"Top rate!! I’m very impressed with World Travel Agency! My girlfriends and I traveled to Cancun, Mexico to celebrate my retirement. Using World Travel lessened the stress of planning the trip; they were very accommodating to our needs.  Especially... help with airport pickup, check-in/out, use of the amenities on site and concierge help. World Travel Agency was also very timely with responses to my questions. No doubt, I will use their service again." - Terry Prince

"Traveling can sometimes be stressful with all the planning but World Travel Agency made our trip stress free and so enjoyable! My husband and I used World Travel Agency for our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for anything better. From the pre-trip planning, convenient and professional airport pickup, room accommodations, concierge service, excursion packages to spa options everything was easy to schedule and convenient. Every part of our trip was a fantastic experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives and it wouldn't have been possible without World Travel Agency. Thank you for everything!" - Megan Haynes

“ Thanks World Travel Agency!  The highest compliment my wife and I can give is telling you we intend to return next year!  The gated resort you booked for us, situated on a beautiful beach provided the perfect vacation.  After our days on the beach, my wife and I enjoyed delicious dinners and then returned to the beach for sunsets. Several nights there was a fabulous mariachi band on the beach.  Starry evenings, listening to good music, capped wonderful days. It was tough to leave.” - Andrew Mckelvey

“The trip was absolutely delightful! We had a wonderful time and I would be happy to recommend the resort to anyone.  The staff was very kind, attentive and accommodating.  The food was great and the happy hours every day did not go unused! Thank you for all your help and I look forward to working with World Travel Agency on another trip again in the not too distant future.  Kindest regards!”- Stacey Finnegan

"The resort was great! There was lots for everyone to do and we all had a fun time. We appreciate your assistance finding us a great place for a family vacation.  The swimming pools and workout facilities were excellent and the restaurant selection and tasty food pleased my wife and the kids. Thanks for everything, we look forward to using World Travel Agency on another family vacation."- Tim Nguyen

“We were referred to Mike LaBaw/World Travel Agency, by a friend and we could not be more pleased. Right from the start Mike had excellent suggestions, and surprisingly good deals. He put us into a beautiful resort in Mexico. We had an awesome room with an amazing view of the ocean. We will be recommending World Travel Agency to our friends.” - Louis Wald

20 largest travel companies in the world.

In this article, we will be covering the 20 largest travel companies in the world. If you want to skip our detailed analysis of the travel and tourism industry, you can go directly to 5 Largest Travel Companies In The World .

The travel and tourism sector plays a vital role in global economies. It creates jobs, fosters cultural exchange, and supports local businesses. It promotes understanding between nations while also contributing significantly to GDP growth. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), travel and tourism accounted for 7.6% of global GDP in 2022 while also creating 22 million new jobs around the world.

An Analysis of the Global Travel and Tourism Industry

The travel and tourism sector plays a crucial role in addressing societal and economic challenges. The industry is now thriving after being severely impacted during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, which led to travel restrictions, cancellations, and a sharp decline in tourism activities. According to a report by Market Research Future, the global travel and tourism market reached a value of $648.03 billion in 2023. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% from 2023 to 2032 and reach a value of more than $1.01 trillion by the end of the forecasted period. The North American region leads the global travel and tourism market, while Europe follows as the second-largest market. The Asia-Pacific region is anticipated to exhibit the fastest growth in the industry during the forecasted period.

The travel and tourism market is undergoing a digital transformation with online booking platforms, travel agencies, mobile apps, and online travel-related services driving growth by enhancing connectivity and providing convenient and personalized traveler experiences. The trend of cultural and experiential tourism, with travelers seeking authentic, immersive experiences, unique destinations, and local experiences, is also a key factor driving market growth. Moreover, the rise in disposable incomes, especially in emerging markets, is leading to increased tourism. More people have the means to explore domestic and international destinations. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), domestic visitor spending saw an increase of 20.4% in 2022. On the other hand, international visitor spending went up by 81.9% in 2022.

Here are some comments from Booking Holdings Inc.’s (NASDAQ:BKNG) Q4 2023 earnings call:

“As we look to the year ahead, we see strong growth on the books for travel that’s scheduled to take place in 2024, which gives early indications of potentially another record summer travel season. As we’ve noted previously, a high percentage of these bookings are capable and what is on the books today for the summer period represents a small percentage of the total bookings that we expect to ultimately receive. David will provide further details on fourth quarter results and on our thoughts about the first quarter and full year 2024. Looking back at the full year of 2023, I am proud of our efforts to drive more benefits to our travelers and supply partners while also delivering record-setting industry-leading financial results. Planning a trip can be easier through an online travel agency than if you handle each aspect of the planning separately. You can book hotels, air travel, rental cars, and more through a single site, and booking everything together sometimes results in discounts. By inputting a destination, a range of dates, and other preferences, you will see a list of options for each aspect of travel.

The best online travel agencies offer options from the largest number of airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, and more. Look for sites that offer discounts for combining reservations for different aspects of your trip. For example, the best sites will have lower rates if you book both plane tickets and a hotel through their services. The best sites also provide reviews from customers who actually have booked through the service. These are our top picks.

Final Verdict

Frequently asked questions, methodology, best overall : booking.com.

 Booking.com

This industry leader offers one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms on the Internet.

Lots of options to choose from

Interface is easy to use

Numerous filters to customize your search

Tricky to tell whether changes/cancellations can be made with Booking.com or the vendor directly

Booking.com was founded in 1996 and has grown into an industry leader that stands out for being one of the most comprehensive trip planning platforms out there. From one website, you can compare and book accommodations, flights (including one-way and multi-city flights), sightseeing activities, and even airport taxis. The website lists more than 28 million accommodation options, from hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to vacation homes and luxury resorts—you can browse more choices per destination on Booking.com than other online travel agencies. The website also performs well on cost and typically returns lower-than-average prices for flights and hotels.

Booking.com's interface is also easy to use. On the home page, search for a hotel by entering your chosen destination and dates. Then, use the extensive list of filters—such as price range and distance from the city center—to narrow the results down and find the best fit. You can also search for a specific hotel, or seek inspiration by clicking through options grouped by destination or property type or by topic such as the country’s best Michelin-starred hotel restaurants or the top cities for vegan travelers. The flights, car rental, and other tabs are just as intuitive.

Best Budget : Skyscanner

 Skyscanner

You can compare prices across airlines, hotels, and car rentals.

Simple interface

Option to toggle searches between specific dates or by monthly calendars

Search Everywhere button is great for spontaneous planners

Extra clicks are required to make a final purchase

Must read fine print for changes/cancellations—may need to deal directly with the vendor

Ads on the sidebar can be distracting

Find deals on airfare, hotels, and car rentals with an aggregator site like Skyscanner , which uses a metasearch engine to compare prices from all online travel agencies and the airline, hotel, or car rental company in question. Run searches with fixed dates, opt to compare airfare prices month to month, or click “Cheapest Month.” Searches also include options for nearby airports or non-stop flights only. With hotel searches, you can choose to select only from properties with free cancellation, a cleanliness rating of 4.5/5 or higher, or 3- or 4-starred hotels only. Car rental searches include an option to select “return car to different location.”

Once you’ve found the best rate, click on the link to be redirected to the third-party site to make your booking. Feeling spontaneous? The Search Everywhere button on the homepage offers a list of the cheapest flight deals for destinations both locally and across the world—just plug in your departure airport first.

Best Price Predictor : Hopper

The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting when flights and hotel rates will be cheapest.

Color-coded system makes it easy to determine cheapest days to buy

App is easy to use

Option to track flights and receive alerts when the best time to buy arises

Some have mentioned the app functions better as a research tool than a booking tool

Unclear whether Hopper will price match if you find a cheaper flight elsewhere

Hopper is a travel app available on iOS and Android that aims to help travelers save on airfare by usng historical data and their own algorithm to predict when flights will be cheapest. Just type in where and when you’d like to fly and Hopper will present you with a color-coded pricing calendar indicating how much tickets are likely to cost. (Green is the least expensive, then yellow, orange, and red for most expensive.) Hopper will also recommend you either buy now or wait, or you can choose to watch a trip and receive notifications on the best time to buy. In addition, the app has expanded to offer hotel and car rental price predictions, too.

Some newer features since the app’s inception in 2009 include an option to freeze a price for a limited time—for an extra fee—as well as exclusive app-only discounts. Hopper is free to download, and you can choose to book directly through the app, though some users mentioned they use Hopper as more of a research tool before booking directly with the airline or hotel. The company claims a 95 percent accuracy rate at predicting flight rates up to a year ahead.

Most Innovative : Kiwi.com

This metasearch engine scours the web to piece together the ideal itinerary using planes, trains, buses, and more.

Creative itineraries get you where you need to go, especially if you’ve got a multi-stop trip

Kiwi Guarantee offers rebooking or cancellation protections

Nomad option appeals to travelers with a lot of flexibility

Creative itineraries mean you may not fly out of the same airport you flew into

Kiwi Guarantee has an additional fee

Charges all-in-one fee for booking flights, trains, buses (though you can always purchase a la carte)

Travelers planning multi-city destinations and seeking a bargain, as well as those looking to take planes, trains, and automobiles to get there, might consider Kiwi . Kiwi is a metasearch engine that scours and pieces together itineraries from various airlines (even if they don’t have a codeshare agreement), considers multiple airports (even if your arrival airport is different from departure), and offers booking options, whether you’re looking at very specific dates or more general ones (up to 60 nights).

Some will find the ability to make multiple bookings for a particular trip more convenient than going at it manually several different times, though note that you must opt into the Kiwi Guarantee program to access rebooking and refund protections should your reservation change or be canceled. Kiwi’s Nomad option allows you to plug in a bunch of destinations you’d like to visit and the length of your intended stay, and the website will churn out the most affordable itineraries for review.

Best for Eco-Conscious : Kind Traveler

A give-and-get business model means booking accommodations with exclusive perks, a donation to environmental organizations, and more.

All participating hotels include a local give-back component

Exclusive savings and perks

Participating hotels are located in some of the most beautiful places in the world

Inventory is much smaller compared to other booking platforms

Some of the amenities mentioned are based on availability only

In 2022, Kind Traveler (an online trave agency focused on hotel bookings) announced an increase in environmentally and socially conscious hotels, charity donations, voluntourism opportunities, and additional perks like waived resort fees or a welcome amenity.

Unlock exclusive hotel rates and perks from participating Kind Traveler hotels with a minimum $10/night minimum donation to a local charity. For example, stay at the Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives and receive up to $33 off the nightly rate and perks such as a food and beverage credit and an Earth Lab or Alchemy Bar workshop when you make a donation to Manta Trust. The organization funds coastal research to protect the island nation’s large yet fragile population of reef mantas.

Select from more than 140 participating hotels from the Hawaiian Islands to Bozeman, Montana, and the Maldives. Charities include wildlife, human rights, arts, education, and environmental preservation organizations.

Best for Social Impact : I Like Local

Choose from a host of travel experiences with the peace of mind that 100 percent of the cost goes directly to local partners.

Social impact mission woven into organization’s business model

Immersive experiences led by local guides

Range of experiences offered

May not be best fit for those seeking upscale, luxury experiences and stays

Can’t sort experiences by a list of countries (though an interactive map is available)

No experiences outside of Africa and Asia

For an online travel agency with a booking platform designed to route dollars spent directly to the communities travelers intend to visit, consider I Like Local . Visit the website to browse a host of travel experiences in countries including Indonesia, Kenya, and Cambodia. Experiences include homestays and farmstays as well as wellness and culturally oriented experiences—from cooking and cycling tours to weaving classes.

To search for an experience, select from drop-down items like travel dates and experience categories, or view a global map and click on a country to view experiences that way.

The platform got its start in 2014 and has grown to 4,000 local hosts across nearly 20 countries. As a social impact organization, 100 percent of each booking fee goes to local hosts. To date, 16,000 travelers have booked with I Like Local.

Best for Design-Forward Homestays : Plum Guide

Browse and book seriously vetted, design-forward vacation homes.

Highly curated inventory of vacation rentals across the world

Design-forward

Thorough vetting process

Does not publish guest reviews

Other platforms have homes available across more destinations

When it comes to booking a vacation home, serviced apartment, or condo, travelers are spoiled for choice. Plum Guide is an online travel agency that specializes in accommodations—though not just any home makes its directory. The company claims that each potential home listed on its site must jump through 150 hoops to be included, from internet speed and mattress and pillow quality to the showers’ water pressure and the home’s proximity to dining, shopping, and attractions.

Search by a featured collection on the website such as “ pet-friendly homes ” or “one-of-a-kind homes in Palm Springs.” Scroll to the bottom of its homepage to view its top destinations, as well as a list of all destinations where Plum Guide homes are available, including Barbados, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, the U.S., and Turkey. Note: From the top right-hand corner of the site, use the dropdown menu to select currency of choice.

As long as you know what you value most out of your travel experience—such as affordability, social impact, or luxe accommodations—there’s an online travel agency to help plan your next trip. Be sure to read the fine print, as some agencies are third-party websites and not direct vendors. If you're not sure where to start, Booking.com is your best bet for a smooth user experience and hard-to-beat offers on flights, hotels, and other travel arrangements.

What Is the Biggest Travel Agency?

Our choice for best overall, Booking.com, is known as an industry leader with listings for all major hotels, airlines, car rental companies, and more. It boasts more choices for accommodations per destination than any other site, and we found its interface to be user-friendly.

Are Online Travel Agencies Worth It?

This depends on your needs and priorities. The best online travel agencies certainly can save time by booking everything all at once. However, if you're someone who is good at haggling and enjoys the details of planning a trip, you might be able to find better deals by reaching out to hotels or other destinations and speaking to someone personally.

Is It Cheaper to Book Online Than With a Travel Agent?

Not always. A travel agent you know and trust should have the experience and connections to find deals that can match or surpass what you'll find online. Additionally, if something goes wrong, travel agents provide you with an actual person you can use as an advocate to correct the problem . But if you don't have access to a good travel agent, online sites still provide plenty of ways to streamline planning and save money .

We considered dozens of online travel agencies and narrowed down the options based on user experience, volume and quality of inventory, unique offerings and specials, and customer reviews. We also assessed travel companies’ environmentally and socially conscious policies.

Explore the Republic: New ASUS ROG Video Stars Legendary Voice Actors at the ROG Travel Agency

Steven Ogg, Ned Luke, and Samantha Béart take on new roles as larger-than-life travel agents

  • Traveling reimagined: Characters that gamers know and love return in a fun alternate-reality travel agency
  • A peek behind the curtain: Ned, Steven, and Samantha share behind-the-scenes moments on set
  • ROG products transport gamers to new worlds everyday: Zephyrus, Flow, Ally, and Strix devices take gamers wherever their heart desires

TAIPEI, Taiwan, August 16, 2024 — ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today released the first video in a series featuring iconic video game voice actors as employees at an off-beat ROG travel agency desperately trying to help their customers experience new worlds. The first video features Steven Ogg, Ned Luke, and Samantha Béart, known for their iconic roles in Grand Theft Auto V and Baldur’s Gate III. The trio also share a glimpse behind the scenes of the video with ROG. ROG Zephyrus, ROG Strix, ROG Flow and ROG Ally products take gamers to new places every day.

Traveling reimagined

Starring Steven Ogg and Ned Luke , perhaps best known for their portrayals of Trevor and Michael in Grand Theft Auto V, and Samantha art, who stars as Karlach in Baldur’s Gate III, this first episode is set in an ROG travel agency. This off-beat business makes numerous references to these two games as the characters attempt to sell a customer a fantastic vacation. From reassuring phrases that you want to hear from a travel agent like “an easy escape from... cops” and “Because your safety is our priority”, to a larger-than-life battleaxe for exploring dungeons, the trio make clear that gaming can be a perfect holiday from everyday life — with the true ticket being an ROG gaming machine.

A peek behind the curtain

The incredible actors shared some thoughts on the shoot with the ROG team. The long history between Steven and Ned was front and center, with Steven saying “Absolutely not” when asked if Ned was a good supervisor for ROG Travel. These two voice actors have worked together for years, and they seemed to enjoy embodying two characters that played off of their interpersonal tension again. Steven did think that 'bullying Ned' was a pretty sweet perk of working for the agency, along with the pants-optional dress code at ROG Travel. When asked what ROG device he would recommend on the go, Steven suggested “[The ROG] Ally X. Fast, powerful, portable”. The complete behind-the-scenes video will be available on September 13, 2024.

Here’s Everything You Need to Travel the World

F iguring out how to travel the world is no easy feat, especially when you’re trying to do it on a budget or planning world travel with a family.

There are many factors to keep in mind when evaluating your trip, including what to do before leaving and your budget. To help you get started, we’ve put together a guide on how to travel the world, including everything from how to start looking into your trip to how to save money once you’re abroad.

1. Get prepared

If you want to travel the world, there are some planning measures you want to take first to ensure you have durable luggage and the proper documents — a passport and possibly visas — and figuring out how much time off you’ll need.

Get your documents in order

Those in the U.S. will want an up-to-date driver’s license because by Oct. 1, 2020, all U.S. residents traveling domestically must have identification compliant with the Real-ID Act , which increased security requirements for state drivers licenses and ID cards.

Residents in 24 states including Alaska, California, Idaho, Maine, Oregon and Washington have until Oct. 10, 2018 get a Real-ID compliant card, though states have the option to apply for exemptions through Oct. 1, 2020 when the last phase of the Real-ID Act is enforced, meaning residents in those states should regularly check the status of their IDs before flying.

For travel outside of the U.S., passport cards or trusted traveler cards can serve as documents at certain land and sea crossings. But you’ll want to make sure you have a passport book if there’s any chance you might leave or enter another country via plane, where passport cards won’t work.

Already have a passport? You’ll want check if it’s valid for at least six months after planned trips. That’s because some countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Russia make this a requirement for entering their countries. Renewing a passport takes at least six to eight weeks through the mail, but those with proof of international travel (like a flight itinerary) can get an expedited passport renewal for an additional $60 to the $110 fee and by visiting a passport center in person.

International travel could also require a visa depending on the location and duration of your trip. Some countries have agreements in place that allow travelers to enter and leave visa free. For example, the U.S. and Canada don’t require visas for travel ( except in certain circumstances ), and Europe’s 26 Schengen States have a system where a visa issued by one of the 26 states typically allows travel throughout the others for up to 90 days.

To find out if your trip requires a visa, check your destination’s embassy or consulate website. Some countries will allow you to travel visa-free for a short stay. Others, like Lebanon , also allow citizens from destinations like the U.S. to get a visa upon arrival.

Get your vacation dates in order

Working while traveling can be tricky, but there are a few steps you can take that don’t involve quitting your job to travel the world.

Start by saving vacation days if you work at a company that pays out for these dates. Those looking to trade in vacation days can also check out companies like PTO Exchange , which lets companies buy back unused vacation days so employees can convert these days into travel, health benefits or charity credits.

Speed up security wait times

Signing up for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry can help save you time when moving in and out of airports.

TSA PreCheck , which costs $85 for a five-year membership, allows you to speed through domestic airport security without having to remove your shoes, belt, laptop, liquids or light jackets. The service is currently available in 200 airports in the U.S. across 47 participating airlines .

Global Entry , which costs $100 for a five-year membership will get you the same expedited screening through airport security as TSAPreCheck does, while also giving you the added benefit of expedited U.S. customs screenings through automated airport kiosks when arriving from an international destination.

Look for work on the road

Even if you leave your job to travel the world, there are some ways you can make money while abroad .

Companies like Upwork allow people to find work almost anywhere, even while traveling, since it’s open to freelancers across a wide range of fields that include video production, translation, programming, designing, writing, and mobile development. Income will vary on the type of position and number of hours worked, but freelancers can often rack up hourly rates that go as high as $200 per hour, according to Upwork representatives.

You could also find a place to stay through companies like the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms ( WOOF ), which offers housing at organic farms around the world in exchange for volunteering on the farm, doing everything from feeding livestock and watering gardens to harvesting fruit trees.

Get the right credit card

Having the best travel credit card for your trip can not only prevent foreign transaction fees, but also help you reap rewards and perks during your trip.

A few cards with travel benefits include the Chase Sapphire Reserve ($450 annual fee), which offers $300 toward travel costs, $100 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, access to thousands of airport lounges, zero foreign transaction fees, and a 1:1 point transfer program towards top airline and hotel loyalty programs. The Bank of America Travel Rewards no-fee card lets you easily cash points to use toward airline tickets, baggage, hotel stays, car rentals and cruise packages. The card offers unlimited points, with up to 1.5 points for every $1 spent and 20,000 bonus points if you make at least $1,000 in purchases the first three months of opening your account.

When it comes to savings on hotels, the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card lets you earn five points for every dollar you spend at one of the company’s hotels, and two points at participating Marriott Rewards hotels.

2. Book travel far in advance

After all that preparation, you’re ready to book your trip around the world, which will likely be a round-the-world plane ticket, a journey by sea, or a combination of flights and ground transportation.

Below is a breakdown of how different travel options work:

Consider a round-the-world ticket

Round-the-world tickets allow you to buy a ticket and fly with various airlines under one alliance. But there are some regulations to keep in mind. Tickets are usually valid for up to one year, though flyers are required to start and end their trip in the same country through the following major alliances:

  • Star Alliance (including Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, Austrian, United, and Lufthansa) bases its round-the-world tickets on the number of miles, with levels of passes you can choose from based on mile increments. You can take up to 15 stopovers, but you’ll need to keep moving in the same direction as how you started your trip.
  • OneWorld (including American Airlines , British Airways , Cathay Pacific , and Qantas) has two different round-the-world ticket options. Its Global Explorer ticket is a mile-based option with four different mile increments to choose from, while the One World Explorer is based on the number of continents you visit, with up to four segments (flights) you can take in each of the six continents the alliance flies into.
  • Skyteam’s (including Delta, Air France, Korean Air, AeroMexico) round-the-world option requires a minimum of two stops and runs for a year, with the alliance even offering theme-based trips, like beach or history, to make planning your ticket a little easier.

Round-The-World tickets can cost around $2,000 , and Dave Grossman, author or MilesTalk: Live Your Wildest Travel Dreams Using Miles and Points , recommends checking whether it’s cheaper to book a round-the-world trip or individual legs by entering itinerary into Google Flights and comparing the overall price to those offered when building an itinerary out on the alliance websites.

You can also book round-the-world tickets through a travel agent or third-party sites like AirTreks of Flight Centre . These sites can be cheaper because they often pull together individual airline tickets based on the lowest fares to create a round-the-world itinerary.

However, round-the-world ticket travelers should note: missing one leg of your ticket could cancel the rest of your trip, making it best for travelers who feel comfortable planning out a lengthy trip well in advance.

Take a world cruise

If you’re looking to travel the world by sea, a world cruise can provide the flexibility to explore multiple continents, traveling from the U.S. to Europe for example, or to hone in on one continent. Itineraries vary by cruise, and world cruises can be great for families, retirees or those who can be at sea for around three months.

Sometimes, cruise lines will offer the option to book only a segment of world cruise, which can range from two weeks to a month. To book a segment, prospective travelers will also have to add a one-way trip to or from the start or end of their journey.

The costs of world cruises can be anywhere from $13,000 to upwards of $40,000 per person, as Cruise Critic points out.

Take a repositioning cruise

If you’re looking to travel the world for cheap, consider a repositioning cruise, which take place when ships need to relocate from one region to another. The cruises can cost up to $50 less per day than classic cruises and typically take place during shifting seasons like the fall and the spring. Cruise lines often sell repositioning tickets as one-way routes.

Consider train travel

If you plan on using trains throughout your world travel, there are a few options. For example, select companies like Great Rail Journeys now offer around the world rail journeys as well as a variety of rail passes.

Amtrak offers U.S. rail passes with 15-day ($459 for adults), 30-day ($689 for adults), and 45-day ($899 for adults) pass options that let you travel across eight segments (stops), 12 segments (stops), and 18 segments (stops).

Rail passes are a popular way to explore multiple stops within continents like Europe on the cheap. The Eurail Global Pass is the only rail pass that lets international travelers visit all of Europe , with unlimited travel offered in 28 countries. Eurail sells its global passes directly through its official website with a variety of prices and time options, starting at $600 per person for six days of travel within a month.

Those looking for the cheapest ways to travel, which can involve buses or ferries, can check out Rome2Rio , which lets you see all the transportation you can take between two locations and what route will be the cheapest. There are also lower-cost options like Berlinbus (a low cost bus operator in Germany) and the Student Agency Bus , which will give you discounted prices on coach lines in Europe. Swiss Federal Railways, often called SBB , also provides travelers with a wide variety of overnight train options, allowing you to save on overnight hotel fees to travel instead.

Know when to book

Unfortunately, there’s no magic set of days before your trip that will get you the best deal on flights. But travel seekers can keep an eye out for regular flight sales on social media, where airlines will often announce flash sales. And there are certain travel apps that will alert you when the price has gone down on flights you’re interested in.

3. Avoid hidden travel and communication fees

Once you’ve started your trip, there are tips and tricks to help you travel each destination across the world on a budget. Here are some ways to cut costs during your travel around the world:

Grab a city pass

City-pass offerings vary by location, but many will give you free or discounted admission to top attractions in a city, as well as fast-track options to cut lines. Some passes, like the Paris Pass , also include free transport throughout the city as well as admission to attractions. If you’re traveling in the U.S., you can check out the CityPASS network , which provides discounts on attractions across 12 North American cities.

Eliminate hidden hotel fees

To reduce hidden hotel fees (that is, after checking what hidden fees the hotel charges before you book), you can ask the hotel whether they can forego additional fees for amenities you don’t use, like the gym or in-room safe. The hotel may be able to remove these charges from your bill before you arrive.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive property, you’ll want to look into the fine print and the “terms and conditions” of your stay. The reason for this is that some properties will charge more for items like champagne, high-end liquor or some activities. The easiest way to spot these is by keeping your eye out for asterisks in promotions and advertisements.

Communicate for free

Close-up of businesswomans hands holding phone

Communicating with friends and family while traveling is important, but roaming charges and international calling fees can add up quickly.

Apps like WhatsApp, Viber and Skype, which allow messaging and calling for free over Wi-Fi if you have an Android phone. You can also grab a local SIM card, which you can purchase at airport vending machines and convenience stores. The Local SIM app can pinpoint the best local cellular carrier to grab your SIM card.

Choose Restaurants Wisely

While eating food from around the world is often one of the best parts of traveling, dining out for every meal can become expensive. To save some money: stay away from restaurants located near tourist attractions, which generally have higher prices and lower quality . Some travel experts recommend making lunch your biggest meal, when prices can be half that of dinner, according to CheapOAir.

Ask about free amenities on flights and at hotels

Some airlines and hotels have free perks available to guests who know to ask for them. On flights, for example, travelers can request everything from ukuleles on some Hawaiian Airlines flights to hot chocolate on Southwest Airlines. Some hotels also offer free amenities that range from night lights, chargers and curling irons at Kimpton Hotels to complimentary yoga sessions at select Hyatt properties.

Gateway Travel Host Agency

Discover the Significant Benefits of Host Agencies for New Travel Agents

August 20, 2024

Gateway Travel agents

Joining the travel industry as a new agent can be both thrilling and daunting. Crafting unique travel experiences and the opportunity to explore the world while earning a living is a dream for many. For new agents wanting to boost their careers and simplify business operations, partnering with a host agency is pivotal. Gateway Travel, a leading host agency , is a prime example of how such collaborations can reshape a travel agent's journey. This article illuminates the substantial benefits of working with host agencies and underscores why they are crucial for budding travel agents.

Understanding Host Agencies

Before delving into the benefits, let’s clarify what host agencies are. Host agencies like Gateway Travel function as a supportive backbone for independent travel agents, offering vital tools, resources, training, and connections essential for success without the hefty overhead costs of a conventional travel agency.

Access to a Wealth of Resources

A major advantage of teaming up with a host agency is gaining access to a rich array of resources. These include state-of-the-art booking systems, exclusive supplier deals, and marketing tools typically out of reach for solo agents.

"Host agencies provide their agents with access to a multitude of resources they otherwise might not have, including higher commissions, marketing resources, training, and more," reports Travel Pulse. This unparalleled access equips new agents with the tools they need to thrive.

Training and Professional Development

Structured Learning Programs

New travel agents benefit from the structured training programs offered by host agencies. These programs are tailored to enhance agents' industry knowledge, product understanding, and technological prowess. Gateway Travel, for example, provides extensive training sessions to keep agents competitive and informed.

Training session with Gateway Travel agents

Continuing Education

The travel industry is perpetually evolving, with new trends , destinations, and technologies emerging regularly. It's crucial for travel agents to stay updated. Host agencies ensure ongoing education, so their agents stay at the forefront of industry developments.

"Host agencies commit to ongoing education and support, ensuring that travel agents remain knowledgeable and skilled, keeping up with industry changes and innovations," states Travel Market Report.

Mentorship and Networking

Another significant benefit of working with host agencies is access to experienced mentors and a vast professional network. These connections can provide advice, share best practices, and offer encouragement.

"Mentorship from experienced travel professionals and access to a network of like-minded agents can greatly accelerate one's growth in the industry," adds Travel Weekly.

Enhanced Commissions and Financial Incentives

Host agencies often offer higher commission rates and other financial incentives, which can significantly boost a new agent's earning potential. By negotiating better deals and partnerships with suppliers, host agencies ensure their agents receive competitive compensation.

Administration and Back-Office Support

Running a travel agency involves various administrative tasks, which can be overwhelming for new agents. Host agencies typically handle these back-office aspects, allowing agents to focus on client services and sales.

"Partnering with a host agency like Gateway Travel means having a dedicated team to manage administrative tasks, which can free up valuable time for agents to concentrate on building their client base," highlights Travel Agent Central.

For new travel agents, partnering with a host agency offers numerous advantages, from access to invaluable resources and training to enhanced commissions and critical support systems. Agencies like Gateway Travel exemplify how these collaborations can empower agents to navigate the industry successfully and build prosperous careers.

Why El Salvador is Central America’s best-kept secret

El Carmen Church in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Photo / Getty Images

Breathtaking volcanoes, world-class surf beaches, and the warmest locals you’ll ever meet are why El Salvador is one of Central America’s best-kept travel secrets, writes Ash Jurberg

Four years ago, if you’d told me I’d be recommending a trip to the former “Murder Capital of the World” I’d have thought you were joking. But here I am, fresh from an adventure that shattered every preconception I held about this misunderstood country.

During the long, isolated months of Covid-19, I first connected with Joe, a writer living worlds away in El Salvador. Little did I know that this virtual connection would eventually lead me to a place I had only read about in alarming headlines over the years.

After four years of using WhatsApp and Facebook messaging, Joe emailed me, suggesting we meet in person in his home country. “El Salvador has been radically transformed,” he wrote. “It’s now the safest country in Central America.” My finger paused over the reply button. With a deep breath, I began typing. “I’m in. Let’s do this … ” And just like that, I committed to an adventure .

READ MORE: 5 of the best countries to visit before the year ends

First impressions: A warm welcome

Arriving in a country is usually a mix of excitement, jetlag, and frustration. Many countries seem to revel in the latter – I should know; I’ve been to 109 of them. Weary travellers are often met with long immigration queues, customs agents who put the terror in interrogation, and lots of red tape. However, the arrival process into El Salvador was the smoothest I’ve ever experienced. There were no queues, and the customs agents smiled as I approached.

The agent processing my entry into the country said, “Welcome to El Salvador,” with such friendliness I almost expected her to hug me. Instead of asking me hundreds of questions, she seemed excited that I was visiting and wished me a pleasant trip. This warmth and optimism were palpable throughout my time in the country. Every local I met was not just welcoming but genuinely glad that I wanted to explore their country. There was a sense of hope and excitement about the recent transformation and the potential for increased tourism.

Easy to explore the diverse sights

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America , making it easy to visit many top sights from its centrally located capital, San Salvador. I had a busy schedule and began exploring the historic centre, home to beautifully restored buildings such as the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral, which capture the spirit of the capital’s colonial architecture.

Even the Starbucks, nestled within the National Theatre, is a place of beauty, more reminiscent of a museum than a chain cafe. But to truly experience the city’s renaissance, the trendy Zona Rosa district is the place to be. It’s home to hip cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops that showcase the creative energy of El Salvador’s youth.

Pupusas, a taste of Salvadoran culture

One of the highlights of my trip was trying pupusas, El Salvador’s national dish. “Nothing that fancy, and at the same time, the indisputable pinnacle of Salvadoran cuisine,” Joe explained as we devoured these delicious stuffed rice tortillas at a local pupuseria.

These simple yet satisfying corn or rice dough discs are filled with various ingredients, cooked on a griddle, and served with cabbage slaw and tomato sauce. My favourite was the revuelta, stuffed with beans, cheese, and chicharron (pork). The crispy exterior gives way to a gooey, flavourful centre. A hearty meal of three pupusas will set you back less than NZ$10 and fuel you up for exploration. The unique combination of ingredients and the skilful preparation make pupusas a must-try dish in El Salvador.

Natural wonders and breathtaking views

El Salvador offers diverse highlights bound to satisfy any nature enthusiast. I took a short walk up San Salvador volcano, just 20 minutes from the capital. Here, I saw my first example of the country preparing to welcome tourists, with new paths being developed, an expanded visitors’ centre, and plans for a bird sanctuary and adrenaline activities.

At the peak, I breathed in the crisp air on the volcano’s rim as I listened to my guide, Omar, serenade me with El Carbonero , a folk song about a coal merchant considered El Salvador’s second national anthem. His soft voice provided the perfect soundtrack to the magnificent views. Omar used the song to illustrate the nation’s proud history and resilience.

El Salvador is home to stunning volcanoes such as the San Salvador Volcano and the Santa Ana Volcano. Photo / 123rf

For an even more spectacular experience, I recommend hiking the Santa Ana Volcano. The 90-minute trek to the top is rewarded with breathtaking views over a bright green crater lake. In any other location, the peak would be swarming with influencers attempting to catch the perfect Instagram shot. Yet, once again, we had the place to ourselves. And no filters were needed to enhance our view.

Santa Ana is less than 40km from Lake Coatepeque. This stunning body of water can change from deep blue to glowing turquoise, a phenomenon that had it in the running to be selected as the eighth natural wonder of the world. The surrounding landscape, with its lush greenery and the majestic San Vicente volcano in the distance, adds to the beauty of the lake. I spent the night in a villa overlooking the lake, and the following day, I had to pinch myself as I drank fresh Salvadoran coffee while watching the sunrise.

The beautiful Lake Coatepeque is known for its ability to change colour from deep blue to glowing turquoise. Photo / 123rf

To end my week, I headed to the postcard-worthy surf beaches of El Tunco on the Pacific Coast. This laid-back town, known as Surf City, has the vibes and feel of beach towns in Southeast Asia, again without the crowds I always encountered. El Tunco is a surfer’s paradise, with consistent waves suitable for beginners and experts alike.

Even if you’re not into surfing, the beach’s black sand and stunning sunsets make it the perfect place to unwind and reflect on your Salvadoran adventure. For the more active, there are nearby waterfalls and sea caves to explore.

Sitting at a beachside bar as the sun goes down and drinking a cold cerveza was a reward for my hikes earlier in the week.

El Salvador boasts world-class surf beaches, particularly in the town of El Tunco, also known as Surf City. Photo / 123rf

A nation reborn

Over the week, every misconception I had about El Salvador was shattered. I found a nation brimming with natural splendour, a rich cultural tapestry, and an indomitable spirit. Interacting with friendly locals further reinforced how misleading the country’s reputation was. I never felt unsafe and would be hard-pressed to name a friendlier country of the many I have visited.

El Salvador is on the cusp of a tourism boom. Now is the time to visit – before the crowds discover this Central American gem. You’ll experience its raw beauty and rich culture and be part of its inspiring journey of transformation.

And who knows? You might even share a pupusa with Joe or be serenaded by Omar. I’m sure they will be happy to indulge you.

Top 5 tips for visiting El Salvador:

  • Learn basic Spanish phrases – while some locals speak English, a few words will go a long way.
  • Always eat pupusas with your hands. It is frowned upon to use a knife and fork.
  • Visit during the dry season (November to April) for the best weather.
  • The official currency of El Salvador is US dollars, which can be obtained from any ATM. Fun fact, El Salvador was also the first country to use Bitcoin as legal tender.
  • Engage with locals – their warmth and hospitality will make your trip unforgettable.

Newfoundland has overhauled the way it hires private agency nurses, in the wake of a Globe and Mail investigation that raised questions about the costs and billing practices associated with a Toronto company that supplied out-of-province temporary nurses in Atlantic Canada.

New standards unveiled by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) include preset hourly rates, tighter rules for expense claims and the abolition of meal allowances.

Details were outlined in a request for proposals NLHS posted Wednesday on MERX, the online bidding platform for government procurement contracts.

Newfoundland didn’t rely heavily on temporary nurses, also known as travel nurses, until the pandemic worsened staff shortages. As a result, in 2022, two of the province’s health regions signed sole-sourced contracts with Canadian Health Labs (CHL), under an emergency exemption clause allowing officials to skip the regular bidding process.

CHL charged up to $283.63 an hour for general registered nurses and $312.25 for specialty nurses, roughly six times what a staff nurse typically earns in the public system.

Newfoundland, eager to shed dependency on expensive travel nurses, launches program for rural communities

According to bidding documents posted on MERX, Newfoundland has a standing offer to hire private agency nurses for a two-year term, with the option to extend for another two years. NLHS will pay a $110 hourly rate for registered nurses and $125 for specialty nurses.

The new fee structure also caps travel expense claims at $1,500 for an individual’s return trip. A Globe review of CHL invoices found that the company asked to be reimbursed for sums as high as $5,349 for an individual nurse’s one-way travel to Newfoundland.

Furthermore, NLHS will no longer provide per diems. The Globe investigation found that CHL invoiced Newfoundland for more than $2.2-million in daily meal allowances for its nurses while telling its workers that they had to pay for their own food. The company has not answered requests to explain the discrepancy.

In a statement, NLHS human resources vice-president Debbie Molloy said that the new standards, which also include using a list of approved agencies, will ensure provincewide consistency when contracting private health care staff.

The MERX post said that, while the short-term focus of the bid is hiring agency nurses, “other health care professionals could also be considered over time.”

Union leaders criticized the new standards, saying that they further cement the reliance on private providers in the public health care system.

“We have been here before. Time and time again the government tries to implement the privatization of our public services under the guise of saving money or streamlining services,” Jerry Earle, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees, whose members include 11,000 front-line health care workers said in a statement sent to The Globe.

Newfoundland’s Comptroller-General to probe whether private nursing contracts were fulfilled

Yvette Coffey, president of the Registered Nurses’ Union Newfoundland & Labrador, said the new arrangements will only benefit private agencies. “This is the wrong direction and is the exact opposite of the promise of NLHS to have a plan to phase out private agency nurses. This standardization plan that NLHS is now announcing will entrench the use of private agency nurses and erode our public health care system,” she said in a statement.

CHL’s two nursing agreements in Newfoundland expired this spring. Provincial Auditor-General Denise Hanrahan is now investigating contracts between private vendors and the province’s health sector, citing The Globe’s reporting on the CHL nursing deals.

CHL also signed three contracts in New Brunswick, which have been reviewed by the province’s Auditor-General Paul Martin. His report released in June was critical of the exorbitant fees, questionable invoices and lack of oversight associated with those arrangements.

CHL didn’t respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. The company has said in past statements that its contracts feature “competitive hourly rates,” are “fair and transparent” and reflect the “extraordinary logistical challenges” of recruiting and retaining health care workers in rural Canada
