Singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett's Warner Records debut album, young forever, features edgy, gothic pop grounded in stories about heartache, mental health, and accountability. While growing up in New Jersey, Barrett endured an extremely rough childhood riddled with abuse. Writing and singing have always been the saving grace that helped Barrett feel less alone in the world and less alone with her thoughts as she battled demons from her past and mental health struggles, including bipolar personality disorder and an eating disorder.

With young forever, Barrett embraces her internal and external conflicts and takes bleak thoughts and expresses them bravely. Punctuated by her grit-glam marvel, Barrett's music has intrinsically always been about empowering people who feel isolated. "Growing up, I was very ashamed of my struggles, so the second I got a platform, I knew what I had to do with it because I didn't want anyone to feel the way I felt - alone." With young forever, Barrett has crafted something truly special.

Opening the night was producer and singer-songwriter Daniel Briskin, who is known professionally as briskin . Taking to the stage alongside his 2-piece band briskin performed a bunch of his tracks including “In The Middle” and his latest single “Chemicals”.

As light faded and Nessa’s guitarist and drummer took to the stage the audience erupted in screams and began chanting ‘NESSA’. The LED screen began flashing with a cross as the talented 20-year-old walked onto the stage. She kicked off with her dark-pop track “madhouse”, as she worked her way around the stage to greet her adoring fans. Following on from this Nessa went on to perform “talk to myself” and “too hot to cry”, which really showcased the singers strong vocals. The singer went on to perform her enchanting song “god’s favourite”, which has the entire venue captivated. Nessa spent lots of time interacting with her dedicated fans, including collecting gifted cowboy hats from the fans. The majority of the set list was from her 2022 album young forever including “dear god”, “tired of california” and gaslight”.

Last month the singer released unapologetic track “american jesus”, which she debuted on the US leg of the tour, and the track delves into feelings of longing and desire. Barrett also performed the heartbreaking track “noose”, a song which fans do not often get the opportunity to hear live and had the entire audience in a trace. To close such a special night she performed “die first”, another of her latest singles “BANG BANG!” and of course “i hope ur miserable until your dead”. The singer danced around the stage with euphoria as the confetti canons went off and the venue filled with white confetti, it was a perfect way to end her first headline show in the UK. We certainly can’t wait to continue to watch and support Nessa Barrett as her career continues to blossom.

When does the “young forever” tour start?

Nessa begins her 16-stop tour in Phoenix on February 23, 2023. From there, she travels all around the United States, before her last stateside stop in Los Angeles on March 21. Five months later, on August 23 and 17, Nessa will cross the pond to perform at Bramham Park in Wetherby, England.

Where is Nessa Barrett playing?

Nessa has 16 stops planned for her “young forever” tour. The first show is in Phoenix on February 23. Showcasing Barrett’s signature sultry pop sound, the track marks her first release of 2024 and also serves as the first taste of her sophomore album, AFTERCARE, arriving later this year.

"’PASSENGER PRINCESS' represents the intense honeymoon phase when you first enter in a new relationship — the mindset where you would do anything for the one you love just to experience the passion of a connection,” Barrett explains.

Top UK wine critic Stephen Barrett dies as tributes pour in for Plymouth legend

Tributes have poured in after reports of the death of hugely respected Plymouth restaurateur and wine expert Stephen Barrett at the age of 77. Mr Barrett is fondly remembered as a larger than life character who was one of the UK’s top wine writers and penned a popular column in The Herald for years.

Only active on social media just days ago, it is understood Mr Barrett died suddenly at his home in Plymouth on Sunday. Within hours there was a huge outpouring of tributes and memories to a man seen as one of the mainstays of Plymouth’s hospitality scene.

Edmond Davari, who now runs the Souk eatery in Plymouth Market, called Mr Barrett “an amazing restaurateur”. He said: “He was also one of the best wine critics in the country. I have known him for 40 years and have the greatest respect for him.”

Mr Barrett and Mr Davari started their careers in Plymouth in the 1980s. Mr Davari opened the Sardis restaurant at Derry’s Cross at the same time Mr Barrett launched Barrett’s in Princess Street.

“We were competitors,” said Mr Davari. “I bought his restaurant off him and called it Bougie, and later the Painter.”

He added: “Stephen was very sociable and understood the hospitality business, I learned a lot about wine from him. His fame went beyond Plymouth, he was known in London.

“I only saw him two weeks ago. He was a larger than life character who always had something to say, and was very much loved by people in Plymouth. It is a great shame.”

Mr Barrett also ran the popular and highly-rated Bistro One restaurant in Ebrington Street for many years. He was kind hearted and sold off some of his collection of Robert Lenkiewicz palettes to help Plymouth charity Friends and Families of Special Children.

But he is probably best known as a wine expert and writer, a member of the exclusive Circle of Wine Writers and the Association of Wine Educators. With partners Iain Ballantyne and Brian Attree he co-created and acted as consultant on the gameshow Wine Hunt on Channel 4 in 1998 and 2001.

Mr Ballantyne posted on social media how he and Mr Barrett went on a “wine race” across Europe and created a “surreal travel book” on Eastern Europe. He said: “Stephen was a generous, kind-hearted, kindred spirit.”

He also appeared on TV and radio and wrote for a range of publications including the Western Morning News and The Herald where he is fondly remembered for his vast knowledge and sense of humour. Former Herald and WMN journalist Steve Grant wrote on social media: “Very sorry to hear of the loss of the superb raconteur Stephen Barrett. Many happy memories of time spent and adventures with him.”

In recent years Mr Barratt was well known for organising wine tasting events, and tours to Devon and Cornwall vineyards and wineries. Tributes poured in on social media with Purdy Giles, from Purdy’s Punjabi Cuisine, posting: “Your kindness, support and the sharing of your knowledge and experience in the world of food has been invaluable to me.

“Shared lunches, always cooked with love, will be remembered with fondness and gratitude.I know you enjoyed my cuisine too, always supporting my endeavours. Your sense of humour and your curiosity for life and living. Time to rest now - know that you made a difference.”

Artist Yvonne Turner called Mr Barrett “an enigmatic, witty and friendly man and special connoisseur of food and beverage”. She said: “I knew him as a neighbour since the mid 1990s. He will be missed by so many. Those who knew him well and those who followed his wine tasting, talks and cooking programmes. Farewell dear Stephen.”

Annabel Smith , who runs Annabel's Cabaret, said: “So very sad to lose you Stephen. I have many, many fond memories. Thank you for the big laughs, your knowledge and heart.”

Slain McGough Davey, of arts organisation WonderZoo, said: “Sad to hear the news that Stephen has passed away. He was such a kind and fun person and a legend in Plymouth and beyond.”
