El Tour de Tucson is one of America’s most prestigious cycling events, drawing thousands of cyclists nationwide. Held annually in Tucson, Arizona, this event offers a challenging and scenic route that showcases the region’s beauty. With its rich history and strenuous routes, El Tour de Tucson has become a must-attend event for cycling enthusiasts.

Routes El Tour de Tucson features four major races, including the renowned “Century Race,” which covers a challenging 102-mile route. The race begins at the Tucson Convention Center and loops south and east, offering riders a diverse and picturesque landscape.

The route takes cyclists through stunning vistas, including the scenic Green Valley and Sahuarita, before concluding in downtown Tucson. Each leg of the race presents its challenges, from steep inclines to winding descents, testing the endurance and skill of every rider.

History First established in 1983, El Tour de Tucson has grown into one of the premier cycling events in the United States. Over the years, it has attracted top cyclists and cycling enthusiasts alike, all eager to test their mettle against the challenging terrain of southern Arizona. The event has also become a platform for charity, with participants raising funds for various causes, further solidifying its status as a community-focused event.

2023 Winner of El Tour de Tucson The 40th annual El Tour de Tucson witnessed more than 9,000 cyclists converge in Tucson to participate in this prestigious event. Among them, 26-year-old Noah Anastassatos of Scottsdale emerged victorious in the grueling 102-mile “Century Race.” Anastassatos crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 27 seconds, showcasing his skill and determination.

The race starts at the Tucson Convention Center and takes riders on a challenging route encompassing southern Arizona’s scenic beauty. Anastassatos’ victory was hard-earned, as he faced stiff competition from over 50 cyclists vying for the top spot. A late crash near Nogales Highway added to the drama, creating opportunities for Anastassatos and other riders to make their move toward victory.

In addition to the Century Race, El Tour de Tucson featured other races of varying lengths, catering to cyclists of all skill levels. News 4 Tucson’s Robbie Reynold participated in the 32-mile race, finishing a respectable 54th out of 1,231 riders with a time of 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 42 seconds.

El Tour de Tucson is not just about the thrill of the race; it’s also about the community and camaraderie among cyclists. 'Shameful': Some AZ counties certify primary election results amid drama

Portrait of Sasha Hupka

Several of Arizona’s most populous counties certified primary election results on Monday, but not entirely without drama.

In Pinal County, sandwiched between Phoenix and Tucson, county supervisors unanimously approved vote tallies. But Supervisor Kevin Cavanaugh said he did so "under duress" and believed the results were "incorrect" — an allegation that Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Goodman called "false."

The two went back and forth during the meeting and at times shouted over each other, with Goodman occasionally gaveling down Cavanaugh.

"This is a shameful situation here today — shameful," Goodman said. "This is a clown show. We have one duty, to canvass these votes, and we can't hardly get it done."

Cavanaugh, a former police officer, ran for county sheriff as a Republican. He lost his primary to Pinal County Sheriff's Office Lt. Ross Teeple, according to unofficial results. Pinal County Recorder Dana Lewis defended the results of the primary in a statement to The Arizona Republic.

"The important work of the Pinal County elections department on behalf of the people of our county, will not be distracted by efforts of those who trade in the well-worn and ridiculous narrative that election staff are somehow influencing the outcome of a race in a facility built for transparency and staff dedicated to the accuracy of the outcomes," she said.

Maricopa County supervisors also unanimously voted to certify results. There, officials have faced a wave of election denialism that has resulted in continuous threats and harassment . A handful of public speakers took the podium Monday to express doubts about election processes and results, most part of a crowd of skeptics who appear often at the county's meetings.

The incidents offer a precursor to how local officials might handle the key certification process come November. The canvass of election results was once a mundane affair, but is now highly watched after several GOP-controlled counties in Arizona and nationwide flirted with the idea of refusing to perform the duty in 2022. Republican supervisors in Cochise County, which encompasses a rural area of southeastern Arizona, only canvassed midterms results after a court order .

In most counties, the certification process went smoothly for primary election results. Vote tallies were certified uneventfully in Cochise County last week. Supervisors in Mohave County, a Republican stronghold where officials previously considered hand counting results, voted unanimously to canvass results on Thursday. Officials in Pima County unanimously voted to certify results on Monday morning.

In Pinal County, Cavanaugh claims 'obvious errors' in election

During Pinal County's chaotic certification meeting, Cavanaugh attempted to hand out copies of a 21-page document that he claimed showed "mathematical problems" and "statistical problems" in the results of several local elections — including his own.

The document includes the results of a statistical analysis performed by Cavanaugh, his wife, his administrative assistant and Jisan Nuren, who the report calls "field-educated in statistical analysis and the use of statistical software." The man appears to be a data analyst for hire on Fiverr, an online freelance services marketplace. His profile states that he aims to create "interesting tales from your data" and includes a recent positive review from a client with the username "kevincavanau856."

The report alleges statistical abnormalities in Republican primaries for county assessor, attorney, sheriff and several supervisor seats. It notes that Cavanaugh saw little correlation between his campaign advertising activities and election results. It also makes claims of "cheating" in the election and "hush-money payments" made to an election employee.

It isn't the first time Cavanaugh has made controversial accusations. In March, he threatened to sue his colleagues, alleging Recorder Dana Lewis had defamed him and could not be trusted overseeing elections . Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer said his office investigated the allegations and found them to be entirely unsubstantiated .

In May, two Pinal County employees  settled a lawsuit accusing Cavanaugh of spreading retaliatory, false rumors for $40,000 . The settlement came after an independent investigation commissioned by Pinal County found  Cavanaugh made complaints of employee quid pro quo in the Pinal County Attorney's Office without any factual basis .Cavanaugh also has long been skeptical of elections. He has often questioned tabulators, the machines that tally votes on paper ballots, and has, at times, pushed for the county to hand count. He's been known to pepper election officials with questions at county meetings.

Lewis told The Republic that his statements during Monday's meeting were based on "erroneous assumptions and inaccurate mathematical conclusions."

"While none of the claims were fact checked or shared with the Recorders Office for accuracy prior to distribution, we have reviewed the assertions and found the faulty formulas," Lewis said. "The intentional distribution of blatantly false information is an insult to the public."

A complaint to the Attorney General's Office

Cavanaugh also filed a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General's Office, but a copy of his submission shows it only included one small part of the larger report he tried to distribute on Monday.

The complaint alleged Pinal County election officials may have prematurely released vote counts for individual candidates based on an email sent about a week before election day from Boots Hawks, a local GOP activist and member of the Casa Grande Union High School District Governing Board.

"Two of the candidates we're supporting are behind," the email read, encouraging conservatives to vote.

A spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office confirmed it received Cavanaugh's complaint, but declined to comment on whether the allegations would be investigated.

In Maricopa County, officials present to skeptical audience

Maricopa County's certification ceremony was also chaotic, but not because of arguments on the dais. Instead, the meeting was dominated by tension between elected officials and election skeptics in the audience.

Embattled Maricopa County officials used the meeting as an opportunity to lay out election processes, including ballot processing, vote tallying and recounts. They also noted that the primary went smoothly, with few lines, short wait times and no major technical problems reported from the polls.

But some public speakers still cast doubt on electoral processes. During a particularly dramatic moment, Barbara Hiatt said many countries had moved away from using tabulators to tally votes, including Russia and "the Middle Eastern countries."

"They've all gone away from the machines because of the fraud that takes place," Hiatt said.

Before she left the podium, Supervisor Tom Galvin, a Republican, asked if she had more confidence in Russian elections than American ones. She responded that she did, sparking a back-and-forth between Galvin and the audience.

"Are you kidding me? That is Putin propaganda," Galvin said.

County officials also previewed the potential for slow election night results in November . A new state law aims to speed up the vote counting process after Election Day, but a provision requiring poll workers to hand count early ballot envelopes dropped off at the polls slowed down results on primary night.

Elections Director Scott Jarrett said the county is expecting to see 300,000 to 400,000 early ballots dropped off on Election Day — at least a three-fold increase from the recent primary election.
