Experts say travel insurance is crucial: Here's how it actually works

ahi travel company

Whether you're a frequent traveler or setting plans for an upcoming vacation, unexpected circumstances such as bad weather can cast a cloud over a trip, which is why experts suggest investing in travel insurance.

Recently, Hurricane Beryl marked an "early and violent start" to the typical storm season. NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad confirmed in a mid-season update earlier this month that Beryl was "the earliest category-5 Atlantic hurricane on record" -- and peak storm season is right around the corner.

With increased risk of disruptions during hurricane season through November and more people opting for shoulder season getaways after avoiding summer crowds , travelers should prepare for such worse-case scenarios to avoid losing money on hotels, activities and other bookings.

Everything you need to know about travel insurance

ahi travel company

With an array of options in the market and various individual reasons to invest in a plan that protects your purchases, "Good Morning America" tapped top industry experts to provide insights to help ensure that even if your next getaway gets rained out, your bank account won't be drained as well.

"Things can go wrong in ways that you can't begin to imagine. And if you're unlucky and unfortunate enough to be in that position, you don't want to come back from your trip with a debt to pay off as well," Daniel Green, trip insurance expert and co-founder of Faye Travel Insurance, told "GMA."

Understand the basics before you buy bespoke coverage

Katy Nastro, spokesperson for Going.com, formerly known as Scott's Cheap Flights, told "GMA" that first and foremost, folks need to "understand all the ways in which you are already protected before dishing out for things you don't need."

ahi travel company

"When it comes to flight insurance, under federal law, you are already protected to get a full refund or rebooked on a significantly delayed flight or cancellation, regardless of the reason," she said. "With new regulations that airlines must comply with by the end of October, seeing your refund back to your payment method will get a lot faster and more seamless."

Nastro said "many travel credit cards already have built-in trip insurance that can protect you when the unexpected happens," citing perks from the Chase Sapphire Reserve card that provide "reimbursements up to $10,000 per person for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses when an interruption happens."

You should always buy insurance for one simple reason -- when you start thinking -- 'I hope we have insurance,' it's one minute too late

"These cards often pay sooner than the airlines do for expenses due to misplaced bags," she added.

Nastro also suggested to check on coverage across state lines with any existing medical or car insurance policies, which could help cut down on costs.

"Specifically, when it comes to medical insurance, medical care around the world is generally a fraction of the cost compared to what it is in the U.S. So, while it could be good to have if you need stitches in Vietnam, it probably won't break the bank," she said.

Because travel insurance is subjective, Nastro said "it's worth considering when you exhaust your existing coverages to see where you might have some gaps."

How does travel insurance work and what's actually covered?

"A great example is when you have a trip with multiple components that aren't purchased together, like a flight and cruise," Nastro told "GMA." "The cruise won't wait when your flight has been rebooked for the next day, so in this scenario, it might be worth looking at insurance on the cruise portion. You can typically add insurance after the fact, but reading the fine print is critical."

"Trip or travel insurance tends to be cheaper to buy, but is restricted to what is actually covered and often has red tape in terms of getting that reimbursement. For example, if you have an illness and need to cancel your trip, policies might require a doctor's note," she continued.

She added, "Travel insurance with 'cancel for any reason' policies tends to be more expensive to purchase, but more inclusive in terms of what is considered a 'covered' reason. The biggest caveat is that they offer a partial refund -- 50% to 75% of nonrefundable expenses."

When it comes to weather, she reiterated that reading the fine print is critical, because "the coverage typically offered is for extreme weather and scenarios where the operator cannot operate for 24 hours or more, so a typical summer thunderstorm won't make the cut."

ahi travel company

Green added that, generally, if a customer buys travel insurance from an airline provider, since the carrier "doesn't know all the details of your trip" beyond the price and date of the flight, "if you're renting a car and traveling around -- or staying in a $4,000 hotel, you might only have $1,000 worth of insurance because at the checkout screen of American or United or Delta, they just didn't know about those costs."

"That's why I think it makes a lot more sense to buy insurance directly from either a website portal or an agent that can show you the main limits, so you know all the things you spent are covered as part of the policy," he said.

As Nastro pointed out, payment for claims can become a sticky situation, which is why Green helped craft an more seamless way to alleviate issues by providing the reassurance of immediate reimbursement: "If you have Apple Pay or Google Pay, you can access that money instantly after the claim is settled," he told "GMA."

Green co-founded Faye just before the COVID-19 pandemic sent the travel industry into a tailspin, but said now, "the concern on the American mind more than anything is who's gonna pay for this? Especially in these days of inflation, if you're paying significant amounts of money for travel, and something goes wrong, you'd like to at least be made whole."

3 categories to consider for travel insurance coverage

ahi travel company

Green explained that travel insurance can generally be broken into three categories: your investment in the trip, your belongings such as luggage and passports, and your health.

For anyone booking travel on their own, without a travel agent or adviser, Green highlighted the difference between buying travel insurance directly versus clicking "yes" on an app or checkout screen.

"You're not always being offered insurance that's in your best interest if you're just hoping that whatever your credit card comes with, or whatever your airline gives you at the end of the checkout is going to provide everything you need," he said.

He noted that one important tip for any type of travel coverage purchase is "the earlier you tell your insurance company that something has gone wrong, the more likely it is that they can help you while you're on your trip -- and helping sometimes means paying for expenses so that you don't have to be out of pocket and get reimbursement."

Weather-specific products for travel inconveniences

Products like Sensible Weather offer more specific elements to cover scenarios such as rain during a beach vacation or lack of snow for a ski trip, which may derail plans.

"The idea of travel inconvenience payments, it just takes the sting out of things," Green said. "In those scenarios, you just get a fixed, agreed amount of money -- sort of no questions asked -- You just have to prove that you actually experienced the loss in question, and then you get the full amount."

ahi travel company

"You should always buy insurance for one simple reason -- because usually at the point when you start thinking to yourself, 'Wow, I hope we have insurance,' it's one minute too late," Green said. "Hurricane season is the perfect example of that. Once a hurricane is named, you generally can't make any claims related to the hurricane if you didn't already buy a policy."

"What we're learning about the current hurricane season is the weather is becoming unpredictable all the time," Green said. "We've heard about days where the weather was so hot in Phoenix that airplanes couldn't take off from the tarmac, hurricanes coming sooner than expected, or power failures causing an airport to not be able to operate -- and because those things are so unpredictable, playing the game of wait and see before buying your insurance rarely make sense versus justbuying it around the time you buy your trip and not having to worry about that aspect again."

How much plans cost and limitations

"There is no one size fits all when it comes to travel insurance," Green noted.

However, he said "there are rules of thumb" that industry experts often follow: "You should be willing to spend up to 10% of the cost of your trip on your insurance."

"The two biggest factors that usually affect the cost of your insurance is your age at the time of purchase, not at the time of travel, and the value of your trip," he said, adding that "every company is different."

Best Travel Insurance Companies

The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage options for a wide range of people and needs. For this guide, we looked at coverage options, customizability, and the best companies for specific situations, such as pre-existing conditions.

Here are Business Insider's picks for the best travel insurance companies in 2024.

Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is of the largest players in the travel insurance space, offering nearly endless options for any customer on the travel spectrum, including annual travel insurance plans which can offer frequent travelers the flexibility to "set it and forget it" on their travel insurance coverage.

Nationwide Essential also offers some of the most affordable policies in the market compared to similar plans from competitors, which makes it a great pick for just about anyone. Buyers can discuss bundling options as Nationwide also sells homeowners, auto, pet, and other insurance products. Its travel insurance quoting is just as easy as it has been with other Nationwide insurance products.

AXA Assistance USA

AXA offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

Travel Guard

AIG is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

C&F Travel Insured

While every travel insurance company has negative reviews about its claims process, C&F Travel Insured 's claims process has a consistent stream of positive reviews. One customer wrote that C&F processed a claim within 48 hours. Additionally, C&F regularly responds to customer reviews within one business week, making reviews a consistent way to reach the company.

Additionally, in C&F's fine print, it mentions that any claims that take more than 30 days to pay out will begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

C&F's reputation isn't the only thing to speak highly of. It offers an array of add-ons uncommon in the travel insurance industry, such as Interruption for Any Reason insurance and CFAR coverage for annual plans. C&F also offers discounts for children on its Protector Edge plan and free coverage on its Protector plan.

Read our C&F Travel Insured review .

Tin Leg Travel Insurance

Tin Leg is a great fit for travelers with medical issues in particular. Seven of Tin Leg's eight travel plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment.

Thanks to coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as well as for potential COVID-19 infection while traveling, this company offers some of the best financial investment options for travelers who are or will be exposed to higher health risks and issues.

Read our Tin Leg travel insurance review .

WorldTrips Travel Insurance

WorldTrips has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

Read our WorldTrips travel insurance review .

Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick offers low premiums across its five plans, most of which offer coverage for pre-existing conditions. You'll find robust medical travel insurance that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company also offers high medical evacuation coverage limits, up to $1,000,000.

Read our Trawick travel insurance review .

Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Read our Travelex Travel Insurance review .

World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads distinguishes itself from others by covering over 300 sports and activities, from skydiving to golf. Additionally, its one of the few travel insurance companies that allow you to purchase after departing for your destination. However, you'll have a 72-hour waiting period before coverage kicks in.

That said, World Nomads doesn't have the highest coverage limits compared to its competitors on this list, travel medical insurance capping out at $100,000. It also isn't the most flexible provider, only providing two plans to choose from with no options for pre-existing condition coverage. Yet, World Nomads still stands out for its sports coverage and post-departure coverage.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

For example, to get coverage for a canceled trip due to work, many travel insurance companies require that you've been with that company for at least a year.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy — what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared. At the very least, you should have the terms readily available while you're on your trip.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Your insurance company may even have a 24/7 assistance hotline that can walk you through an emergency during your trip, even issues that don't involve claims.

When a problem arises. you'll want to document as much as possible, in case you need proof when filing a claim. Ask for receipts and invoices when possible.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, Business Insider evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read more about how Business Insider rates travel insurance  for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't one best travel insurance company; there are many great providers on the travel insurance market today. Our overall winner was Nationwide for its breadth of coverage options. AIG Travel Guard, AXA, Berkshire Hathaway, Tin Leg, WorldTrips and Trawick also made the cut. The best pick for you will depend on what features you value the most, like a low premium or high coverage limits.

While coverage varies by policy, common exclusions often include pre-existing medical conditions (unless you have purchased a waiver), accidents caused by high-risk activities if not specifically covered (e.g., skydiving, scuba diving), travel for medical procedures, and events known before purchasing the policy (e.g., traveling during a pandemic). Always read your policy carefully to understand the exclusions.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

The right amount of travel insurance depends on your trip, but $100,000 should be sufficient for most travel plans. You may want more coverage for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Ukraine war latest: Putin planning visit to member country of court seeking his arrest

Vladimir Putin will visit Mongolia next week, the Kremlin has announced. The country is a member of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president last year for the alleged unlawful deportation and transfer of children.

  • Reporting by Mark Wyatt

Ukraine says it has shot down 12 out of 18 Russian drones launched into the country during an overnight attack.

Kyiv's air force said on Telegram that Russia also used an Iskander-M ballistic missile during the attack, fired from Crimea.

It added that four of the drones used by Russia were lost and fell independently.

At least three people were injured yesterday in a Russian "double-tap" attack in the northeastern Sumy region of Ukraine, according to officials.

According to the region's military administration, a 38-year-old man was injured after a Russian drone strike in Seredyna-Buda.

While emergency services were on the scene, the site was hit by a second strike, injuring a police officer and a 57-year-old civilian, the report added.

The situation in the Sumy region has become more tense since the start of Ukraine's invasion into Russia's Kursk region, which borders Sumy.

Vladimir Putin plans to visit Mongolia next week, the Kremlin has announced.

Mongolia is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president in March 2023 for the alleged unlawful deportation and transfer of children.

Mr Putin will visit the country "at the invitation Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh", the Kremlin said.

It will be his first visit to an ICC member country that has ratified the Rome Statute - an agreement that calls on all members to arrest Mr Putin if he enters their territory.

The ICC does not have any enforcement mechanism, while the Kremlin has repeatedly said it does not recognise its jurisdiction.

The leaders will celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Battles of Khalknin Gol, in which Soviet and Mongolian forces jointly defeated Japanese troops.

For context: Mongolia has refrained from supporting Russia's war in Ukraine but has not condemned it at the United Nations.

The country also has a large economic dependence on Russian fuel.

Welcome back to our coverage of the Ukraine-Russia war.

Yesterday, the situation grew more intense in the key Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, where Kyiv's top commander says fighting is "exceptionally tough".

Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would not forgive Russia "for a single destroyed Ukrainian life" as the country marked the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine.

And earlier in the day, a US defence official said that an F-16 fighter jet donated to Ukraine was destroyed in a crash on Monday that killed the pilot. The cause has not yet been determined.

Here are the other key lines from the past 24 hours:

  • A fighter jet from Belarus attempted to shoot down a Russian drone that flew into the country's airspace this morning;
  • Russia's huge air attacks across Ukraine this week cost Moscow more than £1bn, the UK representative to the UN said;
  • Ukraine said it was keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis tomorrow, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today:

  • Ukrainian shelling in Russia's Belgorod region killed one person and injured others, according to officials;
  • Ukraine said it was keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days;
  • Ukraine's top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said fighting in Pokrovsk is "exceptionally tough";
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would not forgive Russia "for a single destroyed Ukrainian life" as the country marked the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine.

A military court in Moscow has placed Pavel Popov, a former deputy defence minister, in detention on suspicion of fraud in the latest of a string of corruption probes of officials tied to ex-defence minister Sergei Shoigu.

The case against Popov, who has served in his role since 2013, is the third investigation into a senior defence official relating to construction work at Patriot Park - a military theme park near Moscow.

The war-themed tourist attraction near Moscow displays a vast collection of Russian and Soviet weaponry and offers visitors the chance to clamber on tanks and take part in combat simulations.

Investigators said Popov, beginning in 2021, had diverted various building materials from the park to his own country house for installation work.

Popov has been detained until 29 October.

He denies guilt, his lawyer told the RIA state news agency.

Popov joins at least a dozen officials who, since April, have been caught up in the biggest wave of corruption scandals to hit the Russian military and defence establishment in years.

In May, soon after the first arrests, Vladimir Putin unexpectedly removed Mr Shoigu as defence minister and replaced him with Andrei Belousov in what was widely seen as a move to ensure tighter management of Russia's vast defence budget.

Russian political commentators said the investigation into Popov was clearly linked to a broader anti-graft crackdown undertaken by Belousov against those with ties to Mr Shoigu.

A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was destroyed in a crash on Monday, a US defence official has said.

According to the official, the cause has not yet been determined - pilot error or mechanical failure.

It comes after Russia staged a missile and drone attack on Ukraine on Monday.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that F-16 jets were used to repel the attack on Monday and showed good results.

He had announced earlier this month that Ukraine had started flying F-16s for operations within the country, confirming the long-awaited arrival of the US-made fighter jets which Ukraine has been pushing for since the start of the war.

Four nuclear power units at two different power plants in Ukraine were disconnected from the grid during the Russian attack on Monday, Ukraine's presidential office head, Andriy Yermak, reports.

In a statement on Telegram , Mr Yermak said power units at Rivne NPP, in northwest Ukraine, and South Ukrainian NPP in the south, had been disconnected.

What happened on Monday?

Russian forces unleashed 236 drones and missiles in a massive attack on Ukraine.

Seven people were killed and 15 regions were struck, with explosions heard in the capital, Kyiv.

Ukraine said hypersonic missiles were used in the assault.

Fighting in Pokrovsk is "exceptionally tough", Ukraine's top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi has said.

Mr Syrskyi, who has spent several days on the eastern front, also said that Russia was throwing everything it could into its assaults, trying to break through Ukrainian defences.

"Fighting is exceptionally tough," he said, adding that Ukraine had to constantly use unorthodox methods to strengthen its positions.

For context : Russia's army is closing in on Pokrovsk, a critical logistics hub for the Ukrainian defence in the area.

The region, which had a pre-war population of about 60,000, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds.

Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes and would bring Russia closer to its stated aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

Ukraine says it's keeping a close eye on its border with Belarus after a build-up of troops there in recent days.

Kyiv's foreign ministry accused Minsk last week of concentrating a "significant number of personnel" in the Gomel region near Ukraine's northern border "under the guise of exercises".

It swiftly warned Belarusian officials not to make "tragic mistakes under Moscow's pressure" and withdraw its forces.

The Institute for the Study of War said Belarus's troop deployment was likely intended to divert Ukrainian soldiers from other fronts.

It also assessed that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko was "extremely unlikely to risk combat with Ukraine that could weaken his regime".

Speaking on television today, a spokesperson for Ukraine's border guard service said it had detected no immediate threats on the border, but that Ukrainian troops were keeping it constantly monitored.

"This is tens of kilometres from our border, at different points – different distances," said Andriy Demchenko.

"What is happening on the territory of Belarus is actively monitored by intelligence units, the ministry of defence and the state border service in order to understand how the situation is changing, how threatening it can be for Ukraine.

"So that all components of our defence forces, which strengthen this direction, have the opportunity to react in time to any actions."

Our Thoughts on AAA Travel Insurance

AAA partners with Allianz to offer travel insurance plans to club and non-club members. Based on our rating system and travel insurance methodology , Allianz earned 4.1 out of 5 stars . During our research, we found that Allianz offers limited plan options through AAA compared to its usual — for example, only two plans are available through the AAA Auto Club Group, which services 14 U.S. states.

However, other AAA clubs may provide different Allianz policies depending on your geographic location, making it hard to fully assess the travel insurance offerings across the company’s 32 clubs nationwide . In addition, our calculations show that the average cost of an Allianz policy is almost 23% more than the average cost of travel insurance. Based on this research, we recommend considering other providers in your search for the best travel insurance.

Pros and Cons

Offers exclusive coverage plans through Allianz Global Assistance

Provides car rental damage coverage as an add-on

Both AAA members and non-members can purchase coverage

Offers a pre-existing medical conditions waiver

Plans have low medical coverage limits, based on our research

Coverage may vary depending on your state’s AAA club

Lacks an option to add cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage

How AAA Travel Insurance Scored in Our Methodology

Since AAA offers travel insurance through Allianz, our team analyzed Allianz for this review. Using our travel insurance methodology, we gave Allianz 4.1 out of 5 stars . It earned perfect scores in our coverage details and customer service and reviews categories but lost points for not offering CFAR coverage.

For transparency, note that our scores reflect Allianz as a general company — not the plans offered explicitly through AAA. According to our research, each AAA club’s policy offerings may differ from the plans typically provided by Allianz.

 AAA Travel Insurance

Rating is based off of MarketWatch Methodology Guidelines

Compare AAA Travel Insurance to the Competition

Compare AAA travel insurance through Allianz to other providers we’ve rated and reviewed using the table below.

AAA Travel Insurance vs. Faye

AAA travel insurance and Faye have several similarities between comparable plans. Allianz’s TripProtect Deluxe and Faye’s Travel Protection plans offer 100% trip cancellation and 150% trip interruption benefits. These plans also offer $2,000 in lost baggage coverage .

However, Allianz’s plan has the upper edge regarding emergency evacuation limits and baggage delay coverage. On the other hand, Faye offers more travel medical expense coverage and trip delay benefits. While both have similar average costs, the plans cost more than the average travel insurance policy, which we found is $221 across 20 different providers.

Learn more in our Faye Travel Insurance Review .

AAA Travel Insurance vs. Travelex

AAA travel insurance and Travelex have few similarities when comparing Allianz’s TripProtect Deluxe plan and Travelex’s Travel Select policy. Both offer the same trip cancellation and trip interruption limits. Travelex offers higher trip delay coverage. Otherwise, Allianz’s plan provides higher coverage limits for everything else, including medical expenses, emergency evacuations , and lost or delayed baggage.

Another difference worth noting is the average cost of these plans. Travelex is, on average, 23% more expensive than Allianz. If you don’t mind sacrificing higher coverage limits for a cheaper overall cost, Travelex’s plan may be worth considering over Allianz’s.

What Does AAA Travel Insurance Cover?

AAA partners with Allianz to offer various travel insurance policies to club members in certain states across the country. However, plan offerings and coverage will likely vary by AAA club. We took a closer look at Allianz-backed plans available to AAA Auto Club Group members, which includes members in states such as Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina and more.

Based on the plans AAA provided us, an Allianz-backed plan includes coverages such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage coverage, emergency medical and emergency transportation. In addition, plans cover trips lasting up to 180 days and offer a 15-day review period. Learn more about these two plans in the sections below.

AAA Travel Insurance Policy Options

AAA offers two plans in partnership with Allianz travel insurance, known as TripProtect Select and TripProtect Deluxe. Based on our experience, getting a quote through the AAA Auto Club Group was straightforward. To access quotes, you only need to provide your state of residence, total trip cost, departure and return dates, initial deposit date and age.

Our research found that TripProtect Deluxe offers the same coverage but with higher limits than the TripProtect Select plan. Coverages include trip cancellation , trip interruption, baggage delay, emergency transportation, emergency medical, trip change protector and more. Perks that come with both plans include 24-hour hotline assistance and concierge services. If you qualify, you can also apply for a pre-existing health condition waiver for both TripProtect Select and Deluxe. However, this waiver limits your total trip cancellation and interruption benefits.

During the purchasing process, AAA informed us we may be eligible for financial default coverage if we used a qualifying travel supplier, which would offer reimbursement if the supplier went out of business and impacted the trip. However, this benefit may differ depending on the AAA club for your location. Find a direct comparison between Allianz’s TripProtect Select and Deluxe in the table below.

After gathering policy quotes through AAA using seven unique traveler profiles, we found that the average cost of the TripProtect Select plan was $235 and a Deluxe plan cost $306.

AAA Travel Insurance Optional Add-on Coverage

Based on our research into Allianz plans through AAA’s Auto Club Group, only one optional add-on coverage is available to club members — Rental Car Damage Protector. Available for purchase with both the TripProtect Select and Deluxe plans, this add-on can protect domestic and overseas rental cars with up to $50,000 in coverage for collision, loss and damages.

Rental Car Damage Protector also includes 24-hour emergency hotline assistance alongside trip interruption and baggage loss benefits. Note that Allianz offers this add-on for a flat rate of $11 per day .

How Much Does AAA Travel Insurance Cost?

Our team gathered quotes through AAA Auto Club Group’s partnership with Allianz to learn more about the average cost of a policy. From this research, we found the average cost of a policy is $271 . This is almost 23% more than the average cost of travel insurance we calculated using quotes from 20 different providers.

Your exact policy costs will vary based on factors such as your age, destination, total trip cost and more. With AAA plans backed by Allianz, we found that naming your destination was optional when obtaining quotes. However, our research has found that most other providers consider your destination when calculating your quote.

See the table below for a breakdown of costs for a TripProtect Select and TripProtect Deluxe plan from Allianz through AAA. The costs are outlined for seven of our sample traveler profiles, which we used when weighing the cost rating factor in our methodology .

Based on quotes our team gathered from 20 different providers using the seven unique traveler profiles above, we found the average cost of a travel insurance plan is $221. Comparatively, an AAA travel insurance plan, administered by Allianz, costs $271.

Does AAA Offer 24/7 Travel Assistance?

According to our research, AAA offers 24/7 travel assistance services through Allianz for each travel insurance policy. However, exact offerings may vary by AAA club and the exact plan. Travel assistance staff is multilingual, according to Allianz, and can help assist you with flights, accommodations, destination information, emergency language translation, legal referrals, prescription replacement, lost baggage and more. Note that you’re responsible for costs associated with any of the services offered.

AAA also offers concierge services through its Allianz-backed plans. The concierge can help with event planning, business services, specialty services — such as flower delivery and personal care referrals — and more.

How To Buy a Policy From AAA Travel Insurance

Our research team obtained travel insurance quotes through AAA and its partner, Allianz, to better understand how the quote and purchasing process works. In our experience, it is not easy to access any portal other than the one designated for your location. Some locations, such as California, have multiple AAA clubs associated with the state. For this article, we went through AAA Auto Club Group, which serves 14 states and Puerto Rico, to gather quotes for an Allianz plan.

Quote screen for AAA travel insurance protection, provided by Allianz

Starting the quote process through the Auto Club Group portal is relatively simple. To gain access to quotes, you provide your state of residence, total trip cost, departure and return dates, initial deposit date and traveler ages. You can choose to enter your destination, but our quotes were the same with or without this information.

From here, AAA will take you to a page that provides information on Allianz’s plans. We felt the information could have been more detailed to help us better understand what we’d receive with each plan. For example, some standard coverages — such as vehicle return and trip change protector — would have benefitted from an explanation of what precisely this coverage is. Browsing through plan details, which seemed to be a sort of sample contract, didn’t provide us with much clarity.

AAA Travel Insurance plan options: TripProtect Deluxe II, TripProtect Select II, and Rental Car Damage Protector.

Once you choose the plan you’d like, AAA directs you to fill in additional trip and travel information. If you’re purchasing a plan through AAA Auto Club Group, the company will ask for personal information such as your address, email, phone number and more. You’ll need to provide your flight information, if applicable, so Allianz can proactively assist you if you experience a flight delay. Once you’ve entered payment information, you can finalize your purchase. While our research team wishes that AAA provided more details on each coverage, we found the purchasing process easy overall.

AAA Travel Insurance Customer Reviews

Because Allianz is the policy administrator for plans through AAA, we examined its customer ratings and reviews on third-party platforms to better understand what consumers like and dislike about the company. At the time of writing, Allianz has a 4.3 out of 5 star rating on Trustpilot and a 3.5 out of 5 star rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Learn more about what we found from customer reviews below.

What Customers Like

  • Easy claims filing: Several policyholders noted that filing a claim was an easy and quick process, noting that they appreciated how it was a fully online process.
  • Fast claims processing: Many reviewers, such as this one , spoke of how quickly and efficiently Allianz handled their claims.
  • Helpful customer service agents: Customers such as this reviewer noted how friendly Allianz’s customer representatives were and how quickly they resolved any issues.

What Customers Don’t Like

  • Drawn-out claims: We found multiple reviewers, such as this one , expressing frustration over the time it took to resolve their claim, even with full proof and receipts.
  • Documentation requests: Several reviewers, such as this policyholder , were frustrated with the amount of documentation requested for their claim.

We reached out to AAA for comment on the negative customer reviews associated with Allianz but did not receive a response.

How To File a Claim with AAA Travel Insurance

Filing a claim with a AAA travel insurance policy requires going through Allianz, the plan provider and administrator. You can file a claim with Allianz through the claims portal on its website or by using its TravelSmart app, which is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. If you’d prefer a customer representative to help walk you through the claims process, Allianz’s customer service number is easily accessible on its website.

Note that you’ll need supporting documentation for your claim. Allianz provides an online document checklist that helps you see what you need for your specific claim. Once you’ve filed your claim, you can monitor its status through the provider’s app or online.

Is AAA Travel Insurance Worth It?

Whether or not a AAA travel insurance policy through Allianz is worth it is up to you. Our research shows that the AAA Auto Club Group offers comprehensive travel insurance coverage for travel and medical emergencies abroad. We also like that you don’t need a AAA membership to purchase a plan. However, we found only two travel insurance options to choose from, and costs were higher than the average price of a general travel policy calculated by our research team. In addition, your Allianz plan options may vary based on the AAA club tied to your geographic location.

For best practice when choosing a travel insurance plan, we encourage you to get quotes from multiple providers, compare costs and coverage details, and review customer reviews from third-party aggregators. By following this process, you can more easily find the best travel insurance provider for your needs.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Travel Insurance Companies

  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom.
  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $7,000 trip to the United Kingdom.
  • A 19-year-old taking a $2,000 trip to France.
  • A 27-year-old couple taking a $1,200 trip to Greece.
  • A 51-year-old couple taking a $2,000 trip to Spain.
  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
