Do you dream of managing tourist attractions, hotels and resorts, or want to work in events management? Accredited by the Institute of Hospitality, our International Hospitality and Tourism Management degree will set you on course to enter a variety of sought-after careers in these dynamic sectors.

With the hospitality, tourism and events industries increasingly focusing on international visitors and technological developments, there is huge demand for managers who understand these sectors and how to tailor services for global visitors. Our hospitality and tourism course will give you a strong foundation of knowledge and skills across these areas. As you progress, you will be able to start forging your career in your preferred sector by studying an extensive range of specialist subjects, covering everything from gastronomy or bar management to strategic management or creating event experiences.

To help you put your learning into practice in the real world, you will have the chance to spend a year on a paid work placement, with exciting opportunities in the UK and around the globe. Studying at a recognised Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) Centre of Excellence, you will also have further opportunities to network and liaise with industry, as well as the chance to hone your hospitality management skills right on campus in our award-winning restaurant facilities.

Core Modules

Hospitality Principles and Practice

It is essential that service providers understand the needs and wants of their customers. In order to be successful we need to identify who our customer is and what their characteristics are. This module will provide practical training in our award-winning restaurant and bar as well as examining the customer journey and developing trends.

Digital Hotel and Resort Management

Hotels and resorts are a very important, challenging and one of the largest sectors of the hospitality and tourism industry. This module aims to develop your understanding and skills for how to efficiently manage rooms operations through each stage of the guest journey. The module explores contemporary digital technologies to enhance guest experience and includes practical sessions where you will gain proficiency in one of the world’s leading property management systems.

International Organisational Management Skills

This module introduces you to the competencies required by managers in the international business environment, while developing your skills in critical areas of personal effectiveness and relationship management. Through the use of international case studies and contemporary management theory, you will reflect on organisational structures, individual and group behaviour, responsiveness in changing business situations and the influence global trends have on the increasing ‘connectedness’ of organisations and people in a cross-cultural environment.

Dynamic Tourism Environment

This module will examine the dynamic nature of the global tourism environment and the response strategies of tourism businesses. Critical themes include the changing nature of the tourism industry and consumers, safety and security, digital technology, the ability to travel ‘freely’ (or not) around the world and how businesses are striving to implement more effective sustainable tourism policies. This module will enhance your employability skills with a focus on data trend analyses, industry audits and the identification of critical challenges and best practice across the sector.

Work Placement

Work Placement (optional)

You will gain valuable work experience on a 48-week work placement. This is an exciting opportunity to put what you have learned into practice, broaden your experience and demonstrate your abilities to potential employers.

Revenue and Profitability Management

In this module, you will develop skills in the interpretation and analysis of financial and management data to positively influence profitability and cash flows. You will build your understanding of the critical aspects of delivering profitable hospitality and tourism businesses. You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of these principles in an innovative hospitality and tourism management simulation. The simulation will support learning, and you will critically evaluate the impact of your decisions on the creation of revenues, efficient use of costs controls, maximisation of profits and viability of cash flows.

Marketing and Social Media Management

The hospitality and tourism industry faces a huge challenge in terms of adapting and promoting services in an interconnected world. Marketing is essential for any business to remain competitive and successful, so you will examine the use of marketing tools. You will examine the tactics, strategies and ways that marketing managers use social media communications to secure business.

Resource and Talent Management

Within this ever-changing and dynamic business environment, now more than ever before, organisations must be able to assemble teams of people with the necessary skills, attitudes and behaviours to meet their business objectives. To this end, our managers will need to be actively involved in recruiting, engaging, developing and retaining the right talent. Taking an inclusive perspective, all employees have the potential to make a real contribution to the achievement of the business, and therefore talent management of all staff must be a key management focus.

Gastronomy is the study of the relationship between culture and food. As a module developed for food lovers it will provide you with an appreciation of food within various cultures. Also, current trends and food issues such as sustainable practices and how they impact the industry today and into the future will be studied.

Dynamic Events and Experience Management

You will explore the dynamic nature of the events industry and experience economy, the importance of effective stakeholder management, policy-related issues, contemporary event trends and the overall role of events for tourism and destination development. Event impacts will be analysed and event typologies will also be reviewed. Based upon well-established models, you will gain a sound understanding of planning and designing event experiences within the contemporary environment, as well as the effective implementation and evaluation of event projects.

Managing Bars and the Night-time Economy

The bar sector and night-time economy offer some of the hospitality industry’s most dynamic and challenging operating environments. This module evaluates a range of both the more traditional aspects of bar-retailing, such as ensuring profitability through inspirational management while operating within the scope of current licensing regulations, and exciting opportunities now being presented by digital technologies in enhancing both the customer experience and operational efficiency.

Tourism Operations and Innovation

Providing a competitive visitor experience, while generating profits, is the ultimate performance goal for tourism operators. This becomes increasingly challenging in a very competitive and dynamic environment. Accordingly, tourism operators must seek innovative solutions to performance gaps to ensure long-term success. This module will examine the current practices of tourism operators in terms of revenue management, capacity management and offering an outstanding visitor experience. The above will develop essential professional and employability skills.

Independent Research Project

This module provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities in researching, planning and delivering an industry-related macro or micro-based project independently. You can either self-select your own topic or choose from a list of contemporary industry projects. This project focuses on cultivating the desired graduate attributes of professionalism, critical enquiry, problem solving, enterprise, creativity and innovation and in enhancing your professional profile to enrich and facilitate independent learning and development for graduate career opportunities.

Strategic Financial Management

In this module, you will build upon both practical and theoretical financial concepts developed through earlier modules. You will gain commercial awareness and understanding of strategic organisational finance and will learn how to synthesise and evaluate business performance and strategy.

In an increasingly fast-paced and changing global environment, it is more important than ever that a business can navigate its way to a successful future. This module will evaluate different strategic change management tools in supporting businesses to seize new opportunities and treat risks/threats.

Business Process Improvement

This module provides you with the ability to identify how a process within the business can be improved. A process is a sequence of activities that takes an input and transforms it into an output. Activities consume time and other resources. One way to improve performance is to redesign processes so that they consume less time and resources.

Tourism Trends and Futures

This module will review tourism trends and strategic challenges facing destinations as they strive for sustainable competitive advantage and future-proofing their offer. Various macro forces continue to influence the strategic direction of destinations with new risks and opportunities arising. Destinations are implementing more inclusive and sustainable strategies to navigate their way through a more turbulent environment. But the question remains, can they successfully future-proof themselves? You will develop your professional skills and knowledge in destination management, trend/data analysis and strategic management of destinations.

Global Expansion Strategies

This module complements the international dimension of the programme and aims to promote the complexities and issues hospitality and tourism organisations face when attempting to enter overseas markets to seek growth globally. Hospitality and tourism organisations increasingly seek to operate outside of their own boundaries in diverse and less understood market environments. Management skills are required to successfully exploit new overseas market opportunities through the use of both traditional channels and new media opportunities to deliver integrated marketing strategies offered by the latest innovative technological developments.

Admission Requirements

The hospitality and tourism management master’s degree at UCF accepts applications three times throughout the year: fall, spring and summer. You must apply online and submit all requested materials by the established deadline.

The typical candidate:

  • Is a professional working in a position related to hospitality, tourism or events.
  • Holds an undergraduate degree in hospitality, business management or a related discipline.
  • Understands that advanced educational training is required to be competitive in the thriving hospitality, tourism and event industry.

Admission is restricted each semester to individuals showing high promise of success in postgraduate studies. In addition to the requirements, other indicators of promise include the applicant’s extracurricular activities, work experience, job responsibilities and leadership experience, which will be considered in making admissions decisions.

To apply, submit the general graduate admissions requirements , as well as the following items by the deadline:

  • One official transcript (in a sealed envelope) from each college/university attended
  • Goal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • The GRE/GMAT is not required, however, the Admissions Committee may ask for the GRE/GMAT to strengthen a candidate’s application package.

A maximum of three credit hours of restricted elective may be taken as an independent study.

International students (F or J visa) are required to enroll in a full-time course load of 9 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. Program Prerequisites

For students with undergraduate majors in Hospitality Management or Business Administration, there will be no undergraduate course prerequisites, provided they have successfully completed an undergraduate course in statistics or applied quantitative analysis with a grade of "C" or higher.

For industry professionals with an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than Hospitality Management or Business Administration, the following two undergraduate courses "may" be required to be completed with a grade of "B" or higher within the first year of coursework in the program (decisions are made at the discretion of the Graduate Recruitment Team).

The History of Hospitality & Tourism 

Hospitality is one of the oldest businesses, going way back to the innkeepers and taverns of biblical times. Tourism, on the other hand, is a more recent invention which began in Europe, with Switzerland being one of the first countries to develop special accommodation and services for travelers. 

In the late 1800’s, the concept of leisure tourism and hospitality spread across Europe, bringing flocks of wealthy travelers to Switzerland. It began with visitors seeking cultural and natural exposure on guided tours in the Swiss Alps, train rides and wellness tourism. Palace-style hotels, thermal baths and ski resorts became icons of luxury tourism in Switzerland.

This new generation of wealthy guests had higher expectations for comfortable accommodations, convenient services and fine dining. The leisure travel phenomenon gave birth to hospitality management schools: EHL was founded as the first hotel management school in 1893 in Lausanne, and it has pioneered in hospitality management education since then.

Hospitality is one of the most resilient, adaptable and dynamic industries on the planet. It is an industry of constant change, where technology and innovation are being integrated to improve the guest experience.

How to Study Hospitality Management

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests.

The art and science of hosting strangers is an essential skill for people working in many kinds of businesses, including airlines, casinos, cruise ships, festivals, hotels and restaurants.

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests. Cultivating that marketable skill set is the goal of associate, bachelor's and graduate programs in hospitality management.

What a Hospitality Management Degree Is and What Classes It Requires

The goal of any course of study in hospitality management is to train people to create and maintain spaces where others will immediately feel at home.

“Understanding how to take care of the customer is a foundational aspect of the hospitality discipline,” Angela Ramsey, senior director of communication at the University of Nevada—Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, explained in an email.

Hospitality management degrees are, foremost, degrees in business, says Michael Sabitoni, chair of the food and beverage management department and the international travel and tourism studies department at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. They include classes in accounting, finance, human resources, law and technology, he says.

However, unlike a general business degree, a hospitality degree typically includes specialized coursework focusing on the hospitality industry, such as classes on food service business operations, event management principles, and hotel and resort leadership, Sabitoni says. An overview class about tourism is also typically included in hospitality management programs, and industry internships are often mandatory, he adds.

Many hospitality degree programs require students to participate in experiential learning by helping to operate a student-run hotel or restaurant. They may also contain classes on:

  • Eco-tourism or sustainable travel
  • Global tourism and special considerations involved with international trips
  • Customer service protocols
  • Assessing the quality of guest experiences
  • Specific types of hospitality establishments, such as country clubs, golf courses, resorts, stadiums, timeshares or theme parks
  • Nuances involved in planning certain kinds of events, such as conventions or weddings
  • Concerns that face certain demographics of customers, including women and people of color
  • Various types of tourism, including business trips and visits to cultural destinations or historical sites

Top Undergraduate Schools With Hospitality Management Majors

Many U.S. colleges and universities allow undergraduates to major in hospitality management, including multiple nationally renowned academic institutions. Cornell University of New York, an Ivy League college, has a school devoted to hospitality.

Exceptional hospitality programs are often based in major metropolitan areas that attract significant tourism. For example, New York University and Boston University in Massachusetts offer a hospitality management degree.

How to Know if a Hospitality Management Degree Is Right for You

An interest in the food and beverage sector, a love for travel or an interest in entertaining people may lead someone to consider pursuing a degree in hospitality management. But prospective students should be aware that the hospitality sector has leadership roles for people with all kinds of interests and personalities.

Though some managerial positions in the hospitality industry are customer-facing jobs that require significant people skills, there are also back-of-the-house managerial jobs that concentrate on logistics, Sabitoni says.

Significant cultural awareness and strong communication abilities are essential in hospitality. Foreign language skills are also valuable but not mandatory, Sabitoni says.

What You Can Do With a Hospitality Management Degree

Hospitality programs are designed to train future leaders in the sector.

“It can include anything within the hospitality vertical, from hotel investment companies to real estate firms to our big brands which are the Marriotts, the Hiltons, the Four Seasons, to data analytics companies to Googles to Amazons,” says Kate Walsh, dean of the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell. “Anything that touches hospitality as a part of their business product is something where our students get involved.”

Real estate investment firms often invest in hotel buildings, so people with degrees in hospitality management sometimes find jobs in the real estate sector, Walsh says. Alumni of hospitality management programs sometimes become management consultants who concentrate on assisting companies in the hospitality industry, she adds.

Executive and director roles in the industry typically require at least a bachelor's degree. Many high-level leadership positions at U.S. hospitality firms pay annual salaries above $70,000, according to an article published by Monster.com, a job website.

In 2020, graduates of Cornell's Nolan School had an average base salary of slightly over $69,000 and an average bonus of nearly $15,000, according to the school's employment report .

Considerations for Potential Hospitality Students

Aspiring hospitality managers should be aware of trends that may affect them when they enter the industry, experts say.

This sector has severe labor shortages at hotels and restaurants, many of which laid off workers due to pandemic-related safety measures and now have struggled to replace those workers even after raising wages.

Because of these staffing concerns, many hospitality companies have introduced initiatives to recruit and retain talented staff, improve working conditions, increase job satisfaction and reduce employee turnover, Walsh says.

When comparing hospitality programs, prospective students should investigate whether those programs include experiential learning opportunities, experts say, noting that hands-on projects are one of the best ways to gain hospitality skills. It’s also optimal if hospitality schools offer courses on design, which can inform aesthetic choices about how a hospitality venue looks, according to experts.

“I think the industry needs innovative thinkers," Walsh says. "They need people who think big culturally, who are comfortable with different modes of work, so it’s a great time to join the industry. The industry is trying to be extremely intentional in providing compelling career paths.”

Brief History

The International Hospitality and Tourism College (IHTC) is a division of the Suriname College of Hospitality and Tourism College, which was founded in 2002 to meet the urgent need for skilled and qualified personnel and higher vocational education in the hospitality and tourism sector. The establishment of the College created new learning and employment opportunities and mitigated the impact of the ongoing brain drain to a certain extent.

The College is registered with the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and with the Chamber of Commerce in Paramaribo, and the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) as a tertiary educational institution. In response to the articulated need for well-rounded managers in this sector the College started the Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Hospitality and Tourism Management, which was accredited by the UCJ in 2010. The preparations for re-accreditation are in progress.

Over the years the College established important links with first-class local, regional, and international organizations that provide courses, internship opportunities and employment for the students. Between 2003 and 2017 the College became a member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, and signed academic partnership agreements with the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute, the Customer Service Academy of Jamaica, and the American Hospitality Academy, which contributed to the growth of the College.

Ideally, our international B.B.A. Program in Hotel & Tourism Management can be completed by studying full-time in a four-year academic period. During the first two years of study, international students will fulfill their general education, information technology (IT), and language degree requirements. During the third and fourth years of study, international students complete their core coursework and electives as well as obtain professional work experience. In total, international students must complete 126 credits of coursework to graduate.

Over the next decade, the international hotel and tourism industry is forecast to maintain its position as the world’s largest employer and the world’s largest provider of management positions. HTMi’s role is to prepare students for a management career in this, the most exciting industry today. HTMi is supported by a world-wide network of international hotel companies, whose representatives regularly visit HTMi to recruit on campus. The realisation of htmi’s vision is enhanced through its five centres for excellence:, the school of international hotel and tourism management, the international hospitality research centre switzerland, the international centre for events management training switzerland, the centre for culinary management switzerland, the centre for career management.

The School of International Hotel and Tourism Management provides high-quality education, training and work internships to all students.

Students gain Swiss-style diplomas for education and for training, followed by a Bachelor or MBA degree from universities with a long-standing tradition for excellence in degree-level education, all taught in English.

The Bachelor BSc (Hons) Degree is validated and awarded by Ulster University and the MSc Degree is validated and awarded by Edinburg Napier University. HTMi is accredited and recognized formally as a Higher Education Institution with EduQua, the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS) and the British Accreditation Council (BAC). The BAC is a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance (ENQA). All undergraduate programmes and the MSc are accredited by the Institute of Hospitality.

The International Hospitality Research Centre Switzerland, at HTMi, is unique in Switzerland and is an excellent example of HTMi leading in research and Innovation. At HTMi, research is a key part of all courses and the Institute has its own international research journal: The International Hospitality and Tourism Student Journal. Research is a key part of developing students’ analytical skills, that are essential to be an excellent future manager in the international hotel and tourism industry.

The Centre for Events Management Training Switzerland provides all students with a focus on training in various aspects of hotel events management. The importance of this relates to the very large revenue and profit from events in a hotel organisation. On campus, each semester, there are a large number of events at all levels, including conferences, weddings and culinary events. The Centre also organizes groups of students to work at, and support, major international events like the Olympics. The Centre also organizes groups of students to work at, and support, VIP events around Switzerland.

The Centre for Culinary Management Switzerland focuses on equipping students with the required skills and knowledge to operate within a kitchen environment, develop recipes and operate within the a la carte and banqueting restaurants, on campus, at HTMi.  There is a special focus on European Baking and Pastry Arts, and the Centre has its own online Culinary TV, as well as an online recipe book, with many examples of excellence in culinary arts. There is a special focus on Swiss European Baking, Pastry and Culinary Arts and the Centre has its own online Culinary TV.

The Centre for Career Management at HTMi connects with all major international hotel companies and places students around the world. The Centre organises international hotel company recruitment events on campus, career trips for award-winning students to leading hotel centres around the world and provides job searching skills and support for all students and graduates. The centre also organizes work internships in Switzerland for all HTMi students.
