Birmingham City's players are addressed by manager Lee Clark prior to their first training session.

As Birmingham City prepare to head to Marbella for pre-season training for the first time under Gary Rowett, we take a look back at last season when Lee Clark and his team spent a week at Foto Island in Cork.

As pre-season training camps go, Colin Tattum our Blues reporter at the time said this was a tour that had been serene for Birmingham City .

Take a look at the pictures and above, below you can read how we reported the tour at the time...

And the contrast to the time when they were last in the Fota Island resort, could not be greater.

In July 2011 , Chris Hughton brought a disparate band of players over to Ireland for a whistle-stop tour.

Hughton, having taken over the reins following Alex McLeish’s exit to Aston Villa, didn’t have any assistants with him.

Paul Trollope only arrived on the penultimate evening.

Some new players were trying to find their feet and integrate, others were disaffected after Premier League relegation and also knew they were on the selling block.

Barry Ferguson flew home early to complete a move to Blackpool; the likes of Ben Foster and Scott Dann knew they were heading out, following Craig Gardner, the first big money sale.

In the first training session, Marlon King limped off with a knee injury that put back his Blues debut until the end of September.

WATCH: See inside a Birmingham City training session - 9 videos from Colin Tattum

And Carson Yeung, of course, had a fortnight earlier been arrested on money laundering charges.

In short, Blues were in an uncertain mess. The atmosphere was taut and strained. There was so much that needed to be resolved, so much uncertainty surrounding the ownership, finances and the demands of the Championship and Europe were on the horizon. From chaos Hughton eventually managed to fashion some stability and order.

For Lee Clark , last year it was a case of putting things into place as well as the lack of finance had continued to bite.

After the heart-stopping last day of the season against Bolton, there was an overhaul of the squad staff, with nine players coming in after the exit or release of 11, plus eight loanees returning to their parent clubs.

And what had been vital for the manager and the good of the club was the speed of the turnaround. All the new boys settled in and there was a discernible air of solidarity and also a determined focus about the task ahead in the league.

Clark had worked them hard in training. Very hard.

But he also struck the right balance between graft, the technical side of things, and R&R, like golf, laser clay shooting and a players night out.

The return to Fota Island was been a harmonious one.
