Nightlife in London

One of the most popular attractions of London, and the perfect way to spend an evening in the capital of England is to watch a West End show . If you’ve taken a spontaneous coach trip to London and haven’t booked your tickets yet, then do not fear – the official ticket box office at Leicester Square has a collection of West End tickets for some of London’s most popular shows at outrageously cheap prices, which you can buy on the day! We would highly recommend taking a stroll to Covent Garden and looking for a restaurant or brasserie to enjoy a pre-theatre dinner or a post-theatre cocktail. If you’re more of a night owl and want to experience the nightlife of a vibrant city, then London is the perfect destination for you! Head on over to Shoreditch and try one of ‘The Whistling Stop’s’ unique cocktails. If you would like to party all night and hit the dance floor then head down to ‘KOKO’ in Camden Town, or if you would like to party Ibiza style, then London is home to one of Europe’s largest ‘Pacha’ clubs. Whatever your taste in music, or cocktails, London has you sorted.

The best London bus tour is this Hop-On and Hop-Off bus tour .

Click here to check prices and availability.

The best London bus tour if you want the classic sightseeing experience is this Big Bus Hop-On and Hop-Off Bus Tour and the best bus tour in London if you want something a bit different is this Spooky London Ghost Vintage bus tour.

They both have hundreds of amazing reviews, so there’s no going wrong.

London is a massive city that can be much easier to explore by bus, and there are plenty of London bus tours that will cater to your specific interests, whether that be music history, architecture, filming locations in London , or something else entirely!

If you want to see what your other options are, here are the best London bus tours that are definitely worth your time.

PS – booking in advance is highly, highly recommended so you don’t miss out.

Easy Guide: Best London Bus Tour Picks

Best classic bus tours in london, 1. big bus hop-on hop-off classic london tour.

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 7,300+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  1-3 day pass | ✔️  BOOK NOW

Big Bus is the most iconic London bus tour and one of my favorite of the sightseeing tours that are hop-on/hop-off style.

Choose the red route if you have less time, or the blue route if you want to see more of London, and enjoy being whizzed around the city with information at each stop about what you’re looking at (the worst kind of bus tour is one where they don’t even tell you!).

Big Bus operate in multiple cities around the world, so the formula isn’t new in London, but it’s a tried-and-tested hop-on and hop-off tour, and that’s why it makes my list as the best one if you’re just going to do one bus tour in London.

2. Vintage London Bus Tour with Optional London Eye

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 370+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  3 hours 30 minutes | ✔️  BOOK NOW

bus trips to london

The difference between this bus tour and a normal sightseeing tour is that you get to travel in style on a vintage London bus, not one of the ugly themed hop-on and hop-off bus styles.

The London Eye can also be included in your sightseeing ticket, which is a fantastic way to cover both at once as you’ll finish at the London Eye and not waste any time in traveling there (because the bus will take you!).

This is not a hop-on and hop-off variation, so this is also great if you don’t really need to get on or off and just want to sit and enjoy the views.

3. London Tootbus Must-See Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

bus trips to london

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 3,500+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  1 hour 30 – 2 hours | ✔️  BOOK NOW!

Tootbus is newer on the scene in London when it comes to bus tours, but they’re doing amazing and have fantastic reviews and lots of repeat customers.

There are three different circuits to choose from to customize your London bus experience, and the upper deck is obviously the best place to sit (particularly when you’re going over the bridges!).

Tootbus is a great option for families with kids in London , as it has a little bit more of a casual vibe than the Big Bus options.

4. London Vintage Bus Tour with Thames Cruise

bus trips to london

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 170+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  4 hours | ✔️  BOOK NOW

Want to combine your London sightseeing bus tour with a Thames river cruise?

This is your best bet!

So many people want to do both during their time in London, and this is a great option for that, combining land and river for an epic sightseeing day out.

For the record, I prefer doing a sightseeing cruise with sightseeing bus in the warmer months, and a sightseeing bus with the London Eye (a previously listed tour – scroll up a bit) during the colder months just for comfort.

5. Golden Tours Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus

bus trips to london

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 600+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  1 day | ✔️  BOOK NOW

Golden Tours offer a hop-on and hop-off sightseeing tour around London that rivals the other big companies, and they are easy to spot with their blue and orange coloring.

I love that the front of the upper deck is covered in case the weather is bad, while the back of the top is open to the elements in case the sun is shining (or you just want to brave it!).

They do audio tours instead of live guides on their buses, so it’s better if you want that pre-recorded experience or have already tried Big Bus or Tootbus.

Best Night Bus Tours in London

6. london by night open top sightseeing tour.

bus trips to london

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 540+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  1 hour 30 minutes | ✔️  BOOK NOW

London is completely different at night , and even if you’ve done a London sightseeing tour during the daytime, a London bus tour at night is such a memorable experience that I recommend to all visitors.

This tour takes you all around the most iconic London attractions to see them lit up and sparkling in the dark, including the bright lights of the London Eye, the Tower of London , and the iconic Westminster Abbey.

You’ll get to see a side of the city that many people never see, and it can be a great thing to do on your first night in London to try and beat that jet lag.

7. London Christmas Lights at Night Bus Tour

⭐️  RATING:  4 out of 5 Stars, 130+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  1 hour 45 minutes | ✔️  BOOK NOW

bus trips to london

Deck the halls in London with a beautiful Christmas lights bus tour during the winter season.

There is something so insanely magical about London in winter when the Christmas lights are on, and this tour will take you right down some of the most important streets like Oxford Street and Regent’s Street.

The best part is that on the upper deck, you’ll be right under and right up close to the lights, as well as have a great vantage point to lights on the sides of the street lighting up the shops.

It’s a really wonderful tour to take in London in the winter if you’re visiting around the holiday season, and one I recommend to my friends and family often.

Best Music Bus Tours in London

8. rock music bohemian soho and north london tour.

⭐️  RATING:  5 of 5 Stars, 12+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  3.5 hours | ✔️  BOOK NOW

From Pink Floyd’s studio to the former home of Rod Stewart, the Rock Music Bohemian tour will take you through some of London’s most boho neighborhoods to let you into the world of rock music legends like The Clash, the Beatles, Sting, and so much more.

Listen to the music blasting from your bus as you tour around the city, perfectly timed with the stops, and enjoy this wonderful world of London rock music with an expert (and hilarious) guide.

9. London Rock Legends Bus Tour

⭐️  RATING:  4.5 out of 5 Stars, 350+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  3 hours 30 minutes | ✔️  BOOK NOW

bus trips to london

Another fantastic option for music fans, the London Rock Legends bus tour is a great choice if you’re wanting to see Notting Hill, Soho, Chelsea, and more – and if those don’t ring a bell to you, think: Ringo’s House, Jimmy Page’s house, and tons of Queen-related locations.

You’ll zip around the city with your guide and leave feeling like you’ve truly learned something new about the musical history of London – this tour is similar to the one mentioned above, so choose which one works best for your schedule.

10. A Ticket to Ride: Beatles in London Tour

⭐️  RATING:  4.6 out of 5 Stars, 170+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  2 hours 30 minutes | ✔️  BOOK NOW

Join the Beatles’ vibe on a chill evening bus tour through London, catching the city all lit up.

Routes and Timetable for London’s Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus Tour

There are 4 different routes which will take you to see London’s top landmarks. You can hop-on and hop-off of any of the routes as many times as  you like, and change routes whenever you want. This just makes sightseeing in London very easy, and it saves you having to use public transport in London to get from one place to another.

It’s also good to know that you can start your journey on the sightseeing bus tour at any bus stop, on any route, so you can start your journey at the bus stop that suits you best.

⇒ Here you will find a map with the routes and timetables: London Sightseeing Bus Tour Map .

1. Classic Red Tour

The first bus of this route departs at 8.10 am from the stop located just in front of Green Park underground station, on Piccadilly Street and there are buses approximately every 5 minutes. This route is the Classic Tour, a route that passes through 15 of the most important tourist places in London, including Westminster Abbey, London Eye, Big Ben, Covent Garden, the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral among others. The red route has a live commentary in English, and there are also recorded commentaries in several languages.

The red route takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and has several stops in common with the blue route: stops from 2 to 5, from 7 to 11 and stop 15. It also coincides with the green route at stop 9.

2. Big Blue Tour

The first bus of the blue route departs at 8.36 am from stop number 2, which is located at Hyde Park Corner, and there are buses approximately every 5 or 10 minutes. The nearest underground stop is Green Park. The blue route is a slightly longer route, and coincides in almost all the stops with the red route, but also goes round Hyde Park, passing through the South Kensington area, where the natural history museum, the science museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum are located. It also goes past Harrods and towards Regent’s Park stopping at Baker Street, where the Sherlock Holmes museum and Madame Tussauds wax museum are located. The blue route has recorded commentaries.

The blue route takes almost 3 hours and coincides with the red route at stops 2 to 5, from 7 to 11 and stop 15. It also connects with the green route at stop 9 .

3. Green Link

The green link is very short and connects the famous Trafalgar Square with King’s Cross and St Pancras underground and train stations, going past the British museum. If you are going to spend a day in London and arrive at the King’s Cross – St Pancras station, we recommend that you use the tourist bus, since you can start the route here, change at Trafalgar Square to another route and see London easily before returning to King’s Cross with the green link again if you need to.

The first bus on the green route leaves from Covent Garden at 8.20 am, where it also links to the blue and red routes.

4. Night tour: Hotel Return Service

The purple route is the hotel return service. It covers the areas from Marble Arch to Gloucester Road, so it’s ideal if your hotel is anywhere in between – such as Paddington, Bayswater, Notting Hill or Kensington. It runs up to 2 hours later than the other routes mentioned above.

Bus stops and timetables

Here you can find a list of the bus stops from the RED and BLUE routes, and the time of departure of the first bus at each one of them. After that, buses run every 5 – 10 minutes. Guide: Red Route ( RR ), Blue Route ( BR ) and Green Link ( GL ).

Visiting a city as vast as London is an exciting proposition, but it can also be a little bit daunting. Finding your way around somewhere with so many distinct districts and a sprawling transport network can be tricky – which is why we’ve put together this guide to getting around London. How do I pay for The Tube? How do London buses work? How do I get to the city from the airport? Whatever your London transport question, we’ve got the answer.

You can also tap using an Oyster card . This is a pre-payment card that you can buy from almost all Tube stations, and can be topped up during your trip either at physical Oyster machines or using the Oyster app. The card itself requires an initial deposit, but is returnable and refundable at the end of your stay. You may also want to look into Transport For London’s various travelcards, which offer unlimited travel for a set length of time – but they rarely work out much cheaper than just using the ‘pay as you go’ options. When planning a Tube journey, try to make the most of cheaper off-peak prices and avoid rush hour if you can, or your train might resemble a tin of sardines. And don’t forget the number one rule of Tube etiquette: when you’re on an escalator, stand on the right and walk on the left – otherwise you might be met with disapproving glances. If you’re still curious about The Tube, check out our guides to each line and its restaurants: Bakerloo , Central , Circle , District , Hammersmith & City , Jubilee , Metropolitan , Northern , Piccadilly , Victoria , Elizabeth and London Overground .

Here’s What to Do in London With Your Family, According to a Top Travel Advisor

Whether you’re a movie buff or an aspiring historian, the city of London has something to offer for every member of the family. Here's how one travel expert recommends you see the city.

How to Get Around London

  • For Culture Lovers

For Sports Enthusiasts

  • For Conscientious Travelers

For Foodie Families

For history lovers, for those craving a local experience.

Getty Images

Traveling in and of itself is a whole ordeal. Add your family to the mix, and planning the itinerary quickly becomes complicated as you try to find something for everyone to enjoy. Being prepared for the destination you're visiting is important — and that's where a travel advisor can come in handy.

Here's exactly what I, a professional travel advisor, would do on a trip to London with my family.

London can be cost-effective, with most of the city’s museums being free (exceptions include entry fees at some exhibitions). You can soak up the city’s atmosphere best by ditching the car and traveling on foot. Not only will you see more and spend less time in traffic, but you'll also benefit from the walk. Lastly, invest in a guide to help you make the most of your time; London is a big city, and an expert can ensure you get the best of it all.

For Culture Lovers

London has been the setting for many movies, including several that kids of all ages will know well. While in the city, immerse yourself in these famous films through custom experiences.

One option is to have Mary Poppins pop by the hotel to put on a performance for the entire family. She can conduct a sing-along and offer treats from her magic carpet bag. Fans of wizardry, meanwhile, may be interested in a Harry Potter tour that visits some of the film’s most iconic sites, including Platform 9 ¾ at King's Cross Station, the Ministry of Magic, or Diagon Alley. And for youngsters, NoteWorthy offers an exclusive experience at the filming locations of "Paddington." On the private tour, guests will go behind closed doors and explore the tunnels of the London Underground that Paddington famously trotted in.

NoteWorthy provides a variety of sports experiences. Polo lovers, for example, can meet with a top player from England in a private West Sussex club, followed by a lesson that teaches the basics of the game.

For Conscientious Travelers

Educate your children on how they can leave a long-lasting legacy on the destinations they visit. By giving donations and exploring historical attractions throughout the city, visitors ensure local and national monuments are maintained, developed, and preserved for future generations to enjoy. For example, NoteWorthy’s exclusive changing of the guards experience benefits The Guards Museum, which tells the story of the five regiments of foot guards from the 17th century to present day.

Visit one of the largest and oldest food markets in London, learn about its history, and taste samples from the various artisan stalls. Top stalls include Bath Soft Cheese, a family-owned operation, and Ginger Pig, a farm that offers an array of rare, native livestock, with an emphasis on animal welfare.

Or, take a trip to Fortnum & Mason — a department store that has held a Royal Warrant since 1910 — for a masterclass on how to create the traditional British Scotch egg.

Go beyond looking at artifacts in a museum and interact with them, too.

At NoteWorthy’s new exclusive experience at the Churchill War Rooms, you can step behind the scenes of Room 58. Marked on official maps as “special accommodation,” it's speculated this is where Churchill met his top advisors and members of the Secret Service.

Visit London’s finest Royal Warrant stores, where the royals shop. Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition for those who have supplied goods or services to the royal family. These special warrants are held by a wide range of organizations, from tailors and hat shops to chocolatiers and delicatessens.

The best way to see the city is to visit less-populated neighborhoods. Skip the West End’s busy museums and royal palaces and head north to Marylebone village to be immersed in local life as you walk the high street and picnic in nearby Regent's Park. Or, explore the charming neighborhood of Chelsea, known for its small boutiques, restaurants, and the annual Royal Horticultural Society’s Flower Show (best known as the Chelsea Flower Show).

London forced to introduce new bus route 'to help Jews feel safe when they travel' as antisemitism surges

A new bus route has been launched in London to “help Jews feel safe when they travel”, as antisemitism has surged across the capital following Hamas’ attack on Israel last year.

The freshly launched 310 bus runs between Stamford Hill in Hackney and Golders Green in Barnet, areas with two of the biggest Jewish communities in the city.

The new route, which operates from 7am to 7pm daily, was introduced by Sadiq Khan as part of a pledge he made during this May’s mayoral elections.

It is the first time the two areas have been linked by a direct bus service.

The mayor’s office said that it was launched following requests from Jewish organisations, who have campaigned for its existence for the past 16 years.

The service - which has cost £3.2million - will run for a trial period of “at least 12 months”, and passengers are being urged to provide feedback on the service via its consultation.

Single-deck diesel buses will be used and buses will run every 20 minutes.

The mayor said the new route “connects communities, connects congregations” and would reassure Jewish Londoners they would be “safe when they travel between these two communities”.

“We have heard stories of Jewish Londoners receiving verbal abuse,” he told the BBC.

Between October and July, the Met Police recorded 2,065 incidents of antisemitic hate crime - with 390 taking place in Barnet and 250 in Hackney.

Khan said: “I don't want any Londoner to be scared to leave their home because they're worried about public transport.

“I think we've got to recognise the fear that Londoners feel who are Jewish, we've got to recognise the tremors of hate that are felt by Jewish people across the country.

“We've got to be good allies to our Jewish friends and neighbours.”

Rabbi Dovid Lichtig, Chief Executive of the Interlink Foundation, said: "We welcome the introduction of the new 310 bus route, which will significantly enhance connectivity between our communities in Golders Green and Stamford Hill.

“We extend our appreciation to the TfL Commissioner and the Mayor of London for making this possible. This service is not just about providing earlier and more frequent buses; it's about bringing people together, improving access to essential services, and supporting sustainable travel options.”

Andrew Gilbert and Adrian Cohen, vice presidents of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: “In a period where our community is encountering unprecedented antisemitism, any measure that bolsters the confidence of Jewish individuals in using public transport is immensely valued.

“This is something we have been campaigning for over 15 years. Stamford Hill and Golders Green have always been centres of Jewish communal life in North London. A direct bus service connecting these hubs will provide substantial benefits to the community.”

The new 310 bus will follow the same routes as the 210 bus that links Brent Cross and Finsbury Park via Golders Green, Highgate village and Archway, and the 253 between Finsbury Park and Stamford Hill Broadway.

Passengers wait in the check-in area of Gatwick Airport as some flights are cancelled or delayed there and Heathrow

Flight delays have continued into a second day with Heathrow Airport now hit as well as Gatwick .

Recriminations have already started after a difficult day for passengers yesterday due to staffing problems with Air Traffic Control (ATC).

More than 100 flights were delayed or cancelled on a busy day for flights at the end of the school holidays, affecting thousands of passengers and leaving some stranded abroad.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary was so unhappy with it that he called for the head of ATC provider Nats to quit or be fired.

Meanwhile, heavy congestion is being felt on Britain’s motorways today as the nation begins another working week.

All lanes have closed on the M20 eastbound in Kent after animals running lose on the carriageway.

M20 closure after animals on the road

Lose animals are wreaking havoc on the M20 in Kent.

The motorways was forced to close eastbound between J1 Farningham and J3 (M26) after animals running wild on the carriageway.

Diversion were put in place after ‘animals on the road,’ National Highways said.

Tailbacks are reaching up to the A20 and M25, and normal traffic conditions are expected around 4pm.

We approached the emergency services for a comment.

Gatwick apologises for flight problems this weekend

bus trips to london

After a weekend of high profile problems with flight cancellations, a Gatwick spokeswoman said air traffic control company Nats has ‘successfully increased the number of air traffic controllers over recent months’.

She went on: ‘So far this year, London Gatwick has safely handled more than 170,000 flights through Nats, a 4% increase on last year.

‘The Nats service has been fully available more than 99.6% of the time, operating 24 hours a day.

‘London Gatwick typically has 800 or more flight movements a day from a single runway.

‘We will continue to work closely with the Nats leadership team to provide passengers and airlines with a good service.

‘London Gatwick would like to apologise to any passengers who experienced disruption yesterday.’

Last week saw three-fold increase in flight cancellations

New figures shows that there was a surge in cancelled flights last week, affecting 2% of all scheduled departures.

Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, saw the most cancellations with 165, followed by Gatwick (87) and London City (36).

Aviation analytics firm Cirium said a combination of poor weather and Air Traffic Control restrictions led to the issues.

A total of 427 departures from UK airports were cancelled, which was was a three-fold increase from the previous week.

Which flights are delayed today?

Gatwick Airport is still having ongoing problems with flights, with multiple flights cancelled this morning.

The 6.55am easyJet flight from Heraklion in Greece was cancelled, as was the 8.35am American Airlines flight from Tampa, Florida. Flights from Las Vegas, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Ibiza were also among those to come off the schedule. Meanwhile, multiple departures were also delayed.

It comes after a miserable weekend for British Airways passengers, with 240 flights cancelled between Friday and Sunday affecting 40,000 people, the Independent reports .

Problems continued for BA today with flights due to take off from Heathrow to Edinburgh, Marseille, Shanghai all cancelled, and incoming flights from Abu Dhabi, Edinburgh, Sydney and Marseille no longer going ahead.

Ryanair boss calls for Air Traffic Control head to step down after flights delayed at Gatwick

The CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, has called for the chief executive of air traffic control (ATC) provider Nats to resign.

Drama in the airline sector comes after thousands of passengers travelling through Gatwick Airport yesterday were affected by problems blamed on staff shortages.

Flights at the airport south of London have frequently been disrupted by ATC staffing issues and it seems Mr O’Leary has now had enough (or, more accurately, continues to have had enough, given this is not the first time he’s said this).

Hello, Due to short notice absence in the Air Traffic Control tower, temporary restrictions have been put in place today, in addition to existing restrictions in place due to adverse weather across the UK and Europe. These may result in some delays and cancellations. 1/2 — London Gatwick LGW (@Gatwick_Airport) September 8, 2024

He urged Martin Rolfe to step down and ‘allow someone competent’ to take over.

Nats is responsible for air traffic control at major UK airports including atwick, Heathrow, London City, Luton, and Manchester.

A spokesperson for Gatwick wrote on X yesterday: ‘Due to short notice absence in the Air Traffic Control tower, temporary restrictions have been put in place today, in addition to existing restrictions in place due to adverse weather across the UK and Europe. These may result in some delays and cancellations.’

Nats previously said it is ‘working in line’ with a staffing plan agreed with Gatwick bosses when it took over the provision of ATC services at the airport in October 2022, which includes training further controllers.

Mr O’Leary said: ‘UK Nats staff shortages caused multiple flight delays and cancellations at Gatwick Airport yesterday, Sunday September 8.

‘This is the latest in a long line of cock-ups by UK Nats, which has yet again disrupted multiple flights and thousands of passengers at Gatwick. Airlines and passengers deserve better.

‘Ryanair again calls on UK Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe to step down and allow someone competent to run an efficient UK ATC service, which airlines and passengers are entitled to expect.

‘If he won’t go, then (new Transport Secretary) Louise Haigh should sack him.’

He previously had hit out at Mr Rolfe over the widespread disruption at UK airports during last year’s August Bank Holiday Monday, which was caused by a Nats technical failure.

Nats and Gatwick have been approached for a comment.
