Scott Woods back on the road and returning to Melfort

Scott Woods back on the road and returning to Melfort

Scott Woods, a multi-talented entertainer and musician, is back on the road with his brand new show ‘Old Fashioned Hoedown’.

Known as ‘The Fergus Fiddler’ and even as ‘The Flippin’ Fiddler’, Scott Woods is a two-time winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest, two-time winner of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Championship, as well as Fiddle Entertainer of the Year.

In 2018 he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association.

Joining Scott on stage will be his sister Kendra Norris, an extremely talented singer and multi-instrumentalist, who is also a Canadian Fiddle Champion as well as a three-time Duet Fiddle Champion with her brother Scott.

The show will also feature talented young Step Dancer Leo Stock, an 18-year-old singer, drummer and Canadian Step Dancing Champion who is fondly also known as “Spaghetti Legs”.

Leo most recently won the 2022 Open Step Dancing Championship at the prestigious ‘Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contests’.

This will be the first time the group has been on tour, since before the pandemic.

Woods told northeastNOW they’re beyond excited to get back to doing what they love.

“We all sat at home for two or three years, not being able to do the things that we wanted to do and there was such a longing for that. For me, the show is about the celebration of finally being back on the road doing what we love and so it’s really uplifting and fun.”

The event is set to showcase costumes, dancing, laughs, reflection and, of course, fiddle music.

Woods added that even if it’s not your favourite type of music, it should be family entertainment from start to finish.

“A lot of fiddle music, a lot of country music, some gospel, something for everybody. You don’t have to be a fiddle fan or a country music fan, by any means, to enjoy the show.”

Woods has made roughly 50 trips across the prairies in the last 35 years, touring once or twice a year.

He explained how the appreciation throughout the western parts of Canada has always been much appreciated and made it feel like a home, away from home.

“We discovered that the rural folks across the prairies love fiddle and country music and they love to dance. They are just good-natured, fun-loving people, who work hard and it’s like my second home,” he said.

“It’s certainly been a very welcoming area. We could have just done a tour here in Ontario, we’ve got lots of fans at home here and they love their fiddle music too, but when we had the chance to get on the road, I’m like, okay, let’s get this bus fired up and we’re heading west, that’s where we’re gonna go. We always enjoy it, we’ve been coming to Melfort for years.”

The group will be in Melfort on November 6, at the Kerry Vickar Centre. The show begins at 2 p.m., with tickets available for purchase at the centre box office.

Scott Woods makes a return to Fergus for Old Time Country Christmas tour

FERGUS – Scott Woods is back again with his Old Time Country Christmas tour. The tour has stops in 43 towns across 5 provinces and will be making its grand finale in Fergus on Dec. 22 at the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (325 George St. W, Fergus).

“It’s a nice way to end [the show], back in the hometown and in the church that I grew up in as a kid,” Woods told the Advertiser .

“It’ll be a little bit extra special in Fergus for sure.”

Proceeds from the Fergus show will be going towards Hearts for Haiti, a faith-based ministry that makes regular mission trips to Haiti.

The country Christmas show brings Canadian fiddle music, traditional country, gospel, step dancing and lots of family-friendly humour to the stage.

Woods added that he makes sure the event shows the Christmas spirit through and through. The fiddler said many times Christmas shows do not play much Christmas music at all, but save it until the end.

“They just play their normal repertoire and they call it a Christmas show,” he began. “It’s my pet peeve.”

“Our show is Christmas right from the beginning,” he said.

Woods is a multiple winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest, the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling competition and was named Canadian Fiddle Entertainer of the year.

In 2018, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association for his promotion and preservation of Canadian old time fiddling.

Joining Woods on the tour is his sister, Kendra Norris. She is a champion fiddler and well-known for her tribute to “Cousin Minnie Pearl.”

Doing her part in the show, Norris also covers essential piano parts, bass, accordion, fiddle as well as harmony, lead and vocals.

Steve Piticco will be playing electric and acoustic guitars. Playing drums, fiddle, singing and dancing is 19-year-old Leo Stock. Canada’s Yodelling Cowgirl, Naomi Bristow will be a special guest on the tour as well.

Woods will also be doing some trick fiddling on his tour.

“I’ve been known for a long time as the Flippin’ Fiddler,” said Woods.

When he was just 11 years old, Woods began practicing somersaults with two drumsticks before moving onto completing the movement while playing the fiddle.

He can also play the fiddle behind his back, and has a few other tricks up his sleeve.

Tickets to the Fergus show are $45 each and may be purchased using a credit card by calling the Scott Woods Band Office (toll free) at 1-855-726-8896. They can also be purchased online at: scott-woods.myshopify.com .

“It’s always a little bit more nerve wracking to have the hometown crowd as the audience, [and] the tickets are probably three-quarters sold already,” said Woods.

Fiddle champ headed to Rama in May

RAMA / YORKTON - Renowned Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods   and his All-Star band, with their new show Old Fashioned Hoedown, are back on the road and will be making a stop in Rama May 13, at St Anthony’s Parish Hall.

“It feels so great to be back doing what we love so much,” Woods told Yorkton This Week . “It's almost surreal to stand on the stage again after almost four years -- 2019 was our last big tour.

“In 2020, we had tours booked across Canada, the USA and two in Europe. We are still getting back on track and it will take some time. But the energy of connecting with the band on stage and with the audience is an amazing feeling.

“This spring we are back full steam with 39 shows in five provinces. We also have a Christmas tour in November and December already booked -- 43 shows in five provinces including a stop in Yorkton on Nov. 14.”

Conversely, Woods said the shutdown was a difficult time for a musician used to touring.

“I found the pandemic to be the most depressing time,” he said. “I was not motivated to play or write or even practise sometimes.

“It took a lot of self-discipline to get back to a regular practise routine. Not having a show or a recording to work towards just sucked all the life out of the music for me.

“Having said that, after a couple months of staring at the news everyday thinking COVID would soon be gone, I did manage to get into the studio and record a new album. I also recorded one for my sister, Kendra -- who has played harmony fiddle on all my CDs but had never recorded one of her own.”

It was also an opportunity to do something different that at least put him back on the road.

“Early in the lock downs, I also got bored sitting in the house, so I went out driving long-haul trucks,” said Woods. “As a kid, I always loved trucks and dreamed of one day driving one. Having driven our tour bus all across North America for the past 16 years, I figured that may be as close to a big truck as I would ever get. But thanks to COVID, I got the chance to get out on the open highway for almost two years. I drove mostly USA runs – Texas, Florida, Oregon, South Carolina, Georgia, the mid-west, all up and down the east coast and everywhere in between.

“It was a great experience and I took my fiddle and my dog with me on every trip.”

Now back on the stage Woods has a new show for his long-time fans.

“Our new show this year is called Old Fashioned Hoedown,” he said. “It is based on the old Gene Autry song by the same name. In the lyrics, it says ‘when Lady Luck gives you the throw down, and old man worry starts to mow down, there’s nothing like a good old fashioned hoedown, to chase your blues away.’

“After the lock downs of COVID, that’s pretty much how every musician has been feeling.”

Of course some aspects of a Woods’ show are forever.

“I continue to do my trick fiddling routine -- playing with a coat hanger or broomstick and turning somersaults and walking on a barrel while playing,” he said. “It is a two-hour show that will go by so quick we will have you laughing, crying and singing along with all your favourites.

“We feature many fiddle tunes in the style of Don Messer, Graham Townsend and Al Cherny and incorporate lots of county music, humour and step dancing,” he said. “Not unlike the variety television shows of the past -- Don Messer’s Jubilee, Country Hoedown, Hew Haw and the Tommy Hunter Show, we try to have a fast-paced exciting time for those attending.

“You don’t have to be a fiddle fan or country music fan to get something out of the show.”

The show is multi-talented too.

“Old Fashioned Hoedown features my sister Kendra Norris on fiddle, accordion and piano as well as her famous ‘Minnie Pearl’ comedy routine,” said Woods. “Germain Leduc from Vallefield Quebec cover piano and bass as well as plying his fiddle too.

“And our drummer, 18-year old Leo Stock is the current Canadian Open Step Dancing Champion. Leo also sings and plays his fiddle too. At one point in the show, we feature all four fiddles together in harmony.” Many of Woods’ shows across the country are fundraisers and the show in Rama is for St. Anthony’s Parish. Their full tour schedule and tickets are available to purchase from scottwoods.ca

Adam Scott adds a 9-wood, switches irons again

scott woods tour

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report.  Head over there for the full article.

His relatively lackluster performance with the KM-700 irons left him wanting to go back to what was already working: a set of wide-soled, low-bounce Miura AS-1 prototype blades that he used to finish second at the Genesis Scottish Open earlier in the summer, and T10 the following week at The Open Championship.

This week at the BMW Championship, Scott is going back to what worked in Scotland. At Castle Pines Golf Club, the tee boxes and fairways are made from a blend of Bentgrass and Poa Annua, and the rough is made from a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass and fescue grass.

scott woods tour

No matter the grass, however, Scott was set on going back to his faithful blade irons.

Interestingly, Castle Pines has similar grass types to Muirfield Village Golf Club, which is also designed by Jack Nicklaus. Scott first debuted the Miura AS-1 blade irons at the 2022 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday at Muirfield Village. So, the synergy Scott is creating with this iron switch is palpable.

That’s not the only change Scott is making this week, though.

Castle Pines sits at more than 6,200 feet above sea level, wreaking havoc on distance control, even for the world’s best players. Collin Morikawa, for example, is switching golf balls in Colorado to increase spin and distance control.

Scott’s addition of a TaylorMade Qi10 9-wood helps produce greater launch and spin than a 3-iron. Since the ball is traveling much further than it would at sea level, players must guard against their golf ball coming into greens with too shallow of a landing angle and running through the green. Scott’s high-launching and high-spinning 9-wood will help soften the landing, and it will also help cut through the dense Kentucky bluegrass rough.

Toulon Golf has officially announced its latest Small Batch putter — the Scotland.

Paying tribute to St. Andrews and launching during the Women’s Open Championship at St. Andrews, Toulon drew inspiration to explore the surroundings of the golf course, and the many small shops that populate the streets nearby.

That inspiration led to the creation of Small Batch Scotland and the thoughts of Toulon having a family business there years ago.

scott woods tour

The sole of Small Batch Scotland represents what Toulon’s shop may have looked like had it lined the streets of St. Andrews a century ago, and is finished with a tribute to the brand’s beloved and recently departed shop dog, Jack. With all of this as a backdrop, the brand have created their first Toulon & Sons putter.

scott woods tour

Featuring a classic desing, to modernize Scotland Toulon added a modified H1 hosel to the classic pintail design, lengthened the blade length to a modern 4.5 inches and designed a tailored, elegant squared off shoulder and bumper design.

The cavity design allowed the company to bring the design into modern proportion for both length and width, but it also improves the Scotland’s MOI in design to make it very forgiving.

Upon close inspection of the topline — and most evident while looking at the putter from the face on perspective — you’ll notice the gently raised and curved topline design. This not only pays homage to great pintail designs from the past, but subtly moves the CG to the center of the putter head, improving sound and feel and overall performance.

scott woods tour

The back cavity design features a crest designed for the Toulon family. The cross in the center signifies unity in its family and the detail on the top of the badge represents Toulon’s five family members, while the sixth is emblematic of the beloved dogs they’ve had over the years.

The face mill pattern is a Fine Double Fly Cut which was chosen for its artistic flair — and with the addition of the Big Tuna over mill, it is designed to create just the right amount of audio feedback.

A celebration of the Home of Golf and the contributions of family businesses to golf equipment required a special headcover. The Toulon family has had a close personal relationship with another family-owned business — Seamus Golf — dating back nearly a decade. To finish Small Batch Scotland, Toulon collaborated with Seamus to create a  wool Toulon & Sons headcover featuring an iconic Scottish tartan pattern.

PXG launches new Zero Torque Balance putter

scott woods tour

PXG has just launched the brand new Allan putter that is much different than any previous putter the company has made.

The goal was to create a putter that combined Zero Torque Balance Technology and high MOI to help golfers make more putts. Bob Parsons was so impressed with the putter that he named it after his late younger brother.

“It is so fun and easy to hit; it feels like magic. In fact, I am so impressed with how well the technology works that I named the putter for my little brother Allan. He was a hell of a golfer, and I know he would have loved it.”

scott woods tour

The first question you are probably thinking is what is Zero Torque Balance Technology? PXG engineered and patented ZTB to remove the twisting forces that work against a player’s grip during the putter stroke. This keeps the putter face pointed towards the target through the entire stroke and doesn’t require the golfer to square the putter at impact.

PXG claims that this works for all swing types, with a large arc or a straight back straight through stroke. A new S hosel creates a shaft axis that is just above the center of gravity for that toe-up balancing. This means that when you set the putter on a table or hold it without any force, the toe of the putter will point straight up in the air. Most traditional putter designs will have a face that points straight up or a toe that points down towards the ground.

Like most of the recent Battle Ready II putters, the Allan uses PXG’s hollow body S COR technology as well. This removes material from behind the face, filling the void with lightweight S COR polymer, and moving it to the perimeter of the head. Using S COR also allows PXG to reduce harsh vibration and dial in the sound for a soft and solid feeling putter.

The Allan putter has golf’s thinnest face at 0.055″ and the Pyramid Face Pattern to ensure consistent roll and ball speed no matter where you make contact on the face.

scott woods tour

The putter head has a very traditional mallet shape from address that some golfers might prefer over competitors that use a similar toe-up balance. Constructed from multiple pieces, PXG made the top siteline contrasting silver to further help with alignment.

A unique ball retriever is built into the sole so you can easily pick a ball off the green without bending over. PXG’s Precision Weighting system is also built in, so your fitter can dial in the perfect head weight.

scott woods tour

The new PXG Allan putter is available now on PXG’s website or in any of their fitting locations all over the country. Many grip options are available as is the PXG M16 putter shaft for an additional upcharge. The Allan putter is offered in right- or left-handed and starts at $449.99.

Golden Ring Tours

An opportunity to travel in time and experience the medieval towns of the Russian province

Golden Ring Tours Immerse in Russian heritage, architectural masterpieces & stunning landscapes.

Golden ring tours overview.

Our Golden Ring Tours take place close to Russia's capital Moscow, yet seemingly a world away, adventuring to the beautifully preserved ancient cities of the Golden Ring route is a must. The cities of the Golden Ring are perfect destinations for travellers seeking the idyllic, provincial Mother Russia of old. A must short detour when Visiting Moscow. Scattered across a rural landscape of rolling hills, flower blanketed meadows, rivers and streams. The cities of the Golden Ring were considered political backwaters by the time Soviet industrialisation took hold, escaping much of the urban progress that rapidly engulfed Moscow and its surroundings. Consequently, many locals to the Golden Ring still lead a largely traditional existence, living in tight-knit communities where the ancestral izba (wooden farmhouse) is the centre of daily life.

 Golden Ring Russia, Travel Highlights:

  • Regarded as open-air museums, be enthralled by many of the Golden Ring’s ancient settlements and architectural masterpieces . These include the UNESCO-listed monasteries and onion-dome cathedrals in Yaroslavl, the white stone monuments of Vladimir (the Golden Gates, the church of Boris and Gleb), and the medieval wooden houses and windmills in Suzdal.
  • Our Golden Ring Tours facilitate immersion in the colourful culture of provincial Russia. Towns such as Ivanovo and Kostroma still maintain a largely traditional way of life. When you visit the Golden ring, be sure to try the delicious traditional Russian cuisine, admire time-honoured handicrafts and unearth ancient relics of the Soviet times.
  • Discover the sacred places of the orthodox religion at their many cathedrals, churches and historical monuments like the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, the Holy Assumption Cathedral and the Cathedral of Transformation.
  • Uncover the age-old allure of Russia by delving into the rich history and legends of the Golden Ring. From Russian princes and knights to the early Tsars and Mongol invasions, you will experience something straight out of a fairytale.
  • Admire the stunning natural landscapes of the Golden Ring dominated by rippling meadows, lush green forests and winding rivers used to link fortified towns in the middle ages.

Many Golden Ring cities date back to at least the 10th century, and played a vital role in Medieval history, associated with the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, the reign of Tsars and the Mongol Invasions. When you go on a Golden Ring tour, you will notice that virtually every town is a living museum, made up of ancient forts, towering monasteries, imposing palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Recognised for their artistic merit as an important place in history, four sites on the Golden Ring circuit have gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status, including the 1,000-year-old city of Yaroslavl.
