Antarctica solo tours

Iceberg and boat in Antarctica

Antarctica is one of those destinations you can’t do alone…literally

If you're drawn into the icy wonders of the seventh continent and plan on traveling solo, you won't be able to visit entirely on your own (unless you're a humpback whale). But when we’re offering  Antarctica cruises  on well-equipped vessels (including a sauna and gym facilities) that promise the adventure of a lifetime, you’ll hardly mind sharing your expedition with a bunch of like-minded, penguin-loving travelers. Especially when your trip is full of daily shore excursions, animal spotting and breathtaking scenery. As far as Antarctica solo travel endeavours go, it doesn’t get much bigger than this.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Our  comfortable expedition ship  is big, but with one crew member for every eight travellers, you'll never be completely alone. From lounging in one of the ship's many recreational areas to taking a morning leader-led yoga class, there's plenty to keep you busy on your solo Antarctica travels.

Over 41% of our travellers to Antarctica are doin' it solo, so we've made our accommodation options as flexible as possible. From single cabin options to sharing with one of your shipmates, your rooming arrangement onboard is entirely up to you - just let us know at the time of booking.

One of the best things about solo travelling in a group to Antarctica is that you don't have to worry about organising any activities. Instead, bond with your newly-made buddies over daily excursions, including shore visits, polar plunges, wildlife spotting and onboard seminars. You know, the important stuff.

While our leaders might not call Antarctica their home (although there are people who live there), you can rest assured our experienced guides know what they’re talking about. With hundreds of polar voyages between them, you’re in the best hands possible. Not only are they ready to teach you about the region's history, geography and wildlife, but they’ll also answer your questions and snap photos of you  taking the polar plunge.

Antarctica is about as remote as it gets and with remoteness comes a whole different level of precautions. While you don’t have to worry about dodgy areas and pickpockets, there are other things you need to be aware of in order to remain safe on the seas. Our onboard experts will conduct a safety briefing at the beginning of your voyage and will be on hand to help you on and off Zodiacs during shore excursions (should you need it).

Not many people can say they’ve been to the seventh continent, but you and your trip mates sure can. There’s something about watching the world’s most remarkable scenery go by as you cruise the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula that bonds you for life. And that’s exactly what you’ll come away with; millions of photos, dozens of unforgettable experiences and plenty of forever friends.

There’s a whole heap of organizational planning that goes into running a trip of this magnitude, but you don’t have to worry about any of it. From loaning out expedition parkas to coordinating shore excursions, we take care of all the boring but necessary administration so all you have to do is climb aboard with some motion sickness medication and a healthy sense of adventure.

Journey to the Antarctic Circle (Ocean Endeavour)

I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?

Intrepid travelers  are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages generally range from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Will my mobile phone work in Antarctica?

Your mobile phone will not work during your Antarctica cruise as the continent is still considered extremely remote and doesn't have the right telecommunication infrastructure in place.

Do I need to take part in every activity?

An Antarctic voyage can be as active or as low-key as you want it to be. While a trip to Antarctica provides many opportunities to get off the ship, it’s up to you whether you want to venture further afield on a Zodiac boat or explore onshore. Some optional activities need to be booked before departing.

Is an Antarctica trip appropriate for solo female travellers?

While it might be remote, Antarctica is a safe destination to travel to as a solo female traveller, especially if you've booked a trip with us.

All of our Antarctic trips also have a low physical rating of one or two, which means they are accessible to people of all levels of fitness with no major mobility issues, and do not require any physical preparation. Activities onshore and excursions involve a bit of walking, but all are optional. You’ll be visiting sites where at times you may have to cross uneven ground and take on challenging conditions underfoot. You will have support stepping on and off the Zodiac boats.

Can I pay a single supplement and get my own room?

If you're travelling solo and would prefer not to be paired up with a fellow traveller to share a room, ask your booking consultant if the tour you’re interested in offers a 'single supplement' so that you can be allocated a room alone – this is subject to availability and an additional charge.

However, if you don't have a rooming preference, you'll be paired with another solo traveller of the same gender to bunk with. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll be happy to work with you to organise a rooming configuration that you feel comfortable with.

Are Intrepid’s Antarctic Circle cruises accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of their physical or mental limitations.

Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access on our polar vessels. Some ships have lifts, but these may not access all decks on the ship. There are often stairways, and passengers must be mobile enough to keep themselves steady and get around reasonably without assistance. We can help you to clarify further whether the trip you’re interested in is right for you.

However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travelling Solo To Antarctica: What To Expect

Travelling Solo To Antarctica: What To Expect

May 20th, 2020 / Burnham Arlidge

Travelling solo to Antarctica is an incredibly rewarding experience and one that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Antarctica is one of the last and most beautiful frontiers in the world. The frozen continent is home to picturesque landscapes, an abundance of marine life and offers an experience like no other.

Those who travel here have an opportunity to see a part of the world that most can only dream of. However, what happens when it is only on your bucket list and no one else's?

What is it like travelling solo to Antarctica?

Traveling on your own can be a daunting experience, especially when traveling to one of the most isolated places on the planet!

If you do choose to travel to Antarctica solo, you will be pleased to know that this a does not mean you will be alone.

Many of the activities such as kayaking trips , swimming (the polar plunge) and cross-country skiing are all done in groups. This gives you the golden opportunity to make friends who share the same interests as you throughout the cruise.

From the moment you board, you’ll form a strong bond with many like-minded individuals as you experience an incredible trip to Antarctica.

Look out for No Single Supplement Cruises

The number of solo travellers wishing to have a private cabin has been steadily increasing.

While it has long been a tradition to charge solo travellers a single supplement, there are many tour operators that now price cabins for single occupancy .

This means you can relish in the privacy of your cabin, without the heavy price tag. If you're in need of your own space, it’s worth keeping an eye out for these cruises.

There is also a high possibility that you won’t be the only solo traveller onboard too, with many tour operators now offering shared cabins with no single supplement fees.

While having a room to yourself has its benefits, sharing a cabin with one or two others of the same gender is an easy way to make new friends. You’ll soon be enjoying drinks at the bar together and exploring the beautiful landscape.

With a little research, you could save yourself quite a bit of money you could be spending on other aspects of your cruise.

Travelling Solo

Research, Expedition or Luxury Cruise?

The type of cruise ship you choose can play a significant role in forming your experience.

Luxury cruise ships are bigger, more spacious and have much wider range of facilities.

They can hold hundreds of travellers, and if you are travelling solo, it can be overwhelming with the sheer number of people. Plus, only 100 people can go ashore at one time, so your landings may be limited.

Solo travellers often opt for either an expedition or research cruise ship.

Both are generally smaller than luxury ships and hold between 50- 100 passengers, which can help you get to know your fellow travellers a little better!

The main difference between the expedition and research cruise ships is the facilities. Research ships only have basic facilities , whereas expedition ships still offer guests some of the added comforts such as full media lecture rooms, wellness centres and even a fully stocked library.

Dinner for one?

Many cruise ships have an ‘open seating’ policy for dinner and other events.

This means you can move around and chat with others as you please. You won’t be eating alone , and many people are extremely open and welcoming, especially when they find out you’re travelling by yourself!

An Antarctic Cruise to Remember

Travelling solo to Antarctica can definitely take you out of your comfort zone, although it can also be one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life.

Make sure you do your research and choose a cruise that is best suited for you.

Contact our Antarctica cruise experts if you would like more information on travelling solo.

Thank you and happy travels!

Solo travel to Antarctica

Why Go On An Antarctica Holiday?

Antarctica is not usually the destination you’ll see at the top of most people’s bucket list. As the most southern continent, Antarctica is not a destination that is that easily accessible to travellers. Being the coldest continent on Earth doesn’t really sell itself as a tourist destination.

There is no Antarctica city, just research stations with a tiny population and although Antarctica tourism is increasing Antarctica remains barely touched by it and is abundant in stunning scenery and wildlife. You can even Antarctica camp under the stars waking up to beautiful icebergs and spotting seals and penguins.

The majority of your time in Antarctica may be spent at sea as only a small number of people are permitted to land at any time so you may only be on the continent for a few hours each day. Sightseeing by air is an option when you arrive but it does cost a small fortune.

If you want to go somewhere that hardly any (or even none) of your family or friends have been, choose Antarctica. Visit between November to March when the midnight sun appears,

Solo travel to antarctica

See the active volcano in Antarctica – As one of the most untouched places on Earth, you may think that there's not much to do in Antarctica but amongst the Antarctica ice, this continent is also home to the world’s southernmost active volcano. Mount Erebus is an active volcano in Antarctica and is one of four volcanoes that form Ross Island.

Although it is not the highest, it is one of the most impressive. Observation Hill gives a great viewpoint of Mt. Erebus and with Antarctica thought to be one of the most volcanic regions in the world, there are still a number of undiscovered volcanoes below its frozen surfaces.

Spot the penguins – One of the best activities in Antarctica is spotting the animal life on Antarctica. The continent is home to thousands of chinstrap penguins (100,000 to be exact) which you can see at Baily Head and plenty of Emperor Penguins which you are guaranteed to see. You can also see penguins in the South Shetland Islands.

Whale watching – Whale watching is one of the adventures in Antarctica too. During the summer in Antarctica, you’ll find many whale species including Humpback, Minke and Orcas in the surrounding waters.

Bath in a hot spring – Deception Island is a volcanic island with a natural harbour and an active volcano. When you need some warmth head for the hot springs here. Seeing volcanic ash on top of ice glaciers is a very unique experience.

See the other cruise ships – Anver Island is where the cruise ships to Antarctica stop at Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay.

Take a helicopter ride – Once you get there, you could take a helicopter ride for an aerial view of Antarctica and an even more breathtaking view of icebergs, wildlife and volcanoes.

Send a postcard – If you’ve ever wanted to send a postcard from a cool destination, you can send one from the post box at Port Locker Museum. Although there are no Antarctica cities, this is one of the most popular Antarctic tourist attractions.

See the ‘Kodak Gap’ – Marvel at another of the tourist attractions in Antarctica; the sheer cliffs blocked by icebergs known as “Kodak Gap.” This spectacular landscape in the Lemaire Channel is one of the top places to visit in Antarctica.

Spot blue icebergs – See the blue icebergs at Harbour's Head that fall of the glacier and are a stunning blue hue. If you're there at the right time you may even see a seal or two!

See the buildings – From an abandoned whaling station on Deception Island to the red and black buildings at the Heritage site of Port Lockroy, the buildings are definitely worth seeing.

Scuba dive! – If you're feeling brave you can even scuba dive here, or if you prefer not to get wet then experience an Antarctica kayak amongst the beautiful landscape instead.

Take amazing photography – Antarctica is an ideal destination to test your photography skills. With so much wildlife and glaciers to photograph you'll be in your element.

Climb the highest peak – Vinson Massif is the highest peak on the continent.

See the Lenin bust – If you do get as far as the Southern pole of inaccessibility you'll see one of the tourist spots in Antarctica. A Lenin bust faces Moscow, but it is known as the hardest place to get to in the world.

Antarctica Tours From Australia –  Cruise ships depart from as far as Hobart and Bluff in Oceania. You can also depart from New Zealand but starting in Oceania can be more expensive as you have longer to reach the continent. Australia Antarctica tours can take you at least a week.

South America to Antarctica – This is the cheapest way to get to Antarctica due to the shorter distance between both continents. To get from   Ushuaia to Antarctica, c ruise ships depart from Punta Arenas in Chile and Ushuaia in Argentina. It may be worth looking at an Antarctica flight into one of these two destinations to start cruising Antarctica (or combine it with a South American trip).

Cruise Antarctica From South America

The only way to see this continent is on a cruise around Antarctica and if you can survive the seas you will be one of the lucky ones to have visited this breathtaking place. Drake Passage is the Antarctica crossing and is known as one of the world's roughest seas so take plenty of seasickness tablets if you suffer from travel sickness.

If you're unsure how to choose the best Antarctica cruise for you, Antarctica cruises range from smaller vessels with up to 100 passengers to those carrying over 1000 people and include guided hikes and sea kayaking. Choose from an expedition ship or a luxury ship. The smaller ships and Antarctica boats are generally able to get you closer to nature.

Sailboats offer voyages from South America where you can get involved and help support private expeditions. You need to allow more than one for a cruise but if you have longer, you can always combine your trip with the South Shetland Islands or the Falkland Islands; a British archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Solo travel to Antarctica

An Antarctica vacation isn't cheap after all this continent can be challenging to reach. It's not a backpacker's destination and can't really be done solo so you do need to pay for a trip to go there. It is expensive to visit but as a once in a lifetime experience it is definitely worth it. An Antarctica cruise cost starts from approximately $4,500 and can range up to more than $20,000.

The price really depends on what type of trip you are looking for. Maybe you want to have your own cabin or prefer more comfort. To keep the cost at the budget end you may find yourself sharing a cabin with another solo traveller.

You'll need to factor in extra expenses such as any activities that you may want to do and tips for your guide. One thing is for sure… visit Antarctica and you'll have memories of a lifetime.

Solo travel to antarctica

You need to allow more than one week for Antarctic cruising. Antarctica flights are only operated by private operators so you won't be able to take commercial flights to Antarctica (such as Latam for example).

2 Weeks: Argentina to Antarctica – Cruise from Ushuaia to Antarctica and embark across Antarctica through the Drake Passage, South Shetland Islands, Drake Passage, Ushuaia.

3 Weeks: Argentina/Falkland Islands/Antarctica – Montevideo, embark for the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Shetland Islands, Ushuaia.

Solo travel to Antarctica

There are several companies that offer tours of Antarctica. You may find that some can also book your flight for you too. Here are our recommended companies for an Antarctica tour:

G Adventures – Offer adventure tours in Antarctica and various trips to Antarctica from an 11 day Antarctica Classic from Ushuaia to Antarctica from £4599 to a 22 day trip including the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. Each of their adventures in Antarctica is guaranteed to be a small group and is not physically challenging.

Wherever you travel you need travel insurance but especially if you are planning a trip here. Taking part in adventure activities and being on a ship means that you need to be covered for medical cover at least.

True Traveller and World Nomads are two insurance companies which can cover travel to Antarctica. True Traveller is available to UK and European residents, and World Nomads is available to over 100 countries worldwide, including the USA and UK. For digital nomads, Safety Wing is a nomad insurance that covers people from all over the world.

All companies allow you to buy insurance when you are already on the road and offer different plans depending on your needs including additional adventure cover.

* Check insurance cover and prices for True Traveller

N.b. World Nomads provides travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance.

In 1959 the Antarctica treaty was signed to ensure that no one country would claim Antarctica country and this piece of land as their own. This was an important moment in Antarctica history and today the continent is home to research stations and wildlife.

But with so much in the news about climate change, you may be wondering how you can experience a visit here without the negative impacts of tourism in Antarctica.

Most tour companies have an expert on the region so a trip here will teach you more about the geology and the impact we are having including how ice is reducing. You’ll leave Antarctica wanting to change your environmental habits and reduce your impact.

Sustainable Tourism in Antarctica

  • Don’t feed the wildlife and if you are photographing them, don’t use your flash.
  • Listen to your guide about where you can go on shore excursions and don’t touch or step where you are advised not to.
  • If you are given special boots to wear, wear them to help protect the ecosystem.

A Solo Antarctica Experience

Going to Antarctica is a big financial investment but it is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You'll be talking about your Antarctica holidays for years to come but if you're still unsure about visiting this fascinating continent, you may be inspired by Chantelle who shares h er amazing Antarctica journey and her MS Expedition Antarctica experience.

What animal life in Antarctica can I see? When you cruise Antarctica you’ll likely see various species of penguins including the Emperor penguin (the largest penguins), and an Antarctica bird such as the albatross, gull and blue-eyed cormorant. The most spectacular wildlife here is the whales of which you can find the Antarctica orca, blue whale, humpback, and minke. Then there’s the fur seals and leopard seals too. Plenty of animal life!

Is there an airport in Antarctica? Yes, there are several airports but not for the public travelling to Antarctica. The closest Antarctica airport is Punta Arenas International Airport in Chile.

What is the Antarctica capital? There is no capital of Antarctica . There are only research stations of which McMurdo is one of the most visited and is more like a small city.

Is there an Antarctica hotel? Accommodation in Antarctica doesn’t really exist. Any holidays to Antarctica will involve sleeping on a ship or in a tent but that doesn't mean that you have to forgo comfort if you choose a luxury Antarctica cruise with cabins that are just like hotel rooms.

Can I tour Antarctica solo? Antarctica vacations aren’t really like other vacations. You can’t just book a flight and turn up in Antarctica. Traveling in Antarctica is only really possible via a travel company and a cruise.

How many tourists visit Antarctica each year? It’s estimated that approximately 35,000 tourists pay a visit to Antarctica every year. Of that number, 90% of tourists in Antarctica travel from Ushuaia in Argentina.

Can you visit Antarctica any time of year? No, because of the cold Antarctica climate, touring Antarctica is generally only possible from the end of October to the end of March. This is also the crossing through Drake’s Passage is calmer.

How much does an Antarctica trip cost? An Antarctica cruise price can cost anything from £5,000 for 11 days, whereas a luxury Antarctica cruise will set you back £12,000 for a 16-day cruise for more comfort. Hebridean Sky is a luxury-expedition boat.

Intrepid Antarctica trips range from £5381 for an 11-day trip seeing the best of Antarctica from Puntas Arenas to a 21-day trip costing £13,996 that incorporates Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. G Adventures Antarctica tours start from £5,199 for a 13 day Antarctica Classic in Depth tour to £12,899 for a 21 day Spirit of Shackleton tour including South Georgia and the Falklands.

Is it even possible for a woman to travel alone to Antarctica? Absolutely! I did so and I’m very proud that I’ve now traveled solo on all seven continents.

Now, I’m not talking about actually going to Antarctica completely alone, on a raft, without any support. That would be suicidal. The only people who get left alone in Antarctica are scientists, and they have extensive training and support to keep them safe. FYI: You are not a scientist.

I’m talking about booking a spot on an expedition cruise, like my voyage with Quark Expeditions, as a solo traveler. Something that quite a few women do. I think it’s a fantastic way to explore Antarctica — perhaps even the best way.

Antarctica Isn’t for Everyone

It’s one thing to convince a friend to come with you to New Orleans for the weekend — but Antarctica is a much tougher sell. It’s probably the most expensive trip you’ll ever do. You’ll need to buy gear. And it requires a long flight to Ushuaia, Argentina (or Punta Arenas, Chile, for fly-cruises). The two-day journey across the Drake can be extremely rough; while I lucked out with relatively smooth crossings on my trip, some of my friends spent their crossings with their head in the toilet.

And yes, it’s worth it. I always tell people that Antarctica is the best place I’ve ever been and the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.

But it’s a lot to ask for a casual traveler.

There’s a good chance that your usual travel buddy, or even your romantic partner, won’t be up for the trip. And that’s fine. If Antarctica is your dream trip, you shouldn’t wait for someone who wants to join you. You should go to Antarctica solo.

You Won’t Be the Only Solo Traveler

I met tons of solo female travelers in Antarctica! There were a lot more solo women than men. They came from Australia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, all over North America, and from every age range. Most were in their forties and fifties.

If you’re hesitant about traveling to Antarctica on your own because you’re afraid of being the only one, you can throw that theory out the window.

You Will Make Tons of Friends

I adore the friends I made in Antarctica.  When you share such a mind-bending experience, you’ll immediately bond with the people around you. I’ve kept closely in touch with lots of my Antarctica friends; I’ve met up with several of them since the trip and even hang out with one in New York on a regular basis!

Here’s why it’s easy to make friends in Antarctica:

Meals are at large communal tables. Tables are not assigned and most people tend to switch up their seating assignments, so you’ll get to know lots of different people this way.

As an introvert, it’s a bit tougher for me to start up conversations with strangers, but I found that the large tables led the most extraverted people to start the conversation and keep it going. And if you’re stumped for topics, you can always ask people about what they’ve seen that day!

There’s a good amount of downtime. With a two-day journey each way, a lot of us spent our time in the lounge, sipping tea and coffee and eating the seemingly endless supply of cookies. This was a good way to get to know people before we hit the seventh continent.

There are fun activities. The kayakers have their own little group throughout the trip, going out whenever possible. There could be other adventure activities throughout your trip, like hiking or snowshoeing. And there are activities on the boat as well, like trivia night and a barbecue out on the deck.

People like to party. Well, not everyone, but there is definitely a contingent hanging out in the bar every night. Walk in and grab yourself a glass of wine!

You Won’t Be Charged Extra for Traveling Solo

One thing that holds women back from going on a cruise solo is that they’ll have to pay an expensive single supplement. Most cruises are priced with couples in mind, but that doesn’t happen on an Antarctica expedition. An expedition is nothing like a regular cruise.

If you’re traveling alone to Antarctica, you can be assigned a roommate. On my trip, double and triple rooms were available and people were paired with roommates of the same sex.

I noticed that most of the solo female travelers tended to be paired up with people close in age. The 40- and 50-something solo female travelers tended to be grouped together. My own roommate, Leanne, was a few years older than me. I don’t know if that was intentional or not, but it was nice.

And if you want to pay more to have your own room, you can absolutely do that. (In fact, one of the solo female travelers on the trip, a woman from Hong Kong, showed up in Ushuaia at the last minute and snagged a single room at a discounted rate! There are a lot of last-minute deals on various expeditions.)

Please note that every company is different, but Quark and many other companies room solo travelers together.

Is Antarctica Safe?

One of the common misconceptions is that Antarctica is for extreme travelers only, marathoners and mountain climbers and the like. This couldn’t be less true. Antarctica is very safe, and not scary at all. A typical Antarctica expedition is not even a physically demanding trip.

The only requirement is that you be in reasonably good health — able to walk for an hour or so, climb into and out of the zodiacs, and climb the stairs of the gangway with regularity. Some of the older people on board struggled with the gangway stairs, but the crew was helpful to them.

Choosing to kayak in Antarctica is a much bigger physical commitment, as you’ll be kayaking for a few hours at a time whenever possible. You’ll need to know the basics of kayaking and how to perform a wet exit. (One person fell in during our trip.) Some other physical activities require a higher fitness level.

Kayaking in Antarctica: Everything You Need to Know

The crew takes such good care of you on Antarctica expeditions. Their goal is for you to be safe.

My one scary moment was on Deception Island, the final landing of our trip. A huge fur seal began to charge at me. All I did was lift my arms in an X and that was enough to stop him in his tracks. The crew had warned us of this ahead of time and we fended them off with ease.

One thing I’ll add is that Antarctica is not a place to take risks. Stay within the area the crew allows you to go. Dress properly (no stiletto-and-ballgown photo shoots). Don’t antagonize the wildlife. If you’re sick or injured, let a crew member know immediately.

Antarctica is Best Experienced Solo

What I loved most about Antarctica was feeling dwarfed by its nature. It made me feel so small and insignificant — and that was beautiful. I honestly feel like my trip to Antarctica rewired my brain. I’m not the same person I was when I got on the ship.

I’ll be chasing that feeling for the rest of my life.

Antarctica and the Traveler’s Ego

And the truth is that if you’re constantly spending your trip by someone’s side, you’re not going to have that same experience.

Even if you’re traveling with a friend or partner, take time to experience Antarctica alone. Go for a walk on your own. Spend time watching the penguins play in the water. Admire the beauty without snapping photos. Breathe in the frigid air and just take it in.

What to Pack for A Solo Trip to Antarctica

Antarctica is one trip where you need to pack carefully — you can’t exactly pop over to the mall if you forget something. The Quark Expeditions ship did have a boutique on board, which was extremely helpful, but it’s better to be prepared.

Here are the most important items to pack:

  • The absolute best waterproof mittens or gloves you can find ( I used these )
  • Hot Hands Hand Warmers (for both hands and feet, and never directly on your skin)
  • Glove liners and sock liners, as well as thick socks
  • Base layers, top and bottom
  • Waterproof pants (preferably a bright color, as everyone wears black and it’s nice to be recognizable)
  • Buff or neck protector, along with headgear of your choice
  • Bathing suit (for the polar plunge!)
  • Dry bag for your camera
  • Seasickness medication (I got a prescription scopolamine patch, but after a few days it caused blurred vision; I switched to meclazine , a.k.a. Dramamine, for the crossing back)

Antarctica Packing List for Women

Check In with Someone at Home

One of my top travel tips for solo travelers is to stay in touch with someone at home. It’s always a good idea to have someone who knows your itinerary and can check up on you. You can see the rest of my top tips for solo female travelers here.

That’s not so easy at the bottom of the world. But many expedition ships have satellite internet connections. The internet on board our ship was grotesquely expensive ($100 for 100 MB), but there was a much cheaper package for email only.

I chose to pay the one-time $35 fee to have “ship wifi” — a new email address that only worked on the ship. This was the best case scenario because it allowed me to send “I’m alive” messages to my loved ones without getting sucked into my usual inbox. If your ship offers this option, I highly recommend taking it.

Other than that, I recommend staying off the internet. A digital detox does amazing things for your brain.

And a Word on Antarctica Romances…

Yes, romance can happen on an Antarctica expedition. I saw some things and heard some more things. YOU GUYS GOT UP TO SOME SHIT ON THAT TRIP. (And believe me, the most salacious Antarctica romances occurred in the 50+ set.)

Definitely don’t go on this trip with the intention of finding someone; there are a lot less expensive ways to do that. And if you’re clearly on the prowl, people will notice. (I’m talking to you, lady of a certain age hitting on a different man of a certain age every night.)

But hey…you never know. A lot of people metaphorically go to the ends of the Earth to find love — maybe you have to do it literally!

Essential Info: I traveled to Antarctica on Quark Expeditions ‘ Crossing the Circle: Southern Expedition in March 2018. The 2019 voyage starts at $8,995. The kayaking supplement is $995, which includes kayaking throughout the voyage, but starting Quark is now offering one-day “paddling excursions” that are better suited for people with less experience who don’t want to kayak every day. Quark often has sales — I recommend following them on Facebook and checking out their website. Additionally, some people can get deals by flying down to Ushuaia and jumping on a last-minute discounted trip — though this is risky! You never know what will be available. If you’re looking to kayak, book as early as possible, as kayaking slots are limited and sell out quickly. While Quark has Antarctica-specific evacuation coverage for emergencies, you need to have your own travel insurance as well. For my trip to Antarctica, I used World Nomads , which I highly recommend for both Antarctica and elsewhere.

This post is brought to you by Quark Expeditions , who hosted me in full on this trip and covered most of my expenses including the full cost of the expedition, kayaking supplement, two nights’ accommodation in Ushuaia, and round-trip airfare from New York. I paid for all incidentals, staff gratuities, gear excluding the Quark parka, and all expenses in Ushuaia excluding the hotel. All opinions, as always, are my own.

How to Visit Antarctica

From how to get there to what to pack, here's what you need to know about visiting Antarctica.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

antarctica trips for singles

There is at least one place left on earth where you really can disconnect: Antarctica.

There is no mobile phone service. There are no town squares, no restaurants, and no tourist traps. The local "airports" are really just ice or gravel landing strips.

Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia and mostly covered with a thick sheet of ice. It's one of the most remote destinations in the world and the trip of a lifetime for many travelers. It's also easier to travel to Antarctica than one might think.

Lars-Eric Lindblad first took a group of 57 visitors to Antarctica in 1966. "At that time it was more or less like accomplishing a moon landing," his son Sven-Olof Lindblad said. "In those days, we were not as prepared as we are now. There were no satellite ice charts. You were not that different navigationally from the early explorers."

Even now it can be hard to really understand Antarctica. It is the coldest and windiest place on earth and, by some measures, the driest. It has no currency of its own. It is a desert with no trees, no bushes, and no permanent residents. More meteorites are found in Antarctica than in any other place in the world.

Antarctica Beauty

"Antarctica is about the wildest place you can go on the planet," Lindblad said.

It's also an increasingly popular place to visit. According to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators , tourism more than doubled from 2010 to 2020.

"The conversation around climate change has elevated people's interest and created a sense of urgency," Lindblad said.

The Best Times to Go to Antarctica

The Antarctic travel season lasts from November through March, the Antarctic summer. Temperatures are often below freezing at this time of year, especially in the continent's interior, but they can reach as high as 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The best time for penguin spotting is late December or early January. Wait too long and previously pristine penguin colonies get dirty and smelly, said Nik Horncastle , a regional specialist with Audley Travel. For peak whale watching, try February or March.

Other activities, including snowshoeing, kayaking, skiing, camping, snorkeling, diving, and visits to historic sites from earlier expeditions, can be experienced throughout the season.

How to Get to Antarctica

One of the more common routes to Antarctica is by ship via Ushuaia, a city at the southern tip of Argentina. Several companies, including Hurtigruten Expeditions , Quark Expeditions , and Lindblad's namesake Lindblad Expeditions , specialize in Antarctic and polar cruising, offering journeys that range in length from just over a week to a full month and beyond.

On board, expect to mingle with scientists, naturalists, historians, and underwater specialists. "The onboard experience is a conversation around where you are and what does this place mean," Lindblad said. Internet service via satellite is available but comes with a hefty price tag.

Antarctica is one place where smaller boats offer a big advantage. "We don't recommend a boat over 200 people," Horncastle said. "Big boats can only stop at a few sites."

That said, if you want to visit Antarctica on a traditional cruise line, many major carriers can get you there — often on vessels that adhere to that fewer-than-200-guests rule of thumb. Some more affordable lines, like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean , stick to "cruise-only" itineraries, which sail along the Antarctic coast (and offer great views in the process) but don't allow disembarkation on the continent. A number of others, though, from Viking Cruises and Disney Cruise Line to Ponant and Silversea , take passengers right into the Antarctic interior, thanks to on-shore excursions and ships with icebreaker capabilities.

Booking an Antarctica Expedition

Expect to spend between $6,000 and $50,000 to visit Antarctica, depending on the length of the trip and the level of luxury you seek.

"It's an expensive trip," Horncastle said — but there are options if you're traveling on a budget.

Intrepid Travel and G Adventures both specialize in affordable trips to Antarctica, and neither requires single supplements for solo travelers. If you don't feel the need to set foot on the continent, you can also opt for a sightseeing flight. These flights, which cut costs by flying over Antarctica without stopping there, are available from most major cities in Australia at prices that start around $1,200 per person.

To both fly over and step onto the continent, Antarctica21 combines a two-hour flight from Chile with cruises that passengers can board in Antarctica. While this option doesn't give visitors the chance to cruise the famous Drake Passage, it does save time and minimize the risk of seasickness.

"The Drake Passage is a crossing full of unpredictable conditions," said Antarctica21's Francesco Contini. "When the crossing is rough, passengers tend to be not very comfortable."

Antarctica Travel Guide

Ushuaia airport & transportation, antarctica fly + cruise, best time of year to travel to antarctica, antarctica weather.

  • November: This is when tourism to Antarctica begins to kick off. Days start to lengthen, and sea ice retreats, marking the Antarctic "spring" in full force. While temperatures are still chilly, it's a great time for those seeking pristine landscapes and wildlife, including penguin mating rituals and seals having pups. Skiers and snowshoers will find ideal conditions in November and early December
  • December: Among the most popular months for visiting, December offers optimal weather, long days, and access to stunning scenery and wildlife. It includes the austral summer solstice, providing extended daylight and relatively warmer temperatures. Penguin hatchlings and chicks are a highlight, and it's a great time for various activities, including kayaking and camping.
  • January: Another prime month for tourism, January features ideal weather conditions, long daylight hours, and extensive access to the mainland and coastline. Temperatures are at their warmest, and there's an abundance of wildlife to observe, including penguins and increasing numbers of whales.
  • February: Although tourist numbers start to decline from the December/January peak, February continues to offer fine weather. Daylight remains ample, and sea ice is at its yearly minimum, allowing for deeper exploration into the Antarctic wilderness. Whale-watching is particularly rewarding during this time. Scuba divers may prefer mid-December through mid-February
  • March: The tail-end of the austral summer provides less-crowded sightseeing opportunities, minimal sea ice, and the chance to experience the "Antarctic fall." While temperatures cool off, March offers lower cruise prices, clearer waters for diving, and unique wildlife experiences, such as leopard seals hunting penguin chicks.
  • Don't introduce any non-native species that could become invasive species.
  • Always listen to your guides and the ship's crew while on day-trips.
  • Make sure to observe animals from a safe distance and never try to touch them (at least 15 feet is a good recommendation).
  • Don't feed any animals.
  • Stay on designated walking paths.
  • Allow animals enough space to make their own navigation decisions.
  • Do not surround any animal or go between baby animals and their mothers.

What's it like on an Antarctic Cruise?

A Typical Day on an Antarctica Cruise

Expeditions to the south pole, south pole expeditions.

  • The cruising season in the Arctic is from May to September, while in Antarctica it runs from November through March.
  • While temperatures in Antarctica can be more extreme than in the Arctic, the cruising season tends to stay between 20-30 degree Fahrenheit, with plenty of sunny days (sometimes with 24 hours of sunlight each day).
  • A trip through the Arctic might bring you through any of the following countries: Canada, the US, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Finland. Longer comprehensive cruises might do the whole Northwest Passage or cruise almost all of the Arctic Circle. Cruises board either in Scandinavia, Russia, or Canada.
  • Antarctica trips either start in Ushuaia, Argentina for cruises or Punta Arenas for the fly cruises over the Drake Passage .
  • Polar bears or Penguins - While penguins are so prolific in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean that the idea of not seeing hundreds on your cruise seems absurd, the polar bears of the Arctic can be much harder to spot (though some feel that they are more majestic and rewarding when you do spot them). NOTE: Polar bears live in the Arctic and penguins live in the southern hemisphere, so there is nowhere (other than perhaps a zoo) where you will see them both living in their natural habitat on the same trip.
  • Wildlife in Antarctica features more whales and many different types of seals.
  • Active travelers might prefer Antarctica for the chances to do activities like camping, kayaking, mountaineering, cross-country skiing, paddleboarding or scuba diving, which aren't included on Arctic tours for safety reasons.
  • Ice vs. Land: Antarctica is aptly named the White Continent because its landmass is almost entirely permanently frozen ice and glaciers with towering rocky mountains, while the Arctic Circle goes through a summer season of lush vegetation when its icy coat melts away.

  • Rockhopper Penguins  - get their name because they are found jumping from jagged rock to rock instead of waddling like most penguins.
  • Chinstrap Penguins - are easily distinguishable by their black chinstrap, which makes it look like they're wearing a bicycle helmet!
  • Gentoo Penguins  - are related to the Adelie and Chinstraps, and perhaps the speediest of the penguins in the water.
  • Macaroni Penguins - with their distinctive spikey orange crests, are perhaps the world's most abundant penguin species, though they only visit Antarctica part of the year.

Information : Antarctic travel basics | more travel details | fly to Antarctica | FAQ's | Request Contact | clothing | boots Regions :   Antarctic Peninsula | South Georgia | South Shetland Islands | Falkland Islands - Arctic

Cabins on Antarctic cruise ships are usually doubles with a smaller number of triples and quads, how are solo travellers accommodated?

There are two options:.

1 - Share a cabin with another same gender solo traveller, in these cases there is obviously no supplement due and you will most likely make a new friend in the process.

2 - Pay a supplement to stay alone in a double cabin, the cost of this varies but becomes a greater proportion of the full occupancy as the standard of the cabin goes up. Expect to pay 1.5 - 2 x the single rate to occupy a double cabin alone.

What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises - Best Overall Value

What we like most:.

  • Wide range of trips
  • Luxurious suites
  • Excellent customer service
  • Risk-free guarantee

Cost: $799+ per person

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers a risk-free guarantee for guests, allowing you to change your cruise date up to 14 days before your departure. Viking will also waive any change fees. Other features of this cruise include spacious veranda staterooms and suites. In addition to a variety of destinations, Viking Ocean Cruises offers special savings on both airfare and cruise costs.

FYI: Cruises aren’t the only way to meet that special someone. Consider trying one of the best dating websites for seniors .

2. Singles Travel International - Made for Singles

  • Made specifically for singles
  • Worldwide destinations
  • Meet-and-greets onboard
  • Online community

Cost: $7,173 average, but ranges from $2,398 to $14,779

With affordable (comparatively speaking) cruises starting at $2,398 per person, Singles Travel International is a tour agency that offers fun cruise destination trips for single seniors over the age of 50. With several destination options ranging from Antarctica, Africa, and South America, seniors can enjoy a fun solo getaway at affordable prices.

With over 28 years in business, Singles Travel International offers great savings on single supplements, free membership, and fun singles cruise meet-and-greets and cocktail hours. Other benefits include an option to find a travel companion and ongoing promotions and discounts.  For example, when I was booking my trip, I could’ve saved thousands by getting a premium membership. This is a good option if you think you want to take cruises more regularly.

Plus, when I signed up for a free membership, I got a $50 discount on my first vacation and free access to its online community for senior singles over the age of 50.

3. Silversea - Luxurious and All-Inclusive

  • Made specifically for seniors
  • Generous all-inclusive options
  • Onboard spas and fitness centers
  • Gourmet dining

Cost: $3,600+ per person

If you’re looking to pamper yourself with a luxury cruise, Silversea provides amazing shore excursions and all-inclusive service covering 900 destinations. Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

Tauck World Discovery

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. Consider booking a solo trip on one of its European River Cruises, with prices starting at $4,390 per person for eight- to 25-day tours. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

Holland America Line

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

Pro Tip: To start planning your next trip, be sure to check out my rundown of the best travel destinations for seniors .

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises - Discounts Available

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

  • Over 450 ports
  • Great discounts
  • Spacious accommodations
  • Tours up to 21 days in length

Cost: $6,074+ per person

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers all-inclusive luxury travel around the world, with over 450 ports of call. Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Some of the benefits of choosing a cruise from Regent Seven Seas Cruises include all-inclusive fares, free open bars, and unlimited beverages, along with free access to specialty restaurants. You’ll also receive free unlimited internet and up to a 50 percent discount for a reduced single supplement for select suite categories.

Bottom Line

If you’re single and want to meet new people, a cruise can be a great way to step out of your comfort zone. Many cruises cater to solo travelers and single seniors, providing ample opportunities to participate in mixers, galas, and other activities aboard a ship. Many cruise lines will often offer great discounts for those who book one-passenger trips, so be on the lookout for those deals throughout the year.

Five great day trips from St Petersburg

A single trip is nowhere near enough to truly appreciate the splendour of St Petersburg. But even a first-time visitor should consider a quick escape from Russia’s imperial capital to nearby parks, palaces and medieval towns that are very much a part of its cultural circle. Easily visited by car, public transport or tourist bus, the following destinations never fail to impress with their history and grandeur.

The opulent baroque-style summer palace of Catherine the Great in Pushkin (Tsarskoe Selo) © Anna Pakutina / Shutterstock

Feel like a royal in Pushkin

Every Russian child learns the tale of how young Alexander Pushkin – the country’s most celebrated poet – got really noticed by reading his own verses to renowned poet Gavriil Derzhavin at the lyceum in Tsarskoe Selo (‘King’s Village’). That lyceum is now a museum and one of the popular attractions in the city of Pushkin. Another one is the classical  Alexander Palace , where the last Russian royals, the Romanov family, lived until their tragic end during the Russian revolution of 1917. But the most famous sight here is, no doubt, Empress Catherine the Great’s baroque  palace , designed by Rastrelli and home to the world-famous Amber Room, which was stolen by the Nazis and reconstructed from scratch by Russian experts in the late 20th century.

Getting there: From St Petersburg’s Moskovskaya metro station, catch  marshrutky (minibuses) 286, 299, 342 or K545 (30 minutes) to Pushkin. Suburban trains run from Vitebsky vokzal (but they’re infrequent except for the weekends); get off at Detskoe Selo station (30 minutes) from where  marshrutky  frequently run to Tsarskoe Selo.

Stroll the palatial park in Pavlovsk

If it was up to an introvert to build their luscious summer residence, the result might well be the glorious  Pavlovsk Great Palace . Once a residence of Emperor Paul I, and in the old days set deep in the woods, the palace is even today surrounded by the dense greenery known as Pavlovsk Park . You can stroll in and wander off, down one of the geometrical alleys or right through the bushes. It’s a wonderful walk, which – one way or another – will take you to a chain of ponds and the stone steps guarded by lion statues, or through a beautiful alleyway, once the official route for royal carriages. The palace itself is now a museum worth exploring, from its grand Halls of War and Peace to private royal suites.

Getting there: Trains and marshrutky  running from St Petersburg to Pushkin continue to Pavlovsk. Marshrutky  frequently shuttle between Pushkin and Pavlovsk; catch one near the southeast corner of Catherine Park, and get off in front of Pavlovsk’s palace. The travel time is about 15 minutes.

Admire the fountain symphony of Peterhof

Visitors will inevitably come upon a patch of wet stones in the lower park of Peterhof, with crowds treading over the stones carefully, trying to see which particular movement activated the sudden rush of water. The famous trick fountain was designed to amuse unsuspecting guests of Peter the Great’s palace complex. You can start exploring the park from the harbour – if you come by hydrofoil – or the royal palace set on the park’s highest point. Admire the magnificent fountains scattered across the park, including the gilded ensemble of the  Grand Cascade , stroll down the glittering mirrored halls and art-filled galleries of the Grand Palace , or visit the more humble wood-panelled dwellings of Peter the Great known as the  Monplaisir . Marvel at the size of his ‘penalty cup’ (he would fill it with vodka and make late party guests drink to the bottom, or so the story goes).

Getting there: Marshrutky  300, 424 and 424A leave from outside the Avtovo metro station in St Petersburg. A suburban train (40 minutes) goes from Baltiysky vokzal to Novy Peterhof, from where you can walk (around 30 minutes). From May to September, the Peterhof Express hydrofoil (30 to 40 minutes) departs from the jetty in front of the Admiralty in St Petersburg every 15 minutes; you arrive right in front of the palace.

The grand interior of the neo-Byzantine Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas in Kronshtadt © Volkova Natalia / Shutterstock

Feel Russia’s naval might in Kronshtadt

The small port town of Kronshtadt – located on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland – has been a major Russian naval base ever since the rule of Peter the Great. It features a fortress built on the tsar’s orders, the huge neo-Byzantine Naval Cathedral  (with an eternal flame for Kronshtadt’s sailors) and numerous forts, canals and monuments. For a truly unique attraction, check out the circular cast-iron pavement at Yakornaya square, the only one of its kind in the world. In summer months, you can take a boat tour around the bay and visit several forts around the island. There’s another perk: you can return to St Petersburg via hydrofoil, which will deliver you straight to the Hermitage.

Getting there: Catch bus 101 (40 minutes) to Kronshtadt from Staraya Derevnya metro station in St Petersburg. Alternatively, take marshrutka 405 (40 minutes) from Chyornaya Rechka station.

The medieval Vyborg Castle with whitewashed St Olaf's Tower, set on an islet in Vyborg Bay © Ksenia Elzes / Lonely Planet

Live out medieval fantasies in Vyborg

Only 30km from the Finnish border, the town of  Vyborg  passed back and forth between the two countries throughout history. The well-preserved medieval Vyborg Castle is home to an annual festival held at the end of May – a great time to visit if you’re into historic re-enactments, sword fights, arts and crafts and period costumes. Its whitewashed St Olaf’s Tower provides a lovely view over the city. Wandering around the town, you can admire some fine Finnish architecture, including the iconic  Alvar Aalto Library . Stroll through the stunning, historic Park Monrepo , and don’t miss the Hermitage Vyborg  museum, which hosts themed exhibitions curated from the Hermitage collection.

Getting there: Hourly  elektrichki  trains (two hours and 30 minutes) leave from St Petersburg’s Finlyandsky vokzal. Buses run every 20 minutes from Parnas metro station in St Petersburg; the travel time is similar.
