cruise ships sailing from fort lauderdale

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

U.S. News Insider Tip : Once per sailing, guests are invited to watch Tangled: The Musical in the Walt Disney Theater. This Broadway-style show retells the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider with three new original songs, puppets, and beautiful costumes. This show is very popular, so it's best to get to the theater about an hour before the show starts to get a good seat. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime. – Megan duBois, Contributor

Allure of the Seas

The 6,826-passenger Allure of the Seas, unveiled in 2010, is among the largest cruise ships in the world. There are a whopping 2,054 crew members on board to cater to passengers' needs. Along with signature line amenities like rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks, the ship houses seven unique neighborhoods with a variety of activities, shows and dining options. The ship underwent a $165 million refurbishment in 2020, which added approximately 50 new staterooms, the Ultimate Abyss (the tallest slide at sea), redesigned kids and teens spaces, new dining venues and more.

Other standout features include a zip line that descends 10 decks, two surf simulators and a science lab. Plus, with 19 dining options – and a Starbucks at sea – every member of the family will be satisfied.

A region of the world known for its coastal scenery is the Mediterranean. So hop on a ship in Florida and head to Italy and Greece. Eat pasta on the Amalfi Coast or island-hop in Greece and see the unbelievable cities of Santorini and Corfu.

If you’re ready for a cool experience (literally the coolest), head to Antarctica and explore the southernmost point on the globe. See the stunning and rural landscapes of the mysterious seventh continent.

Can’t decide which of these fantastic locations to visit? Consider a World Cruise that departs from Florida. These multi-month cruises or shorter segments can take you anywhere from South Africa to Australia and New Zealand to Hawaii.

Preparing to Cruise in Florida

Ready to board your dream cruise in Florida? Here are some tips to help you make the most of your vacation:

Prepare with sunscreen:  There’s a reason Florida is called the Sunshine State. It’s warm and sunny. That’s why sun-bathing is a year-round activity here. Prepare to be sun-soaked in Florida but you don’t want to end up with a sunburn on your vacation, so lather up every few hours.

Consider transportation options:  Depending on what you want to do and where you’re coming from, you’ll want to decide about your transportation options. If you plan to drive your own car, you can explore Florida before your cruise and conveniently book a parking spot at our Princess lot at the cruise port. If you’re flying to Florida, many find that renting a car is a great way to explore the area.

Dress for success:  Pack comfortable casual clothing like shorts and t-shirts  for the warm Florida weather. Also, include a jacket and warm clothes for cooler destinations and some dressier outfits for onboard dining and events. Don't forget swimwear, a hat and sunscreen for days spent by the pool or on the beach.

Be prepared for hurricane season:  Florida is a stunning state, but it does come with some weather challenges occasionally. Hurricane season runs through the summer and fall. To be prepared, monitor weather reports surrounding the period of your departures, and be aware of any delays or cancellations. These months often offer the cheapest cruising prices, so don’t be afraid to book a cruise then! They can be some of the best months to cruise.

Bring your passport:  Not every destination you’re going to explore will require a passport, but the US government recommends that you bring yours just in case.

Arriving & Departing

Port Everglades' cruise guests enjoy:

  • Secured parking with over 5,500 spaces in two  parking  garages and three gated surface lots within walking distance to the terminals
  • Free cell phone waiting lots for people picking up debarking guests
  • Efficient drop-off areas
  • Covered walkways
  • Elevator/escalator access to gangways
  • Curbside porter service for baggage
  • Only 1.8 miles from  Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Ideal for a  post-cruise vacation  in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area

Here are a few simple travel tips to enhance your experience.

Departing passengers (embarkation)

  • Follow cruise line’s  assigned check-in time. To alleviate delays, do not arrive prior to assigned time.
  • Bring government-issued photo ID. Anyone 18-years-old and older must produce a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’ license or passport) at the security checkpoint before entering the port.
  • Keep identification/cruise documents handy.  Put them in your carry-on bag. Do not pack them in your checked luggage. You will need to produce these documents at the port’s security checkpoint and several times before boarding your ship.
  • Follow signs. Colorful digital wayfinding featuring Florida native plants and animals will appear with ship names and terminal assignments.
  • Assist security. Security measures at the port help to ensure your safety. Please cooperate with security personnel to expedite boarding.
  • Weapons of any type are not permitted inside the port.  Cruise guests traveling by car must store weapons off-site, including guns, off port property during their cruise vacation.
  • Tag your luggage.  Complete and attach the luggage tags provided by your cruise line before you give your luggage to porters for delivery to your stateroom. Porters can provide additional tags.
  • Carry valuables. Place in your carry-on bag valuables, fragile items, personal belongings and medications, along with your photo ID and cruise documents.

Returning passengers (disembarkation)

  • Wait for shore-leave announcement. Passengers typically debark the ship between 7 and 9AM.
  • Wait for a call. People coming to pick up returning cruise guests may park for free in our cell phone waiting lots located at the Port Administration Building, 1850 Eller Drive, just past the security checkpoint and at the Cell Phone Lot north of Cruise Terminal 18. Paid parking is also available in the  parking garages .
  • Consider porter service. Porter services hired by your cruise line can be used to deliver your bags to private cars, taxis and limousines. Tipping is optional.
  • Time your airport arrival. Airlines at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport may only be able to check your bags up to two hours before your scheduled flight.
  • Extend your vacation.  If you have a later flight, extend your stay with a tour of Greater Fort Lauderdale. Many cruise lines offer post-cruise shore excursions that take care of your transportation and luggage.

BREAKING NEWS

Heat index to soar to 107 degrees in Central Florida. Here’s where rain is most likely

The two largest cruise ships in the world set sail from florida. here’s how they compare, utopia of the seas sailings start july 19.

Haley Coomes , Digital Content Producer

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – With ports along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Florida is a top cruise destination. On Thursday, a new ship was homeported at Port Canaveral, and it’s another Royal Caribbean behemoth.

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas will offer 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday cruises. The vessel can hold 5,668 passengers and has 18 total decks, The cruise ship is the first of its kind to debut three-night weekend and four-night getaways to CocoCay. The ship includes a 10-story dry slide, waterslides, rock-climbing walls, over 40 dining options and two casinos.

While impressive in size, it’s second to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, which is the world’s largest cruise ship.

The Icon of the Seas had its maiden voyage out of Miami in January 2024. As Jalopnik put it, it’s the size of five Titanics . A striking feature is its upper deck, where there’s a different pool option for every day of the week. There’s also Category 6 — the ship’s 17,000-square-foot water park, currently the largest at sea.

Below is a breakdown of how the two vessels compare in size.

The Icon of the Seas is part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, while Utopia is in the Oasis. Port Canaveral is also home to the third-largest ship, Wonder of the Seas .

A South Florida-based mom and cruise expert’s 5 favorite hotels to stay in before sailing from Miami or Fort Lauderdale

A ny cruise that requires you to fly in (or heck, even drive several hours) to your home port warrants an overnight stay. Trust me on this one: Flight delays and other unexpected hiccups—especially when traveling with kids—happen no matter how Type A you are of a planner. Besides, when you cruise from Florida, do you really need an excuse to extend your time in the sunshine ?

Port Miami and Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) are two of the world’s biggest cruise ports, and they happen to be neighbors. The cities are connected by a high-speed rail system known as Brightline , which also links up with other South Florida hot spots: Aventura, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach. The ease of getting to and from each city means more options for your family, when it comes to planning the perfect pre-cruise stay.

As a mom who’s lived in every South Florida county and cruised countless times from the region’s two major ports, I am confident these five hotels within Brightline’s network will kick off your cruise vacation with peace of mind and easily accessible fun.

(Note: I’ve intentionally left out mention of the Port of Palm Beach, due to the fact that it offers only one cruise from Florida, and it is not the most family-friendly option.)

CRUISE SMARTER: Cruising with kids in the Caribbean? Don’t feel bad about skipping these 6 ports

Hotel: Gale Miami Hotel and Residences

Sweeping views of your cruise ship docked in Miami’s Biscayne Bay? Vacation mode: unlocked. Instagram-worthiness aside, what I love most about this new hotel is how effortless it makes getting a taste of family activities in Miami. In addition to being next to the cruise port, Gale Miami Hotel and Residences is only a 15-minute walk to the Phillip Patricia Frost Museum of Science, downtown Miami, and the Brightline train station.

Spacious accommodations—some with more than one room and homey amenities like kitchens and laundry facilities—make sure families of any size are comfortable. Other standout features include on-site restaurants oozing with culture, a resort-style pool (perched on the ninth floor to make sure you never miss a view), and a kids’ playroom. Keep an eye out for special pre-cruise offers to save.

2. Aventura

Hotel: jw marriott miami turnberry resort & spa.

Lather up with sun screen before you head to JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa , because you’ll want to spend all day at Tidal Cove. The hotel’s water park is loaded with fun features and rides, including a dreamy lazy river, multiple pools, waterslides, a surf simulator, and dedicated pool and play area for babies and toddlers. In my experience, it’s worth the splurge to go with a cabana. Service is fast and efficient—a priceless convenience when you’ve got hangry kiddos—and the inclusions such as a stocked mini-fridge, safe, and flat-screen TV also come in handy if you plan to spend a whole day there.

With an outdoor attraction this elaborate, you can only imagine how family-friendly the hotel is inside. Roomy one- and two-bedroom accommodations, a youth club, and multiple restaurants—including one with a “kids eat free” menu for ages 3 and under—round out the highlights.

STRETCH YOUR WALLET: 8 cruise lines that let kids sail free in 2024

3. Fort Lauderdale

Hotel: riverside hotel.

For those who crave Old Florida charm, the Riverside Hotel offers the perfect family retreat in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s bustling Las Olas Boulevard district. The circa-1936 property has a long track record of treating guests like family. Along with intimate service, families can enjoy spacious rooms and several restaurants, all at an affordable price point, compared to other area hotels.

One of the biggest selling points is Riverside Hotel’s location. Not only is it steps from all the restaurants, shops, and entertainment of Las Olas Boulevard, but it’s also merely a mile away from the Museum of Discovery and Science—one of the most fun family activities in Fort Lauderdale—as well as the Brightline train station. Port Everglades is a short drive away.

Psst: The Riverside Hotel is in the midst of a massive makeover that will revitalize its interiors (think new flooring, furniture, etc.) while preserving the property’s storied past. It’s slated to be complete in winter 2024.

4. Boca Raton

Hotel: the boca raton.

One night is not enough time to experience all the family fun The Boca Raton has to offer. The seriously splurge-worthy, palatial-like property makes sure kids feel just as pampered as their parents or caretakers. An interactive splash zone, whimsical kiddie cabanas, separate clubs for youngsters and teens, a 450-foot lazy river, surf simulator, and private beach only scratch the surface of what awaits.

Need to decompress from a long day of travel? Don’t feel guilty about utilizing the hotel’s childcare services, so you can indulge at the award-winning Spa Palmera, inspired by Spain’s Alhambra Palace. Robust offerings of restaurants and accommodations are the cherry on top. I wouldn’t recommend walking from Boca Raton’s Brightline station to the hotel—it’s a tad too far, especially with kids in tow—but rest assured it’s less than a 10-minute drive away.

TOES IN THE SAND: 14 best Florida beaches for families

5. West Palm Beach

Hotel: hilton west palm beach.

Seldom do I come across a big name-brand hotel with as much personality as the Hilton West Palm Beach . The outdoor pool can either make you feel like you’re at a lavish resort, in one of its private cabanas—or at a backyard soiree, with a green space dedicated to family lawn games. Standard rooms have a maximum capacity of five, but some do connect if more space is needed.

Directly outside the hotel, families can take advantage of all the dining, entertainment, and activities geared toward children. The kid-friendly, downtown hot spots of CityPlace and Clematis Street are both within walking distance of the Hilton West Palm Beach. Other area highlights include the Palm Beach Zoo, Cox Science Center and Aquarium, and Palm Beach island. The Brightline station is also an easy walk to Hilton West Palm Beach.

Having taken the Brightline train from West Palm Beach to Miami for a past cruise, I can assure you it’s a smooth and quick ride—getting you there in a little more than one hour. Still, it is the northernmost stop in South Florida, so I’d reserve this option for those who’ve “been there, done that” in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, or who simply want to escape the bustle of the bigger cities.
