Iowa Lt. Gov Adam Gregg resigns in surprise announcement

Portrait of Stephen Gruber-Miller

Iowa Lieutenant Gov. Adam Gregg resigned his position effective immediately Tuesday to take a job leading the Iowa Bankers Association, he said in a surprise announcement.

Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying Gregg would be resigning immediately "to pursue a career opportunity that allows him to focus more on his family."

Later Tuesday afternoon, the Iowa Bankers Association announced that Gregg has been chosen as its new president and CEO.

Reynolds appointed Gregg as lieutenant governor after she assumed the governorship in 2017. He won election as her running mate in 2018 and 2022.

In a statement, Gregg, a Republican, said serving alongside Reynolds for seven years "has been a great honor."

Sign-up for Your Vote: Text with the USA TODAY elections team.

"However, as Scripture reminds us, for everything there is a season, and there is a time to every purpose under heaven," Gregg, 41, said in the statement. "I feel my time in public service must come to a close. This season of my life needs to be focused on my family. My kids are growing up too fast, and statewide elected offices force me to miss more of their lives than I can accept. While difficult, the decision to resign from this role allows me to honor my most important commitment ― my family."

Reynolds praised Gregg for his service to the state and to his family.

"Adam has been a tremendous partner and an important part of my team over the last seven years, and I greatly appreciate his service to Iowans," Reynolds said in a statement. "It comes as no surprise that he would choose to step down to prioritize his personal life. Adam is a devoted husband and father, and there is nothing more important to him than his family. Even as lieutenant governor, he has made time to coach his young son and daughter, be involved at their school, and participate together in church activities. This most certainly is the right decision for Adam, and I wish him, Cari and their children only the best."

Under Iowa law, the governor has the power to appoint a new lieutenant governor to fill the vacancy for the remainder of Gregg's term.

Until Reynolds appoints a new lieutenant governor, Senate President Amy Sinclair, a Republican from Allerton, is next in Iowa's line of succession.

Gregg, of Hawarden, is an attorney who served as Iowa's state public defender before being appointed lieutenant governor in 2017. He ran unsuccessfully for attorney general in 2014.

In a statement, he said he is excited to join the Iowa Bankers Association.

“In my time as lieutenant governor, I found that for every good thing happening in our state, there was an Iowa bank backing it," he said. "Now I have the great honor to represent this industry, which is so critical to Iowa’s success."

Iowa Bankers Association Chair Mary Kay Bates praised Gregg for his work building local communities as lieutenant governor.

"He is a person of great integrity who, like our member banks, has demonstrated a commitment to making Iowa a better place to live, work and bank," she said in a statement.

Iowa's elected officials thanked Gregg for his service Tuesday.

"I want to thank Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg for his years of service to the people of Iowa," State Auditor Rob Sand, a Democrat, said in a statement. "He was always capable of seeing past disagreements to focus on places to work together."

Attorney General Brenna Bird called Gregg "the epitome of what it means to be a leader."

"I have nothing but admiration for the incredible work Adam has done to move our state forward & his decision to focus on his family at this time," Bird said in a statement. "I am grateful to have served Iowans alongside my friend Adam, and I have no doubt that he will continue to impact the lives of many in his future endeavors."

House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst, D-Windsor Heights, also thanked Gregg for his service.

"Time with family is precious, and I hope he’s able to enjoy more time without the constraints of statewide elected office," she wrote on social media .

Gov. Reynolds announces Lt. Governor Adam Gregg is leaving position to focus on family

  • Tuesday, September 3, 2024
  • Press Release

Gov. Kim Reynolds today announced that Lt. Governor Adam Gregg is stepping down from his position to pursue a career opportunity that allows him to focus more on his family.

“Adam has been a tremendous partner and an important part of my team over the last seven years, and I greatly appreciate his service to Iowans,” remarked Governor Reynolds. “It comes as no surprise that he would choose to step down to prioritize his personal life. Adam is a devoted husband and father, and there is nothing more important to him than his family. Even as lieutenant governor, he has made time to coach his young son and daughter, be involved at their school, and participate together in church activities. This most certainly is the right decision for Adam, and I wish him, Cari and their children only the best.”

“It has been a great honor to serve alongside Governor Reynolds for seven years. I have enormous respect for her and her leadership, and she will always be one of the most important mentors in my life. I don’t have the words to express the profound gratitude I feel toward Governor Reynolds,” Lt. Governor Adam Gregg stated.

“However, as Scripture reminds us, for everything there is a season, and there is a time to every purpose under heaven. I feel my time in public service must come to a close. This season of my life needs to be focused on my family. My kids are growing up too fast, and statewide elected offices force me to miss more of their lives than I can accept. While difficult, the decision to resign from this role allows me to honor my most important commitment – my family.”

Gov. Reynolds named Adam Gregg acting lieutenant governor in May 2017 when she succeeded Gov. Terry Branstad after he was named U.S. Ambassador to China. The two have since been elected to two terms in office, in 2018 and 2022.

His resignation is effective today, September 3, 2024.

Under Iowa Code, the governor makes an appointment to fill a vacancy in the office of the lieutenant governor, and the appointee serves for the balance of the unexpired term. Until Gov. Reynolds makes an appointment later this fall, the president of the Senate will be next in line of succession.

Iowa lieutenant governor resigns to take over state lobby group representing bankers

Iowa Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg is resigning after serving more than seven years in office to take the helm of the state’s bankers association

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg resigned his position Tuesday after serving more than seven years in office to take the helm of the state's bankers association.

Gregg said in a statement that “my time in public service must come to a close.” Also Tuesday, the Iowa Bankers Association announced Gregg as their incoming president and CEO, effective Oct. 1.

“In my time as lieutenant governor, I found that for every good thing happening in our state, there was an Iowa bank backing it," he said. “Now I have the great honor to represent this industry, which is so critical to Iowa’s success.”

Gov. Kim Reynolds initially announced the resignation, saying in a statement that the 41-year-old Republican “has been a tremendous partner” and is pursuing “a career opportunity that allows him to focus more on his family."

Iowa law states that the governor shall appoint someone to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Reynolds indicated that she will do so “later this fall.” For now, Iowa Senate President Amy Sinclair, a Republican representing a south central district, is next in the line of succession.

The Iowa Bankers Association advocates for its members with state and local governments and has been led for 28 years by John Sorensen, who is stepping down this year.

The new job is likely to come with a significant pay increase for Gregg, whose salary remained by law at $103,212 throughout his tenure.

Sorensen received a total compensation package valued at more than $620,000 in 2022, the banking group’s most recent tax filing shows.

Reynolds, who was former Gov. Terry Branstad’s lieutenant governor, appointed Gregg to the position in May 2017, when Branstad was named U.S. ambassador to China and Reynolds became governor. The Republican ticket was elected to a full term in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.

Gregg was the Republican nominee for attorney general in 2014 but lost to incumbent Democrat Tom Miller. He was then appointed by Branstad to serve as state public defender.

In his statement, Gregg said he needs to be focused on his family, which includes his wife and two children who are “growing up too fast,” he said.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cade McNamara threw three second-half touchdown passes and No. 25 Iowa cruised to a season-opening victory without coach Kirk Ferentz, pounding Illinois State 40-0 on Saturday.

Ferentz served a one-game suspension imposed by the university for a recruiting contact violation that is under investigation by the NCAA. Assistant head coach Seth Wallace ran the team in his absence. It was the first game Ferentz had missed in his 26 seasons as the Hawkeyes’ coach.

“What they did today, under these circumstances, was pretty cool,” Wallace said of the Hawkeyes.

McNamara, who missed the final nine games of last season with a knee injury, threw touchdown passes of 7 and 19 yards to freshman wide receiver Reece Vander Zee. He also tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Jacob Gill to help the Hawkeyes pull away after leading 6-0 at halftime.

“The first half was just the norms of the first game,” Wallace said. “The second half is probably a better indicator of what kind of team we are.”

McNamara said the second half was built on Iowa's last possession of the first half, when the Hawkeyes went 49 yards in 10 plays to set up Drew Stevens' second field goal of the game.

“I think we really started gain some momentum at the end of that second quarter, when we were able to go on a decent drive,” McNamara said. “We weren’t able to finish with a touchdown. When stuff wasn’t going our way at the beginning, our tempo wasn’t very good. And I think once we were able to gain some momentum and gain some tempo, that set us up really good for the second half.”

Vander Zee, who was a quarterback in high school last year, was one of McNamara's main targets, finishing with five catches for a game-high 66 yards. He became the first true freshman in program history to have a touchdown catch in his first game since Dominique Douglas in 2006.

“I kind of never have really been a guy to get nervous,” Vander Zee said. “I just kind of trust my preparation, and go out there and have fun.”

Kaleb Johnson rushed for 119 yards for Iowa, including touchdown runs of 64 and 18 yards in the fourth quarter.

McNamara, who completed eight consecutive passes to open the second half, finished 21-of-31 passing for 251 yards. He also had one carry for 12 yards, and had a 20-yard scramble in the first half called back because of a penalty.

“Today felt really good to be actually healthy and run around a little bit,” said McNamara, who suffered a quadricep injury during training camp last season. “I wasn’t expected to run as much as I did today, but it felt good. And you know, some confidence was built with that.”

It was the first game for new Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who is taking over a unit that finished last in the nation in total offense last season and averaged just 15.4 points per game, which ranked 129th out of 130 FBS teams.

Iowa posted 147 yards of total offense in the first half, but it had 180 yards and 11 first downs in the third quarter. The Hawkeyes finished the game with 492 yards of total offense.

Iowa’s defense held Illinois State to 189 yards, sacking Tommy Rittenhouse four times. Rittenhouse was 10-of-20 passing for 119 yards.

“Where the game was lost, in my opinion, was in the first half,” Illinois State coach Brock Spack said. “Iowa made some mistakes with penalties and and so forth. And we weren’t able to to come back and make some plays. We did some great things in the first half, but we we needed a little help."

BIG PICTURE

There were plenty of questions surrounding Iowa’s offense, and McNamara, heading into the season, and the second half provided some answers. Granted, it came against an FCS team, but it was an important first step of the season for the Hawkeyes, who host Iowa State next week.
