This small town on the eastern coast of the island has played a fundamental role in the history of Equatorial Guinea tourism. Located at the top of the mountain, it was founded by the Portuguese Ramos de Esquivel, the first settler on the island in 1507.

Here, archaeologists found numerous ceramic helmets with a particularly elegant decoration that could date from the end of the Carbonera (10th century). Some houses and administrative buildings today form the essence of this village, which already has only 250 to 300 inhabitants.

Annobon Island (Portuguese owner AnoBom, New Year) is located in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Gulf of Guinea and south of Sao Tome and Principe. It is an island of volcanic origin surrounded by several islets. It has a crater converted into a lagoon (Lake Mazafin) and a climate that oscillates between 20 and 30 ºC during its two seasons; The rainy season, from October to April, and the dry season, from May to July; Along with a transition season called Sasá, during the remaining months.

The population of the island of Annobon lives mostly in San Antonio de Palé, which is just a 10-minute drive from the airport. To get to the island there are two alternatives: Airplane, whose flights are scheduled on Fridays and Sundays with a duration of 1h and 40 min. And Boat, whose journey time is three days.

The city is small, so it is not necessary to use a vehicle to move inside it and visit the most emblematic places. It is worth noting the kindness of the local people and their willingness to help any tourist with directions or orientations in the city.

Equatorial Guinea is one of the African continent's least visited countries. It has a reputation for political instability with a history full of coups and corruption; and although vast offshore oil reserves generate huge wealth, the majority of Equatoguineans live well below the poverty line. However, for those in search of a totally different vacation experience, Equatorial Guinea offers plenty of hidden treasures. Pristine beaches and dense forests filled with endangered primates are just part of the country's considerable charm. 

Despite its name, Equatorial Guinea is not on the equator. Instead, it is located on the coast of Central Africa , and shares borders with Gabon to the south and east, and Cameroon to the north. 

Equatorial Guinea is a small country with a total area of 10,830 square miles/28,051 square kilometers. This area includes a slice of continental Africa and five inhabited islands. To give an idea of its size, Equatorial Guinea is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Maryland.

The capital of Equatorial Guinea is Malabo, a laid-back city located on the offshore island of Bioko.

According to the CIA World Factbook, July 2018 estimates put Equatorial Guinea's population at 797,457. Fang is the largest of the nation's ethnic groups, accounting for just over 85% of the population.

The country's tallest mountain, Pico Basilé, is within easy reach, while Bioko Island boasts some beautiful beaches. 

Monte Alén National Park

Covering 540 square miles/1,400 square kilometers, Monte Alén National Park is a veritable wildlife treasure trove. Here, you can explore forest trails and go in search of elusive animals including chimpanzees, forest elephants and the critically endangered mountain gorilla . Bird species are prolific here, and you can even arrange to stay overnight in one of the park's forest campsites. 

Located 30 miles/50 kilometers south of Malabo on Bioko Island, Ureka village is home to two beautiful beaches – Moraka and Moaba. During the dry season, these beaches offer the opportunity to watch as sea turtles emerge from the ocean to lay their eggs. The surrounding area is also home to pristine jungle and the beautiful waterfalls of the Eoli River. 

Corisco Island

Remote Corisco Island is situated to the south of the country near the border with Gabon. It is the archetypal paradise island, with deserted white sand beaches and shimmering aquamarine waters. Snorkeling and scuba diving are both excellent here, while the island's ancient cemetery dates back some 2,000 years and is thought to be one of the oldest in Central Africa. 

Getting There

Most visitors fly into Malabo International Airport (SSG), which is also known as Saint Isabel Airport. The airport is located approximately 2 miles/3 kilometers from the capital, and is serviced by international airlines including Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa and Air France. Most nationalities (except people from the U.S., China, Barbados and all CEMAC countries) require a visa to enter Equatorial Guinea, which must be obtained in advance from your nearest embassy or consulate .

Medical Requirements

If you are from or have recently spent time in a country where yellow fever is present, you will need to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination before being allowed to enter Equatorial Guinea. Yellow fever is endemic within the country, too, so vaccination is recommended for all travelers. How to get a VISA for Equatorial Guinea?

Starting from July 1, 2023, the government of Equatorial Guinea implemented the electronic visa, replacing the traditional visa . This is aimed at simplifying the visa acquisition process for travelers, tourists, businesspersons, etc.

The cost of the electronic visa for Equatorial Guinea is $50 plus an additional $25 for processing and handling fees, plus taxes. The payment and submission of documentation and requirements are done directly online, meaning all citizens from all countries must apply for the electronic visa online.

It’s worth mentioning that the approval of the so-called E-Visa is subject to authorities’ approval. Also, having the Equatorial Guinea visa is not a guarantee of entry into the country, as the final decision rests with the immigration officer who reviews it.

Obtaining your Equatorial Guinea visa is straightforward; you simply need to visit the website, fill out the visa form, submit your documents, and make the payment. If your visa is approved, it will be sent directly to your email. Keep in mind that you must have the visa approved and received upon arrival in the country, as it will be requested at immigration.

What vaccines are needed to go to Equatorial Guinea?

It is mandatory to carry your international vaccination certificate upon landing in Equatorial Guinea with the following vaccines:

• Yellow Fever: Must be reflected in the international vaccination certificate.

Recommended:

• Tetanus-Diphtheria
• Hepatitis A-B
• Typhoid fever

While it is possible that your certificate may not be requested, this does not mean that arriving vaccinated is not obligatory. Is Equatorial Guinea safe to travel?

The situation in Equatorial Guinea is generally acceptable and safe . However, as in any country in Africa, it is always advisable to take extreme precautions, particularly at night, with special attention to leisure places. In other words, it is always recommended to go with a reliable driver or taxi and above all it is advisable to avoid taking unofficial taxis especially at night.

Regarding the safety for tourists and the necessary documentation, on Bioko Island it is necessary to obtain official permission to visit some areas of tourist interest , such as the Moka Valley, Ureka and Basilé Peak. Generally, the tourist agency or tour operator of your choice will be responsible for this management.

With regard to the Continental Region, authorization to travel through tourist areas   issued by the Regional Tourist Office or, where appropriate, by the Bata regional police, is usually required.

This permit is also usually required to travel to the islands of Corisco and Annobón. If traveling to Corisco by any type of boat from Kogo, the authorization must be presented to the police authorities of this locality before boarding.

Transportation is safe

Public transportation in Equatorial Guinea is limited to taxi services . If you want to avoid them, most likely your only way to move around Equatorial Guinea is to drive, rent a driver or hire an agency that includes transportation.

Below you will find our opinion on this subject. However, registered and official taxi drivers should not be a big concern.

Low Risk of natural disasters

The risk of natural disasters can be considered low , as none have been recorded in a long time that have caused any casualties. Even if rains and storms occur during the rainy season, the floods and wind have only caused minor material damage.

There have been no recent terrorist attacks in the history of Equatorial Guinea. So, no active threat are active at this time.

Friendly for woman travellers

Equatorial Guinea does not pose any additional risk for women . If you are planning to travel to Equatorial Guinea, make sure you avoid the distant and lonely streets, both day and night, and don’t expose your things or show money in public. In top of that,  try to be accompanied on your nightly leisure outings.

What currency is used and how to exchange money in Equatorial Guinea?

The actual currency in Equatorial Guinea is the CFA franc . The Banknotes are divided into 10,000, 5,000, 1,000 and 500 FCFA. Currently, all of them are in circulation and are widely used.

Coins are divided into 500, 100, 50, 25, 10 and 5. In Equatorial Guinea, the coins of 500, 10 and 5 are practically non-existent and coins of 25 are less and less used.

How is the conversion rate to CFA?

Exchange rate at July 2020:

• 1  dolar USD = 574,067 F CFA
• 1 pound GBP = 721,240F CFA
• 1 yuan CNY = 82,1077 F CFA
• 1 yen JPY = 5.36384 F CFA

Only in some banks cheques or credit cards are accepted. Therefore , it is advisable to consult with our entity or the corresponding embassy which is the possibility of transferring money if necessary.

How to move around Equatorial Guinea?

The roads in Malabo are mostly paved. In general, the country has enviable infrastructure compared to closest countries. But there are many roads in rural areas that are not paved, and rain can cause you some trouble. In spit of that, under no circumstances, can rain make any main road impracticable.

Taxis are available at a price of 500 FCFA for the urban territory in Malabo and from 300 FCFA in the city of Bata. But be careful, as some illegal taxis drivers can increase prices for tourists. Trully, this is nothing new, and unfortunately it happens in all countries, including the developed ones. Firstly, our advice is to ask or negotiate the price before you go up. Secondly, we also need to let you know that taxis are shared. Therefore, don’t be afraid if someone else get in the taxi with you, that’s normal.

Also, minivans are available throughout the city, but we strongly advise against it.  Despite, vans are the cheapest transportation, can be crowded, unsafe and its route is not very clear.   In other words, you’ll have to ask for directions to save less than 300 FCFA.

Our recommendation, if you are a backpacker, you better arm yourself with patience to negotiate and talk to each taxi driver .   It has its charm, and you will get used to it if you move around the city and surroundings frequently.

If on the other hand, you are a tourist who wants to enjoy nature and not suffer so much, we recommend that you contact a travel agency or transport agency. In that case, they may assign you a driver for your entire stay.

And if you are an exclusive tourist, you may be interested in renting a car and a driver to have at your disposal 24 hours a day.

Under no circumstances do we recommend renting a car and driving it yourself .   The way you drive is not like any other occidental country.   To put it simply, driving can be a bit chaotic or wild.

Besides, GPS and maps are not very useful, as most sites will not appear.   So, we are forced to repeat it again.   Do not try to drive your own car.

How is the healthcare system in Equatorial Guinea?

Equatorial Guinea is a country with endemic tropical diseases, such as malaria and typhoid fever.   It is highly recommended to follow the prophylaxis prescribed by a doctor and use mosquito repellent if you plan to leave the city to more wild areas.

If you feel ill and have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, it is best to go to a medical center for testing.   Identiying and treating them on time, these diseases do not pose any serious health problems.   But if left untreated, they can become fatal.

The hospital facilities, both on the island of Bioko and in the Continental region are perfectly prepared for this type of disease. Although it may seem the opposite, they are quite effective in treating local diseases.

In MALABO , in case of accident or illness, you can go to La Paz Hospital (+240 555 666 160) or Guadalupe Clinic (+240 222 573 173), with the necessary reservations.   In addition, the “Castro Verde” Laboratory (+240 222 237 864) carries out reliable analyses on most tropical diseases.

In BATA , capital of the Continental Region, it is advisable to go to the La Paz Clinic, with the necessary reservations.

Where to buy in Equatorial Guinea?

The possibilities of purchasing commodities in Equatorial Guinea are unlimited.   First, we can find public markets in almost every major city.   This is the main point of trade for fresh food for the locals. You will find from vegetables to bush meat.   Everything can be found in a good market .

Because of the elevated popularity of the public markets,  different stalls  have been established around this area. This small shops sell the rest of things needed for the home.   So if you want to know how the locals buy, this is your chance.

As for big supermarket, the followings stand out:

Martinez Hermanos

Clearly the most prominent distributor and the preferred by a large majority.   It has been in the country for many years and offers mainly Spanish products.   It has several centres in all major cities and small warehouses in secondary cities.   Prices are slightly higher in comparison with Spain, but still reasonable.

Another big distribution company across the country, but cannot be compared with Martinez Hermanos. This distributor focuses on products intended for Muslim citizens because of the large amount of spices and varieties offered very typical of that culture.

Online shopping

Moreover, as prevention measures against COVID19, several online platforms have been developed recently to purchase your products online.   This services definetely facilitate your existence if you are in a remote area or difficult to access or simply you do not want to surround yourself with a crowd.

Among the others, currently stands out a plantform called Situcka , which has the main supermarkets in the city of Malabo.   This idea has not yet been implemented in other cities, but little by little we are sure it will take shape.

The gastronomy in Equatorial Guinea is very abundant and quite varied. Regardless your location, t here are many high quality restaurants with all prices.   Sadly, we can not make a detailed description of all of them. Nevertheless, we invite you to look at tripadvisor to get more information. Not only of those that we recommend, but of all the others, because unfortunately we left unmention many of them.

In the capital Malabo , we would highlight these:

L’atellier

It stands out for its great customer service and for a quite varied mix of Guinean and Western food.   Located in the city centre, it is probably one of the most exclusive in Malabo. Surprisingly, o n Friday nights different artists play live music which makes it very attractive if after dinner you feel like moving your body a bit.   A meal or dinner for two people would be around 30,000 FCA.

Italian restaurant Bidji Binia

This restaurant has become a classic of the city of Malabo.   It stands out mainly for its oversized pizza and to be honest, of a very high quality.   The service is good and the food excellent.   Possibly the most outstanding restaurant in terms of quality/price. A lunch or dinner for two people can be around 15,000 FCA.

To highlight a more humble restaurant, this is among our favorites.   Blackspoon is located between Ela-Nguema and the Sipopo roundabout.   They serve both African food and wonderful chicken skewers that have us in love.   It is clearly the cheapest of all and a good place to have a traditional lunch or dinner for less than 10,000 FCA per couple

In Bata city, we would highlight the following:

 Manila Restaurant – Terrace San Miguel

An oasis of calm in the middle of the beautiful promenade.   In this place you can enjoy exclusive food on the top floor as well as a wonderful place to relax on the lower floor.   They have from menus of the day at an affordable price to the most exclusive food in the city.   It is a place worth visiting if you are in Bata City.   As a souvenir, you can photograph yourself with a real-size representation of the famous albino gorilla Snowflake from Equatorial Guinea.

As if that were not enough, they also have live music, the best views of the sea, food at home and celebration of events.   Manila Restaurant, A luxury within everyone’s reach.

La Ferme restaurant

La Ferme Restaurant is located in one of the most touristic areas of the city of Bata, the beach of Bome.   The food and service is excellent.

This restaurant has spectacular sea views, and also has a large terrace with tables arranged around its pool.   If while you wait for your food you want to walk a bit on the beach.   Here you can do it.

Things to do in Equatorial Guinea

There are many things to do and visit in Equatorial Guinea, first and foremost all its islands.   The island of Bioko , cradle of the Bubi culture;   The island of Anobon, magical and totally unexplored place;   Corisco and its paradisiacal beaches and we cannot forget the mainland with Rio Muni and Monte Alen.

In short, there are many things to see and perhaps not enough time to see everything on a trip.   That’s why below we detail some sites in each region you should try to visit, from there and always according to your interests, you can plan your trip knowing the top places.

What should I visit in the insular region?

The insular region is subdivided into the following areas:

Bioko Island

It is the largest island in the country and where the capital, Malabo, is located.   Therefore, as we mentioned earlier, it is your starting point on your trip to Equatorial Guinea, and fortunately for you, it contains a wealth of places and activities.

On the other hand, it is the area most prepared to receive tourism, so if you do not consider yourself a good adventurer, visiting only this island is not a bad option. In other post you can find the 10 best thing to do in Malabo.

The island of Annobón is located in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Gulf of Guinea and south of Sao Tome and Principe.   It is an island of volcanic origin surrounded by several islets visible from its wonderful beach.   It also has a lagoon (Lake Mazafin) in the center of the island.   Undoubtedly, it is a destination little known but it is advisable to visit.   A place of fishing and absolute peace.

The continental region is possibly where we can find the greatest variety of unexplored places and beaches. So let’s proceed with a summary of those that seem most important to us:

When is the best time to visit Equatorial Guinea?

Equatorial Guinea is located in an area with tropical and equatorial climate, characterized by high humidity throughout the year and temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees. It is important to protect oneself from the sun during dry periods.

Despite this, the climate varies depending on the area of the country. In the Continental Region, the dry season occurs from December to March and from June to September. If you want to visit during the European summer, it is recommended to focus on the continental area and visit Monte Alen, Corisco, and the interior of the country.

On the other hand, if the interest is in Bioko Island, it should be visited between October and April, as from then on, the rains begin, although they do not prevent most excursions.

In addition to rain, travelers should also be prepared for humidity, which can reach very high levels in Equatorial Guinea. It is important to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, as well as sunscreen and insect repellent.

In summary, the climate of Equatorial Guinea is humid tropical and varies according to the region. The dry season is the best time to visit the country, although it is important to be prepared for humidity and the possibility of rain. How long is it recommended to go to Equatorial Guinea? 

This is the million-dollar question, and to be honest, as much time as you have . In general, if you like to have contact with nature, perhaps 7 days on the Island of Bioko are enough if you prefer a quiet tourism.

If you want to visit the continental region, we recommend at least 10 days for the trip to be worthwhile, the same if you want to go to the wonderful island of Annobon. In general, we cannot give you an exact number of days since it depends on your interests.

• If you are looking to visit all the countries of the world.   Maybe 2 days on Bioko Island and 2 days on the mainland will be enough to give you an idea of what the country looks like.  But forget about knowing their secrets.
• If this is your first experience in Guinea, and you want a bit of adventure and nature, with 7 days on Bioko Island you should have time to know the most important sites and observe a lot of nature.
• If you want to know the whole country and its secrets, it will be necessary at least 2 weeks.   This would include 7 days on Bioko Island, 3 days on Annobón and 4 days on the mainland.

Is it required to purchase a tourist package to visit Equatorial Guinea?

No, you don’t need a tourist package to visit Equatorial Guinea.   But we strongly recommend you to have someone you trust in the country because it will save you quite a lot of headaches and lost time getting permits.  

After all, you’re on vacation, you don’t want to spend a day or two waiting for permission to go on an excursion.   But anyway, it’s a totally personal decision.

We have already received requests of all kinds, from crossing to Cameroon in cayuco, trying to cross from Cameroon to Gabon through Guinea by truck, private visits to Annobón and Corisco etc…

Pulsating to very African rhythms with its patchwork of markets (just check out the colourful veg in Madina bazaar), beer bars and Malinke music dives, Conakry is everything you’d expect of a capital representing one of West Africa’s most haphazard nations.

Coups and counter coups have unfolded (often bloodily) between its streets over the decades, and in the heart of the town still stands the haunting remnants of Camp Boiro, where political prisoners were tortured during the upheavals under President Sékou Touré.

However, pretty and important sights like St. Mary’s Cathedral and the National Museum of Guinea do well to balance all that out these days.

2. Iles de Los

A spattering of islands that sits just off the coast from the beating streets of Conakry city, the Iles de Los offer a glimpse of what Guinea could be, or would be, were it not for its unstable political life.

Sprawled out over the islands of Tamara, Roume and Kassa (along with a few smaller add-on isles), the archipelago is a place of sloping golden sands and mangroves, lanky palm trees and the salty froth the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of the top beaches line the coastal stretches of Ile de Roume and Kassa, with a smattering of resort hotels on offer, and easy access from the jetties of the capital by boat.

3. National Park of Upper Niger

Dominating a whopping 6,000 square kilometers in the midst of eastern Guinea, the National Park of Upper Niger (or the National Park Haut Niger, as it’s known locally) is now on the very forefront of West African conservation.

A vast expanse of riparian woodlands and savannah, winding rivers and montane thickets is home to some of the only remaining dry forest in the country.

Between the tree boughs and canopies, the reserve hides chimpanzees and Gambian mongooses, uber-rare West African manatees and curious giant pangolins.

For outdoorsy types and wildlife lovers, it’s surely the biggest attraction in the country!

4. Nzérékoré

This fast-growing city has been a regular receptacle for refugees fleeing conflicts in other West African countries to the south.

Consequently, there’s a truly diverse population of locals inhabiting the sprawling barrios and shanty towns that emerge from the sweeping forest lands that run along the length of the Liberian border, not to mention a thriving series of markets in the heart of the city.

Moreover, Nzérékoré is known for its silver smiths and great location just a stone’s throw from both the Forêt Classée de Diécké to the south, and the wildlife-rich hills of Mount Nimba to the east.

5. Fouta Djallon Highlands

A carpet of green interspersed only by the occasional hoodoo and craggy protrusion of ancient sandstone rock, weathered and eroded away by century after century of attrition, covers the vast expanse known as the Fouta Djallon.

Occupying the heart of Guinea, this verdant landscape of jungle-dressed valleys and lichen-spotted stones has garnered a reputation as one of the most beautiful in the country.

Hikers come to scale the lookouts of Petteh Djiga, to spy out the headwaters of the Gambia and Senegal rivers, to encounter the rustic farming communities of the Mande peoples, and plenty, plenty more.

6. Mount Nimba

Straddling the tristate join of Guinea, Ivory Coast and Liberia in the extreme south-east of the nation, Mount Nimba marks the highest point in the wild and rugged Nimba Range.

It arches like a great, grass-clad backbone from the rolling fields of swaying savannah that surround it, with verdant highland meadows and lawns of green that are often far above the clouds.

Today, the whole area is an ecotourist’s dream-come-true, and comes complete with a UNESCO tag that’s intended to protect all the otherworldly and endangered creatures within: the viviparous toad; zebra duikers; pygmy hippos – the list goes on!

7. Cape Verga

Bamboo beach huts and swaying coconut palms, shimmering yellow sands and the endless crash of the Atlantic rollers make Cape Verga – poking its way out of the Guinea coastline some hours’ drive north out of Conakry – seem more akin to the fabled beach paradises of Madagascar or the Caribbean.

You might just have to pinch yourself to remember you’re in West Africa, but that’s okay, because you’re almost bound to have the beaches of Sobane and Bel Air (the home of President Conte’s all-new resort hotel – a dubious construction) almost entirely empty; save for the seagulls, the occasional sunbather and old, salt-sprayed granite boulders.

Situated almost smack bang in the heart of Guinea, just a stone’s throw from the rising peaks and forests of the aforementioned Fouta Djallon, Labé represents the second-largest city in the entire country.

Benefitting from a historic location on the crossroads of some of West Africa’s most important trading routes, this one’s market (known suitably as the Grand Marche) booms daily with sellers from a far afield as Senegal, Mali and Morocco.

There’s also a fine local museum that chronicles the fascinating cultural history of the Fouta Djallon region.

The roaring cataracts of the Chutes de Sala are also day-trip territory from Labé.

The birthplace of Guinea’s onetime leader, Sékou Touré, Faranah is has transformed from tiny little agriculture town in the heart of the nation to a built-up provincial center in just the last century.

One of the favoured gateways to the popular Haut Niger National Park (which lies just a stone’s throw to the east), it’s also got a large mosque and oodles local marketplaces to explore.

Add to that a surprisingly lively nightlife, and it’s easy to see why Faranah is slowly becoming more of a staple on the intrepid traveler’s route through West Africa.

Just a short ride through the West African savannah from the throbbing capital city of Conakry, the little bucolic getaway of Kindia offers a respite from the urban fray of Guinea’s coast.

Head into the small provincial town of low-rise cottages and the occasional thatched hamlet to experience the day-to-day vibes of country life.

You’ll get to sample fou fou breads in tasty okra sauce, wander the marketplace and even break out into the fringes of the Fouta Djallon Region, where the dramatic plug-hole waterfalls of Voile de la Mariee carve the rocks in two.

Sprawled out over the eastern plains of Guinea and occupying more land even than the capital, Kankan is hardly the most compact city in West Africa.

However, neatness has never been this historical spot’s strong point, and today visitors will need to navigate the dusty streets and the meanders of the Niger River to uncover tales of its past importance as the heart of the erstwhile Baté Empire.

And in the present day, Kankan has made a name for itself as one of Guinea’s great learning centers, not to mention an important stopover on the way through to Mali.

Little Boké was a boomtown in the dark, dark years of European slave trading in West Africa.

Along its harbours and jetties, all lining the meanders of the Rio Nunez, thousands of convoys of human cargo once departed for the Atlantic coast just a little to the west.

Today, the visceral reality of this past can still be seen in the fort-prison come museum of Fortin de Boké, which does well to chronicle the lives and plight of captured slaves during the era.

The town’s location also makes it a prime place to stopover on the way from Conakry to the Guinea-Bissau border in the north.

13. Dubreka

Straddling the inlets of Sangareya Bay and the winding water channels, bayous and vast expanses of mangrove swamps that edge out towards the Atlantic in this part of the country, little Dubreka offers an interesting little picture of rural Guinea life.

However, with the great table-top mountains looming above, it’s easy to see that the natural side of things are the town’s biggest draw.

And none can rival the roaring waterfalls of the beautiful Les Cascades De La Soumba, which drizzle and crash over a series of rocky escarpments close to the center.

14. Massif du Ziama

A seemingly endless dash of greenery that occupies the deep southern reaches of eastern Guinea, the Massif du Ziama is considered one of the most important reserves in the nation.

It’s dressed in dense, misty swathes of dabema and bako trees, trodden by snapping crocs and the carapaces of tortoises, not to mention some of Guinea’s most remote human tribespeople.

Tagged as a biosphere by UNESCO, the 1,000 square kilometer area of the Ziama Forest that sits atop the plateaus is of special importance to conservationists.

15. Kissidougou

Kissidougou is one of the rapidly-expanding cities of southern Guinea.

Imbued with the cultural diversity of Liberians and Ivorians, all mingled and mixed with the traditions of the ethnic Kissi peoples native to the prefecture, its ramshackle markets and mud-caked streets ooze a certain charm.

However, it’s the hills that surround 100,000-strong Kissidougou that are really of interest.

It’s here that great fields of coffee beans herald in some of Guinea’s top plantations, and where the West African forests begin to sprawl over the hills.

There’s also a great museum, for that fix of local history and heritage.
