Every stop. Was memorable.

Mystical Ireland - 8 Days/7 Nights

All expectations were exceeded.

Alfred Joseph Wozniak

Sites visited were amazing, tour guide exceptional and the food was excellent. Needed more free time to rest. My wife and are in our seventies.

The country was beautiful. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable. I loved the Cliffs of Moher, the Giant Causeway and Belfast

Mrs. Holly Engelhardt

Mystical ireland - 8 days/7 nights-would visit again in a heartbeat - worth the cost for a tour guide.

The accommodations were lovely and the transportation was comfortable and clean. The only negative mark I would make (which is such a small detail that it's not worth taking off a star), was our stay in Westport. That town is a tourist town that enjoys a lot of money from tours. Literally the ONLY less-than-friendly person we encountered during the entire trip was a shop owner in this little town. The rest of it was great! The hotels were all clean and gave us plenty of room to stretch. Additionally, they were all located in areas central to a lot of activity, so during down times, we still had plenty to do. The coach was large and our tour wasn't full, so we had plenty of room to move around. We were given a lot of opportunities for breaks and opportunities to stretch and check out some local sights.

Magical Southern Ireland Tour Itinerary

The-Ultimate-Tour-of-Ireland-Unique-Experiences-Off-the-Beaten-Path

Day 1: From Dublin to Tipperary, Cork, and Kinsale

Total driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Leave Dublin’s bright lights behind and start your epic journey across the magical south of Ireland!

The first stop is the Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s most spectacular ancient sites.

Discover the medieval round tower, cathedral, castle, and chapel, all of which are steeped in 1,000 years of history.

This first castle experience will truly blow you away!

The adventure continues as we travel south to Cork, one of Europe’s most vibrant cities and Ireland’s second largest.

And remember, the local Corkonians claim their city is Ireland’s TRUE capital!

Of course, when in County Cork, you have to kiss the Blarney Stone. How else will you get the “gift of the gab”?

There’s also plenty of time to wander around Blarney Castle and its beautiful gardens — the perfect way to work up an appetite for a delicious local lunch.

This eventful first day closes with an overnight stay in Kinsale, a gorgeous harbour town in West Cork.

Kinsale is equally famous for its dramatic landscapes and award-winning restaurants. This is a true paradise for lovers of seafood!

Our local friend Barry will show you around the town’s forts, castles, shops, and galleries.

Day 2: From Kinsale to Kenmare, Killarney National Park, and Dingle

Total Driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

After leaving Kinsale, we head toward one of Ireland’s most famous driving routes — the Ring of Kerry. (For the complete Ring of Kerry experience, see our Ireland to Island Tour).

Killarney National Park, our country’s first-ever national park, awaits! This special place includes stops at breathtaking overlooks like Ladies’ View and Molls’ Gap.

You will then enjoy a guided tour of Ross Castle. Your expert guide will bring the castle’s legends to life, helping you to imagine what life was like behind the imposing stone walls.

This amazing second day finishes in the cosy, celebrated coastal town of Dingle.

You’re free to spend the evening soaking up Dingle’s famous atmosphere, be it in a stellar restaurant, a quirky pub, or a traditional live music session.

Day 3: From Dingle to Slea Head

Total driving time: 2 hours, excluding stops

The morning of day three gets off to a special start with an optional kayaking adventure in Dingle Bay.

You can view the wild and rugged coastline from a new perspective and explore the nearby sea caves.

Is kayaking not your thing? Not to worry. We also provide a morning walk to Eask Tower, a solid stone monument standing atop Carhoo Hill.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the rolling blue Atlantic Ocean and the lush greenery of the Dingle Peninsula.

If you’d prefer to indulge in some retail therapy, you’re free to take some time for yourself to explore the charming local shops. It’s your holiday, so you can do it your way!

In the afternoon, head out on a trip along the incredible Slea Head Drive with a local expert guide.

Some of the amazing sights you can expect to see are beehive huts, beautiful harbours, and quintessential Irish landscapes — perfect for those important Instagram photos!

We then return to Dingle for a second night, so you can find even more great spots for fun and food. And best of all, there’s no need to re-pack your bags!

Day 4: From Dingle to County Clare

Your magical southern experience continues as we depart Dingle. Travelling north, soak in the jaw-dropping views of Connor Pass and Castlegregory.

We then stop off to watch a traditional sheepdog demonstration. The skill of the farmer and his furry friend consistently leaves our guests in awe.

This one-of-a-kind experience is easily one of the most popular on the tour.

Next, we board a ferry for the short ride to County Clare, home of the world-famous Cliffs of Moher.

We also visit the otherworldly landscapes of the Burren National Park, one of Ireland’s most unique and underrated attractions.

The only way to understand the grandeur and beauty of the Cliffs of Moher, and why they have captured imaginations for centuries, is to see them in person.

A guided hike, complete with the sound of the roaring Wild Atlantic below, is the perfect way to do this.

Your Overland Ireland guide is a local expert, so they take you off the beaten track, pointing out secret passages the average tourist simply won’t know about.

When you post your unfiltered photos from this natural wonder, your Insta followers will be green with envy.

We overnight in Doolin, the home of traditional Irish music, so get your dancing shoes on!

This most welcoming of quaint villages has lively bars scattered throughout, so you’re in for a treat.

Day 5: From Doolin to Galway

The final day of this adventure through the south of Ireland begins with a journey to Galway.

The drive takes us through Burren National Park, so you can enjoy even more spectacular views.

Our route to Galway includes a stop at the visually striking Poulnabrone Dolmen, an unusually large portal tomb.

You will also have a photo opportunity at Dunguaire Castle, a 16th-century tower house in Kinvara, a charming fishing village.

Finally, we glide into Galway, the cultural capital of Ireland. Here, you join our local friends for the Walkin’ Talkin’ Tastin’ tour of Galway!

Tasting locally distilled gin, trying authentic Irish cuisine, and getting a local’s insight into the city’s culture and history — there’s no better way to discover Galway!

Fun and entertainment are easy to find in this artistic haven. The picturesque medieval streets are alive with street entertainers, performers, and musicians.

Visit the shops and restaurants that now occupy the beautiful historic buildings in the city centre.

There’s no better time to try on a Galway shawl or to see how a Claddagh ring looks on you.

And when you have finished shopping, pass through the Spanish Arch and continue to Claddagh, a wonderful fishing village.

After basking in the treasures of Galway, it’s time to head back to Dublin. If needed, your guide will help to arrange coach transportation back to the capital.

But, of course, you’re more than welcome to continue your adventure in any way you want!

Due to our tours’ off-the-beaten-path locations, the size of our vehicles, and the fact that we cannot guarantee that all accommodation partners have ramps/elevators, unfortunately, our tours are not wheelchair accessible .

The best mythological sites to visit in Ireland

You can experience ireland's famous myths and legends up close and personal at these fantastic sites..

The Rock of Cashel is just one of the many historic and mythological sites you can visit in Ireland.

What better way to explore Ireland than journeying through the sites associated with Irish myths and legends?

Ireland is a land rich with mystery and myth, intriguing sites, and Irish stories - and we're not just talking leprechauns and pots of gold!

From the ancient seat of the Celtic High Kings to the Mountain of the Witch; from the Celtic severed head ritual to the warrior Queen Maeve’s tomb, there are countless Irish mystical sites waiting to be explored, all of which have tales of pagan Celtic warriors, fairies, and magic associated with them.

Here, we take you through a tour of some of Ireland’s most magical mythological sites:

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 1: The Boyne Valley: Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Hill of Tara & Hill of Slane, Co. Meath

Brú na Bóinne (the Boyne Palace) spreads over Counties Meath and Louth. The Boyne Palace contains some of the most important historic sites and monuments in Ireland, including the massive, ancient passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth, the pagan headquarters of the Hill of Tara and the legendary Hill of Slane.

The Main Attraction: Newgrange

Sunrise over Newgrange (Ireland's Content Pool)

Sunrise over Newgrange (Ireland's Content Pool)

Newgrange is Ireland's most famous prehistoric site. As with most of the passage tombs in Ireland, archeologists believe that it was built around 3200 B.C., which means that Newgrange predates the construction of Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Egypt.

Newgrange was built so that during the winter solstice (dawn on the shortest day of the year), a narrow beam of sunlight illuminates the floor of the chamber at the end of the long passageway for about 17 minutes.

The Celtic myth says that Newgrange is a fairy mound or a sidh . A group of ancient people, the Tuatha Dé Danann , or “people of the goddess Danu,” dwelled there. Newgrange was built by the god Dagda and named for the goddess Boann.

Sign up to IrishCentral's newsletter to stay up-to-date with everything Irish!

Some say that the famous Irish mythological hero Cuchulainn was conceived in Newgrange.

Access to Newgrange begins at a visitors' center, from where you can take a guided tour of the site. The center hosts a re-enactment of the winter solstice at Newgrange through the use of electric lights situated within the tomb. A lottery is held annually for tickets to be allowed into the tomb during the actual event.

Knowth (Ireland's Content Pool)

Knowth (Ireland's Content Pool)

The Great Mound at Knowth is the second of the three major passage tombs in the Boyne Valley. Built over 5,000 years ago, the mound is younger than Newgrange but older than Dowth. Knowth is similar in size to Newgrange.

The mound has two passages (unlike Newgrange, which has one), with entrances on the east and west sides. Recent scientific data suggests Knowth had a lunar function when it came to ancient rituals.

Knowth is best known for its impressively large collection of stones carved with Neolithic art, which comprises a quarter of all known Neolithic art in Europe.

It is said that a noblewoman named Bua is buried at Knowth, and a “great hill” was built up over her, creating the Great Mound at Knowth.

You can access the Knowth site through a guided tour from the Brú na Bóinne Center.

Dowth (Ireland's Content Pool)

Dowth (Ireland's Content Pool)

The third passage tomb site in the Boyne Valley is Dowth, or the “Fairy Mound of Darkness” (sounds appealing, eh?). It is similar in size to Newgrange and Knowth, and like the two complexes was built 5,000 years ago.

The Dowth mound has two small passages, both located on the western side. Like Newgrange, the southernmost passage of Dowth is aligned to the setting sun of the winter solstice.

Dowth is not included in the Brú na Bóinne Visitors Center tour, and you cannot enter inside the tomb, but you can directly access it (it’s a short way from the Slane to Drogheda road) and meander around the peaceful site.

Hill of Tara

Hill of Tara (Ireland's Content Pool)

Hill of Tara (Ireland's Content Pool)

The Hill of Tara , also in the Boyne Valley, is the ancient seat of power in Ireland and contains over 30 visible ancient monuments, including the Stone of Destiny and the Mound of the Hostages.

The Hill is said to be the actual seat of the High Kings of Celtic Ireland and the sacred dwelling place of the gods.

It is believed that St. Patrick went to Tara - the most powerful Celtic pagan site - in order to confront the religion of the Celtic pagans .

One of the most famous monuments at Tara, the Stone of Destiny, is known as the Lia Fáil. The stone, which is thought to be a symbol of fertility, once stood in front of the passage tomb at Tara, the Mound of the Hostages. High King legend says the Stone of Destiny would sing and roar in praise if it approved the inauguration of a worthy high king.

The megalithic passage tomb at Tara, the Mound of the Hostages, is the oldest monument on the site. Evidence of at least 200 individual cremations has been uncovered at the mound.

Engravings within the tomb are thought to represent the sun, moon, or stars as religious symbols and one of the stones may have been used as a prehistoric calendar.

Access to the Hill of Tara is free, but if you want to hear a bit more background on the site, take a guided tour through the visitor center.

Hill Of Slane

Hill of Slane (Ireland's Content Pool)

Hill of Slane (Ireland's Content Pool)

According to the myth, the impressive Hill of Slane is the burial place of King Sláine, the king of the Fir Bolg (an ancient people of Ireland).

In more recent Christian history, the hill is also the site where Patrick lit the divine Paschal Fire in defiance of the pagan kings at Tara. Church ruins lie atop the hill, and the site remains a popular destination for Christians.

The Hill of Slane is accessible at all times, and there is no entry fee.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 2: Loughcrew, Oldcastle, Co. Meath

Loughcrew Cairns (Ireland's Content Pool)

Loughcrew Cairns (Ireland's Content Pool)

Loughcrew, also called “The Storied Hills” or “Mountain of the Witch,” is one of Ireland’s major passage tomb sites (the others are Bru na Boinne, Carrowkeel, and Carrowmore), all believed to date back to around 3200 B.C. The site is made up of clusters of cairns (manmade, pyramid-like stone piles) around hills.

The winter solstice at Newgrange is well known, but the lesser-known Equinox illumination at sunrise occurs at Loughcrew. The backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and autumn equinoxes.

The myth says that the monuments of Loughcrew were created by a witch flying overhead who dropped large stones from her apron.

Admission to the site is free, but be aware that the climb to Loughcrew is quite steep.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 3: Navan Fort & The King’s Stables Armagh, Co. Armagh

Navan Fort (Navan Centre & Fort, Facebook)

Navan Fort (Navan Centre & Fort, Facebook)

Navan Fort is a historical royal fortress on Killylea Road in Co. Armagh. The ancient monument was a stronghold of the kings of Ulster around 700 B.C. The Fort was the center of King Conchobar mac Nessa and his Red Branch Knights.

Navan Fort is surrounded by a bank with a ditch inside, suggesting that it was a ceremonial, rather than defensive, site.

It is said that the great Irish mythical hero Cuchulainn spent much of his youth in Navan Fort before single-handedly facing the army of the mythical Queen Maeve.

The Fort was eventually abandoned, which probably was a result of the creation of St. Patrick’s church two miles away. But in 1005, the Irish king Brian Boru camped there, and in 1387, Niall O’Neill chose Navan Fort as the location for a house.

One mile west of Navan Fort lies another myth site, the mysterious King’s Stables which is thought to have played a role in water rituals in the area.

King's Stables, which was built around 1000 B.C, is a 10-foot-deep man-made pool surrounded by a bank. It is believed that its significance had to do with water because the prehistoric Celts are known to have practiced water cult ceremonies.

A brief excavation of the site in 1975 uncovered the front of a human skull that was severed from the back part, perhaps related to another famous Celtic cult ritual – the severed head, a large-scale beheading as a human sacrifice to the Celtic gods.

You can take a tour of the sites through the Navan Center.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 4: Beaghmore Stones, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone

Beaghmore Stones (Ireland's Content Pool)

Beaghmore Stones (Ireland's Content Pool)

Stone circles in Ireland span across the Sperrins Mountains in Counties Tyrone, Derry, and Fermanagh. In each area, there is a concentration of sites made up of multiple stone circles. The circles have relatively small diameters and are comprised of 40 or so stones each.

The circles are typically misshapen and occur in pairs or multiples in one place.

Tyrone has the most stone circles; there are 61 known rings there.   The most famous stone circle complex is at Beaghmore (“the moor of the birches”) in Co. Tyrone. The complex was accidentally uncovered in the 1940s while men were peat cutting. It took four years of excavation to remove a thick layer of protective peat and to uncover the 1269 stones of the seven-circle complex.

Thus far, seven stone circles, 13 cairns and several rows of standing stones that make up the Beaghmore complex have been uncovered, but it is assumed that even more are still hidden in the surrounding peat.

It is believed that the stone circles date back to 1600 B.C., but field walls, fireplaces, and flint tools discovered at the site suggest that it was in use since 2900 B.C.

It seems that the builders of the complex wanted to point the stone rows at the midwinter sunset, so some archaeologists believe that the circles were constructed to record the movements of the sun and moon in order to mark lunar and solar events.

Alternatively, the stone rows are thought by many to have been used for ancient rituals, either religious or social.

The Beaghmore Stones lie 10 miles west of Cookstown and can be accessed for free at any time.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 5: Grianan Ailigh Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

Grianan Ailigh (DiscoverIreland.ie)

Grianan Ailigh (DiscoverIreland.ie)

An Grianan Ailigh is a mysterious circular stone fort which is thought to date back to 1700 B.C. The fort sits on the hill of Grianan, 750 feet above sea level, so the views from the surrounding Donegal countryside are amazing.

According to myth, the fort was built 4,000 years ago by the god of the people called Tuatha De Danann in order to house the grave of his son. The fort then became the seat of the Kingdom of Ailigh and was a center of culture and politics during the rule of early Irish chieftains.

The road that leads to Grianan Ailigh can be accessed from the main Letterkenny to Derry road.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 6: Carrowmore and Carrowkeel Co Sligo

Carrowmore and Carrowkeel are two megalithic sites in Co Sligo and once held over 200 tombs.

The two sites are joined by the Uinshin River, which flows from Lough Arrow to Ballisodare Bay – the main road during the Stone Age. This makes the Carrowmore/Carrowkeel area one of the most important centers of ancient mythological Ireland.

The location of the monuments, along with their breadth and majesty, shows the significance of the area, and the ancient Celtic people’s reverence for the dead.

Carrowmore (Getty Images)

Carrowmore (Getty Images)

The most extensive megalithic complex in Ireland, about 30 tombs can be viewed at the sacred lands of Carrowmore (though it is thought that up to 100 existed at one time).

The tombs are mostly “dolmen” circles or a single tomb made of three or so upright stones supporting a large, flat, horizontal stone, surrounded by a circle of boulders. There is an average of 30-35 stones in each boulder circle, set side by side. Most circles are around 40 feet in diameter, but a few span up to 165 feet.

Carrowmore is classified alongside Newgrange and Loughcrew as part of the Irish Passage Tomb Tradition.

Within Carrowmore lies the Great Cairn of Knocknarea – also known as Queen Maeve’s Tomb.

The monument, 197 feet in diameter, was built about 6,000 years ago and is situated on the highest part of the flat top of Knocknarea mountain, 327 meters above the sea.

The cairn is one of the most impressive and well-preserved ancient monuments in all of Ireland and stands in one of the most beautiful and visible locations of any passage tomb.

According to legend, the site is the resting place of Queen Maeve of Connaught in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology, and an iconic Irish mythological warrior (this may help to explain why her tomb is so well preserved).

Queen Maeve is notorious for inciting the Tain Bo Culainge (“The Cattle Raid of Cooley”), where she led her province to war against Ulster to steal their prized bull.

Maeve’s choice to be buried in Knocknarea speaks volumes of its importance in Irish mythological history.

Carrowkeel (Getty Images)

Carrowkeel (Getty Images)

Carrowkeel, which lies atop the Bricklieve Mountains, is a collection of some of the most mysterious mounds in all of Ireland.  It is a lesser-known ancient site than Carrowmore but is equally significant in Ireland’s mythical past and has one of the most beautiful locations of any megalithic site. Carrowkeel is the fourth major passage tomb cemetery in Ireland (the others being Newgrange, Loughcrew, and Carrowmore).

Today, 14 passage tombs can be seen at Carrowkeel. One of the tombs is a “classic” Irish passage tomb – one that consists of a short passage you can crawl through, which leads to a central chamber with three equally spaced side chambers. What’s unique about the tomb is the roof box above the entrance. The only other known roof box exists at Newgrange, but while Newgrange is aligned to the Winter solstice, the Carrowkeel roof box is aligned to the midsummer sunset, signaling two different types of rituals that must have taken place in the locations.

Both Carrowmore and Carrowkeel are very accessible from the main roads in South Sligo.

Ireland's Best Mythological Sites Tour Stop 7: The Rock of Cashel, Cashel, Co. Tipperary

Rock of Cashel (Getty Images)

Rock of Cashel (Getty Images)

Legend has it that the Devil took a bit out of a side of a mountain in North Tipperary – now known as the Devil’s Bit – and then spat out a rock, which landed at Cashel. That rock is now known as the Rock of Cashel.

The Rock was the traditional seat of the High Kings of Munster prior to the Norman invasion.

Numerous buildings are perched on the site, the majority of which date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and today hold some of the most extraordinary collections of Celtic art in Europe.

The Rock of Cashel is also known as St. Patrick’s Rock because Cashel is the presumed site of the conversion of the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century.

The site has a small admission fee, and guided tours are available upon request.

15 Magical Places In Ireland That Look Like Something From A Fairytale

15 Magical Places In Ireland That Look Like Something From A Fairytale

Ireland’s home to an endless number of incredible places to visit.

Some of these places are steeped in history. Others are areas of immense natural beauty. And others, well, others are a different story altogether, as you’ll discover shortly.

In the guide below, you’ll find 15 places in Ireland that look like they’ve been whipped straight from a Walt Disney movie.

Expect everything from cliff-side castles and romantic ruins to ancient forts and plenty more.

1. Menlo Castle in Galway

menlo castle in galway

Photo by Lisandro Luis Trarbach (Shutterstock)

You’ll find Menlo Castle , a gorgeous ruin of a 16th-century castle, just outside Galway City on the banks of the River Corrib.

Once owned by the richest family in Galway in 1592, all that remains now are its ivy-covered walls.

The castle is a half-hour walk or a short drive from the centre of Galway. When you arrive, walk to the end of the dirt road and climb over the locked gate. After that, it’s possible to go inside and explore but BE CAREFUL.

2. A crumbly cliff-side castle in Antrim

To say that the location of Kinbane Castle , which was built in 1547, is dramatic would be doing it a colossal injustice.

Built on a small rock promontory called Kinbane Head which extends out into the sea, the scenery surrounding the castle is just breath-taking.

Isolated ruins, jagged cliffs and the powerful Atlantic Ocean combine to make this a place that’ll cement itself in your mind.

3. The incredible Gougane Barra in West Cork

where to go in Ireland

Photo by Brian Fox (this is his website and you’ll find him on IG here )

You’ll find the brilliant Gougane Barra in County Cork, in the South West of Ireland, not far from the Beara Peninsula and a stone’s throw (54-minute drive) from Kenmare in Kerry.

If you’re not familiar with it, Gougane Barra is an area of immense wild scenery and natural beauty that you’ll find tucked away on 137 acres at the edge of the Sheehy Mountains.

Many people that visit Cork, for some bizarre reason, completely overlook the gorgeous 137-acre park that’s hidden away in a lovely valley at the edge of the Sheehy mountains.

4. Doon Fort in Donegal

doo fort in donegal

You’ll find Doon Fort in Donegal on a little island in the centre of Loughadoon, not far from the coastal villages of Narin and Portnoo.

Doon Fort is a large Western Stone Fort and, when gawked at from above, it looks like it’s home to a lush green garden.

Over the years the fort has been linked to the Breslin and the O’Boyle clans. It’s said that the Breslin’s occupied the fort from the 5th century, while the O’Boyle clan took it over until it fell into disrepair.

If you fancy visiting Doon Fort, I’ve heard that you can rent boats during the summer and sail over to it for a nosey (there’s no official website stating this but you can find more info in this guide ).

5. Clough Oughter Castle in Cavan

You’ll find the fairytale-like Clough Oughter Castle in the Marble Arch Geopark, next to the picturesque Killykeen Forest Park.

The island upon which Clough Oughter sits (known as a Crannog) was made by man. It’s incredible to think of the engineering that must have went into building it.

Over the years, the castle fell under the control of many different clans. Towards the end of the 12th century, the castle was in the grasps of the O’Rourkes.

6. Mussenden Temple in Derry

The Mussenden Temple is one of those places that looks like it’s been whipped from a Hollywood set.

You’ll find the temple in the stunning surroundings of Downhill Demesne in County Derry where it’s perched on a 120-foot high cliff overlooking the ocean.

It was constructed in 1785 and its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome.

7. The Rock of Cashel in Tipperary

The rock of cashel

Tourists go mad for the Rock of Cashel. And it’s not exactly hard to see why. The place looks like something whipped straight from the mind of Walt Disney.

The fairytale-like Rock of Cashel dates back to the 5th Century and the inauguration of Aenghus King of Munster by St. Patrick himself.

St. Patrick travelled to Cashel to transform the Munster kingship from one of paganism to one of Christianity.

8. Tollymore Forrest in Down

Next up is Tollymore Forest Park which, in the picture above, looks a little bit like something from the Lord of the Rings.

Tollymore Forest covers an impressive 630 hectares of land at the foot of the Mourne Mountains .

It’s a fine spot for walking, camping, horse riding, and orienteering, and there’s also a big play area for kids.

There are 4 different trails that you can head off on in Tollymore, the most popular of which is the Red Trail, a three-mile-long trail that passes through woodland and offers dramatic views of the Pot of Legawherry.

9. The Swiss Cottage in Tipperary

swiss cottage tipperary

Built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, the Swiss Cottage in Tipperary was originally part of Lord and Lady Cahir’s estate and was used to entertain guests.

While the cottage was restored in 1985, its unusual and rustic features remain intact. A visit to the Swiss Cottage is perfectly paired with a trip to Cahir Castle.

You can stroll along the riverside to the Swiss Cottage from the castle in about 45 minutes.

10. Kylemore Abbey in Galway

Kylemore Abbey connemara

Kylemore Castle in Connemara tends to top the to-see lists of many people planning a visit to County Galway.

Constructed in 1867, Kylemore Abbey boasts an almost endless number of tales of romance, tragedy, spirituality, and innovation.

The abbey is now home to the Benedictine nuns, who’ve been calling it home since 1920. I’ve visited Kylemore Abbey 2 or 3 times over the years and have never once gone inside.

You can just as easily admire the beauty of this place from afar.

11. Grianan of Aileach in Donegal

The Grianan of Aileach is a hillfort that sits on top of the 801 ft high Greenan Mountain on Inishowen in Donegal.

The scenic drive up to the fort, which is said to date back to the 1st century, is worth the trip alone.

When you reach the top you’ll have a magnificent 360 view that takes in Lough Swilly, Lough Foyle and the spectacular countryside that the Inishowen Peninsula boasts by the bucket load.

12. Doonagore Castle in Clare

The iconic Doonagore Castle in Doolin is like something whipped straight from a fairytale. You’ll find it plonked on a hill that overlooks the beautiful Aran Islands.

The castle dates back to the 16th century and while you can’t go inside, it’s worth visiting to admire it from the outside and from afar.

13. Leap Castle in Offaly

most haunted castle in ireland

You’ll find Leap Castle 6km north of Roscrea in a town called Coolderry in County Offaly. How long it has been there is open to debate, by all accounts.

Some say that the castle was constructed in the 12th century. Other websites and news outlets claim that it was built much later, in the 15th century.

Leap Castle is said to be one of the longest continually inhabited castles in Ireland, and it boasts a rich and disturbing history (which you can find out more about here ).

14. McDermott’s Castle in Roscommon

You’ll find McDermott’s Castle in County Roscommon on Lough Key, 3km northeast of the town of Boyle.

Stretching around 10km across and forming a rough circular shape, Lough Key contains over 30 islands scattered throughout its chilly waters.

One of these islands is aptly named ‘Castle Island’ and it’s here that you’ll find the ruins of McDermott’s Castle. Learn more about the history of the castle here .

The Amazing Magical and Mystical Sites in Ireland

mystical sites in Ireland

There are some incredible mystical sites in Ireland.

In fact, throughout Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and Northern France — namely Brittany — you’ll find a lot of stone circles, standing stones and prehistoric burial chambers.

Scotland may have the most, but I haven’t had the chance to explore these — yet.

Fingers crossed for a return visit to Scotland in 2020. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🤞

But I have visited a few mysterious and intriguing sites in Ireland and I have loved every one of them I’ve experienced.

There really is something moving about these destinations.

I find myself wondering about the people — what they experienced in every day life, why they built these structures and stone circles.

I’m in awe of how in tune with the earth they seemed to be.

They moved with the seasons, letting the sun, moon and stars guide their lives.

So in honor of winter solstice — the shortest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere — here are some of my favorite mystical sites in Ireland that I’ve experienced.

And there are a few I have on my “I want to visit” list.

Mystical sites in Ireland I’ve experienced

Newgrange is the star of the mystical sites in Ireland and is probably the most visited and most famous.

It’s a passage tomb that dates back to about 3200BC.

And it’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

I’m quite sure my jaw dropped on my first visit to Newgrange.

Located in County Meath and just an hour or so from Dublin, Newgrange sits in the sacred Boyne River valley along with Knowth and Dowth.

This is what is known as the Brú na Bóinne area.

Brú na Bóinne means “palace of the Boyne” and it was so named because it’s this part of the Boyne River where the ancient people of Ireland built these incredible structures.

There are a few other sites in this list from the area.

Anyway…

Newgrange is lined up so that on winter solstice morning at sunrise, the small inner chamber lights up.

They do a fabulous re-creation of this on the tour.

It’s amazing!

The tour itself is highly informative and very fascinating.

I’m a huge fan of Newgrange  and recommend it to all of my travel clients!

Here’s something that you might be interested in — you can enter your name in a lottery to actually be at Newgrange on Winter Solstice morning to witness the real thing.

Tip: You must take a guided tour which begins at the visitor center.

mystical sites in Ireland

Newgrange is the most famous mystical site in Ireland. It’s very cool!

Newgrange

This is a cool view of Newgrange from the road to the visitor center.

Knowth is another mystical site in Ireland that is part of the Brú na Bóinne  area of County Meath .

And you can visit this site along with Newgrange.

I visited Knowth for the first time in 2018.

But it’s a different experience from Newgrange.

Knowth has 2 entrances and 2 passage tombs.

It also has satellite mounds/passage tombs scattered about the site.

The rock art here is extraordinary — way cool!

The downfall to Knowth is you can’t go inside the chambers as it’s still being excavated.

So while you are allowed to enter a small chamber immediately inside Knowth, you don’t get to go way inside of it like you do at Newgrange.

But you get a look down a passage way and it looks phenomenal.

Tip: You must take a guided tour which begins at the visitor center AND do take a good look at the stone carvings as they are amazing!

Knowth

The ancient site of Knowth is all about its mounds and its rock drawings.

This is the main mound in Knowth which aligns with the equinoxes. Take the time to look at the carved stones around it.

Hill of Tara

This is one of those magical sites that requires some imagination — and some background and history.

The Hill of Tara is one of the most sacred places in Ireland.

It is said that 142 kings reigned here in prehistoric and historic times.

In ancient Irish religion and mythology the Hill of Tara was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods.

And it was the entrance to the “otherworld” which we might think of as the afterlife.

The Hill of Tara is pretty much just a hill how.

But they have found passage tombs here as well as indications under the earth that there was a huge temple at Tara once upon a time.

The Hill of Tara dates back to the late Stone Age which puts it at about 2500 to 2000BC.

But it was probably in the early Christian times (early AD times) that it was at its most prominent as a place of political and religious importance.

Remember that Christianity didn’t come to Ireland until the 5th century — later than a lot of other parts of Europe.

What you see at this mystical site in Ireland are indentations in the earth as well as uplifts of the ground in spots.

So you need to use you imagination as to what the Hill of Tara was like in ancient times.

There is a single standing stone on the hill thought to be the Stone of Destiny.

It is said that the stone roars when touched by the rightful king of Tara.

My recommendation is to spend your time here and walk around to all the different parts.

Quiet your mind and let your imagination go.

I love this magical site!

Tip: Give yourself time to wander about here.

Hill of Tara

This is probably the most sacred place in Ireland. But at the Hill of Tara you have to use your imagination a bit.

Take your time to wander about the Hill of Tara and do use your imagination.

Loughcrew Cairns

Another mystical site in Ireland in County Meath, Loughcrew Cairns are a collection of passage tombs dating back to 3000BC.

These passage tombs are scattered over 3 hills and are often referred to as the Hills of the Witch.

The cairns or passage tombs are denoted by letter.

Cairn T is the largest and sees the most visitors.

It has some amazing Neolithic art inside and it actually aligns with the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.

So this mystical site in Ireland was used for burials, the telling of the seasons and it’s thought that there were other ceremonies that took place here.

In fact, there is a stone throne that is known as The Hag’s Chair on the north side of Cairn T.

I think this is actually one of my favorite of Ireland’s ancient, magical sites.

While it doesn’t have the big WOW factor of Newgrange, there is a lot just at Cairn T, which is the only part I experienced.

There is the stone throne, rock art, the main passage tomb along with smaller ones.

And the views from up on the hill are stunning.

Tip: If you want to go into the passage tomb you must get the key from Loughcrew Gardens.

Loughcrew Cairns

Loughcrew Cairns is one of my favorite mystical site in Ireland. This is Cairn T, the most visited Cairn. There are some fabulous views from here too!

carved stone

There are some intriguing carved stones at Loughcrew Cairns. Take your time to really look at everything.

Drombeg Stone Circle

This is probably Ireland’s most famous stone circle.

Located in County Cork, Drombeg Stone Circle is close to the village of Glandore.

It’s well marked, so you should be able to find it.

From the parking area it’s just a short walk to this mystical site in Ireland.

Now, if you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know I love stone circles.

Well, I love all of these mysterious sites.

But stone circles are exceptionally intriguing to me.

There’s a lot of WHY when it come to these sites.

Why did the ancient people build these?

Why in this specific location and not on the hill “over there?”

How did they get the stone to that spot?

That was a “how.”

But you get the idea.

Stone circles are mysteries.

And Drombeg is no different as no one knows really what it was used for.

What they do know is that it’s a recumbent stone circle due to the one long horizontal stone at the western edge of the circle.

These recumbent circles are common in this region of County Cork and in nearby County Kerry.

The recumbent stone is thought to be the sacrificial altar if you believe the ancient people made sacrifices here.

It’s directly opposite the two tall stones (2m+) that seem to be the ceremonial entrance portal.

And, to add more intrigue, the sunset on winter solstice aligns from the portal to the center of the recumbent stone and almost fits into a noticeable notch in a hillside 1.6km away.

There’s more.

2 of the stones seem to indicate there may have been fertility rituals held at Drombeg.

One stone seems to very male and another distinctly female.

Again, it’s all a mystery.

I’m certainly glad I’ve spent some time here.

And I highly recommend it to all of you.

Tip: Visit late in the day or first thing in the morning to avoid crowds as Drombeg is pretty popular.

Drombeg Stone Circle

Drombeg Stone Circle is the most famous of Ireland’s stone circles. And it’s well worth the visit.

mystical sites in Ireland

The views around Drombeg Stone Circle are beautiful!

Derreenataggart Stone Circle

This is one of those “stumbled upon” mystical sites in Ireland that makes it that more interesting.

Located on the Beara Peninsula just past the town of Castletownbere, this circle of 12 stones is another recumbent stone circle.

Like Drombeg it also has 2 stones that serve as a portal to walk through.

I was the only one to explore this stone circle on a trip around Beara with my Irish friend and my parents back in 2010.

So it’s one I’d love to revisit so I can spend more time communing with the ancient spirits.

I felt kind of rushed since the others were sitting in the car waiting for me.

I highly recommend traveling to the Beara Peninsula and making a stop at this mystical site in Ireland.

Tip: Do drive over the Healy Pass in the middle of the Beara Peninsula because it’s gorgeous!

mystical sites in Ireland

Derreenataggart Stone Circle is located on the Beara Peninsula and is one of the stone circles you don’t want to miss.

Kenmare Stone Circle

This stone circle is literally just a few minutes walk from the center of Kenmare , County Kerry — one of my favorite Irish towns.

It’s probably one of the easiest stone circles to visit.

This mystical site in Ireland is also known locally as ‘The Shrubberies.’

Kenmare Stone Circle is different from the above 2 as it actually has a boulder ‘dolmen’ in the center and it’s a bit more oval-shaped than circular.

As with so many of these circles, no one knows exactly what they were used for.

But there seems to be some alignment of the 15 stones with lunar and solar events.

In some ways, The Shrubberies was a tad bit disappointing because it’s enclosed by trees and is more of a manicured garden.

Most of the other stone circles have some fabulous view and are a bit more “ruin-y.”

However, I still think this site is worthy of a stop.

Tip: Kenmare Stone Circle can be a bit difficult to find if you don’t know where to look. Walk down Market Street and you’ll find it!

Kenmare Stone Circle

Kenmare Stone Circle is right in the town of Kenmare in County Kerry.

A really cool site located in County Sligo near Mullaghmore is Creevykeel court tomb.

I passed it twice — because it’s literally sitting by the side of the main road behind some trees and there’s just a small sign.

But I parked in the parking area — which is a good size — and walked up a pathway behind the trees to this fascinating site.

I loved that I could walk around it all, touch the stones and sit under the henge.

Creevykeel dates back to 4000 to 2500BC and they did find 4 cremation burials here.

I love these smaller sites that — while there’s no guide to tell you all about it — leave a lot to the imagination and let you be a part of the ancient history.

Tip: Keep your eyes open for a small sign and fairly large parking area on the east side of the N15.

Creevykeel

Creevykeel Court Tomb is a small, free site in County Sligo. It’s very cool and right off the main road.

Beltany Stone Circle

I think this is my favorite mystical site in Ireland.

Beltany Stone Circle is another one of those sites you find sitting in the middle of a field.

And it’s free which is a plus.

Located in County Donegal just outside the village of Raphoe, this stone circle dates back to 1400 to 800BC.

It was thought that there were as many as 80 or more stones but now there are about 64.

Beltany sits up on a hill and has fabulous views across the pastoral landscape.

The sheep graze around it which I simply love.

The name Beltany comes from the spring festival of Beltane.

This ceremony is associated with the lighting of fires on the hills as a “rekindling” of the sun.

And it was here at Beltany that archeologists found a carved stone head that probably dates from the pre-Christian Iron Age.

So the thinking is that this site was used for many centuries after it was built.

I spent a bit of time here  in 2017 just communing with the ancient spirits and touching every one of those stones.

It’s truly a special place.

Tip: Drive to the village of Raphoe and you’ll see signs for Beltany. It’s a short walk from the small parking area up to the stone circle.

mystical sites in Ireland

Beltany Stone Circle is one of my favorite mystical sites in Ireland. It’s a magical place!

Beltany Stone Circle

Spend some time at Beltany Stone Circle. It’s definitely a magical place!

Mystical sites in Ireland on my “must see” list

Lough gur stone circle.

I stumbled upon this ancient site in Ireland on a Google search a few years back.

And it’s been on my list since.

Located in County Limerick and only about 22km (14miles) from Limerick City this is first and foremost a lake.

But it’s the treasures around the lake that make it so enticing to me.

There’s a castle and a wedge tomb but it’s the stone circle that I really want to visit.

The stone circle here at Lough Gur — known as the Grange Stone Circle — is the largest in Ireland and is in an almost perfect circular shape.

What makes this mystical site in Ireland so unique is that the stones are not free-standing but rather adjoining.

There’s also a smaller stone circle nearby as well as other sites around the lake.

And the time to visit?

Summer solstice seems to be when the the stones line up just right.

But it’s a popular time so you may want to visit at a different time of year.

It’s free to see this ancient site but donations are recommended and appreciated.

However, if you want to take a guided tour that lasts 2 1/2 hours, it will set you back €15.

You can take a shorter tour, upon request.

I am hoping to make a stop at this amazing site on my next trip to Ireland.

Tip: Do be sure to wear waterproof shoes for walking around this site.

mystical sites in Ireland

The Grange Stone Circle at Lough Gur. This is a site that is high on my “must see” list.

Carrowmore is located in County Sligo just south of Sligo Town and is a Heritage Ireland site like Newgrange and Knowth.

This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland and it’s also among the country’s oldest dating back to about 4600 to 3900BC.

There are 60 known tombs at Carrowmore but only about 30 are visible.

Some of them are circular and some look more like wedge tombs.

Since this is a Heritage Ireland site, Carrowmore does have an exhibition center and it does cost to visit.

But at just €5 for an adult, I imagine it’s well worth it.

This is one of those mystical sites in Ireland that I really want to experience.

Tip: Carrowmore is not open to visitors in winter so if you are traveling out of season, you’re out of luck.

mystical sites in Ireland

Carrowmore is a large place. This is one of the stone circles you’ll see there. I would love to visit this site!

Carrowkeel is more like Loughcrew Cairns with passage tombs scattered over hills and a lettering system to identify them.

These passage tombs date back to about 3500BC so they aren’t quite as old as Carrowmore.

But they look really amazing.

Located in County Sligo near the village of Castlebaldwin, Carrowkeel is easy to find as it’s well signposted along the main N4.

There is a parking area nearby and you simply walk up the hill to the tombs.

You’ll find 14 neolithic cairns in the ‘town’ of Carrowkeel.

And you’ll find several more on the hills to the west.

Cairn G in especially interesting as it has a roofbox situated above the entrance.

The only other known roofbox is the one at Newgrange .

But unlike Newgrange this roofbox is aligned with the midsummer sunset instead of the winter solstice sunrise.

I really love Loughcrew Cairns so I think Carrowkeel would be very cool to experience.

Plus this mystical site in Ireland is free!

Tip: Do give yourself enough time here and do check out this website for more information so you have a better idea of what you’re looking at when you visit.

Carrowkeel

Carrowkeel, another mystical site in County Sligo, looks a lot like Loughcrew Cairns. I would love to visit this site!

Skellig Michael

While all the other sites are ancient, pagan sites, Skellig Michael is the outlier as it’s a Christian site.

But I am including it in this list of mystical sites in Ireland because of its remoteness.

I’m fascinated by the fact that these monks wanted to be so isolated.

Was it their pure devotion?

Did they want to shut off the rest of the world for fear of being tempted?

No one knows for sure.

But for about 500 years, this monastic colony existed on Skellig Michael before moving to the mainland.

While you can visit this island, it’s not easy.

Most boats leave from Portmagee and make the 12km (8miles) trip about 4 or 5 out of 7 days.

This is due to the rough seas around the island that make the trip very unsafe a lot of the year.

The other consideration is that the boats typically only go over to Skellig Michael from mid-May to early October — at least those that actually land on the island.

You can take a boat tour around Skellig Michael and Little Skellig without making a landing.

Tip: If you want to visit, do stay out on the Ring of Kerry a couple of nights so you have more than 1 day to get to Skellig Michael.

Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael is not an ancient site, but there is something special about this mystical site in Ireland.

Would you add sites to this list?

I’d love to hear about some other mystical sites in Ireland.

Drop me a note to tell me all about them.

And check out the Heritage Ireland website for more information on most of these mystical sites.

magical ireland tours

Ireland, `the Emerald Isle`, offers some of the most beautiful landscapes and views in the entire world, from castles in ruins in verdant valleys to rocky cliffsides overlooking the Atlantic. It is a country that is fiercely proud of its native language and culture, and venturing outside the major cities, you will be able to view a more rural experience. This is most popularly achieved by driving the 111-mile Ring of Kerry in the western part of the country, or visiting the charming Gaeltacht where Irish is only spoken. But definitely do not discount the cities, home to charm, history, and great landmarks, such as the cosmpolitan capital of Dublin, and large cities such as Limerick and Cork.

It is a popular seaside destination with beautiful beaches and long winding promenade and has a buzzing cosmopolitan city center. The city is a joy to explore with its labyrinthine cobbled streets, colorful shop facades and busy café/bar culture. The city is renowned for its thriving Irish theatre, arts, music and culture scene and Galway plays host to a number of internationally renowned festivals throughout the year. Eyre Square and the imposing Galway Cathedral are but two of Galway`s best-known sights. Further afield from Galway City, you will find Kylemore Abbey, Ashford Castle, the Aran Islands and Connemara National Park. Explore the region across Galway Bay, Lynch Castle, Galway City Museum, the National Aquarium, Salthill beach, Spanish Arch, festivals like the annual Galway Arts Festival and much more!

Limerick is the third-largest city in the Republic of Ireland. The history of beautiful Limerick, on the Shannon River, goes back over a millennium. The Vikings and the Old English inhabited a walled city to the north of the current city center, while the native Irish lived to the south across the Abbey River, a tributary of the Shannon. The end of the Williamite Wars were fought in Limerick, and you can learn more about the war`s impacts at the Limerick City Museum and the 13th-century King John's Castle. It wasn't until the eighteenth century when Edmund Sexton Pery designed the current city center, a living showcase of Georgian architecture. Limerick is a resurgent city ready to welcome tourists with a smile. Visit King John's Castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, The Hunt Museum, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Limerick City Museum, Frank McCourt Museum, The Treaty Stone, Newtown Pery, King`s Island, Limerick Milk Market, People`s Park and so much more!
