New procedure single permit

Since 01/01/2019 the double procedure of an application for a work permit and for a residence permit has been replaced by a single procedure for a unique permit. The visa has to be applied for through the VFS visa application center in New Delhi.

Belgium does not have a visa department in Nepal. For  short stay visa  (up to 90 days) C type - Schengen, Belgium is represented by the Embassy Switzerland in Kathmandu. All information regarding address, opening hours and other practical modalities are available on the visa page of their  website .

The representation regarding visa matters in Nepal by Switzerland applies only to C visa needed for the followings reasons:

  • Tourist visits
  • Visits to family or friends
  • Cultural or sports manifestations
  • Business trips
  • Short traineeships
  • Transit through the Schengen area

Short stay visa applications aiming to return to Belgium (e.g. when applicant’s Belgian residence card is lost or expired) or for a longer stay in Belgium (e.g. in view of marriage in Belgium) are not covered by the representation agreement and must therefore be lodged at the VFS visa application center in New Delhi. The handling fee for a short term stay visa (C) is 80 euro , except for children between 6 and 12 year old, which is 40 euro and for children up to 6 years, which is free .

For a long term stay visa (D) the handling fee is 180 euro .

An  additional contribution  is required for the processing of certain visa D applications.

The applicant must present  proof of full payment  of the fee at the time of application. If this evidence is not presented, the application is not admissible and it is not processed.

The fee will not be refunded if the application for a D visa or residence is refused.

According to the type of long stay visa (D visa) you require, you might have to present a medical certificate you can obtain via one of the doctors certified by the Embassy of Belgium. See below point 5 for details.

Official documents issued by public authorities (marriage, birth, and death certificates, or diplomas, police clearance certificates and affidavits) have to be legalized before the submission in a visa file. Click here for all details on  legalizations .

If those documents are not directly written in English, they have to be translated by a sworn translator in one of the Belgian national language. Click here for all details on  translations .  

Belgian embassies and consulates general must submit certain visa applications to the Immigration Office of the Federal Public Service Home Affairs for a final decision. It is the only competent authority with regards to the admittance, stay, residence and removal of foreigners from Belgian territory.

In such a case, your file number will be communicated to you by the embassy or consulate general upon the submission of your file to the Immigration Office. From this stage onwards, the Immigration Office is the only authority to contact, if you wish to know the status of your application.

With the file number you can inquire about the status of your application (Boulevard Pacheco 44, 1000 Brussels, T: +32.2.793.80.00,  [email protected] ). Using this number, you can also check the status of your visa application on the  Immigration Office website .

Once a decision has been taken, the Embassy or Honorary Consulate of Belgium will inform you personally.

If you’re employed you have to provide your last 3 months payslips and a letter from your employer (original) confirming your employment start date, job title and annual salary. The letter must include the company registration number, address, contact details and position of the signatory. If you’re a student you have to provide a letter from your school/university (original) confirming your student status, type of studies, number of lessons (in hours) per week and attendance record If you’re self-employed you have to provide an accountant letter and your latest tax return If you’re unemployed and receiving benefits you have to provide a recent letter from the Jobcentre If you’re retired you have to provide a recent letter from DWP

Immigration Offices, under Department of Immigration have been facilitating tourists flying to Nepal by providing Visa on Arrival. 'On Arrival' visa procedure is very quick and simple. You can expect some queues during peak Tourist season. If you wish to skip those queues, you can also consider getting Visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed abroad prior to your arrival. Choice is yours.

 If you have obtained visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions, then you must enter Nepal within six months from the visa issued date. Your total stay is counted starting from the day you enter into Nepal.

Visas obtained on Arrival at the Entry and Exit points are 'Tourist Visas'.  They bear multiple Re entry facility. Tourist Visa 'On Arrival' is the only entry visa to Nepal. If you are visiting Nepal for the purposes other than Tourism (sightseeing, tour, travel, mountaineering, trekking, visiting friends and families), you should still get ' Tourist Visa' to get into the country.  However, you must change the category of visa as per your purpose and length of stay in Nepal from Department of Immigration by producing required documents.

Nationals of following countries are requested to acquire Visa prior their arrival from their nearby Diplomatic missions (Embassies/consulates) of Nepal Government.  

  • Afghanistan
  • Refugees with travel document

Please follow these simple procedures for Tourist Visa on Arrival at the airport (TIA)  if you have not acquired Visa prior to boarding the plane.

  • Fill in ' Arrival Card '
  • Fill in Online ‘Tourist Visa ‘form ( you can fill it up  prior to your arrival  visiting our official website   Department of Immigration  / fill it up using Kiosk machines upon your arrival at the airport).  If you fill it from the website, you will get submission Receipt with barcode, please print it out and bring it along for acquiring visa. It works for fifteen days and becomes invalid then after.  If so, you will have to fill it up again.
  • Make payment  at the bank according to your visa requirement ( 15/30/90 Days)
  • Get the receipt

While you can use different modes of payments (at visa fees collection counter), we advise you to carry some cash to be on the safe side.

On Arrival Visa Fee at Entry Points

15 Days – 30 USD

30 Days – 50 USD

90 Days – 125 USD

  • Proceed to the Immigration Desk with your online form,  payment receipts and your passport
  • Hand in your documents to immigration officer for visa processing. He/she issues visa to you upon his/her satisfaction.

Visa Extension Fee 

  • Tourist visa extension is done for minimum 15 days with USD 45 and USD 3 per day for additional days.
  • In the case of delay less than 150 days additional USD 5 per day as late fine.

Gratis Visa (Visa for Free)

Gratis Visa is issued free of cost in case of following categories of Visa applicants:

  • Children below 10 years except US citizens
  • Up to 30 days for SAARC Citizen (except Afghanistan) visiting Nepal for the first time in a given visa Year.  Afghan citizen are eligible for Gratis Visa on Arrival only upon the recommendation of Department of Immigration. If you are an Afghan citizen, you can request concerned institution inviting you to Nepal for necessary paperwork with Department of Immigration to get you Gratis Visa 'On Arrival'.
  • Non Residential Nepalese(NRN) card holder ( issued by MoFA /Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad)
  • Chinese Nationals for 150 days

Visas of all kinds including ‘Gratis’ issued at the Airport are Tourist Visas. Contact Department of Immigration for extending your visa or changing the category of your visa. Tourist Visa extension can be done from Immigration Office, Pokhara too. Non tourist visa extension can be done only at Department of Immigration (if eligible) for a period of maximum one year (except business visa).

Official visa

When applying for an official Visa to Nepal, applicants should fill up the online visa application form available at the following portal:

All the personal details to be filled and the required documents to be submitted for the visa are clearly indicated in the above-mentioned portal.

A confirmation slip will be generated at the end of the online application process.

An official visa shall be issued to a person holding an official/ordinary passport who needs to visit Nepal in connection with his/her official duty. Official visa is also issued to the family members of such person when they are accompanying the person.

The official visa shall be issued by the Embassy for a period of 30 days on the basis of reciprocity. The term thereof may be extended, if required, from the Department of Consular Services, Kathmandu for the remaining term of the official assignment in Nepal.

Required Documents for An Official Visa: 1. Original official/ordinary passport with at least 6 months’ validity. 2. One recent passport-size photograph 3. A confirmation slip generated from the online visa application portal 4. A note verbale from the Foreign Ministry/diplomatic mission/ international organisation or equivalent offices with a request for an official visa, stating clearly the purpose and period of the visit.

Note: Applicants visiting the Embassy without filling up the online visa application form will not be entertained.
