10 Sneaky Travel Scams That Too Many People Fall For

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

Travel scams seem to be increasingly common amid the rise of technological advancements like AI.

There’s nothing like a scam to put a damper on your hard-earned vacation. In this day and age, the opportunities for people to swindle you out of cash or steal your data seem to be endless.

“Travel scams have been around for decades. However, it’s safe to assume that there has been an increase in recent years as technology continues to advance,” Julian Moro , senior vice president and regional security director at International SOS, told HuffPost.

“Because of such technological advances, travelers are easier targets from the booking and planning process, all the way through the end of a trip. While travel scams have increased, the frequency and sophistication of cyber scams has also increased, as has broader awareness and healthy skepticism.”

Indeed, Booking.com’s safety expert reported in June there had been “anywhere from a 500 to a 900% increase” in travel scams over the past 18 months, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence.

“With AI, cybercriminals can scale very easily and at low costs,” said Ally Armeson , executive director of programs at the Cybercrime Support Network. “What used to take them hours now takes seconds, which allows these criminal networks to produce a greater number of less detectable scams.”

Your likelihood of encountering a scam and the nature of the fraud can depend on where you travel as well.

“Scams vary by country, so popular scams in one region might be different from another,” noted travel writer Matthew Kepnes , aka Nomadic Matt. “Fortunately, most scams won’t put you in harm’s way, rather, they’ll just cost you a few bucks and some embarrassment. That said, there are lots of scams out there that can break the bank and lead to you losing your wallet, phone, or other valuables.”

To help vacationers avoid these scenarios, we asked experts to outline some of the most common travel scams and what to look out for.

Fake Travel Document Websites

“One that we saw after the pandemic and certainly still hear about today are the fake travel documents websites,” said Amy Nofziger , the director of victim support at the AARP Fraud Watch Network.

Since many people didn’t travel for a year or two, they let their passports and TSA pre-check status expire. Once bans were lifted and vaccines became readily available, there was a surge in travelers seeking to travel abroad again — and thus needing up-to-date passports and more.

“Many people went online and found look-alike websites that claim to help you renew or enroll in the TSA PreCheck or the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry program that speed you through airport security for a fee,” Nofziger explained. “But these sites are actually trying to con you out of money and personal information.”

Verify that you’re only using legitimate services if you want external assistance with your travel documents, and otherwise try to go directly to the official government source for your needs.

Taxi Overcharge

“Be aware of a common and longstanding scam ― the taxi overcharge ― where the driver claims the meter is broken and tries to set a flat rate that is well over the typical rate,” Moro warned.

Don’t continue with your ride if a taxi driver says the meter is broken but not to worry because they’ll keep the price low.

“When you get where you’re going, the charge is high and you’re stuck because you’re afraid to get out and not pay, especially when the cabbie says they’ll call the cops,” explained Ned S. Levi , a columnist and travel scam expert with Travelers United.

If you’ve arranged for a driver to pick you up at the airport, make sure you have a way to verify it’s the correct driver to avoid scammers.

Unsecured Wi-Fi And Hotspots

“Think about how much we rely on technology when we travel,” Armeson said. “Although it wasn’t a cyber attack, look at the impact the Crowdstrike software outage had on the entire airline industry this summer. On a more personal level, we all use technology to access our boarding pass, navigate new places, manage our trip budget and stay connected.”

Cybercriminals often take advantage of these opportunities to access sensitive information and data.

“For instance, hackers set up fake Wi-Fi networks in areas with free Wi-Fi, like airports or hotels,” Armeson explained. “When you try to connect, you see two networks with similar names and, without verifying which is correct, you might connect to the hacker’s network. Now that hacker can access your device and infect it with malware or intercept your data.”

Make an effort to avoid unsecured Wi-Fi networks. The same goes for hotspots.

“Be wary of any hotspot requesting credit card information and ensure you connect only to reputable networks,” Moro urged. “Scammers may set up fake hotspots and use them to hack into your phone to track passwords, identity information, and bank information.”

He also warned about “shoulder surfing” on your travels ― when scammers look over people’s shoulders (sometimes from a distance with binoculars or other aids) as they enter their usernames and passwords in a hotel lobby, airport or coffee shop. Use your hand to cover keypads, consider a screen protector and take advantage of two-factor authentication to avoid this situation.

Bookings for rental cars, accommodations and even flights can lead unsuspecting travelers into scams.

Car Rental Scam

“We all want a good deal and try to do online searches for the best price of a rental car, and scammers know this,” Nofziger said. “They will set up phony customer service numbers online that look just like those of major rental-car companies indicating to ‘call for the best deal.’”

When you call, you’ll likely receive an offer for a huge discount but only if you pay ahead of time, and they’ll request payment in the form of prepaid gift card.

“This is so hard for travelers because oftentimes they only realize they have been a victim when they show up at their destination and there is no rental car for them,” Nofziger said. “Always verify that you’re calling the real customer service department, or that you’re on a legitimate rental-car-company website.”

Another car rental scam involves fake claims of damage. Be sure to take photos of your vehicle upon return.

“When you bring the car back, the rental company claims a week or more later that there was damage to the car such as a dent, a burn in the upholstery or smoking smell, and charges you to take care of the problem,” Levi said. “This happens sometimes with well-known rental companies.”

Emergency Calls

“Another scam involves robocallers who target travelers’ families, claiming an emergency and urging them to send money immediately,” Moro said. “This scam is especially effective against older travelers.”

To counter this scheme, he recommended talking to your family before you leave home and setting up a special code word that you would use only in cases of genuine emergencies.

“This can help family members distinguish between real emergencies and scams,” Moro noted.

‘Closed’ Tourist Attractions

“People may tell you an attraction is closed but they know a ‘better’ spot ― then proceed to drive you around to various shops that will pressure you into buying something,” Kepnes said.

Scammers might insist the site is closed for lunch or a local holiday, but be sure to verify this is the case.

When you arrive at a tourist attraction that appears to be closed, walk around to all entrances or sides of the building. Check the hours on the official website and social media pages.

If you arrive at an attraction without a ticket, avoid purchasing a counterfeit one outside.

“With so many tickets being printed online these days or in emails sent to smartphones, scammers create their own tickets and claim that their friend can’t go and they are selling their ticket outside the venue ― but the ticket is fake, of course,” Levi said.

Fake Customer Service

“Scammers use AI to mimic real customer service representatives through voice, video, or chat, leading to fraudulent transactions,” said Brittany Allen , a trust and safety architect at Sift. “It can even look like a legitimate phone number ― fraudsters have no problem spoofing a company’s name on caller ID.”

Stressed-out travelers dealing with cancelations and other disruptions are prime targets for this kind of scam.

“Cybercriminals are scouring social media looking for frustrated travelers,” Armeson explained. “Let’s say your flight is canceled, and you post your disappointment about it on social media, tagging the airline.”

She noted that scammers seek out these types of posts and are ready to pounce with fake airline profiles to help you “fix the issue.”

“In reality, they aren’t fixing anything at all,” Armeson added. “They are attempting to steal your credit card number or login credentials disguised as someone who can help you with a refund or rebooking.”

Strangers On The Street

Of course, travel is an opportunity to meet new people and explore the local culture, but you can still be friendly and have a nice time while keeping your guard up.

“Travelers are at risk for petty crime like pickpocketing,” Moro noted. “Always be cautious when accepting offers from unofficial tour services, as they may not be legitimate, and always stay alert to potential distractions that could be used to facilitate theft. An example of this is a stranger approaching you to ask for money or to engage in a friendly conversation. This can be used as a distraction while an accomplice pickpockets you. It’s important to always be alert and hyper-aware of your surroundings.”

He urged travelers to keep their belongings secure and never travel with more cash, cards, and documents than they need.

“People may ‘accidentally’ spill something on you and then apologize profusely while their accomplice picks your pocket,” Kepnes warned. “Or friendly locals ask you to sign a petition for a ‘worthy’ cause only to then extort you for money after you’ve signed.”

Don’t let a good street performance distract you from holding on to your belongings. And look out for what Levi calls “the ersatz cop scam.”

“A fake cop comes to a traveler on the street and asks to examine their wallet for counterfeit bills and steals their cash,” he explained. “Yes, people fall for it, particularly older travelers.”

“I advise travelers to exercise caution when using ATMs or card readers at restaurants, bars and other establishments while traveling,” Moro said. “These devices can capture card numbers and PINs, which scammers can then use to clone cards.”

He recommended withdrawing cash ahead of your trip and storing it securely. Whenever possible, be sure to use the “tap” option at checkout, rather than inserting your credit or debit card.

Fraudulent Booking Websites

“Cybercriminals can easily set up fake booking websites that look just like real ones, and use enticing travel deals to convince people to enter their credit card details,” Armeson noted.

Travelers use these to book nonexistent tickets, flights, accommodations and more before embarking on their journey, only to later discover the fraud.

“With the rise in popularity of rental properties, there has been an increase in fake listings as well as false information on listings,” Moro said. “Always use well-known, reputable booking platforms and avoid using third-party websites. When booking hotels, make sure that you are using their approved websites or a reputable booking site. Always make sure that any travel agencies are verified and have credible reviews, should you plan to use one.”

Many fraudsters use payment methods that are difficult to dispute, like wire transfers.

“Even more sophisticated fraudsters can use these fake travel websites as middlemen to collect victims’ personal and financial data while actually booking the requested flights or accommodations elsewhere, which means it may take even longer for victims to realize their data is compromised,” Allen noted. “The availability of generative AI has made these websites even more convincing.”

Travelers might also receive phishing emails that appear to be from legitimate travel companies and wind up giving sensitive information to scammers.

“Similarly to the fake booking sites, the more sophisticated fraudsters sometimes use these emails to pass the victim along to the legitimate company’s site to obfuscate their fraudulent activity,” Allen said. “And AI has made these emails even harder to spot.”

There are resources to assist travelers who have been scammed.

What To Do If You Suspect You’ve Been Scammed

If you suspect you’ve fallen for a scam, remember there are steps you can take to protect your data and money and recover lost funds.

“First, cut off all communication with the scammer and do not provide them with any more information,” Allen advised. “If you are communicating with them on a social media platform or messaging app, report the associated accounts. Alert your financial institutions and other relevant authorities, including your local police department.”

In addition to contacting your bank, she recommended reviewing and monitoring your bank accounts, credit card or other financial statements, credit reports, and any notifications you receive from banks, credit card companies, or government agencies. If you have a travel insurance policy, reach out to the provider to find out about next steps.

“It’s generally a good idea to freeze your credit with the three big reporting agencies ― Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax ― and even more so if you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam,” Allen added. “Look out for any new charges you did not make, or new opened accounts.”

Change your passwords for travel and financial accounts and enable two-factor authentication to avoid a takeover. Consider using a password manager. In situations where your devices were compromised, run a scan for malware and back up any important data. A factory reset can help as well.

“If you’re just out a few dollars, consider that the cost of the lesson learned,” Kepnes said. “I’ve been scammed more times than I can count over the years, but at the end of the day, losing a few bucks here and there won’t break the bank. Just make sure you pay more attention next time!”

Pleasantly surprised by the tour I just came back from (YS8). Our tour guide was Roy Zhou, who was really a fantastic individual! He was funny, considerate, flexible, and most of all was really organized in leading our group of 49 ppl, most of which were Chinese-speaking. I was born in the US, and although I can understand Chinese, I still requested that he translate certain things into English, which he did a really great job of! The food options were mostly catered towards Chinese individuals, where we stopped at Chinese buffets for lunch (ranging from $14-$16 a person, which includes drinks and tip). However, near every buffet was a non-Chinese food place in the same plaza, which I opted for! Roy did a wonderful job explaining the different places. He didn't push expensive products or expensive tours, and really told it like it is! There is a $10 service fee per day per person, which was stated well-before hand, and I felt was reasonable given the wonderful experience with the tour guide. Our driver was also a really nice gentleman who was funny and engaging. He was really safe and got us to our destinations in a timely manner. The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 stars is Bc the first day the pickup from the airport was rather confusing. They were almost an hour late, which I can forgive since there was an accident/lots of traffic on the LA highway. What really made me upset was that they told us the shuttle to the hotel was free, but they then said that there was a $10 fee per person. I told the lady that this was not what was stated in our email. But then, she circled it on the sheet of paper she had. So, definitely a little upset that we weren't told upfront. The $10 per person is fine, but I just wish I was notified ahead of time. I would have tipped a good amount, but this left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, I really enjoyed my time. Minus the first day airport pickup snafu (which made me super nervous about what to expect), this was a really fun experience!

My husband and i joined Yellowstone tour from 8/6 - 8/10. The first day we landed on Salt Lake City Airport and checked into hotel room. The next morning the tour guide collected 4 days tips and additional fee advance when the bus start running. (I thought the tips should collects at the end of each day after the service) He wasn't smiling through the whole trip. The bus was so old with broken a/c. We were sweating through the long rides. We got dropped off to the hotel at the 4th day and took the flight back home at the 5th day It was one whole day in park plus couple hours in somewhere each of 2nd and 3rd day. We paid $1796 tour fee, $240 additional fee and $96 tips plus airfare today $2692 for 2. That was not worthy. We stayed in 1 star motel at the first night in Yellowstone. i am not recommended.

Booked 4 days tour to lower Antelope Canyon via Goldenbus tour website and it's service by CTour Holiday. Anthony Wen is an experience tour guide. He is timely, organized , knowledgeable and confident leader. He's attentive and respectful to everyone. He makes sure everyone is as safe and comfortable as possible .

Very rude drivers, they will attempt to hit your car with their bus. They will park wherever they can, even if there are signs forbidding the parking of busses in the lot. The passengers will stand in the middle of intersections after they exit the bus. This company needs to be taken off the road immediately, they are a danger to the public at large.

These jerks love to park their busses wherever they please.

Who needs parking spaces or lanes in a parking lot? Don't worry about going into the place that owns the lot, go to Ranch 99!

Hello Tom, we apologize if our drivers behaved improperly. We have been coming to this plaza for the past 10 years, and we are sure that there is NO restrictions on bus parking. In fact, very restaurant, shop, and the supermarket benefit from our groups.

If I could give negative stars I would. This experience is absolutely horrendous, stay far away. You don't want to be stuck with a rude, unorganized tour guide that ignores you and screams at you half the time. Especially the guy named Zi, English name Rain. Yelp is saying I went over the text limit so here's screenshots detailing my experience. But basically: 1. You're not allowed to ask questions without attitude 2. Be confused about the itinerary, and not receive information and canyon rules until 2 hours into the 5 hours drive there. Such as a tip to have pockets to hold your phone because you're not allowed bags or to take pictures on the staircases. 3. Tipping is "required" before the tour starts and this guy probably won't even be your official tour guide. 4. He will scream at you for trying to get his attention when you just want to be treated fairly. You get to the counter first to get seating assigned earlier, but he will not tell you to line up until after he's already assigned people who get there later than you. Get into a screaming match and enter hotel security. 5. They tell you there will be pickup after a Vegas show, but don't show up and tell you to take a taxi back when you call the company because it's useless calling a guide that doesn't pick up. 6. Bad food that isn't worth it. Better off going around the area. 7. This guy have no problems yelling at customers, probably will yell at little girls too.

Booked a 7-day LV trip with CTour Holiday for my parents who don't speak English. The trip starts on 1/25/2020. However, the outburst of Wuhan coronavirus (2019-nCoV) killed 82 people, infected nearly a thousand, and potentially infected several thousands in China by the time the trip started. Because the tourists of CTour Holiday mostly come from China, it is possible that some are potential carriers. On 1/24, China banned all touring groups in the mainland to prevent spreading the deadly virus, but CTour Holiday continue their services, organizing trips for Chinese tourists, mostly in population dense areas in the US. I called the office, tried to cancel or reschedule the trip. The answer was no cancellation = 0% refund. I would agree if this was the good old days. But now the coronavirus is widely spreading and sickening people. The only two conditions that CTour Holiday agrees on a refund are either you directly come from Wuhan, or you are a doctor who needs to treat patients in China. As a matter of fact, it could take 1-14 days for an infected person to develop any symptoms. Tourists on the bus could be potential carriers. The warm, cozy bus can be a natural incubator for virus propagation. Expressing my concerns to their office results in cold responses like 'You could wear a mask', 'you are overreacting'. First, masks are out of stock from Amazon or local CVS stores in SF. Second, it is really not overreacting as you can read here for the recent updates https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/27/world/asia/china-coronavirus.html In the end, I got 0% refund. I believe there are other travelers who are facing the same problem. Money is one thing, but raising public health concerns is another. Hope I knew other ways to file complaints.

Hi Hailing, cancelling the tour 1 day before departure is a challenge for us, there is no way we can get refund from hotels either, neither do we have enough time to resell the seats. Also, our business model is B to B, meaning we cannot change an existing order with customers directly, everything has to be done through travel agents.

We took a tour to Yellowstone National Park, Mr. Rushmore, Grand Teton, Devil's Tower and many more places. Both Rebecca and Li are nice and professional. Li either knows the places very well or has a terrific GPA. Whenever there is traffic, he finds another route. Rebecca is extremely diligent and meticulous. No corners were cut, no promises were broken, and she was polite and helpful 24/7. The tour in general was exhausting, but all these places are worth seeing. I wish CTour Holiday the greatest success. Svetlana, NY

Just got back from a 7 days tour code 773-402 departed in Rowland Heights that would've included Bruce Canyon which is the big reason we took this tour code, however, on day one we ask the tour guide when is our scheduled stop to Bryce Canyon and we were told we are not going there but according to the tour we purchased it was included. This is a case where we paid something but didn't get. Repeated calls to the agency Take Tours were unsuccessful. We have taken several tours before in Europe and Canada and when we get to a pick up point, load up and the tour bus start from point A to all stop with all passengers until the end of tour. Not this one, the bus stop to other place pick up or other tourist and drop off others. The tour guide is mediocre at best. He doesn't speak English good enough to understand his narration of places of interests and for us English speakers we're left wondering what's he's saying! Most of the tourists in the bus seems like from Asia because when the tour guide shift this narration in Chinese or I think mandarin the folks sometimes laugh! This company looks like it's geared onto Asian tourists, mainly Chinese tourist and for anyone to purchase a US tour find out from the agency first what company provide the tour service and if they say C Tour holiday, wall away fast. The hotels this CTour holiday chose are not what I expected here in the US, more like in a third world places; not enough hot water to shower, no elevator fo at least people with disabilities and not enough room on the first floor and only 2 of the hotels have breakfast, the other nothing to buy something for breakfast for 6 or 7 am departure times then eat lunch late. Lunch time is another issue where the bus stop in a small eater with 3 other tourist buses stop at the same time with half an hour to eat then the eatery runs out of food. This company have their own schedule of stop and don't follow what the agency where tour was bought. One other thing worth mentioning are the attitudes of most passengers where they don't seem to care about picking up their own trash. Trash all over at the end of the day! Unsat! Bottom line, when buying a tour before you do it ask the tour agents what company service their tour and if they mention C Tour Holiday, run away ask for other company then call that company and ask their schedule to make sure they go to places where the tour you plan on buying is where they go. This tour I took was very disappointing to sat the least. If there's below one star rating it's what they get from me.

We had a great experience on our 7 days trip YG 7 tour. Our tour guide Charlie Zhao is an excellent guide. Our driver also excellent driver. We all have a great time with them and a lot of memories om this tour trip from July 23-29. Thank you so much to Charlie(our tour guide) and the driver who take care of all of us on the tour bus.

We had a very frustrating experience with the service of CTOUR HOLIDAY for our San Francisco Tour from Costa Mesa, that we don't wanna do group tours again.. 1. Bad start. Pickup at 7am by a van. After an hour, transferred to a bus. Thought it was THE tour bus to SFO. But after another hour, had to transfer to another bus. So it was already past 9am that we started travelling for the tour. 2. Tour guide's ability to speak in english is unacceptable. Maybe this tour is really just FOR CHINESE. They should have told us. It's annoying that he's giving a long speech in chinese, but the english translation is (inaudible) one liner or two. 3. Early on the trip, it was announced that we had to pay USD154 (USD27 for mandatory tip for each person for the 3-day trip; USD50 for mandatory fee for several locations for the trip; USD42 for SFO cruise; USD35 for SFO deep tour -- which we never found out what). Paid for USD400 for 4pax before the actual trip. So paying an additional of USD154 for each person (USD616 in total) is unbelievable! More so, after the trip.. Soooo not worth it!!! 4. Deceiving itinerary! According to the itinerary we received prior to the trip, on the 2nd day, we had an option between Madam Tussauds & Exploratorium. But from our previous tours before, already saw a couple of these wax museums so we opted for Exploratorium. According to our agent, we'll have the OPTION on the actual day to pick which one we would join. But NOOOOOOO! The tour guide said, we only have to go to the wax museum. Unfortunately, it was one of the locations included in the USD50 mandatory fee. When we complained to the tour guide, he said, that's the problem with the agents, they would just say something to sell. So pissed off that I called the agent and told her how she lied about my options. She defended by saying it was the itinerary she received from the tour company. So who's lying?!? I don't know. We're already trapped. 5. Stopover for food is completely frustrating! On the way for food stopover (lunch & dinner), the tour guide kept on promoting these buffet restaurants. But he said, if we don't want to, our choice. WTF! We were in the middle of car accessories shops. We only had an hour to try and find a decent alternative. Of course, part of their business tactic, right? Didn't sell though. Who would want to eat in a buffet for barely an hour? No one would enjoy that. Besides, we don't even know the restaurant's reputation. 6. The only positive side I can say is we were in a decent hotel/inn for both nights. Although, it still deviated from the hotels mentioned in the itinerary. And another misinfomation.. we weren't told that breakfast was included in the 2nd hotel. Good thing we checked it ourselves. But the night before, we were informed, not just once, that he'll drop us to a place where we can get our breakfast on the way to Yosemite. This tour company doesn't deserve even this 1 star. Unfortunately, this is the lowest possible rate.. I will NEVER recommend this company to anyone!!!

The 5 best guided colosseum tours of 2024.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Courtesy of ArcheoRunning

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year – which means it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – is well worth it, though.

Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at, which is why tours are a popular way to explore. A good tour will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring this incredible place to life.

Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the hypogeum (Colosseum underground), you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

  • Best Overall: City Wonders – Colosseum & Ancient Rome Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

Best Underground: The Ultimate Italy – Colosseum: Underground and Ancient Rome Tour

  • Best Private: Roma Experience – Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
  • Best for Families: LivTours – The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Best Nighttime: Rome Tours – Colosseum Night Tour

Best overall: city wonders – colosseum & ancient rome tour with roman forum & palatine hill.

Price: From $42.86 per person Duration: 3 hours

This comprehensive tour covers the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum and the Via Sacra (Sacred Street), and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow their guide. Recent reviewers praise the expert guides, saying they are knowledgable about the history of the Colosseum (as well as the entrances with the shortest lines). Reviewers also appreciate the pace of the tour.

When booking, you have the option to choose your group size – 24, 15 or 10 participants – and tour rates vary accordingly. City Wonders also offers tours of the Vatican Museums , as well day trips to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and more.

Check prices & availability on:

Price: From $87.25 per person Duration: 3 hours

This highly rated tour provides access to the underground of the Colosseum, where you'll discover the network of passages, cells and chambers that once served as the backstage area of the arena. Along the way, you'll hear about the behind-the-scenes preparations of gladiators and wild animals; then, you'll explore the arena floor, imagining what it was like for them 2,000-some years ago. Finally, you'll spend some time at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Recent visitors highly recommend this tour, noting the underground portion made their visit to the Colosseum extra special.

Best Private: Roma Experience – Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

View of the Colosseum exterior on a Roma Experience Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

Courtesy of Roma Experience

Price: From 499 euros per person (about $548) Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes

For a deeper understanding of the Colosseum, a private tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can take. As an archaeologist, Bove has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other historic sites. Her Colosseum tour typically includes the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, the Arch of Constantine, Via Sacra and the House of Vestal Virgin. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum (Colosseum underground) when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Best for Families: LivTours – The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Interior of the Colosseum from The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access tour from LiveTours.

Courtesy of LivTours

Price: Adults from 139 euros (about $153); kids from $124 (about $136) Duration: 3 hours

Recent visitors praise the guides on this tour for bringing the stories about ancient Rome to life and entertaining everyone along the way — kids included.

Upon booking this tour, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants note that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Price: From $60.46 per person Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

A nighttime tour of the Colosseum not only affords an opportunity to see the famous landmark aglow, but it also allows visitors to avoid some of the crowds and high temps that come with a daytime visit. Recent tourgoers say they enjoyed the tour for these reasons, also noting that the guides are excellent. However, many wish the tour were a bit longer (or priced cheaper considering its short duration). The tour does not cover the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill.

Evening departure times vary by time of year.

Rome Tours offers a variety of other tours throughout the city, from a comprehensive daytime tour of the Colosseum to a bar crawl .

Frequently Asked Questions

Most tours last about three hours and require that you arrive at your departure point early. Factoring in transportation time, you'll want to allot at least a half-day of your vacation itinerary for the Colosseum.

The best time to visit the Colosseum is from November through February during the offseason (and when temperatures are cooler).

There isn't a dress code for the Colosseum, so plan to simply wear comfortable, seasonally appropriate attire (and know that summers in Rome can be extremely hot). No matter when you go, comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Leave the Adventure for the Tour, Not Your Travel Insurance

August 25, 2024

By: Kathleen A. De Riso, Vice President, Travel Services, Crum & Forster

People used to travel to relax. As a tour operator, you see the current trend: now, it’s all about the experience. Travelers want adventure, to learn, to go somewhere where they can immerse themselves in a new culture. In response, you’ve adapted your products to include elements like customizable packages, flexible itineraries, and new activities.

65% of consumers are more interested in adventure-style trips in 2024 than in previous years. 1

While these new offerings elevate consumers’ travel experiences and create more opportunities for you as an operator, they also introduce new challenges. Increased risks and greater complexity require tailored travel protection plans that provide robust coverage—whether your customers are lounging beachside in Vietnam or conquering Andean peaks.

“While off-the-shelf travel insurance plans may work for some forms of travel, they may not be the best fit for more customized tours,” says Susan Silfen, Executive Vice President of the Accident & Health Specialty Business Unit at Crum & Forster. “In many cases, they either fail to offer the right coverage for these unique locations and activities, or they have such broad coverage that operators and travelers often end up with more coverage than needed.”

Is your tour-operator travel protection plan keeping up with the needs of today’s travelers?

Working with an experienced travel insurer who has a flexible approach to underwriting can help you address this gap by providing tailored travel protection plans that help meet your needs and your customers’ needs. This approach can lead to greater cost efficiency and improved customer experiences.

Below we break down some of the most significant benefits of partnering with an experienced and flexible travel insurance underwriter.

Gain a competitive edge with coverage that meets your customers’ expectations

At a time when consumer expectations are ever-rising, and a single negative experience can impact brand reputations, tour operators should consider the importance of a quality travel protection plan. By investing in dependable insurance solutions, you can strengthen your reputation as a trustworthy and responsible operator and help give your customers the peace of mind they need to fully enjoy their travel experience.

Moreover, by highlighting robust insurance coverage, you can appeal to discerning customers who prioritize security, and educate those who may not be fully aware of its importance.

For example, a young couple wants to book a last-minute Antarctica cruise but may not have considered medical emergencies in that remote location could require expensive airlift evacuation. However, upon understanding the risks and learning that you offer coverage for them, they may be more inclined to book with you for added peace of mind.

Leverage travel industry expertise for custom insurance coverage

Striking the right balance in your insurance coverage can be crucial for maintaining competitive pricing while safeguarding against potential risks.

Consider the risk profiles of an Amazon River cruise tour versus a luxury tour of the Tuscan countryside. In both cases, a one-size-fits-all approach may not fit the unique needs of each traveler. Luxury tour coverage is likely to be insufficient for the specific health and wildlife risks of the Amazon. Likewise, coverage designed for an Amazon River cruise may be excessive for a relaxing trip around the Italian countryside.

Choose a travel insurance carrier that takes the time to understand the unique risks associated with your business – such as, your specific tour locations, and activities, traveler demographics, and business models. With protection plans designed around your operations and customer base, you can help to ensure adequate coverage and help travelers manage their risks.

Help ensure your protection plan stays relevant with ongoing reviews and guidance

Underwriters play a critical role in continually assessing the effectiveness of your insurance coverage. They monitor industry trends and periodically review coverage details to ensure your coverage stays relevant and aligned with your business as your products and services evolve.

“We’ve seen operators keep the same travel protection plans for years,” shares Mary Quill, Vice President, Specialty Products at Crum & Forster. “As underwriters, the key to our relationship is sitting down together throughout the year to share the experience of their protection plan while refreshing our understanding of their business, new or updated tours, their metrics, their clientele, to make sure they’re all still aligned. At the same time, we review our client servicing to make sure it is continuing to meet their expectations.”

During these assessments, insurers may also provide valuable insights into trends to help identify any necessary plan adjustments.

Unique travel experiences demand equally unique coverage

In a world where unique travel experiences are redefining the industry, as a tour operator, you may need insurance that’s as distinctive as your offerings. Whether you’re adding new tours to your portfolio or looking for ideal coverage for existing ones, partnering with an insurance provider with extensive experience in crafting custom protection plans can help you confidently address the specific needs and risks of your travel products, and protect your business and your customers.

Crum & Forster offers flexible group travel insurance options tailored to cover even the most one-of-a-kind travel experiences. Contact us to learn how we can help you protect your business and your customers.

The one-stop travel site—alongside Hotels.com and VRBO—just released Unpack '24 , a travel trends analysis for the coming year. They’re often less crowded, tend to be a little unexpected, and can be every bit as delightful as the tried-and-true destinations.”

Intrigued by the idea of booking a stellar vacation for a fraction of the price? Check out Expedia Group’s Top 10 Travel Destination Dupes, below, which are listed as the original destination of inspiration and the dupe that mirrors it.

A COVID-19 wave has surged in all US regions. Know the symptoms and new variant

Portrait of Janet Loehrke

The U.S. is experiencing its largest wave in COVID-19 cases since January.

To help public health experts stop outbreaks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to test wastewater, which acts as an early warning system for outbreaks.

Wastewater sample data shows a regional trend of COVID-19 is significantly growing. Right now, the KP.3.1.1 variant makes up nearly 37% of the cases; its related strain KP.3 follows at 17%, according to CDC data . Data collected late last week by the CDC showed that 32 states have reported "very high" levels of wastewater viral activity nationwide.

COVID-19 wastewater monitoring by region

Even in cases when a community's residents are not showing symptoms, it is possible to test wastewater for the presence of infectious diseases. The data from the CDC can detect possible changes in the levels of illnesses in your region.

Certain regions have been more severely affected than others. Western states have had the most reported cases, followed by the South.

States face COVID-19 late-summer surge

The CDC estimates that COVID-19 infections will grow or likely grow in 25 states, decline or likely decline in five states, and remain stable in 17 states.

"At this point, COVID-19 can be described as endemic throughout the world," Aron Hall, deputy director for science at the CDC's coronavirus and other respiratory viruses division, told NPR in an interview.

CDC's projected COVID-19 growth status by state:

When is a disease endemic, epidemic or a pandemic?

There's a new dominant COVID-19 variant: FLirT

The COVID-19 virus continues to be a notorious shape-shifter.

Today there are more than 26 variants of the original COVID-19 strain. The newest variant, FLirT, includes KP.3, KP.3.1.1. and KP.2 Since early spring, these strains have been the fastest-growing omicron subvariants circulating in all U.S. regions.

Symptoms of COVID-19

A breakdown of possible symptoms:

The FLirT variant symptoms are typically milder than past variants from the pandemic, which include fever, coughing, exhaustion and loss of smell or taste, according the Johns Hopkins University . On the CDC's website , symptoms can range in severity from mild to severe and can appear two to 14 days after a viral exposure.
