Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Why Your Honda CRV’s Cruise Control Is Not Working and How To Fix It

Is your Honda CRV’s cruise control system not functioning properly lately? When you press the button, the cruise control light won’t turn on or the system fails to maintain the vehicle’s speed. This frustrating issue can happen for several reasons, but the good news is it can also often be fixed with simple troubleshooting and component replacements.

This article explores the common Honda CRV cruise control problems, how to accurately diagnose your particular issue, and the steps needed to get cruise control working again.

Symptoms of Cruise Control Not Working

When the cruise control system fails, you’ll likely notice these key indicators:

  • Pressing the cruise control button does nothing – no light activates and it cannot set or hold vehicle speed
  • The cruise control indicator light does not illuminate when activated
  • Vehicle speed cannot be set or is not maintained by the system
  • Acceleration/deceleration is uncontrolled

If any of those describe what’s happening when you attempt to use cruise control, there’s an underlying issue needing attention.

Common Causes of Cruise Control Failure

There are a few common causes at the root of a malfunctioning Honda CRV cruise control system:

Faulty Cruise Control Switch

The switches and buttons are how you activate and control cruise capabilities. So they commonly wear out over time directly causing problems like:

  • Sticky cruise control button
  • Loose or damaged connectors
  • Switch needs replacement

When switches fail, all communication between your input and the cruise system is lost.

Blown Cruise Control Fuse

Like all electrical components, the Honda CRV cruise control relies on fuses for overload protection. A mere blown fuse can shut the whole system down until that fuse is replaced.

Cruise Control Sensor Issues

The vehicle speed sensor and throttle positioning sensor provide key data like your speed. Issues like:

  • Dirty sensors
  • Faulty sensor unit
  • Sensor wiring damages

Can disrupt the cruise system’s functionality.

Diagnosing the Exact Cruise Control Problem

Before attempting to fix the Honda CRV cruise control failure, you need to accurately diagnose the specific problem. Start the troubleshooting by:

  • Inspecting cruise control switches and fuses for visible damage
  • Retrieving diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to cruise control
  • Taking your vehicle to a professional mechanic for diagnosis

This step is crucial so that time and money aren’t wasted trying to fix the wrong components.

Fixing and Replacing Cruise Components Once the underlying cause is uncovered, repairing cruise control is straightforward:

  • Replace blown fuse
  • Clean dirty sensors
  • Replace the damaged switch unit
  • Replace faulty sensors
  • Have professional install new components

Getting replacement parts installed properly is key to restoring full and reliable functionality.

Preventing Future Cruise Control Problems

With the issue fixed, take proactive steps to maintain the system by:

  • Performing regular inspections for damage
  • Addressing new cruise control problems immediately
  • Keeping connectors, wiring, and sensors clean

Taking care of your Honda CRV’s cruise components can help minimize issues down the road.

Restore Reliable Cruise Capabilities

Malfunctioning cruise control can certainly be frustrating and inconvenient. But in most cases, identifying the specific cause and then replacing faulty components will get it functioning reliably again so you can enjoy precise speed control. This guide highlighted the most common problems and solutions – use it as a reference to troubleshoot your Honda CRV cruise control issues.

Anybody having cruise control issues?

cruise control not working honda city

  • Add to quote

Hey guys, just got my Civic a couple of months ago. It is an LX, so just base model. At any rate, I have been having some issues with the cruise control recently that I wanted to see if anyone else has come across yet. It happened to me today for the second time since I got the car. In both occurrences, I was just cruising at 75 on the freeway with nobody in front of me,. I was driving and for no reason the car cancelled cruise control on its own. No messages popped up except the symbol and "OFF" next to it, and I started slowing down. No different than turning it off manually or just pressing the brake pedal. I was not able to turn it back on again. When I would try to resume or set the speed again, I would get an error sound and the same message "OFF" next to the cruise symbol. Nothing else. It was dark out, and the humidity was high so I thought something might have just gotten on the front camera. I pulled over and found that it was clean, so got back in the car and it worked again, no other issues. That was about a month ago. Today, was again at 75 with no cars in front of me, good and clearly marked road, in broad daylight. Car canceled cruise for no reason again in the same way it did before. Could not re-engage, got same error sound and "OFF" message. This time I knew for sure there was nothing on the camera. I pulled over, put the car in park, then put it back in drive and started driving again. I could set the cruise control again and it worked for the rest of the drive. Another important thing to add is that I had the lane keep assist active on both occasions, and it never stopped working at all, still kept the lane without issue. I took a very short video when it happened again today, see the link: 20211004_130327.mp4 I spoke to someone on the phone from the Honda Customer Care hotline just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. We went through the owner's manual together and agreed that it said nothing about this type of situation, and that it should never just cancel and refuse to re-engage until the vehicle is bought to a complete stop and put in park. He said that I should make an appointment to have it looked at. One thing that I have NOT tried is switching over to normal cruise control mode via holding the interval button when this whole thing is happening. Called local dealer, they want $145 just to look at it. It has 3k miles and it is a leased vehicle, so I'm not really sure why I have to pay. I actually don't know if this is the norm or not as this is the first brand new vehicle that I have leased from any dealership, so on a side note I would like to hear your opinions on that too. Just looking to see if anyone has had a similar issue and could provide some guidance.

Your car should be under full warranty still so they shouldn’t be charging you at all. Dealers are the worst.

That's what I thought. I'm going to call a different dealership tomorrow and if they tell me the same thing I will ask for the service manager. Definitely doesn't seem right.

cruise control not working honda city

Dealer shouldn't be charging you a cent. In fact when you bring the car in the should be providing you with a loaner for the entire duration they have your car. That being said, I use cruise control all the time and I have never experience your issue.

The only two times I have experienced it have been when I've been driving for a long time, as in longer than 30-45 minutes. Probably doesn't matter though.

cruise control not working honda city

Definitely call another Dealership as the $145.00 sounds extremely sketchy to me. Fortunately i have had no issues with my Cruise Control. Definitely sounds like something that should be covered under a warranty, Hope you get it sorted out.

cruise control not working honda city

I have had this happen to me once a couple weekends ago, but I still have not found out what caused it. I was returning home about halfway through a 90 minute interstate drive going about 75 MPH when adaptive cruise suddenly became "unavailable." Lane assist continued to work, so I have no clue what went wrong. I haven't seen it since, but I'm keeping a closer eye on it to say the least.

Finally, I figured I wasn't the only one. UPDATE: I called the same dealership back this morning and spoke to the same service writer. Asked why I would have to pay the fee, was placed on hold for about 30 seconds, and was then told "I've just been informed that you won't need to pay the fee". A little strange, but I do live in a rather rural area so the next closest dealer is about 2 hours away. My appointment is next Wednesday. I know how much fun intermittent problems can be to find, but hopefully they can come up with something. I'll be sure to post back with whatever they find!

cruise control not working honda city

I use cruise all the time, not the acc cruise, just regular. Had this happen on a car years ago, cruise module had to be replaced. But I've had no problems so far with the civic.

Mine canceled by itself today and said it was not available. But I think it was because it was raining super hard. ( I HOPE)

cruise control not working honda city

My Civic has been constantly doing it from time to time. It's very frustrating. Slowing down or pulling off on to the shoulder and putting it in park does not remedy the problem. I haven't tried turning the car off but what I have noticed is that once I get off of the highway and on to another road, I can then turn the cruise control back on.

Hey guys, as promised I visited the dealership today and here's what they claim to be the fix... They recommend removing aftermarket electronics! I have a front and rear facing dashcam in the car and also an IPASS for tolls. They drove the car 14 miles and did not find any fault codes in the cruise control system. They also claim at the time of writing this, that there are no software updates available. I personally believe this to be BS, especially considering this was happening BEFORE I had my camera installed but still had my IPASS. I fully expected to be told that they have no idea what's wrong with it anyway. Service writer also claimed that a friend of his had an IPASS and it supposedly caused interference similar to what I have experienced. He also mentioned that another service writer owns some other Honda that will exhibit problems with the keyless entry system if he has his AirPods in his pocket (his doors won't unlock)... I understand that interference is a real thing, but are our cars actually equipped with state of the art electronics that can be disabled or otherwise rendered useless by a simple toll transponder or a nearby dash cam? If their solution is to remove my dash cam and IPASS, I guess I wouldn't have much use for the vehicle as I wouldn't have any interest in a vehicle that I cannot install a dashcam or IPASS in due to the potential electrical issues that they can cause. I thought about bringing it to a different dealership and removing the electronics temporarily, just to see what reason they will come up with... For now until it happens again I suppose I will just keep the repair order in my files.

This can not be the issue because I have had nothing in my car and it still does this every now and then. This however is why I never have called them, I will never be able to replicate it for them.

Sorry to bump the thread again, but have some more information I wanted to share. Same thing happened to me twice this week, getting more annoying and seems to be more frequent. First time it happened I tried to switch the car to normal cruise mode, still wouldn't turn on. Second time was yesterday and the car was already in normal cruise mode. I also found that I lose my automatic high beam function when this happens, the little light with an A in it goes out. Stop, park, foot off of the pedal, and all resets. I'm thinking of bringing it to a different dealer to get a second opinion, hopefully if it becomes more frequent they'll be able to get it to happen on a test drive.

cruise control not working honda city

I'm glad this post has found others who have had similar experiences! I would rather not remove my dashcam and IPASS before bringing to a different dealer, but if that's what it takes for them to say "we really don't know what it is" then perhaps it would be worth it.

My 2022 sedan EX is two days old with 250 miles on it. Exact same scenerio today on I-70 heading to Moab Utah, as described in original post. Zero added electronics.

cruise control not working honda city

total bs. I have had problem for last 3 months and been blown off by Honda. Keep complaining to Honda Corp.. The dealers do not have a clue what to do. It is a manufacturing flaw.

Same thing on ours, randomly shuts off and will not turn on until you shut off car. 2022 Civic Touring.

cruise control not working honda city

How often has it been happened to your Civic @phishstik ?

Got a good laugh out of the dealer's response to the review I left the other day... "We are sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied with your visit. I looked into the file and saw that the reason for your cruise control problem was most likely caused by the placement of your dashcam and IPASS near the cruise control. Some electronics can cause interference in others. Again, we apologize for the confusion, and are always here if you have any questions."

cruise control not working honda city

For more humor, ask them where the cruse control is so you can move your electronics.

cruise control not working honda city

Mine happened with ACC. Haven't had opportunity to drive/cruise without the ACC. Called dealer and talked with service manager. He basically said to expect it to happen under certain conditions with the ACC. He also says just stop and shut it off and it will reset. So this sounds kind funky if you ask me. Going down I-70 and need to stop here and there to reset ACC? Really?

Try it without ACC, let it happened again then inform the service manager and wait for his new answer. I'm afraid this is going to be a long grind with Honda to resolve this.

22CIVICHPD said: Yes this is a problem. Almost ready for my 15,000 service next weekend. Has happened several times (probably 10 at least) with and without lane assist, traffic, or humid windows. I think the camera system is just shit. I have said nothing to the dealer as of yet. It is very random and annoying as well. I have even had to turn the car off to get it to let me set it again. You may be right however and all I needed to do was put in in park and try again. At that point I may as well cycle the ignition and reset everything was my thought process. I have had the car brake for no reason at all also, and when on a two-lane highway in the dark with on-coming headlights. I understand these systems are far from perfect but I would worry about an inexperienced driver. The lane keep assist will try to run you into walls and all kinds of things also Other than this I have few complaints about this car. Click to expand...

Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the dealer and whatever they say is what we get.

I disagree. If the dealer is unhelpful some social media posts on several channels of the video will get Honda's attention.

There are too many of us describing this exact issue for it to NOT be a Honda issue. Honda corporate needs to send out a bulletin to ALL Honda dealership service departments to NOT charge any 2022 owner that brings their car in that “customer states cruise control randomly shuts off and can not be reset or reengaged”. Come on Honda…. You can do better

Only 250 miles on my 22 civic hatchback and I've not experienced this issue yet.

cruise control not working honda city

Just happened to me at 2000+ miles. I am wondering if this has something to do with drivers attention. If the system sensing you aren’t interacting enough maybe it will shut it off?

cruise control not working honda city

Yeah this happened to me for the first time today when I was on a little 2 hour drive in my 2022 Honda Civic touring. Then happened 3 more times randomly on the drive there and back. Not sure what’s going on. I’ve already driven the car a combined 40+ hours in just road trips in the last couple weeks and it’s never happened before.

cruise control not working honda city

My 2022 ex touring has 4K and it is doing the same exact thing with the cruise control on longer drives. It turns off then when you try and turn it back on it beeps and will not allow you to do so.

I've had similar issues with my EX... 3 separate times now it just turns off and will not re-engage. The only way to reset it is to stop the car, turn it off, then back on again.

Cruise control comes on when pressed but does not stay on

  • Add to quote

First off, I have a 2007 automatic honda civic, with right at 75,000 miles on it. A few months ago my cruise control stopped working. Here is what it does- if you are driving and you push in the cruise control button to turn on the cruise, the green cruise light will turn on then turn off as soon as you release the button. I tried messing around and trying different things and I found that if I hold the cruise control button the light will remain on, and if (while stilling holding the button) I hit the "set" button the cruise control will engage and stay on as long as I hold down the cruise button- as soon as I release the button the light goes off and the cruise no longer works. I checked all the inside fuses and none look to be blown. Any suggestions? Could it be something with the brakes/pedal that are cutting off the cruise?

cruise control not working honda city

Are you travelling over 20mph at the time? I know it won't work unless you're going at least 20mph.

cruise control not working honda city

Does the main button stay down when you press it? It should "click" down when turning it on and then come back up flush when turning off. Is it staying down? May be the switch if not.

cruise control not working honda city

Its gotta be the switch. It is recieving the signal to activate cruise, but not holding it. The computer thinks that you have turned off cruise intentionally.

Thanks for the suggestions so far... Fijiblue, yeah I am going over 20 mph, I've been testing it on the interstate. tpattgeek, the button doesn't seem to be sticking. It comes right back up and becomes flush with the other parts. So your saying it should be staying down? Any thoughts on how I can fix this or is this a "take it in" type of job?

take it in if youre under warranty, otherwise its not a hard swap to replace the buttons, just possibly pricy

cruise control not working honda city

The left button Cruise (main) should latch in the down position when pressed, sounds like you found it.

I had to replace my switch as well, you have to buy the whole harness which sucks. Apparently a few people on here have had problems with the switch going out. I took mine apart and the mechanism that holds the switch down seems very flimsy, i'm surprised this doesn't happen more often

Alrighty, sounds like I need to run up to the honda dealership and check some prices to see if its worth my time trying to learn how to take it apart or just have them take care of it. I'll check online but I imagine its too new of a car to fine step by step instructions on this particular issue. Thanks for all the info!

There is a DIY for installing the steering wheel audio controls of an EX on LX trim cars, the procedure for swapping them is pretty much the same minus the custom wiring.

Mine has done the same thing. 07 2dr coupe with less than 50k miles. Sounds like planned obsolesence; dealer wants $140 to replace.

This WILL sound crazy but 2 Si's have already done this for me bc it did it on mine on my Florida trip. When it does it next time, try and hit the SET button (DECEL) to set your speed, IF it doesnt reactivate. Take your clutch pedal and hit it with the side of your foot try to reactivate it again DURING THIS PROCESS DO NOT TURN THE CRUISE MODULE OFF (one cruise light in the dash should be illuminated) intermittently I had to give her a decent hit. I dont know whether this will fix YOUR concern, but I replaced the clutch switch (similar to the brake switch). Tells the car that the cluch is engaged so it will start or deactivate cruise, depending what your doing... Let me know if this helps...

I superglued the button in a few years ago. Problem solved.

Great fix !!

My fix was to fold a small piece of thick paper (believe I used a business card) and wedge it into the side of the button so that it turns on and holds in the ON position.

That's what I did a few years back.... Now thinking of the superglue trick or bite the bullet and replace the switch.

I gave a 2010 civic and an having the same problem. But I'll almost positive mine never clicked in when working. Are you sure it should click in.

Dig you ever figure it out? Have the exact same problem

Some switches fail to latch when pressed in. Proper fix is new switch.... some have found work around to keep it pressed in.

I believe it is the actual switch itself that fails to stay engaged, if you have read the previous post the folded piece of paper, or the Glue post!! Will work, personally I just get a quarter out of my coin tray/collection and insert it into the gap on the left side of the button to keep it engaged, Clean, Fast, Easy & Cheap!! Kinda my MANTRA...

Cruise Control stopped working

  • Add to quote

Took my usual weekly trip to the mountains today to visit the folks. Cruise worked just fine on the way up (40 miles each way). On the way home, when I hit the set button, I got a beep and a "warning light" on the dash stating "ACC OFF" (or something close to that). I tried it a few times but got the same issue each time. The folks live down a mile dirt/gravel/dust lane so I figured maybe the radar sensor on the car got covered w/dirt/dust but this is the 1st time it's happened. When I got home, I looked on the front of the car for the ACC radar sensor but couldn't find it (I was going to clean it). Last weekend, I installed an aftermarket stand alone remote start but I don't know why that would affect the adaptive cruise control now and not earlier (I've made 2 trips since installation). Could be something unrelated but I'd rather not have to drive an hour to the dealer on a Saturday for them to figure it out if it's something simple. If I (meaning you guys) can't figure it out by tomorrow AM, I guess I'll have to rip apart the dash again and remove the remote start. Not sure what else there is. 2021 EX

Did you accidently turn the cruise control off?

No, sir. Steady speed of about 65mph, foot off the brake, ACC/LKAS shows on (on the dash). I tried turning the MAIN button on/off a few times but it didn't help.

If there is something wrong with the radar. There will be a warning message.

Quick update. I couldn't find the radar emitter (whatever it's called) but I wiped down the windscreen, especially in front of the Honda Sensing camera. Took it out for a drive and the cruise seems to be working now (at least up to about 45mph). Not sure if there was just a little too much dust over the camera or if it something else. I'll report back if it acts up again.

In order for ACC to work both radar and camera need to be operational. No warning message? On my Mazda, if either is blocked. I get a warning message in plain English on which sensor is not working.

cruise control not working honda city

The radar sensing unit is likely in that box behind your mirror, if it is anything like my wife's setup on her Rav4. Cleaning the windshield removed the dust from in front of what was obscuring it, is my guess. A quick test would be to cover that area with a post-it note to see if you get the same error.

Good thinking, Dammit. I just think it was odd that this is the 1st time this has happened but I'm on the same dusty road every week and it's never happened before. If the issue doesn't return (before I get back on that dusty road), I'll probably start carrying some masking tape with me and cover that area w/it before I get on that road. PITA but better than the alternative, I guess. Or I'll just stop once I get back on the pavement and wipe it all down. No warning message, Ein. Wish I had gotten one so I would have been able to figure it out.

Clutch master cylinder? I'd guess it to be the cruise control switch by the clutch pedal needing adjusting.

Cheers, will have a gander at dinner, so could this have occurred due to having my clutch master cylinder replaced

I'm not entirely sure what's involved when changing the clutch master cylinder, but I suspect they've probably removed the switch to improve access, and just not set it back up properly. I removed mine when trying to adjust clutch separation distance at the cylinder, as it made the job a little easier.

cruise control not working honda city

When you say you couldn't get it working could you not even turn it on so that the cruise control light appears? If that's the case I would say it's more to do with a fuse gone. If your light does come on then as above it's most likely the switch on the pedal (had similar issues with mine in the past).

Looking at this diagram for my model the cruise control switch is on the brake (#4) Honda Car Parts / Choose by Model / Genuine Honda Parts | Honda Cars | Honda Motorcycles | Honda Power Products | Lings Honda

Pressing either the clutch pedal or brake pedal will turn off your cruise control, so there is a switch for each. I'd expect your brake lights to be on permanently on if it was the brake pedal switch, assuming it's that which triggers them. If the plunger is definitely being pushed fully back into its housing (ensure the pedal is stopping against the switch housing/stop face, and not the bracket the switch is mounted to), then just double check it's connected up correctly. It may of even been damaged, but my money is on it being poorly positioned. Where are you in the UK?

Leicestershire, when you say connected should it have a wire coming off the top part as mine is just like the picure

That's a little far away from me unfortunately, although if there is nothing connected to the switch at the top, then it doesn't matter where you are as that will likely be your problem

Really, I put my hand up there and on top of this switch I felt like a plastic connector, so your saying that part should have something plugged into it, But wouldn't I be getting a warning light

Yes, on top of the switch there should be something plugged in. You won't necessarily get a warning light, no. Find where the other end of the connector is, plug it in and test the cruise control. Sounds like the Honda mechanic has forgotten to plug it back in.

cruise control not working honda city

Should definitely be plugged in as above.

Yep your right just looked at my mates and his has a small grey plug going in, thing is I cant see mine so looks like popping my trim off

I can't see it being far at all! Open the drivers door and remove the small(ish) triangular piece of trim on the side of the dash that can't be seen when the door is shut. This pops off and you'll find a small screw behind it. Remove the screw, then the main body of trim that sits above the footwell can be pulled off. Easy enough! The plug connector will probably be in plain sight then.

Cheers for that, i just find it odd that there's nothing dangling about, i'll see what they say tomorrow but will probably deny all knowledge

It is odd. Maybe when finishing up they have accidentally tucked it away with the other wires or something and not realised. I'm sure it'll be up there somewhere

Booked in Friday, he said it should have a connector going in and it would be checked as warranty work as they did the master cylinder, he said hopefully it's a straightforward fix. Hopefully it was them as I don't want another bill this mth

Result mate! Just a simple mistake, it happens, but a shame it did.

Cruise Control Suddenly Stops Working

  • Add to quote

Riding down interstate with my cruise on at 70 mph, cruise stops working car shakes a lil and dies will not crank? It has actually done this before I tap brakes cruise goes off all is well?

cruise control not working honda city

So you said it done that before, what did you do to get it to work again?

I tapped brakes killed the cruise and accelerated it never checked up. I did same thing here except when I tapped brakes to kill cruise it died and hadn’t cracked since. I stopped by advance auto to plug in there diagnostic it wouldn’t connect

cruise control not working honda city

The 2002 - 2004 Vs had throttle cables, the 2005 - 2006 had throttle by wire. Makes a difference in CC control. They ALL have a 'disengage' function on the brake light switch, is that working OK? Or could it be marginal, so that the brake lights come on just when a vibration occurs? (Manual trans cars have a switch on the clutch pedal, too) Check out the Service Manual pinned to the top of the Gen2 forum. Might give you more ideas for troubleshooting.

Not sure there? But why did it die and not crank back up

So, the actual issue is the engine shutting down (NOT cruise control disengaging)? That could be a crank or cam sensor, or a stretched timing chain (if the car were run low on oil).

I think the cruise issue is secondary but you might be onto something with sensors? Should I take to a reputable mech to get diagnosed?

Thread title edited.

cruise control not working honda city

Don't know for sure. Tapping the brakes and or turning off the cruise returned normal function? As to why the engine stalled?, need more tests. The code reader not functioning is a possible clue. Check to see if pin 16 on the data link connector is 12 volts. If you have an oscilloscope to check data lines?? Look for the 5 volt reference. If shorted or missing then it will prevent the engine from starting (but not cranking) In the dash behind the cruise control main switch, there is the cruise control unit. On the connector, pin 4 should have power. Pin 14 is ground thru the transmission range switch Pin 3 is main ground for cruise control unit. Pins 1, 11, 9 go to cruise control actuator pins 2, 3, 4 respectively. Pin 1 on the actuator is ground. Would check wiring continuity and see if there is open Or check to see if the wiring is shorted (to power or ground). Easiest thing to do is to see if a qualified mechanic can diagnosis this issue. Please keep us inform on how it goes. Thanks

Why Is the Cruise Control Not Working After a Battery Change? 5 Tips to Fix the Issue

Cruising along the open road, the convenience of cruise control can make driving a Chrysler a pleasurable experience. However, an unexpected hiccup can arise when replacing the battery, leaving the cruise control system unresponsive.

Electrical hiccups and battery reset, brake switch malfunction, stalk, and signal transmission, lost memories and re-calibration, and deeper electrical gremlins are the most common reasons behind the cruise control not working after a battery change.

Cruise Control Not Working After Battery Change

In this article, let’s unravel the mystery behind why cruise control may cease to function after a battery change in a Chrysler vehicle. I’ll explore the possible causes and practical solutions to get your cruise control back on the road.

What Causes the Cruise Control Not Working After a Battery Change? How Do You Fix It?

1. electrical hiccup and battery reset.

Let’s begin by understanding the common culprit – an electrical hiccup that disrupts the cruise control system during a battery replacement. Fear not! You can often address this issue by taking charge with a battery reset.

Turn off the ignition, patiently wait for at least 30 seconds, reconnect the battery, and allow your vehicle to undergo a full reboot. This process acts as a gentle wake-up call for the cruise control, resolving the temporary disturbance.

2. Brake Switch Malfunction

If your cruise control stubbornly refuses to engage, it could be due to a malfunctioning brake switch. A bright and responsive display indicates a well-functioning brake switch.

Conduct a straightforward check by inspecting your brake lights. If issues persist, investigate the brake switch for potential malfunctions or consider replacing it.

3. Stalk and Signal Transmission

Imagine your cruise control stalk as a Morse code transmitter on your steering wheel, sending signals to activate and adjust the system.

If the buttons on the stalk are uncooperative – stuck, depressed, or not making proper contact – your cruise control won’t receive the necessary commands.

To fix it, firmly press and release the cruise control stalk buttons to ensure proper contact. If problems persist, inspect the stalk for any physical issues and consider repair or replacement for optimal functionality.

4. Lost Memories and Re-calibration

A battery change can induce temporary amnesia in the cruise control, causing it to forget its pre-programmed settings. There is no need to panic – what you need is a re-calibration process.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Insert the ignition key, and turn it to “ON,” but don’t start your Chrysler.
  • Identify the cruise control interface, either on the steering wheel or dashboard.
  • Check your Chrysler manual for the precise button combo to recalibrate; usually involves holding “Set” and “Resume” simultaneously for a few seconds and releasing them.
  • You will see a message on your instrument cluster or a blinking light associated with the cruise control system on a successful recalibration.
  • Finally, start the engine and test the cruise control. Ensure it engages, accelerates, and decelerates as intended.

5. Deeper Electrical Gremlins

In rare cases, persistent cruise control issues may indicate deeper electrical gremlins within the car’s system or specific components.

In that case, seek assistance from a certified mechanic or your dealership for a thorough electrical diagnosis. They’ll delve into the system, identify lurking problems, and get your cruise control back on track.

Can a Bad Battery Cause Cruise Control to Malfunction?

A faulty battery can indeed impact cruise control operation.

The system depends on a steady power supply, and if the battery fails, it results in voltage fluctuations, directly affecting cruise control functionality.

When the battery voltage is insufficient, the vehicle’s computer may deactivate non-essential functions, including cruise control, for safety reasons.

How Do I Determine if My Cruise Control Fuse Is Blown?

A blown fuse halts cruise control. To confirm a blown cruise control fuse in your Chrysler, locate the fuse boxes in the passenger compartment and under the hood. Identify the fuse labeled “Cruise Control” or “CC.”

If not explicitly labeled, consult the manual for the correct fuse number or amperage.

Visually inspect for a broken filament in the transparent casing or use a multimeter for resistance measurement . If blown, replace it with a matching fuse (usually 5 or 10 amps) using a fuse puller tool.

Final Thoughts

In the intricate world of automotive electronics, a seemingly simple task like changing a battery can temporarily disrupt the functionality of cruise control. I’ve covered a spectrum of potential issues, from addressing electrical hiccups to checking the brake switch and ensuring proper signal transmission.

Should these DIY solutions prove ineffective, don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance. Deeper electrical gremlins might be at play, necessitating the expertise of a qualified mechanic or dealership.
