globally inspired, locally enhanced

⇒  Casa Orozco  – Mexican

⇒  Demitris  – family-owned Greek restaurant

Livermore Hotels

Livermore and the area around it don’t have much choice when it comes to boutique hotels. But luckily for me, Livermore Valley Wine Growers found me a hidden gem! The  Purple Orchid Wine Country Resort and Spa  is my kind of boutique hotel!

This Livermore boutique hotel is a modern country house with only ten rooms. It is very much like staying at someone’s lovely and relaxing home.

The Purple Orchid is run by a delightful couple, Derek and Rhiannon and is full of personal touches. I met Rhiannon a couple of times during my stay – they are very hands-on which is lovely.

california_livermore_purple-orchid-dining-area

The ground floor of this Livermore bed and breakfast has a large living room area and a lovely big dining area that has coffee, tea and water 24/7.

My favourite area was around the swimming pool. The lovely swimming pool has its own little waterfall plus loungers and tables. I had evening drinks by the swimming pool as well as breakfast outside both mornings.

california_livermore_purple-orchid-entrance

The view from the pool is just vineyards and hills. So lovely! There are also some stylish cabana areas to the side of the pool if you so desire.

Eating and Drinking at The Purple Orchid

Pre-order your breakfast the night before and let the Purple Orchid know what time you would like to eat. The breakfast menu changes on most days. I enjoyed some fantastic french toast with fresh berries and maple syrup and scrambled eggs with home roast potatoes.

When I woke up each morning I would wander down and grab a coffee and then head back to my room to get ready before heading down to breakfast. I do like a hotel where I can get coffee whenever I like!

california_livermore_purple-orchid-breakfast-by-pool-french-toas

The Purple Orchid doesn’t have a set lunch or dinner offer. If you do want to stay in for either meal just let them know ahead of time and they can work something else.

Or the other option is to get takeaway and bring it back to the hotel or use a delivery service.

california_livermore_purple-orchid-breakfast-by-pool

One of my favourite things at The Purple Orchid was the nightly wine tasting! The wineries in Livermore tend to close around 430pm.

The Purple Orchid hosts a complimentary wine tasting with cheese every night between 430 and 530pm. They even have their own wine brand – sourced locally of course! And the chardonnay was fantastic!

The Rooms at The Purple Orchid Livermore

I had a huge room at The Purple Orchid and an even bigger bed! I think it was king size plus plus! There were a lot of great things on offer in my room! The bathroom featured a big shower as well as a large tub with jets etc for a little spa experience.

california_livermore_purple-orchid-bedroom

The room itself was decorated in a Scandanavian modern style with soft grey walls and oak furniture. The side door opened up to a huge verandah shared with the rooms to the left.

There was lovely outdoor seating and nice views of the vines and the hills – plus short cut stairs down to the swimming pool.

There were two outstanding features of my room at The Purple Orchid. The first was the bathrobe. This lovely grey bathrobe was oh so comfortable and light but cozy – I absolutely wanted to steal it!

The second was the sheets. I slid into bed and thought oh my gosh – this is a comfort at a new level! And then I realised it was a bit familiar….

california_livermore_purple-orchid-bathroom

A few years ago I was in the Carribean for a friend’s birthday and had a spa treatment. The sheets on the bed for the spa treatment were just amazing – so soft and silky. I asked about the brand and was told it was  Comphy sheets .

I ordered some online and they have been my favourite pair of sheets at home for quite some time! I did actually wonder if the sheets were from Comphy. I checked with Rhiannon and she confirmed that they were! And she could order me a set through her account!

So I now have a second pair of extremely soft and silky Comphy sheets at home!

california_livermore_purple-orchid-bathrobe

If you are based in the US, hop onto their website and buy some. If you are in Europe the shipping is very expensive – especially when taxes are added.

I had Rhiannon order some and get them sent to the hotel I was going to be staying at in  Las Vegas   a few days later. The sheets pack up very tight so it was easy to get them into my luggage and avoid all the extra costs.

The Purple Orchid Spa

As if all of that wasn’t enough, The Purple Orchid North California also has a spa. It has a vast range of packages and treatments and is very popular as a Livermore day spa. They also offer spa packages for couples.

california_livermore_purple-orchid-back-view

Many of the spa packages have a food and beverage credit option so you can have some lunch and/or wine with your treatment. And best of all, the Purple Orchid spa packages are all 15% off Monday through Friday.

How to Get to Livermore

Livermore is only 36 miles west of San Francisco. The easiest way to get there is to fly into San Francisco and then hire a car. Driving to Livermore from San Francisco takes less than one hour.

It is possible to get a taxi but that will cost between USD$250-300 – but an uber will apparently only cost around USD$100.

⇒  Flights to San Francisco

⇒  San Francisco Car Hire

It is also possible to  take the BART , the San Francisco train system, to Dublin/Pleasanton and then take a bus. The bus takes about 30 minutes and buses run every 15 minutes.

Who Paid for What in this Post

The wonderful Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association was kind enough to host my trip to Livermore. This means they covered the costs for my accommodation, meals and the Livermore Wine Trolley. I covered the costs to get to Livermore including car hire.

This post contains affiliate links. That means if you click through on them and make a purchase I will receive a small commission. This will not increase the price that you are paying. I just wanted to make sure that you knew.

CHARDONNAY SELECTIONS

Chardonnay is very dear to Wente Vineyards. In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from France to the Livermore Valley. Ernest hand-picked vines that showed the best health and pronounced flavors ultimately created the ‘Wente Clone.’ Today, over 75% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone and the Wente Family property.

APPELLATION SERIES

The Appellation Series is a testament to diversity and specificity, with each wine telling the story of its unique California appellation. Through five generations of devotion and experience, our family has earned a deep understanding of these diverse terroirs and how they play a crucial role in shaping the flavors and nuance of our wines. Our team has an unwavering devotion to producing award-winning wines that showcase varietal typicity and are certified sustainable.
