How Experts Plan Luxury Trips With Black Travelers in Mind

AfroLatino woman enjoys summer at the beach in USA

A new MMGY Travel Intelligence report recently announced that Black travelers in the U.S. spent $109.4 billion in 2019, accounting for 13.1 percent of the U.S. leisure travel market. It’s a sign of the ever-growing Black travel movement, supported and spurred on by online communities , professional travel organizations, increased accessibility, and more.

Yet while group travel for Black Americans has gained popularity in recent years, some Black explorers are also choosing to go out on their own—whether solo or with loved ones—and are leaning into more exclusive, private experiences. Many are also looking to Black travel specialists to help them create these unique moments and memories.

“Regardless of race, people want to have a transformative travel experience,” says Nik Morales, CEO and owner of The Travel Agency . For Morales, her trip planning process is always rooted in getting to know her clients from their hobbies and lifestyle to their specific needs for each trip—and adding special touches to their trips accordingly, whether that's a private wine tasting, a private helicopter tour , or exclusive access to a beachfront villa .

Camp Yoshi, Alex Forestier

Tiffany L. Layne, the owner and private experience designer behind LaVon Travel & Lifestyle , takes a similar case-by-case approach. For Black travelers, that means going beyond recommendations based on their specific needs and suggesting Afro-centric experiences or Black history tours wherever they’re available. In Paris , for example, she has worked with local providers to curate historian-led, private tours that explore the city through the lens of the prominent Black writers, artists, and musicians that once lived there.

Tailoring itinerary suggestions to a client’s heritage is something she does for everyone, though. Layne also recommends Barbados as a destination to her Jewish clients as the island is home to one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere.

“[Black clients] don’t travel differently than any other human just because they’re Black,” Layne says. “Their interests just might be aligned differently, which is true for any traveler.”

Where this difference in interests is especially apparent, however, is with trips to Africa. While Black Americans head to the continent to reconnect with their roots—oftentimes with a DNA test in hand—non-Black travelers go mostly for the animal safaris, according to Gaynelle Henderson, owner and president of Henderson Travel Service . Founded in the 1950s by Henderson’s parents, the company was the first Black-owned travel agency in the U.S. and has specialized in Africa travel ever since.

Paris Traveler

In cities like Paris, travel specialist Tiffany L. Layne will connect her Black clients with private historical tours that trace the lives of Black writers, artists, and musicians.

“[In Africa], I find that African Americans want more of the cultural heritage component than other travelers would want,” says Henderson, owner and president of Henderson Travel Service. “There’s just more interest.”

For her clients, that means organizing visits to Ghanaian villages that specialize in weaving kente cloth and carving wooden stools reminiscent of the Golden Stool once meant for royalty in the Ashanti Kingdom. She also plans tours of former slave castles, where private guides give detailed historical explanations of how each room was used to imprison enslaved people for months before they made the journey to the Americas.

When it comes to other destinations, these travel advisors have no qualms about sending their Black clients everywhere from metropolitan cities to remote islands. But for Morales, certain locations require additional preparations.

“Theoretically, you’d like to say no, but in reality, yes, I do take into consideration the locations for my Black clients,” she says. “It’s not so much that I will offer something different...But on the backend, to make sure that things go seamlessly, I will make certain advisements that I wouldn’t ordinarily have to make with my white clients.”

Working in high-end travel, Morales says many people aren’t used to seeing Black travelers at that level of luxury. To avoid any awkward moments—or worse—Morales often alerts the staff overseas when she is sending over a Black client. She does the same for women traveling alone, as well as LGBTQ+ clients to proactively prevent them from experiencing discrimination. On the other side of the equation, Morales will also give Black travelers a heads up about potential racism or something more innocuous like a lack of specialty products in certain destinations.

Layne takes a different approach. While in principle, she would advise a client ahead of time if a destination were particularly hostile towards Black people, she says she has never had to have that conversation.

“I don’t want to normalize that being Black makes travel harder,” Layne says. When someone asks her if a country is “Black-friendly,” she flips the script, refocusing on what the person wants to experience during their travels and if that destination offers what they’re looking for.

The Best Bagels in New York City

Says Layne, “We’re Black. We’re proud. We’re passionate travelers. We can go anywhere. And if we don’t let ignorance get to us here in the U.S., then why are you going to take that with you when you’re trying to experience something new?”

With more than 20 years of experience under her belt, one of Morales’ most important considerations is simply helping her Black clients dream big. She says that travel is relatively “new” for the Black American population, and many of her clients are the first in their families to explore so widely. With that in mind, Morales feels it’s her duty to share her travel knowledge in hopes of showing her clients what’s possible, especially when it comes to more exclusive experiences.

“It’s about getting the information out there,” says Morales. “For me, especially when it comes to my younger Black clients, it’s about planting a seed. Because once that seed is planted and that imagination gets going, [these bigger trips] will always be something that they want to experience.”

This is part of a series on rethinking private travel , which explores how the pandemic has changed our approach to private travel and made it more accessible to all.

The travel history of black america.

February 15, 2022 12:58 pm By Necoh Mitchell

lavon travel & lifestyle

February is Black History Month, and Independent Travel Advisor Necoh Mitchell, with LaVon Travel & Lifestyle, is helping us share some of the travel history of Black America. It’s important that black history isn’t separate from American history, and sharing our stories is the best way for it to be learned.

lavon travel & lifestyle

How about we start in the 1930s. People would spend their summers traveling by car to visit their families or maybe taking a trip to the beach. Black people didn’t have the freedom to travel just anywhere because Jim Crow laws and segregation prevented this. Angry people who didn’t want to see black travelers confirmed it. So, in 1936 Victor Hugo Green wrote “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” or simply, “The Green Book.” It was a travel guide for black people. Mr. Green published lodging, restaurants, and gas stations that did business with black people. This book kept them informed and safe from 1936 – 1966.

lavon travel & lifestyle

Moving to 1938, Willa Brown Chappell was the first American woman to get her private pilot’s license on June 22, 1938. Mrs. Chappell wasn’t finished with the travel industry, and in 1940 she co-founded the National Airmen’s Association of America, which was also the first black Aviator group. She and her husband also opened the first flight school owned by black people. She also became the first American woman to have both a mechanics (1935) and commercial aviation (1939) license. Talk about a phenomenal woman!

lavon travel & lifestyle

Going into the 1940s, there were enough black pilots who wanted to fly, but they weren’t permitted to use the airports. The answer? The Columbia Air Center. This was an airfield in Croom, Maryland, that was set up by black pilots in 1941. It had an all-black staff and trainers who served in World War II as Tuskegee Airmen. Columbia Air Center was open between 1941-1958. These pilots loved the skies and created a way to stay in them. They are truly an inspiration.

By the 1950s, the “Golden Age of Travel,” black people wanted to travel more domestically and internationally. So Freddye Henderson and her husband Jacob opened Henderson Travel Service in Atlanta, Georgia, to help them do just that. The travel agency booked thousands of trips for black travelers, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, 1964 visit to Oslo, Norway, where he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. The Henderson’s saw the potential of specializing in travel to Africa, so they provided services to go there, including chartering planes to West Africa where there were no commercial flights. They started to focus on trip planning and tours to Africa. They worked closely with almost all of the major African American professional associations, including the National Bar Association, National Medical Association, historically black colleges and universities, and more. Henderson Travel Service used their ingenuity and endurance to create a Travel Agency that black people could trust in to get to the far-flung corners of the earth. Their legacy has paved the way for so many to not only travel, but to work in the travel industry.

lavon travel & lifestyle

It wasn’t until 1956 that you saw a black person become a pilot for an airline. Perry H. Young, Jr., became the first on December 17, 1956, when he was hired by New York Airways. It was in 1965, nine years later, that Captain Marlon Dewitt Green became the first black man to be a pilot for a major U.S. airline, Continental Airlines. It took a lengthy court battle that went to the Supreme Court for him to achieve the right to fly with Continental Airlines. He flew with them from 1965 – 1978. When he died in 2010, Continental Airlines named a Boeing 737 after him. In 1978, Jill Elaine Brown became the first black woman to be hired as a pilot for a major airline , Texas International Airlines.

lavon travel & lifestyle

These tenacious ones paved the way for many little black boys and black girls who dream about traveling the world and working in the travel industry. We see the fruits of their labors. Black people spend over 95 billion dollars on travel. Myself, my family, and my friends contribute to that 95 billion.

lavon travel & lifestyle

We’re so grateful for Mr. Green, Ms. Chappell, the Hendersons, Mr. Young, Mr. Dewitt Green, Ms. Brown, and the Tuskegee Airmen for their contributions to travel. But is all great now? The short answer is no.

lavon travel & lifestyle

While we have organizations like The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals and The National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators & Developers (NABHOOD), and Blacks In Tourism, we need more allies. These organizations are key, but ALL travel organizations should be inclusive of black people. Traveling in general should be a freeing experience for everyone. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Black people do not always feel safe while traveling.

Black people are targeted while traveling.

Black people can be scared while traveling.

Awareness of racism is heightened, but the fact of the matter is – racism still exists. In order for black travel to just be travel, we need others to remember that we are people, not threats. While Black History Month is a great thing to promote awareness, we ask for participation in kindness year-round. Since 1976 we’ve recognized Black History Month in the United States. In those 46 years, it has highlighted some of the great achievements by the innovative and creative minds of Black Americans. Let’s continue to celebrate the incredible past and our inspired future.

lavon travel & lifestyle

I’m grateful to be a part of the community that is Tafari Travel where black people matter. They encourage diversity and look for ways to promote awareness. -- Necoh Mitchell

Listen: Working as a Black Travel Advisor in a Predominantly White Industry

As a part of HAR's initiative to incorporate the work of anti-racism in creating a more equitable travel industry, we kicked off our webinar series: Listen. Learn. Act.

Listen below to HAR’s first installment, where our esteemed panelists chat on the dearth of Black/IPOC (Indigenous, people of color) industry leadership, lack of representation in marketing and travel media, the challenges of operating within a culture of colorblindness, and the extra steps they need to take to serve their Black/African American clients.

Listen with us below!

The Conversation Continues!

I'm handing the mic to agents who generously agreed to share their experiences and expand on the conversation. Also, for the first time ever, we have an article with an opening act from Will's wildly talented niece, Alesa Moore.

We're going to kick it off with Willie, who was supposed to join the webinar, but threw his back out laying pavers! Ouch. Willie, I hope your landscaping was worth the sacrifice.

Willie fruga, owner & Travel advisor of Will's Up Travel

Willie Fruga Jr

On Microaggressions: To fight and try to gain a foothold and seat at the travel industry table as a black travel advisor is constant uphill battle. I have received, from seasoned white TA’s, extremely aggressive and not-so-micro answers to questions. I’ve seen black newbies berated and accused of trying to “get rich quick” by asking a simple question about how to input a personal cruise into the CRM. As a black newbie travel advisor, some of us do not have the luxury of generational travel experience and resources at the ready. We are wading into uncharted waters and doing our best to be successful. I have learned to navigate the waters I’ve been forced to swim in.

Resources for Safe / Friendly Destinations: One thought I had as a way that would allow travel advisors to find out which destinations are safe and friendly toward Black travelers, would be to require resorts receive a certification from a diversity/inclusion review board. Much like AAA. Create a Diversity / Inclusion Agency that would receive verified reports of racism at destinations, track those reports and issue quarterly “scores” that are posted on all review platforms. Much like the health score for a restaurant (My wife and I avoid restaurants with a health score in the low 90’s) The same can be said for the diversity/Inclusion score. I believe destinations would work hard to improve their score thru proper retraining or removing problem employees. Just a thought.

Code Switching: My first experience with code switching occurred when I was about 10 years old. It was 1968 (don’t do the math) and our family was heading to Yosemite National Park, California for a camping trip. I packed and was all set with my cassette tape player and James Brown's Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud tape. I had planned on blasting that tape in the mountains. But Mom said, "Uhh “No.” She didn’t want us to stand out as proud black folks embracing our culture and music. I had to “hide” who I was. Fast forward to current-day events and not much has changed. I still find myself suppressing what makes me me so I don't stand out or call attention to my blackness and Black culture. This suppression of who I really am has infiltrated into my travel business as well. At the time of this article, I do not have my actual face pictured on my website. (Soon to be rectified.) Subconsciously I knew to do so might limit my access to whitey customers.

When dealing with more seasoned TA’s, I often change or switch how I interact with other white travel advisors. I often find that if I tone down my blackness, I am more favorably received. I know that when I am myself, I do not gain access to the kinder, gentler responses to questions. But when I speak more like my white peers, market my business like my white peers, or just overall emulate those that are already seated at the table, I find I get just a little closer, though never quite close enough.

Jenn Earley, Owner of Cultured Vacations and Amplified Marketing Services

Jenn Earley, Owner of Cultured Vacations

I was at a travel event. I asked the presenter what they were doing to make sure their sales collateral was diverse (not even just Black people — but diverse).

He was the VP of marketing. He stumbled and fumbled and eventually said “yeah it’s hard to show inclusivity because then we have to show multiple different groups to make sure everyone’s included”.

He was comfortable stating that answer. I was comfortable moving away from that organization.

Terrassa scott, Owner of Full Cup Travel

Terrassa Scott

I think someone on the webinar mentioned the African prostitutes somewhere making people view anyone that looks African as a prostitute. People need to be aware of those kinds of things. We literally ask, "What do "they" think of black people?" Or "How do they treat black people before we go anywhere." I think it boils down to diversity and education because you'd have to know the problems that we face to know what to look out for.

Someone also mentioned we need something like IGTLA for POC in the comments. I agree. For those that want to help, I'd recommend they look into The Green Book. People like to act like discrimination was so long ago and we're so past it, but that book was published in the 1930s so that black people would know of accommodations where they could feel safe while they traveled.

Destinations and suppliers really need to have more than white people in their marketing. If they have any African history in their country, mention where people can go to experience that culture. However, it needs to be immersive... not something that resembles a zoo where you look and point, but an actual experience. There is black history almost everywhere. Take care of those areas/buildings/artifacts. Don't let that history die out. Tour operators can make money off of that but they think no one cares. I noticed that there aren't really any suppliers available via our hosts and consortiums that represent West Africa. We have to find our own suppliers and hope they're reliable. Those destinations are difficult to the average American so that's another market that is just not represented. West Africa is definitely perfect for guided tours. Many black people want to experience West Africa but they're having to figure it out on their own.

Tiffany Layne, Owner of Lavon Travel & Lifestyle

Tiffany LaVon

While I have experienced great support from many colleagues in the industry I have also experienced great ignorance. We need to address it from all sides and understand that many Travel Advisors themselves sit in their own ignorance and white fragility. I have been in a few luxury travel groups where I was removed for simply wanting to engage in conversation. With white advisors wanting cry uncomfortable and not wanting a group about travel to get “political.” One lady went as far as to say, “oh I visited your profile and I can see your are here to just cause trouble.” Indicating that by visiting my page which had many posts supporting and educating others on the movement it somehow implied I was simply antagonizing.

Dina Farmer, owner of Lily and Magnolia travel

Dina Farmer Headshot

I often feel during my very short time in the travel industry that I am one of the very few travel agents of color. Often times at industry events I'm one of 4-5 other travel agents of color. I feel I'm the center of attention and everyone is looking at me because I'm so unusual in that space. It's really uncomfortable going to industry events and being so underrepresented.

I've never been selected or invited to FAMs. I've often found that as a travel agent as soon as someone sees my face they ghost me. I've been carrying on conversations with potential clients over the phone and the second they see me, I never hear from them again. I personally want to keep my photo in my signature block but I'm beginning to wonder why it goes so silent when I try to help someone book a trip.

Thank You & Stay Tuned.

Thanks to our fabulous panelists and contributors—DeJuan, Tammy, Rosalind, Willie, Terrassa, Jenn, Tiffany, and Dina—for keeping it real and sharing your experiences. We appreciate you've shared your time and stories to put yourself out there to educate your industry peers.

Destination: Luxury

The crème de la crème of travel.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

How do you define luxury travel? Is it a Michelin-starred meal at a restaurant with a hard-to-get reservation? A five-star hotel with butler service on demand? Or, is it more about the journey: a first-class flight with lie-flat seats, an intimate cruise that feels more like a residence at sea, or a glamorous train ride that winds through photogenic scenery. No matter your version of a luxury experience, we're here to help you discover the best of the best: upscale accommodations, exclusive adventures, opulent transportation, and unmatched service that will leave you wanting for nothing.
