Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Expert Review: Cape Town Big 5 Safari 2024

Reader notification

Are you looking for the best malaria-free Big 5 safari park near Cape Town?

Then you’re going to want to read this review. At 620 km², Sanbona is the biggest private reserve I’d been to in all my years of travelling in Africa. I was amazed at the wide-open feel of this free-roaming reserve. I had some incredible wildlife sightings!

🦁 Contact Go2Africa to set up your unforgettable trip from Cape Town to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve!

The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is only a 3-hour drive from Cape Town city centre, but it offers a gentle, real Big 5 experience. It’s one of the largest private reserves in South Africa and is home to rare white lions, and over 3,500-year-old rock art. It’s stunning.

The reserve is one of the few non-profit reserves in Africa and is heavily focused on conservation , which I love. While you’re here you can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, and more great activities.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Review

Where the reserve is located.

Address : R62 Montagu, Western Cape, South Africa

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a beautiful, premier wildlife conservation area . It’s in the same province as Cape Town – Western Cape, in the Little Karoo region near the pretty little town of Montagu.

Montagu is in the Langeberg mountains and is best known for its hot springs, orchards, and vineyards. AND for its proximity to Sabona Wildlife Reserve, just 47 km to the east.

In a nutshell, Sanbona is a unique wilderness experience that blends conservation, adventure, and luxury. All in one spectacular package, just a few hours east of Cape Town.

And due to its location in a part of South Africa that’s away from typical malaria zones, the park is considered malaria-free.

Dwyka Tented Lodge at Sanbona

What to Expect When You Get Here

When I arrived at Sanbona, it was an enormous, sun-drenched golden grassland. The Warmwaterberg Mountains rose up in the background. It’s a spectacular place.

There are 3 different accommodations at Sanbona: the Dwyka Tented Lodge, Gondwana Family Lodge , and Tilney Manor. You can also add on a walking safari at the more rugged Sanbona Explorer Camp.

I chose Dwyka. I love a tent when I’m in Africa, though it’s not usually this luxurious. Each tent has its own heated plunge pool, deck, a large bathtub, and a shower.

Each of the options is very thoughtfully integrated into the landscape , keeping the focus on the natural environment. And every lodge provides a distinct experience.

Choose from family-centred, modern African elegance to secluded settings that highlight the solitude and beauty of the Little Karoo.

Sanbora Wildlife Reserve Activities

Games drives.

Like any activity that revolves around wild animals, you just can’t count on them. I was lucky on some of my game drives at Sanbona and saw most of the Big 5 – elephants, leopards, lions, rhinos, and buffalos. Only one leopard, though those elusive beauties!

There’s no guarantee that you’ll see everything every time , but your chances are good. Sanbona is known for its diverse wildlife populations and extensive conservation efforts.

You won’t see large herds here, but everything is completely wild. The animals aren’t fed, they hunt (or graze or browse…), which makes me happy.

Desert and southwestern black rhinos, as well as cheetahs, have been reintroduced in the area. The reserve also boasts a genetically diverse population of Cape Mountain zebras.

Sanbona is home to the Little 5 , too. These are the leopard tortoise, the elephant shrew, the rhinoceros beetle, the buffalo weaver bird, and the antlion. No guarantee on the Ugly 5 though!

The open safari vehicle is comfortable, and the guides know everything about the area and the animals.

* You should be aware that littles under 4 years old aren’t permitted on game drives, but childcare is available.

A shaggy female kudu in the yellow grassm agains the mountain and blue sky backdrop - Sanbona Wildlife Reserve expert review.

The guided wilderness walks at Sanbona are my favourite activity, like they are everywhere. It’s a fantastic way to get up close to the plants, smaller creatures, and birds in the unique Little Karoo ecosystem.

The focus is on conservation and having a genuine wilderness experience. The guides can also tell you all about the local ecology, conservation efforts, and the history of the reserve.

The bush walks are tailored to the fitness levels and interests of the guests, so they’re accessible to a wide range of ages. But keep in mind that, for safety reasons, kids under the age of 14 years are not permitted on the walks .

The one issue I had was that the bush walk guides were armed. Smart, I know, and common on many bush walks in Africa – there are predators out there.

But I always feel like an animal could get shot just because I decided to take a walk.

Of course, this wouldn’t happen unless there was absolutely no choice – it’s just a quirk of mine.

Naturally, the safety of the guests is their number one priority. The guides are awesome, well-trained, and super-knowledgeable. They can not only track and spot wildlife with spooky accuracy but also keep everyone safe and comfortable.

More activities

The reserve is home to 3,500-year-old Khoi-Khoi and San rock art, and tours of these creations are available. You can also go bird watching – now, don’t roll your eyes! I never gave birds a second thought, either, until I travelled to South Africa.

The birdlife here is fascinating! Giant birds, colourful birds, tiny birds, ugly and pretty birds. I’m afraid I didn’t have time for a dedicated tour at Sanbona, but if you do, go. And even if you don’t, you’ll see some pretty amazing birds around.

Photography is a no-brainer – there’s so much to take pictures of! And please, don’t forget to look up at night. The star gazing is unreal. If you’ve never seen the Milky Way, well, hang onto your hat!

The Relaxation Retreat (aka. The Spa)

This is one of the best massages I’ve ever had. You can also choose a foot massage, a facial, or a full body scrub. I even heard stories of a sauna and steam room at the other lodges on-site. Just blissful.

Each of the accommodation options has its own dining room, and the food is good and plentiful. The wonderful staff is more than willing to accommodate preferences and health restrictions.

Dwyka is home to a very lovely wine cellar.

Kids enjoying the Eco-explorer group, checking an some old bones in the garden sunshine

Children’s Activities

Not having kids myself, I can only tell you what I learned about what you can do with yours at the reserve.

First, Sanbona does offer child care if you’d like to go on a game drive and you have kids too young to come along (<5 yrs).

And if you’re staying at the Gondwana Family Lodge, they also have a program called Eco-Explorers. Your 4-and-unders can go on short trail walks through the lodge gardens, do arts and crafts, and have fun while the grown-ups explore.

The History of Sanbona

The history of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pretty inspiring story. Of transformation, conservation, and dedication to preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.

Initially, the land that’s now Sanbona was used for agricultural purposes – crops and livestock. The idea for a private nature reserve, originally named the Cape Wildlife Reserve, began in 1998.

The area was expanded, and Sanbona’s rewilding efforts began. The intent was to create a self-sustaining ecosystem similar to what the area might have looked like 300 years ago.

This included the reintroduction of the Big Five and other species significant to the area’s biodiversity. Over the years Sanbona has become a haven for wildlife.

You can see things like the critically endangered riverine rabbit, desert and southwestern black rhinos after nearly 200 years of local extinction, and cheetahs.

It’s actually the first protected area in the Western Cape to reintroduce cheetahs into the wild.

I know I tend to go on about this, but the reserve’s focus on conservation is admirable. By 2020, their commitment to conservation was further solidified.

This was when it was rezoned from agricultural to conservation use and registered as a non-profit company. This ensured that it could continue to serve as a biodiversity centre for future generations. How great is that?!

Pros & Cons of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

All in all, here are my impressions of Sanbona.

  • Sanbona is the most beautiful reserve so close to Cape Town, with the best wildlife experiences
  • there are great options, even a lodge geared toward families, all fairly small.
  • the reserve respects its animals, and conservation is a priority
  • it is wheelchair/disabled accessible
  • malaria-free
  • there are no budget options here
  • due to its size and history, there are no large herds of animals at Sanbona
  • that’s it!

Getting to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve from Cape Town

There are a couple of options when it comes to getting to the reserve.

1. I recommend my go-to for all things safari – Go2Africa , just because they know everything about everything. They will work with you to make sure you’re getting just what you want.

Go2Africa will arrange everything from your stay at the reserve to your transportation from Cape Town. It just doesn’t get easier. Go to their website to arrange your trip to Sanbona.

2. You can also rent a car and drive there yourself. It’s actually a great opportunity to explore South Africa’s Wine Route – the world’s longest wine route, Route 62.

It’ll take you through beautiful landscapes, pretty towns, and vineyards, of course. If you love a road trip, then this might be your best way to go. You can visit wine estates, taste the local cuisine, and discover small towns along the way.

I would definitely recommend allowing yourself some extra travel time to fully enjoy what Route 62 has to offer. There are farm stalls, antique shops, wine cellars, and not to mention quaint roadside restaurants to stop at.

I like to rent through Discovery Cars when I travel. They’ll show you local rental places as well as big companies, so you get the best choices and can support local.

More to Do Around Sanbona

While you’re in the beautiful area, I hope you have some time to do a bit of exploring. There are some things to do outside of the reserve that are worth your time.

  • Wellington, for instance, is known for its berry farm. Take a guided tour if you like, or pick your own strawberries, youngberries, raspberries, or Cape gooseberries.
  • The R60 past Worcester lets you see the colourful Nuy Valley, a hidden gem for wine lovers.
  • In the town of Robertson, you can enjoy a wine safari experience or a coffee break at Strictly Coffee.
  • Ashton is another good spot, home to Platform 62. Here you can taste and buy a wide range of local wines and spirits.
  • If you’re interested in a detour, La Montanara has a unique cheese and wine pairing experience.
  • Montagu has some historic charm and an art district. There are activities like vintage car tours and cycling, and ample opportunities for nature walks and hiking. The Cogmanskloof Hiking Trail in Montagu is a popular choice, with gorgeous views and a chance to explore the local flora and fauna.
  • If you go as far as Barrydale, Diesel & Crème has legendary milkshakes. It’s also got some unique cafes, artisanal shops, and art galleries to wander through.

Summing It Up: Sanbona Wilderness Reserve Expert Review

If you’re hoping to find an incredible wildlife experience close to Cape Town – you’ve got it! Sanbona Wildlife Reserve will give you that genuine feeling of spotting wildlife in the bush.

You can even sit outside and listen to them at night. Nothing will make you want to stay up all night than being afraid you’ll miss hearing something in the dark. Hippos sound beautiful when the sun goes down. Or is that just me who thinks so?

Happy travels!

Situated along Route 62, in the arid Warmwaterberg Mountains of the Klein Karoo region, Sanbona is not only luxurious in its accommodation options, but also environmentally-friendly. Dwyka Sanbona Safari

Sanbona Safari Packages

South africa holiday, 10 days – from $4500.

For this memorable South Africa holiday, we have combined staying in Cape Town with a malaria-free Big-5 game safari, not far from Cape Town too, plus some fantastic activities that are unique to the area including a helicopter flight over the Cape Peninsula and wine tasting at a wine farm. 5* hotels and lodge for this luxurious stay.

Introducing the Sanbona Safari Lodges

The old farmhouse, Tilney Manor, consists of six spacious open plan suites, styled to the needs of the modern traveller in muted tones, each of which has its own private veranda. Similar in style is the thatched Gondwana Family Lodge, made up of suites of interconnecting rooms ideal for families. With a nod to this, there’s a children’s playroom inside, and another play area outside, along with a child-friendly pool.

Nine luxury tents make up the year-round Dwyka Camp, with a further location, the Explorers Camp, available during the summer months of October to April. Dwyka’s tents offer an incredible array of facilities, from en suite bathrooms to heated Jacuzzis with decked area, while the Explorers Camp is a little more basic, with shared bathroom facilities, for those looking to experience the Little Karoo in greater depth.

Tilney Manor

Sanbona’s turn of the century farmhouse, Tilney Manor, has been fully and luxuriously renovated to provide six airy open plan suites complete with private verandas looking out onto the stunning Karoo mountain landscape and indigenous garden.

Tilney Manor

The richly decorated suites expertly echo the peace and tranquillity they seek to provide, allowing guests total relaxation between game drives and activities, whether from the outdoor dining facilities, shared therapy rooms, or the wooden deck that encloses the rim-full pool.

Dwyka Tented Camp

Magically blended into the surrounding landscape in a horseshoe-shaped bend in a dry riverbed for a truly authentic yet secluded ambiance. Tranquillity is taken to another level at the Relaxation Retreat, while a splendid boma provides a shared space in which to dine and share stories across the campfire.

Dwyka Tented Camp comprises just nine luxury canopies. While seven of the nine are furnished with king-sized beds (the remaining two offer twin accommodation), each has amenities that make a stay more than special – such as the private deck areas and heated Jacuzzis in addition to indoor and outdoor showers.

Gondwana Family Lodge

This spacious thatched lodge has incredible views across to the Anysberg Mountains and over the Bellair Dam, while providing families and groups all the comforts of the modern world inside.

GONDWANA FAMILY LODGE

The 12 authentically styled suite of rooms are interconnecting, while children are specifically catered for in the indoor and outdoor play areas as well as the child-friendly pool, ensuring the whole family can make the most of this stunning setting.

Explorers Camp

The fully-qualified guides that lead the walk are there to point out the smallest of details while leading the two-day trail. The camp can be experienced between South Africa’s summer months of October and April, with departures every Friday.

Part of a walking tour that explores the lesser visited areas of the Karoo, this season camp is made up of luxury tents on a shaded riverbed using shared bathroom facilities.

Shared Spaces

An indigenous garden of endemic plants adds color and interest to Sanbona’s proximity, while the rim-full swimming pool and lounge area is a perennial favorite with guests. To take full advantage of the reserve’s five-star experience guests can also opt for spa sessions at Relaxation Retreat, while a boma provides a shared space in which to dine outdoors and share stories of the day’s adventures with fellow guests.

Safari Experience

The 58,000 hectares that make up Sanbona provide ample space for all the region’s wildlife. The expertise of the trained guides means guests are sure to experience the wonder of encountering majestic elephant and regal lion, to mention just two species, within their natural habitats, a guarantee that is hard to match in larger game reserves.

Sanbona Near Cape Town

There are daily game drives taking in the reserve in search of its free roaming animals, as well as nature walks through the surrounding bushveld, a particular highlight for bird lovers of all ages. Learn more about the night sky around the campfire as night falls, and then jump into a boat for a very special waterborne safari come daybreak.

About Sanbona

Sanbona is a private wildlife reserve situated along route 62. The longest wine route in the world. It only takes 3 hours to drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve from Cape Town and it is located in the Klien Karoo, one of the most diverse areas in South Africa. The reserve is 58,000 hectares of exquisite wild landscapes and folding mountains. Sanbona is full of wildlife, fauna and flora and even rock art that is going back centuries. Once upon a time the San Khoi tribe roamed these very landscapes contributing to the name, Sanbona.

Sanbona Wildlire Reserve is the closet free roaming big 5 reserve to Cape Town and is the only place in the world that is home to free and self-sustaining White lions. The game drives are 3 hours long and drive through 3 different biomes. Wildlife that you might see at Sanbona are elephants, lions, cheetahs, zebras and a huge selection of buck species. There is also a magnificent selection of birds that you can see on the safari and at the lodge. The game drives at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve are the highlight of the trip, but it doesn’t stop there. Sanbona offers a wide selection of incredible activities and experiences out in the wild and in the retreats.

The meals are impeccable and the service and hospitality at Sanbona are in a league of their own. The three luxury lodges to choose from are again a step above the rest. There is also the Explorer camp, which is a two day journey for the more adventurous. For this option you are taken out into the wild on a walking experience, where you will stay in luxury tents completely off the grid.

The Safari Experience

Once you arrive at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve you will be blown away as you get welcomed into the lodge. Check in, lunch and a tour around the lodge is on the cards. You will have some time at leisure to explore or relax for that matter and then it will be time for your first sunset safari drive. After some magic in the bush, it’s time to freshen up and get ready for dinner.

In the mornings the staff will make sure that you are awake and ready to go and the day will start with a sunrise safari drive. There are two safaris per day, one at sunrise and one in the evening at sunset. You will be served 3 meals a day and during the rest of the day, you can enjoy the other experiences that the reserve has to offer. You can walk the trails, watch the different birds, go and see the rock art or relax at the retreat. During the safaris, you will have coffee at sunrise and a sun downer at sunset. At night after dinner, you can enjoy the sounds of African nights and you can watch the stars. You will be surprised about how different the stars look at night, at the reserve.

Your last day at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve will again start with a sunrise safari and breakfast in the lodge. Then it’s time to relax before your leisurely check out and departure.

Activities At Sanbona

The activities and guided experiences at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve are truly magical and give you the opportunity to experience this beautiful wildlife reserve to its true potential. Each and every activity has something extraordinary to offer. The rock art excursions take you back to over 3500 years ago and tell stories of the San and Khoi-Khoi tribes. The Sanbona boat safari takes you down the Ballair dam to view the wildlife and the 40 different bird species which call this dam their home. When you aren’t on the safari, you can consider going on the guided nature walks to explore the flora and fauna. There are walking and hiking trails to suit all levels of fitness or you can relax and enjoy a range of treatments at the relaxation retreats. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a true haven for photographers with the ideal lighting over the magnificent landscapes, wildlife and awe-inspiring sightings.

Please note some activities are seasonal and the boat safari runs due to water levels. Children are welcome at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and can enjoy the Kids on Safari program. However, children under the age of 4 aren’t allowed to go on the safari drives. This is for safety reasons.

From a day-trip adventure to a weekend escape, find whales and the Big Five with these wild getaways in the Cape!

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by travellers planning a trip to the Mother City. Happily, the answer is 'Yes indeed', and while the Western Cape isn't quite in the same league as a bushveld escape to the Kruger National Park, you can certainly enjoy a taste of safari close to Cape Town.

Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the 'Big Five' (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching offshore. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

In the evening, you might be lucky enough to spot black-backed jackal and bat-eared foxes. If you’d rather not go it alone, guided nature drives are available.

4.  !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

!Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

Less than an hour from Cape Town along the R27 ‘West Coast’ road, the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the San people of southern Africa, and the recent addition of luxury cottages and cabins has made it a perfect weekend escape.

But alongside the cultural insights you can also enjoy a ‘safari-lite’ experience here, with the 850-hectare reserve home to herds of eland, springbok, zebra, wildebeest and other small game. There’s plenty of birdlife too – keep a keen eye out for Yellow-billed kites and Jackal buzzards – and with no predators on the reserve you can happily hike, bike and run without worrying about toothy residents. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Or sign up for the 90-minute nature drives led by local guides, who will share the history of the reserve on an entertaining ramble that delivers superb views of the wild west coast.

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the fybos-clad hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

7.  Nuwejaars Wetlands

Nuwejaars Wetlands

No visit to the Western Cape is complete without a trip to Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. And on the Agulhas Plains hardy winemakers make full use of the ancient soils and cooling sea winds to craft remarkable Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. But after a tasting at Black Oystercatcher Wines, be sure to book a guided nature drive through the nearby Nuwejaars Wetlands .

This remarkable conservation project has seen 25 landowners, and the historic mission village of Elim, work together to conserve over 46 000 hectares of delicate wetlands in the region. Guided morning and afternoon nature drives allow travellers to discover this unique conservation area, where you can spot eland, buffalo, bontebok and hartebeest, while the deeper wetlands are home to thriving pods of hippopotamus. Twitcher? The Nuwejaars wetlands are home to more than 200 species, including rare Southern black korhaan and Secretary bird.

8.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. 9.  Watch whales in Hermanus

Watch whales in Hermanus

Hermanus is one of the most popular tourist towns in the Western Cape's Overberg region, as famous for its seafront restaurants and clifftop walk as the annual visitors that flock here each winter. Whale watching is what brings the crowds, as Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve from June through to November. You can spot them from the clifftop paths or join a boat tour and spend a day getting up close to these mighty marine mammals. Kayak tours offer another thrilling opportunity to see whales – and sometimes dolphins and seals – from the water.

10.  Goudkop Bush Camp

Goudkop Bush Camp

This low-key wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town, close to the famous beaches of Elands Bay. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, and look for kudu, eland and zebra and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

The Sanbona or Shamwari Wildlife Reserve?

Sanbona or Shamwari Reserve

The Sanbona Reserve and the Shamwari Reserve are both excellent wildlife reserves in South Africa. Both Sanbona and Shamwari Reserve contain the Big 5 and both have very strong conservation and restoration goals. As both of these excellent wildlife reserves also offer a premium safari in a choice of different luxury lodges, do you choose the Sanbona or Shamwari Wildlife Reserve?

Here, we will mention the similarities and also the differences between these reserves to help you make the best choice for your safari.

First, let’s have an introduction to both reserves…

The Shamwari Wildlife Reserve

Founded in 1990, the main objective of the Shamwari Wildlife Reserve was to recover the wildlife diversity and environment that once existed on the Eastern Cape before the arrival of Europeans.

The Shamwari Reserve covers 25,000 hectares of savanna, thicket, and woodland habitat, and is accessed from the city of Port Elizabeth.

Home to the Big 5, enjoy spotting the lions, rhino, elephants, Cape buffalo, and leopards, but also many others. The wildlife here now represents the highest concentration of animals on the Eastern and Southern Cape.

Other animals you can spot on safari include kudu and other antelopes, hippo, cheetah, giraffes, and many birds. Some of the favorite birds to spot are the pale chanting goshawks, booted eagles, black shouldered kites, and secretary birds.

Shamwari Game Reserve

The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve was founded in 1998 and now stretches over 54,000 hectares of desert-like wilderness. Following the objectives of the Shamwari Reserve above, the Sanbona Reserve was established to help restore the animals and plants that lived here before the arrival of Europeans.

The Sanbona Reserve is located on the Western Cape and accessed from South Africa’s attractive city of Cape Town. The area of the reserve is known as the Little Karoo.

Within the Sanbona Reserve, you can find all members of the Big 5 and many more examples of African wildlife. Enjoy spotting elephants, lions, rhino, cheetah, buffalo, and different antelope on safari tours within the reserve.

In addition to the iconic African wildlife, the reserve is home to many other attractions. Enjoy many different mammals, but also the hundreds of birds, fascinating plants, and the beautiful scenery. In addition to the terrestrial features, this is one of the best places in South Africa to see the constellations. Head out on night tours or simply observe the stunning beauty of the Milky Way from the comfort of your suite.

Differences in Environment & Wildlife

Although both the Shamwari Reserve and Sanbona Reserve are located in South Africa, they both protect different environments. They are also different in size and landscape.

Let’s have a look at the differences in environment and wildlife for the Shamwari Reserve and Sanbona Reserve.

Shamwari Reserve

With 25,000 hectares of savanna, thicket, and woodland habitats, the Shamwari Reserve is more environmentally diverse than Sanbona. The reserve also contains more iconic habitat you may imagine when picturing an African safari.

Within the Shamwari Game Reserve, you can find the Bushman’s River. On visits near the river, you’re likely to spot elephants, different birds, and other animals coming to drink. The river can be seen from a number of the different lodges within the reserve and is a great place for birding.

Shamwari Game Reserve

The wildlife in Shamwari is at a higher concentration than the Sanbona Reserve. Shamwari is the best choice if your interest is seeing as many of the large iconic African animals as possible. The Shamwari Reserve contains one of the highest concentrations of large wildlife in the country. If you want to see all members of the Big 5 for example on a short stay, we recommend the Shamwari Reserve.

Sanbona Reserve

The Sanbona Reserves is twice the size of Shamwari at 54,000 hectares of desert-like wilderness. Although a less diverse habitat, this was the environment of the San people, a nomadic group of hunter gatherers.

Although having a lower concentration of large iconic wildlife, the landscape is a fantastic place to relax while spotting some of the different African icons wandering through the reserve. There are also some different animals and plants here than Shamwari. In addition to the beautiful landscape and wildlife, enjoy visiting sites of ancient rock art from the area’s historic inhabitants.

The Sanbona Reserve also includes the vast and impressive Bellair Dam, which makes it easier to spot some different wildlife. Enjoy finding some of the Big 5 and also the many hippos. The Bellair Dam is also a fantastic area for birding with over 40 species spotted in this one area.

With a different environment, you will also see different wildlife here than in Shamwari. A population of riverine rabbits that only live in the Little Karoo was discovered in 2006 and there are many other smaller animals to find.

Sanbona Reserve

Tours & Excursions

As the reserves are home to some different attractions, each one has a few different tours and activities.

From the Shamwari Reserve lodges , you can enjoy some different activities in the reserve. The main excursions are on game drives to scout the reserve for the different animals with particular focus on the the Big 5 and iconic wildlife. In addition to the game drives, enjoy birdwatching tours, choose family safaris, photo safaris, and visits to the different rehabilitations centers and sanctuaries within the reserve.

In addition to the game drives and various sanctuaries, you can add on a stay at the Shamwari Explorer Camp . The camp provides walking safaris and a very comfortable camping experience in the Shamwari Reserve.

The different accommodation options in the Sanbona Reserve offer some excellent tours to spot the reserve’s incredible wildlife, landscapes, and other attractions. A significant part of the experience are the game drives to explore the Sanbona environment for some of the iconic African animals. However, there are a few more exploration options offered in Sanbona than in the Shamwari Reserve.

In addition to the game drives through Sanbona Reserve, you can enjoy birding excursions, walking tours, and even cruises on the Bellair Dam to spot the hippos, water-living wildlife, and large mammals at the water’s edge. The walking tours are one of the favorite excursions, as you can feel the exhilaration of this landscape in the footsteps of the original explorers. You will also visit the areas home to ancient rock art from the San people who once inhabited this environment.

In addition to the walking tours offered from the various accommodation options, you can also add a camping and exploring experience at the Sanbona Explorer Camp.

Family Safaris

Both of the Sanbona Reserve and Shamwari Reserve are excellent choices for an African safari for single visitors, couples, groups, and families. They also offer some great options for families with young children. Both the Sanbona and Shamwari Reserve have some lodges designed around families. Each reserve also offers some additional activities and facilities for kids.

Shamwari Reserve For Families

The Shamwari Reserve provides some specific family safaris to help teach adults and children alike the importance of conservation, while offering a luxury getaway. Although children under 4 are not permitted on game drives themselves, the Riverdene Family Lodge and Sarili Lodge offer an extra child minding service. Both of these lodges offer a swimming pool with shallow children’s area and some additional features.

The Riverdene Family Lodge

From the Sarili Lodge, enjoy game drives through the reserve scouting for the Big 5 and other wildlife. Tours offer fantastic wildlife, beautiful scenery, and also visits to the different sanctuaries inside Shamwari Reserve.

The Sarili Lodge

The Sanbona Reserve For Families

Sanbona Reserve also offers an excellent family safari in luxury accommodation. As with the Shamwari Reserve, children under 4 are not permitted on the game drives themselves. However, there are some interesting children’s activities in Sanbona Reserve at the Gondwana Family Lodge.

The Gondwana Family Lodge

Gondwana Lodge - Shamwari or Sanbona

The Gondwana Family Lodge offers a luxurious family lodge in the Sanbona Reserve. Styled as a traditional thatched Karoo homestead, the Gondwana Family Lodge provides large, comfortable suites with beautiful views over the Karoo plains and Anysberg Mountains.

The Gondwana Family Lodge suites can accommodate two people sharing with one child. Four pairs of suites are then interconnecting to accommodate families. They feature underfloor heating, air-conditioning, a private deck or balcony, and an en-suite bathroom with shower, twin basins, and freestanding bath. Facilities at the lodge include an outdoor pool with shallow area, children’s playroom with TV, an outdoor dining boma, a lounge with fireplace and satellite TV, a steam room, the Relaxation Retreat, a gift boutique, and WiFi. For children, the lodge also offers the special ‘Kids on Safari’ program.

Enjoy some fantastic tours from the lodge on game drives to find different iconic animals, walking tours to experience Africa on foot, and cruises on the Bellair Dam. See the different elephants, rhino, lions, cheetah, and smaller wildlife of the Sanbona Reserve.

The Gondwana Lodge

The Gondwana Lodge

Reserve accommodation.

Both the Sanbona and Shamwari Reserves offer premium luxury accommodation, delicious cuisine, and tours through the reserves to find fantastic African wildlife and beautiful scenery. Here, we will select two of the top top options. For the full selection, you can see our guide to either Shamwari Reserve Lodges or Sanbona Reserve Lodges .

The Eagles Crag Lodge

Eagles Crag Lodge - Shamwari or Sanbona

In the Shamwari Reserve, the premium accommodation is the Eagles Crag Lodge. However, there are many other Shamwari Reserve lodges to choose from.

The Eagles Crag Lodge is elegantly styled with glass and stone to merge with the surrounding rock faces. Enjoy your own niche of the woodland environment with the eagles flying over the rock faces. You can even see some fantastic birds from your suite, which is equipped with a special bird-spotting scope.

Suites feature en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, indoor and outdoor shower facilities, bird-spotting scope, and a private deck with plunge pool.

The lodge facilities then include two therapy rooms with hydro baths, a steam room and sauna, business center, and a lounge with fireplace.

From the Eagles Crag lodge, enjoy some fantastic safaris in the Shamwari Reserve to find the iconic Big 5, beautiful scenery, and other fantastic wildlife, including cheetahs, giraffes, and a diversity of interesting birds.

The Eagles Crag Lodge

The Dwyka Tented Lodge

Dwyka Tented Lodge - Shamwari or Sanbona

As the premium accommodation in the Sanbona Reserve, the Dwyka Tented Lodge has been styled with influences from the Khoisan hunter-gatherers who lived a nomadic lifestyle in the region. However, there are other options for Sanbona Reserve lodges to choose from.

The lodge is of a tented camp design, while maintaining the comforts and facilities you would expect from luxury accommodation. The nine spacious tents can each accommodate two adults and offer air-conditioning, luxurious king beds, en-suite bathrooms, large private decks, and a spa bath.

The lodges itself then provides a Relaxation Retreat, an open-air dining boma, a lounge with fireplace and satellite tv, a wine cellar, and a gift boutique.

From the Dwyka Tented Lodge, you can enjoy fantastic safaris to find some iconic African animals. Spot some of the Big 5, fascinating birds and other wildlife, cruises to see water-living wildlife, birding tours, and even some fascinating walking safaris.

The Dwyka Tented Lodge

Sanbona or Shamwari Explorer Camp?

The Shamwari Explorer Camp - Shamwari Game Reserve

Both the Sanbona and Shamwari reserve offer some fantastic camping experiences from their reserve camps. But do you choose the Sanbona or Shamwari Explorer Camp?

Both the Sanbona and Shamwari Explorer Camps are operated as a two night walking safari on weekends over the summer months. The distances walked each day from both camps can be 4 hours.

So what are the differences?

In summary, the Shamwari Explorer Camp offers a bit more luxury, but is also lightly fenced. The Sanbona Explorer Camp is then unfenced and provides a little more excitement because of this. However, note that you are more likely to see a few more iconic big mammal sightings from the Shamwari Explorer Camp because of the higher concentration of big game animals in the reserve.

It’s Not Too Late to Book an Affordable Getaway for Labor Day Weekend

Miami Beach and hotels.

It's hard to believe, but the summer travel season is already coming to a close. Even though Labor Day Weekend is less than two weeks away, it’s not too late to score inexpensive flights and cheap hotel stays in some sunny locales. Procrastinators are being rewarded this year, as late-summer airfares in general are trending lower compared to 2023. According to data from the travel booking site Hopper , the average domestic airfare clocks in at $211 round-trip for Labor Day Weekend, which is five percent lower than last year. Even flights to Europe are averaging out to $798 round-trip, which is a 10 percent drop from Labor Day 2023.

As you're booking cheap flights , one factor to keep in mind is that many of the lowest airfares depart from airports that are expected to be the busiest over the holiday weekend, and therefore will likely be fairly hectic. The top five busiest airports over Labor Day will be Los Angeles (LAX), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), Newark (EWR), and New York -JFK, according to travel search site Kayak .

Whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure , a lively nightlife scene, or to plop down on a beautiful beach and do nothing, here are seven destinations with affordable flight options—just don't wait too long to book.

If you’re willing to bet on sunny skies, you could be rewarded with an affordable beach vacation with access to vibrant nightlife. There’s nothing quite like the dramatic coastline of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, located along Lake Superior in Northern Michigan . The sheer faces of the area’s sandstone cliffs stand in striking contrast above the lake’s blue and tranquil waters. While summer travelers flock to the national park ’s beaches, waterfalls, sand dunes, and forests, it’s still possible to squeeze in an inexpensive visit for Labor Day. Plenty of hotels in the area are still available for $300 per night or less, according to Kayak’s search feature . Although an airlift to the closest airport, Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport (MQT), is costly, the lakeshore is about a five-hour drive from some of the biggest cities in the Midwest, including Chicago , Milwaukee , and Detroit.

Where to stay in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:

  • For a cabin in the woods: Chapel Forest Cabin
  • For a cozy, modern two-bedroom: Marquette cottage
  • For a fire pit and hot tub: Tiny home for four

See what jennifer lopez was doing on the day she officially separated from ben affleck.

Jennifer Lopez was spotted alone in New York City on her and Ben Affleck’s official date of separation .

The “Jenny From the Block” singer, who filed for divorce from the actor on Tuesday, put on a serious face as she left an apartment building in the Big Apple on April 26.

She wore a beige sweater, oversized jeans and platform shoes for the outing, accessorizing with gold hoops, sunglasses and a Hermès Birkin bag.

Jennifer Lopez is seen on April 26, 2024 in New York City.

Lopez, 55, was still wearing her massive 8.5-carat green diamond ring despite calling it quits with Affleck.

The actress also wore her hair slicked back in a bun and appeared makeup-free.

She flashed a somber look at paparazzi while walking on the sidewalk.

Affleck was photographed nearly a week later on May 2 while taking his 12-year-old son, Samuel, to school in Los Angeles.

The “Gone Girl” star appeared downcast as he stepped out wearing a gray-and-white sweater paired with jeans and Nike sneakers.

Page Six confirmed J.Lo filed for divorce from the Oscar winner Tuesday, which happened to be the second anniversary of their extravagant Georgia wedding ceremony .

The music hitmaker listed April 26 as the date of their split. TMZ was first to report the news.

Jennifer Lopez is seen on April 26, 2024 in New York City.

The estranged couple reportedly did not have a prenuptial agreement , but she requested spousal support be waived for both herself and Affleck.

While insiders previously told Page Six that the “Marry Me” actress was worried about how their divorce would affect their kids , we’ve now learned that the pair’s five children are ready to move on .

“His kids are taking it fine as are hers,” a source close to the situation told us Tuesday. “Everybody is ready to move on.”

Ben Affleck is seen out for a walk with his son Samuel on May 2.

Affleck shares Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, while Lopez is mom to twins Max and Emme, 16, whom she shares with  ex-husband Marc Anthony .

Lopez and Affleck sparked breakup rumors in May when the actor failed to accompany his wife to the Met Gala, where she served as co-chair.

Shortly after, the father of three ditched his wedding ring and moved out of their marital home in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Despite the split, the exes attempted to put on a united front by attending Seraphina’s school play together on May 17 as well as a movie event days later.

Jennifer Lopez and US actor Ben Affleck arrive for the premiere of "The Mother" at the Westwood Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, California, on May 10, 2023.

The “Selena” star was also present at Violet’s high school graduation party on May 30 and Samuel’s basketball game on June 2.

However, the former couple awkwardly avoided kissing each other on the lips when they met up for the sporting event.

The two noticeably spent the majority of June and July apart as Lopez jetted off to Italy and the Hamptons while Affleck stayed behind in LA .

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are seen on March 29, 2024 in New York City.

They continued to fuel split rumors in July when Affleck was absent from Lopez’s 55th birthday party celebrations and they spent their second wedding anniversary apart .

Sources previously told Page Six that Affleck had “come to his senses”  about his “fever dream” marriage to the mom of two.

The A-list couple was previously engaged in 2004 before reconciling in 2021 and eloping a year later in Las Vegas .

Jennifer Lopez is seen on April 26, 2024 in New York City.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

A cityscape of buildings and narrow streets that leads to a tall tower on a hill. Behind it is a large bay with small islands and boats.

By Shannon Sims

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

See San Francisco’s best-loved sights

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

An earlier version of this story included a photo caption that misstated the location of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. It is in Centro district, not Polanco. It also misstated the location of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The dunes are on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, not western.

Considering a trip, or just some armchair traveling here are some ideas..

52 Places:  Why do we travel? For food, culture, adventure, natural beauty? Our 2024 list has all those elements, and more .

Provincetown, Mass.:  Located at the tip of Cape Cod, P-town (as locals call it) has overlapping — and sometimes competing — identities : one of America’s oldest art colonies, nature preserve, thriving L.G.B.T.Q. resort and historic Portuguese fishing village.

Lake Como, Italy:  Stars like George Clooney frequent this scenic corner of northern Italy, but you might be surprised by how affordable it can be. Here’s an insider’s guide .

South of France:  Horses, bulls and birds of all types live among the pink marshes of the Camargue, a rugged landscape shaped  by the relentless push and pull of sea and river.

Disney Theme Parks:  As Disney has raised the cost of tickets and hotel rooms at its theme parks, and added pricey, difficult-to-navigate tools, even its most loyal fans are asking themselves  if they should rethink their vacations.

Helsinki, Finland:   Explore the stunning architecture  of the new central library, browse treasure-filled shops in the Design District, sweat in a wood-burning sauna, sip cocktails on a schooner and trek across islands in the surrounding archipelago.
