About Sunway Safaris

WELCOME TO SUNWAY SAFARIS   Looking for a quality small group safari vacation in Southern Africa at an affordable price, with knowledgeable guides and like minded travellers? Sunway has been creating memories for adventurous Africa travellers for more than 20 years. We specialise in value for money small group camping safaris and accommodated tours that include wildlife safaris, walking and trekking holidays, cultural tours, safari holidays and overland journeys. Please visit our African Destinations page for more information on the different countries we visit. You can book one of our regular, scheduled Southern African safari vacation packages as a couple, a family, friends or solo as a single traveller. Alternatively we can arrange a private group tour to suit your requirements.

Questions & Answers

What food can i expect while on safari.

Sunway will provide three scrumptious meals per day, unless specified in the itinerary [B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner], from lunch on the day of departure until breakfast on the last day of your tour. Good healthy meals make happy travelers. The tour leaders do all the shopping and meal planning for each group. He/she will always try to obtain fresh produce wherever possible. Each tour has 1 cool box / freezer for the meats and fresh produce only, and 1 cool box for drinks. We do cater for special dietary requirements. Please bring this to our attention at time of booking. A rough idea of what meals can be expected: Breakfast - Cereals and milk or bread/toast, jam and fruit with coffee and tea or the occasional cooked breakfast. Lunch - Cheese, cold meats, fish, fruit, pasta salads and bread or rolls. Dinner - Potjies (stews), braais (barbecue), stir fries, curries etc prepared on a wood fire or gas stove. On several nights we visit local restaurants, which because of individual tastes will be an own expense meal.

Do I need malaria tablets?

Yes, Malaria prophylaxes are required on all of the safaris that we offer. Some trips, like the South Africa Scenic or Rainbow Route, are only in a Malaria area for 5 days, while others, such as the Zambia, Malawi & Mozambique Trade Route, travel through malaria areas for all 21 days. Your tour leader will advise you when you enter a malaria area, and when you exit a malaria area. Do not be put off visiting Southern Africa because of malaria. Realistically most of Southern Africa is low risk area and if you use prophylaxis, use insect repellent and cover up at dusk with long shirt or trousers, the chances are very low that you would contract malaria. Of the thousands of clients that Sunway has carried since 1994 we know of only 1 case of a client contracting malaria, and only a handful of guides (and remember that the guides do not even use the tablets). Clients visiting Malawi and Mozambique should pay most attention to precautions as those two countries are warm and wetter, and therefore have higher incidence of malaria. Please contact your local physician for latest information on malaria prophylaxis and what type of prophylaxis will be best suited for the area that you are visiting. If you feel when you get home that you have flu like symptoms, headache, stiffness, nausea, fever, then it’s best to consult your doctor immediately. Remember that prophylaxis do mask the symptoms, so get checked out – and remember to tell your doctor that you’ve been to a malaria area. Malaria is easily treatable if detected early.

Are mosquito nets provided?

If you are joining a camping trip, the Sunway tents have mosquito netting on the windows and door. Mosquitoes spend the heat of the day in shaded areas, so please remember to keep the mosquito net on the door closed during the day too, so that mosquitoes do not enter your tent. At night, you can sleep with the tent window flaps open, and the door rolled up, but remember to keep the mosquito net zipped closed. This will keep out the little biting things (like mosquitos) and the big biting things (like lion and hyena Smile). On the accommodated safaris, if we visit a malaria area, or a place with mosquitoes, then the accommodation will have nets provided. In areas where there are low numbers of mosquitoes and/or no malaria, mosquito nets will not be provided. These include places such as Knysna, Hermanus, Cape Town, Swakopmund, Windhoek etc.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and a towel?

If you are joining a camping trip, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag (and small camp pillow) and a towel. Should you not have, or do not want to buy a sleeping bag, you can rent a sleeping bag and camp pillow from the Sunway office for Euro 1 per sleeping bag per day on tour. Please book this at the time of booking. On the accommodated safaris, all bedding is provided, and you will not be required to bring a sleeping bag or pillow. When we do stay in areas where sleeping bags are required (such as the tented camp in the Okavango Delta) sleeping bags and pillows will be provided. At most accommodation establishments, towels will be provided, but it is always a good idea to bring a small travel towel for the beach or swimming pool.

Are there luggage restrictions?

Due to space and weight limitations within each safari vehicle, luggage should be kept to a maximum of 12kgs per person (excluding camera equipment / day bag). The bag should be of a soft sided duffel bag / back pack design – no hard cases or hard sided bags will be accepted. While many people feel that they will need their full quota of 20kgs, people quickly realise that they have packed far too much.

Can I use a credit card while on Safari?

Yes, Mastercard and Visa credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Southern Africa. American Express is not widely used in Southern Africa. You’ll be able to use credit card to pay for most restaurant meals, and at most formal shops (although there may be a time delay in the check out queue.) Optional activities in Cape Town, Swakopmund, Maun and Livingstone can also be paid by credit card. More specific details available in the downloadable Sunway general information dossier.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, all clients travelling on a Sunway safari are required to have their own comprehensive travel insurance. The travel insurances needs to cover lost luggage, missed flights and most importantly comprehensive medical cover in the un-likely event of you being injured while on safari. Please note that while most credit card companies offer travel insurance if you have bought your airline ticket on your credit card, we have found that cover is not sufficient for adventure travel in Africa. We strongly recommend you buy additional specific travel insurance. You need to buy this insurance in your home country, before you travel and your local Sunway travel agent can assist you with this.

What is the age limit?

The minimum age for our guests is 12 years old, although we do occasionally make exceptions depending on the specific itinerary, the group make-up and sometimes during our low season. Please note that a child of 12-17 years will only be accepted for travel with an accompanying adult. On some of our safaris we camp wild in remote areas and these campsites are not fenced, so it is possible for wild animals do enter the campsite. It is important that parents make sure that the children listen and follow the guide’s safety instructions. Parents are also required to supervise their children at all times so as not to affect the enjoyment of the tour for any other clients. We, as Sunway, do not believe that age should be a determining factor on the enjoyment of life! Therefore we do not have an upper age limit. But clients who are older than 65yrs are required to submit a doctor’s report stating that they are fit and healthy and that they will be able to undertake a safari that includes a moderate level of physical activity, some long driving days and some moderate day walks. This is not an onerus document, but rather an indication that the client is aware of the style of tour that they will be joining, and capable of participating in all activities on tour. We've found that we have many fit and healthy clients who are over 65 years of age, join Sunway trips, and put the younger clients to shame on the mountain walks!

Itinerary Summary

Limited Participation:  An essential part of your safari is some participation. From carrying your own bag to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. There are some long days with early starts so we all need to get involved to make the trip run efficiently. Where the tour leaders provide meals we ask that clients help (on rotation) with the washing up.

Note: There have been some changes to this tour for 2025. Please contact us for the 2025 itinerary.

Cape Town to Namibia is a variety filled journey providing the best opportunities to explore the vast unique beauty of Namibia. Highlights include the spectacular Western Cape, the Fish River Canyon, the Namib Desert and Etosha NP.

Day 1 CAPE TOWN   [hotel - - -] Cape Town is one of the most picturesque cities in the world, with the majestic Table Mountain providing its central focus. Departing, after a tour briefing, from Cape Town at 08:00am we visit Hout Bay harbour en route to Cape Point Nature Reserve and then the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach. We sample some of Cape Town’s culinary wonders at a local restaurant in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (own expense).

Day 2 CEDERBERG   [chalet BLD] [B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner] The Cederberg is a massive rock wilderness with giant sandstone boulders that have been sculpted by wind and rain into bizarre and artistic shapes. We head north to the Cederberg and explore the rugged landscape on foot before relaxing in chalets for the evening.

Day 3 GARIEP RIVER   [lodge BLD] We make our way into the more arid regions and upon entering Namibia, we stay at a lodge on the Gariep River. Namibia’s southern border river flows quietly and peacefully and the river valley is hardly affected by tourism. The riverbed is sandy, the water clean and clear. Time free for swimming and relaxing or you can adventure down the river in canoes (own expense).

Day 4 FISH RIVER CANYON   [lodge BLD] The Fish River Canyon, situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River, is one of the most impressive natural beauties in the southern part of Namibia. With its depth of up to 550 metres, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. After a visit to the canyon, we make our way to our overnight accommodation.

Day 5 - 6 NAMIB DESERT   [lodge BLD] The parched Namib Desert has endless orange dunes blown into sharp ridges by the sand-shifting wind and at Sossusvlei they form a gateway into the Namib Desert. We will walk to Sossusvlei, explore Sesriem Canyon and from the comfort of our lodge outside the national park watch dramatic sunsets over the world’s highest sand dunes.(If you prefer not to do the 4km walk to Sossusvlei there is an optional own expense 4WD transfer.)

Day 7 – 8 SWAKOPMUND   [hotel pension Bx2 Lx1-] Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort with a slightly nostalgic atmosphere, characterized by numerous colonial buildings. In terms of flora, both the Welwitschias Mirabilis and the Kokerboom grow on the stony plains of the Namib and many beautiful specimens surround the coastal town. Swakopmund is also the adventure activity capital of Namibia. Day free to explore the town or try dune boarding (own expense).

Day 9 DAMARALAND   [chalet BLD] Namibia is a land of great contrasts and Damaraland demonstrates this with stark plains and ancient valleys leading to rocky outcrops and the soaring peaks of the Brandberg Massive Mountains. On our way north we will visit the Cape Cross seal colony where thousands of Cape fur seals come ashore to rest and have their pups.

Day 10 - 11 ETOSHA NP   [guest lodge BLD] Once a vast lake fed by the Kunene River, the pan that is Etosha NP dried up thousands of years ago when the river waters chose a new course. Etosha is big game country. We take game drives around the huge pan to find the elephants, herds of antelope and lions around the waterholes. We stay at a lodge on the outskirts of the national park.

Day 12 WINDHOEK   [guest house BL-] This pretty town, beautifully situated in a valley, combines the architecture of a modern city with numerous buildings in the style of the German colonial era. The charm of the city of Windhoek lies in its harmonious blend of African and European cultures and the friendliness of its people. We visit the cosmopolitan capital and enjoy a restaurant meal (own expense).

Day 13 WINDHOEK - TOUR ENDS   [B--] Tour ends at 08:00 at the guesthouse. Transfers to airport available on request

sunway safaris erfahrungen

This tour departs at 08h00 from the pre-tour accommodation guest house in Cape Town, South Africa. You will therefore need to fly into Cape Town International airport (CPT), the day before the tour starts.

The tour ends at approximately 08h00 after breakfast at the overnight guest house in Windhoek, Namibia. You can therefore book your outbound flight from Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDK) for the last day of the tour. Windhoek airport is approximately 50km to the east of Windhoek city, so you will need to book an airport transfer with time to spare.

  • Responsible Tourism

During our stay in Damaraland a local guide takes us to visit a San Bushman Rock Art site. A conservation partnership was signed in 2003 and the community benefit through employment and a percentage of the income of the lodge. Our walks to view the busman rock art are led by a local community guide. The local community directly benefits from your visit through the employment of the local guide and the entrance fees.

Conservation is not possible without the involvement of local communities and this arrangement ensures the preservation of these amazing rock art sites.

We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).

If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc)

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town and the western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, meaning winter rain and long dry summer. The rest of the country has summer rains, frequently in short thunder storms that roll across the peninsula from the southern ocean fronts.

This tour, the Cape to Namibia, starts in the Cape but moves up the west coast into the Northern Cape which has a similar climate to Namibia.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT NAMIBIA

The Namib desert landscapes form a magnificent backdrop for a spectacular safari. Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, and flanked by the cold Atlantic Ocean, Namibia has a desert climate for the most part and there can be large differences in day and night temperatures, low rainfall and overall low humidity.

June :– The nights are colder and can drop below 10°C/50°F. In desert areas, it can be freezing. Days are still pleasant around 20-24°C/68-75°F with clear blue skies.

July & August :– Winter morning game drives can be cold at an average minimum of 7°C/45°F, so dress in layers with a windproof jacket and beanie. The average daily temperature reaches 21-25°C/70-77°F but can fall to below freezing at night in the deserts and higher altitude areas.

September & October :– Spring is lovely. It isn't too hot, but the mornings are less chilly. The skies are clear and during October the green vegetation is fading as the heat builds up. October can be extremely hot.

Green season is from November to April : Photography is amazing at this time, with wonderful light,  dramatic lightning, and thunders storm cloud formations. Wildlife revels in the bounty of summer and life is good.

November :– By now it is hot, but with the humidity still low, it is pleasant. On average, the days are above 30°C/86°F, but it can be a lot higher in the desert.

December :– The first rains arrive and the temperature drops. The landscape changes after the first rains and everything comes to life. For the lucky you might experience the rare phenomenon of rain in the Namib Desert.

January & February :– Tends to be hot and humid with temperatures around 30-35°C/86-95°F and over 40°C/104°F in the desert. There may be downpours in the afternoon but not every day. Mornings are usually clear.

March & April :– Rainfall stops around April. It cools down and the nights start to get cold. Average day temperatures are around 25-30°C/77-86°F.

Jan Glen – 12Jun24

I just wanted to drop a note to say how much I enjoyed the trip I did (12-24 June 2024). The organisation was excellent and everything ran very smoothly. The standard of the accommodation was very good and the food was great. Some of the long drives on the rough roads were challenging at times, but there were always suitable stops to break it up a bit. I loved Namibia and hope to visit again some time. What really made the trip so enjoyable was our great guides Stephen and Mayi. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them. They were both very knowledgeable and made the trip great fun. My thanks to Stephen and Mayi and the whole Sunway team

Marke and Denise Bluck - 13Sep18

On the 14 July 2018, my wife and I commenced tour SAa17 then CVa21 from Johannesburg. We were treated to a magnificent experience. The first tour had just four participants whilst the second had a full load of twelve. I am writing to express our admiration for our two guides , Pumi and Farai. Your company is blest to have two guides that not only made us enjoy our trip so much, but kept us safe, fully entertained, well fed, and on top of that their shared knowledge about the wildlife and local environment was extraordinary. No request was ever too much for them, and both guides went out of their way to enhance our safaris. During the course of the journey, Denise and I were treated to many in - depth discussions about the daily lives of the people, the difficulties they face, the cultural issues that exist in all the countries we visited. Their intelligence and empathy was a credit to them and we respected their thoughtful ideas that widened our views and made us curious to know more. The effort spent to make game drives successful was awesome. We spent many hours appreciating the habits of the animals and the vast knowledge the two guides imparted about animal behaviour expanded our knowledge and awareness of wildlife and the issues round their continued survival in the future. Sunway is fortunate to have such dedicated guides , they are a real asset to your company. Thank you for making our two expeditions unforgettable.

John Johnston - 11Feb15

A first class trip. Variety, excellent lodge, well planned driving days, good food and sensible timing.

Nancy Daniels - 06Nov14

After my Botswana trip I had high expecations but this trip was superb!! Great guides and they were very enthusiastic.

Muir Family - 09Jul14

Dear Shaun I hope this finds you well. We have just returned home to Glasgow this morning following our trip to Namibia and it was one of the best we have been on - and we are a well travelled family! We were very fortunate to have wonderful co-travellers on this trip, but I was really keen to let to you know that the trip was made for us by your guides - Chris Van Brakel & Farai Chigwada - but esp Chris. We always felt very safe and secure when he was driving - and he did a phenomenal amount of driving!! He was also really well informed - flora, fauna & ecology - but happy to listen to others too. However, for us as a family, the most important things were his warmth, support, charm and sense of humour and we would love to travel through Africa again with him! Many thanks to Sunway Safaris and all the best from Scotland! Vimty, Keith, Indie & Krish

Susanne Schlesinger - 24Oct12

Dear Richard I'm back home from the trip to South Africa and Namibia and settled at my desk again. It was a pity that I didn't had the chance to meeting you and hope we meet next time. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to travel from Capetown to Windhoek - it was a great experience! The tour was fantastic - the route, the Safaritruck, the tour guides, the accommodation, the food, the places we visited, the game drives - it was all more than perfect! I haven't been on a tour like that and couldn't imagine how much fun it is to travel with a small group. Capetown was a bit wet the first day, but we made the best of it and from the second day it was dry and sunny. I really enjoyed the canoeing trip on the Gariep River and also the Quadbiking at Desert Explorer in Swakopmund - this fun should not be missed, can just recommend it. I didn't expect that Namibia has so much varieties in landscapes and deserts. Its the perfect choice for people who travel to Africa for the first time. Cannot wait to see more of South Africa and Botswana. The truck was the perfect vehicle - we met a lot of other (bigger) groups and self drivers and I didn't want to sit in a big airconditioned coach or a car driving myself on these gravel roads. Maxwell was a fantastic driver and had such a tremendous knowledge about the countries, people, plants and animals - all of us learned so much new things. We also felt very safe all the time. In just one accommodation (Cedar Mountains) we had a shared bathroom, all the others were en suite in most lovely places - wished we could have stayed longer. Couldn't say which I liked most - all of them were unique in perfect locations. We expected huts or other basic accommodation and were surprised every day! We were also surprised about Jonathans cooking - the meals were just georgeous! He is a real chef - we couldn't have had better catering. I also really liked the picknick lunches and the romantic atmosphere at the Braai dinners and so did the others. I took loads of photos and have to sort them them out. I would be happy to share them with you as a little reward for this phantastic tour! If you need further information or wish to use this mail for customers comments please go ahead. Thanks so much again for let me taking part and say hello to Maxwell and Jonathan. Best regards, Susanne (also in behalf of my friend Tanja who travelled with me).

Rules, Safety, and Etiquette

Safari West is the home of more than 800 wild animals, with all their natural behaviors and instincts. They are not trained pets, so we must act in accordance with their world rather than expecting them to understand ours. We are pleased to offer you a truly enjoyable and memorable adventure on the Sonoma Serengeti, so to get the most from your visit, please keep these few common-sense safety rules in mind and practice your wild manners.

Respect our Wild Friends

  • Please stay at least three feet back from the animal enclosures.
  • These animals are not to be touched . Be especially aware of children who may not understand that these animals are not like your pets at home. They may bite, kick or otherwise defend themselves if startled.
  • If you see anyone harassing the animals, throwing objects or poking sticks into the animal enclosures, or teasing them in any way, please alert a staff member immediately.
  • Never feed the animals. They eat special diets in the wild, and the Safari West animal staff sees that they enjoy the same appropriate foods here. Snacks that you love can be harmful to them.
  • No running! The animals interpret running as a sign of danger and are likely to panic and hurt themselves.

Safari Truck Etiquette

We recycle! Throughout the lower area of the preserve are recycling bins. Please save your plastic water bottles, soft drink cans, and other recyclables until you can dispose of them in a bin. Children who wish to sit on the top of our double-decker truck must be at least 45 inches tall. Our guides stop occasionally along the drive to allow seat changes so that everyone who wants a top-tier ride will get a turn.

Lost and Found

Safari West is not responsible for lost items. Please keep a close eye on your belongings during the course of your stay as you will be exploring a large, mostly undeveloped preserve. Should you misplace an item, Safari West maintains a Lost and Found Location at the front office. Please check with us there if you should lose (or find) anything of value.

Welcome to Safari West!

We go to great lengths to ensure that our safari adventures are accessible to everyone and in compliance with all ADA requirements. If you or a member of your family have special needs due to mobility or sensory issues, please contact us and we’ll work with you to plan your safari excursion. Safari West is indeed a special place and we will do everything possible to provide our guests with equal enjoyment of the wonderful experience offered by our park.

Our classic safari vehicles are customized Dodge Power Wagons and are not ADA accessible and unfortunately are not equipped to handle wheelchairs or other mobility assisting devices. If a guest utilizing a wheelchair can safely transfer themselves unaided or with the assistance of a family member, friend, or personal assistant, the Classic Safari Tour remains a viable option.

For guests unable to transition into the Power Wagons, we are able to provide one customized vehicle capable of accommodating most wheelchairs. It requires advanced planning and has some restrictions on seating capacity. Please contact our reservations team at 707-566-3667 to discuss options.

We currently have two fully accessible tents on the property. Both rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and include appropriately equipped showers and bathroom fixtures. These rooms also feature designated parking spaces at the foot of the ramps for easy loading and unloading. They also benefit from close proximity to the restaurant, offices, and gift shop.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at Safari West; however, due to concerns about guest safety as well as the safety of the animal collection, service animals are restricted from all safari tours and anywhere where there isn’t a barrier between the collection and our guests. Service animals are welcome to join you in our overnight accommodations.

Hearing Impaired:

Because of the cost of live, on-demand certified interpreters, Safari West no longer pays for live, on-demand, in-person ASL interpreters.  However, guests with hearing impairments are welcome to bring their own live ASL interpreter and Safari West will waive the admission charge for the guest-provided interpreter.  Similarly, as a further reasonable accommodation, Safari West will provide a complimentary safari tour to a non-professional ASL signer for a hearing-impaired guest, e.g., friends or family members who sign for the guest.

Vision Impaired:

With advance notice, a tactile tour can be provided for a visually impaired guest. A sighted companion will almost always accompany a visually impaired visitor. Should this not be the case, the guest will be accompanied by one of our guest service personnel.

Safari West offers free parking to our guests. Our parking lot has several accessible parking spaces for disabled persons supplying a valid disability-parking placard. Additional reserved parking spaces for placarded vehicles may also be available upon arrival. If you or a member of your party has any special needs, please don’t hesitate to contact us at  707 566-3667

Let us help you plan the safari adventure of a lifetime at Safari West!

Safari Tour

400 Acres of Exploration

From cheetahs to lemurs, giraffes to wildebeest, there’s always something amazing waiting just around the bend. Alongside one of our highly-trained safari guides, head out on a 3-hour excursion to get up close and personal with nearly a thousand animals. With over ninety species making their homes here, Safari West truly is Sonoma county’s very own slice of the Serengeti.

Hit the Road

Climb aboard one of our custom safari vehicles and roll out to explore the Sonoma Serengeti. From the canvas-covered shade of the truck, go in search of the marvelous megafauna of Africa. Your expert guide will track down graceful giraffes, nimble impala, imposing cape buffalo and maybe even a few hulking rhinoceros. You never know what you’re going to find!

Take a Stroll

While the view from the safari truck guarantees a great look at the herds, some animals need a more subtle approach. On the safari walk, saunter through our vast aviary where demoiselle cranes preen along the path and scarlet ibis soar overhead. Come face-to-face with a red-ruffed lemur, search out a cleverly camouflaged cheetah and watch the courtly parade of flamingos around their lagoon home.
