LEGOLAND® Discovery Center 598 Assembly Row Somerville, MA

Ever since my oldest son first clicked together a pair of chunky plastic Duplo bricks, Lego has captured his imagination like no other toy. And he’s not alone: His third-grade peers play with the building blocks more than pretty much anything else, and now his first-grader brother and his friends are following suit.

So when a pal let him know there was a Legoland somewhere in California, and maybe Florida too, he wanted to know just how quickly we could get to Logan Airport. But for a family with three small children, two busy parents, cross-country trips aren’t easy to come by. So when I heard that a Legoland Discovery Center —billed as a smaller, brainier brother of the amusement park—was coming to Boston, we were all thrilled.

What to expect

The Legoland Discovery Center is located in Somerville’s Assembly Row , and—first good sign—there’s a spacious, free garage right next door (no small thing if you’ve ever navigated parking for, oh, any other cultural destination within city limits). Once parked, just follow the yellow beacon: A life-sized Lego giraffe holding court just outsize the entrance to the facility. Spying a huge Lego structure on an ordinary street corner was enough to get the kids seriously excited before we even entered the facility.

Image for Must Do: Legoland Discovery Center Boston article

You have to make a time-slotted reservation here to be assured of entry, and even with a booking, many people have reported agonizingly long wait times in lines to get in. We’ve now visited twice, and neither time did we have to stand in a line for more than a few minutes. Which is not to say there’s not some waiting involved. Before you get to the “main room” of the facility, you have to go through a Disney-esque gauntlet: first, a staged photo “opportunity” upon entrance, then an elevator ride, then a curiously long, standing-room-only video presentation featuring two Minifigures who tell you about the virtual Lego factory tour in the next room. The virtual tour showed how Legos are manufactured, and allowed kids to design their own virtual Minifigures using a joystick. I appreciated the educational feel of it all, but needless to say, there was a lot of foot-shifting and whining from kids who were just ready to go play.

The first ride

But before they could do that, we were ferried on the Kingdom Quest Laser Ride, in which we were invited to shoot up villainous Lego figures with a laser gun from an automatized vehicle. The kids liked the ride in particular, but I couldn’t help but wonder whether it would be better if the virtual factory tour and mobile shooting gallery were an optional part of every visit to the Legoland Discovery Center.

The mini Boston area

Image for Must Do: Legoland Discovery Center Boston article

But even our second spin through the factory tour gauntlet was made worth it by what lay beyond: First, a large room filled with a Lego representation of Boston. Every city attraction was there, from Foxboro Stadium to the Zakim Bridge to the “Cheers” bar (situated below “street level” and complete with a button in which you can play the show’s theme song.) This is the room that adults—who are allowed into the Legoland Discovery Center only when with a child, aside from occasional adult-only nights—will appreciate most. The kids found it completely magical, too: the way the lights would periodically dim to replicate evening, the interactive buttons that would allow you to take a swing from home plate at Fenway, or race boats up the Charles. According to Ian Coffey, who won a contest last year to be an on-site “master builder” at the center, some three million bricks were used to create the cityscape. Coffey and his team regularly spruce up the layout with seasonal effects—such as cobwebs and other spooky décor over Halloween—and the effect is truly extraordinary.

RELATED: Must Do—The Art of the Brick

The main attraction

Beyond the model of Boston was the real pièce de résistance, as far as the kids were concerned: A big, open room with different playing “zones.” Lego enthusiasts will likely race straightaway to the Racers Build and Test Site, where kids can design Lego cars to zoom along a series of ramps. They can also join periodic classes throughout the day in an “Academy” room, where they can borrow a bag of bricks and a building plan, as well as help from staffers.

Image for Must Do: Legoland Discovery Center Boston article

On either side are zones geared toward tots and preschoolers. On one end there’s a Duplo-themed playground with animals to climb on and a slide. On the other, there’s a cushioned, multi-level climbing maze fashioned after the Lego City line. There are oversized, rubberized bricks in here that you can actually click and stack, and during both of our visits, my two-year-old spent most of his time in here, climbing around or building huge towers with the bricks.

Image for Must Do: Legoland Discovery Center Boston article

There was another ride, Merlin’s Apprentice, in which kids can pedal their “flying” vehicles up to get a view of the center (a good way to expend some energy stored up from the virtual factory tour). But the biggest draw of the entire experience is a “4D” Cinema, showing Lego-themed sketch movies every half-hour or so. The movies are 3D, and when there’s wind, rain, or fire in the storyline, you’ll actually “feel” it, thanks to fans and other special effects equipment. On both of our visits, there was a glitch with the special effects technology, but it was still an extremely original experience the kids loved.

There’s a café—necessary given the amount of time you’ll likely spend here, and a “no outside foods” rule. The options of cold sandwiches, fruits, veggies, and baked chips were healthy enough. But the addition of a few hot lunch options, and a more clearly delineated barrier separating the café from the play area—it sort of floats among the attractions, inviting toddlers to tote their half-eaten cheese sandwiches into the brick pits—seems in order. (But really, this is nit-picking.)

The final consensus

(Nearly) everything is awesome at the Lego Discovery Center: My boys and their friends could have spent nearly an entire day here happily, and can’t wait to return. For kids between the ages of 3 and 10, especially, it might be the most fun attraction in town, and even if your child isn’t a Lego nut, he or she will appreciate the sheer spectacle of the place. Just prepare to spend some time (and, of course, some money): You can’t escape without a visit to a Lego store situated at the exit. At the very least, it may spark some holiday wish-list ideas. The kids will leave with smiles, regardless.

Where Are LEGO Factories Located? (With Video Tour!)

Where are the LEGO factories located

The LEGO Group, a Danish toy manufacturer, is best known for its colorful plastic building blocks. But did you know LEGO factories are not just located in Denmark but can be found worldwide? If not, this blog post is for you! We will explore the locations of all of the LEGO factories in the world.

The LEGO Group currently has five factories worldwide and two more that are planned to be opened in the near future. The factories are located in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Mexico, and China, and two more will be opening in Vietnam and Virginia, the U.S.A. in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

The table below shows the current location of LEGO factories, the number of employees and which regions they supply.

To see a PDF of the LEGO Global Supply Chain Network  click here .

The LEGO Group has numerous offices, design centers, and warehouses worldwide. The primary Design Center is located in Billund, Denmark, where a team of over 100 designers works on new LEGO products. There are also LEGO Design Centers in Enfield (United States), Kladno (Czech Republic), Nyíregyháza (Hungary), and Shanghai (China). These Design Centers work closely with the factories to bring new LEGO products to life!

Table of Contents

The LEGO Factories

Below is a brief description of the seven LEGO factories.

The LEGO Factory In Billund, Denmark

The Billund factory is the first LEGO factory and focuses on the more challenging production of LEGO Technic and LEGO Bionicle elements.

The LEGO Factory In The Czech Republic

The Czech Republic factory was opened in 2000 with only 80 employees. Fast forward to today and they have approximately 4, 500 employees, largely due to the expansion announced in 2013 and completed in 2015. The LEGO Group has estimated that the size of the production area is similar to the size of 22 soccer fields.

The Kladno factory is responsible for the packing, decoration, and assembly of LEGO elements. They also research new technologies that help with these processes. Another part of the factory deals with model production for LEGOLAND Parks and Stores worldwide.

The LEGO Factory In Hungary

The factory in Hungary opened in 2006 with the production of LEGO DUPLO bricks. The LEGO Group built a new factory in 2012 close to the original one. LEGO System and LEGO DUPLO products are manufactured there. An important consideration for the LEGO Group was to focus on a more environmentally friendly factory with electric cars, cycle paths and an artificial lake for recycling water.

The LEGO Factory In China

The LEGO factory in Jiaxing, China was opened in 2016. On January 4, 2022, the LEGO Group announced that they would expand production capacity and invest in new equipment in the Jiaxing factory. This will help keep up with the growing demand for LEGO play experiences in China and Asia.

The expansion will add 42,000 square meters and include a new automated high bay warehouse, molding facility and building for processing LEGO elements.

In December 2021, the LEGO Group celebrated opening its 300th LEGO store in Haining near Jiaxing city.

If you want to read more about the LEGO factory in China, I wrote an article entitled “Are LEGO Sets Made In China (The Truth!)”.

LEGO Factory

The LEGO Factory In Mexico

The LEGO Group outsourced LEGO production in Mexico to Flextronics in 2006. Due to production and distribution problems, the LEGO Group insourced production and moved from the Flextronics factory to a new factory in Monterrey. The factory is expanded within two years and two molding facilities are built which house a total of 768 molding machines.

Again, the LEGO Group is concerned with Environmental factors and rainwater is collected in large tanks to be recycled in the cooling system of the factory. Yet another expansion is announced in 2015, including molding, processing, packaging, and warehousing.

The New LEGO Factory In Vietnam

The LEGO Group’s sixth factory will be located in the Binh Duong Province in Vietnam and will be the first carbon-neutral run factory. The factory will contain solar panels on the roof and will contain solar parks, creating enough renewable energy to fully match the factory’s annual energy requirements. The factory will also use electric vehicles and be supplied with energy-efficient production equipment.

The LEGO Group will also plant 50,000 trees in Vietnam to replace all the trees removed for the construction of the factory. The new factory operates and produces the high-quality product that is created in all the other factories of the LEGO Group. Local employees will receive the same high-level training as all the other LEGO factories worldwide to create the same high-quality product for which the LEGO brand is known. This will ensure that each brick made at this factory will meet the accuracy of 1/10th of a hair width so it will exactly with bricks and other elements made since 1932.

The New LEGO Factory In Virginia, U.S.A.

The LEGO Group’s new and seventh factory is estimated to open and begin production in the second half of 2025. The LEGO Group is investing US $1 billion to build a 1.7 million square foot (160,000 square meters) in Chesterfield County, Virginia, located just south of Richmond.

The carbon-neutral facility will have an onsite solar park that will match 100 percent of the daily energy needs. The plant will bring an estimated 1,760 jobs to Virginia.

There are already approximately 2,600 people that work for the LEGO Group in the U.S. in its head office in Enfield, CT and across over 100 branded stores across the country.

Is There A LEGO Factory In Canada?

There are no LEGO factories currently located in Canada.  The factories in Virginia and Mexico provide LEGO for the Canadian market.  But who knows? This may all change in the future as LEGO keeps expanding.

Where Do LEGO Parts Ship From?

The LEGO factory is located in Billund, Denmark. Every year, millions of LEGO bricks are shipped from the LEGO factory to LEGO fans worldwide.

Where Is The Biggest LEGO Factory Located?

The biggest LEGO factory is located in the Czech Republic. It covers an area of 140,000 square meters and employs over 4,500 people. In terms of production, the LEGO factory in the Czech Republic is the largest in the world.

Final Thoughts

The LEGO Group has factories all around the world in order to be closer to its market and to have a smaller ecological footprint. The locations of these factories are in Denmark, the Czech Republic, China, Hungary, Mexico and soon-to-be in Vietnam and the United States. Each factory is designed with sustainability in mind, from the solar panels on the rooftop to the electric vehicles used for transportation.

The company takes pride in ensuring that each brick made at their factories meets the accuracy of 1/10th of a hair width so it will exactly with bricks and other elements made since 1932. This allows LEGO fans worldwide to know they’re getting a quality product no matter where they purchase it.

Exclusive look at the 2022 LEGO Inside Tour set – 4000037 LEGO Factory AGV

lego factory tour ct

Last October, The LEGO Group announced that the Inside Tour would be making a return in 2022, following 2-year hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

For those that are unaware, the LEGO Inside Tour is the ultimate fan experience, giving LEGO fans unprecedented access to the inner workings of the LEGO Group, where you can see how LEGO bricks are produced, meet the designers and take a tour through the LEGO Group’s unique history in Ole Kirk’s original house.

One of the highlights of the Inside Tour is the Inside Tour set, a specially designed set that is only given out to Inside Tour attendees. There’s a different model each year, making this one of the most exclusive and sought-after LEGO sets in the world.

Check out the complete list of LEGO Inside Tour sets on Brickset

One of my readers, Andrzej Antoszkiewicz was lucky enough to attend the LEGO Inside Tour 2022 , and very kindly offered his time, and photos retelling his experience.

I’ll have a full writeup of Andrzej’s Inside Tour experience soon, but wanted to share the Inside Tour set first.

So… *drumroll please*, here’s an exclusive look at the 2022 LEGO Inside Tour set – 4000037 LEGO Factory AGV!

lego factory tour ct

Here’s a look at the packaging, which is signed by Stuart Harris, the instruction book designer as well as The LEGO Group’s Senior Vice President Engineering & Corporate Quality (John Hansen).

As you can tell, the sets are numbered, and so there are at least 80 of these sets in existence.

The text on the back of the box contains various facts about the AGVs at the Danish Konmarken Factory:

  • The AGVS run on electricity and are charged each time they collect and offload boxes at the terminal. Each charging takes around 1 minute.
  • 1 minute is enough for the vehicles, to regain the power used for driving one trip around in the molding hall, collecting 4 boxes.
  • On average, each AGV drives 23.5 kilometres per day.
  • During a full production year, each AGV covers almost 8,500 kilometres.
  • Each AGV transports on average 420 boxes per day.
  • With an average box weight of 17 kilos, each vehicle transports 71 tons per day, which adds up to around 2,600 tons per year.
  • The combination of the AGV, the fully automated warehouse logistics and the fully automat ed packing process means that LEGO bricks are not touched by human hands until the set is unpacked and built

And here’s the complete text:

On an average day at the LEGO factory “Kornmarken”, each of the robot-like AGVs lifts and transports around 7.1 tons of LEGO bricks – and they do it all by themselves with no one to steer them around. In this year’s exclusive LEGO Inside Tour set, we salute the hard-working AGVS.

When visiting the LEGO factory “Kornmarken” in Billund, you of course notice the huge moulding machines that each day pour out millions of LEGO bricks. But what you will also notice is the robot like vehicles that move around on the factory floor. collecting big plastic boxes that the moulding machines have filled with LEGO bricks, and replacing the boxes with new empty ones. These are the Automated Guided Vehicles – or AGVS as they are commonly known.

Fully automatic The AGVS are part of the logistics flow in the factory. They collect and transport boxes with LEGO bricks, But looking closer at this process, it becomes more intricate: The AGV receives a message from one of the moulding machines saying that the box collecting the brand-new LEGO bricks will soon be full. The AGV then picks up an empty box and heads out to the moulding machine. It collects the filled box, replaces it with an empty one, and heads back to the terminal where the filled box is offloaded to the conveyer belt and then transported to the high bay warehouse for storing. All of this is done 100% automatically.

Safe driving As the name suggests, the AGVs are driving around the factory without anyone steering them. Guiding them and keeping them on track are magnets, placed in the floor half a metre apart. The AGVs are all equipped with laser scanners that can detect obstacles on their way, so that the AGV can either steer around, slow down or even stop completely. This combined with an average speed of 1.1 metre per second makes the AGVs very safe drivers.

AGVs since 1987 The LEGO factory “Kornmarken” has 41 AGVS in total. The oldest one has been working the factory

floor since March 2009, and the newest one is from 2016. But in fact, there have been AGVS at “Kornmarken” since the factory opened in 1987.

The AGVS have always been a textbook example of cutting-edge LEGO technology. Since 1987, the AGVS have been continuously updated and replaced in order for them to always meet the highest technological standards as well as the highest quality and safety standards.

On the back of the box sleeve, there’s also a photo of the Inside Tour group that Andrzej was part of, making this a really great personalised memento.

lego factory tour ct

The initial design of the set was done by Stuart Harris , the Master Builder at LEGO House who recently worked on 40503 Dagny Holm , the 3rd LEGO House exclusive. The set was then finished off by Steen sig Anderson , a legendary designer who returned from retirement this year just to put the finishing touches to this model.

Now, let’s see what the set looks like.

lego factory tour ct

This year’s set is quite simple, but I like that it features one of LEGO’s key advancements, around their operations. It’s quite a simple design, but the AGVs are so instrumental to how elements get produced, packed, and packaged into sets – all with nearly zero human intervention.

Andrzej describes learning about this on the Inside Tour, and how it’s truly special that when bricks or LEGO elements are formed in the moulding machine, they don’t come into contact with human hands – so the first touch that virgin LEGO elements have is with you, the consumer, when you open the numbered bags in a set.

It’s really profound when you think about it that way.

lego factory tour ct

I believe the blue panels are printed, with LEGO Minifigure motifs that might look familiar if you’ve been to a LEGO Group office, or factory, as well as the AGV’s number (there are 41 in total in the Billund Kornmarken Factory!).

For the parts connoisseurs, I believe the Bright Light Blue crates are a brand new colour variant, and has never been produced ever – so I’m not sure if they will actually make their way to a regular production set, or if it will be exclusive to the AGV Inside Tour set.

For comparison, here’s what the real life AGVs look like.

lego factory tour ct

You can also watch these videos below to see them zipping around

But wait, that’s not all.

One of the great things about LEGO is that they always seem to go above and beyond to deliver incredible experiences to their consumers. Sure, they don’t always get it right, but the intention is there – from the way they do customer service, to the incredible creations that come out of Billund.

Andrzej attended the Inside Tour with his wife, and daughter Ada, who was 3 months old at the time of the tour. Andrzej only had incredible things to say about the hospitality of the Inside Tour team, and how welcome and integral they made Ada (and his wife) feel throughout the tour.

lego factory tour ct

As a special surprise for Ada (who is officially the youngest Inside Tour participant ever!), the designers went one step further, creating a one-of-a-kind miniature Inside Tour set, with a “baby” AGV!

The Baby AGV is adorable, firstly because its a scaled down version of the Inside Tour model, but also has a baby on it (cute), and some even more special inclusions. There’s a sticker, with the LEGO Ideas House mascot, and the number 90 (presumably to celebrate LEGO’s 90th Anniversary), making this a truly unique model.

I wonder if we’ll see this sticker appear somewhere, or if it was custom-designed for this event.

lego factory tour ct

Super rare and cool, and such a great little memento to commemorate Ada’s Inside Tour presence, something that she might not remember, but a cool souvenir that she can appreciate when she’s older.

So yeah, I’m very honoured to be able to share some of the first photos of the 2022 LEGO Inside Tour set, and a very special thanks to Andrzej, for taking the time to share his story.

I’ll also be recapping Andrzej and his family’s Inside Tour experience, giving you an inside look at the Inside Tour, to help demystify what goes on inside the Tour.

If you want to one day attend an Inside Tour (you’ll have to join a ballot to be selected), check out the Inside Tour page on the LEGO House website.

A huge thank you once again to Andrzej for sharing these photos, and Inside Tour experience!

A tour of the LEGO® Ideas Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas set

In 1993, the world got its first glimpse of Halloween Town and met the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington. Ever since then, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas has been a favorite seasonal movie all around the world.

With its distinct claymation characters, unique and darkly delightful Tim Burton world and its catchy songs by Danny Elfman, this movie really has something for everyone.

Now, we prepare ourselves for a trip to Halloween Town with the LEGO® Ideas Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas set. But turning this iconic movie into a LEGO set was no small feat, so we spoke to two designers from the design team to find out how they did it.

This is Halloween!

“I absolutely was a fan of the movie,” says designer César Soares. “I’ve lost count of the times I watched it!”

“I was too scared to watch it when I was younger!” adds designer Laura Perron. “But when I watched it for the first time, I just fell in love with the style and feel of the world.”

Both designers knew that capturing that style and feel was crucial. So, how did they approach the design process?

“By watching the movie again and again and trying to capture as many details as we could,” says César, making his job sound like enjoyable work.

But, Laura adds, there’s more to it than just casually watching.

“We looked at the fan submission and identified what locations and characters are important,” she says. “Then we watched those key scenes over and over to highlight the important details that we needed to include. It was also helpful to look at behind-the-scenes images and production photos. This movie was stop-motion animated by hand, so thankfully there were a few behind-the-scenes images where we could see the whole set and get a sense of the layout.”

It’s our town, everybody scream!

The final set features connectible models of three iconic Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas locations, including Spiral Hill, the Halloween Town Hall and Jack Skellington’s house.

The house has a removable roof that reveals Jack’s formula for Christmas and you can place Jack on the lectern in the Town Hall ready to give his speech.

It captures the off-beat architectural style perfectly, but designing for this environment did come with its challenges.

“The LEGO brick building system is famous for its grid, but in the movie, there are deliberately no straight lines,” says Laura. “It was fun to find ways to make everything look crooked and spindly but still strong and stable.”

The process has led to a wonderful 2,193-piece set that measures over 20 in. (51 cm) wide and is going to make the perfect display for Halloween or Christmas (or both!)

Wouldn’t you like to see something strange?

The quirky, unique design didn’t just extend to the locations though, everyone who has seen Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas will know that it’s packed with unforgettable characters.

Our designers believe that this motley cast of characters plays a big part in why people love the movie.

“The characters are many and rich,” says César.

And Laura adds, “The character design is so distinct and bold and iconic. At first glance, you see this dark world filled with creatures, but the movie has so much heart that you really come to love these characters.”

This set features 8 of these characters, including Jack Skellington, Sally, Santa Claus (or should that be Sandy Claws?), Lock, Shock and Barrel minifigures, plus Zero the dog and a brick-built The Mayor figure with two faces.

I want it for my own!

There aren’t many movies that blend such very different holidays into a single story. Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a light-hearted Halloween movie or a dark Christmas movie? The fact that this question is impossible to answer has always been part of its unique charm.

Now, we’re delighted to bring that charm to the LEGO Ideas Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas set and to let you bring a little bit of Halloween Town to your very own home.
