jasper day trips

Just north of Banff National Park sits Jasper—a less-visited but no less beautiful national park in the Canadian Rockies. Planning a 2 to 3 days in Jasper National Park itinerary is one of the best ways to see this incredible natural area in the mountains of Alberta.

While you could spend an endless amount of time exploring the park and all the natural wonders it has to offer, spending a few days in Jasper is enough to get a feel for the park and the splendors it contains. Whether you’re looking for plenty of hikes or simply want to take in incredible lake and mountain views, visiting Jasper is never a bad idea.

How Many Days in Jasper National Park?

After a quick search to get a sense of all the things to do in Jasper, you’re probably left wondering how many days to spend in the national park to catch the highlights without overextending yourself. If you only have a few days, here’s what you can expect.

If you have 2 days in Jasper, you can catch the park’s most famous highlights. Plan to be met with crowds and spend much of your day driving, but you will see most of the landmarks that make this park spectacular.

With 3 days, you can either see the sights at your leisure or spend the extra day hiking and lounging. There are a number of comfortable mountain lakes and relaxing hot springs to spend a nice afternoon and round out your visit to Jasper.

Getting To & Around Jasper National Park

The two airports nearest Jasper National Park are Calgary International Airport and Edmonton International Airport. Calgary is about a five-hour drive away from the park while Edmonton is four hours away by car.

You can book a shuttle bus from Edmonton to Jasper, but it tends to be expensive and limits your ability to get around the park. Many visitors see Banff National Park in tandem with Jasper, so flying into Calgary and driving through Banff to Jasper makes the most sense.

Keep in mind that you will need to purchase a Park Pass in order to enter Jasper. There are a few different options available that can suit lots of different travel styles and preferences, so make sure to choose which is best for you.

That said, the best way to get around Jasper is with a car. You can rent one at whichever airport you fly into by browsing Rentalcars.com to compare prices. Alternatively, you can consider renting from Outdoorsy if you prefer an RV or campervan. This grants you the most flexibility to see the park.

You can sign up for tours such as this full-day tour but they usually won’t take you everywhere you might want to go. We highly recommend you rent a car to see through your Jasper itinerary.

2 to 3-Day Jasper Itinerary

For your itinerary to feel complete, add some of these highlights to your travel plans. You can adjust the order based on where you’re staying in the park, but the list below contains some of the park’s most impressive landmarks.

Day 1 – Jasper SkyTram, Columbia Icefields & Athabasca Glacier and Falls

Ride the jasper skytram.

Welcome yourself to Jasper by taking a ride on the Jasper SkyTram. It’s a quick way to get an early sense of everything Jasper has to offer and you can pre-book tickets here.

From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of the Rockies. You can see the town of Jasper, the Athabasca River, surrounding mountain ranges, and much more.

Take your time walking along the boardwalk with several options for viewpoints or relax in the restaurant. You can go on a short hike to the top of Whistlers Mountain. Bear in mind that the SkyTram is usually only operational from March to October, weather permitting.

Columbia Icefields

The Columbia Icefields never fail to impress their visitors. It sits along the Icefields Parkway, the highway that runs through Banff and Jasper, connecting the two parks. The icefields include several major glaciers with a few ways to get excellent views.

First, is from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center. If you want to hike to a viewpoint, consider the Toe of the Glacier trail for a close-up view of Wilcox Pass for a bird’s-eye view.

You can also stop by the Columbia Icefield Skywalk—a glass-floored lookout that gives viewers a look over Sunwapta Valley and nearby glaciers.

Icefields Parkway

Athabasca Glacier

It’s worth it to call out one glacier in particular: Athabasca Glacier. It’s one of the most-visited glaciers in North America and it’s the lowest tip of the Columbia Icefields. During peak travel seasons, Athabasca Glacier sees a lot of tourists.

You can walk right up to the base of the glacier or you can hop on a trail nearby to get away from the crowds for a broader view. During the hikes we recommended viewing the Columbia Icefields, you’ll also get good views of Athabasca Glacier.

Athabasca Falls

Athabasca Falls is located on the upper Athabasca River, just south of the town of Jasper. There are various viewing platforms and walking trails so you can experience the falls from several angles.

The waterfall was created when the Athabasca Valley Glacier receded, revealing a cavernous landscape that pushed tons of water through.

In total, the falls are about 79 feet, with several tiers of drops. By far the best time to visit is in the early spring when snowmelt sends water pummeling over the falls.

Athabasca Falls

Day 2 – Maligne Lake and Canyon, Pyramid Lake & Medicine Lake

Maligne lake and spirit island.

If you want to start your second day on a slower note, head over the Maligne Lake. This is the largest lake in the Canadian Rockies, with stunning views of forests, mountains, and the crystal clear lake all around. The drive to this lake along the Maligne Lake Road is one of the most scenic in the entire park, with incredible views and jaw-dropping overlooks to see along the way.

One of the most popular ways to explore the lake is by boat. The boat tour takes you around the lake to point out unique geographical features and the history of the area. You’ll also make a short stop at Spirit Island. You can take a walk along the short trail around the island before heading back to the boat.

The photo of Spirit Island surrounded by the lake and mountains is one of the most iconic images of Jasper.

For those after an easy and beautiful hike in the area, also consider the Moose Lake Loop, which is a family-friendly circular route. The trailhead is located close to the boat launch area, so this is something you can easily combine with a cruise on the lake.

Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake is a popular and easy stop along the route to Maligne Lake. Its smooth waters reflect the mountains and trees surrounding it. The lake is fed by glacial water, filling it with crystal clear water. Medicine Lake has earned the nickname “disappearing lake” because of an underground drainage system.

There are sinkholes at the bottom of the lake that drain the water through caves before resurfacing about ten miles downriver. It’s a natural wonder, beautiful site to behold, and an excellent spot for looking for wildlife.

The best time to spot wildlife is early in the morning or at dusk. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, bears, and moose are all common sightings throughout the park. You can also choose to go on a wildlife tour to explore with a guide.

Medicine Lake

Maligne Canyon

Here is one of Jasper National Park’s most unique features. This narrow gorge stretches more than 160 feet in some places. Its limestone walls have been carved by the powerful Maligne River. It’s a scenic area to go on a hike along the interpretive trail.

It’s a fenced path that runs along the cliffside. You’ll cross bridges that span the canyon creating excellent vantage points over the fast-flowing river below. The canyon is especially impressive during winter.

The water freezes over to cover the gorge in ice. You can take an ice walk to see it up close and personal. But the canyon is beautiful all year round.

Pyramid Lake and Island

The little island on Pyramid Lake is an unexpected favorite for many Jasper visitors. It also happens to be one of the most iconic photo ops in the entire park.

Pyramid Lake is a calm, kidney bean-shaped lake at the base of Pyramid Mountain. Its smooth waters create a mirror reflection of the surrounding landscape. This makes it a great spot to swim on a warm day or pause for an afternoon picnic.

To reach Pyramid Island, you’ll cross a narrow wooden bridge over a shallow section of the lake.

And if you haven’t had enough lakes for the day, then consider heading a little bit away from Pyramid Lake to the beautiful Lake Edith and Lake Annette, two more incredible bodies of water nestled in the Rockies.

Pyramid Lake

Day 3 – Sunwapta Falls and Valley, Cavell Meadows, Miette Hot Springs & Lac Beauvert

Sunwapta falls and valley.

You’ll see a lot of Sunwapta Valley as you’re making your way through Jasper National Park, but Sunwapta Falls is another beautiful waterfall you’ll find in Jasper. It was created by a hanging valley.

This is a place where two valleys, one deeper than the other, collided to create a sharp drop in the landscape. At Athabasca Falls, Chaba Valley and Athabasca Valley met.

You can visit Sunwapta Falls alone or head out on the trail to visit the lesser-trafficked Lower Sunwapta Falls or hike into the backcountry. Like all waterfalls in the park, the most impressive time to visit is during the spring.

Sunwapta Falls

Cavell Meadows

The hike through Cavell Meadows is a perfect mash-up of everything Jasper has to offer over a few-mile hike. Before you go, know that because it’s a hike of moderate difficulty and offers beautiful scenery, it does tend to be popular.

Try to be on the trail earlier in the day. That said, along this hike, you pass by alpine meadows, wildflowers, Angel Glacier, and Cavell Pond, with stunning views of Mt. Edith Cavell. You can expect to run into some wildlife here as well. Marmots and pikas are common.

Miette Hot Springs

What better way to conclude seeing Jasper in 3 days by relaxing in hot springs? After you’ve walked many miles and taken in all the park’s stunning beauty, head over to Fiddle Valley where you’ll find Miette Hot Springs.

These outdoor pools are located high in the hills, granting visitors exceptional views while they enjoy the warmest natural hot springs in the Rockies. The water emerges from the ground at 54°C (129°F) and is cooled to 40°C (104°F) before being funnelled into the pool.

The pools are generally open from May to October but double-check before your visit.

Road to Miette Hot Springs

Lac Beauvert

If you have time to spare on your last day in Jasper, visit Lac Beauvert. It’s convenient to reach if you’re staying in the town of Jasper as it’s located near the Jasper Park Lodge. You can explore the lake in multiple ways.

First, you have the option of hiking around the lake on the Lac Beauvert Trail. This entirely forested trail circles the lake and stretches just over two miles long. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak, paddle board, or pedal boat to see the lake and surrounding landscape from the water.

It’s quiet, serene, and relaxing. The Jasper Planetarium is also located on the lakeshore.

Have More Time?

Spend an afternoon or morning wandering around the townsite of Jasper. It was formerly a railroad hub, but Jasper is now a charming town filled with bakeries, restaurants, and cafes.

If you’re interested in taking a deeper dive into the local cuisine, you can sign up for a food tour to taste some of the highlights. You also could opt to visit nearby Patricia Lake if you haven’t had enough of gorgeous lakes on your trip.

Mount Robson is the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and just a short day trip from Jasper. Mount Robson Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers guests an exceptional visitor’s center where you can enjoy nice views of the mountain and surrounding landscape.

There are several options throughout the park to see it from the water as well. You can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle board to explore one of the lakes. Another option is taking a rafting tour on the Athabasca River, with a few exciting rapids and tons of stunning viewpoints.

Mount Robson

Warning: Please do not travel to Jasper National Park.

Wildfires have caused the closure of Jasper National Park, and the town of Jasper is currently under evacuation notice.

Please do note attempt to travel there. See 511 Alberta for updated road closure information, and Parks Canada for information about the wildfires.

A bull moose stands tall and proud, knee-deep in a misty pond, his giant antlers tangled with moss. His glassy eyes watch you – like a king watching his citizen – and you sense he’s in no hurry about anything. Serendipitous moments like these draw hikers here for some of the best hikes in Jasper National Park, Banff’s less busy northern brother.

The moment you set foot out here, life’s pace seems to slow. From the laid-back vibes of Jasper’s townsite to the glacier-fed lakes and meandering alpine trails, this 11,000-square-kilometre park gives you a chance to experience nature with fewer crowds.

Jasper townsite hikes and walks.

Some of the most beautiful hikes in Jasper are just minutes from the townsite, making it easy for all experience levels to embrace Jasper’s rugged wilderness. Keep in mind the walks in town skew toward the short and easy side of the scale and should be able to be completed in 1 – 3 hours. (The great news is you’ll have time to fit in a hike between brunch and happy hour at Jasper Brewing Company )!

There are four main hikes within the Jasper townsite, and all are considered easy.

Jasper Discovery Trail

This loop around the town is split into three sections, and the total distance is 8.3km. Be sure to follow the bear symbol on signs, and there will be markers and maps to guide your way! It can be started nearly anywhere.

Wilcox Pass Trail (Moderate-Difficult)

Wilcox Pass Trail is another banger of a hiking trail in Jasper National Park. For some odd reason, most hikers end at the red chairs or the viewpoint, and many think this is where the best of the hiking trail begins. The tourists thin out, and the trail continues to Tangle Creek and the falls. If you have the time, this hike shouldn’t be missed. Note that the access road to the trailhead closes in the winter months.

Wilcox Pass Trail information:

  • Length: 11.4 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate – Difficult
  • Elevation Gain: 414 m
  • Type: Point to point
  • Bring: Water, sunscreen, sturdy footwear, dress in layers as mountain weather is unpredictable, lunch, snacks, and a waterproof jacket.

Sulphur Skyline (Moderate)

Short and steep (ahem, we mean sweet !) perfectly describes this hike. Come prepared – both physically and mentally – and you won’t be disappointed by the stunning views at the top. From the peaks of the skyline, hardy hikers can see countless mountains spanning the great Canadian Rockies. As a bonus, the trailhead is near Miette Hot Springs – the hottest natural springs in the Canadian Rockies – offering hikers the perfect place to relax after all that hard work, as long as you’re down before it closes.

Skyline trail, jasper (hard).

The epic, 40+ km Skyline Trail is one of the most popular backpacking trails in Jasper (and one of the best hikes in Alberta ), all for a good reason: most of the hike is spent at or above the treeline. So hike among clouds and follow along three lone mountain passes while you enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. And since there are plenty of campsites along the hiking trail, you’ll have no shortage of spots to rest and replenish your energy.

Be sure to book your campsite ahead of time , or call 1-877-RESERVE (1-877-737-3783) to reserve a spot.

Backpacking on Rampart mountains in Jasper, Alberta

Tonquin Valley (Hard)

Starting from either the Portal or Astoria Trailhead, the Tonquin Valley hike offers amazing scenery and a great chance to see some wildlife – including bears and endangered Woodland Elk. While hikers can park at one trailhead and start from the other for the complete experience, it requires some ingenuity or budgeting for a $100 taxi ride from one trailhead to the other. An out-and-back option is available for those who don’t want to pay.

Whether you choose point-to-point or out and back, the highlight of the trip is Amethyst Lake, with its glorious view of the Ramparts – a jagged stretch of rugged mountains that are absolutely breathtaking.

Be sure to book a campsite early or at one of three accommodations:

  • The Tonquin Valley Backcountry Lodge
  • The Tonquin Valley Adventure Lodge
  • Alpine Club of Canada’s Wates-Gibson Hut

Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park (Hard)

We’re cheating just a bit on this one – but this hike is worth it. The trailhead for Berg Lake (and the lake itself) is in Robson Provincial Park, Jasper’s little British Columbian brother. But since this multi-day trail is only an hour outside of Jasper, and Berg Lake itself is only a couple of kilometres from the Alberta/Jasper border, we figured the beautiful scenery, the glacier-fed lake (complete with icebergs), the majestic, heart-pounding Emperor Falls, and a view of the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies – earned the hike a place on the list!

There are tons of day hikes within the Berg Lake Trail hike too, and you can spend as much time on this hike as your food supply and energy level will allow.

Berg Lake Trail information:

  • Length: 42 km
  • Time: 1 – 4 days
  • Elevation Gain: 1,083 m
  • Trailhead location: Here , a short drive to the Mount Robson Visitor Centre .
  • Season: Year-round, with no services or fees before May 15 or after Thanksgiving Day.

FAQs about Jasper National Park

What is the best time of year to visit jasper national park.

While summer is considered the best time of year to visit Jasper National Park is beautiful year-round. Winter is a great time to visit for a colder and quieter visit with lots of fun winter activities like snowboarding and skating.

How Many Days Do You Need in Jasper National Park?

For a first-time visit, you should spend at least 3 days in Jasper National Park. While people tend to spend more time in Banff and Lake Louise, it’s hard to just spend a day in Jasper. I found three days to be a good introduction to this beautiful national park.

48 Hours in Jasper: The Ultimate Itinerary

Closure Alert: Due to summer wildfires, several Pursuit attractions and hotels in Jasper National Park are currently closed . For more information, please visit the Pursuit Jasper Wildfire information page .

While the town of Jasper may be modest, this northerly Alberta mountain community has a big reputation. Nestled in the heart of one of Canada’s most beautiful national parks, with a population of 4,500 people, it's a year-round base for endless recreation possibilities. In summer, you can get it all in even in a short visit.

With so much to take in, it pays to plan ahead! Jasper National Park in itself is a massive area—10,878 square kilometres to be exact. Visits here are often one part of a larger trip that includes other stops. You’ll want to avoid any unnecessary backtracking—particularly if you’re on a short time frame.

Here is our suggested itinerary for 48 hours in Jasper, starting from Edmonton and heading to the Icefields Parkway (and it could easily be reversed if your trip is connected with Banff National Park ).

Day 1: Getting There is Half the Fun

From Edmonton, the journey to Jasper is just over four hours following along the beautiful Athabasca River. En route to the town of Jasper itself, keep your eyes out for wildlife, especially once you are past the small town of Hinton. If you see wildlife, remember to stay in your vehicle and keep a distance. See our tips on responsible wildlife viewing .

A woman relaxes in a hot springs pool below mountains

A quick bite at Authentic Burger will set the perfect mood for a casual, relaxed meal with quality pints and plates—a tried and true local favourite for years.

Day 2: Explore Jasper’s Natural Waters

You’ll want to get up early to enjoy one of Jasper National Park’s most breathtaking beauties—Maligne Lake. Head out of town by 7:30 AM and stop for a quick bite to eat at the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Lodge  en route. The Maligne Lake  Premium Cruise  begins their first tour at 9:30 AM, and it’s during this morning calm that you can best appreciate the scenery. Discover Spirit Island (accessible only by boat) and enjoy some of the most beautiful vistas in the Rockies.

A boat glides along a mountain lake under light mist

After lunch at the historic Maligne Lake Chalet , head back towards town. Hit up the local artisan shops, take a browse at the  Jasper Artist’s Guild  and refuel for your afternoon adventures at Jasper Pizza Place, a local pizzeria independently owned since the '70s. Grab some basics for breakfast the next morning - you've got another early start!

Enticed by the glacially-fed waters you explored earlier? Find out if you’re brave enough to test them for yourself at Horseshoe Lake. You can even try your hand at cliff-jumping into the icy crystal blue depths. But be careful—some of the highest cliffs are 80 feet tall!

To celebrate your last night in town, make your dinner reservation at  Evil Dave’s Grill . Eclectic and delectable, the meals here are just as sure to intrigue as to satiate.

Day 3: Elevate your Rockies Discovery

With Jasper being quite far north, there are extra-long summer daylight hours to enjoy. Grab your picnic supplies and get out of town by 7 AM. Hiking Mt. Edith Cavell for sunrise will create a memory to last a lifetime. Although the hike can take up to 5.5 hours, an early start means there’s no time pressure. You can truly relax, smell the wildflowers and enjoy yourself!

Two women hike in a rocky alpine bowl.

Many travellers combine a visit to Jasper with a following trip to Banff National Park. Luckily, one of the most scenic drives in the world, the Icefields Parkway, spans both national parks and is the main route connecting Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise.

There are plenty of sights worth stopping for along this journey, the most impressive being the Columbia Icefield. Here, you can experience the  Columbia Icefield Adventure and Skywalk —two unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. An Ice Explorer will bring you to the top of a 10,000-year-old icefield sheet, where you can then stand over a thousand feet of glacial ice for yourself. Then, test your fears on a glass-pathed lookout, as the Sunwapta Valley sweeps out from beneath your feet.

A family poses for a photo on an icefield

From here, continue south towards Banff and Lake Louise, or drive north and then east back to Edmonton via Jasper. Either way, your drive will be full of more scenery and time to reflect on the memories you've gathered during your 3-day adventure!

Planning a trip to Jasper: things to know

Is jasper worth visiting.

The answer is yes, absolutely 100% yes! Located in the spectacular Canadian Rockies , this mountain town has the air of a small town village where everyone knows their neighbors.

Besides the laid-back vibe, Jasper also boasts stunning panoramic views of the Athabasca River Valley and is an action-packed mountain town.

For most people visiting Canada, Jasper town and the surrounding National Park are very high on the list of must-see locations.

There are so many great places to visit in Jasper, you don’t want to miss out on anything! So keep reading for insider Jasper travel advice as a former resident shares which Jasper attractions are not to be missed…

Is Banff or Jasper nicer?

I personally feel there's no right answer to this question as both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park have so much to offer. In the end, it really depends on what you're looking for.

Banff has a more vibrant nightlife and plenty of restaurants, while Jasper is known for its incredible wildlife sightings and serene mountain hikes.

If you're looking to relax, Jasper is the perfect spot. But if you're looking for adventure and entertainment, Banff is the place to go. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide which one is nicer!

There is no single best time to visit Jasper, Jasper is a great year-round destination! Each season offers something special and different Jasper activities can be enjoyed each month.

Visit Jasper in winter (December-February)

For those brave enough to brace for the cold, the Jasper winter season (December-February) is awesome. Skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed at Marmot Basin.

Visit Jasper in spring (March-May)

This is a beautiful time of the year to visit, with lots of wildflowers and waterfalls at their most impressive, fed by the melting snow.

Please note bears are coming out of hibernation in spring, so take appropriate precautions.

Visit Jasper in summer (June-August)

Summer (June-August) is the peak season in Jasper, resulting in higher accommodation prices and bigger crowds (especially in July and August).

This season is great for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing.

Visit Jasper in autumn (September-November)

When visiting Jasper in autumn (September-November), you can see the colorful leaves, visit the Jasper Dark Sky Festival  and enjoy the National Park without the crowds!

Many of the best hikes in Jasper are still accessible, especially from September until mid-October.

Best places to visit during a trip to Jasper

Day 1: old fort point and the valley of the five lakes.

You will be doing not one but two hikes today, so before heading out to the gorgeous Jasper National Park attractions let's find a nice place for breakfast.

Bears Paw Bakery or the Other Paw Bakery

You know a café is good when there are two locations in the SAME town!

Yep, both Bears Paw Bakeries are within walking distance of each other so you have two options to choose from, depending on which end of town you’re at when hunger strikes.

Renowned for their specialty cakes, you’ll sometimes be able to see cake ideas come to life for someone’s special occasion.

Sit in and warm your bones with homemade soup and a sandwich, or get something to take out with you as you hit the trails. Whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed.

And if you want your mind and tastebuds blown, sink your teeth into one of their mouthwatering white chocolate and raspberry scones!

Hike to Old Fort Point

Old Fort Point Jasper Alberta Canada

Once you are good to go, it's time for your first Jasper hike! It's only a 4km loop to the top but this hike is fairly steep and ascends 130 meters.

This is a classic Jasper trail that will reward you with sweeping panoramic views from the top.

The trail can be reached via Jasper Park Lodge or Jasper townsite and is connected to several other hikes in the area.

At the base of the trail, you’ll find a set of wooden steps that will guide you up toward a path on the mountain.

Along the way, you can enjoy great views of the Athabasca River, where during the summer months you might just happen to see some adventurous raft boats coming down the river .

Continue up along the ridge, which will be easy enough to figure out as this is a well-defined and popular trail. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the adventurous little goats who roam up there!

Once you reach the top you have two options for coming back down, back the way you came or continue the loop (I recommend continuing the loop).

Old Fort Point Jasper Canada

Follow the Valley of the Five Lakes circuit trail

A 4.5km circuit around some of the most beautiful lakes Jasper has to offer.

Less than 9 kilometers from the center of Jasper (along the Icefields Parkway) you’ll find the marked parking lot and signage towards the trailhead.

This set of trails is relatively flat, but there is a little elevation gain at the midway count and a few rocky patches that can be slippery when wet, so be sure to keep that in mind.

Lakes 1-3 are gorgeous, but the highlights are the last two lakes in the loop. The five lakes vary in shades of blues and greens, each is colored this way because of glacial rock dust that settled in the water in addition to a special kind of algae.

Valley of the 5 Lakes Jasper National Park Canada

The weather will affect the colors too, so during each visit, the lakes look a little different. If you only have time to do one hike in Jasper, make it this one!

These unique Canadian natural wonders are easily accessible and it takes less than two hours to do this loop.

Insider advice: if you have extra time you can combine the Valley of the Five Lakes hike and the Old Fort Point Loop, a good option for those looking for something a bit more intense.

Dine at The Raven Bistro

Boasting a creative menu of Mediterranean fusion flare, the Raven Bistro will create a meal for you that makes you feel like you’re looking out towards the Mediterranean instead of the mountains (both are great options if you ask me).

With seafood, provincially sourced beef, vegan and vegetarian options, and a great wine list, there’s not much the team in the kitchen won’t do for you to ensure you'll have a memorable evening.

If you fancy a lighter option, they have a lunch menu to choose from as well.

Day 2: Jasper Tramway and Pyramid Lake

Ready for another awesome day filled with Jasper's must-see sights? Good!

If you are still a bit tired from your hikes yesterday, sleep in and head to the wonderful Patricia Street Deli for a late breakfast (opens at 10 am).

Patricia Street Deli

Tucked off the street behind a few shops, you could easily miss Patricia Street Deli , a cute little shop if you don't know where to look. For those in the know, you are in for a treat.

The owners, Glen & Wendy (and the staff), will make you the best dang sandwich you’ve ever had!

Homemade sauces and chutneys, locally sourced meats and cheese, and a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options to satisfy everyone’s craving in the group.

I haven’t lived in Jasper in almost nine years now and I still get cravings for homemade garlic mayo and roasted chicken!

Jasper Tramway

View from top of Jasper Tramway

With a full tummy, it's time to head out again! If you want to snag some great views without sweat, then hop aboard the Jasper Tram!

If you're feeling courageous enough (or want to burn off those Patricia Street Deli calories), you can hike to the top of the impressive Whistlers Peak (2470m). The higher you get, the better the views.

The highest and longest aerial tram in Canada will take you high above the clouds, giving you spectacular views of the Jasper townsite.

There is a cafe/restaurant on-site and if you visit during the winter months, snowshoeing is a cool option as well!

Buy your tickets online in advance to skip the queue .

Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake in summer Jasper National Park

In the afternoon, head to Pyramid Lake. Lying at the foot of one of my favorite Jasper mountains, Pyramid Lake is not only a gorgeous bit of scenery but a fantastic spot for lots of activities too.

If you’re so lucky to stay at the beautiful Pyramid Lake Resort , you’ll wake up to views of the mountain and lake daily.

Don't fret if you haven't managed to book yourself one of the much-coveted rooms, you can admire the wonderful views nonetheless!

Pyramid Lake is about 7 kilometers from town, cycling there is a good option if you don't have a vehicle.

There are several different trail options, and if you're well-equipped you can even climb Pyramid Mountain (standing 2766 meters tall).

At the lake there are boat rentals, as well as canoes and kayaks for hire, giving visitors a different perspective of the surrounding area.

Click here to book a 3-hour private canoe adventure on Pyramid Lake !

Be mindful of wildlife such as bighorn sheep and elks. In the summer months, weddings are often taking place near the wooden walkway.

Evil Dave’s Grill

In the evening, head to Evil Dave's Grill . Since 2007 this restaurant has been pumping out fantastic food with a flare in a great atmosphere.

The owners, Mike and Cyndi, have created a menu that will leave you coming back for more.

From the malevolent meatloaf to the Cowboy sushi, Evil Diva Salad, and a range of wickedly delicious cocktails, there is nothing on this menu that I wouldn’t recommend.

Day 3: Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake, and Maligne Lake

Maligne canyon.

Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park

Maligne Canyon is the deepest canyon in Jasper and can be explored in both the summer and winter months.

During winter, strap some grips to your boots and hike down into the ice-covered canyon where you’ll be able to hear the water rushing behind the frozen falls. This is one of the most popular Jasper winter activities!

If you don’t have the gear, don’t sweat it! Jasper has multiple excellent tour companies that will fit you with the equipment necessary and even drive you out there to experience the winter wonderland.

In the snowless months, you’ll find the ice replaced with rushing turquoise waters and some pretty impressive spray!

Well-marked paths guide you around this area, and there are fences put in place to keep people from getting into any unsafe situations.

The canyon itself measures 50 meters deep and, depending on the season, always looks different and never ceases to amaze.

Click here to book an epic ice-walk tour in Maligne Canyon

Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake Jasper National Park Canada

Medicine Lake is a 7-kilometer-long lake found along Maligne Lake Road (Range Road 260A).

While most people quickly pass by this lake on their way to the famous Maligne Lake, it's worth stopping and learning more about fascinating Medicine Lake.

What makes this lake so special is the fact that it's disappearing each fall! Medicine Lake is fed by melting water and each spring and summer the lake is continuously fed by water flowing down from the surrounding mountains.

In fall, however, the flow of melting water decreases to such an extent that the outflow of water is higher than the inflow.

While this is true for many lakes, what makes Medicine Lake unique is that there isn't a river flowing out of the lake. Instead, water from the lake disappears into the vast cave system found on the northwest side of the lake.

This cave system is one of the largest in the world which earned Medicine Lake a spot on the list of protected natural areas.

Insider advice: go to the boating area instead of the pullout. It's much quieter and there is a toilet there.

Medicine Lake is a beautiful picnic spot, just be sure to take all your trash with you and watch for wildlife. Moose, mountain goats, bears, elks, and eagles can all be seen at Medicine Lake.

Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake Jasper National Park

For anyone wondering: is Maligne Lake worth the drive? Yes, absolutely! The scenic Maligne Lake road is already a great adventure, but Maligne Lake will surely take your breath away.

This famous lake is a great place to spend an afternoon, or even a full day if you have time and the weather is nice.

There are several hiking trails, ranging from an easy stroll (the 3.2km Mary Schäffer Loop) to the strenuous multiday Skyline Trail (44km).

Other popular activities at Maligne Lake include fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.

During summer there are boat trips to Spirit Island, one of the most photographed spots in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Insider advice: for those who love to venture off the beaten track, there are three backcountry campsites at Maligne Lake which can only be accessed by canoe!

During the winter months, you can go snowshoeing, or simply enjoy the stunning view of the frozen lake.

Day 4: the Sulphur Skyline trail and Miette Hot Springs

Head to your favorite breakfast spot, or grab a quick cup of coffee and some Timbits from Tim Horton before starting another awesome day exploring the best Jasper tourist attractions.

Sulphur Skyline Trail

Sulphur Skyline Jasper Alberta

Yes, another hike! What's more, this hike is not for the faint of heart as the elevation gain is quite high and roundtrip can take between 4 to 6 hours.

That being said, the sweeping views are worth it when you make it to the top!

Be sure to bring lots of food and water and dress in layers , the weather can change quite quickly as you’re on your way up, even in summer I experienced snow when I did the trek!

Miette Hot Springs

What makes the Sulphur Skyline Trail even better is the fact that Canada’s hottest hot springs, Miette Hot Springs, lie at the base.

Treat your tired and aching bones with a soak in the hot pools while continuing to take in the fantastic views.

What to see in Jasper if you have more time available

Annette Lake Jasper Alberta

If you find yourself in the position of being able to spend more time in Jasper, lucky you! There are plenty of other places to see in Jasper.

Some of my favorites are Edith and Annette Lake, Mount Edith Cavell, and Athabasca Falls.

Edith and Annette Lake

As one of the few swimmable lakes (though only barely, water temperatures are approximately 18°C in summer) these lakes are especially popular with families and a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon.

Mount Edith Cavell

This spectacular mountain requires a 14-kilometer drive along Cavell Road, a twisting and turning road with equally spectacular views.

From the parking lot, the short Path of the Glacier trail leads to the north face of Mt. Edith Cavell and offers beautiful views of the mountain, Cavell Pond, Cavell Glacier, and the Angel Glacier.

Athabasca Falls

These powerful waterfalls are one of the most famous falls in Jasper National Park.

Not because of their height, but because of the huge amount of water pressed through the gorge, creating potholes as the softer limestone rock slowly gives away under the pressure of the thundering water.

If you're looking to visit another impressive waterfall, the Sunwapta Falls are only a 15-minute drive from the Athabasca Falls.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the worthwhile Jasper National Park activities, but I'm confident that by following this Jasper travel itinerary you will have an amazing Jasper vacation.

How to get to Jasper

Travel to jasper by car.

Icefield Parkway in winter

Most visitors coming in or leaving Jasper National park do so via the world-renowned Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93.

This amazing scenic route leads drivers (and even brave cyclists) from Jasper to Banff National Park , with countless amazing stops along the way.

How far is Jasper from Banff? The distance from Jasper to Banff is 287 kilometers (178 miles). While it's possible to drive from one town to the other in approximately 3-4 hours, I recommend spending at least several days exploring the Icefield Parkway and the many stunning sights between Banff and Jasper. This is one of the most scenic drives in the world so take your time if you can!

You can book an excellent tour that will take you out onto the Athabasca Glacier in a massive ice-crossing truck.

Stop at the Saskatchewan crossing, make a beeline for Lake Louise no matter the weather, go boating at Bow Lake, and admire the countless waterfalls calling your name.

Even if you are pressed for time and don’t stop along the way, the scenery along the Icefields Parkway will impress you at every turn.

Travel to Jasper by train

It's possible to travel to Jasper by train from Vancouver with the VIA Rail overnight train, the trip takes 18 hours.

Keep in mind this isn't a cheap option, but the trip itself is an activity with stunning views along the way.

Alternatively, you can also travel to Jasper by train from Edmonton , which is a much cheaper and also faster option (6h30m).

Travel to Jasper by bus

Jasper can be reached by bus as well. Popular routes are Calgary – Jasper (7h20m) and Edmonton – Jasper (5h15m).

How to get around Jasper National Park

Camping in the Canadian Rocky Mountains

I strongly recommend renting a car  or  campervan , having your own wheels is the easiest way to explore the most beautiful sites Jasper National Park has to offer.

Many of the things to do around Jasper mentioned in this itinerary cannot be reached unless you have a car. While there are shuttle buses, for example to Maligne Lake, these don't stop along the way.

One of my favorite parts of travel is to be able to pull over at a pretty spot and brew some tea or coffee while admiring the view. That's why I love traveling around Canada with a campervan so much!

If you don't have your own transportation, joining a (multi-day) Canadian Rocky Mountain tour is an excellent way to see both Banff and Jasper and the surrounding National Parks.

Jasper what to do: in conclusion

Whether you're arriving at Jasper National Park by plane, train, or automobile you’ll be gifted with some of the most pristine views that Canada and the Rocky Mountains have to offer.

There are hundreds of places to see, and just as many things to do but given that most visits go by far too quickly I hope that I’ve shared just enough to fill your Jasper holiday with incredible food, amazing scenery and so much more!

‘Never be forgotten’: Calgary firefighter dies on duty in Jasper National Park

By Alejandro Melgar

Posted Aug 4, 2024 7:29 am.

Last Updated Aug 5, 2024 9:39 am.

Firefighters in mourning lined the road in Hinton on Sunday morning to honour the fallen Calgary firefighter who died while on duty in Jasper National Park.

The fire personnel stood side by side with other first responders and members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been assisting fire crews battle the flames.

They paid tribute to the 24-year-old Alberta Wildfire firefighter who was working on the out-of-control Jasper wildfire complex Saturday around 2 p.m. when he was fatally struck by a tree.

“Today we are mourning the loss of one of our own,” Alberta Wildfire wrote in a social media post. “An Alberta Wildfire crew member was fatally injured yesterday while responding to the wildfire in Jasper. This morning we stood heartbroken with our partners as a procession passed by.”

“Today’s a difficult day for firefighters,” added Alberta Wildfire information unit manager Christie Tucker at Sunday’s wildfire update. “Even though we know that wildland firefighting is a job that includes a lot of dangers, and we try to prepare for any circumstances. It doesn’t lessen the impact when we lose one of our own.”

Alberta Wildfire says crew members provided immediate first aid and activated the medical response plan.

A wheeled stretcher was used to lift the man to the nearest helipad and was then flown by STARS helicopter to the hospital. He was declared dead after his transfer. There were no other reported injuries.

“I’d like to acknowledge the quick response of his crewmates, Jasper National Park’s visitor safety specialist, and STARS air ambulance in providing first aid and rescue services. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful yesterday,” Tucker said.

Watch: One Calgarian has died while fighting the Jasper Wildfire

Joe Zatylny with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency said “while we know firefighting comes with tremendous risk, a loss like this is unexpected and extremely difficult.”

The Calgary’s man identity has not been made public yet, though RCMP said he was based out of the Rocky Mountain House Fire Base, about 200 kilometres north of Calgary.

“I know people want to know more about the firefighter and the circumstances. We are working with the family on the release of any further details out of respect for their privacy at this difficult time,” said Alberta Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen.

Loewen added the family will be eligible for mental-health support and the Alberta Heroes’ Fund “in the coming months.”

“As a father, grandfather, the loss of a young firefighter is hard to bear,” the minister said. “I know that I speak unanimously for my caucus colleagues and sending heartfelt sympathies to this courageous young man’s family and friends. I want to recognize his unwavering commitment to protecting our communities. This will never be forgotten.”

Police said Occupational Health and Safety will investigate the man’s death.

“This incident highlights the dangerous nature of wildland firefighting and the hazards that crew members encounter every day,” Parks Canada said in a statement.

“Every single person responding to the Jasper Wildfire Complex is in mourning today for our friend and colleague. The wildland fire community is small and every loss deeply impacts us all.”

Minister of Emergency Services Mike Ellis shared on X that the bus tour viewings set for Sunday have been delayed “out of respect for the family, crew and all those impacted by this tragedy” for 24 hours.

“The residents that had signed up for the tours were notified last night, and we will continue to communicate with them directly to keep them informed,” he said.

“We are working to ensure supports are available for all those working in Jasper during this incredibly difficult time.”

Zatylny specified the bus tours would likely have been cancelled anyway at some point on Sunday due to fire conditions.

Many expressed sadness at the firefighter’s death and offered condolences to his family and friends.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she was “forever grateful for the courageous wildland firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect others.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on X he was “heartbroken” by the news, adding the 24-year-old served Albertans with “unwavering bravery.”

“I’m keeping his family, friends, and his fellow firefighters in my thoughts,” his post reads.

Guy Smith, president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), said the loss has left union members “shocked and saddened,” and that their thoughts are with his family and friends.

“The tragic loss of one of our members while fighting the Jasper forest fire is hard to bear. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” Smith said in a release.

“We are also thinking of his crew members and other wildland firefighters who continue to put their lives on the line fighting this and other forest fires.”

“RCMP wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of the deceased,” Mounties added.

Two firefighters died fighting wildfires in B.C. and North West Territories in the summer of 2023, along with helicopter pilot Ryan Goulding in Alberta who died after he collided with terrain while bucketing.

Parks Canada reported Saturday that the fire in the park was still burning out of control. Dean MacDonald, deputy incident commander with Parks Canada, said the wildfire was estimated to be around 32,000 hectares.

Are portable heart monitors worth it? I bought this $99 one for my senior parents

Here's why an expert calls it a 'great tool for early detection''

'It's worth the trip': Bryan Cranston urges travellers to visit Jasper when it recovers from 'devastating' wildfire

The "breaking bad" actor reflected on a recent trip he took to the canadian rockies, reminiscing about the "beautiful scenery.".

Jasper is getting some love from a well-known actor. On Wednesday, "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston took to Instagram to reflect on a recent trip he took to the Canadian Rockies with wife Robin Dearden as part of their 35th anniversary. The couple travelled on the Rocky Mountaineer , saying they were "snaking through" the mountains to get to the alpine town in Alberta.

While Jasper National Park and its townsite currently faces blazes that could continue into the fall, Cranston topped off his post's caption with a note explaining their trip was right before the wildfire hit the area. "When the area recovers, they will be in great need to get up and running again and welcome tourists back to this glorious part of the world. It's worth the trip," the 68-year-old "Better Call Saul" actor wrote .

Cranston's post included several photos from his and Dearden's trip, including snapshots of them riding the train, some of the food they ate, views of the mountainous region, photos of them at their log cabin and posing by Maligne Lake.

"In Jasper, we arrived in perfect weather," Cranston reminisced . "They were expecting us at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and we had a beautiful log cabin to settle in for a couple days.

"They're not immune to forest fires and had a really bad one a few years ago. We're told this one was started by carelessness. A shame."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bryan Cranston (@bryancranston)

Wrapping up his post, Cranston explained some of the things they ate, including a "very tasty and tender" bison steak, and that they caught eye of a mother bear and her cubs while leaving the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. "Tomorrow it's on to Lake Louise. See you then," he capped off his post.

In the comments section, several Canadians expressed their happiness over Cranston visiting up north. Other fans also matched the actor's comedic energy.

"We loved helping you celebrate your anniversary! We thought you looked familiar," the official Rocky Mountaineer Instagram account posted .

"Thank you for showing love to Jasper and what has happened," someone added .

"This is one of the trains I've wanted to take! The Ocean, then The Canadian, then Rocky Mountaineer," someone else shared .

"So happy you're enjoying our beautiful country! Keep moving east!!" one person quipped .

This isn't the first time Cranston has shown love to Western Canada. In late July, he took to social media with another post , letting fans know the area is "absolutely stunning" and that he'd be documenting his and his wife's journey on their wedding anniversary trip.

"From the metropolitan setting of the vibrant Vancouver, to the Wild West town of Calgary, and all the magnificent scenery of the Canadian National Parks in between. Come along for a little arm-chair traveling with my wife, Robin and I, as I document our journey over the next few days to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary," he wrote in his July 24 post .

However, their trip didn't seem to start according to plan. Their flight from Los Angeles to Vancouver was delayed by more than eight hours, Cranston wrote, noting they decided to grab the next one out to Seattle. There, they stayed overnight at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, exploring some of the city's sights like the Pike Place Market and the original Starbucks location.

"We took a sea plane the next morning to the Canadian city. What fun that is," he continued . "While at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver, the staff placed a bottle of champagne and a personalized chocolate treat for when we arrived in the beautiful room. ... Tomorrow, it's on to Jasper by train."

The Perfect Itinerary for 2 Days in Lake Tahoe in the Summer

Your detailed Lake Tahoe itinerary for a summer weekend in the Sierras, including the best things to do, places to eat, and where to stay.

Lake Tahoe Summer Itinerary

summer in Lake Tahoe 2 day itinerary

Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular places to visit in California and a favorite weekend getaway from San Francisco . And it’s easy to see why with the amount of natural beauty to be found in the area and the year-round attractions for families, couples, and adventurous travelers around the lake.

Nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe straddles the California and Nevada state line. Since gambling is legal in Nevada, numerous casinos have popped up on the Nevada side of the lake for those who are looking to test their luck. But gambling isn’t the only thing that makes Lake Tahoe such an attractive destination to visit in California.

From snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, gondolas, and cozy cabins in the winter, to hiking, water sports, lazy beach days, and hot weather in the summer, there’s a lot to love about Lake Tahoe – no matter the season.

When people say Lake Tahoe, they’re usually referring to South Lake Tahoe. The lake is huge (72 miles) and takes three hours to drive around, so visitors tend to base themselves in South or North Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe is by far the most popular area of the lake to visit and has a lot of attractions, beaches, and hikes to enjoy, so I always recommend starting there if it’s your first time in Lake Tahoe.

For that reason, this 2-day itinerary focuses on how to spend a summer weekend in South Lake Tahoe to soak up the best scenery and attractions in the area.

Let’s dive in!

Travel Tips for Lake Tahoe

  • Book accommodation early and expect it to be busy – Summer is Lake Tahoe’s high season so expect it to be fairly busy. In the summer, there’s usually some traffic to and from Lake Tahoe. It’s also good to book accommodation far in advance. If you can visit Lake Tahoe during the week instead of the weekend, even better. If you go on the weekend and you’re coming from San Francisco, try to leave before noon on Friday from the Bay Area.
  • Bring layers and a warm jacket – Even during the summer when the weather is hot during the day, nights are often cool. Make sure to bring a jacket to bundle up once the sun goes down. It’s also good to bring at least one pair of warmer shoes besides flip flops that can be used for activities and easy hikes around the lake ( I’m personally a fan of Allbirds ).
  • Drink plenty of water – At over 6,200 feet, the higher elevation of South Lake Tahoe means that dehydration is common. Drink more water than you normally would and bring extra water with you if you plan to go hiking.
  • Protect yourself from the sun – It’s easier to get sunburned at higher altitudes, so lather on plenty of sunscreen, bring a hat, sunglasses, and some aloe vera just in case (especially if you tend to sunburn easily like me).
  • Plan how you want to get around – If you’re staying near downtown South Lake Tahoe, it’s a fairly walkable area that can easily be explored by your own two feet. If you want to explore outside the downtown area though, it’s best to have your own car. There is public transport in Lake Tahoe but it’s not the fastest or most convenient way to get around. It also won’t take you to the more off-the-beaten-path trailheads and beaches. There are both Lyfts and Ubers in South Lake Tahoe too, which are ideal to use after a night at the casinos or bars.
  • Check conditions ahead of time for the possibility of forest fires – In the summer, it’s not uncommon for forest fires to happen near Lake Tahoe. Check conditions and air quality ahead of time before you head up to the lake.

A 2-Day Itinerary for Lake Tahoe in the Summer

Lake tahoe itinerary: day 1.

Eagle Falls South Lake Tahoe in the summer

The hike starts near Emerald Bay, from the parking area on the west side of Highway 89. It’s only around 2.5 miles roundtrip but full of generous views and plenty of local flora and fauna to make it a worthwhile hike. Since this is one of the most popular hikes in Lake Tahoe it’s recommended to get to the parking lot before 9am as it fills up quickly.

Also, this hike goes into the backcountry of the Lake Tahoe area, called Desolation Wilderness. Because of this, you’ll need to pick up a permit (which you can do on the trail) as soon as you reach the backcountry portion of the trail.

Kayak or SUP to Fannette Island

Fannette Island in Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe in summer activities

This is the only island in Lake Tahoe and it’s close enough to the shore to paddle to either via kayak or a standup paddleboard (depending on your preference). You can rent kayaks or standup paddleboards near Vikingsholm and paddle out directly from the rental location.

Emerald Bay State Park is one of the most scenic state parks around Lake Tahoe, so make sure to give yourself time to soak up the views on the way to the island. Once you get to the island, hike to the top of the hill to find an abandoned tea house at the top and stunning 360-degree views of the bay, before heading back towards Vikingsholm.

Visit Vikingsholm

After you drop off your kayak, sign up for a tour of Vikingsholm . This 38-room Viking-inspired castle is nestled in the dramatic scenery of Emerald Bay State Park. It’s a quirky sight to visit next to the bay and features one of the best examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States.

The castle was built in 1929 and commissioned by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight, who drew similarities between Lake Tahoe and the fjords of Scandinavia. It became the summer home for Mrs. Knight and her family for 15 years until her death. And if you’re visiting in the summer, you can take a tour of the property.

D L Bliss State Park in South Lake Tahoe vacation

If you have the energy to squeeze in one more short hike, head to D.L. Bliss State Park , on the west side of the lake. This beautiful park is the perfect place to further explore the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe and get some fresh air and exercise in the afternoon.

There are numerous trails you can tackle at D.L. Bliss State Park, but I’d recommend doing the Rubicon Lighthouse Trail. This easy 1.5-mile trail takes you up 250 feet in elevation to the historic Rubicon Lighthouse that was built in 1919. Along the way, you’ll get stunning bay views that peak out from green forests. Most of the trail is shaded and it’s easy to do within an hour.

Explore Heavenly Village and Ride the Gondola

Head into Heavenly Village for an afternoon of shopping, eating, and gondola riding. With over 40 shops featuring international and local brands, there are a lot of boutiques to poke your head into.

And even more than the shops, Heavenly Village is a lively place to get a good feel for the Lake Tahoe community. There’s often live music, as well as ice skating, spas, and mini-golf around the village. The Village is also where you’ll find some of the best restaurants in the region, such as The Loft and Base Camp Pizza Co. Time your visit around dinner time to taste test what the Tahoe culinary scene has to offer.

Once you’ve explored Heavenly Village thoroughly, hop on the Heavenly Village Gondola for expansive views over the Lake Tahoe area.

Optional: Ride the Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster

A fun add-on to the scenic gondola, especially in the summer when skiing and snowboarding aren’t happening, is to ride the Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster at Heavenly Ski Resort.

This high altitude gravity-powered coaster will not only give you a good adrenaline rush but also stunning views looking out over the lake from Heavenly Mountain.

Gambling at a Casino on the Nevada Side

To end your day in Lake Tahoe, try your hand at the slot machines or blackjack tables at one of the many casinos that line the Nevada side of the lake. A few of the most popular casinos in Lake Tahoe include Montbleu, Harrah’s, and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Even if you’re not that into gambling, similar to Las Vegas, it’s a fun activity to do at Lake Tahoe because it’s such a big part of the culture.

Finally, there are various dance clubs and bars in and near the casinos if you want to experience the Lake Tahoe nightlife before calling it a night.

Lake Tahoe Itinerary: Day 2

Road Trip Around the Perimeter of the Lake

There’s no better way to start a morning in Lake Tahoe than by exploring the perimeter of the lake.

The scenic 72-mile drive around Lake Tahoe takes around three hours with no stopping, but I’d give yourself at least five hours so you can take your time.

Hit the road early to avoid traffic and enjoy the viewpoints around the lake without the crowds. I’d also recommend driving the lake clockwise so you’re always driving on the right side of the road closest to the lake.

A few popular stops that can be added on to your Lake Tahoe road trip are Meeks Bay, Sugar Pine Point State Park (and the Ehrman Mansion), the Tahoe Maritime Museum, Gatekeeper’s Museum, Watson Cabin Museum, Kings Beach, Crystal Bay, Stateline Lookout, Mt. Rose Lookout, Memorial Point, Sand Harbor, Spooner Lake, and Cave Rock Vista Point.

If you have a couple of extra hours, I’d also add on a trip to the Olympic Museum at Squaw Valley, the Donner Party Museum, and the historic railroad town of Truckee.

Optional: Horseback Riding at Camp Richardson Corral

If you have the time to squeeze in an hour-long activity onto your road trip around the lake, sign up for a horseback ride through the Lake Tahoe wilderness at Camp Richardson Corral .

In operation since 1934, this family-owned corral is the place for scenic guided horseback rides or summer hay wagon rides for the little ones.

Their standard trail rides leave hourly in the summer and start at $56 per person. With tours lasting about an hour, you’ll see the best parts of South Lake Tahoe by horseback, as well as ride through the lush national forest, meadows, and see stunning lake views along the way.

Head to the Beach at Zephyr Cove

 Zephyr Cove Lake Tahoe

This is the perfect spot to relax for a couple of hours. You can go swimming in the transparent alpine water, enjoy parasailing or jet skiing, play a game of beach volleyball, or simply soak up the sun, read a book on the beach, and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Dinner Cruise on The MS Dixie II PaddleWheeler

Wrap up your time in Lake Tahoe with a dinner cruise on The MS Dixie II PaddleWheeler, which leaves from Zephyr Cove. The cruise usually leaves around 5pm every night and lasts for three hours so you can see the lake in daylight and at dusk.

On the cruise, you’ll enjoy live music, champagne, dancing, and a nice dinner on the water. The best part about this cruise is that you’ll be able to watch the sky change as it transitions into dusk from the water.

If you’re lucky and the cloud cover isn’t too low, you might luck out with being able to see one of Lake Tahoe’s multi-hued sunsets that light up the sky on your way back to the dock. Just make sure to bring layers and a warm jacket because the lake gets chilly at night.

Where to Eat in Lake Tahoe

Alpina Coffee Cafe – One of the best coffee shops in Lake Tahoe, Alpina Coffee Cafe is a good spot to get your caffeine fix and start your day in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The cafe is located in a cottage and offers the usual cafe fare, decent coffee, and even mimosas, wine, and beer if you’re looking to imbibe.

Base Camp Pizza Co – For some reason, Lake Tahoe has a ton of pizza places (I guess eating pizza near a beautiful lake isn’t the worst thing ever). One of the tastiest is Base Camp Pizza Co . Besides pizza, they have a good selection of other Italian fare that comes out in generous portions. This is a lively place that often has live music and an outdoor patio, perfect for those long and hot summer days.

Simple Bliss – For anyone looking for something a little healthier than pizza and burgers, Simple Bliss is South Lake Tahoe’s first and only vegan cafe. On the menu, you’ll find organic, soy-free, and gluten-free dishes that are full of colorful veggies. They also have a decent selection of vegan desserts and fresh juices and smoothies, as well as coffee and tea.

The Loft – A popular place for dinner and a show in Lake Tahoe, The Loft features bistro-style dishes and a casual setting full of friendly service, good food, and entertainment. They’re most well known for their nightly magic shows that are a fun way to spend an evening in Heavenly Village.

Heavenly Donuts – If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s no better place than Heavenly Donuts . The guys who own this shop have been making donuts for 30 years and they’ve now expanded to six locations on the West Coast. This is all to say that they know their stuff when it comes to donuts. At their location in Tahoe, you’ll be able to find every type of traditional donut your heart might desire.

Where to Stay in South Lake Tahoe

Although cabin rentals and Airbnbs can be a fun way to go when you’re staying in Lake Tahoe, especially if you’re traveling with a group, sometimes it’s nice to have the luxury of a hotel. These are some of my top picks for accommodation in Lake Tahoe for all budgets.

7 Seas Inn at Tahoe – The best word to describe this accommodation is charming . At 7 Seas Inn, you’ll find the friendliness and feel of a bed & breakfast but with an affordable price tag. Another plus to this inn is that it’s centrally-located. The property is only a seven-minute walk from the lake and just a few blocks from the most popular South Lake Tahoe casinos. Click here to read reviews and click here to see latest prices .

Grand Residences by Marriott – If you’re looking for a little more luxury, the Grand Residences by Marriott is a good mid-range accommodation option in South Lake Tahoe. Located right in the heart of Heavenly Village, there are various shops, restaurants, and the ski resort (and its scenic gondola) just steps away. Click here to read reviews and click here to see latest prices .

Hotel Azure – For a more luxe weekend getaway accommodation that won’t break the bank, Hotel Azure is a solid choice in South Lake Tahoe. Conveniently located right on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and right across the street from the lake, this recently remodeled accommodation oozes comfort and relaxation. The property features two hot tubs, a heated pool, a small gym, and a game room. It’s also dog-friendly if you’re looking for a hotel to bring your pooch. Click here to read reviews and click here to see latest prices .

Alberta's Icefields Parkway, Highway 16 to partially re-open following wildfire closure

Highway 16 will open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but access is subject to change without notice.

Social Sharing

Critical routes running through Alberta's rocky mountains, closed down by a wildfire still raging in Jasper National Park, are now slowly re-opening to traffic.

Drivers are being given access to key highways through two of Alberta's most popular national parks but travel will be restricted by the ongoing fight against a blaze that devastated the Jasper community.

The stretch of Highway 16 that cuts through the national park will open to all traffic on Friday, provided wildfire conditions allow for safe travel, Parks Canada said in a statement.

The highway will open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but access is subject to change without notice. Stopping or exiting off of Highway 16 is not permitted and officers will be patrolling the route to ensure drivers comply, officials said. Entry into the townsite remains prohibited.

A special advisory from DriveBC  said Highway 16 would be open from Hargreaves Road, near Mount Robson in B.C., and the Alberta-B.C. border, under the same conditions. There will be no services after Mount Robson.

Meanwhile, a southern stretch of the Icefields Parkway, a scenic and highly-travelled route that connects the community of Lake Louise in Banff National Park with the Jasper townsite, will also partially re-open on Friday.

The Icefields Parkway between Saskatchewan Crossing to the area of the Icefield Centre in the Athabasca Glacier area, will again be accessible.

The routes were closed more than two weeks ago when massive wildfires spread rapidly through Jasper National Park, threatening local highways, triggering a mass evacuation of the park, and incinerating about one-third of the structures in Jasper.

Highway 16 through Jasper has been blocked from just west of Hinton to the B.C. border since the evening of July 22, when Parks Canada and the municipality issued a mandatory evacuation order for the national park.

Evacuation orders remain in effect throughout Jasper National Park and access to the Icefields Parkway will only extend as far north as the Icefield Centre. The Icefields Parkway will only be accessible from the south via Highway 11 or Highway 1.

With the threat from the flames subsiding along portions of the route, visitors will again be granted access to one of the park's most popular destinations, the Columbia Icefield, an ancient expanse of ice about 100 kilometres southwest of the Jasper townsite.

In a statement, operator Pursuit said it is prepared to welcome visitors to the Columbia Icefield on Friday. The Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, Columbia Icefield Adventure, Ice Odyssey, Columbia Icefield Skywalk at Sunwapta Valley and Glacier View Lodge will all re-open, the operator said in a statement Thursday.

Banff National Park day-use areas and trails on the Icefields Parkway are now open to all visitors, except for Nigel Creek Pass, a backcountry trail near the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre.

With limited visitor safety resources, the Toe of the Athabasca Glacier trail is open but only to authorized operators, officials said.

All other trails and campgrounds in Jasper National Park remain closed.

Due to the current strain on park staff and emergency resources, officials are urging visitors to exercise extreme caution.

Not all services on the highway will be available and, with helicopters in high demand due to the wildfire response, any backcountry rescue operations could be severely delayed, officials said.

  • Highway 16 opens to commercial traffic on a limited basis as Jasper wildfire continues to burn out of control
  • Summer could be over long before the fight to tame the Jasper wildfire is won

The remainder of Jasper National Park will remain closed between the Athabasca Glacier area and Jasper townsite.

About 25,000 residents and visitors were forced from the park two weeks ago as a wildfire overwhelmed firefighting efforts.

There is still no timeline for when it will be deemed safe enough for more than 5,000 residents to return home.

The fire, which continues to burn out of control and remains a threat to the townsite, now spans an estimated 34,000 hectares.

It's expected that firefighting efforts will continue until fall and that the flames will continue burning unfettered for weeks, if not months.

Mountains overlook a landscape filled with burned out rubble. A charred yellow truck sits in the foreground.

As evacuees wait for word on re-entry, they are being granted limited access to the park to survey the damage.

Bus tours for residents began this week and separate tours are now being arranged for business owners.

According to the provincial government, 277 households have signed up for tours.

One bus was scheduled to leave Edmonton on Wednesday and pick up more residents in Hinton, Alta., before continuing to Jasper.

Tours of Jasper offer residents first glimpse of wildfire damage

Another bus is expected to travel from Calgary to Edson on Thursday, before continuing to Jasper Friday morning.

Officials with the Town of Jasper are working to finalize a plan for re-entry. A new website is expected to detail the progress.

A limited number of critical and retail services, including gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies, are conducting initial damage assessments to ensure essential services can be up and running when the gates to the park re-open to residents, officials said.

In a statement Thursday, Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland said the anguish felt by the community has been compounded by the death of a 24-year-old Calgary firefighter who was fatally injured on the front lines.

"The tragic loss of life so harshly confirms the ever-present danger of the tasks undertaken on our behalf, deepens our respect and appreciation for all those who continue to work so hard for us, and deepens our resolve," Ireland said.

Ireland, who lost his own home to the flames, said the grief for some evacuees who lost their homes and businesses, will be overwhelming. He hopes the tours offer some measure of closure.

No date has been set for re-entry, but emergency officials and crews on the ground are working tirelessly to make it a reality as soon as possible.

"Although no date can be set, you will be home — sooner now than before," he said.

"Your patience, your strength, your resolve will be rewarded. You will be home."

Alberta asking Ottawa to consider emergency wage subsidy, suspension of lease payments for Jasper businesses

By Kelsey Patterson

Posted August 5, 2024 11:42 am.

Last Updated August 6, 2024 9:05 am.

The Alberta government is urging Ottawa to put in place certain measures to help Jasper residents and businesses recover from last month’s devastating wildfire.

Premier Danielle Smith says she is asking the federal government to explore an emergency wage subsidy “given the town’s reliance on tourism and its inherent challenges with hiring.”

Smith is also calling on Ottawa to suspend lease payments “for a few months” to help businesses avoid layoffs.

“This will allow businesses to reopen faster, so that tourists can return as soon as possible, and Jasper can start recovering economically,” Smith told reporters.

The Alberta premier and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met in Hinton, east of Jasper National Park, on Monday to be briefed on the Jasper wildfire situation. It was Trudeau’s first visit to Alberta since the massive wildfire tore through Jasper two weeks ago, destroying one-third of the popular tourist town.

jasper day trips

The leaders met with wildfire officials and military personnel at the Jasper unified command centre in Hinton, but did not tour the town of Jasper itself. They participated in a moment of silence to honour the Calgary firefighter who died over the weekend.

Smith said she is also asking Ottawa to consider additional federal funding under the Housing Accelerator Fund. The Alberta premier believes that would help Jasper take on additional land planning responsibilities.

“Increased local control and resourcing will be crucial to speed up the redevelopment process,” she said.

Smith says the proposed measures could also help some businesses whose insurance does not cover them “because even though their business is disrupted, they haven’t completely lost their building, and so it does not qualify for wildfire coverage.” The premier called it a “unique situation.”

“There may just be some need for the federal government to step in and provide some bridge gaps if they find that there are some holes in the insurance coverage, but I would ask that they would be flexible on that,” Smith added.

Bus tours to Jasper

Business owners are being escorted into Jasper, alongside insurance adjusters, to assess the damage to their businesses.

That is separate from the organized tour buses taking Jasper wildfire evacuees into town. The first three bus tours — two from Hinton and one from Edmonton — departed Monday, with a total 62 people on board. The next tour is leaving Valemount, B.C., on Wednesday.

Residents taking part in the tours cannot leave the bus for safety reasons, the province explains. “People are not wandering around the town, walking around,” Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis said.

There is a law-enforcement presence on the tours, as well as mental health and crisis support personnel.

“We understand these tours are a critical component of the healing and recovery process, and we’re going to make sure that all Jasper residents affected by the fires have a chance to tour the community prior to re-entry,” said Ellis.

The Alberta minister of public safety said progress is being made in Jasper. He says emergency services like 911 and dispatch have been restored, as well as power to the downtown hospital and water treatment plant.

One of the more “time-consuming” issues, Ellis says, is regarding natural gas.

“We still have ATCO that literally has to go home to home, business to business to check to make sure that it’s safe, regarding the natural gas,” he said. “So it’s still ongoing… there’s still a risk, we still have to make that scene safe.

“But as you can see, we are we are progressing.”

Current wildfire situation in Alberta

Of the 119 active wildfires in Alberta, 15 are deemed to be out of control.

Recent cooler temperatures and significant rainfall in some areas provided relief to the firefighting efforts. Alberta Wildfire says there was no significant growth to fires overnight.

“There are still some dry parts of the province that haven’t received as much, but we’re hopeful over the next few days that much of the rain that’s been coming through will continue particularly in the south and through the central parts of the province,” said Alberta Wildfire’s Christie Tucker.

“And certainly firefighters will be able to take advantage of that and make good progress on those fires they’re working on, even if they haven’t received a lot of direct rain.”
