How to Shop for The Best Luggage: Things to Consider

Best Luggage Brands

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, week-long camping trip, or semester abroad, luggage will help you get your things from one place to the next. Depending on your trip, you might want to consider the size, quality, durability, and functionality of your luggage.

If you will be doing a lot of outdoor exploration, then you’ll want to look for something versatile and lightweight. Alternatively, if you’ll be in and out of airports, then you’ll want a suitcase that is practical, innovative, and can move with ease as you run to catch your flight.

Now that we’ve gone over some of the best luggage brands, the power is in your hands to decide where you want to make your purchase. Next, we’ll break down what aspects to look for when you’re considering your next travel companion.

Brand

When shopping for luggage, do your brand research beforehand. Different brands specialize in different things and some may not have what you’re looking for. Look into what customers have to say about the brand’s products before making any firm decisions.

Brands that have been in the industry for several decades is usually a good sign. Companies who offer lifetime warranties and 100-day trials indicate that they stand behind their products which is another green flag.

Product Range

Depending on how often you criss-cross the globe, you might want to look for accessories to accompany your luggage. If you’re in the market for a variety of long-lasting products or complete luggage sets, then it will be useful to buy from a brand that offers an extensive collection.

Brands such as TravelPro, Monos, and Heys provide you with a huge selection of products that go beyond a simple suitcase. However, if you’re a minimalist or don’t travel often, then one piece of luggage might be enough for you.

Materials and Sustainability

As more companies become aware of the global climate crisis, many are taking action to mitigate their carbon footprint. Today, several of the best luggage brands use recycled materials (such as water bottles) in their luggage design.

Another way brands are thinking about their environmental impact is by creating luggage that is built to last. Reducing overall production and encouraging consumers to repair their items rather than replacing them is the best way to help the planet.

Durability

If you travel often for work, then you may want to consider getting a sturdy piece of luggage that can handle a lot of wear and tear. Materials such as aluminum and polycarbonate will provide more security and protection against the weather than soft fabric.

Functionality

Although luggage can be fashionable, it’s important to prioritize the function of the product. Depending on the type of trip, this will determine what you should look for in terms of how your luggage operates.

Fleeing North America to somewhere coastal such as Portugal? You’ll want to make sure your luggage is going to maneuver with ease. A suitcase with rotating wheels and a comfy handle will be your best bet.

If you are going on a more intense outdoor trip, then opting for something you can carry with you will be the better choice.

Buying luggage doesn’t have to cost more than the flight ticket itself. Plenty of the best luggage brands listed above have an array of high-quality products that aren’t overly expensive.

The price of luggage will depend on factors such as size, features, materials, and style. A fine leather suitcase from Bric’s might set you back a bit more than a standard luggage piece from Samsonite. It really comes down to personal preference and the sort of trip you’ll be taking.

Is soft or hard luggage better?

Can’t decide between a hardshell case or a soft one? There are pros and cons to both types. Don’t worry, we’ll explain why.

First, a hardshell case will protect breakable items better, offering more security when it comes to your fragile pieces. That being said, hard shell cases can be very heavy and bulky which isn’t ideal for spontaneous adventures. Hardshell cases also tend to cost more.

As for soft shell cases, they’re typically better for carrying because they’re more flexible and comfortable than hard ones. Unfortunately, they can also rip and tear which is not ideal if you’re carrying anything fragile.

What is the best month to buy luggage?

Have your eye on a new piece of luggage? Before you go out and buy one as soon as possible, we suggest hitting pause and waiting until July or August.

The best month to buy luggage is August because it’s the end of the summer season and there is less demand for travel items. Many retailers will have end-of-summer sales for you to take advantage of.

What are standard luggage sizes?

Luggage comes in many different sizes. If you are going away for a weekend, then a carry-on will work well because it’s small and you’ll avoid baggage checks.

For more extensive trips, a small to large suitcase will be better. Keep in mind, anything that is over 22” will be considered checked baggage.

Here are the standard luggage measurements:

  • Carry-on: 17” to 22”
  • Small: 23” to 24”
  • Medium: 25” to 27”
  • Large: 28” to 32”

Final Thoughts

Now that you have an idea of the best luggage brands, it’s time to book your train ticket, order your luggage, and head somewhere new for a bit.

Platinum Elite First Class Luggage Set

Best for Frequent Flyers

Travelpro platinum elite first class luggage set.

If you're headed on a long trip or just consider yourself an over-packer, you might need more than one bag for your belongings (not to mention space to overfill with souvenirs on the way home). Instead of lugging around a hodgepodge of pieces, consider a luggage set. There's nothing more chic and put together than carrying a coordinating set of suitcases from the best luggage brands , complete with carry-on and checked bags. And if you're vacationing with kids or family, traveling with a matching set is a great way to keep track of all your bags. But with so many options to choose from, including different types of materials and all kinds of organizational features, it can be difficult to decide which luggage sets will look great, hold up to frequent use and really be worth the splurge.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test all kinds of luggage from popular brands, including hardside suitcases , softside luggage , carry-ons , checked suitcases and more. We review the luggage in our Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and share it with consumer testers who use it in their real lives. In recent years, we've tested suitcases from more than 80 brands. I used our testing data and categorical expertise when making my picks for the best luggage sets.

Samsonite consistently stands out in our Lab evaluations and has wowed our consumer testers . This luggage set includes two of our top-tested suitcases from the brand's Freeform collection — the smaller 21-inch carry-on model and the larger 28-inch checked bag. These suitcases are made of durable hardside material that performed well in our drop tests, resisting major damage after being released repeatedly at different angles from a set 3-foot height.

When we packed the suitcases with a standard load of items like clothing, shoes and accessories, we were impressed by how well everything fit inside with room to spare — even without having to use the 2-inch expansion system. One caveat: Some of our testers noted that the carrying handles on suitcases in this collection felt a bit tight, which made it more difficult to lift or lower the bags. However, the telescopic handles received higher scores for feeling sturdy and comfortable to use. Testers also appreciated how easily the suitcases navigated around twists and turns and said the 360-degree spinner wheels were smooth.

samsonite suitcases in a hallway

At less than $100 for three pieces, this basic American Tourister trio is an absolute steal and one of the best affordable luggage sets out there. While the softsided carry-on, checked bag and personal item may be simple, they're still full of practical features that make traveling easier like plenty of external pockets, interior mesh pockets and compression straps to secure your belongings.

The brand's bags aren't as durable as others we've tested in the Lab, so I recommend this set for someone who isn't planning to fly frequently. According to one GH analyst who has used this set for nearly a decade, the bags have still held up well to repeated use. She added that the softside polyester material is slightly worn with some fraying and scuffs, but the bags are still useable, and the important features, like the telescopic handles and zippers, are in working condition. When we evaluated other suitcases from American Tourister, testers highlighted the smooth and stable wheels, and online reviewers say they roll nicely, despite only moving forward and backward.

luggage bags are lined up in a room

Originally designed by a pilot for other pilots who are always on the go, Travelpro's luggage is the perfect pick for the frequent flyer, and I'm particularly impressed by the brand's Platinum Elite collection. The softside suitcases were some of the top performers in our durability tests , withstanding repeated dropping without dents or damage. The nylon material resisted signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth with our abrasion tester. They are heavier than many of the other bags we tested, but they are durable bags built to last.

The suitcases are thoughtfully designed with a tapered expansion system that prevents the bags from tipping over when full. Self-aligning spinner wheels let you push and pull in all directions, and cushioned handles with contoured grips add a comfortable feel. Plus, they're packed full of extras inside like expandable garment bags, toiletries bags and hidden USB ports to charge electronic devices (power bank not included). Our testers gave luggage in this collection high scores for ease of use and highlighted the sturdiness of the telescopic handle. If you're nervous about committing to the high price tag, the brand offers a 100-day return policy, even for used suitcases.

Amazon Basics 2-Piece Set Hardside Spinner

2-Piece Set Hardside Spinner

Not only does this two-piece luggage set from Amazon Basics have more than 35,000 five-star reviews, but it also earned high scores in our Lab evaluations and was loved by our testers. The carry-on and checked suitcase both unfold into two main packing compartments, one with compression straps to keep your belongings in place and another with a full zippered panel for even more security. When we packed the carry-on bag in the Lab, we fit an entire weekend's worth of gear including clothing, shoes and toiletries with room to spare. Plus, both of the suitcases expand for even more space.

The hardside suitcases are made of lightweight ABS plastic that keeps the price low, though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some other suitcases we tested. It did hold up well in our drop tests though, with no serious denting or breakage after being released repeatedly from a set 3-foot height. When testers rolled the suitcases through our luggage obstacle course, around turns and over different surfaces from wood to carpeting, they were impressed by the maneuverability and wheel performance.

Calpak Ambeur 2-Piece Luggage Set

Ambeur 2-Piece Luggage Set

For luggage that looks as great as it performs, I recommend Calpak's Ambeur two-piece luggage set, which offers the best of fashion and function. Available in five fun metallic shades that are sure to stand out at baggage claim, the bags are made of a composite of polycarbonate and ABS plastic that aced our Lab tests for durability. They also proved water-resistant in our evaluations, but did show noticeable markings after we dragged a wire across the surface during our scratch-resistance tests.

The bags are GH-tester favorites and earned top marks for their performance in our luggage obstacle course which had testers pull the suitcases over different surfaces and around sharp turns. Testers especially loved the sturdy and easy-to-use telescopic handle. When we assessed the suitcases in the Lab, we were impressed by the zippers that opened and closed with ease. The spacious interior compartments were able to hold our entire packing load of items including clothing, shoes and toiletries. Both the carry-on and checked bag are expandable and equipped with zippered organizational pockets, compression straps and a removable toiletries bag. For even more organization, you can try Calpak's top-tested packing cubes too.

Delsey Paris Helium DLX Softside Expandable Luggage

Helium DLX Softside Expandable Luggage

As the name implies, these Delsey Helium DLX suitcases are some of the lightest we've evaluated in the Lab. No more lugging around bulky bags or struggling to lift your carry-on into the overhead bin. Despite being so lightweight, these bags are tough. In our tests for durability, the luggage held up well after being released repeatedly in our drop tests, and the softside nylon material showed no signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth 15,000 times by our abrasion tester.

In our evaluations, we found the exterior zippers a bit tricky to use, and the bags received lower scores for maneuverability than other suitcases we tried, but they did earn high scores for their comfortable gripped telescopic handles and for being easy to pack. All three of the suitcases open into one primary packing compartment with compression straps, and the lids of each bag are equipped with zippered pockets and elastic sleeves for additional storage. There are removable bi-fold organizers inside as well. I particularly love that the linings can be unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

Monos For Your Special Someone Luggage Set

For Your Special Someone Luggage Set

Designed with simplicity in mind, this two-piece set from luggage brand Monos has a sleek, modern look that our testers love. Both of the bags opened to reveal two spacious compartments that were able to fit our entire load of items in our packing tests. The carry-on bag features an adjustable compression panel, while the larger checked bag is equipped with compression straps and a larger fabric panel to keep everything in place. What's more, there are plenty of organizational mesh pockets inside the bags, along with additional shoe bags and a laundry bag to separate your dirty clothes.

During Lab evaluations, the durable carry-on and checked suitcase resisted major denting and damage in our drop tests. Both we and our consumer testers noticed prominent scuffing on the suitcases after use, but the brand provides a sponge for cleaning. One GH analyst said the sponge removed most of the marks on her bag. In our luggage obstacle course, testers appreciated the smooth gliding wheels and loved how effortless it was to maneuver the bags around twists and turns. They also noticed how well the telescopic handles locked into place at four different heights for easy toting.

Away Set of 2 Classic

Set of 2 Classic

Popular luggage brand Away carries sets of its best-selling carry-on and large checked bag for a better value — $50 off the full retail price. The hardside suitcases are loved by testers who highlighted the streamlined look and the spacious, well-organized interior. The bags open into two separate packing compartments with zippered mesh panels and pockets for additional space. There's also an adjustable compression panel inside each bag so you can really stuff it full if you're an over-packer like me. When we packed the bags in the Lab, we appreciated how smoothly the zippers opened and closed and how much we could fit inside.

The polycarbonate material is super lightweight — even lighter than some of our favorite softside luggage — and ultra-durable. It performed well in our drop tests, remaining in great condition after being released multiple times from a set 3-foot height. In our scratch tests, the bags showed minimal scuffs and markings. One caveat: Our consumer testers gave the telescopic handle lower ratings for feeling a bit wobbly when fully extended. The bags received high scores for their maneuverability and smooth wheels. If you want to add a personal touch to your luggage set, Away offers monograms of up to three letters for an added fee.

Béis Luggage Set of Two

Luggage Set of Two

If you're on Instagram or TikTok, chances are that you've come across viral luggage brand Béis . Actress Shay Mitchell's trendsetting travel brand offers carry-ons, checked bags, weekender bags and more — all thoughtfully designed. The suitcases feature details like cushy padded telescopic handles, a retractable strap to hold a small bag or your travel blanket and a built-in weight indicator to let you know if your bag exceeds 50 pounds. I'm especially a fan of the chic monochromatic color options — even the metal of the telescopic handle matches.

When we tested the brand's suitcases in the Textiles Lab, my fellow GH analysts and I were impressed by how well the luggage withstood dents and damage after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. We did note that the material was more prone to scratches and scuffs than other luggage we tested. The suitcases open butterfly style, exposing a spacious zippered compartment and a compartment with a secure compression strap. A few smaller pockets help keep your things organized. You can choose which pieces to include in your luggage set , so the price and number of pieces vary depending on your selections.

Eagle Creek Migrate 110L Wheeled Duffel Bag

Migrate 110L Wheeled Duffel Bag

Whether you prefer traveling with a duffel, want something that will hold up to your outdoor adventures or are looking for a more sustainable luggage option, Eagle Creek has you covered. The brand's Migrate duffels are sold individually, but I like how you can build your own set with five sizes ranging from 40L to 130L. Each bag is convertible: You can carry it with the attached handles or wear it on your shoulders like a backpack. The larger checked sizes can also be tilted back to roll on the ground with the built-in wheels, while the smaller duffels (like the brand's 40L duffel ) make a convenient carry-on.

All of the bags are made of 100% recycled polyester with a TPU coating that's water-resistant and easy to wipe clean. Plus, it's super durable, and one GH analyst who regularly travels with Eagle Creek duffels says the material holds up well to rough use. The duffels have a wide opening to make packing a breeze, and the large zipper tabs are convenient and easy to pull. Once your bag is packed, you can buckle the outer compression straps to secure your belongings.

How we test the best luggage

double line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test all kinds of luggage to determine which pieces are worth buying. We evaluate luggage in the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and share it with consumer testers who bring the luggage on their own trips and then provide us with valuable feedback. Here's what we look for when we test suitcases:

  • Size and weight: To ensure that the brands' listed dimensions for the suitcases are accurate, we measure each bag in the Lab. We weigh the bags and place carry-ons in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to make sure the suitcases meet most airline restrictions.

The Best Carry-On Luggage, According to the CNET Staff Who Use Them

Travel is finally back, and good luggage is a must. Here's our favorite carry-on luggage for you to choose from.

Our Experts

bon voyage luggage review

  • 6 years working professionally in the 3D printing space / 4 years testing consumer electronics for large websites.

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

Gray Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L backpack on a blue shirted man

If you're planning summer travel, securing durable, convenient carry-on luggage should be at the top of your list -- especially with rising airline baggage fees . Luckily, the CNET team travels often for work, frequently for short trips to conventions, conferences or expos, so we know what the difference is between a good and great carry-on. Read on to learn about the best carry-on luggage according to the CNET staff who use them.

We've pulled together some of our favorite carry-on luggage from across the teams at CNET to give you some idea of what might work for you. These are not the "tested in CNET Labs" products -- that list is coming soon -- but the ones that we use in our day-to-day lives.

Great for small trips

Peak design everyday backpack 30l.

OK, this isn't technically luggage, but it is a day pack that's big enough to handle overnight trips alone or as a clutch secondary bag to handle electronics and whatever wouldn't fit in your main suitcase. Although large, it fits under every airplane seat I've flown on and is so durable I can throw it around or leave it in the rain without worrying. Most Peak Design fans recommend the smaller 20L, but I opted for the 30L so I could take it on trips. It has padding and Velcro-secured dividers for cameras and other fragile equipment, with plenty of pockets and space for phones, tablets and laptops.

The side zippers make it easy to grab items deep in the main compartment, while the abundance of outer handles makes it easy to yank the bag out of car trunks and overhead bins. Lastly, there are little hook and anchor points to tie down even more luggage if you need it. It's truly versatile.  -- David Lumb

A great budget option

Skyline softside carry on spinner.

I'm not much of a traveler, but I do keep a pretty basic carry-on bag around for the times when I do need to pack a few things for a quick trip. I've been using this carry-on bag, the smallest piece of a larger set I purchased at Target for my last few trips, and I really couldn't ask for more from a bag. It has a fairly sturdy handle for wheeling the bag around to your destination and four wheels to help guide it along easily. Inside, there's one big compartment with a zipped pouch at the top. There are straps at the bottom to secure your items, and the outside of the bag has two zipped areas as well. You can expand it by unzipping one of the sections, in case you are one of those who pack a lot of stuff and like to push the limits of your suitcases. It's not a hardshell suitcase, and it may not be designed to last forever, but at this price, it's perfect for anyone who may not travel often or need something expensive.

A simple hard case

Kenneth cole reaction.

This Kenneth Cole carry-on suitcase has lasted several years and survived many trips being shoved into the overhead bin or thrown in with other suitcases getting checked last-minute at the gate. It's lightweight with a hard shell, and its four wheels spin in any direction, making it easy to navigate the airport. It has a sleek design and comes in 14 different colors. I don't use its inner organization system often, but my husband loves the zipper panel and straps that can hold in your clothes. The suitcase comes with a 10-year warranty, but it only covers craftsmanship and manufacturer defects. But based on my experience, it should hold up pretty well.

Perfect for a few days of light travel

Venture duffle bag from bellroy.

When I'm going on a short trip, I don't want to tote around a large piece of luggage. This is where the Venture duffle bag from Bellroy comes in handy. It's not only long-lasting but is also fashionable and practical in its design, which is exactly what I need to keep my trips stress-free. It features a huge main compartment that is capable of holding a week's worth of clothes (if you roll them up) and two pairs of shoes when you use the complementary stuff sack. This bag is water-resistant, leather-free, and has a minimalistic design. I thought that after stuffing everything in my bag I would struggle to carry it around, but the padding on the strap made it a cinch to move it about. I can even fit a laptop and other necessary accessories safely. While I'd love a thicker strap all around, when I'm going on short trips, bringing this Venture duffle along just makes it easier to get up and go.

Fashion and function

Sole premise commuter bag.

As an avid sneaker fan, I like having more than one pair of shoes with me on my trips. I usually have one comfortable pair to walk around with that is also what I wear to the airport, another pair that goes well with multiple outfits, and a third pair to show off a bit. That's why I bought the Sole Premise Commuter Bag earlier in the year. The bag consists of two compartments for sneakers although you can fit clothes in there as well. Then it has the rest of the standard spacing for a laptop, tablets, other accessories and so on. On my last trip, I was able to pack three pairs of shoes and my multiple devices, including my Nintendo Switch, while still being able to fit it under the seat in front of me.

TSA compatible locks built in

Coolife luggage spinner suitcase (20-inch).

I generally only buy name-brand luggage, so when my partner bought this suitcase from Amazon, I shrugged at it and figured it might not hold up. To my surprise, it's been a great little carry-on that's served us well in the eight-plus months we've had it. I just took it on a four-day trip and managed to fit more clothing in it than I thought it could ever hold. Not only that, but it was light and easy to lift into an overhead bin. The handle extends easily, the wheels work well. For the price, don't expect the highest quality, but I have no complaints. It has all the basics you'd want -- zippered compartments, an interior strap to compress clothing and a built-in TSA lock.

The only bag you'll need

Nomatic travel backpack.

If you want one backpack that'll work for your daily commute, a day trip or weekend away or as an airplane carry-on, this is it. I continue to be amazed at how well-designed this bag is every time I use it, and it truly feels like the company thought of everything.

The main compartment gives you enough room for your lunch, a jacket, books and whatever else you might carry on including a hard case for sunglasses. Like many travel bags, there's a zipper around the outside (all the zippers are weather-sealed, by the way) that expands the size to give you space for shoes and clothes for a day or two. What's unique is that when you expand the bag, it reveals another zipper that opens the backpack like a clamshell for easy packing.

At nearly $300, it's expensive to be used as just a carry-on. Given the bag's design flexibility, it might be the only bag you need.

Delsey Paris Luggage Review: Bon Voyage To You

You want to get a Delsey Paris suitcase, but aren’t really sure? Well, you’re in the right place – everything you want to know about the luggage is right here in this review!

DELSEY Paris Chatelet Hard+ Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Champagne White, Checked-Medium 24 Inch

Delsey Paris Sky Max

DELSEY Paris Sky Max Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Navy Blue, Checked-Medium 25 Inch

Delsey Paris is actually a very popular brand. Lots of people who can’t really afford suitcases that tend to be really expensive (ahem Tumi), will pick these up instead. But is there more to them, than the attractive price tag?

Plus, bear in mind that not all of their suitcases are exactly cheap. But they are made from premium materials and have lots of different features. So, let’s check out everything that these French suitcases have to offer!

Top Product Overview

The hardshells.

DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Brushed Charcoal, Carry-On 19 Inch

Let’s kick off the review strong, with one of Delsey’s all-time best-sellers . The Helium Aero collection is is a crowd favorite, with thousands of positive reviews and 5-star ratings. This luggage collection features 4 Polycarbonate suitcases, one of which is an international carry-on – the 19”.  That suitcase is also unique because it feature s an external zippered compartment for your electronics ; something we rarely see on hardside luggage.

The Aero suitcases all feature  double spinner wheels that roll quietly. They are also pretty smooth and give you great maneuverability of your luggage. The wheel handle helps with that – it’s extendable and double-barrel, and it locks into position when extended. There is also  a TSA combination lock on all of these suitcases , that will give you some peace of mind in your travels.

There are also two carry handles – top and side – and they are padded and soft  so that you can comfortably lift up your packed suitcase. Pretty useful, especially since the wheel handle doesn’t really have any padding.

These Delsey suitcases have an expandable capacity,  which is perfect if you like to do some shopping on your trips . Both packing compartments in the Aero are fully lined, but only one of them has a zippered divider with pockets.  The other compartment features tie-down straps to keep your clothes in place, as well as a single pocket.

  • Helium Aero 25” - Dimensions: 25” x 17.5” x 11.5”, Weight: 10.2 lbs
  • Helium Aero 29” - Dimensions: 29” x 19.5” x 12.5”, Weight: 12.5 lbs

Delsey Paris Helium Titanium

DELSEY Paris Titanium Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Silver, Carry-On 19 Inch

The Titanium luggage  is actually pretty similar to the Aero collection. These are also  made from pure Polycarbonate,  and so they have excellent impact resistance and durability. One difference is that these Delsey suitcases have  a matte finish,  unlike the metallic finish of the Aero luggage. They are also slightly heavier, but it’s not a too big difference.

This luggage features  double spinner wheels and a telescopic wheel handle that locks into position when extended . These features give you  great maneuverability of your suitcase  and help you get from point A to point B with the Titanium effortlessly. There is also  a TSA lock on all of them , that makes all of your belongings perfectly safe.

The  smallest suitcase out of the bunch has an external electronics compartment,  which includes a padded laptop sleeve. The larger suitcases don’t have this, but they do have two fully lined packing compartments with expandable capacity. The  bottom compartment features tie-down straps and a zippered pocket,  while the top compartment has a full zippered divider with a mesh pocket.

The  top and side carry handles on these suitcases are padded and soft . Also, the Titanium suitcases are slightly cheaper than the Aero ones, especially the smaller options. If you’re interested, you can read  a more detailed comparison  I did on these two Delsey collections.

Delsey Paris Alexis

DELSEY PARIS Alexis Durable Luggage Set, Expandable & Lightweight 4-Wheel Spinners, Easy Grip handles for Smooth Journeys, TSA-Lock Incorporated, Men and Women, Burgundy, 3-Piece Set (21'/25'/29')

The Alexis collection  mostly features sets of suitcases. You can get the smallest one individually, but all the others are only available in 2-piece and 3-piece sets, so keep that in mind. They are great value for money though since a set of three suitcases will cost you less than $250.

One thing to note is that  the smallest suitcase is 24” tall with the wheels and the handle, so it might not be the best option as a carry-on. You won’t have issues with some domestic US airlines, but most European airlines won’t let you bring it in the cabin.

All of these suitcases are  made from ABS plastic, which is not really as durable as Polycarbonate . Since it is plastic, it will break and not bend upon hard impact – hence the lower prices. But they are  more scratch-resistant, especially because of their grained texture . And you get  double spinner wheels  on all of them, which roll really smoothly.

The suitcases have  interlocking zippers, which keep all of your belongings secure. But that’s all you get in terms of the safety of your items – there are  no TSA locks on this Delsey luggage.  Their interior consists of two packing compartments- one has elastic cross straps, and the other has a mesh divider without any pockets. Overall, it’s pretty easy to see why  the Alexis suitcases are your cheapest hardshell option  since they lack some really important features.

Check the links below to see the Alexis suitcases on Amazon:

  • Alexis 3-piece set
  • Alexis 21″ & 29″
  • Alexis 21” & 25”
  • Affordable prices
  • Double spinner wheels
  • ABS is not as durable as Polycarbonate
  • No TSA lock
  • Not a lot of pockets

DELSEY Paris Chatelet Hard+ Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Champagne White, Checked-Medium 24 Inch

The Chatelet collection is one of the more popular Delsey luggage collections. And we have  reviewed it before  on this site. It features three hardshell suitcases that have  shells made from virgin Polycarbonate, as well as leather accents . The suitcases look elegant and stylish, and they are available in two colors – brown and crème. I wouldn’t really recommend the lighter option if you’re worried about maintenance since it will get dirty pretty quickly.

But the suitcases are  pretty durable.  They feature Securitech zippers for maximum security of your belongings, as well as a TSA-friendly lock.  Plus,  the front wheels can be locked , so that your suitcase can’t roll away from you if you’re just standing somewhere. That’s a really useful feature and one that you don’t see too often.

The  wheels are double spinner and they roll quietly and smoothly.  And they match the color of the shell of the suitcase, which is a really nice touch. There is also  the double-barrel wheel handle that helps you maneuver the luggage with ease.  Also,  the top and side grab handles are soft and sturdy, for ultimate carrying comfort.

The interior of these is really something else. For one thing, it is bright red and it looks really chic. But I find it more interesting that there are  full-panel zippered dividers in both compartments , with lots of pockets on top of them. Also, you get  a hanger inside the suitcases, as well as laundry and shoe bags , which make it really easy to organize all of your clothes.

Delsey Paris Chromium Lite

DELSEY PARIS Chromium Lite 21-Inch Spinner Carry-On With Expansion (Emerald Green)

The Chromium Lite suitcases are pretty interesting because all of them except the 19” one have  full panel dividers in the bottom compartment.  Their top compartments feature tie-down straps and pockets – usually, it is vice versa. So, if you’re in the mood to switch up your packing habits, these might be the suitcases to get. The  smallest suitcase in this collection also has an external compartment for your electronics and any items you’d like to have easily accessible , which is great for carry-on luggage.

Additionally, the larger Chromium suitcases have  weight indicators built into the side handles . They will let you know if your luggage weighs more than 50 lbs, which is pretty useful for checked bags. It’s also useful because they have an expandable capacity  – a feature that makes it super easy to go overboard and pack more than you are allowed.

The luggage is made from  100% Polycarbonate, so it is very durable.  The shell of the suitcases is able to bend upon impact, and it is less likely to crack under pressure. But, it is  prone to scratches , so consider investing in a luggage cover if you want your Chromium suitcases to look brand new for a longer time.

These suitcases also feature recessed TSA locks, a spinner wheel that allow for both 2-wheel and 4-wheel use, non-slip carry handles for your comfort and a telescopic wheel handle that makes moving around the airport with these a breeze. They are a good choice if you’re looking for innovative luggage that has lots of new features to try out.

  • Chromium Lite 25” - Dimensions: 24” x 16.5” x 11.5”, Weight: 9.8 lbs

The Softshells

Delsey paris helium sky 2.0.

DELSEY Paris Checked-Medium, Black, One Size

The Sky 2.0 luggage  is  made from MicroBallistec Polyester.  It is  lightweight and really durable, with a vapor barrier that protects your items inside the suitcases. This Delsey collection includes three individual suitcases, as well as three different sets – one includes three pieces of luggage, while the other two feature a carry-on a checked bag.

There are  single spinner wheels on this luggage,  which is something you don’t really see too often on softsides – especially for this price. T hey are quiet and roll pretty smoothly, so you have excellent maneuverability of your luggage. The  wheel handle is telescopic, and it locks in an extended position.

Also, there are  two recessed grab handles that are pretty soft and comfortable , for when you need to quickly pick up your suitcase. The  zippers are self-repairing and interlocking,  so even though you don’t really have a lock, you don’t have to worry about the safety of your things. And there are  three external zippered pockets,  including a padded pocket for your electronics.

The  packing compartment is pretty spacious and it has expandable capacity.  There are tie-down straps in it to keep your clothes organized, as well as a single zippered compartment. The  top lid of the suitcase features a zippered pocket and a water-resistant pocket,  as well as a suiter section for any clothes you don’t want to get wrinkled.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Navy Blue, Checked-Medium 25 Inch

The Sky Max suitcases are made from pretty much the same material as the Sky 2.0 –  MicroBallistec Polyester with a vapor barrier.  It makes the suitcases  lightweight and durable; in fact, these are the most lightweight Delsey suitcases in this review. If that’s a priority of yours, then these suitcases are really a great choice.

They feature  single spinner wheels that allow for both 2-wheel and 4-wheel use, so you can wheel it around however you want. It is pretty easy to maneuver, especially thanks to the telescopic wheel handle. And there are also  two carry handles that are padded with neoprene, so they are really soft and comfortable.

Delsey Paris Montmartre

DELSEY Paris Spinner Suitcase, Bordeaux Red, One Size

The Montmartre suitcases are  made from 680d ballistic nylon with teflon treatment . Nylon is usually more durable than polyester, so you can really expect these suitcases to last you for years. Plus, the  teflon treatment provides additional protection against debris and moisture, which is perfect for frequent travelers.

This luggage is equipped with  double spinner wheels, which is actually really great. They are super smooth and quiet, and you will be able to maneuver the luggage super easily. You also have  a dual locking telescopic wheel handle , which further improves the ease of moving around with the luggage.

One big bonus of these suitcases is that they have  TSA combination locks  – a must if you frequently travel to the US. Plus, it really gives you some peace of mind for the security of your things. But the lock comes at a price –  the Montmartre suitcases are on the pricier side, especially for softshell luggage.

There is  one large external compartment, which is great for any last-minute items you remember to pack. But not really that great for organization. But no worries – the interior helps in that area since it has  four internal pockets . One of those pockets can also be accessed from the exterior, so it is great for any dirty items you’d want to keep separate. Oh, and the capacity of the packing compartment is expandable  – great for everyone who loves to shop on holidays!

Delsey Paris Cruise Lite

DELSEY Paris Cruise Lite Softside 25' Exp. Spinner Suiter Trolley, Blue, One Size

This Delsey luggage  is  made from 1680D ballistic nylon . The material itself is pretty durable, and the  corner guards help improve the overall durability of the suitcases. There are also four double spinner wheels, which give you excellent maneuverability of the luggage.

One of the best features of these suitcases is the organizational features. There are two padded sleeves for a tablet and laptop in the external front pocket, as well as a dedicated pocket for a power bank  so that you can charge your electronics on the go. And there is an additional easy-access compartment, which is great for your spare clothing.

The suitcases have  a pretty spacious packing compartment,  with several pockets in it and  expandable capacity . There are also tie-down straps in it, designed to keep your clothes from getting jumbled around. And the  lid of the suitcase has a couple more pockets on it, along with a full zippered divider  that makes organization a piece of cake.

The carry-on comes with a TSA-friendly pouch for your toiletries, which is pretty convenient. It’s actually one of the best choices for a carry-on, due to its durability and abundance of features. Just  pay attention to the color you are getting  – some are just a lot more expensive than others.

Delsey Paris Hyperglide

DELSEY Paris Hyperglide Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Black, Checked-Medium 25 Inch

Delsey’s Hyperglide suitcase collection is  made from polyester . It is a durable material, but not really as sturdy as nylon. These come with  four double spinner wheels that roll really smoothly and quietly. Unfortunately, there are no locks on these suitcases, so the safety of your belongings might be an issue.

One feature I really like is the  overweight indicator on the top of the Hyperglides.  It is especially useful with larger suitcases since it tells you immediately if you need to take some stuff out of your luggage to stay within the weight limits. Which you’ll want to do if you don’t want to pay the overweight baggage fees.

The  wheel handle is extendable and it has a rubberized grip  – a very useful little detail. Often times your hands will get sweaty when dragging your luggage around, and the rubber on the handle ensures you won’t ever accidentally drop your suitcase. The suitcases also have top, side, and bottom carry handles,  so it’s pretty easy to pick them up.

The  packing compartment on these is expandable and fully lined . But it doesn’t have a lot of pockets really. There’s  a single big zippered pocket on the lid and a smaller one inside the actual compartment.  Also, there are only two front pockets, which don’t really allow for great organization.

  • Hyperglide 25”
  • Hyperglide 29”
  • Hyperglide 3-piece set
  • Hyperglide 4-piece set
  • Really lightweight (about 2 lbs than shipping weight)
  • Overweight bag indicator
  • Rubberized grip on wheel handle
  • In-line skate wheels
  • No locks on these suitcases
  • Only two internal pockets
  • Hyperglide 21” - Dimensions: 20.5” x 13.5” x 9.5”, Weight: 8.15 lbs (shipping weight)
  • Hyperglide 25” - Dimensions: 24.5” x 11” x 17.2”, Weight: 10 lbs (shipping weight)
  • Hyperglide 29” - Dimensions: 29 x 19.5” x 12.25”, Weight: 13.4 lbs (shipping weight)

What To Look For

Hardside or softside.

This is the first thing you need to decide. If you’re looking for a suitcase to check at the airport, I definitely recommend a hardside.  They are a lot more durable than softshells or duffel bags, which is exactly what you need thanks to how “gentle” baggage handlers tend to be.

But for anything else, you are fine with either option.  I’d say it mostly comes to your packing preferences then.  Hardshell suitcases usually have two packing compartments, so they are a better option if you’re going to be sharing your suitcase with someone.  But softshells are much better if you want to organize stuff. They usually have lots of more internal and external pockets, which is better for some people.

Also, keep in mind that  softsides are generally lighter , but it’s not a huge difference. Usually, it’s just 1-2 lbs per suitcase, so it’s not really a reason to completely give up on the idea of a hardshell if you’re worried about weight.

Something else you should think about is  t he security of your luggage . Nearly all  hardside suitcases come with a lock, and usually, it is TSA friendly. But that’s not the case with softshells – they rarely feature locks and most of the time you need to buy a padlock yourself. So, if you want your luggage to be 100% secure, get a hardside suitcase. But if you’re not worried about that too much, then either one is a good option.

The last thing to consider is the price.  Softsides are generally the cheaper option, so go for that if you’re strapped for cash. Hardshell luggage, and Delsey one, in particular, is not really that cheap because of the quality of materials used in them. All of the hardside Delsey suitcases that I’ll show you are made from Polycarbonate – a durable and lightweight material that tends to be pretty expensive.

But keep in mind that  some hardsides in this review are actually cheaper than some softsides.  So definitely check the prices on Amazon first, before you completely make up your mind.

Size Of Suitcase

It is also really important that you get a suitcase that’s large enough for your needs.  Don’t get a 28” suitcase if you rarely go away for more than a few days at a time – you’ll barely ever use it, and you won’t get your money’s worth.

And if you plan on flying somewhere, check if your ticket includes a checked bag. If it doesn’t, you’re better off buying a carry-on. It’s actually pretty easy to pack enough clothes for a week in them, and you will wind up saving some money. I would also recommend a carry-on if you’re flying with some really valuable items and don’t really want your suitcase to be out of your sight.

But if you are going on longer trips or are sharing your suitcase, then check out the bigger options. I would recommend you  check out the sets – they are usually great value for money. Oftentimes you can get a set of three suitcases for the price of an average Samsonite, which is great!

What Features Are A Must For You?

Think about the features that you really want on your suitcase, and that you aren’t willing to compromise on. Is it expandable capacity? Spinner wheels? A TSA lock?

Whatever they are, you will usually find out if the luggage you like has them in the pros/cons section . If a suitcase is lacking something, I will definitely list it in the pros section. And if you can’t see the feature you’re looking for, check out the mini-reviews – they’ll tell you about all the important features.

Keep in mind that all the hardside suitcases in this review have spinner wheels, so that’s something you can immediately check off your list.

Delsey Paris Luggage Review: Which Ones Should You Buy?

Now, all of these Delsey suitcases are extremely popular and have thousands of positive reviews combined. That says a lot about their quality and overall value for money. I’ll tell you about the four suitcases that I think really stood out – but by no means that does that mean that the rest of them are any less good.

My favorite hardshell was the Delsey Helium Aero 19”. I think it is the perfect little carry-on since its dimensions are internationally accepted inside the cabin. Also, it is made from Polycarbonate, so it is really durable and sturdy. It even features an external compartment for electronics, which is honestly my favorite feature. And of course, there is a TSA combination lock that will protect all of your valuables when you’re not paying attention to your luggage.

  • Large easy access front compartment with an integrated padded sleeve for up to a 15.6 inch laptop and 2 zippered mesh pockets for computer accessories, toiletries, or any last minute items such as tickets, passport or books
  • Superior Maneuverability: The double spinner wheels assure exceptional maneuverability and keep ZERO weight on your arm.

The other hardside suitcase I would recommend is the Chatelet Hard +.  I think it’s one of the most elegant suitcases Delsey has ever made, and I particularly appreciate the leather details. It looks really good, and I love the red lining inside – a pop of color is always nice. Especially when you get it in the form of two full panel dividers that make your suitcase look extra neat. Additionally, I really like that the front wheels can be locked, so that your luggage can’t just roll away from you when you’re standing on the curb.

DELSEY Paris Chatelet Hard+ Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Champagne White, Checked-Large 28 Inch

  • Lightweight and durable 100% polycarbonate shell that is extremely resilient to cracking or breaking; designed with stylish faux leather accents
  • Four spinner wheels assuring a stable base with multi-directional rolling with zero weight on your hand for easy travel

My absolute favorite softshell was the Delsey Cruise Lite 21”. It just has so many convenient features for a carry-on – the padded laptop and tablet sleeves were definitely my favorite. I also loved the TSA toiletry bag, as well as the dedicated power bank pocket. Plus, it’s made from durable materials, and it has double spinner wheels and a comfortable wheel handle – what more could you want?

DELSEY Paris Cruise Lite Softside Carry-On Exp. Spinner Suiter Trolley, Black, One Size

  • Designed to fit in the overhead of most domestic airlines
  • Features a double padded neoprene sleeve that fits a tablet and up to a 15.6" laptop, as well as a dedicated neoprene power bank pocket and cable port to charge electronics on the go

And the other softside suitcase I think you’ll love is the Delsey Sky Max. I love that it is so lightweight, especially because it’s such a large suitcase. It has spinner wheels, neoprene padded carry handles, and even corner protectors that improve the overall durability of the luggage. But what won me over with these suitcases were all the pockets and compartments – perfect for anyone who likes to organize their clothes.

Key Takeaways

  • Popular checked luggage options include the Samsonite Omni and Travelpro Maxlite 5, known for their durability, lightweight construction, and spacious interiors.
  • Hard-sided suitcases like the Delsey Helium Aero offer built-in TSA locks and a polycarbonate shell, providing excellent protection for checked items.
  • For frequent travelers, the Briggs & Riley Baseline offers expandable compartments and a lifetime free repair service, making it a top choice for those seeking long-term reliability and extra space.

Carry-on luggage is all well and good if you’re only going on a short trip, but if you are planning on staying away longer, you’ll need a substantial suitcase that can be checked into the cargo hold.

Whether you choose to check an über-modern hard-shell spinner case , a traditional fabric case, or a big ol’ backpack , you should do your research to find the size, shape, and style of luggage that works best for your next adventure.

Checked luggage is bigger, bulkier, and usually more cumbersome than cabin cases. How you transport it to and from the airport, as well as the physical weight and size restrictions on the aircraft itself will affect the type of checked luggage you can use on an aircraft.

Checked luggage size

Carry-on luggage is easy to handle, but it can lack the space your need for bigger adventures. If you’re planning to check your luggage this time, treat yourself to one of those bigger suitcases you’ve had your eyes on.

Most manufacturers make cases, backpacks, and even bags in a variety of sizes, so you could even drop a few dollars on a matching set . Remember that medium cases are easier to transport than super-sized ones (and lighter, too).

Great big cases are hard work to roll around the airport, and every carrier has restrictions on the size and weight they’ll accept — so check with the airline before you fly .

Hot Tip: As a general rule, 62 linear inches is usually the maximum allowed bag size for most domestic and international carriers.

Checked luggage weight

Don’t be that person at check-in unpacking their overstuffed suitcase to make it weigh less. Check with your airline before you fly to find out their weight limit guidelines for checked luggage. Most airlines will charge extra for bags that weigh over 50 pounds (or may even refuse them at check-in).

You may be able to escape the weight restrictions by checking more than 1 suitcase at a time, but you will usually be charged extra for this privilege (and not every airline on every route will offer this service).

Backpack vs. Suitcase

Backpack or suitcase

When it comes to checked luggage, this is really down to what suits you best and how you intend to carry your belongings when you reach your destination.

If you are backpacking around the globe, you should probably invest in a pack of some kind with lots of bells and whistles. But if you’re planning a vacation in a fancy resort, a suitcase will be just fine.

Bottom Line: The best type of luggage is the one that matches your needs both when you fly and when you to your destination, so don’t lust over something unsuitable — buy to suit your needs instead.

Delsey wheels

Suitcases with 2 wheels are easy to pull behind you and will be better equipped to move over rougher terrain, while the 4-wheeled versions can glide along next to you and are much easier to manage in tight spaces such as airplane aisles.

Cost, practicality, and personal preference are all major factors in choosing a 2- or 4-wheeled option. You can glide a 4-wheel spinner case with ease in the airport, but it could easily get stuck on bumpy sidewalks or uneven pathways.

A 2-wheeled version can be hauled over anything, but it can also be unsteady and cumbersome. Test “drive” a few suitcases before you buy!

Checked luggage handle

A sturdy handle is an absolute must on a medium or larger suitcase. No one wants to end up having to carry their case around the airport — those wheels are there to be used!

Telescopic handles that fit neatly inside the frame of the case when not in use are a common feature of full-size suitcases. If you are buying a premium brand, they should also come with ergonomic handles to prevent your hands from becoming raw when pulling that case from one country to another.

Hot Tip: Look for a suitcase handle that has a selection of stop heights. That way, even the tallest and smallest members of your family can pull it with ease.

Zips and Locks (TSA)

TSA locks

The TSA requires that every passenger traveling to or from the U.S. that uses a lock to secure their luggage must use a TSA-approved lock .

Every passenger’s bag is screened before it’s placed on the plane, and the TSA can choose to open a passenger’s luggage for closer inspection at its discretion.

When this occurs, if the luggage has any lock other than those approved by the TSA, they will destroy it to gain access . So invest in a TSA-approved lock or bag with a zipper to ensure your bag doesn’t arrive half open and wrapped in notorious TSA tape.

Hard or Soft Luggage

Soft or hardside luggage

Choosing whether to get a shiny new hard-shell case or a sporty-looking soft-shell is another tough call you’ll have to make.

Hard cases can be incredibly durable with sleek curves and colorful exteriors, but they offer less flexibility in terms of interior space (and are more prone to wonky wheels and failing handles).

Soft cases are sometimes less to look at, and they don’t offer quite the same level of reinforced protection. However, they often have more usable internal space, useful external pockets, and are far lighter to carry and easier to maneuver.

Quality and the durability of any case will depend on the make and model, so remember the old adage “buy cheap, buy twice” before you commit.

Material and Durability

Checked luggage materials

Hard-shell suitcases are made from durable materials that will take the common knocks and bangs associated with air travel in stride. The most popular hard materials are polycarbonate, aluminum, ABS, and polypropylene.

When it comes to soft-shell cases, don’t let the fabric put you off. They’re not made from fine silk and won’t fall to pieces at the first touch! Usually, these are manufactured using super-strong synthetic materials such as ballistic and Cordura nylon, or polyester if you opt for a lower-cost option.

1. For Those Who Demand Performance and Good Looks

Samsonite omni pc hardside spinner 28.

The Samsonite brand is synonymous with great-looking suitcases that are tough as nails. Their Omni is no exception; its injection-molded polycarbonate shell looks super cool and is designed to withstand even the toughest of aircraft journeys .

Sleek and shiny on the outside, the micro-diamond texture is extremely scratch-resistant, meaning your case will look great no matter how many times you use it. It should also remain super easy to maneuver, as the 4 spinner wheels require pretty much zero effort to move around — you can practice 360-degree upright turns in any direction with just a light touch of your finger.

TSA locks come standard across the range, which means agents can access your bags when they need to, and your belongings will remain safe from malicious intrusions.

Weighing in at 10.5 pounds, this case will eat into your weight allowance without even a pair of socks packed inside — but it is also one of the most practical and durable cases out there.

Available in 20-, 24-, and 28-inch sizes, and a nice range of sophisticated colors, these Samsonite cases should be a feature on anybody’s list of best luggage options.

What We Like

  • Integrated TSA lock for security

What We Don’t Like

  • No bottom handle for lifting

Read our Samsonite Omni review for more information.

2. The Premium Checked Luggage

UPGRADE PICK: Briggs & Riley Baseline-Softside CX Expandable Luggage

Briggs & Riley Baseline Expandable Upright

As one of the most popular manufacturers of cases in the U.S., it should be no surprise that Briggs & Riley have come up with yet another practical and supercool suitcase with its Baseline range. It does, however, come at a premium price.

Available in a choice of 19-, 21-, 22-, 25-, and 28-inch versions, you should easily be able to find the right fit for you. Or buy 2: a matched set to check and carry-on!

Made from 1680D ballistic nylon outer fabric, this case promises to resist moisture and dirt as well as the wear and tear of everyday air travel. The hybrid fiberglass frame is lightweight and provides flexibility, durability, and the ability to cleverly retain its shape.

Perhaps most impressive is the patented CX expansion-compression system that comes as standard across the range, allowing you to increase your packing capacity by a whopping 26%  while compressing back to the original size to keep the contents secure.

It also has an “aircraft-grade” aluminum handle system with 4 stop heights to suit the size of every traveler. Holding between 72.5 and 90.2 liters of personal belongings, this suitcase is a great option for anyone looking to check their luggage.

  • Handy mesh pockets that minimize your clothes getting wrinkled
  • Might be a bit out of budget for many travelers

3. For the Fashion Conscious Traveler

Delsey luggage helium aero 25 inch expandable spinner (we travel with this one).

This suitcase looks really nice! It also wheels well and has plenty of space for lots of belongings. Unlike some of the other hard-shell cases on the market, the Aero from Delsey also has the capacity to expand a little bit, so you can drop in some souvenirs during your return journey.

Made from 100% polycarbonate, the case itself should remain durable throughout its lifetime. Available in a selection of colors, the shiny, molded case is an absolute stunner .

Internally, it is also impressive, with 2 full packing compartments, a separate lined divider, tie-down straps, and a zippered pocket for small accessories. These are allegedly there to minimize the shifting of contents during transit, though for most of us they just secure the extra items we throw in at the last minute.

The double spinner wheels are small, yet somehow really smooth and effective, while the handle feels sturdy enough to take the weight of your case (even when really full). No tipping here — the double-wheel setup will prevent the embarrassment of a falling suitcase as you wait in line to check in.

Finally, the designers at Delsey have been thoughtful enough to include a TSA-acceptable lock in the design, meaning TSA agents can easily open and inspect your bag should they need to.

Available in 21-, 25-, and 29-inch versions, these are good solid cases with a fashionable edge.

  • Handy mesh pockets that minimize clothes wrinkling
  • Might be out of budget for many travelers

4. Beautiful and Functional Hard-Shell Case

Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside Luggage

Samsonite Winfield Hardside Spinner Suitcase

Of all the Samsonite luggage pieces, this is by far the best-looking. This beauty has a full-capacity design that offers tons of space for your belongings. Made from 100% polycarbonate, this case is made to absorb impact by flexing under stress and magically popping back into its original shape .

The lightweight locking telescopic handle has plenty of different height settings and is almost as strong as the case itself — perfect if you need something to lean on while you wait in line. The clever unified brushed pattern helps hide any unsightly dents or dings, though this case should be strong enough to handle anything that’s thrown at it.

And it’s not just the exterior that’s impressive either. Inside the case, you can use every inch of space to pack your belongings. There is also a fully-zipped interior divider and cross straps to keep your clothing in place during transit.

Need more space? No problem! The Winfield can expand up to 1.5 inches for all those extra souvenirs you need to bring home. And no more lugging a heavy case through the airport either — it moves effortlessly on 4 multi-directional spinner wheels.

For additional security, the case comes with side-mounted TSA locks that will deter thieves but make it easy for TSA agents who need to search your luggage. Chose from a variety of colors and sizes that range from 19 to 28 inches to suit your travel needs.

A great-looking case that’s built to last, this is the crème de la crème of Samsonite luggage.

  • Brushed pattern to hide scratches
  • Buyer pays shipping costs for warranty claims

5. A Rugged, Smart, and Spacious Aluminum Suitcase

Trek Aluminum Black

Trek Aluminum Suitcase (from MVST)

Hot Tip: Use special promo code UP10 for 10% off!

Checked luggage needs to be able to withstand the rough and tumble of international air travel, and only the most robust of cases are truly equipped to do the job without damage. The Trek Aluminum Suitcase is a hardy case that has been built with your next adventure in mind.

Made from a super-resilient aluminum-magnesium alloy shell that will withstand bumps and bruises, and reinforced corners that are designed not to crack or split, this is a serious contender for travelers looking for a suitcase that will last for many years to come.

With rugged good looks on the outside and smart design features like a zipper-less closure system and dual TSA-approved combination locks for ease of access when passing through security, this suitcase is much more than just a fashionable flight case.

The smooth-lined interior offers pocketed panels to keep your items separate when necessary. This case has 104.6 liters of interior packing space spread across both sides of the shell.

The respectful weight of just 14 pounds means the case is light and easy to maneuver even when full, and the sizable dimensions of 29.5 x 20.9 x 11.4 inches are handled effortlessly by the ultra-smooth 360-degree spinner wheels and aluminum telescoping handle.

Rugged good looks, impressive internal capacity, and a design that will withstand even the roughest of baggage handlers make this a great suitcase for long-distance adventures.

  • Rubber seals and zipperless closure for security
  • A little on the heavy side

6. An Affordable Hardside Spinner

Amazonbasics hardside spinner suitcase.

Keep your cash free for spending when you arrive at your destination with this basic but brilliant budget hardside suitcase from AmazonBasics .

Along with an attractive price tag, this suitcase also offers plenty of similar features to those you’ll find on suitcases twice the price (or more). You can easily create more space for your belongings — an expandable design provides an impressive extra 15% more packing space , perfect for longer trips or extra sweaters.

The interior is fully lined, and the handy divider will keep everything neat and tidy while you travel. Much like some of its more expensive counterparts, the AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner also offers extra zippered pockets you can use to keep smaller items or travel documents safe while on the move.

On the outside, it also looks every bit as good as any of the bigger brand alternatives, with its durable, scratch-resistant finish that will protect it against common damage from being knocked around on its travels.

  • Expandable for up to 15% extra packing space
  • The telescopic handle can get stuck

Hot Tip:  Looking for more options? Check out our separate review dedicated to the best hardside/hard-shell luggage .

1. A Light Yet Travel-proof Suitcase

Travelpro maxlite 5 softside expandable checked luggage.

Made from polyester fabric with a stain-resistant coating, this lightweight suitcase is perfect for anyone seeking a soft case that doesn’t cost a fortune. This case looks just as good as many of its more expensive counterparts and is available in a variety of sizes.

Weighing a super light 8.5 pounds, you will have plenty of room within the weight limit to load up your belongings, and the top opening front makes it accessible to pack.

Expandable cases offer fabulous amounts of flexibility and can dramatically increase the interior space you have to play with. Taking the family away for a while? Unzip the concealed section on the front to fit in the extra gear you need.

Spinner wheels allow for easy maneuverability, while the handle is made from stronger stuff that slips away into the honeycomb frame with ease.

While this may not be the most exciting suitcase on the market, it is one of the best. According to TravelPro’s website, this is the preferred case of cabin crew and frequent travelers , which would suggest it’s worth exploring if you want to travel light, but travel right!

  • Expandable for up to 2 extra inches of packing space
  • Can tip forward unless properly weighted

2. The Best Design for Frequent Flyers

Travelpro platinum magna expandable spinner suitcase.

TravelPro strikes again — but this time we’ve scaled up the additional features and headed toward the top of its range.

Roll with ease on the self-aligning, magnetic dual spinner wheels that will you have maneuvering this case on a dime. Or simply pull it along using the patented PowerScope aluminum extension handle that minimizes the dreaded wobble and has 3 different height stops for additional comfort.

Made from high-density ballistic nylon with a Duraguard coating, this case should be well-protected against both damage and dirt — and it looks like a really premium product that you would be proud to roll along with you. Top and side leather carrying handles, as well as a bottom cup handle, are there for you to comfortably lift your case off the carousel.

Need more room? You got it! This case is expandable up to 2 inches, which should be plenty of space to throw in an extra sweater or 2 without making it bulky or misshapen.

This lid-opening suitcase comes with lots of useful accessory pockets internally and a built-in suiter, and the wet pockets allow you to keep your toiletries or dirty clothes separate. Designed by a former airline pilot, these cases are lightweight, practical,  and are made to withstand many, many miles of overseas adventures.

If it is good enough for an airline pilot who really has traveled the world, chances are this one is good enough for you too!

  • Top, side, and bottom handles for easy lifting
  • Zipper pulls can sometimes break with regular use

3. The Best for Budget-conscious Travelers

Amazon Basics Softside Spinner Luggage Suitcase

AmazonBasics Softside Spinner Suitcase

Not everyone wants to compete in the big-brand luggage stakes, and this suitcase is a good AmazonBasics alternative to some of the better-known brand names.

The low price tag means this suitcase is easily within range for most travelers. And while it may not last you a lifetime, it is a pretty good solution for those looking to travel occasionally, or on domestic flights.

This 25-inch softside spinner complies with check-in size restrictions and is lightweight enough to allow you to fill it with ease. Intriguingly, this case can shrink a little to fit into tight spaces  or grow a little bit to allow you an extra 25% packaging capacity with its expandable top section.

You’ll get smooth-rolling mobility in any direction with the 360-degree spinner wheels, and the telescopic handle can quickly be pulled out when you are on the move. Inside the suitcase is an effective organizer to keep your clothes safely stowed during transit and 3 zippered pockets for conveniently storing smaller items.

Low on price but not on quality, this basic case is a good option for those who want to spend more cash on vacation than they do on their luggage.

  • Outer pocket for quick access to items
  • Zippers can break easily

4. Soft-shell Luggage for Premium Travelers

Samsonite aspire xlite 25-inch spinner.

This time Samsonite brings you the Aspire Xlite, a cleverly designed soft-shell case that has some intriguing features. The case is made from 1680D polyester, a man-made fiber produced by the polymerization of the product formed when an alcohol and organic acid react… now there’s something you probably never knew before!

The case has the trademark Samsonite spinner wheels, allowing for zero-effort maneuverability on airport walkways and busy sidewalks alike. The retractable handle is a dream to use, as it glides seamlessly out from the case when you need to be mobile and then slips back into the frame when not in use.

Inside there is also plenty to write home about. Cross straps encourage your luggage to not move around in transit, and there are some cool extra features: a Wetpak bag that keeps damp items away from clean and dry ones, and mesh pockets for extra organization.

If you have utilized all of the pockets and space, you can add a little more by taking advantage of the expanding capability that adds extra capacity for more sweaters, shoes, or souvenirs.

At 9.5 pounds, this is surprisingly weighty for a soft-shell case, but it’s also a premium brand that is made to last with lots of great quality features .

  • Integrated wet pocket to keep other items dry
  • A little heavy for a softside bag

5. The Case for Families and Extended Stays

Briggs & riley zdx expandable, hunter, 29-inch.

With sleek curves and a sizable capacity for extra items, the ZDX suitcase from Briggs & Riley is another great case for checking when you travel. Being the largest in the range, this is the perfect case for anyone jetting off for an extended stay, or a family who has plenty of gear they need to take along.

This suitcase is made from lightweight, durable 800D ballistic nylon, and has reinforced corner guards for extra protection. The dual wheel spinning system makes light work of airport terminal walkways, while the patented outside telescopic handle provides easy handling and prevents your clothes from getting wrinkled when stored.

Once again, the brains behind the Briggs & Riley brand have included their patented CX expansion compression system, which allows you to increase your packing capacity by an impressive 34% before compressing back to its original size.

The self-repairing, durable YKK zippers are also a unique and well-thought-out feature that can be used with a standalone TSA lock, and the Smartlink strap attaches to another suitcase or a backpack for easy transportation.

Inside, you’ll find a huge main compartment with tie-down straps and an additional 2 zippered compartments in the top for all those additional bits and pieces that need to come with you.

Big and beautiful, the ZDX suitcase really should be on your list if you do not intend to travel light.

  • Handy luggage strap to join multiple suitcases together
  • No integrated TSA lock

6. Suitcases for Travelers Who Appreciate Unique Design

Victorinox works traveler 6.0 softside spinner luggage, 24-inch.

Victorinox is famous for its Swiss army knives and state-of-the-art watches, but it’s also becoming increasingly well-known for its luggage. Statement style with tons of practicality combines to make the Werks Traveler a great option if you prefer a soft-shell suitcase.

Flexible and super accessible, the interior space makes it easy for you to compartmentalize your belongings. We think this design would really appeal to business travelers who need to arrive ready to go .

Made from extra-strong nylon, this is one of the only cases on the market that comes with a Swiss-engineered handle system that is as awesome as Victorinox’s knives and watches. It also takes inspiration from Japan with Hinomoto wheels that feature Lisof silent tires for quiet and quick maneuverability.

Inside the case, you can fit tons of stuff with the innovative Pack More System, complete with X-shaped compression straps, a removable trifold suiter, and 2 large mesh side pockets. Stash your laptop in the padded 15.4-inch laptop compartment, and you’ll be on your way!

  • Comes with a packing cube to keep clothing neat and tidy
  • Quite heavy for a medium-sized suitcase

1. Pack Everything Including the Kitchen Sink

Made from Bi-Tech fabrics, you can guarantee your belongings will be kept safe in transit, and the huge internal compartment provides plenty of room.

When not in use, keep your duffel bag inside the handy storage pouch, which also doubles up as a bag to keep your shoes or wet clothing separate. Large treaded wheels make light work on uneven surfaces, and the hefty wheel housing adds stability and makes this bag easy to maneuver.

For that tricky terrain when wheels just won’t do, you can carry your bag using the detachable shoulder strap or comfortable carry handles.

With a huge capacity to hold everything you need and more — and complete with a warranty that covers every eventuality — this is the perfect bag for the serious backpacker!

  • Can be wheeled like a suitcase or carried like a shoulder bag
  • No internal storage compartments to stay organized

2. For Travelers Looking for a Big Bag on Wheels

Eagle creek gear warrior duffel bag.

Warrior by name and by nature, this supersized wheeled duffel is built with super cool “exo-Skeleton” technology, making it a great choice for those who want a backpack that’s a little different.

Treaded wheels will make it easy for you to pull this beast through the busiest of airports, while the protective wheel housing and durable kick plate ensure maximum durability in a bag that can withstand almost anything .

With a huge 110 liter capacity, as well as the brand’s own unique Equipment Keeper that allows you to strap gear to the top of the bag , you can carry all of your clothing, your sleeping bag, and much much more with you wherever you go.

Despite its size, this suitcase/duffel bag hybrid has a lightweight anodized aluminum dual-tube handle that makes light work of lugging this behind you. The reinforced Hypalon material also helps keep abrasions at bay so your bag will look fresh no matter what your adventures throw at it.

On the inside are a variety of compartments to keep your stuff stowed securely, as well as compression straps to help it keep its shape. Practical, lightweight, and impressively sizable, this is yet another great travel option from the wizards over at Eagle Creek.

  • Made from 100% recycled PET ripstop and a recycled coating
  • Zippers can sometimes break

3. One of the Most Popular Backpacks on the Market

Osprey Farpoint 55 Backpack

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack

Osprey is well-known for its high-quality, super roomy backpacks . The Farpoint is no exception, and this particular model is big enough to take you anywhere in the world while still being light enough to be carried easily.

Don’t want to carry a huge rucksack around when you reach your destination? No problem! Osprey’s famous 2-in-1 backpack solution includes a detachable daypack that can be used for excursions and exploration when you reach your destination.

The Farpoint is made from durable ripstop nylon, and the backpack will remain comfortable to carry thanks to the stowaway back panel, harness, and hip belt that can easily be adjusted to fit your size.

There is a large zip panel to the main compartment that makes it a cinch to pack and unpack, and the numerous zippered compartments are perfect for hiding valuables or items you need easy access to.

  • Includes a detachable daypack
  • No wheels to use as an alternative method of transportation

Hot Tip: The Fairview is similar in design but has been designed with women in mind, offering slightly varied dimensions to suit the female frame. If you don’t feel the need for the detachable backpack, both versions are also available in the carry-on-sized 40-liter model, as well as 55- and 70-liter versions.

4. For Those Who Want an Osprey Pack on Wheels

Osprey sojourn wheeled luggage, 28-inch/80-liter.

This super-sized 80-liter backpack offers you 2 choices: roll it or wear it. Either offer an effective way to transport your belongings while enjoying your trip.

Featuring Osprey’s very own AG AntiGravity mesh back system, this backpack is incredibly comfortable to carry, and the torso-adjustable harness and hip belt mean you can customize the fit to your frame.

Almost as advanced as a 4-wheel drive, the injection-molded HighRoad chassis is made from an ABS polymer plastic that makes it super hard-wearing and durable, while the polyurethane wheels are good to go over most types of terrain.

Internally, there are acres of space to stow your stuff. You’ll find plenty of pockets as well as the patented Osprey Wash Bag Cassette that helps keep clean and dirty clothes separate — and a wipe-clean liquid/accessories pocket makes light work of cleaning up spills.

The internal compression straps allow you to fully maximize the capacity of this bag and are also really useful for securing your clothes during transit to limit creases and let you squeeze those last-minute extra items in.

If you want to go all out, the Sojourn is also compatible with Osprey’s smaller day backpacks. The Daylight and Daylight Plus can be attached to the front, meaning you have a smaller, lighter option for daily use when you get there.

  • Can be wheeled like a suitcase or carried as a backpack
  • The telescopic handle could extend longer

Checked luggage is nothing new, and travelers have been lugging huge suitcases around since commercial air travel was invented. What is new, though, is the huge variety of suitcases, bags, and backpacks that modern-day travelers can choose from.

Whatever your preference, go for quality, and be sure to check with your airline carrier about their checked luggage restrictions before you fly.

week cruise and never felt that our old travel agent appreciated our business as she seemed to spend most of her time leading boondoggle international trips and left her business to others who could seldom answer our questions. Jennifer has clearly earned our business.

reservations in April because Princess said our trip was not paid for in full even though we had given our final payment to Karen in January. After that we never heard anything from her and ended up resolving another problem that arose on our own. We were never informed of all the perks that came with the suite level booking. It was a pleasant surprise when we boarded the cruise but we would not have spent time booking some things if we had been informed of these perks prior to the cruise. Our feeling is that is what you use a travel agent for, to be informed about what is offered by the company you are booking for travel. Other agents we have used contacted us prior to our trips to at least say have a good trip and see if we needed anything and then after the trip to see how it went. We feel that there was no added value to using this travel agency.

their travel agent, Donna Nelson, who had just booked their trip for them. Although we live in different states, we contacted Donna. Donna spoke with us on the phone about our preferences. We found her to be 100% efficient and personable as she effectively communicated with us and arranged our booking on the cruise, including our cabin, and also our flights and seats, also our hotel accommodation for the night before sailing. We were impressed with her competence, the ease in booking, and the reasonable prices she found for us. Subsequent emailings of documents for our upcoming trip have been clear and thorough. We wholeheartedly recommend Donna Nelson to work with you in booking your next trip!

totally surprised by the prompt replies we received to all our questions (our previous experiences with cruise line employees had often been several days for responses). So far we have booked a cruise and a land tour with her and are very happy. We'll never go back to doing it all on our own!

efficient. All that had changed since we cancelled the second half of the cruise next year and cancelled and rebooked a different cruise in 2025. We felt like we were chastised for doing what we did. When I asked why we didn't the gratuities paid for on the 2025 cruise I was told it wasn't guaranteed and that Bonvoyage didn't have any perks. That not what the web site says. Then I asked about arranging the air I got push back again saying she was busy with other guests. When I pushed she arranged the air and then didn't listen to what we wanted and thankfully I found it before we paid. I did ask to switch to another agent and I was told I couldn't! Today I asked about a hotel we wanted to stay in and was told that hotel wasn't on their list. So so I asked for a list and again I was told she was busy with Other customers and when she had time she would investigate and send me a list. This is the first time we've worked with a TA and we are highly disappointed in the lack of customer service. Is this the norm? I have no idea. I am a planner and like to have everything arranged ahead of time so I don't have to worry. I guess that's not the Bonvoyage way?
