Review: STAR TREK IN CONCERT, Royal Albert Hall

pixeltracker

The franchise is now over 50 years old, spawning several TV and film series as well as garnering a collection of avid fans. These two films are from the recent reboot, known as the 'Kelvin timeline', which sees younger versions of the well-known characters launched into an alternate reality when a group of vengeful Romulans accidentally travel back in time through a singularity and change the course of history. Of the original cast, only Leonard Nimoy remains, playing the older Spock (or Spock Prime); 2009's Star Trek was the first in the franchise to completely recast established roles, beginning the story again for a new generation of viewers.

Both screenings were accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by the brilliant Ernst van Tiel, bringing award-winning composer Michael Giacchino's original scores to life below the big screen. Orchestral music might seem incongruous with science fiction, until you think of the long line of films and television programmes in this genre that rely on classical-style music to soundtrack the action - other iconic examples include Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind . Music and sound play a pivotal role in productions like these, whether it's blasting out "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys or heralding the arrival of the USS Enterprise, so screenings of this nature are often more like experiences than simply watching a film.

In a venue such as the Royal Albert Hall , it's comparable to an IMAX viewing thanks to the large screen and the acoustics of the place; it's effectively surround sound, and the volume and energy that come from live performance on musical instruments go right to your core. Hearing the original Star Trek theme (composed by Alexander Courage ) played out with the closing credits was spine-tingling on both occasions.

For Sunday's Star Trek Beyond screening, co-writer and star of the film Simon Pegg came to give a short introduction, arriving onstage to rapturous applause. "This film is very significant to me - not just because I'm in it!", said Pegg. It was a bit of a whirlwind writing period as everything had to be done very quickly and not following the usual process, resulting in "rages of Klingon intensity" as they raced to get it finished during pre-production. Whereas the first two films in the series were directed by J. J. Abrams , his Star Wars commitments meant Justin Lin took over the director's chair for this one, and Pegg said he couldn't speak highly enough about his time working with Lin.

Star Trek Beyond also marked one of the final screen performances of Anton Yelchin (Chekov) before he was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 27. The son of Russian figure skaters, Yelchin and his family relocated to the United States when he was still a baby, where he carved out an acting career from a young age. Pegg talked warmly of Yelchin, describing him as "an extraordinary human being" and usually the most intelligent person in the room, before dedicating Sunday's event to him and his parents (Viktor and Irina). His moments on-screen felt even more poignant following this touching tribute.

Review: STAR TREK IN CONCERT, Royal Albert Hall Image

A self-confessed Trekkie, Pegg couldn't resist taking a photo of everyone in the audience doing the Vulcan salute, bidding farewell with "Live long and prosper".

The Royal Albert Hall 's Star Trek weekend must go down as a resounding success, buoyed by incredibly enthusiastic audiences and standing ovations on both Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon; for the completists among us, it's a shame that Star Trek Into Darkness wasn't also included on the schedule, though it was previously performed there in 2014. These may have been special screenings, but should there be more in the future I recommend you "boldly go" and experience it for yourself.

The Festival of Science is at the Royal Albert Hall until 10 July

7 Reasons Why Star Trek With London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall Was Out of This World!

Jasmine Dotiwala

Producer, director, broadcaster, columnist

In the late seventies, as a kid, I recall my mother and aunts excitedly gathered around the television. As I pushed my way through the spirited bodies towards the bulky boxed TV, I was confused as I noted the show playing was Star Trek, and my mum wasn't exactly what you'd call a space head. It transpired that a new Indian/Persian actress named Persis Khambatta, was about to play bald Deltan woman Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and was on a talk show promoting the fact. In fact, so fascinated by this were we, that I even did my first ballet solo to the Ilia's Theme music at the local ballet school show later that year.

PIC- Courtesy Royal Albert Hall.

Ever since that time, I was an avid Star Trek viewer, mesmerised by the ability to explore the universe and my imagination ran wild with possibilities! So when I was offered a chance to attend one of my all time favourite venues the Royal Albert Hall to see Star Trek -The Ultiate Voyage, it was a Beam Me Up Scotty from me!

star trek royal albert hall

7 reasons why the world premiere of Star Trek with London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall was out of this world!

1-THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL IS THE BEST BADASS VENUES OF ALL TIME.

Seriously, just entering the hallowed doors of this heritage institute makes you feel you're in the presence of history. You know that a once in a lifetime memory is about to be had. Whether watching the annual Christmas runs of ballet, a proms concert or hip-hop show, this is the king of music venues with its stunning ceiling and acoustics. Its mushroom shaped flying saucers on the ceiling added to the futuristic theme of the afternoon. Watching Star Trek in the circular venue adds to the experience of being in Captain Kirks circular Enterprise ship front port. This theatrical magnificence is further enhanced, by the 70-foot film screen that we gaze at whilst watching the Enterprise crew gaze into theirs. A wonderful parallel world. I thought these events were a recent dreamt up phenomenon, but on further research it transpires that the RAH's first ever screening was on 21 October 1905! That's 91 years of fabulosity in the heart of west London.

2-TREKKIES ARE HARD-CORE.

Of the two most-loved and well-known science-fiction franchises, I was always more of STAR TREK kid than Star Wars. Some of the very best writers, artists, producers, actors, and directors and of course musicians contributed to Star Treks on-going legacy. I watched the initial William Shatner series with obsession, but then life got in the way so seeing five decades of Star Trek summed up in two hours was mind blowing, It made me realise just how much Star Trek I have not watched and need to catch up with! (although in my mind the real stories are only the ones with Kirk, Spock and Scotty in them) Especially as the fans, all dressed in their red, black and yellow uniforms sitting all around me, noted their appreciation for various characters and storylines that I was oblivious about. But whilst the storylines, uniforms and characters changed over five decades, the one overarching constant was the symphony orchestra, which helped us imagine we were soaring and exploring.

3-WITHOUT MUSIC THE UNIVERSE IS DOOMED.

When I religiously watched Star Trek as a kid, I was mesmerised by the final frontier and voyages of the Starship Enterprise that explored new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations and to boldly go where no-one has gone before. In 2016 when watching the action on the big screen at the RAH, and imagining the series from my childhood without its musical accompaniment, was painful. The sets are pretty basic and shaky...even when the enterprise hasn't collided into an alien ship. The graphics back then were pretty basic, but the acting was awesome considering they were never really teleported. It's the watching of the London Philharmonic Orchestra strike up that made me realise just how much the music score brings to the emotional engagement of the story. The 100-strong London philharmonic orchestra lead by conductor Justin Freer did the film score uber justice. In fact, just Google any of the Star Trek sound tracks. They stand alone as incredible works of classical music.

4-LEGENDS FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK WERE IN THE HOUSE.

Not only were composer/ guest conductors Ron Jones (Grammy and Emmy nominated composer, Family Guy, etc...) and Jay Chattaway in the crowd, but they actually also took the baton separately, to lead the orchestra at different points. Ron says ''I know that every note I put on the score paper mattered. How does one express the greatness of space? That is the challenge of creating this music''.

5-FORGET BAFTAS, HOUSE OF LORDS INVESTIGATIONS AND LENNY HENRY- LOOK TO STAR TREK FOR TRUE EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY.

Considering the Star Trek franchise was made from the seventies onwards, it's unreal that back then they had all ethnicities and nationalities appearing as regular staple characters on the Star Ship Enterprise. This was ground-breaking TV that won the hearts and minds of millions globally. Mainstream broadcasters today could learn a thing or two about great content and casting from Star Trek.

6-STAR TREKS ULTIMATE VOYAGE IS LONG!

A narrator led us for two hours through all five series; that's twelve films and 29 pieces of music. Scenes and montages with a variety of themes were edited to give the music context. Star Treks brand naturally lends itself to a variety of themes such as friendship (the love and loyalty between crew members), descent (when even space trotters had beef, Mr Spock and Captain Kirk forced to fight gladiator style in one episode!), the Starship Enterprise (its many journeys and adventures making it a part of the family), romance and more. Also it birthed numerous slanguage catchphrases like ''live long & prosper'', ''to boldly go where no-one has gone before'', ''warp drive'', ''alien life'' ''transporter''and more way before Apple hit our brand awareness radar.

7-ROYAL ALBERT HALL LIVE MOVIE/MUSIC EVENTS ALWAYS GIVE YOU MORE.

I've now attended a few of these incredible events. Great movies like Gladiator and Breakfast at Tiffany's, even the Pixar films. Whilst the orchestral element is mesmerizing in itself, at the end of each screening we are always treated to behind the scenes, archive photos and video slips from the days of making of the movie. Priceless!

In my humble opinion, orchestral music is the true star of these RAH events. It really has lived long and prospered throughout history and yet also feels so very futuristic.

You haven't lived unless you've seen and heard the Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage mission live at Royal Albert Hall. Soaring from light, ascending melodies to dark, apocalyptic scores, this unique event transported us to where none have gone before.

“To hear Michael Giacchino’s music, the secret weapon of the Star Trek series, performed live in the Royal Albert Hall, will be, I promise, a thrill,” J.J. Abrams said in a statement. “The full orchestra scoring sessions for the films have been among my favorite life experiences. To give the public a chance to hear this incredible music performed live is a wonderful thing. I cannot wait to go and celebrate Michael’s truly remarkable achievements!”

“In 2003, before I wrote my first film score, I saw John Williams conduct E.T. live to picture at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles,” Giacchino said in a separate statement. “I will never forget that event. A little over ten years later, I will have the honour of experiencing my music for Star Trek performed by the incredible 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of the talented conductor, Ludwig Wicki. That in itself is exciting, but the fact that we will be in the Royal Albert Hall in London, is truly amazing. After working with J.J. for 13 years, it will be so rewarding to have his wonderful films brought to life in a whole new way. I look forward to sharing this event with J.J. and the Star Trek fans, new and old.”

Star Trek Into Darkness Live in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall

Into Aural Amazingness

star trek royal albert hall

Of all the film scores that will likely go down in history - Pulp Fiction, The Graduate and Cabaret certainly among them - Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack for Star Trek Into Darkness probably won’t be on the list.

So it seemed an unlikely candidate for one of the Royal Albert Hall’s now famous ‘live’ concerts. Certainly on first seeing - and thoroughly enjoying - the movie, the music was rather ironically drowned out by Chris Pine’s quips, Zachary Quinto’s uncanny Leonard Nimoy impression, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s sexy malevolence. J.J. Abrams ' efforts might have been celebrated and acclaimed but Giacchino’s work was, frankly, indistinguishable from 100 other action movie scores. This, then, is where the magic of the Live in Concert series lies. Amid a crowd of film fans and die-hard Trekkies - some even proudly wearing costumes - we’re introduced to the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and Chorus who, over the coming two hours or so, will show us just how wrong we were. Conducted by Ludwig Wicki, himself appropriately clad during the second half in a classic science officer’s blue shirt, the orchestra weaved their way through Giacchino’s complex and compelling score as the film played on a giant screen above their heads. It’s a thoroughly engaging way to watch a film, as proved by the audience who were moved to loud whoops and rounds of applause at the film’s key points (Cumberbatch’s entrance and Nimoy’s cameo got the biggest cheer), inspiring a sense of camaraderie and fun rarely felt at the cinema.

The talented orchestra’s performance was, as far as we could tell, absolutely faultless, immersing us to the point where we almost forgot they were there and had to refocus our attention in order to properly appreciate such beautiful music being played in such a gorgeous setting. As if that weren’t treat enough, once the iconic Star Trek theme soared and the credits had rolled, Giacchino returned to the stage to lead a performance of a haunting melody from his latest score for this summer’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes . It’s a truly special experience, and with performances of West Side Story, The Godfather, Titanic and a show dedicated to the work of composer extraordinaire Danny Elfman over the next 12 months, we’ll be spending a lot of time at The Royal Albert Hall in the coming year.

Order in Klingon to win free tickets

The Royal Albert Hall has announced that Trekkies booking tickets in Klingon will be given the chance to win free tickets. The first 10 people to book in Klingon will win two tickets each to a screening of their choice. To enter, simply call the Royal Albert Hall Klingon Box Office on 020 7959 0597 after 10am on Friday, and order tickets in Klingon. You must also make sure to leave your name and phone number in English.

Royal Albert Hall Box Office staff have undertaken a crash course in Klingon. Lucy Noble, Artistic Director at the Royal Albert Hall, said: “Star Trek is a timeless classic with a huge cult following. We wanted to celebrate it and reward real Trekkies with this opportunity to win free tickets for those booking in Klingon. I think the box office probably thought I was joking when we asked them to take Klingon lessons. But now they are chatting regularly in Klingon, I think they realize it’s an essential life skill that all should learn.”

The Royal Albert Hall prepped to get calls in Klingon

They called in Klingon expert Alex Greene, to help. Mr Greene said: “not Holvam Qatlh charghchu’laH QuchDu’ Hab ghajbogh Humanpu’vetlh, ‘ach jInmolvam quvvaD, tlhIngan Hol lughojmeH Humanpu’, vItIv.”(“These simple humans with their smooth foreheads will never fully master my complex language, but I’m happy to help them learn enough to run their silly project.”)

Katarzyna Kuchnicka, Assistant Manager at the Royal Albert Hall box-office, said: “We’re used to organizing tickets for people from all over the world, but this is the first time I’ve been required to take a course in an alien language. When I first heard Klingon spoken, I thought it sounded a bit like a cat coughing up a fur ball, but there’s actually a lot more to the language than you first think. Yes, it’s very harsh, but I suppose that sort of fits. Klingons are pretty stern.”

On Saturday the 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek movie was performed and on Sunday it was Star Trek Beyond.

We attended the Sunday concert and despite having attended a few Star Trek themed concerts at this venue, it always feels as if we are experiencing it for the first time when we go to the Royal Albert Hall.

The Concert

Star Trek Beyond musical score royal albert hall

So why watch a movie that we have seen many times before at the Royal Albert Hall?  Because this time we’re not just watching it, the priority is to listen. We all love the effect music has on motion pictures but hearing it performed live by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir is a whole different experience.

Confession time, we’re not classic music aficionadas, we can’t tell Beethoven from Bach. But we are capable of appreciating the talent in both the Orchestra performing and Michael Giacchino’s ability to capture the mood of the script and amplify that emotion through music. What works beautifully with the Kelvin Universe movies is that the classical music style is in keeping with the Star Trek scores that came before it. It connects you to the past but is also timeless.

The Royal Albert hall is a concert venue unlike any other. Quite simply, it is beautiful and we felt special the moment we were in transporter range.

Trekkie Girls Royal Albert Hall

The Star Trek Beyond Concert was a matinee so we booked a table in the Laurent Perrier Champagne bar in the hall to eat and indulge in the bars namesake before hand. The staff were incredibly lovely joining in on our Trek banter which mostly revolved around the Pine brothers.

They even held the table for us again during the intermission and had drinks waiting so we waisted no time queuing. Everywhere should do this!

If you haven’t been to a Film in Concert, it takes a bit of getting used to for the first 10 minutes. We found our focus shifting between the orchestra and the screen. Not because one was distracting, but because the music drew us back into the story. Then we’d almost forget their was an orchestra until the music hit a crescendo and we were back in awe of this collective of humans creating this incredible sound in front of us.

So much EXTRA

The Royal Albert hall don’t just put on a film and perform the music. They go extra! On Saturday the film was preceded with talk from astrophysicist Roberto Trotta and a Science Quiz after the concert.

On Sunday we were blown away to discover that Simon Pegg (Actor Scotty and co-writer of Star Trek Beyond) was introducing the concert.

He spoke from the heart saying that this film is special to him as he not only co-wrote it but it was the last movie Anton Yelchin worked on before he tragically died. He dedicated the Concert to Anton and his Parents.

Then he took this incredible photo from the stage (and we took one right back at him!)

The Royal Albert Hall was filled with Star Trek fans today as Simon introduced Beyond with a live orchestra to an ecstatic crowd. The London Philharmonic Concert orchestra were flawless. The performance was dedicated to Anton Yelchin and his parents, Irina and Viktor. ❤️?? pic.twitter.com/UMBQGwFnlq — Pegg News (@simonpegg) June 3, 2018

After we returned from the intermission (and another bottle of bubbly!) I made some off-the-cuff remark about how wonderful it is to have this escapism. To come to this fabulous place and indulge in our Star Trek hobby. And that’s when the announcer said there would be a minute silence to remember those who lost their lives in the London Bridge terror attacks exactly one year ago.

That was the reality I needed. Star Trek isn’t just escapism, it’s a blueprint to the future, a reminder that we can live in a utopia and be moments away from losing it to fear. The rest of the film seemed more poignant from that moment. When Uhura says “There is strength in unity” it is as relevant today as it was a year ago, or next year.

In that concert hall there was the same unity as there was amongst the crew of the Enterprise on the screen. The harmony of the orchestra, the unity of trekkies and strength of London.

Would like to have heard: We were kinda hoping the Orchestra and Choir would do some beats and shouting with their own rendition of the Beastie Boys Sabotage. It wasn’t to be but we like that the sound crew cranked up the audio for that part!

Highlight: The end credits, especially the Original Series score which the Choir and Orchestra nailed. Anyone who didn’t cry is dead inside.

24th Century Socialites. 21st Century high functioning nerds. We go to Star Trek Conventions and talk about Star Trek a lot.
