The Lake Morton Neighborhood Association is hosting the 2023 19th Annual Historic Home & Garden Tour on Saturday, April 1, 2023 from 11am-4pm.

Tour 8 homes/gardens and one iconic public building on this self guided walking tour. Homes are revealed on the day of the tour. The tour time frame is 11am to 4pm. The tour itself will take no more that 2 hours. It is self guided, so you can take breaks as needed between 11am and 4pm.

Tour start location is 750 Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Lakeland FL 33801 At Florida Southern College’s Frank Lloyd Wright Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center

TICKETS ARE $17 per person of all ages, each participant is required to have a ticket. Visit the website for FAQs about the tour. The tour is limited to 500 guests, so get your tickets early.

Lakeland's historic Lake Morton houses to open their doors

LAKELAND — Residents who have wondered what the inside of Lake Morton's century-old homes look like are about to get a glimpse.

The 17th annual Historic Lake Morton Home & Garden Tour will be held Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature nine homes, some whose history can be traced back to prominent Lakeland families.

“It offers a glimpse into the past of the people who lived here; some of the names you will recognize as part of Lakeland's past,” Julie Townsend said. “These are people who contributed to what Lakeland is today, even if in some small way.”

Townsend, former president-turned-spokeswoman for the Lake Morton Neighborhood Association , said homeowners and docents will be available at each stop to provide additional background on the houses, including when they were built or who previously owned them, and answer questions.

“Our biggest goal is to educate and to share,” she said. “We hope people are as passionate at preserving Lakeland's first neighborhood as we are.”

The nine homes featured were built between 1912 and 1947, with roughly half being marked as a Lake Morton Century Home — more than 100 years old. Featured architecture will include craftsman bungalows, Craft Tudor, Federal Colonial Revival and frame vernacular styles.

There have been more than 150 historic homes displayed since the tour's beginning. The full list of homes and addresses featured will not be revealed until the day of the event. Townsend said the houses usually are not repeated within five years.

More than half the 500 available tickets have been sold as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Townsend. Tickets cost $17 per person.

“This is the most we've ever sold in advance,” she said.

Townsend credited the advance sales to an increase in online ticket purchases. Those interested can purchase paper ahead of time at Home Essentials, Traditions Unlimited and Bungalow Boutique.

The tour starts at Florida Southern College's Sharp Tourism and Education Center, located at 750 Frank Lloyd Wright Way in Lakeland. Participants can take a self-guided walking tour or hop aboard a courtesy shuttle bus provided by Florida Southern that will make seven stops near the featured homes. Significant walking will be required and not all homes are handicap-accessible.

The funds raised from the tour are used on community projects aimed at benefiting its residents and visitors. This has included the light-up swans displayed by Lake Morton each holiday season and upkeep of the area's bronze neighborhood signs.

• Advocate beautification, pride and conservancy of Lake Morton amenities and common spaces to contest neighborhood and community deterioration including juvenile crimes
• Promote communication and partnership between Lake Morton residents and between the neighborhoods and organizations within – and including – the City of Lakeland

One way they do this – and something that may interest you if you think you would enjoy living in a Lakeland historic district – is with their Annual Historic Home and Garden Tour. This is a self-guided walking or shuttle bus tour open to the public that features 8-10 homes and gardens in the south and east Lake Morton historic district.

3.  It’s home to several wonderful restaurants.

The Red Door Wine Market, Mister Fish and Patio 850 are all located in the Lake Morton District, and are favorites among Lakelanders far and wide.

8. Florida Southern College’s Frank Lloyd Wright architecture collection.

Lake Morton belongs to its wildlife. It is a hotspot for birdwatchers, artists and photographers wanting to catch a glimpse of white and black swans, pelicans, ducks, geese, eagles and more.

Historic Walking Tour

January 27 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am.

Historic Lakeland and the LDDA team up to host a walking tour of the Munn Park Historic District.  Local historians lead a group of 25 inside and out of various buildings in the Historic District providing narration along the way.  Building choices change with each tour and will be announce the day of the tour. The tour begins at 9am and lasts until about 11:30am.

The tour is limited to 25 people and requires walking and standing for up to 2 hours. The tour is essentially FREE, however you are required to buy $10 worth of Farmers Market Bucks which we will deliver to you on the day of the tour. You can immediately spend them at the Farmers Curb Market along Kentucky Ave until 2pm or save them for another day. Market Bucks spend like cash at the Farmers Curb Market.

The City of Lakeland’s biennial Historic Home Workshop will soon return for the first time since 2019. Those who own historic homes or are interested in preservation are invited to this free event on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Florida Southern College.

Familiar names on the speaker list include LuAnn Mims of the Lakeland Public Library and Emily Foster from the city’s Historic Preservation office. Experts will give hour-long talks on topics like:

• Discover Your Home’s Past
• The Basics of Building Permitting and Code Enforcement
• Follies and Fables of Historic Home Renovations
• The Quest for the Perfect Wood Window

The Ordway Building is a short distance from the South Lake Morton and Biltmore-Cumberland districts.

The workshop itself will even take place in a historic structure: The Lucius Pond Ordway Building (1049 Frank Lloyd Wright Way). This building was designed by — you guessed it — Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1952. Pro tip: Join a free tour of Florida Southern’s architecture, limited to 25 participants, at the end of the workshop.

Lakeland is home to 1,600+ historic buildings and landmarks in seven historic districts . Thanks to a recent resurvey of the East and South Lake Morton districts, more houses have been recommended as contributing structures.

Resurveys are planned for the Dixieland and Downtown/Munn Park districts in the 2024 fiscal year, followed by the Beacon Hill, Biltmore-Cumberland, and Lake Hunter Terrace districts in the 2026 fiscal year. If you live in these areas, it’s a great time to attend the workshop to prepare for your historic home’s future.

Human remains found at historic mansion in Limerick Township, Pa.

LIMERICK TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Archeologists and historians have uncovered human remains on the historic Hood family estate in Limerick Township, Pennsylvania.

According to the Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society , the remains belong to the Hoods.

It is believed that the historic mansion was part of the Underground Railroad.

Built in 1834, the mansion served as the family's summer home until 2017. John McClellan Hood built the mansion for his wife and 13 children.

By the early 1900s, 15 family members were interred on the estate's grounds. But due to vandalism and grave robbing, the Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society says most of the remains were relocated to Philadelphia's Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Only the remains of John, his wife Elizabeth, his son, Washington, and John's brother Montgomery Hood remained interred at the estate.

The remains found recently have not been identified.

The property is owned by a Brooklyn, New York, developer who has proposed a plan to demolish the home and build warehouses on the property.

"That plan would destroy the mansion, leave the mausoleum exposed and vulnerable, and erase the Hood family history," the Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society says.

The mansion went viral after the society offered it for free to anyone who could move it to a different location.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society still hopes to save the historic land.

"Our goal is to keep the lines of communication open with the developer for the eventual subdivision of six acres of land that will allow the preservation of the Hood mansion, its history, and the historic ancestral burial ground of the Hoods," the society says.

Hsmc to sponsor tours of historic homes on oct. 6.

The Historical Society of Marshall County (HSMC) wants citizens to come home.

That is, the 116-year-old organization — charged with preserving the county’s past – is urging residents to visit six historic and distinctive homes Oct. 6, from noon to 5 p.m. as part of a HSMC fund-raising effort.

Marshalltown is home to four unique properties, while the other two are in State Center.

The homes were built from 1880 to the early 1900s, said Julie Lang of Marshalltown, who is coordinating the event. She is a longtime HSMC board member and enthusiastic about county history.

In Marshalltown, the homes on the tour are owned by Cheri and Gerry Coleman at 301 S. 9th St., Julie and Kevin Hitchins at 308 N. 4th St., Kristyn and Barry Kell at 404 N. 5th St. and Jennifer and Jason Matteson at 608 W. Main St.

In State Center, they are owned by Jenny and Beau Hanson at 202 3rd Ave. NW, and Mary and Craig Pfantz at 201 4th Ave. NE.

The Pfantz home is a Queen Anne Victorian house built in 1904 by August and Josephine Riemenschneider. The house is historically significant to the Pfantz family because the Riemenschneider’s were Craig’s great-grandparents.

“Over a period of years, the house was owned by five different families before being purchased by us in 1994 for our family,” said Mary Pfantz, who also is an HSMC board member.

The Pfantzs completed an extensive restoration of the house including recreating the two-story wrap around porch, doing period appropriate painting, replacing the decorative shingles on the tower and re-shingling with new cedar shingles.

The interior is generously decorated with Victorian-era millwork. The home features parquet flooring resembling a Greek key pattern. Most of the light fixtures in the home are original. Other than cosmetics updates and updating the kitchen and bathrooms, most of the interior is also original.

Through the years, the property has received much notoriety, said Pfantz. In 1992, the Victorian horse barn was selected by the Des Moines Register as the “Most Beautiful Barn in Iowa.” In 1995, the barn and house were the subject of a P. Buckley Moss print entitled “Our Family Heritage.”

In 1999, the house was selected as the main site for the shooting of a PBS Masterpiece film “Cora Unashamed.” In 2022, the property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This included the house, the Victorian -style horse barn, and a small domestic out-building, built in the Victorian-style to complement the house.

An HSMC board member or volunteer will be present at each home to conduct tours.

Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at HSMCs Mowry-Irvine Mansion, 503 W. Main St., Hellberg Jewelers and Lillie Mae’s Chocolates. In State Center, tickets may be purchased at Central State Bank.

Tickets purchased at the door of one of the six homes are $20. Children under 10 are free. One admission is good for all six homes.

Event sponsors are Home Federal Savings Bank of Marshalltown and ProFinish Iowa of Grinnell.

McFarland Clinic of Marshalltown and UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown donated supplies to make the tour possible.
