Absolutely horrific customer service!

Was on the chat line for almost 2 hours… Because of course now you can’t even use a phone number to speak to an actual person. Two people on the other end could not figure out why I couldn’t check in for my flight tomorrow. And it showed that frontier owed me $39. And they also had me in the wrong seat in the middle of some people. They don’t have me sitting with my cousin, and I paid for my seat! Long story short, I was the one who figured out the problem and changed my seat to an aisle seat the $39 refund came off and the money part was rectified and I was able to check in on my I’ll seat, ON MY OWN!!!! I have been a den member since 2014 and advocated for Frontier….well, NO MORE! SIMPLY AWFUL NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE ON THE PHONE. And all of this because the flight that we took to Florida was canceled and we had to change the flight back as well! I also spent over two hours on the chat line yesterday trying to understand why a $50 certificate given to us for compensation for the canceled flight can only be used towards the base fare which of course was only $10! And you cannot save the remaining part of the certificate it must be used at one time. I now believe that frontier airline should be reported to the Better Business Bureau.

Only a 5 star so more people can see how bad it is! Absolutely terrible!

Never fly Frontier, they have the absolute worst customer service and the app gave us an error which took about 30-45 mins in line to fix. Then, we had to go back through bag check and get our boarding passes, taking a total of around an hour and a half just to get our bags checked! Then, when trying to board our plane, they said the tennis rackets we were carrying were not personal items!! It was 2 tennis rackets in a bag, but because it was just a little too long they didn’t allow it, even though it is maybe 3 inches thick at max and couple feet long, it barely didn’t fit inside of the personal item check. Then, they charged us 100$ for the carry on! If I knew it wasn’t considered a personal item I probably would’ve just brought my big tennis bag instead of my small one. Frontier is hands down the absolute worst company i have ever had the displeasure of flying with. I would not recommend this airline to any person, as it is all trouble and a pain.

NEVER USE APP OR THIS AIRLINE

Never again will we fly Frontier. Tried to check into our flights the day before leaving, the app wouldn’t allow it so we contacted Frontier Airline customer support. They told us this happens a lot, that the flight was still on and to show up to the airport at least 3 hours early to check in. We arrived to the airport and nobody was at the frontier desk. We were told by airport employees that the flight was still on and that frontier should be at the desk anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours before the flight. We were nervous so we began to contact Frontiers customer support. We waiting on hold until an hour and a half before the flight before being told by a frontier employee that the flight was canceled (months ago) but the day before was told it was still active and to come to the airport. When we became upset over this the frontier employee cancelled our flights on the spot, told us we couldn’t talk to a manager, informed us we were not getting our money back and hung up on us. This entire experience (our honeymoon) was then completely shifted because we needed to buy tickets that day at the airport (for a huge markup). Worst flying experience of our life. This is by far the worst airline, customer support, app, service you could use. Save yourself the headache, debt and stress. They will literally steal your money USE ANY OTHER AIRLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How to change or cancel a Frontier Airlines flight

Frontier Airbus A320

Editor's Note

Booking far ahead and not sure whether the flight will actually work for you? Frontier Airlines offers relatively flexible policies that may be of help.

As your travel date gets closer, the cost to change or cancel your flight will increase. However, even in a last-minute situation, you'll always have the option to change your plans or cancel if needed.

If you need to change or cancel a Frontier Alines flight, you might be pleased with the choices. Here's what you should know.

Frontier's cancellation policy

my trips frontier

Canceling a paid Frontier reservation

When canceling a paid Frontier reservation, you'll be charged a flat $99 fee — regardless of when you cancel your flight. This fee is per passenger, per direction.

With Frontier's refund policy, you'll receive a credit for the price paid (minus the fee incurred) if you need to cancel a Frontier flight. The credit is valid for 90 days, but you only need to book a flight by the expiration date — you don't need to fly by this date.

Keep in mind that the credit is nontransferable and is only good for one-time use. So, if your new flight is less than the total credit amount, you'll forgo the remaining value.

my trips frontier

If you cancel a paid reservation within 24 hours of booking the flight, you can get a full refund as long as you booked your flight at least seven days before travel. Flights booked within the seven-day window will carry the same cancellation fees as noted above.

Related: Ultimate guide to Frontier Miles: How to earn and redeem miles

Canceling a Frontier reservation booked with miles

Many other airlines waive the cost of redepositing miles when canceling a flight booked on miles, but in this case, you'll be charged a fee for doing so under Frontier's cancellation policy. To cancel your ticket and redeposit your Frontier miles back into your account, you'll have to pay a $75 redeposit fee. It doesn't matter how far in advance you cancel, but you must cancel before your flight's departure time.

Since there's no benefit to canceling early, you're better off waiting to see if Frontier Airlines cancels the flight or significantly changes your flight. A change or cancellation by Frontier might let you cancel or change your flight for free.

Related: Why you should wait to change or cancel your flight if you want your money back

How to cancel a Frontier flight

Fortunately, Frontier makes canceling a flight pretty easy from the " Manage Trip " section of its website. After entering your confirmation number, you'll want to click on the "Cancel Booking" link and follow the prompts to confirm your cancellation goes through.

Changing a Frontier flight

Changing a paid frontier reservation.

When changing a paid Frontier reservation, you should try to do it as early as possible since the change fees get more expensive closer to your travel date. If you can change 60 or more days before your flight, there's no fee. This is a better policy than what many other airlines offer and doesn't require you to purchase a special (or more expensive) fare type.

If you need to change between 59 and seven days before departure, you'll be charged $49. Should you need to cancel less than seven days before departure (including the same day), there's a $99 fee.

my trips frontier

Regardless of when you change your flight, you'll have to pay the fare increase if your flight price has gone up. However, unlike Southwest Airlines , you won't receive the difference back if your flight has gone down in price.

When you purchase a new flight, you can pay a Flight Flexibility add-on fee per person, per direction. This gives you one free date or time change fee-free up to 24 hours before the departure of your flight.

my trips frontier

If you select this option, you'll have to pay the fee for all passengers on your itinerary; you'll have to do this both ways if booking a round-trip flight. This option can only be purchased during the initial booking process, meaning it can't be added later.

Changing a Frontier reservation booked with miles

When booking a flight with Frontier miles, the fees to change your flight are the same as those incurred for a paid reservation. This means there are no fees if you change your flight 60 or more days before your flight departs. Within the 60-day window, if you booked your flight with miles, Frontier will charge $49 to change a flight 59 to seven days before departure and $99 to change within six days of departure.

Additionally, you'll be charged the difference if your new flight costs more miles. As with cash fares, if the new flight requires fewer miles, you won't receive a difference in miles back to your account.

How to change a Frontier flight

To change a Frontier flight, log in to your Frontier account and find the trip within your profile. You can also go to "Manage Trips" after logging in. From the page showing your trip information, click on the "Change Flights" link.

my trips frontier

Your original reservation date and time will be listed, and you'll have the option to select a new date. You cannot select a new departure or arrival city, just a date or time change.

my trips frontier

From there, select the new flight that works for you and go through the same booking process, including picking a seat assignment and selecting baggage options. Your fare difference will appear in the upper-right corner next to the cart icon. Clicking your cart will give you a breakdown of the total fare.

Related: Why I (sometimes) choose to fly a budget airline over a full-service carrier

Booking a bundle package to avoid change fees

You can add a few bundle options when you purchase a Frontier flight. These packages offer many perks, including the ability to change your flight for free with the flight flexibility option (though you'll still have to pay the fare difference). Of course, this bundled add-on option will increase the price of your ticket, but for certain situations, you might find the bundle to be worth it if there's a good chance you'll need to alter your plans at the last minute.

Avoid change fees with elite status

Finally, travelers with Frontier status will automatically be able to cancel or change their flight with no fee as long as they do so seven or more days from departure. Those with Elite Diamond status, however, will be able to receive a full refund — not a credit — when canceling their flight at least one day before the departure date. If you don't want to (or can't) earn Frontier elite status organically, know that Frontier occasionally offers status matches from other airlines .

Bottom line

Although it seems like you might need a flow chart to understand the policy in place for your exact situation, it is nice to know that as long as you change a paid reservation at least 60 days ahead of your flight's departure, you won't pay any fees. However, when canceling a flight at any point, you'll get a credit that comes with a decent amount of rules.

Changing a flight booked with miles also carries no fees as long as you make the change at least 60 days in advance. If you're not 100% certain which day you want to travel, you can always book an award ticket and then change it to another day if needed. If you're looking to cancel a flight booked with Frontier miles, keep in mind that the redeposit fees can quickly add up.

Ultimate guide to Frontier Miles: How to earn and redeem miles

With its discount fares and robust frequent flyer program, Frontier Miles can be a great value for Frontier Airlines travelers.

As a Frontier Miles member, you can earn miles and elite status. Frontier elite status offers multiple perks to make your travels more enjoyable and less expensive, including complimentary carry-on luggage, advance seat assignments and the ability to pool your miles . You can then redeem your miles for award travel.

It's worth noting the Frontier Miles loyalty program saw major changes in January 2024, moving to a revenue-based model of accumulating miles and status and introducing updates to its elite program.

Here's an overview of how the program works.

How to earn Frontier miles and points

The Frontier Miles program is free to join.

In 2024, Frontier altered how you can earn miles with its loyalty program. These changes affected how you accrue redeemable Frontier miles and how you earn points to qualify for Frontier Airlines elite status, which comes with perks such as free flights, free bags and seat selections.

Overall, you can earn Frontier miles and points toward status by making eligible Frontier purchases, spending on the carrier's cobranded credit card and making transactions with Frontier partners.

Earn Frontier miles and points on eligible Frontier purchases

Under its new revenue-based mileage accrual system, Frontier Miles allows you to earn based on the dollar amount of your ticket plus any additional products you purchase (including bags, seat assignments and bundles of optional services). Frontier Miles were previously accumulated based on the length of your flight.

Frontier Miles earning rates on purchases vary based on status. Non-elites earn at the starting rate of 10 miles and points per dollar spent, and earning rates go up to as many as 20 miles and points for every dollar spent at the highest tier (Elite Diamond, one of the updated names in the airline's status level revamp, which we'll dive into later).

In 2024, Frontier added a fourth status tier that starts at 10,000 elite status points. Frontier Miles also changed the names of its elite status tiers.

Tier names, qualification levels and mileage multipliers are as follows:

Earn miles with the Frontier Airlines credit card

Frontier Airlines partners with Barclays to offer the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard®.

New cardmembers earn 50,000 bonus miles and a $100 flight voucher after spending $500 on purchases and paying the $89 annual fee in full within the first 90 days of card membership.

With this card, you'll earn 5 miles for every dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Frontier (including airfare, fees and onboard purchases), 3 miles per dollar spent at restaurants and 1 mile per dollar spent on all other purchases. The miles you earn on this card count toward elite status.

The card also offers valuable benefits like Zone 2 boarding on all Frontier flights and family pooling. You can also earn a $100 flight voucher after your account anniversary when you spend $2,500 or more on purchases with your card during the card membership year.

Cardmembers also get waived award redemption fees. We'll discuss redemption fees later, but Frontier charges between $15 and $75 for reservations made sooner than 180 days before the date of travel.

Unless you place a high value on Frontier Airlines miles and elite status, we generally don't recommend this card. Most travelers are better off with a transferable points credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card .

The information for the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard® has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Earn miles and points with Frontier's partners

Frontier has relationships with several major rental car companies, so you can earn bonus miles and access negotiated rates when booking through their transportation partner page . While earning rates depend on the rental car company, you can generally earn between 50 and 100 miles per rental, per day or between 500 and 1,000 miles per rental.

Frontier Airlines also partners with Marriott Bonvoy and Wyndham Rewards . You can transfer Marriott points at a 3:1 ratio. You can transfer Wyndham points at a 5:1 ratio, and Wyndham points are transferred to Frontier in 6,000-point increments.

These are not favorable ratios; you're probably better off redeeming those points for hotel stays. However, it's an option worth knowing if you ever need to top off your Frontier Miles account.

Depending on the Marriott brand, you'll generally earn either 1 or 2 Frontier miles for every qualifying dollar spent. You must update your Marriott account preferences to earn Frontier miles instead of Marriott points. We don't recommend doing this since you'll get a maximum of 2.2% back in Frontier miles instead of at least 4.2% back in Marriott Bonvoy points for your Marriott stays, based on our valuations .

Like Marriott, you can also opt to earn Frontier miles instead of Wyndham points on your eligible stays:

  • Wyndham Blue (standard) : 1 mile per dollar spent on qualified stays
  • Wyndham Gold : 1 mile per dollar spent
  • Wyndham Platinum : 2 miles per dollar spent
  • Wyndham Diamond : 2 miles per dollar spent

Again, we generally recommend earning hotel points instead of Frontier miles.

You can also buy or gift Frontier miles and earn on eligible Vinesse Wine and Teleflora purchases. Finally, you can book a cruise through Frontier Cruises and earn miles at a preset rate. Often, you can earn more miles by booking through other cruise programs .

  • One- to five-night cruise : 1,500 miles
  • Six- to nine-night cruise : 3,000 miles
  • Nine- to 12-night cruise : 5,000 miles
  • Cruises 13 nights and longer : 10,000 miles

How to redeem Frontier miles

You can redeem Frontier miles for two things: flights and magazines. As you'd expect, the best use of Frontier miles is redeeming them for award flights. The airline publishes an award chart with starting award rates, but there are a few added fees that you should be aware of before booking. Here's a breakdown of the specifics.

Frontier offers three different redemption tiers: Value, Standard and Last Seat.

Value : This is the lowest redemption rate for all Frontier redemptions and can be compared to a saver ticket on a traditional carrier. These are generally offered during off-peak dates and less desirable flights, but we've also found Value tickets when there's low demand.

Standard : Standard awards are generally priced out at twice the cost of a Value ticket. These awards are available on more (but not all) dates.

Last Seat : As the name suggests, Last Seat awards are available for booking until the last seat on the plane is booked. Unfortunately, these awards are only bookable to Frontier elite members and cost 2,500 more miles each way than Standard awards. This can be a good option if you're booking at the last minute and paid fares are high.

Here's a look at Frontier's current award chart, with starting award rates:

Travel within the US and Puerto Rico

Award tickets to or from mexico, the dominican republic, jamaica, el salvador, guatemala, the bahamas, costa rica and antigua (taxes and fees vary), fees associated with frontier award tickets.

Unfortunately, Frontier adds a booking fee to most award tickets. You'll pay this fee when you book an award flight within 180 days of departure; the closer you get to departure, the higher the fee is.

Here's a look at the fee structure — note that these fees are charged in addition to other taxes and fees:

  • At least 180 days before departure : $0
  • Twenty-one to 179 days before departure : $15
  • Seven to 20 days before departure : $50
  • Six days or less before departure : $75

These fees are waived for Frontier elite status members and those with a Frontier Airlines credit card . If you frequently book award tickets close to departure, you may find applying for a Frontier credit card worthwhile, as this can save you considerable money. Additionally, companions booked on the same reservation as a Frontier cardmember or elite member receive waived redemption fees.

Be sure to factor these fees into the cost of your ticket when booking travel on Frontier Airlines. In some cases, booking a paid ticket instead of an award ticket may make more sense if you're subject to a booking fee. Frontier often offers low-cost tickets at the last minute, making the cent-per-point redemption value extremely low.

Frontier's Discount Den membership

Frontier Airlines offers a membership program called Discount Den . While not the same as elite status, the program gives members access to discounted fares for $59.99 annually. New members have to pay a $40 enrollment fee on top of the annual fee.

Children under 15 years old (one child per adult Discount Den member) fly for free when accompanied by the Discount Den member on select flights, offering excellent savings on certain routes. This offer is only valid on Kids Fly Free flights.

We've found that Discount Den can offer pretty excellent deals, too. On a given flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), a Discount Den member would save $20 to $30 per ticket over the standard price.

These discounts also apply to international flights. For example, you can score a $10 discount per person when flying from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Cancun International Airport (CUN).

We recommend that frequent Frontier flyers consider a Discount Den membership if they get more than $59.99 annually in savings from the service. That said, a family of four may recoup the cost of a Discount Den membership from just one family vacation a year.

Related: Should you join Frontier's Discount Den or the Spirit Saver$ Club?

Frontier's Go Wild! Pass

Frontier Airlines also offers an all-you-can-fly pass, which it calls Go Wild!

TPG tested the pass in 2023 and found unexpectedly high fees and limited availability. Additionally, while it's advertised as an all-you-can-fly pass, it doesn't provide unlimited free travel after you buy it.

You generally can get the most value from the pass by booking last-minute flights. Here's an example from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to LAS.

Go Wild! Pass customers can get confirmed bookings the day before flight departure for domestic travel and starting 10 days before flight departure for international travel.

The current price for an annual pass is $599 for the first year and is valid for travel between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025. The annual pass automatically renews at $599 per year.

Frontier also offers a fall and winter pass for $699 that's valid for travel between Sept. 2, 2023, and Feb. 29, 2024. The airline's monthly GoWild! Pass, valid for 30 days after purchase, is $149 per month, with the first month free (excluding a $99 enrollment fee). You can find the latest Go Wild! Pass offers here .

Frontier elite status underwent a major revamp in 2024.

It added a new tier, Elite Silver, and renamed all its status tiers, now called Elite Silver, Elite Gold, Elite Platinum and Elite Diamond. Aside from the addition of Elite Silver, which starts at 10,000 points, the elite status point thresholds for Frontier's new tiers mirror the program's previous requirements: Elite Gold (previously Elite 20K), Elite Platinum (previously Elite 50K) and Elite Diamond (previously Elite 100K).

Starting in January 2024, you can earn Frontier Airlines status in a revenue-based model determined by the dollar amount of your ticket plus any additional product purchases (including bags, seat assignments and bundles of optional services). Earning rates vary across status tiers, and members with no status will still earn 10 Frontier miles and points per dollar spent.

You can also get status with the cobranded Frontier credit card, and the airline has offered status-matching programs in the past, though the status-match offer was not available as of January 2024.

Let's look at each of these status tiers and their respective benefits.

Benefits marked with an asterisk are new for the member in the 2024 changes or newly applied to everyone on the booking.

Bottom line

Frontier may not be the most exciting airline, but its loyalty program could be worthwhile for those who fly on the airline often. The Frontier Miles program underwent a pretty significant revamp in 2024, resulting in an overhaul of its elite tiers and a shift toward revenue-based earnings for miles and status, which are changes worth considering if you're accustomed to the ins and outs of Frontier's previous program.

However, its award chart is easy to understand and can provide excellent value if you avoid pesky booking fees. Frontier Airlines' elite status could also be beneficial for families and those who want to avoid fees when flying on the low-cost carrier.

Now, you have the background to decide if Frontier Miles is the right program for you.

Frontier Airlines is adding a new perk to its airline credit card, making it easier than ever to jet around the country on an epic ski or golf trip.

The low-cost airline will now allow World Mastercard card holders to check two large bags for free on Frontier-operated flights, Frontier recently announced. Those checked bags also include oversized items like golf or ski equipment.

The perk is open to primary cardholders on flights purchased with the card on Frontier’s website or through the company’s mobile app. There is also no limit to how many times travelers can take advantage.

“Our cardmembers spoke, and we listened,” Bobby Schroeter, the chief commercial officer at Frontier Airlines, said in a statement. “This new benefit, combined with existing perks… makes our card a must-have for any traveler looking to maximize value and convenience on every flight.”

In addition to the new benefit, Frontier Airlines World Mastercard cardholders receive miles that don’t expire, award travel with no blackout dates, Zone 2 priority boarding, and a $100 flight voucher every year after spending $2,500 or more on purchases.

Travelers who sign up for the card for the first time will also receive Frontier’s Elite Gold Status for 90 days after their first purchase with the card. That status can then be extended to 12 months when members spend $3,000 within the first 90 days.

Frontier, which recently eliminated nearly all change and cancellation fees , has been venturing into more luxe offerings lately, including introducing a new economic business class , called BizFare, and adding an “ UpFront Plus” option , which allows travelers to purchase seats in the first two rows with a blocked middle seat.

Beyond perks gained with credit cards or by booking a higher fare class, Frontier remains an ultra-low-cost airline and typically charges passengers for everything from seat assignments to baggage .

‘Barely surviving’: Some flight attendants are facing homelessness and hunger

Working “on reserve” with hours of unpaid labor makes it difficult for new flight attendants to turn the job into a career..

my trips frontier

Kay had already worked a full day when Frontier Airlines called her to pick up a shift. The recently hired flight attendant had been awake since 4 a.m. driving Lyft, one of the few side gigs she could manage with her unpredictable schedule.

Her new career was off to a rough start. There were three-and-a-half weeks of unpaid training. Her first few paychecks were lower than she’d anticipated. She gave up her apartment in Atlanta, where median rent is about $1,500, and had been renting a room from a friend.

The only way to make ends meet, she said, was to juggle all the gig work she could find: Instacart shopping, pet sitting, Lyft driving. The ride-share company was offering a $500 bonus for completing 120 rides in four days. With her projected pay of $23,000 a year before taxes and insurance, chasing the extra money felt necessary.

So after working for Frontier from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Kay turned back to Lyft. By the time she reached the bonus, she’d gone nearly 24 hours without sleep.

New flight attendants like Kay learn that although their work has been deemed “essential” to the transportation infrastructure, it’s hard to stay afloat. A complicated pay structure that prioritizes hours in the air and entry-level wages that are on par with service industry jobs makes it difficult for many to turn the job into a career.

“I have to supplement my income. But then I’m also not sleeping,” said Kay, who spoke on the condition that she be identified only by the name she uses outside of work, because she fears retaliation from her employer. “We’re expected to save people on the plane … and we’re not getting paid a living wage.”

Kay is not alone. Most new flight attendants work “on reserve,” spending days waiting to be assigned flights. It’s common for them to take side jobs — bartenders, semi-truck drivers, makeup artists, church musicians. Some say they are struggling to feed their families and are living out of their cars.

In interviews with 18 current or former flight attendants, workers recounted dire financial situations, assault on the job from unruly passengers and mental health crises. They shared similar stories: Paychecks much smaller than expected. Quickly falling behind on bills. Spiraling into debt.

For decades, Hollywood and media have glamorized flight attendants for a fast-paced, globe-trotting lifestyle. In reality , their story mirrors the income inequality in other global industries that rely on blue-collar workers. Last year, homelessness in America was at a record high and appears to be worsening.

The industry may be at a turning point. This summer, flight attendant unions have made progress in years-long battles with airlines over better wages and retirement benefits, among other issues. Tentative labor agreements have reached the bargaining table but not been voted through by union members. Threats to strike keep coming , even if an actual stoppage has to be approved by federal mediators.

America’s largest flight attendants union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), said in a recent news release that many members working with Alaska Airlines have reported financial insecurity, including some that have “experienced homelessness, lived in their car, lived in a shelter, or endured some combination of these circumstances.”

An employment verification letter from American Airlines showing a projected starting pay of $27,315 per year recently went viral , with some calling it a “poverty verification” letter that could be used to apply for government assistance programs like food stamps. American confirmed the letter reflects the current base rate for first-year flight attendants on reserve, without premiums or incentives.

“As a passenger, you don’t really see those things,” said Rebecca Owens, a flight attendant with Alaska Airlines. “You see the smiling, happy flight attendants that are doing anything to survive but still bringing their best selves to work. It’s a lot to really comprehend.”

Real pay starts just before takeoff

While Alaska and American may be the most recent airlines to make headlines, “it’s the same story across probably every single airline right now,” said Julie Hedrick, who has been a flight attendant for 42 years and serves as the national president for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), which represents American Airlines employees.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data , the median pay for flight attendants was $68,370 in 2023. However, the projected yearly pay for first-year flight attendants is much lower than the median, according to numbers provided by the AFA: roughly $23,000 at Frontier, $25,000 at Alaska, $27,000 at American and $32,000 at Delta Air Lines.

Delta says that figure is closer to $34,500 when factoring in boarding pay and profit-sharing.

“Delta’s philosophy is to care for our people through industry-leading pay and programs that provide emergency savings support, financial literacy, and holistic wellness,” spokesman Anthony Black said in an email.

Alaska Airlines confirmed the base pay figure for flight attendants, before premiums and other pay factors.

“Like all employees who work on a non-salaried basis, how much a flight attendant makes in a year depends largely on how much they work,” the airline said in a statement. “It’s important to note that our flight attendants have significant control over their workload because there is no contractual minimum (or maximum) of required work.”

New flight attendants who start out “on reserve” are usually guaranteed around 75 flight hours per month. Even if they are not scheduled for enough flights to hit those hours, they’re still paid for that minimum. Hourly raises typically come twice a year until workers reach a “top rate,” usually around 12 years of service.

“Being a flight attendant is great if you get up to 12 years and beyond,” said Beth, a Delta flight attendant who spoke on the condition that she be identified only by her middle name, because she feared retaliation from her employer. “But when you first start out, you’re just barely surviving.”

On paper, airlines promise flight attendants double-digit hourly rates. Kay looked forward to making $25.50 an hour , more than three times the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

But the actual take-home pay is not so simple. Time outside of flying hours — the time spent at the airport, boarding and deplaning — is either unpaid, or paid at a fraction of the hourly rate.

Delta is an outlier, paying half of the hourly flying rate for boarding, with some caveats; the airline is the only U.S.-based mainline carrier where flight attendants are not represented by a union.

For those at other carriers, “it’s pretty common to work six hours of flight time, … but you’re actually working for 12 to 14 hours,” said Rich Henderson, a flight attendant of more than a decade who runs the Two Guys on a Plane meme account with his husband. “We have a lot of time at work we don’t get paid.”

The system is legal; flight attendants and other aviation workers are exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act because their job is essential to the economy. Hedrick says the practice started a long time ago. When flight attendants came into unions , “we just started getting paid the same way as pilots did ,” she said.

Sara Nelson, the president of AFA, said unpaid boarding is “something that we’re fighting to end.” It’s one of many issues tangled in years-long contract negotiations.

“With this long, lengthy delay in getting these contracts done, our wages have fallen so far behind the rest of the country and world,” Hedrick said, pointing out the contract for American Airlines flight attendants was negotiated in 2014.

Airlines for America, a trade group representing major carriers, declined an interview request, but sent a written statement that described its workforce as “the backbone of the industry and our greatest asset.”

“U.S. passenger and cargo airlines employ more than 800,000 workers — the largest workforce in more than 20 years — who are earning the highest wages and most generous benefits in the history of our industry,” said the statement, which did not distinguish between airline jobs.

Struggling to make rent

Multiple flight attendants said despite the pay, they’re reluctant to leave the profession.

Part of it is the sunk-cost fallacy; they’ve already suffered through unpaid training and logged hours toward seniority. But most reiterated that they’re still attached to the job.

Kay, the Frontier flight attendant, said a love of travel and the promise of flexibility attracted her to the work. She wants to get a job with Delta, the highest paying commercial airline, but has been rejected twice after making it to the interview process.

She’s clinging to the hope that if she hangs on, she’ll find a better employer and gradually better pay, but “you have to go through the rough patch,” she says.

Nas Lewis, who has been a flight attendant for a decade, runs the nonprofit th|AIR|apy to address flight attendant mental health. She remembers her first paycheck was $250.

“You have rent, you have car payments, you have children, you have to feed yourself, you have to get to work,” she said. “I was struggling to the point where I was dealing with suicidal ideations and started to drink a lot just to tune everything out and have a moment of escape.”

Therapy eventually helped lift Lewis out of despair. Sharing her feelings on Facebook with other flight attendants was a powerful first step. Her peers confided that they were in similar situations.

“It made me feel so much better because I thought this whole time I’ve been alone,” Lewis said.

In her 16 years with Alaska Airlines, Thresia Raynor heard similar stories from her peers.

Most flight attendants must first attend training for about three to six weeks, often unpaid. Once they officially start the job, making around $1,800 a month, it’s easy to fall behind on bills, she said. “Then it snowballs.”

Flight attendants may start the job feeling financially secure, but a year or two later, Raynor said, “they’ve burned through everything that they had, now they’ve racked up credit card debt and loans from friends and family.”

Raynor has met flight attendants who say they’ve eaten leftover food from passengers’ in-flight meals. She’s arranged mobile food pantries to help feed flight attendants in Anchorage.

Believing more flight attendants must be experiencing the same hardships, she and a few colleagues created the Facebook group “ Alaska Airlines FA’s experiencing hunger and homelessness ” last September.

“People would come to work and hide the fact that they didn’t have anything to eat, or even a dollar to pay the crew van when they got to their layover,” Raynor said. “I wanted to remove the shame so that we could all openly talk about it … and be able to help each other.”

“People would come to work and hide the fact that they didn’t have anything to eat, or even a dollar to pay the crew van when they got to their layover.” — Thresia Raynor

The group grew with both flight attendants in need, and those in the position to help. People shared stories of living out of their cars, using YMCAs and gyms to shower. Members have rallied to help move colleagues facing domestic abuse, or buy car seats for their children, or cover a meal at the airport.

“A beautiful side of our work group is [flight attendants] will give even what they don’t have ... to take care of each other, which is pretty inspiring, but it’s also really sad,” said Owens, who helped start the Facebook group.

Stacked in bunk beds ‘like sardines’

Some flight attendants choose to be nomads, giving up apartments for “ van life .” Some move in with family members to save on rent, or rely heavily on crowded “ crash pads ” — shared group housing where people rotate in and out on a temporary basis.

Even working for Delta, Beth said she’s struggled to balance her financial life and mental health in expensive hub cities.

She lives in a rent-controlled building for $1,800 per month. The location allows her to be close to her father, who has cancer, but she commutes to a hub city in another state, where she is technically based, and back around five times a month. There, she rents access to a crash pad that costs between $325 and $450 per month depending on how many nights she uses it.

Crash pads can be helpful for flight attendants who spend a lot of time on the road — or need a more affordable place than a hotel to sleep near their base airport. Some offer private rooms and cost as much as renting an apartment; others lower the price by fitting as many tenants as possible.

Beth’s crash pad looks like a cross between a budget Airbnb and a hostel.

There’s a lighted mirror near the kitchen where flight attendants can do their makeup to free up the sole bathroom. The living room’s flimsy furniture is flanked by luggage racks and name-tagged storage containers.

A whiteboard keeps track of roommate schedules. The two carpeted beige bedrooms have windows that remain closed around-the-clock and black metal bunk beds — three sets in the women’s room, where Beth stays with five other women, and two in the men’s.

“No one cleans the place. I got bites from what looks like bedbugs,” she said. “They stack us in there like sardines to make the most money.”

Little optimism for progress

Several flight attendants who spoke to The Post say they’re angry that they make less than they would working comparable hours at a fast-food restaurant , despite their extensive safety responsibilities, regular training and demanding lifestyle.

“This is a problem across the country,” Nelson said. “The basic standard and social contract that if you work full-time, you can get a living wage, health care, retirement and actually have time to spend with your families — that has been eroded in the airline industry the same as it’s been eroded everywhere else.”

The median pay for airline and commercial pilots is $171,210 . Last year, Alaska’s CEO made more than $10 million. The CEOs for Delta and American each made more than $31 million.

AFA is currently bargaining with 14 carriers over flight attendant contracts. Recent negotiations have had mixed results.

In late June, Alaska Airlines and its flight attendants union secured a tentative agreement deal for a “record contract.” The agreement would have made the airline the first carrier to secure boarding pay in a legally binding contract. But three Alaska Airlines flight attendants who spoke to The Post were not convinced the deal was a real victory. Union members rejected it in August, with 68 percent voting against ratification.

Alaska Airlines declined an interview request with The Post. “We remain committed to reaching an agreement that reflects the critical role of our flight attendants and is good for Alaska’s long-term success,” the carrier said in an emailed statement. “We will assess the details available to us and reconvene with AFA to discuss next steps.”

On July 19, American Airlines and the APFA reached a tentative agreement which Hedrick said resulted in “significant benefits” for flight attendants; the agreement must still be voted on by APFA executives and its members.

American Airlines told The Post in a statement the company’s tentative agreement is “a contract that will provide immediate financial and quality-of-life improvements for American’s flight attendants. It’s a contract we’re proud of and one our flight attendants have earned.”

Frontier did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Seniority doesn’t solve everything

Martinez, a flight attendant who has been with Alaska Airlines for 16 years, said she’s in worse financial shape than when she started. She spoke on the condition that only her last name be used, because she feared retaliation from her employer.

She became a single mother of two when she adopted her niece and nephew from the foster system. She’s been juggling untenable housing arrangements since she came up $400 short of the mortgage on her home in Washington state.

The earnings she makes renting out her home still don’t cover the mortgage and HOA fees. Martinez had to send her 9-year-old girl, who has autism, to live with her parents in northern California.

“If I didn’t have my parents, I don’t know what I would do,” she said.

For now, she’s staying on an air mattress in a friend’s studio in Los Angeles between her overnight trips. Before that, she slept in her SUV in the Los Angeles International Airport parking lot, sometimes with her teenage boy.

“It’s very frustrating and I would like to change careers,” Martinez said. “At the same time … one of the things that I love about this job is that I can have some more control over my schedule — what days I want to work, what days I don’t.”

She’s not sure what she’d do if she changed professions, particularly as a single parent. “I’m not a coder. I don’t have any technical experience,” she said.

Growing up in California, her family struggled financially. Martinez said they experienced homelessness and spent time living in a family shelter. The travel benefits she gets through her job opened up a new world for them.

“For my family especially, it was a big deal that I have gotten hired as a flight attendant,” she said.

When Martinez started her flight attendant career, she was single with no children. She flew as many shifts as she could pick up, traveling across the country to big cities.

“It was fun,” she said. “I can’t complain about that.”

As a parent, Martinez needs more income to support two children — and more time to care for them.

She has the seniority to pick up more flights, but “if I want to actually see my kids and participate in their life, I can’t work past 80 [flight hours],” she said. “Even then, that’s pushing it.”

Last December, Martinez worked 144 flight hours and brought home $4,653.80. She was gone so much that “the entire month … I did not see my kids in person,” she said.

It felt like an unsustainable solution to Martinez, much like how Kay feels about her marathon workdays.

Months after the Frontier flight attendant first spoke with The Post, she said she’s still relying on gig work to supplement her income, which may prove even more necessary if her union votes to authorize a strike .

She recently spent a morning delivering packages, then got called for a three-day trip with two hours to report to the airport. At the end of the first day of flying, she realized it had been another full day she went without sleeping.

Seattle-Tacoma Airport Cyberattack Day 4: A User’s Guide For Travelers

Flying in or out of Sea-Tac? No Wi-Fi or phones. No baggage tracking. Dark departure and arrival boards. But don’t fret. Here’s how to get through your journey like a pro.

One in four departures out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was delayed on Monday.

F our days after a cyberattack took down internet, phone, baggage and multiple other systems at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, authorities are still in the dark and travelers are still encountering a swath of inconveniences.

The Wi-Fi and phone systems are still down. The departure and arrival boards are dark. The airport’s app is not updating. Baggage sorting is being done by hand. The airport’s lost-and-found tracking system isn ’t working. The paid-parking system has also been impacted.

“We saw some nefarious characters that may have been on our system early in the morning on Saturday, and as we would take precautions for that, we actually turned off our entire system to avoid anything further,” Perry Cooper, an airport spokesperson, told reporters Monday afternoon.

When Sea-Tac’s systems will be restored is anybody’s guess. “We’re pretty much where we were previously on that situation,” Cooper said. “There’s currently no estimated time of return.”

On the bright side, fewer flights were disrupted on Monday compared to the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, a total of 474 departing flights—accounting for roughly a third of the airport’s scheduled departures—were delayed, according to data from FlightAware. On Monday, 172 departures out of Sea-Tac were delayed—still about a quarter of all scheduled flights.

The screening systems used by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at airport checkpoints were not impacted, according to Greg Hawko, the agency’s federal security director in Washington State. “We are on our own dedicated, secure network that is controlled by TSA,” he said.

Flying to, from or through Sea-Tac over the next few days? Here are some tips:

Print your boarding pass or use the airline’s mobile app

The airport’s Wi-Fi is down. Before you get to the airport, print a physical boarding pass or use your airline app to get your mobile boarding pass and to check any bags. “This will help speed up the check-in process,” Cooper said.

Get to the airport three hours before departure

While larger airlines like Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines have their own check-in operations and dedicated gates at Sea-Tac, smaller carriers—Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country and the international airlines—have been especially affected by the outage.

“These are some of the folks using our common-use check-in counters and our kiosks and also the common-use gates that we have,” Cooper said. “Please arrive at least three hours early if you’re traveling with these carriers.”

Don’t check your bags if at all possible.

The baggage-sorting system is down. “If you can travel without checking bags, do so,” Cooper advised. “A lot our airlines are encouraging folks to just go ahead and carry on what you need and go straight to security checkpoints. That’ll make a big difference.”

The airport’s baggage tracking system uses about 10 miles of conveyor belts, with many scanners that track bags as they move toward the right plane. Currently, bags can only “go to a certain point,” explained Cooper, and are not being automatically routed to different parts of the airport and loaded on the correct aircraft. As a result, checked luggage is being sorted by hand.

Cooper noted that even for major airlines whose own bag-checking systems are working, the airport’s logjam is “potentially delaying some bags to get to where they’re going to go, so you may not notice anything until maybe you get to your destination.”

Adhere to carry-on rules.

“If you’re not used to traveling with only carry-on bags, check your bags for prohibited items and remember the 3-1-1 liquid rule ,” Hawko said.

Get your information from the airlines.

The Sea-Tac app is currently not updating. If you are traveling over the next couple of days, check with your airline for current flight information and updates on baggage.

Travelers can also find updates on Sea-Tac’s social media channels, including X , Facebook , Instagram and Threads .

Need help at the airport? Look for the green vests.

“In the terminal, look for any of our team in green vests,” Cooper said, noting that many Sea-Tac office employees have been dispatched to the airport floors to help travelers and answer questions.
