Getting Here

South Bend International Airport is about 15 minutes by car from the Notre Dame campus (flights should be booked to South Bend, Indiana -- airport code SBN). Various transportation methods are available (e.g., taxi, rental car, limo).

Visitors also can fly into Chicago then drive to Notre Dame. The University is about two hours by car from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and about 90 minutes from Midway International Airport.

The South Shore Line trains run directly from the Chicago Loop (at the corner of Michigan and Randolph) to South Bend International Airport (about a three-hour trip). From the airport, the Notre Dame campus is approximately a 15-minute ride by car. Various transportation methods are available (e.g., taxi, rental car, ride-hailing service).

Conferences and Accommodations

Experience Notre Dame provides clients assistance with everything from conferences and meetings to weddings and special Notre Dame experiences. Services include venue bookings, event planning, registration assistance, personalized consulting, on-site event support, and more.

In addition, Morris Inn provides guests with unparalleled comfort right in the heart of campus. The Inn is a AAA 4-Diamond Hotel, placing it in the top five percent of hotels in the U.S. Since its opening in 1952 and extensive renovation in 2013, Morris Inn continues to be the “living room of the University.”

Notre Dame Introduces ParkMobile for Visitor Parking

ParkMobile is a popular parking application that allows visitors to use their mobile devices to pay for hourly parking instead of a centralized pay station. Football fans already use ParkMobile for gameday parking, and now all campus visitors will be able to use it for their weekday parking needs.

Faculty, staff, and students with a valid Notre Dame parking permit do not need to purchase additional parking through ParkMobile.

Departments that would like to reimburse guests for special events can visit police.nd.edu/parking for more information.

Is there Wi-Fi on campus? Notre Dame’s Wi-Fi network is free and open to the public. Just look for “nd-guest” in your settings.

Is Notre Dame a cashless campus? Notre Dame is a cashless campus . Convert cash to prepaid credit cards and use anywhere Visa is accepted. Two convenient kiosks are available: one on the lower level of the LaFortune Student Center, next to the ATMs, and one in the Duncan Student Center on the first floor, next to the ATMs.

How can I order quick service food from campus eateries? Notre Dame food pickup and delivery are powered by Grubhub. We recommend you download the Grubhub app before your visit to order pickup from many of our locations .  Once downloaded, choose Campus Dining under 'account’ to see all of our campus restaurant locations including Chick-fil-A, Modern Market and Garbanzo Mediterranean Fresh. Some quick service locations have walk-up kiosks for ordering food on site. For more information, visit How to Dine on Campus .

In memoriam: William H. ‘Bill’ Leahy, professor emeritus of economics

Published: August 15, 2024

Author: College of Arts and Letters

William

William H. “Bill” Leahy, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Notre Dame, died Sunday (Aug. 11). He was 89.

Leahy was an indelible figure at the University of Notre Dame and worked in the Department of Economics for 54 years before his retirement in 2020. Throughout his career, his research focused on labor economics, collective bargaining, arbitration and industrial relations. He also published six books and more than 30 journal articles, and he held departmental leadership positions such as chair and director of undergraduate studies.

Beyond his research, Leahy was known for his ability to connect with students. He was an incredibly popular instructor and taught courses including a social science University Seminar, Labor Law and Employee Relations Law. In 2004, he was recognized with the Sheedy Excellence in Teaching Award, the College of Arts and Letters’ highest teaching honor.

“Bill's love of Notre Dame, and of our students, was unmatched,” said Michael Pries, professor of economics and Arts and Letters associate dean for the social sciences. “It brought him joy to teach and mentor them — his face would light up whenever he spoke of a student, whether it was a current student or someone from decades before.”

Born in Nyack, New York, Leahy came to Notre Dame in 1952 and received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University. His commitment to Notre Dame was everlasting and, at one point, he and his wife Sharon lived on campus in apartments that were once located where the Hesburgh Library now stands.

Leahy joined the economics department as an assistant professor in 1966, was promoted to associate professor in 1969 and professor in 1975. Affectionately known as “coach,” he was also heavily involved in the recruitment and advising of student-athletes and was recognized as an honorary member of the 1966 football team under coach Ara Parseghian.

“Bill's passion was students. He was not just interested in teaching them about economics, but in teaching them about life,” said Eric Sims, the Michael P. Grace II Collegiate Chair, professor and department chair, and 2023 Sheedy Award recipient. “Bill's vocation as a teacher and mentor was a gift to all who encountered him.”

Leahy is survived by his wife, six children and many grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at 9:30 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 16). Leahy requested that everyone wear casual clothing (especially Notre Dame or kelly green apparel).

“Bill’s love for Notre Dame and the economics department was legendary — he was a leader and anchor for decades,” said Mary Flannery, Arts and Letters associate dean for undergraduate studies and a former director of undergraduate studies in economics. “But he most often spoke about his family, both their struggles and accomplishments. They were absolutely his top priority. His devotion to his faith, his family and Notre Dame was an inspiration to us all.”

Notre dame suspends men’s swimming program due to gambling violations.

Notre Dame suspends men’s swimming program due to gambling violations

NEW YORK – Following a historic season, the University of Notre Dame has announced the men’s swimming program has been suspended for at least one academic year after an external review revealed numerous gambling violations, and an overall team culture that was dismissive of the university’s standards for student-athletes.

University of Notre Dame vice president and athletic director Pete Bevacqua announced on August 15 that the decision follows an external review that was conducted after the university received reports of possible misconduct on the men’s swimming team.

Bevacqua said that the external review confirmed the university’s “initial concerns about a deeply embedded team culture dismissive of Notre Dame’s standards for student-athletes, including our expectation that they treat one another with dignity and respect.” The review also found, Bevacqua said, that the swimmers bet on intercollegiate swimming.

“This independent, external review also documented numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions despite clear and recurrent training provided to all our student-athletes by our Athletics Compliance staff about those rules,” Bevacqua said in a statement.

“These findings are contrary to the University’s values and all that we stand for in Notre Dame Athletics,” Bevacqua continued. “In order to ensure that this behavior ends and to rebuild a culture of dignity, respect, and exemplary conduct, we have decided to suspend the men’s swimming program for at least one academic year.”

NCAA rules ban participation in sports betting activities and prohibit providing information to individuals involved or associated with any type of sports betting activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition, according to NCAA regulations.

Bevacqua said individual conduct varied, but the cultural dynamic of the team was such that a suspension of the entire program was necessary. He said he “profoundly regrets” that this decision impacts a small number of team members who did not participate in the conduct, as well as those who were planning on joining the team this fall.

“We deeply value our responsibilities as educators and our commitment to our student-athletes, and will work with other University offices as appropriate to provide support to those affected by our decision,” Bevacqua said. “While we are certainly disappointed by the actions that led to the decision, we recognize that our students make mistakes, and our goal is to educate and support them to the best of our ability.”

Bevacqua also exonerated the coaching staff, which is led by head coach Chris Lindauer.

He said the coaching staff participated and fully cooperated with the external review, which found that the staff was “not aware of gambling or the scope and extent of other troubling behaviors because team members effectively concealed such behaviors from the coaches and staff through concerted efforts.” Bevacqua added that when the staff became aware of isolated incidents they “treated them seriously and professionally.”

The discipline is strictly towards the men’s swimming program. The women’s swimming program, as well as the university’s men’s and women’s diving teams were not revealed to have participated in any wrongdoing. Olympic 4×100 free relay gold medalist Chris Guiliano, who was a senior at Notre Dame in 2023-24, is not believed to be one of the swimmers who gambled on races, according to Sports Illustrated, which broke the story on August 15.

Because of the timing of the suspension, returning members and incoming freshmen on the team are allowed to transfer to another university. The university’s swimming and diving rosters page only lists two divers on the men’s roster. Whereas, the women’s roster lists 33 members.

The suspension follows the program’s first ever top-10 finish last season, finishing in 10th place at the NCAA championships in March. The program’s previous best finish was 18th place in 2023.

Bevacqua said he hopes this decision sends a clear message to other university athletes.

“As stated at the launch of the review, we take seriously our obligation to foster a community of student-athletes who not only compete and perform at the highest level academically and athletically, but whose conduct reflects the University’s values,” Bevacqua said. “We hope this decision sends a clear and unequivocal message reaffirming that commitment and expectation.”

Residential Life Master Plan Update

Men S Residence Hall

Dear Undergraduate Students, As you know, residential life continues to be one of the most distinctive components of a Notre Dame undergraduate education, with the hall communities creating the basis for many of your spiritual, social, service, and athletic experiences. While the most important aspect of our residence hall communities continues to be the people who reside within them, the buildings themselves remain integral to supporting our students’ ability to experience personal growth and form valuable connections among one another.

Notre Dame men's swimming program suspended for at least one year over gambling violations

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish logo on a chair in 2015.

The Notre Dame men’s swimming program has been suspended for at least one academic year after an external investigation confirmed “initial concerns” regarding gambling and culture, Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua announced Thursday .

“These findings are contrary to the University’s values and all that we stand for in Notre Dame athletics,” Bevacqua said in a statement. “In order to ensure that this behavior ends and to rebuild a culture of dignity, respect, and exemplary conduct, we have decided to suspend the men’s swimming program for at least one academic year. While individual conduct varied, the overwhelming cultural dynamic on the team necessitates a full suspension.”

The women’s swimming team and men’s and women’s diving teams were not revealed to be part of the operation. Head coach Chris Lindauer and the rest of the coaching staff were not disciplined.

The NCAA does not allow any athlete to gamble on college sports or provide any information that could influence a bet.

Notre Dame said the external review “documented numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions despite clear and recurrent training provided to all our student-athletes by our Athletics Compliance staff about those rules.”

Though the men’s swimmers will be allowed to transfer to other schools ahead of the upcoming season, any discipline they receive from the NCAA will follow them to another program. Swimmers who remain at Notre Dame may also face punishment from the school.

The suspension comes on the heels of Notre Dame’s first top-10 finish in men’s swimming history at the NCAA championships in March. The program also sent its first male swimmer, Chris Guiliano, to the Olympics, though he is not believed to have gambled on races, according to SI.
