Day 1: Your journey will commence from the Gili Islands to the embarkation in Bangsal harbour where your boat will be ready for your adventure.

After the customs clearance and boarding, you will start cruising to Sugian, a scenic place on the eastern coast which is ideal for diving or snorkelling. The trip will continue to Medang Island on night navigation.

Day 2: By morning, you will arrive at Medang Island. You can visit the village, market and get an insight into the local lifestyle after which you can leave for Moyo Island, perfect for light trekking in natural terrain with an attractive waterfall and forest.

Surrounded by beautiful coral reefs and home to exotic wildlife, Moyo Island is a nature and marine preserve of Sumbawa. You can stroll through the island and visit the waterfall. You will also be making your way to Satonda island, which provides some of the most amazing snorkelling experiences. Later, the boat will head to Gili Banta Island in night navigation. 

Day 3: The day will start with a mini-trek to Laba Island viewpoint, then some water sports junkies can have a great chance to dive and snorkel with Manta Rays in Manta Point, afterwards which you can relax at the Pink Beach for a while. Then you can hang around Komodo Island and see the world’s largest lizard, Komodo dragons. After coming back to the boat, you will proceed towards Padar Island.

Day 4: In the morning, you will leave for Padar Island tour where you can behold the scenic trekking viewpoints as far as the eye can see. Later, you will be leaving for Labuan Bajo where your adventurous journey will end.

Sunda Island Cruise: Gili Islands to Komodo (7D/6N)

Few areas in Indonesia can match the cultural and natural diversity that can be found along the route of this Sunda Island Cruise. Most outstandingly, the diverse topography boasts with towering active volcanoes, mountain ranges, jungle clad and dry savannah lowlands. All this on the edge of white sand beaches and an abundant underwater world. This cruise leads you from Lombok’s Gili Islands to the famous Komodo National Park. During this journey, you will cruise past the north of Lombok and Sumbawa. Our Yachts are often accompanied by dolphins and occasionally even whales on the way Cruising to Komodo. Go for a short trek in Moyo Island’s lush forests. Afterward, refresh yourself in the clear water of the waterfalls on the island. Moreover, explore Satonda’s mysterious volcanic lake. Finally, arrive at the plentiful reefs of the  Komodo National Park . Cruising Komodo gives the chance to spot mantas a besides plenty of reef fishes. On the islands of Komodo National Park, you encounter the famous Komodo Dragons, the masters of their savannah’s territory.

SUNDA ISLAND LIVEABOARD DEPARTURE GILI ISLANDS | Day 1

A Sunda Island Cruise starts from Lombok, close to the Gili Islands. Board the vessel in the early afternoon. After settling in onboard and starting your trip with a refreshing welcome drink, introduction to the vessel and safety briefing. After, there is only one thing left: relax and enjoy the sunset, while steaming towards our first site: Moyo Island.

Moyo Island | Day 2

Arriving at Moyo in the morning, we moor at Labuan Haji, a remote bay in a traditional village. Local people will show us a natural pool and crystal-clear waterfall. After a short hike, reward yourself with a refreshing swim in the natural pool. Moyo also offers some excellent reefs close to Labuan Haji. After lunch, we can go snorkelling or go on a dive. You can relax on the sundeck or try your luck fishing. We stay the night moored in one of the bays of Moyo Island.

MOYO ISLAND AND SATONDA | Day 3

In the morning, we explore another reef of Moyo Island and travel further east towards Satonda Island. There we discover a crater lake of an extinct volcano. This place is magical according to the locals. Bring an offering and hang it on one of the trees around the lake. Hence, a wish will become true. Swimming and snorkelling are a welcoming activities on Satonda’s lake and bay. Moreover, the island is an environment for thousands of fruit bats flying around, especially during sunset. After sunset, we set sails and make our way east towards Komodo.

BANTA ISLAND AND KOMODO | Day 4

In the morning, we will arrive on the dry and remote Banta Island. This is the first outcrop island of the Komodo National Park we reach in our Sunda island cruise. Here we go diving or snorkelling in the crystal clear waters around us. In the afternoon, we enter the National Park and moor Gili Lawa Darra, north of Komodo. It offers a spectacular viewpoint over the islands at sunset.

Komod | Day 5

After breakfast, we explore one of the of the most splendid sites in the park on Gili Lawa Laut: a beautiful bay with crystal clear water and a white sandy beach. Some of the best snorkelling sites can be found around this island. The Sunda Island Liveaboard heads further south towards Karang Makassar, aka Manta Point, where often dozens of these gentle giants can be admired feeding on plankton in the current or performing dances. Towards the afternoon, we cruise towards Siaba Besar for some more excellent snorkelling and time to relax and swim. We will moor at a quiet place to spend the night.

KOMODO AND RINCA | Day 6

The next morning, we head to the Ranger Station on Rinca Island. You will go on a guided walk in the national park. You’ll see the dragons, and if you are lucky, you may also see deers, monkeys, and wild buffalos. Back on the boat, we the go snorkelling or diving once again. Towards sunset we set sail to Kalong Island to see thousands of fruit bats ascending for their nightly hunt.

ARRIVAL LABUAN BAJO | Day 7

In the morning we can go for a last swim, snorkel or dive. Then we will return to Labuan Bajo where we check out around midday and your Komodo yacht charter comes to an end. 

Please note, this is a sample itinerary. Each Cruise is different and the detailed day-to-day itinerary and sites will be tailored to suit guests’ preferences as well as weather and ocean conditions. 4 Days 3 Nights Lombok to Komodo boat tour aims to explore all the paradise beyond Lombok, Sumbawa, and Komodo. You will experience sailing with our shared boat trip from Lombok. Sharing thoughts with other travelers from around the world, snorkeling, swimming, island exploring, and seeing the Komodo Dragons. This trip will end in Labuan Bajo, Flores Island.

This trip will use a safe and comfortable standard Phinisi boat. We will use a different boat for each trip with a capacity of 25 or 40 passengers. Itinararay trip 4 days 3 nights Lombok to Komodo boat tour

We will pick you up from Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta, and Bangsal for those who stay on the Gili islands. We will drive you to the office in Senggigi, a meeting point. The pick-up will be available from 09.00 am to 11.00 am. Early pick-up is applied for the ones who stay far from the meeting point, Senggigi.

Note: If you stay on the Gili islands, Gili Trawangan, or Gili Air, you need to be in each harbor of the islands at 07.00 am. Check-in for our local boat from Gili islands to Bangsal.

Trip Itinerary:

Once you arrive in Senggigi, you will have a briefing presented by our team. After that, at 12.00 you are ready for a shuttle bus from Senggigi to Kayangan harbor, east Lombok. It will take approximately 2 hours to get to Kayangan Harbor from Senggigi. You will get on the boat tour from Kayangan Harbor, East Lombok around 14.30.

Day 1: Senggigi - Kayangan - Kanawa - Saleh Bay

Depart from Senggigi at 12.00 to Kayangan harbor and then at 14.30 get on the boat to Kanawa Island. You will leave Kanawa Island around 18.00 and continue to Saleh Bay. Dinner will be served on the boat while sailing to Moyo.

Day 2: Saleh Bay - Komodo Island

Explore Saleh Bay. You are on Saleh Bay in the morning, Snorkeling, feeding the whale shark, watching, and taking pictures. Once you finish the activity, back to the boat, and lunch will be served on the boat. The boat will continue sailing to Komodo Island.

Day 3: Gili Lawa - Komodo Island - Long Pink Beach - Padar Island

Explore Komodo Island for Komodo Dragons. The first to visit is Gili Lawa Island. Hiking for a spectacular view and then continuing to Long Pink Beach. After that, you will trek Komodo Island for Komodo Dragons and a spectacular view. The next to visit is Padar Island.

Day 4: Manjarite - Kelor Island - Labuan Bajo

Visit Kelor Island and Manjarite Beach. Today you will visit Kelor Island, enjoy trekking for beautiful views, snorkeling, beach walking, and swimming. And then, you will continue to Manjarite Beach for snorkeling. After enjoying snorkeling at Manjarite Beach, you will continue to Labuan Bajo, Flores. You will arrive around 14.00 in Labuan Bajo.

Gili Air – Ultimate Guide to an Island Escape

The Gili Islands are a trio of tiny islands located off the coast of Lombok island, Indonesia. From the left to right, they’re named Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air . 

While Gili Trawangan (Gili T) is the largest and known as the party island, Gili Air is the smallest and quieter. Gili Meno is somewhere between the two, literally and figuratively.

In January 2019 I spent three weeks on Gili Air, enjoying the island life. I chilled hard every day by the pool or the ocean, worked on the Gili Air blog, drank some Bintang beers, and enjoyed many Gili Air sunsets. 

There are things to do on Gili Air for everyone!

Gili Air is kid friendly, great for a couple’s getaway, and backpackers of any age can meet other people and have a social time. You can experience Gili Air’s nightlife at late night parties, as well as a chance to experience the laid-back island life. 

Gili Air is a majority Muslim island where you’ll hear the mosques going off five times per day. However, most locals are quite liberal and you’ll get to know some of them well from the sunset bars and all-night Gili Air parties. 

When to Visit Gili Air and the Gili Islands

To get good weather but avoid the crowds, shoot visiting Gili Air during the shoulder months of April-May , and September-October ! 

The busiest months coincide with the holidays, especially Australian holidays, from June-August, and around Christmas. This means more crowds and increased hotel prices. 

The dry season in Bali/Indonesia is April to October. 

After the  Lombok earthquake in August 2018 , many countries placed travel warnings on the country, dropping tourism to the Gili Islands significantly. At the time of writing (February 2019), the Gili Islands are still much quieter than they were before the earthquake.

Getting from Bali to Gili Air

There are fast boats that leave from Bali  to the Gili Islands every day, which you can reserve the day before they depart. I paid 400,000 rupiah ($28.60) for a round-trip ticket (which has an open return date). Most advertised prices range from over 1,000,000 rupiah ($71.40) for a round-trip ticket, or 850,000 ($60.70) for a one-way. Haggling is required to get a good price!! 

My 400,000 rupiah ticket included a pickup from my hostel in a shared van, the  fast boat ride to the Gili Islands with an open return for a boat back to Bali, plus a van transfer back to anywhere on Bali (including Kuta, Ubud , Seminyak, etc). 

I was picked up at 7am from Kuta to head to Padang Bai pier, which was a 2 hour drive away. The boat ride to Gili Trawangan, the first stop, was about 90 minutes. Then it was a short 10 minutes to Gili Air.

Getting Around Gili Air

The main method to get around Gili Air is by foot – you can get anywhere on the island in 30 minutes! 

Because there aren’t any motorized vehicles on Gili Air, the only alternative to get where you want is by horse and buggy. You’ll find these guys running all around the island transporting tourists and goods alike. Be aware that it seems a bit cruel to the horses to promote this method of transportation. 

Where to Stay on Gili Air

Gili Air is 5km around so wherever your Gili Air accommodation is, it’s never more than a 30 minute walk to get anywhere. Where to stay on Gili Air depends on what you want to experience while staying on the island.

• The  West  side of the island is for those who love eating out, being social, and don’t mind staying near nightlife. If you want to see Gili Air sunsets from your accommodation every day, stay on the West side of Gili Air.
• The Center of the island is where the local population lives, and where you can find the cheapest accommodation on Gili Air. You’ll be surrounded by daily island Indonesian life: mosques, chickens, and playing children.
• The East side of the island is lined with resorts and restaurants that have tables right up to the water. Here you’ll have the most variety in terms of places to stay, and since the water is the calmest, it’s the best place to stay on Gili Air for snorkeling and water sports. 
• The North side of the island is the most serene in my opinion, with cabanas lining the beach outside every hotel. There are also dive shops, and the occasional pub where late-night Gili Air parties happen.

Accommodation on Gili Air

Low budget accommodation:  .

• Begadang  – $9 per night for a private hut for two people, with dorm rooms also available. It’s located on the western side of the island, and the best place to stay on Gili Air for backpackers. Nearby is the beach, many local eateries, convenience stores, and the chilled out Space Bar. There’s a giant mushroom-shaped pool where everyone gathers to socialize.

Medium budget accommodation:

• Bel Air Resort and Spa  – $31-$37 per night for double rooms. Bel Air is on the East side of the island, close to great restaurants on the beach. It has an amazing pool, great service, and the food at their restaurant was some of the best! This is where I stayed for three weeks, and I highly recommend this accommodation on Gili Air.
• Mola2 Resort Gili Air – $44 per night for a suite room for two. Mola2 is located right across from the ocean on the West side of the island, and has a great-value BBQ + buffet restaurant attached to it. It’s a short walk to any of the popular bar, live music, and sunset spots, and a great place to stay on Gili Air. 

High budget accommodation:

• A Villa Gili Air  – $85 for a villa with a private pool. A beautiful property, centrally located, and each villa has a private pool, outdoor kitchenette, massive bed, and a bathtub. For those with the budget, it’s a great place to stay on Gili Air to relax and spend quality time with a partner.
• Pink Coco Gili Air – $70-$100 for a variety of cottages and villas. This property on a secluded section on the north side of the island is hard to miss because of how aggressively pink everything is! There’s a shared pool and plenty of (pink) lounge chairs, and some villas have their own bath tubs and living rooms. The perfect place to stay on Gili Air for girl groups. 

Where to Eat on Gili Air

Low budget: .

Warungs ( Warung Sunny, ZZZ Warung, Warung Bambu, Muslim Warung,  etc). Warungs are local eateries on Gili Air that serve Indonesian food and interpretations of Western food to cater to tourists. 

You can order the standard Nasi or Mie Gorengs (fried rice or fried noodles), Gado-Gado (tofu and vegetables in peanut sauce) and different curries for 25,000-35,000 Indonesian rupiah ($1.80-$2.50) per dish. 

Some Warungs, like  Warung Lalapan Saba  and  Warung Pardia  serve rice on plates or in a cone, and you can add unlimited toppings like fried vegetables, tofu, fried fish, and more, all for a set price of 25,000 rupiah ($1.80). 

Gili Air Guest House Restaurant also serves traditional Indonesian dishes, but with massive portions.

Some people may struggle with the small portions that are standard around Indonesia, and this restaurant was the answer to that problem! A large Nasi Goreng with five extra eggs was only 40,000 rupiah ($2.90), enough for even the hungriest gym bros to feel full until dinner.

Medium Budget:

There are a couple of BBQ restaurants dotting the circumference of Gili Air, that offer a BBQ item off their menu plus all you can eat salad bar. 

My favorite was  D’Maiq Restaurant  in front of  Mola2 Resort . It had several fish and chicken options for BBQ, or tofu/tempe skewers or veggie skewers for vegetarians. Their buffet wasn’t only salad, they had pizza, grilled veggies, potato wedges, soup, bruschetta, and a pasta station!  The value was amazing at 50,000 rupiah ($3.50) for the tofu/tempe skewers, and 80,000 rupiah ($5.70) for BBQ chicken, buffet included! 

$7-$8 is about as high as your food spending will get on Gili Air without alcohol. Some resorts and restaurants will offer imported wines for 75,000 ($5.36) a glass, which can also be purchased by the bottle. Standard cocktail prices are 75,000-100,000 rupiah ($7.14) but are buy-one, get-one free during happy hour!

Things To Do on Gili Air

Water activities.

• Rent snorkeling gear . On the north and east side of the island you can just walk out into the water to see fish and even sea turtles! The standard renting price is 50,000 rupees ($3.50) for a day. Alternatively, go on a  snorkeling day-trip  for cheap.
• Rent stand-up paddle boards or  kayaks  to take out on the calm water on the east side.
• Learn how to scuba dive   with many of the dive shops available on Gili Air. You can take a three-day, Open Water course for  as little as $420  (link for Gili T)!
• Learn how to free-dive ! 

• Snorkeling trips or scuba diving trips   are the most popular on Gili Air, which  take you around the three Gili Islands  to the best spots to see marine wildlife. 
• Deep-sea fishing with local experts
• Tour Lombok with a local  to visit villages and waterfalls
• Trekking to Mt. Ringani summit on Lombok, a  two-day, one-night tour
• Komodo Island boat tour, a four-day, three-night tour that stops off at other islands along the way

Move Your Body (on land)

• Go to the gym!  Gili Air is home to the  Holiday Fit Gili Air Gym Center .   You can workout for 50,000 rupiah ($3.60) a day, or buy weekly subscriptions. There are four AC units inside, and many cardio and free weight machines. There’s an attached cafe too where you can unwind with a smoothie bowl or protein shake after your workout.

• Rent bikes  to circle the island. Try to  rent the bikes with the fat tires , which may allow you to power through sandy sections. 
• Enroll in a yoga or meditation course . Yoga centers on the island include  H2O Yoga  and  Flowers & Fire Yoga . Both have yoga and meditation classes multiple times per day for 120,000 rupiah ($8.60), and have restaurants on site where you can enjoy wholesome food or fresh smoothies after each session. 

Watch Movies

• Flowers & Fire Yoga  has a curry and movie night every Monday, where you can watch a movie and have unlimited vegetarian curry for 80,000 rupiah ($5.70). 
• Hotel Ombak  on the southwest side of Gili Air has movies at 8pm daily for 50,000 rupiah ($3.57). Their property on the beach is lined with lawn chairs and bean bags, and there’s a large screen that the movie is projected on. 

Cooking Classes

Learn some Indonesian cooking styles while visiting Gili Air!  Gili Cooking Classes  is right next to the port, making it easily accessible for those coming from Gili T or Gili Meno. They have classes for learning  four, five, or six  different Indonesian dishes, starting at 290,000 rupiah ($20). 

For 250,000 rupiah ($17.80), try the cooking class at  Warung Sunny  in the center of the island, which is attached to a local eatery and has raving reviews on TripAdvisor.

I was surprised to see there were a dozen or so boutique shops on Gili Air. For those on vacation and looking to bring home some new souvenirs, jewelry, and clothing, there are many shops that line the circumference of the island and some on the main road leading from the pier.

Where to Chill Out on Gili Air

• Gili Lumbung , a bar and restaurant on the west side of Gili Air, was my favorite place to watch Gili Air sunsets. It has dozens of bean bags out on the beach, fairy lights strung up above them, and a stage for live music in the evenings. The staff are friendly and efficient, there are great happy hour cocktail options, and the food there was amazing too! 

• Coffee & Thyme  next to the Gili Air pier is a great option for daytime relaxing and people watching. It has amazing coffees, comfy seats spread out through the garden and restaurant, and a relaxed ambiance although it’s located at one of the busiest parts of the island. 

Where to Party on Gili Air

Gili T isn’t the only island for parties. On specified days, Gili Air’s nightlife explodes as bars host late night raves for locals and tourists alike. Gili Air parties can last until 3am, or if there’s enough people, until the next morning! 

• Cheeky Monkey  is the center of Gili Air’s nightlife, and has their big rave parties on Tuesdays. Their lit DJ booth features progressive and deep house music which you can enjoy on bean bags or at the bar until people start getting up on the dance floor. If you want to experience a Gili Air party, Cheeky Monkey is the place to be. 

• Lucky’s Bar  is a couple properties down the street from Cheeky Monkey bar. Lucky’s has trance and techno parties on their day of the week (varies).
• Space Bar , famous for their mushroom shakes, are always blasting their hard trance music but has the biggest Gili Air parties on Wednesdays. Many people start the party here, then head to Legend’s Bar on the north side of the island.
• Legend’s Bar , an Aussie-expat owned reggae-themed bar, has Gili Air parties on Wednesday night until Thursday morning, with deep house music. 

Renewing your Indonesian Visa from Gili Air

Want to stay longer on Gili Air?

Many visitors to Indonesia plan to stay for 2 months, instead of the 30 days that the free visa allows. If you purchased an Indonesian visa upon arrival and want to extend it while you’re on Gili Air – there’s an immigration office close by in Lombok !

You’ll have to make two trips from Gili Air to Lombok’s immigration office. The first visit is to drop off your passport and fill out the paperwork, the second is about 5 days later to pick up your passport and visa.

The boat to Lombok costs 20,000 ($1.40) rupiah, and a 45-minute taxi to the immigration office costs about 200,000 rupiah ($14). You’ll need your entry and exit flight information, a copy of the photo page in your passport, and 350,000 rupiah ($25).

Wow, Gili Air looks beautiful and it’s nice to have different island options because I feel like Bali seems to be the default. The food looks so good too, and I love that you can do some good snorkling. Will keep this as a reference for the future!

The 4D3N Lombok Komodo Island boat trip is the best sailing trip from Lombok to Komodo National Park. This Komodo boat trip is organized by our team Lombok touristic adventure. You will enjoy snorkeling, swimming with the whale sharks, exploring the island, and beautiful beaches, hiking, and seeing the Komodo Dragons.

This boat trip will start from east Lombok harbor. You will have a free pick-up from your hotel in Senggigi, Mataram, Bangsal, Gili Air, and Gili Trawangan. Our team will drive you to the Senggigi office for briefing and manage to get on the minibus to East Lombok harbor.

Day 1: Lombok to Kanawa Island

Pick up from your hotel in Senggigi and Bangsal Harbor, if you stay on Gili Islands. The picks up between 09.00 to 10.30 AM from Bangsal. Then drive to the office in Senggigi for a short briefing about the trip.

After that, at 11.30 AM depart from Senggigi to Labuhan Lombok, the port where you will start the tour. It takes about 2 hours to get there and then you will be boarding at 02.30 PM.

The first to visit is Kanawa Island, it takes about 2 hours to get to Kanawa Island. After that, at about 06.00 pm continued to Saleh Bay. Overnight on the boat to Saleh Bay, dinner will be ready at about 08.00 pm.

Kanawa Island is a small island located west of Sumbawa Island. The island offers beautiful views from a small hill with Savanah. It is perfect for sunrise and sunset. Besides that, the island is also perfect for snorkeling and swimming, with beautiful coral, and a variety of fish.

Day 2: Snorkeling with Whale Shark at Saleh Bay

Today you are on Saleh Bay, spend about 6 hours getting to this Bay from Kanawa Island. You will start snorkeling and seeking Whale sharks. Saleh Bayis the place where you can see the schools of Whale Sark, it is located north of Sumbawa island, West Nusa Tenggara.

What you expect to do is:

• Snorkeling with Whale Share on Saleh Bay
• Feed the Whale shark and take pictures

Day 3: Gili Lawa Island, Pink Beach, and Rinca Island

Leave Saleh Bay at 11.00 AM and then sail to Gili Lawa Island for about 18 hours. Having dinner and overnight on the boat. You will be at Gili Lawa Island around 08.00 am. Spend hours of activity here and then leave the place at about 10.30 am.

The next visit is Pink Beach, spend about 1 hour at Pink Beach. After that, you will continue to Rinca Island. Overnight on the boat at Kalong Island and enjoy the island.

What you expect to do are:

• Swimming and snorkeling at Pink Beach and enjoying the beautiful corals with crystal clear water with a variety of fish.
• Trekking and seeing the Komodo Dragons on Rinca Island
• Sunset on Kalong Island while seeing the bats flying over the island.

Day 4: Kelor Island, Manjarite, and Labuan Bajo

Today you are sailing to Kelor Island and Manjarite Beach. You will explore these two places before getting to Labuan Bajo. After snorkeling at Manjarite beach, you will continue to Labuan Bajo, you will arrive at 14.00.

Gili islands consist of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. These islands are located on the North Lombok Regency and are under the North Lombok administration.

Gili Trawangan is the largest and the most developed among the three Gilis. Gili Meno is a tiny island which is located in the middle or between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan. Gili Air is the closest island to the mainland of Lombok.

The three Gilis are the most visited and the main tourist destinations on the North Lombok. Gili islands are also recognized as party islands, especially Gili Trawangan and Gili Air. Meanwhile, Gili Meno is a much-relaxed island to spend time on holiday.

Getting to Gili Islands

The islands are accessible by boat from Bali, Lombok, and Nusa Lembongan. Here is what you can consider if you visit the Gilis:

• Ferry from Padang Bai - Bali leaves every hour. You can get the ticket at the official ticket office at the harbor in Padang Bai. The ferry from Bali takes about 5 to 6 hours to Lembar - Lombok. After that, you can get in the car to Bangsal, then get on the local boat. It will take about 10 hours from Bali in total.
• Flight from Denpasar or Jakarta to Lombok International Airport. If your flight is from Denpasar, you need to spend about 35 minutes on the flight. And then getting on the taxi to Bangsal for about 1 1/2 hours. Then take a local boat.

Komodo Island Tour Package from Gili Trawangan

The Komodo island tour package from Gili Trawangan is one of the best ways to explore Komodo National Park. The private cabin cost $250 per person. On the boat tour to Komodo island, there is only two private cabin room available on the boat. So you will need to make an advance booking for a private cabin.

History of Omsk

Foundation of omsk.

The need to build a Russian fortress on the banks of the Irtysh at the mouth of the Om River arose in connection with the steppe nomadic peoples. In particular, with the Oirats, whose tribes in the first decades of the 17th century began to appear within the borders of the Russian state being under the onslaught of their external enemies and as a result of internal civil strife. However, various foreign and domestic political problems of Russia hindered the development and defense of the South Siberian borders.

The situation changed only at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Russian conquest of Siberia intensified. Since Peter I paid great attention to geographical research in the south, the expeditions of that time combined socio-political tasks and tasks of scientific research.

One of such expeditions was led by the Russian military and statesman, associate of Peter I, Major General Ivan Bukhgolts. The goals of the expedition, numbering about 3,000 people, were to search for ore and gold deposits, the discovery of trade routes to India and China, as well as the construction of towns on the Irtysh River.

The expedition left Tobolsk to the south along the Irtysh in July 1715. In the spring of 1716, after a conflict with the Dzungars in the north of today’s Kazakhstan, the remnants of the expedition (about 700 people) withdrew to the mouth of the Om River, where they laid a new fortress named Omsky ostrog (fortified settlement).

According to the census of 1725, 992 people lived in the fortress, in 1742 - 1,092 people. From the first years of its existence, it served as a place of exile for prisoners. After serving hard labor and imprisonment, a lot of them stayed in Omsk for permanent residence.

Omsk in the second half of the 18th century

The ethnic composition of the region’s population was formed in the process of settling the territory. Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, and representatives of many other nationalities were sent here to serve or were exiled. The indigenous people of the region were the Siberian Tatars and Kazakhs, who switched to a sedentary lifestyle.

The foundation of the second Omsk fortress took place in 1762. The first fortress, although it occupied a favorable geographical position, was wooden and, by the middle of the 18th century, it was dilapidated. In 1765, new stone fortifications were constructed. The first stone structure of the fortress was the Resurrection Military Cathedral, built in 1773 and preserved to this day.

In the end of the 18th century, the Omsk fortress was one of the largest structures in the eastern part of the Russian Empire, its area was more than 30 hectares. In 1782, it was transformed into a town named Omsk within the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1785, the coat of arms of Omsk was approved.

Omsk became the center of management of the Siberian transport routes and the Siberian Cossack army, which not only guarded the South Siberian borders, but also made a huge contribution to the economic development of the steppe expanses of Kazakhstan, the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire.

Omsk in the 19th century

The fire of 1819 destroyed almost half of the town including the archive and the magistrate of Omsk with all the first archival documents. Therefore information about the life of Omsk in the 18th - early 19th centuries is scarce and fragmentary. In 1825, the population of the town was about 9,000 people.

In 1829, the town’s development plan was approved. It was made by the famous Petersburg architect V.I. Geste, who took the city of St. Petersburg as a model with its wide avenues, huge neighborhoods, fountains, cast-iron bridges, and an abundance of green spaces.

The composition of the population of Omsk was not quite usual. In the middle of the 19th century, since Omsk was the center of the military and civil administration, the proportion of the military in the local population reached about 60%.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature), who served a term of hard labor in the Omsk prison in 1850-1854, in a letter to his brother gave Omsk the following description: “Omsk is a disgusting town. There are almost no trees. In summer, heat and wind with sand, in winter, a snowstorm. I have not seen nature. The town is dirty, military and highly depraved.”

By the second half of the 19th century, Omsk in its development outstripped many steppe towns and became not only an administrative, but also a commercial and industrial center. In 1861, in Omsk, there were 2,122 houses (31 stone houses), 34 factories and plants, about 20 thousand residents.

In 1892, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, which gave a new impetus to the economy of Siberian towns and positively influenced Omsk. The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway caused an increase in the urban population due to migrants who came to work from the central part of the Russian Empire. According to the 1897 census, 37.3 thousand people lived in Omsk. The town had 14 streets with a total length of more than 140 km and 13 squares.

Omsk in the first half of the 20th century

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great changes for Siberia. Mass peasant colonization caused a sharp leap in the development of the region’s economy, primarily its agrarian sector, and the Trans-Siberian Railway ensured the inclusion of the local economy in the system of the All-Russian and European markets.

Due to its favorable economic and geographical position - at the intersection of the railway and the Irtysh River, in the middle of a vast agricultural territory - Omsk quickly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia and Governor-Generalship of the Steppes (Eastern and Central Kazakhstan).

Wholesale trade in bread, butter and other agricultural products was concentrated here. Omsk also became one of the industrial, social and cultural centers of Western Siberia. By 1903, the city’s population grew to 60 thousand people. In 1914, it had about 134.8 thousand residents. Omsk became the most populous city in Siberia.

During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, from June 1918 to November 1919, Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who declared this city the capital of white Russia opposing red Russia of the Bolsheviks. Soviet power was finally established in the city in 1920.

In the summer of 1921, an event took place that had a decisive impact on the cultural and economic life of Omsk. The functions of the administrative center of Siberia were transferred from it to the city of Novonikolaevsk (future Novosibirsk). In 1934, Omsk became the administrative center of a separate Omsk Oblast.

Over the years of industrialization, Omsk became one of the largest centers for agricultural engineering in the USSR. The metal-working industry also developed at a rapid pace. In 1939, Omsk numbered more than 288 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 200 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk, as well as 60 hospitals, dozens of educational institutions, theaters, museums, and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

In the post-war years, new enterprises were put into operation in Omsk, all existing factories and plants were reconstructed and expanded. The industrial potential of the city was also strengthened by the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in the country. In connection with the rapid development of industry, especially petrochemical enterprises, the ecological situation deteriorated. The concentration of harmful substances in the air sharply increased. In 1964, the population of Omsk was about 702 thousand people.

In the 1970s-1980s, Omsk developed rapidly. In 1975, the city’s population exceeded 1 million. The most pressing problem was the ecological situation. Omsk was in the top 10 cities of Russia in terms of environmental pollution. Another problem that required an immediate solution was the development of passenger transport. The capacity of Omsk streets was exhausted, and therefore the construction of the subway became an urgent issue.

The economic crisis that gripped Russia after the collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economy of Omsk and the region as a whole. There was a significant decline in industrial production, construction volumes fell, and unemployment rose. A lot of organizations of the defense complex, research institutes, and design bureaus found themselves in a deep crisis without the state defense order.

The share of mechanical engineering and metalworking, light industry, and, to a lesser extent, chemical and petrochemical, forestry and woodworking industries decreased. At the same time, the share of the fuel industry, energy, and construction materials industry began to grow.

In the 2000s, Omsk again became one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia with a developing mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, various branches of the woodworking, construction industry, and a highly productive agro-industrial complex. In recent years, Omsk has also acquired the features of one of the largest Siberian centers of entrepreneurship and banking/financial activities.

Omsk - Features

Omsk is located in the south of the West Siberian Plain at the confluence of the Om River into the Irtysh, about 150 km from the border of Russia with Kazakhstan. About 60% of all residents of Omsk Oblast live in Omsk. The City Day of Omsk is celebrated on the first Saturday of August.

The city’s coat of arms is very similar to the first coat of arms of Omsk approved by Empress Catherine II in 1785. It depicts a part of the brick fortifications, which symbolizes the reason for its foundation as a fortress and the center of the Siberian defensive line.

Omsk belongs to the temperate climatic zone with a continental climate of the forest-steppe of the West Siberian belt. It is distinguished by an abundance of sunlight. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.6 degrees Celsius. The highest wind speeds are observed in winter and spring, which is the reason for frequent snow and dust storms.

In the past, the ecological situation in Omsk was very unfavorable. Since 2011, the city’s environmental development rating has increased significantly. This was the result of large-scale modernization of many large industries (including the Omsk oil refinery). Today, road transport is the main source of air pollution in the city.

The level of pollution of the Omsk rivers - Irtysh and Om - remains consistently high. Swimming in them is prohibited. While industrial effluents are becoming more environmentally friendly, sewers are releasing waste products including diesel fuel and petroleum products into the rivers. Dust raised by dust storms is also a serious problem for the city as it contains a lot of harmful substances including lead.

The city’s industry is based on oil refining, petrochemistry, chemical industry, mechanical engineering (production of aerospace equipment, armored vehicles, agricultural equipment). Omsk is a major transport junction - the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from west to east, and the navigable Irtysh River crosses it from south to north. Omsk Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Surgut, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Salekhard, Kazan, Krasnodar, Sochi.

The unfinished subway of Omsk has become famous in Russia thanks to its only one fully built station. Its construction began back in 1992. However, due to funding problems, the completion of the first line was postponed numerous times. In 2019, it was finally decided to permanently stop construction. For local residents, because of the long wait for the completion of the construction, the Omsk metro symbolizes unrealizable hopes, they talk about it with irony.

In Omsk, there are practically no buildings higher than 50 meters, according to this parameter it is one of the lowest cities with a population of over one million. 130 architectural monuments are concentrated in the central part of the city, almost half of the total number.

Main Attractions of Omsk

Dormition Cathedral - the largest church in Omsk located in the very center of the city. The original church was built in 1891-1898. In 1935, it was completely destroyed. In 2005-2007, an exact copy of the building was restored in its original place. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Omsk. Irtysh Embankment - the main walking street of Omsk with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River. Built in the middle of the 20th century, the embankment was reconstructed in the 2000s. You can walk along the alley on foot, ride rollerblades or a bike.

Merchant Batyushkin’s Mansion (1902). This architectural monument is located on the Irtysh Embankment. It is also known as the Kolchak’s House because Alexander Kolchak, the Supreme Ruler of Russia, lived in this building in 1919. One part of the building is occupied by the registry office of the Central District of Omsk. The Center for the Study of the History of the Russian Civil War is also open here. Omsk State Museum of History and Local Lore - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and Russia founded in 1878. In total, this museum has over 200 thousand various objects of cultural, historical and artistic value. The museum is especially proud of such exhibits as the cast-iron figures of the Chinese lions Shi-Tzu, presented to the museum from China in 1895, as well as the skeleton of a woolly mammoth almost 3 meters high. Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts named after M.A. Vrubel - one of the largest museums of fine arts in Siberia. It has collections of foreign and Russian art from antiquity to the present day. In total, there are over 22 thousand works by painters, graphic artists and sculptors, as well as more than 1.5 thousand rare folios.

Walking through the exhibition halls, you can admire the canvases of Shishkin, Aivazovsky, Surikov, Repin, Serov, Vereshchagin. The exhibition of rare icons dating from the 17th-20th centuries is of constant interest among visitors, as well as a unique collection of jewelry made of precious metals found in the Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds. Two buildings of the museum are located at Lenina Street 3 and 23.

In November 2019, a new exhibition was opened in a historical building at Muzeynaya Street, 4 - the exhibition of art of the 20th-21st centuries. The Hermitage-Siberia Center is located here too - the first representation of The State Hermitage Museum (the second-largest art museum in the world) beyond the Urals.

Chokana Valikhanova Street - a pedestrian street located in the historic part of Omsk. The street is decorated with abstract architectural forms, flower beds, wrought-iron lanterns. The walking area ends with an observation deck with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River.

Museum of Kondraty Belov . The museum of this landscape painter born in Omsk can be found in a picturesque wooden house, which is considered one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Omsk. The exposition tells about the life and work of Kondraty Belov, as well as about the history of the building itself.

In total, this museum has about 700 exhibits. The permanent exhibition also includes works by Kondraty Belov’s son Stanislav and paintings by some other local artists. In addition, temporary exhibitions of contemporary Omsk artists are regularly held here. Chokana Valikhanova Street, 10.

Plumber Stepanych Monument - an unusual sculpture located in the center of Omsk, which you can literally stumble upon while walking along Lenin Street between the houses #12 and #14. Leaning out of the hatch, the plumber is depicted as realistic and life-size as possible. It is among the most photographed monuments in Omsk. There is a similar sculpture in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Lyuba Monument . This sculpture, located on the opposite side of Lenin Street from the monument to the plumber Stepanych, is especially loved by Omsk residents and tourists, who love to be photographed against its background.

This beauty in a lace dress with a neckline and a crinoline sitting on an openwork bench and reading a novel had a real prototype - Lyubov (diminutively Lyuba or Lyubasha) Gasford, the wife of the Governor-General of Siberia, who lived in Omsk in the 19th century and died at a young age due to illness. One of the streets of Omsk and the park are named in her memory. She is a local symbol of femininity and beauty.

Park of Culture and Rest named after the 30th anniversary of the Komsomol - a popular place for walks, recreation and entertainment of Omsk residents and tourists, which has retained “the spirit of the Soviet era” in its name. Today, on an area of 73 hectares, several zones have been organized, various types of recreation are presented. There are walking alleys, ponds, water activities, for example, riding on hydro-scooters.

The ice town is open in winter, the Return of the Dinosaurs exhibition - in summer. The “House Upside Down” exposition is also popular with tourists. Natural Park “Bird Harbor” - a specially protected area located on the path of bird migration in the central part of Omsk. During autumn flights, up to 3 thousand birds stop here for rest. The park is situated in the floodplain on the left bank of the Irtysh River next to the Victory Park on Yeniseyskaya Street.
