Unveiling Lake Como’s Gems

Onlywood boat, honesty like yours fosters our growth.

Our friends booked this apertivo cruise for a small wedding party. The whole experience was absolutely amazing. Great little boat, delicious Prosecco and charcuterie, and Omar + Sara were fun, vibrant hosts. Cruising Como with friends, food, and the indescribable scenery was one of the top 10 moments in my life.

You must definitely see Lake Como from the waters perspective, and Omar’s experience was the best for that opportunity. He was very courteous and hospitable. Omar provided great food and local wine during the experience and it was cool to see all the different towns Lake Como has to offer.

Absolutely fabulous! Omar and his assistant are very knowledgeable of the area and create the perfect environment for you to enjoy yourself. The boat is amazing and views are one-of -a-kind. This was the highlight of our trip!

If you need a boat to cruise the Como lake, the #onlywood is the one to pick! Excellent service, great Italian Prosecco provided. Omar is a great host, and has many tales to share about the Como lake. I recommend jumping in the water, as that gives another high!

My favorite thing we did during our visit to Lake Como. Omar and Sara were so attentive and lovely throughout the entire experience. I want to come back to Lake Como just to do this again!

My group had a great time on this cruise with Omar and Domenico. Omar was easy to communicate with and set up a shuttle service to get us home following the boat tour. Snacks and drinks were provided. This is a great deal and a much cheaper alternative to many of Como’s boat tours.

Travel tips for Lake Como trips

Our trips to Lake Como are designed to include a mix of guided sightseeing and free time so you can see everything on your Lake Como wish list. Here are some can’t-miss things to do on our tours of Lake Como.

  • Take a boat cruise . It’s one of the  can’t-miss excursions on tour in Italy ! Staffer Claudia agrees that it was one of her highlights from her tour of Lake Como. “The best way to experience Lake Como is by boat, and the  Lake Como Cruise excursion  is a must,” she said. “You hop on a small cruise with your group and get to spend the afternoon exploring beautiful lakeside villages like Bellagio, and marveling at some of Italy’s most stunning estates, including George Clooney’s breathtaking Villa Oleandra.”
  • Stroll along the Lake Como Greenway.  If you enjoy taking in striking views while you walk, this nature path is one for the books. Beginning in Colonno, the path takes walkers through a few of Lake Como’s villages, past colorful gardens, and of course, past stunning villas. You won’t want the trail to end!
  • Shop on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi . If you’re looking for a place to shop for authentic, local goods, this road—the main road of Bellagio’s Old Town—is where you’ll want to begin.
  • Take in the views from Punta Spartivento.  If you’re a bit tired after your shopping trip in the Old Town, this viewing point in Bellagio is the perfect place to slow down and take in more beauty. The foot bridge out onto the lake will give you a 360-degree view of the lake’s famous “branches.”
  • Walk along Sentiero del Viandante.  Craving more nature walks? Good, because we have another one for you! This path on the eastern coast of the lake dates back to the Roman period and has some interesting spots for you to stop along the way, including the Castle of Vezio that sits on a hilltop overlooking the lake.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit the Lake Como area is from  April to October , when the weather is warm and mild. But, like  traveling in Italy , the best time to travel on tours to Lake Como depends on factors such as your ideal weather and whether you want to experience any cultural events that take place during certain times of year.

For more tips on choosing the best time of year for travel to Lake Como, check out our  Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide .

Dozens of spectacular sights await travelers on Lake Como tours. Here are a few you can see while traveling on our Lake Como guided tours.

  • Bellagio.  We visit the charming hilltop town of Bellagio on our tour of  Lake Como, the Italian Riviera & Venice  for a reason! Bellagio is right on the tip of land where the two “branches” of the lake come together and has earned its title as the Pearl of Lake Como. It’s famous for its villas along the water, narrow cobblestone pathways, and boutiques selling local food, perfumes, leather goods, and keepsakes.
  • Villa Carlotta.  Located in the town of Tremezzina, right across the lake from Bellagio, this impressive 17-acre property features ornate gardens, an on-site museum, and sweeping views of Lake Como.
  • The Como-Brunate Funicular.  Want to keep soaking in gorgeous views of the lake? Look no further than the funicular railway that connects the city of Como with the village of Brunate. It made its first journey in 1894; today it runs dozens of times daily for tourists and locals alike.
  • Forte di Fuentes.  If you’re a history buff, these hilltop ruins—among the few remains of Spanish domination in this area—are a must-see.
  • Villa del Balbianello.  Consisting of two residential buildings, a church, a terrace, and elaborate gardens, this spot has made cameos in many famous films. Head inside during your free time while on tour in Lake Como and you’ll be surrounded by sculptures, artifacts, and glass paintings.

Lake Como tours can include everything from casual strolls through charming towns to cruises to meals at elegant restaurants. You’ll be ready with these essentials in your suitcase.

  • A bathing suit.  Travelers on summertime Lake Como tours won’t want to miss taking a dip in the lake’s cool waters.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  The Lake Como area is laced with scenic walking paths, and sensible shoes will make exploring all the more enjoyable.
  • Light layers.  On our tours of Lake Como you can experience a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, from bright sun to light rain to wind. You’ll be ready for anything with a light jacket or wrap in tow.
  • Sunscreen.  The sun can be strong in Italy, so bring a hat, sunglasses, a light wrap, and sunscreen.

Italy serves up some of the best food in the world, and our Lake Como tour packages include opportunities to sample Italian classics and regional, Lombardian specialties alike. Here are several to try while traveling on our Lake Como trips.

  • Polenta.  This dish originated in Lombardy (the region of Italy where Lake Como is located) and is a must-try. Polenta is boiled cornmeal that can be served hot and creamy, or as a loaf once it has had time to solidify. It has a mild flavor, so is often topped with delicious cheese, cooked vegetables, and sauces.
  • Risotto alla Milanesa.  This simple yet sophisticated dish gets its bold yellow color from the addition of saffron.
  • Tortelli di zucca.  This pumpkin-stuffed pasta dish is available year-round in the Lombardy region of Italy. Made with fresh pumpkin puree, a blend of spices, Parmesan, crushed amaretti biscuits, and candied fruits, this delicate balance of sweet and savory is what makes the dish unique.
  • Torrone.  You will find that nougat is a popular dessert or snack in many European countries. The Lombardy region is known for its “Torrone di Cremona.” There’s even a celebration in Cremona in honor of this sweet treat made with honey, almonds, and vanilla.
  • Panettone.  Filled with candied fruit, almonds, and honey, this festive bread is usually served around Christmastime in Italy. You can find it at European Christmas markets, but be sure you try it while you’re in Lombardy, where it originated.
  • Gelato.  If you ask us, no trip to Italy is complete with a cone or cup teeming with this beloved Italian treat. Staffer Claudia recalls, “When summer starts, there are so many gelaterias to choose from… Don’t forget to add a delicious waffle cookie to the gelato of your choice!”

Wondering what to wash it all down with? Check out our Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide for tips on what to drink →

One of the best ways to get around Lake Como is by boat. We recommend taking a boat ride (or two!) to take in everything this spectacular region has to offer. Once you’ve docked, the best way to get around the small lakeside towns is on foot.

Lake Como or Lake Garda: which Italian idyll should you visit?

Two dreamy lakeside destinations, so many reasons to visit...

lake como or lake garda

Choosing between Lake Como or Lake Garda is certainly not an easy to decision to make. Each has unique draws, yet both share the natural splendour and appealing lakeside lifestyle that have made this region of Italy a European bucket list destination.

lake como or lake garda

The largest of Italy 's lakes, Lake Garda is located in northeast Italy, spanning the three regions of Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige. For those travelling by air, Verona is the closest airport, located around 22km from the south coast of Lake Garda – where you'll find resorts including Peschiera and Sirmione – a journey easily taken by car, bus or train.

EXPLORE LAKE GARDA WITH GH

A little further afield, Milan's Linate airport and the timeless city of Venice are also located conveniently close to Lake Garda (with fast trains from the latter taking only just over an hour), so it makes a great choice for anyone looking to go on a multi-destination Italian tour. Good Housekeeping 's eight-day Lake Garda, Venice and Verona trip lets you do just that in luxurious, not to mention effortless, style. And with Lake Garda's proximity to the Dolomites , you can also take a trip to Italy's beautiful mountains during your stay.

EXPLORE THE DOLOMITES WITH GH

lake como or lake garda

In the region of Lombardy, Lake Como is known for its convenient proximity to Milan – around 25 miles north of the city. It's easy to reach the shores of Como from central Milan in around an hour and a half by car or under an hour by train. Driving from either of the city's airports – Linate or Malpensa – is equally speedy, as you'll find out on GH 's eight-day tour of Northern Italy's glorious gardens .

EXPLORE LAKE COMO WITH GH

When it comes to deciding between Lake Como or Lake Garda, you might ask yourself whether you want to spend your trip exploring charming towns, gazing at historic villas, cruising around on boat tours and relaxing on beaches. If the answer is yes, Lake Como might be the place for you. From Varenna to Bellagio and Como itself, there is seemingly no end of quaint towns to explore on the shores of this stunning lake.

lake como or lake garda

Of course, they are also wonderful viewed from the water itself, as are the ornate villas and palazzos that stand majestically on the shore. Luckily, there are plenty of boat trip options to allow for this, from group tours to sleek private rivas (for a full dose of dolce vita glamour). On GH 's tour , you'll discover the beauty of the Borromean Islands on a boat.

From Roman ruins to amusement parks, there's something for every traveller in Lake Garda. Starting in the norther end of the lake, which sits in Trentino, you can go windsurfing in Torbole, see the Varone waterfall and hike to Punta Larici for astonishing views – this is a truly action-packed area full of variety.

lake como or lake garda

Over on the eastern side of Lake Garda, things slow down a little; here, you can visit Malcesine, a pretty and colourful town filled with narrow lanes. But it's Sirmione on the western side of the lake that is perhaps most popular, with an intriguing medieval city centre and striking castle.

Anyone asking themselves Lake Como or Lake Garda might be helped by considering what time of year they want to travel. Both lakes offer lovely warm weather in the summer months, with the advantage of proximity to water meaning swimming is almost always possible. Lake Como is generally the most crowded in July and August, so visiting in May, June or September might be preferable for those seeking peace and privacy.

lake como or lake garda

Lake Garda tends to be less busy than Lake Como in the summer months, though it does get quite windy at other times during the year. If you're visiting in autumn or winter, you will want to pack some warm layers, especially if you plan on hiking or cycling, as it can get cool when temperatures drop.

Gorgeous gardens

Of course, for anyone keen on horticulture, spring is an incredible time to visit Lake Como or Lake Garda. The latter is home to huge parks and public gardens that bloom with life each year; highlights for those seeking floral displays include the gardens at Riva and Parco Giardino Sigurta , while Parco Faunistico is home to more than 200 animals from across the world. If you're not sure where to start, GH 's eight-day Lake Garda trip includes a full-day tour of the glorious landscapes.

lake como or lake garda

Lake Como is also rightfully regarded for its incredible gardens, from the formal landscaped beauty of the Borromean Islands to the grand, sprawling gardens that unfurl around the ornate palazzos that line the lake's shores. GH 's garden tour allows you to get the very best of this, including stops at the spectacular gardens of Villa Carlotta , the historic sights of Isola Bella and the invaluable insights of horticulturist Christine Walkden.

Wining and dining

Whether it's Lake Como or Lake Garda, fresh local produce is always on the menu – with a particular focus on, and flair for, lake fish caught the very same day as you eat it. In Garda, you might try bigoli, a traditional Venetian egg pasta, prepared with fresh sardines caught from the lake, or risotto with tench, a tender lake fish, or the rich plum hue of Amarone della Valpolicella.

lake como or lake garda

Similarly, in Como, traditional dishes include creamy risotto served with perch fish from the lake, or whitebait-like alborelle , fried and served simply with a sprinkle of salt and a squeeze of lemon. Both destinations have a range of restaurants, from charming and authentic osterias to more upscale fine dining spots – the best of which offer lake views, naturally.

  • Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces, and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit, and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
  • On the Italian Riviera, a taste of the region’s famous basil pesto is a must. Delicious seafood dishes are popular along the shore, but true Ligurians favor simple, traditional recipes like minestrone soup and farinata , an unleavened chickpea pancake.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias , small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello .
  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $8USD to $10USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.

Located on the Italian-Swiss border, the  city of Como in Italy  overlooks the southwest end of its  lake  and is surrounded by green ridge hills, resulting in unparalleled, natural scenery.

Como is home to some of the best attractions in the Lombardy region, and it is worth a visit even for a simple stroll through the streets of the city center. It is an ideal destination for those visiting Lake Como for a day and those staying longer .

Ready to hit the road? Here are what to do during your visit to Como and the best experiences you can have!

Como City, Italy, Lake Como

THE TOWN CENTER Perfect combination of architecture, history and culture

Como, Italy: Piazza Vittoria

Enclosed within imposing medieval walls – of which Porta Torre , overlooking Piazza Vittoria , is one of the most scenic gates – the Como’s city center is home to fascinating squares , each with its own personality.

Piazza Duomo, Cathedral and Broletto

The main square is Piazza Duomo , which houses the imposing Como Cathedral ( Duomo di Como ): an eclectic building, combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Duomo is open for visits on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on holidays from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Just between the cathedral and its bell tower is the Broletto , the former town hall that now often hosts art exhibitions and assemblies. It is a visually striking building, with a facade banded with Lombard marble in three different colors: white, gray and red.

Como, Italy: Piazza San Fedele and its church

Piazza San Fedele and its Basilica

Just a 3-minute walk from Piazza Duomo is Piazza San Fedele . This square, originally a grain market, is home to a beautiful Romanesque church dating back to 1120: the Basilica of San Fedele .

If you happen to pass by this little square on a Saturday, you will have the chance to come across numerous stalls, where you can find antiques and handicrafts .

Piazza Volta and Piazza Mazzini

If you arrive in Como at the San Giovanni station and head downtown, Piazza Volta will be the first square in the historic center you encounter (less than a 10-minute walk). Piazza Mazzini is the adjacent square.

These two squares are the center of Como’s nightlife . Among elegant Art Nouveau buildings and stores selling typical products are numerous restaurants, wine bars and pubs to satisfy all tastes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the nearby Via Vitani , one of the richest vestiges of the medieval city of Como that is home to historic trattorias and fine stores.

A WALK ALONG THE LAKEFRONT The best places to take pictures

Life Electric, Como

The historic center overlooks the lakefront with Piazza Cavour , where the office for purchasing boat tickets is located.

I recommend you go left, because the promenade leading to Como Lago station is under renovation and does not allow you to fully enjoy the experience. Here are a few attractions not to be missed on the lakefront!

Life Electric

As you walk along the lakefront you will see Life Electric , a monument by archistar Daniel Libeskind.

The  avant-garde work is located at the bottom of a small artificial dam (called Diga Foranea) and is a homage to the voltaic pile invented by Alessandro Volta .

Follow this Volta tour if you want to discover other places in the city of Como related to the scientist’s life!

Como, Italy: Volta museum

Lakeside gardens, Volta Museum & War memorial

Talking of Alessandro Volta, don’t miss the nearby Volta museum , which collects evidence of his work and even the  first version of the electric battery . The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The regular admission ticket costs €5.

Next to the museum is the garden area overlooking the lake , a popular place for tourists and locals, especially during the summer season. Festivals and musical or culinary events are often organized here.

This area is also home to the imposing War Memorial ( Monumento ai Caduti ), a 33-meter (108-foot) tall rationalist-style building dedicated to the 650 fallen Como soldiers of World War I. From the top of the monument there is a magnificent view of Lake Como and the city. It is usually possible to climb to the top of the monument on Sundays, but currently it is only possible to do so during specific occasions as the structure is undergoing restoration.

VILLA OLMO A neoclassical villa surrounded by a large park

Villa Olmo, Como

If you love historic villas , stroll along the romantic Passeggiata Lino Gelpi (which starts a few steps from the War Memorial) and reach the impressive Villa Olmo , a neoclassical building dating back to 1780.

The park is open daily from 7 am and closes at 11 pm in the summer season (early April to late September) and at 7 pm in the winter season (early October to late March).

Villa Olmo is also the starting point of a simple and beautiful walk among villas and botanical rarities : the Chilometro della Conoscenza .

A few tips for your stay in Como

BRUNATE & SPINA VERDE To admire the city of Como from above

Como Brunate cable car

The Como-Brunate funicular

Want to enjoy a  breathtaking view  of the city of Como? Visit  Brunate , a town that overlooks Como from the top of a hill 715 meters (about 2,345 ft) high.

The  Como-Brunate funicular – which runs from Piazza Alcide de Gasperi , very close to the Como Lago train station – will take you to Brunate in a few minutes (see timetables and fares ).

Once in Brunate, you can walk for about 20 minutes and reach the Volta Lighthouse ( Faro Voltiano) , that can be visited every day except non-holiday Wednesdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed in case of bad weather).

There have also been reports of inefficiencies in dealing with people with disabilities (particularly regarding the return to Como from Brunate). If you have special needs, I recommend that you contact the company in advance through its official website.

Amazing view of Como from Respaù hill

Spina Verde park

Spina Verde Park is a protected forest which covers an area of 1000 hectares (3.86 square miles). The park is located southwest of Como and collects many sites of panoramic, historical, and natural interest .

One of the most interesting attractions is the tower of Castello Baradello , which stands on a hill overlooking the center of Como. It is a military fortification built in the 6th century by the locals (who were under the Roman Empire) and later restored by Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor.

The easiest way to reach Castel Baradello is by following a path that starts from Piazza San Rocco and leads to the tower in about 30 minutes .

My friends at Slow Lake Como offer a very cool experience: a 3-hour tour that will give you exclusive access to the castle and also includes an aperitivo with wine and local products and breathtaking views of Lake Como. Find out about it here !

BOAT TOURS & BEACHES Sit back, relax and enjoy the view!

Private boat tours.

If you are looking for private boat tours from Como, here are some options that may be right for you!

Public boat tours

❗Looking for information about public boat service? Read my guide to boats and ferries on Lake Como !

Como’s main pier and ticket office are located in Lungo Lario Trento . Plan your trips on the  Navigazione Laghi website and, when possible, purchase tickets online to avoid standing in line under the sun. During the peak season the turnout at ticket offices can be indeed very high.

Public boat service is perfect if you are on a day trip and want to reach other towns such as Argegno ,  Bellagio ,  Tremezzina  or other towns of the lake.

Beaches in Como

If you want to relax on a beach, you can go to Lido Villa Olmo , a beach with two swimming pools and a bar that offers a beautiful view of Lake Como and the opposite coast.

Otherwise, on the opposite shore (at the end of Viale Geno) is the recently opened Lido Giulietta al Lago , which offers all the services you need for your day and often organizes events in its very popular bar and restaurant.
