The Seabourn Venture: An Antarctica Expedition

' src=

The snow covered white continent left me speechless and in awe; each day was better than the previous. A trip with Seabourn expeditions is among the best ways to cruise to Antarctica. A trip to the polar regions on the Seabourn Venture is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I highly recommend.

For those looking to book a Antarctica Expedition, please c ontact me at Scott & Thomas Travel or send me an email directly .

Seabourn Antarctica Review – Seabourn Venture

The Seabourn Venture, and sister ship Seabourn Pursuit , are PC6 polar class icebreakers. Both ultra luxurious expedition vessels are specifically designed for exploring remote regions like Antarctica. Both ships boast all-suite accommodations for just 264 passengers. Luxury Cruising and expeditions at its finest, Seabourn Antarctica cruise line did not overlook any details on this beautiful cruise ship.

After a 1 night stay in Buenos Aires you will transfer to Ushuaia to meet the ship. Charter flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia are included in your fare.

The Seabourn Venture Suites

The luxury expedition ships Seabourn Venture and Pursuit have spacious rooms that are beautifully appointed and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Every room includes a full veranda, walk-in closet, heated drying closet, and 5-piece bathroom with separate bathtub and walk-in shower. Most of my friends stayed in a standard beautiful veranda suite. These rooms are more than comfortable and offer more space than most ships.

Review: JAL Business Class Chicago to Tokyo on the 777-300ER

I upgraded my room to the larger Panorama Veranda Suite and the additional cost was 100% worth it. Larger windows and more space to relax, a larger bathroom with a jacuzzi tub equated to a blissful and more comfortable stay. Plus the room includes upgrades such as heated floors, more plush robes, and a nespresso machine.

Seabourn Dining Options

The ship features a variety of dining options. The Restaurant offers gourmet cuisine in a formal setting and is open for dinner, plus breakfast and lunch on select dates. White table clothes and 5 star service is the theme in the restaurant. Yet without a strict dress code. Thankfully, jeans are now allowed and there are no formal nights on these luxury expedition cruises.

cruise dining

The Colonnade serves up more casual fare and is open for Breakfast and Lunch. The colonnade is a buffet, but also has cooked to order options as well. At dinner time, the Colonnade transitions to the Earth and Ocean restaurant. This is a more casual dinner option with theme meals based on different regions of the world. Earth and ocean is a sit down dinning facility with table service.

cruise buffet

Nightly, from 6-9pm the Seabourn Club also turns into a sushi restaurant. Serving up surprisingly fresh and delicious sashimi, Nigiri, and rolls. We found this was a great place to grab a pre-dinner snack. Yet, it could easily be a full meal as well.

Seabourn Sushi

Other dining options aboard Seabourn include the light bites from Seabourn Square, the coffee shop. Or for those who want something else there is complimentary 24 hour room service available. The entire dinner menu from the main restaurant or earth and ocean is also available via room service.

Other Public Spaces

Seabourn has taken nearly every element of their larger cruise ships and brought them to the smaller expedition cruise ship plus more! The ship has a full size fitness center and a spa with two beautiful saunas. Both feature a panoramic window ensuring you miss nothing during your journey.

cruise sauna

There is a club for live music and dancing in the early morning hours. Often we closed it down at 2 am. Plus there is the constellation lounge at the front of the ship with live music. This space is utilized for afternoon high tea, afternoon and evening cocktails.

Cruise club

The bow lounge is a great place to meet the expedition team and see the ships navigation tools. T he Bow Lounge is one of my favorite places as it’s the closest access to water level and has direct access to the massive bow. It’s the perfect spot to watch for marine life. It also features touch screens showing the ship’s plotted location, as well as navigational charts and scientific information used to help guide the ship on its journey. There is also snacks in the bow lounge for those feeling peckish.

I found my self hanging out here albatross spotting on the Drake passage!

Finally, one of the most important areas of the ship is the beautiful Discovery Center. The discovery center is where the expedition staff provides daily recaps and plans for the following day. The discovery center is also utilized for nightly entertainment and live shows. On my expedition the cruise director performed both live opera and classical musicals. We also watched the super bowl, other movies, and watched our expedition video. The discovery center is also often used for educational talks throughout the expedition.

a room with green seats and a large window

Antarctica Expeditions are more than a standard cruise. If you are traveling to Antarctica, you also need to learn about Antarctica, South America, and the history of the area, including the Falkland Islands and south Georgia. The Discovery center is utilized for Seabourn conversations, or educational “ted talks.”

There are other public spaces on the ship, such as the expedition lounge. The expedition lounge is the meeting point for kayak and submarine excursions. It also doubles as a bar for the discovery center. Outfitted with a fireplace, it’s a cozy place the relax throughout the journey. This place also doubles as a dance floor when cruise director DJ Lupe spun for us.

Other spaces include the mud room where you get ready for the polar plunge or daily landings and where you disembark to zodiac boats. There is also the Sky Bar off the club next to the two higher jacuzzi. Off the colonnade is the pool deck which features a bar and two Jacuzzis too!

Cruise pools

The only thing the Seabourn Venture is missing in the famous Thomas Keller Grill. Yet, honestly with all the food options, I didn’t miss it that much!

Expedition Activities

Seabourn Antarctica on the Seabourn Venture offers a wide range of activities that are designed to help you get the most out of your journey and off the ship. Although, I cannot stress enough, no matter who you go with, you will spend the majority of your time on the ship. Therefore being on a comfortable ship is extremely important. There really are few places to land in Antarctica. With so many penguin colonies and the largest glaciers on this earth, stable land is limited which results in more time on the ship than off of it.

a group of penguins on a rock

With Seabourn Expeditions you can take part in guided hikes, kayak through icy waters, and even take a polar plunge into the frigid Southern Ocean. All passengers are offered daily zodiac tour options along with wet landings. If the weather cooperates you can expect getting off the ship 2-3 times a day for 1-3 hours at a time. The fewer passengers also means the more time on land. IAATO regulations limit 100 tourists on land at a time and prohibits ships with greater than 500 passengers from landing in Antarctica.

a group of people in a kayak

All landings and Zodiac cruises are complementary and included in every Seabourn Expedition. Kayaking and submarines do cost more and should be signed up for before departure. The Seaborn Venture and Pursuit ships carry 2 submarines and 10 sea kayaks.

Antarctica submarine

The Seabourn Venture also features two custom-built submarines that can take you on an underwater exploration of this icy wonderland. Seabourn is one of the few operators on the Antarctic peninsula with submarines! Do note that many submarine excursions do get canceled. They have limited operational capacity and if it’s too windy or wavy they have to cancel excursions due to safety. I personally was offloaded from a submarine during a surprise storm and now understand why they do not operate them except in pristine conditions. Not only was getting back to the boat cold and wet, but it was very difficult to transfer from the submarine to the zodiac during the windstorm which created whitecaps.

a sea creature under water

In addition to Seaborn Antarctica off-ship activities, there are plenty of items to keep you busy. On every Seabourn Antarctic expedition, you can also attend daily lectures and presentations by expert naturalists and scientists. They will help you gain a deeper understanding of the wildlife, geology, and ecology of Antarctica.

Bottom Line

The highlight of the Seabourn Antarctica journey is, of course, the experience of exploring the continent itself. The Seabourn Venture took me and my friends to the most stunning locations on earth. I witnessed first-hand the beauty and majesty of this unique landscape, giant ice sheets, tons of wildlife, and even watched icebergs form during glacier caving. You will have the opportunity to see wildlife that is found nowhere else on earth, and to explore the vast, frozen landscapes that make up the continent. The experience of exploring Antarctica on the Seabourn Venture is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

There is so much more I will say about my adventure to Antarctica in another blog. Yet know, this really is an adventure of a lifetime and traveling with Seabourn was a true treat. When you’re ready to book your adventure to Antarctica, please contact me at Scott & Thomas travel .  Bookings are now open through Feb 2025. I work with all major operators beyond Seabourn. My other favorites include National Geographic, Ponant, and Aurora Expeditions. Let me help you find your way to Antarctica!

Seabourn Announces Additional 2026 Antarctica Sailing

  • August 8, 2024

Seabourn Venture

Seabourn is adding a new Antarctica expedition to its 2025-26 deployment, the company announced in a press release.

Scheduled for March 10, 2026, the 11-day cruise will sail onboard the Seabourn Venture and is already available for bookings.

According to Seabourn, the new expedition was added due to popular demand and offers guests a new opportunity to experience The White Continent.

“Exploring Antarctica in March offers a unique opportunity to witness the stunning landscapes as they transition into winter. This period is ideal for observing peak whale activity, with potential sightings of humpback whales and orcas, along with gentoo penguins and Antarctic fur seals,” said Robin West, Seabourn’s Vice President and General Manager of Expeditions.

“Our Antarctica expedition voyages are incredibly popular, and we encourage guests to seize this chance to experience this remarkable continent and learn about the historic voyages of renowned explorers James Weddell, Otto Nordenskjöld and Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.”

Between November 2025 and March 2026, the Seabourn Venture and the Seabourn Pursuit will offer a series of 11-, 13- and 21-day voyages to Antarctica.

All expeditions include a pre-cruise charter hotel stay in Buenos Aires, Seabourn said, as well as roundtrip charter flights to Ushuaia, from where the ships will depart.

According to the company, the cruises to Antarctica also feature Zodiac outings, in addition to optional kayaking and submarine excursions.

Planned itineraries include visits to Lemaire Channel, Deception Island and Neko Harbour, among other places in the region.

Passengers also receive a complimentary Helly Hansen PolarShield parka, featuring an outer shell and a removable insulator puff jacket, in addition to an WaterShield waterproof backpack.

Seabourn’s Antarctica expedition voyages will also offer the new ‘Image Masters’ program, which is described by the company as a hands-on masterclass designed to sharpen the camerawork of guests via an intimate photography workshop.

The program will provide in-the-field instruction on photo composition, camera technique, editing and retouching led by onboard nature photographers.

Strong Demand for Antarctica Cruises Prompts Seabourn to Add An Extra Departure in 2026

Seabourn’s Antarctica cruises have been so popular that the line is adding an additional departure in the spring of 2026.

Offered on the Seabourn Venture, the new addition is an 11-day cruise taking place March 10-21, 2026.

“Our Antarctica expedition voyages are incredibly popular, and we encourage guests to seize this chance to experience this remarkable continent and learn about the historic voyages of renowned explorers James Weddell, Otto Nordenskjöld and Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen,” says Robin West, vice president and general manager of expeditions for Seabourn .

The Antarctic cruise season typically runs from November to March. Visiting toward the end of the season will give travelers “a unique opportunity to witness the stunning landscapes as they transition into winter,” says West.

“This period is ideal for observing peak whale activity, with potential sightings of humpback whales and orcas, along with gentoo penguins and Antarctic fur seals,” she adds.

Both Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit will be sailing in Antarctica during the 2025-26 season, with itineraries ranging from 11 to 21 days. All cruises start with a hotel stay in Buenos Aires, followed by a charter flight to Ushuaia. On the trip home, charter flights from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires are also included.

Guests visiting the White Continent will be able to sharpen their photography skills through the line’s new “Image Masters” program. Offerings include a workshop led by an onboard nature photographer, as well as in-the-field tips for photo composition, camera technique, editing and retouching.

This New Cruise Ship Will Take You to See Pink Dolphins on the Amazon and Penguins in Antarctica

The newly launched 'Seabourn Pursuit' has eight sea kayaks, a 24-person expedition team, and over-the-top offerings like caviar on demand.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

antarctica cruise seabourn

The newest ship from one of the world’s best luxury cruise lines has just arrived: the Seabourn Pursuit set sail on its inaugural voyage on Saturday, Aug. 12, from Valletta, Malta. The 132-suite ship is designed for expeditions, in the polar extremes as well as more temperate cruising grounds like the Amazon River and the South Pacific.

“My heart is full with pride and excitement as Seabourn Pursuit , our second purpose-built ultra luxury expedition ship, just set sail this weekend from Malta,” Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn, told Travel + Leisure exclusively. “We are so proud because Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture are truly state-of-the-art ships that offer the perfect blend of ultra-luxury and expedition.”

Courtesy of Seabourn

The new ship is more or less a dupe of the Seabourn Venture, which launched in 2022 . Both Pursuit and Venture share a similar architecture, with room for just 264 passengers and a 24-person expedition team that can arrange adventures such as kayak trips, scuba dives, and land-based activities like heart-pumping hikes or cultural immersions, depending on the port.

ERIC LAIGNEL/Courtesy of Seabourn

Both ships have a sleek, yacht-like look and plenty of hardware for hardcore adventures: there’s a flotilla of eight sea kayaks plus a fleet of Zodiacs for remote shore excursions. The ship also has two, six-passenger submarines that can be deployed “at the captain’s discretion,” according to Seabourn , for underwater wildlife viewing and other exploration. Suites come outfitted with Swarovski binoculars and, in polar regions, every guest gets outfitted with a Helly Hansen parka and waterproof backpack.

At the same time, Pursuit is as much a luxury cruise ship as it is an expedition platform, Seabourn executives told T+L. “With remarkable craftsmanship by the [T. Mariotti shipyard] team, an abundance of space, and the breathtaking style of Tihany Design, Seabourn Pursuit raises the bar,” Leahy noted in a statement. All suites have verandas, and the spa, as is the case across the Seabourn fleet, is done in partnership with Dr. Andrew Weil. There’s also no nickel and diming to worry about: pretty much everything you can think of is covered by the fare — including caviar on demand or another glass of Champagne Montaudon.

For all the luxuries on board, the ultimate purpose of the Pursuit is to take visitors to places they couldn’t reach any other way. The ship’s first few months will involve more traditional cruising in fairly familiar territory, including the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. The real expedition fun will start in October, when plans call for Pursuit to head south from Barbados.

The ship is scheduled to venture up the Amazon; along the coasts of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina; and eventually all the way to Antarctica, where it will operate from November through March 2024. By the middle of next year, Pursuit will be in the Pacific, visiting places including the Kimberley region of Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

As befits an expedition vessel, plans will shift on a day-to-day basis, depending on the vibes on board and the prevailing conditions. Deciding what adventures will be on for any given port will fall to that expedition team, as Seabourn executive Robin West shared with T+L in a 2022 interview . “The onboard expedition team is what brings destinations to life,” said West, Seabourn’s vice president and general manager of expeditions.

“It's one of the larger teams in the industry,” West told T+L, “with a huge diversity of skills, resources, and academic backgrounds: submarine pilots, surface supervisor officers, lead kayakers, kayak guides, bear guides, ornithologists, marine biologists, geologists, climatologists, and dive masters.”

In short, there are plenty of unreal experiences, led by experts, awaiting those sailing aboard Seabourn Pursuit . As Leahy told T+L: “We look forward to providing many out of the ordinary experiences and delivering unforgettable ‘Seabourn Moments’ to our extraordinary guests.” Fares for Seabourn Pursuit journeys vary by region: Antarctica trips from $9,899 per person for 11 days, all-inclusive, based on double occupancy; Kimberley expeditions from $8,099 per person for 10 days, all-inclusive, based on double occupancy; South Pacific sailings from $10,799 per person for 15 days, all-inclusive, based on double occupancy.

I know this has been touched on in other threads but I cant seem to find it.

Several have said the Seabourn Antarctic Experience is phenomenal.   What exactly is involved in the Antarctic Experience?  The only excursion I see is a kayak which is far to adventurous for us.

https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/find-a-cruise/W3S25B/6313.html

The Seabourn SA cruise is considerably more expensive (apples to apples) on a per day basis than Silversea SA.   Silversea doesn't include Antarctica, its just Lima to Buenos Aires.  Is that the reason?

There is masses of stuff on this topic.

The Seabourn Antarctic Experience is currently aboard the Quest and sails from Santiago to Buenos Aires or vice versa.  Twice a year, including the Holiday cruise, the Quest goes to South Georgia, an unmissable place.  Apart from the Antarctic Continent and South Georgia it operates just like a regular cruise along the Chilean coast with shore excursions which you pay for.  However, in Antarctica and SG all shore excursions are included - these are usually one per day owing to the size of the ship and the need to limit numbers of people ashore at any one time.  These excursions are generally just walks or modest hikes to get close-up views of the wildlife.  Sometimes there are zodiac cruises.  They also offer kayaks in selected locations at additional cost ( think I'm right here).  All excursions are very weather dependent.

Silversea actually offers many more Antarctica trips than Seabourn.  It currently operates three vessels down there and offers fly-in, fly-out weeks as well as much longer, more traditional cruises.  Silversea's trips are more expensive than Seabourn's.

Other cruise lines are available.  Market leader in this field is often thought to be Lindblad/National Geographic.  Seabourn's new Venture ship might raise the ante.

Thanks

Many Thanks.  Your feedback is very helpful.

I'm thinking a SA Ocean cruise with an Antarctic component.  Looks like that rules Silversea out, could combine an ocean & expedition.

We are on the South Americas, Antarctica, South Georgia cruise next February.  We were originally booked on a Silverseas that was cancelled.  Seabourn is cheaper per diem. In Antarctica, there are daily Zodiac excursions (weather permitting) as well as kayaking for a fee.  The Silverseas cruise we chose did not include all of South America that Seabourn does, so that was an advantage to us.

We were happy we chose Seabourn over the expedition ships for our Antarctica cruise, were also happy we stepped ashore instead of just sailing past Antarctica.

Another option for us is to take a SS or Seabourn expedition and go to Chile & Argentina on our own.  I think the Seabourn cruise I listed above is the best option for us.  Very cool looking trip. I don't see a 2022 Holiday cruise with the same itinerary.  It wasn't easy finding this cruise on the Seabourn site, had to just put in the date (Jan/Feb 2023).

6 hours ago, Fletcher said: Silversea's trips are more expensive than Seabourn's.

But Seabourn's trips are longer than Silversea's, so the actual cost is higher . We wanted to see South Georgia Island, and Seabourn's trips were several days longer, so we're spending less on Silversea tan we would have on Seabourn. And when the Seabourn Venture replaces the Quest, Seabourn's price goes up considerably. Our original goal (pre-Covid) was to sail the new Venture when it debuted, but the cost for the Venture trip, versus the Silversea's Wind, was considerably higher. And additional part of what makes Seabourn more expensive is that Silversea includes free air to South America (and a reasonable price for an upgrade to business class), where Seabourn doesn't include air.

Correct for 2023 cruises

LaDame can be the key 🙂

3 hours ago, RetiredandTravel said: LaDame can be the key

I don't see how $120 once or twice on a trip makes a material difference (particularly if you have onboard credits). Unless you like to dine in La Dame every night? 😉

As you note,  the Seabourn trips are not only longer but have additional ports of call in Chile and/or Argentina, and most people will incur additional costs for excursions in those ports. Of course, you're getting to see more than on the Silversea itineraries, but it's more expensive in total. Both Silversea and Seabourn now include Internet for free, so that's wash. Comparing a 2021-22 trip to Antarctica plus South Georgia Island, the price for a low-deck veranda suite is about $600 less on Seabourn Quest than Silversea Wind; if you add in a few Seabourn excursions, the prices are pretty much identical -- but Silversea includes free air and Seabourn doesn't, and Silversea threw in $1,000 onboard credit which Seabourn didn't. So Silversea is cheaper. But Silversea is an 18-day trip versus Seabourn being a 24-day trip, so on a per-day basis, Seabourn is cheaper.

And the other factor -- for us it was probably the deciding factor -- is the size of the ship. We love the Seabourn triplets, but the Quest carries about 60% more passengers in Antartica. Because all cruise ships follow an international agreement to limit  the number of passengers ashore to 100 at any time, smaller ships with fewer passengers get to make more landings. Many Seabourn passengers are happy with one landing every day or two, but we figure that we're on this once-in-a-lifetime trip to see as much as we can, so the smaller Silversea ship won out for us.

The Seabourn Venture would have provided the best of both worlds -- small ship, beautiful new ship, and Seabourn service we know and love. Before it was delayed for a year, the cruise prices posted for the Venture in 2021-22 were considerably higher, as one would expect on a brand new ship which carries half as many passengers as the Quest. A 21-day trip with South Georgia Island on the Venture was going to be about $6,500 per person more than the Silversea Wind, plus you need to add air. We had decided this was already quite an expensive trip costing close to $50,000, and adding another $16,000+ for the Seabourn Venture was just too much for us. I think the cost difference is similar for 2022-23. (I keep hoping we'll have such a fabulous time on the Silversea ship that I'll forget the Venture was ever a possibility or consideration!)

9 hours ago, RetiredandTravel said: LaDame can be the key 🙂

It really shouldn't be, especially not on such an itinerary as Antarctica.  I've been on several Silversea ships and have never bothered to pay extra for fancy crockery at La Dame.

It was a joke, $120 on a 30-40k tab, get it?  I do find the upcharge absurd.

Granted it wasn't as funny as the Navigator scrambled eggs comment.

I think the cost difference is similar for 2022-23. (I keep hoping we'll have such a fabulous time on the Silversea ship that I'll forget the Venture was ever a possibility or consideration!)

We were on Seabourn Quest Antarctica and so to correct a few things you indicated.....due to restrictions of people allowed in Antartica, Quest does not sail full.  There were around 375 aboard our sailing.  We were divided into groups and during the 8 days we were in Antarctica, we had a landing ashore every day and also had an additional "off ship" activity almost every day.  These additional off ship activities included zodiac trips in the surrounding waters checking out icebergs and local wildlife including whales, seals, birds, etc. No Seabourn passenger had to be happy with one landing every other day or so unless they chose to not participate.  The expedition team aboard Quest were amazing and there were 2-3 different lectures most days beside the team members being out and about the ship answering questions and pointing out various interesting things.

Enjoy your cruise on Silversea - any day you are ashore in Antarctica is the best!

It is not possible to do a simple per diem cost comparison between Seabourn Quest and Silversea for Antarctica because SB Quest itineraries include about 7 days sailing down Chilean coast just to get to Ushuaia plus another 2 days to get to Buenos Aires via Montevideo.  Those are low-value days that drag down the daily cost average.  To me, those days are worth only $350-400 per day per person for the lowest cabin category.

The main cost component for Antarctica is made up of the days starting at Ushuaia to the Antarctica Peninsula (plus South Georgia and/or Falklands) and back to Ushuaia.  Those days include the "Antarctica Experience" and mirror the itineraries from most expedition ships for Antarctica.

Pre-covid, most expedition ships (including the old Silversea Explorer and National Geographic/Lindblad) were charging just above $1,000 per person per day for the lowest cabin category.  I haven't looked into this recently, but I understand Seabourn Venture was priced higher to begin with and is now priced even higher post-Covid.

In case it came off wrong, my comments about the Quest were not meant to be disparaging. Quest sails with up to 400 passengers in Antarctica, so you were slightly below their maximum capacity. In any case, I was just comparing that with one of the Silversea ships, which sail with up to 250 passengers aboard. That difference does make a difference in how many landings each passenger can participate it; on the Quest it is one a day whereas on Silversea it can be two a day -- all dependent on weather conditions, of course. My travel agent, who books a great deal with both Seabourn and Silversea, said that on some Quest trips, when the weather is less-than-optimal and they only have a couple hours, not every passenger is able to get off for a landing every day. It sounds like you hit the sweet spot and didn't have weather complications -- and I can only hope and dream that will be true for us! 😉 Again, I'm not suggesting the Quest isn't a fine option for visiting Antarctica; I was only sharing that we opted for a smaller ship in order to have a greater chance of doing more landings.

No offense taken - I am just relating our experience and that of 4 other couples that have done Seabourn Antarctica cruises at different times in the last few years...weather conditions did effect one of our days and no one was able to tender into shore (I don't think that the number of guest aboard mattered)....our Captain just found a different area and we all were off the ship for a wonderful experience  later in the day.   I was trying to relate actual onboard experience not I heard from someone else who heard from some else.

We’re getting ready for our Antarctica expedition cruise in Dec on the Quest and trying to determine whether to rent the boots from SB or purchase our own.

Renting question for those with prior experience getting them from SB: Are the boots pretty close to the correct size? If I wear a size 11, should I order an 11 or 12?

Buying them online from those in the know: which brand and type would you recommend we look at?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cool Cruiser

We purchased ours since we have other opportunities to wear them. I believe the ones that they used are Bogs classic high and that is what we purchased from the Bogs website. It looks like that it might have been rebranded to Workman 17" tall. Since they come in full sizes only it ended up that we ordered ours 1/2 size up to allow room for socks.  (I wear 9 1/2 and ordered a 10, wife 7 1/2 and ordered an 8).

Thanks! Definitely worth the extra few bucks to purchase the boots at $129 versus $85 to rent.

We also purchased our boots on our first expedition cruise (Greenland on Silversea a few years ago) because we know we had Antarctica on our short-term cruise list, and possibly the other side of Greenland and Canada after that. So we decided to own our own. I also have size 13 wide feet, and I was concerned whether the rental boots would fit well, and that they might not have extras in a larger size if I needed them. So we now own two pairs of Bogs boots.

We bought the ones that looked like the picture of the ones Silversea was renting, which were  the Bogs Ultra High (#51377), not the Bogs Classic High (#60142) mentioned above. The Ultra High (15" tall) are not actually any higher, but they have handholds which make them much easier to pull on, and there's a difference in the sole between the two as best I remember. The Workmen's boot (#73132) mentioned above is a different model which is slightly lighter (4.24 lb versus 5 lb) but I'm not sure they're 100% waterproof. (Those are the men's model numbers; the women's equivalents have different numbers.)

The downside of buying the boots, of course, is that you have to lug them with you. Those 5 pounds are 10% of my luggage capacity! I have thought about wearing them on the plane to avoid packing them, but I didn't want the big, heavy, warm boots for a long flight. I can't remember; I might have packed one pair in our carry-on bag on our previous cruise. We're heading for Antarctica this winter -- hopefully! -- so I'll need to revisit my packing strategy.

We opted to rent due to the weight of the boots in packing. Even if the size you order doesn't fit, there is a size exchange as there is with the jackets.

We did see a number of people who brought their own boots (galosh type) that did not pass muster and they ended up having to rent them anyway.

Just our experience...........

We went on one of the early sailings with Seabourn, 2014, and were told to rent boots as walking through the penguin highways you will pick up unwanted smells which didnt want to wash off the boots which one didnt really want in ones suitcase. I dont know if this was true or not but as the boots wouldnt be worn again renting to us was the way to go.

Also Seabourn did have a swap day where one could change the jackets, boots etc if the supplied ones weren't a good fit

I seem to remember when we booked Seabourn were going to sail with the ship half full. Getting closer to the sailing we were offered an upgrade or a discount as there were going to be more passengers to share the cost, Seabourn thought they could add a few more passengers and still keep everybody happy. I cant remember the actual number of passengers we had I think we were the third or fourth sailing as Seabourn were still fine cruising the Antarctica cruises

We would go with Seabourn again to Antarctica anytime as the cruise was definitely the best we have been on and have since  changed all our cruising to Seabourn

A new option to consider for Antarctica is the Crystal Endeavor.  She holds only 220 if full (not sure how many will be allowed for Antarctica) , and offers shorter cruises out of Ushuia to focus on Antarctica, skipping SA.

https://www.crystalcruises.com/voyage/ushuaia-roundtrip-yen211210-11

We just got off this gorgeous ship after a 10 day circumnavigation of Iceland, which was not sold out as we only had 93 pax on board (3 more circumnavigations are left this season if you are interested in short term booking, BTW, Iceland is amazing). I was on her second voyage, and there were still some minor tech issues to work out but it is coming along.

There were 16 expedition team members on board, around 200 staff.  I expect the expedition staffing will remain excellent for Antarctica.

The food in the MDR (Waterside) was the best I have ever had on a luxury ship, as was the dining service (no "free" caviar, but that is ok).  It was my first expedition cruise (though admittedly a soft expedition) and the first time I stepped into a Zodiak, and I have gained confidence.

All pax and crew were vaxed, and antigen tested before boarding, but only crew wore required to wear masks on the ship.

I will consider this amazing ship for my first trip to Antarctica, unless Covid stops her from sailing.

I am not a Crystal cheerleader either, and have cruised several different luxury lines.  Hapag Lloyd was my favorite, and they go to Antarctica too,  but they won't accept Americans right now.

Thanks for your indepth insights. After my DW read your write-up, we have decided to now rent our boots, especially since we should be able exchange them if the original size we chose didn't fit. Then there is the "after excursion" smell issue to consider. 😎

We very much enjoy cruising with Crystal on the Serenity and Symphony. However, those $1,500+ pp/day starting prices for their Endeavor expedition cruises are just a little too steep for us.

Seabourn did have metal cupboards on the stern of deck 4? where you left your boots so the boots weren't in your cabin with you

Also we had Robin West who was the Expedition leader along with 13 or 14 on his Expedition team who were very knowledgeable about the birds, sea life etc of Antarctica. Robin used to say if you want to know anything just ask one of his walking encyclopedias

Antarctica Cruises

It is a profound experience to set eyes upon Antarctica for the first time. Breathtaking vistas, otherworldly wildlife and the journey itself leave an indelible mark on visitors. Here is a land of paradoxes: the world's biggest desert that is also the world's largest ice sheet, nearly two miles thick. Virtually unexplored just 150 years ago, this continent belongs to no nation, and is protected by an international treaty for peaceful scientific pursuit. Explore the “White Continent” in Viking comfort with an Antarctica expedition.

Cruise review: The Seabourn Pursuit expedition experience

Megan Catterall, LUXE by itravel shares insight on Seabourn's expedition offering

Go back to the e-newsletter

When the opportunity arose for luxury cruise expert  Megan Catterall to join an expedition voyage with Seabourn through lesser-travelled regions of the Pacific, she was quick to jump at it. And with the voyage aboard the newest purpose-built luxury expedition ship on the market, Seabourn Pursuit , who could blame the LUXE by itravel advisor.

Catterall was one of a small contingent of Australian advisors hand-picked to experience Seabourn’s expedition product on a, relatively, close-to-home sailing from Guam in May 2024. The 14-day Isles of Papua New Guinea expedition encompassed some of the most remote islands in the North Pacific waters of Micronesia (one of which was uninhabited aside from thousands of birds), an equator crossing, and frequent zodiac excursions directly from Seabourn Pursuit to other isolated islands and villages in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, meeting locals and watching their colourful performances of song and dance.

LATTE , also onboard Pursuit for the expedition which concluded in Honiara, chatted with Catterall in order to share her view on Seabourn’s expedition product and program.

What was a highlight for you aboard Seabourn Pursuit ?

I loved Seabourn Square as I love a good coffee. Seabourn’s baristas sure do have it perfected when it comes to a fresh brew, and they also have pastries available (all day!) and can you keep a secret? The almond croissants are freshly backed each morning, hot out of the oven, so yes that was a joy to see and of course on holidays you can indulge! But they go fast so you have to be quick! But Seabourn Square is so much more than a coffee spot. It’s a space to relax. There are puzzles and lots seating, tranquil indoor and outdoor, and there’s also a library.

The Starlink internet onboard is so fast and just great even in this remote part of the world. I was able to work whilst on this fam, and so I would often find myself in Seabourn Square clearing emails and responding to clients.

What was a highlight of your Seabourn Pursuit suite?

I loved the bed, so dreamy, and the sheets just the best thread count, and the pillows, wow! But for an expedition ship the bathroom was the best and largest I have ever seen. So spacious with its twin sinks, full marble and bath and separate shower. Beautiful Moulton Brown products in large bottles for easy use, but also good for the environment as refillable. This is standard, so even lead-in has the same size bathrooms. The choice of soaps offered too was impressive. Our cabin attendants Maureen and Wandi were just amazing and our suite and that extra care was just superb feeling very spoilt that comes with ultra-luxury cruising.

A dining highlight?

I loved the Restaurant. Each night the menu would change but always had the Classic selection as an alternative. The desserts were just stunning. For me this type of dinning and the choice and wine pairing was magnificent. One of my favourites from the Classic range was grilled fillet of double tenderloin cooked to order and always perfect medium rare for me, served with spinach, green beans, potato gratin and béarnaise sauce. Followed by the mouth-watering soufflé  which changed nightly, perfectly cooked and the waiters executed delivery superbly.

Your favourite dish, snack, or meal that stands out for you that you’ll be raving about?

Caviar anywhere and anytime is a Seabourn tradition and even on expedition. It was a standout. Onboard any Seabourn cruise the caviar service is a highlight. We would have it pre-dinner by the pool or in one of the many lounges with a glass of French champagne.

And yes we have a found another secret, Chefs Tony’s Childhood Banana split! It’s only available via In-Suite Dining – thank you to the guests that told us about it on Day 6 (Kevin and Nicole!) , but it sure was a highlight. One is enough to share, just ask for two spoons.

antarctica cruise seabourn

The food and the choice of dining is what blew me away. From Sushi in The Club, Modern cuisine in The Colonnade (and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner), with a changing theme every evening, and with table service. In-Suite Dining 24-hour service, the Square, The Restaurant…. Also Ocean and Earth was showcased three nights on our sailing , where The Colonnade turns into O & E , different table settings used to go with the theme. Another highlight for us was being in the Tropics meant dinning alfresco on the back deck with new friends, under the stars.

And I can’t forget afternoon tea served in The Constellation Lounge high tea-style, served so elegantly.

Seabourn Pursuit was just perfect and had something for everyone. Also no reservation was needed anywhere on this ship for dining, anywhere! How good is that?

Your favourite itinerary experience?

There were so many highlights. All the islands truly welcomed us and you could feel there love and energy. But Ifalik Island truly stole my heart. Being welcomed by traditional dance and smiles, we explored its beauty in the morning and then by kayak in the afternoon around the island with its crystal clear waters, while spotting turtles and vibrant coral from our kayak made this afternoon just priceless. The local children, swimming and riding handmade canoes beside us, jumping off our Zodiacs when we were back onboard. What a day. Seabourn Expedition’s optional sea-kayaking is a must do!

antarctica cruise seabourn

The snorkelling was also fantastic through the coral coves, and at every opportunity we would be on our Zodiac. The onboard gear provided by Seabourn was first class, even anti fog for the masks. There are even pool noodles  for floating aids which was just perfect. Snorkelling is complimentary for everyone on Seabourn. Once you are fitted on Day 1 with flippers and a mask, and a wet bag to store and they are yours for the duration and stored in you’re personal cubby in the mud room. They use the best equipment , I also learned that currently Scuba Diving is also included with limited spaces. Well done Seabourn. You are Bourn to be in the Sea!

Your thoughts on the expedition element of the itinerary and the team?

Absolutely exceptional. The Expedition Crew are amazing. Hearing from them about nature and the wildlife, the daily briefings, how passionate they are about their chosen field.

Seabourn Pursuit is designed to have great flow, and at no time was there queues. It’s so orderly and we had a full ship, and everyone got to see and do everything.

antarctica cruise seabourn

The itinerary and what we saw was more than I expected. The places and the remoteness of where we visited was just phenomenal. It was curated perfectly, and I look back now and can’t believe what we have seen really and its in our own back yard.

These islands and the cultures are real. The dances and greetings were real. It’s the families and children and seeing how important education is and them showing us their schools and what they are learning.

How Seabourn navigated us around was perfect. We felt safe. At times we had escorts to the mountains in convoys to see the Baining fire dance and again around Honiara, but that is how travel is in these remote islands.

They may not have streetlights, so they need to make sure we were all ok too, whilst experiencing unique culture.

I loved boarding our daily Zodiacs and the whole organisation down in the mud rooms – it really is run to perfection.

antarctica cruise seabourn

The announcement over the PA in English informing us what to wear on our feet (if it’s a wet landing or dry) and hats, and how Seabourn provide sunscreen and insect repellent if need be. What to bring , the refillable water bottles on the ship that all staterooms have. Towels and walking sticks provided too for the walks on unstable ground… Seabourn really have thought of everything.

My clients were onboard, most 80 years young, and they were so happy and able to do and see it all each, snorkelling also off the zodiacs , the care and attention that each crew member gave was truly wonderful.

Something that you feel could use improvement or some fine-tuning?

Seabourn Pursuit was visiting this region for the very first time, so no criticism as they did a stellar job in my opinion. Some waters were uncharted and we navigated through just super. I loved hearing all from our Captain and the open bridge allows us a glimpse of what they do up there.

antarctica cruise seabourn

One suggestion though is handling foreign currency. When we are visiting these remote islands, I brought along US dollars and small denominations, which I always travel with, but the greenback is not king in these places. They need their local currency. Knowing this now, I wish I had bought more of their actual currency. We need to educate guests to bring the right dollars for exchange. Perhaps Seabourn could have more opportunities onboard for guests to exchange currencies. We did have an opportunity on the first day in Papua New Guinea when a bank was briefly set up on the ship, but it wasn’t repeated. Other than that bugbear, Seabourn are exceptional. The care and detail is in everything.

And the type of client will you be recommending Seabourn Expedition to?

Seabourn Expedition is open to all ages. People who want to experience these remote places, you need the best team behind you and the opportunities that expedition can take you to and Seabourn has it all.

It’s also perfect for generational travel so yes bring the grand teens, create those lasting memories.

I personally can’t wait to sell more of this and spread the word how good traveling like this is to all my clients. This is extraordinary and the team onboard, and let’s be honest, when you are miles from anywhere you need a full team and the right medical equipment so you can feel safe.

antarctica cruise seabourn

It’s ultra- luxury but so enjoyable and at no time do you need a black tie! She is perfect for anyone that is interested in culture and nature and seeing the world’s most remote places. So yes, Seabourn Pursuit is made for you!

This ship even had nightly entertainment with shows, singers and a band. We danced on the back deck. I enjoyed reading the daily Herald with the times and run down, trivia times and fun bago game with Dave our wonderful Cruise Director.

So for people that think expedition is boring and its only about lectures, its most definitely NOT. There is so much to do. Fourteen days onboard and I still didn’t get to do everything. We were busy and active but also had an immersive cultural experience.

Summing up, I was a guest on this fabulous famil and I was so impressed with the itinerary. When I was asked in January I invited clients to join me, and they did, so it was enjoyable working and travelling.

I sure love what I do!

Inspired to sail in style with Seabourn? We’ve highlighted just three exciting itineraries to get you started.

Alaska Fjords and Canadian Inside Passage

antarctica cruise seabourn

Best for: Whale watching, breathtaking scenery, wildlife encounters

Departing from Juneau, your first stop on your seven-day voyage aboard Seabourn Odyssey is the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness , a 653,179-acre Alaskan nature preserve marked by dramatic scenery that includes glaciers, forests, and two stunning fjords. Designated as a wilderness area in 1980, the preserve is rife with wildlife. You’re likely to spot both brown and black bears, wolves, deer, mountain goats, and seals.

As you sail to your next destination, keep your eyes out for even more wildlife – you’ll journey through the Stephens Passage, a 105-mile channel between craggy peaks that is known for its whale- and sea lion-watching. While you cruise to your next destination, you can take full advantage of the many onboard amenities, from the top-notch fitness center to the observation bar, which offers seascape views. Take a dip in the top deck pool or partake in some at-sea enrichment at the Discover Center, which hosts natural history and cultural programming.

A notable stop is Rudyerd Bay, carved out by glaciers within the Misty Fjords National Monument . Card Members booking with the Cruise Privileges Program can use their $300 onboard credit toward a Ventures by Seabourn. Their Kayak Misty Fjords venture is an opportunity to take in the towering granite cliffs, dark forests, and lush vegetation that blankets the coastline as you cruise through the pristine waters. Wildlife is abundant here too, with bald eagles, porpoises, humpback whales, and orcas among the many animals that call the fjords home.

Your journey concludes in Vancouver, after passing through channels and bays known for their abundant wildlife and a stop at Cormorant Island. Visit U'mista Cultural Centre, Canada's longest-running First Nations museum, or explore Cormorant by kayak as you glide past seals and shorebirds.

Celtic Sea and Portugal’s Silver Coast

antarctica cruise seabourn

Best for: Architecture, cultural immersion, art

Embark on a 14-day European adventure that departs from Dover, England and takes you through ports in France, Spain, Ireland, and more.

Cruise aboard Seabourn Ovation through the emerald waters of the Celtic Sea, whose salt is known for its healing properties, rivaling Himalayan sea salt. Dock in the picturesque French fishing town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz , where you can tour a centuries-old church, stroll the coastal path of Sentier du Littoral , and dine at one of the many charming waterfront restaurants in the promenade.

A stop in the Irish port of Bantry Bay offers the opportunity to tour the green countryside of West Cork by car, stopping in some of the small, lively towns for a pint. Or visit the Bantry House and Garden , a sprawling estate dating back to around 1710 where you can stroll through lush gardens and experience a formal tea service.

Tour the vineyards in the coastal French village of Le Verdon-sur-Mer, where you can sample the Bordeaux wines the region is known for. When you dock in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao , admire contemporary art at the famed Guggenheim Museum – and indulge in an authentic meal of local tapas.

Your voyage ends in Lisbon, where more cultural and culinary delights await.

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and Greek Isles

antarctica cruise seabourn

Best for: Pristine beaches, ancient ruins, crystal clear waters

The Turquoise Coast – also known as the Turkish Riviera – is marked by spectacular beaches and crystal clear, cerulean waters. Your seven-day voyage aboard Seabourn Encore begins in Athens , where you’ll set sail for the island of Cyprus . You’ll dock in Limassol , where you can explore archaeological sites dating back to 7,000 B.C. and indulge in fine Mediterranean wines – the seaside city is a wine-making hub and is home to numerous pastoral vineyards.

The Turkish coastal city of Antalya notably combines temperate weather and beaches with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Wander through ancient Roman ruins; explore a 13th-century Seljuk mosque; pick up keepsakes by local artisans in the bustling bazaars; and grab a bite to eat at one of the quaint cafes that line the winding streets of the Old Quarter.

You’ll also stop at the Greek islands of  Crete and Milos , both of which have plenty of appeal and comparatively fewer crowds than Mykonos. Milos was formed by volcanic eruptions and is known today for its beaches and vibrant fishing villages.

The Mediterranean voyage concludes back in Athens, where you can tour even more ancient wonders like the Acropolis and the Parthenon, as well as the Athens National Garden.

antarctica cruise seabourn

These three itineraries are just a taste of the many offerings in Seabourn’s diverse portfolio—and there’s more to come. In spring 2025, Seabourn will debut The Collection , a series of even more finely curated sailings that feature access to exclusive shoreside events and experiences. Add some spice to your excursion with Andalusian Nights: Spotlight On Seville , a 10-day voyage between Barcelona and Lisbon that stops in Seville for an evening of fine dining and flamenco at Villa Luisa, an estate dating back to the 1920s with beautifully manicured gardens. Oenophiles might opt for Vineyard Vistas: An Evening In Bordeaux , an eight-day sail between Lisbon and Dublin with a stop in Bordeaux for an exclusive wine dinner at the opulent Château Smith Haut Lafitte. From sought-after seats at tennis matches to private dinners at vineyard chateaus, every itinerary in The Collection is set to provide a truly singular experience at sea and onshore.

However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on  amextravel.com  and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant’s processing of transactions to determine the transaction date. The transaction date may differ from the date you made the purchase if, for example, there is a delay in the merchant submitting the transaction to us or if the merchant uses another date as the transaction date. This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to us as occurring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. If the Card Account is cancelled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. Please refer to  AmericanExpress.com/FHR  and  AmericanExpress.com/HC  for more information about Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, respectively.

5X Membership Rewards ®  Points Platinum Card:  Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards ®  point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card ®  or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. If booking is cancelled, the extra points will be deducted from the Membership Rewards account. Extra points will be credited to the Membership Rewards account approximately 6-10 weeks after eligible purchases appear on the billing statement. Additional point bonuses you may receive with your Card on other purchase categories from American Express may not be combined with this benefit (e.g., 1.5X and 2X bonuses for Business Platinum Card Members, etc.). Purchases eligible for multiple additional point bonuses will only receive the highest eligible bonus. The benefits associated with the Additional Card(s) you choose may be different than the benefits associated with your basic Card. To learn about the benefits associated with Additional Card(s) you choose, please call the number on the back of your Card.

General Guidelines for Visitors to the Antarctic

Guidelines for visitors to the antarctic.

All visits to Antarctica should be conducted in accordance with the Antarctic Treaty, its Protocol on Environmental Protection, and relevant Measures and Resolutions adopted at Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM). Visits may only occur after prior approval by the relevant national authority.

These Guidelines provide general advice for visiting any location, with the aim of ensuring visits do not have adverse impacts on the Antarctic environment, or on its scientific and aesthetic values. ATCM Site Guidelines for Visitors provide additional site-specific advice for some locations. Read these Guidelines before you visit Antarctica and plan how to minimize your impact.

If you are part of a guided visitor group, pay attention to your guides, and follow their instructions. If you have organized your own visit, you are responsible for abiding by these guidelines. You are also responsible for identifying the features of the sites you visit that may be vulnerable to visitor impacts, and for complying with any site specific requirements, including Site Guidelines, Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) and Antarctic Specially Managed Area (ASMA) management plans, or station visit guidelines. Guidelines for particular activities or risks (such as aircraft use, or avoiding the introduction of non-native species) may also apply. Management plans, a list of historic sites and monuments, and other relevant information can be found at  https://www.ats.aq/e/protected.html . Site Guidelines can be found at  https://www.ats.aq/devAS/Ats/VisitorSiteGuidelines .

PROTECT ANTARCTIC WILDLIFE

WILDLIFE The taking of, or harmful interference with, Antarctic wildlife is prohibited except in accordance with a permit

•    When in the vicinity of wildlife, walk slowly and carefully, keep noise to a minimum, and maintain an appropriate separation distance. Consider the topography of the site, as this may have an impact on the vulnerability of wildlife to disturbance.

•   Observe wildlife behavior. If wildlife changes its behavior stop moving, or slowly increase your distance. •   Animals are particularly sensitive to disturbance when they are breeding (including nesting) or molting. Stay outside the margins of a colony and observe from a distance. •   Always give animals the right of way and do not block their access routes to the sea. •   Do not feed wildlife or leave food or scraps lying around.

•   Vegetation, including mosses and lichens, is fragile and very slow growing. Do not damage the vegetation by walking, driving or landing on any moss beds or lichen covered rocks. •   When travelling on foot, stay on established tracks whenever possible to minimize disturbance or damage to the soil and vegetated surfaces. Where a track does not exist, take the most direct route and avoid vegetation, fragile terrain, scree slopes, and wildlife.

INTRODUCTION OF NON-NATIVE SPECIES

•   Do not introduce any plants or animals into the Antarctic. •   In order to prevent the introduction of non-native species and disease, carefully wash boots and clean all equipment including clothes, bags, tripods, tents and walking sticks before bringing them to Antarctica. Pay particular attention to boot treads, velcro fastenings and pockets which could contain soil or seeds. Vehicles and aircraft should also be cleaned. •   The transfer of species and disease between locations in Antarctica is also a concern. Ensure all clothing and equipment is cleaned before moving between sites.

RESPECT PROTECTED AREAS

Activities in Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) or Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMAs) must comply with the provisions of the relevant Management Plan. Many historic sites and monuments (HSMs) have been formally designated and protected.

SPECIALLY MANAGED AND SPECIALLY PROTECTED AREAS

•   A permit from your national authority is required for entry into any ASPA. Carry the permit and obey any permit conditions at all times while visiting an ASPA. •   Check the locations and boundaries of ASPAs and ASMAs in advance. Refer to the provisions of the Management Plan and abide by any restrictions regarding the conduct of activities in or near these areas.

HISTORIC SITES AND MONUMENTS AND OTHER STRUCTURES

•   Historic huts and structures can in some cases be used for tourist, recreational and educational visits. Visitors should not use them for other purposes except in emergency circumstances. •   Do not interfere with, deface or vandalize any historic site, monument, or artifact, or other building or emergency refuge (whether occupied or unoccupied). •   If you come across an item that may be of historic value that authorities may not be aware of, do not disturb it. Notify your expedition leader or national authorities. •   Before entering any historic structure, clean your boots of snow and grit and remove snow and water from clothes, as these can cause damage to structures or artifacts. •   Take care not to tread on any artifacts which may be obscured by snow when moving around historic sites.

RESPECT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Do not interfere with scientific research, facilities or equipment.

•   Obtain permission before visiting Antarctic stations. •   Reconfirm scheduled visits no less than 24-72 hours before arriving. •   All visitors must comply with any site specific rules when visiting Antarctic stations.

•   Do not interfere with, or remove, scientific equipment or markers, and do not disturb experimental study sites, field camps or stored supplies.

KEEP ANTARCTICA PRISTINE

Antarctica remains relatively pristine. It is the largest wilderness area on earth. Please leave no trace of your visit.

•   Do not deposit any litter or garbage on land nor discard it into the sea. •   At stations or camps smoke only at designated areas, to avoid litter and risk of fire to structures. Collect ash and litter for disposal outside Antarctica. •   Ensure that wastes are managed in accordance with Annexes III and IV of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. •   Ensure that all equipment and rubbish is secured at all times in such a way as to prevent dispersal into the environment through high winds or wildlife foraging.

WILDERNESS VALUES

•   Do not disturb or pollute lakes, streams, rivers or other water bodies (e.g. by walking, washing yourself or your equipment, throwing stones, etc.) •   Do not paint or engrave names or graffiti on any man-made or natural surface in Antarctica. •   Do not take souvenirs, whether man-made, biological or geological items, including feathers, bones, eggs, vegetation, soil, rocks, meteorites or fossils. •   Place tents and equipment on snow or at previously used campsites where possible.

Be prepared for severe and changeable weather. Ensure that your equipment and clothing meet Antarctic standards. Remember that the Antarctic environment is inhospitable, unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS/ PREPARATIONS

•   Know your capabilities, the dangers posed by the Antarctic environment, and act accordingly. Plan activities with safety in mind at all times. •   Keep a safe distance from dangerous wildlife like fur seals, both on land and at sea. Keep at least 15m away, where practicable. •   If you are travelling in a group, act on the advice and instructions of your leaders. Do not stray from your group. •   Do not walk onto glaciers or large snow fields without proper equipment and experience. There is a real danger of falling into hidden crevasses. •   Do not expect a rescue service. Self-sufficiency is increased and risks reduced by sound planning, quality equipment, and trained personnel. •   Do not enter emergency refuges (except in emergencies). If you use equipment or food from a refuge, inform the nearest research station or national authority once the emergency is over. •   Respect any smoking restrictions. Use of combustion style lanterns and naked flames in or around historic structures is strictly forbidden. Take great care to safeguard against the danger of fire. This is a real hazard in the dry environment of Antarctica.

LANDING AND TRANSPORT REQUIREMENTS

Act in Antarctica in such a way so as to minimize potential impacts on the environment, wildlife and associated ecosystems, or the conduct of scientific research.

•   Do not use aircraft, vessels, small boats, hovercraft or other means of transport in ways that disturb wildlife, either at sea or on land. •   Avoid overflying concentrations of birds and seals. Follow the advice in Resolution 2 (2004) Guidelines for the operation of aircraft near concentrations of birds in Antarctica, available from www.ats.aq/devAS/info_measures_list.aspx?lang=e. •   Refilling of fuel tanks for small boats should take place in a way that ensures any spills can be contained, for example onboard a vessel. •   Small boats must be free of any soil, plants, animals or animal products and must be checked for the presence of any soil, plants, animals or animal products prior to the commencement of any ship-to-shore operations. Small boats must at all times regulate their course and speed so as to minimize disturbance to wildlife and to avoid any collisions with wildlife.

•   Only one ship may visit a site at any one time. •   Ships carrying more than 200 passengers (Category 2 Vessels) are restricted from landing at certain environmentally sensitive sites. •   Vessels with more than 500 passengers shall not make landings in Antarctica.

WHILE PASSENGERS ARE ASHORE

•   A maximum of 100 passengers may be ashore from a vessel at any one time, unless site specific advice requires fewer passengers. •   During landings from vessels, maintain a 1:20 guide to passenger ratio at all sites, unless site specific advice requires more guides.

Ship review: Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess

  • Share by email

Overview: The largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the first in the all-new Sphere class, brings a host of pioneering features. There’s a big focus on light and space, most visible in the eye-catching orbs that protrude from the sides of the 4,300-passenger ship and the glass dome dominating the front.

Family facilities are enhanced with the Park19 activity zone, which includes the new-to-ocean Sea Breeze aerial rollercoaster zipline. Sun Princess is also the first in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas.

Cabins: The 2,157 staterooms include 1,500 balcony cabins – the most on any Princess ship – 50 suites and 100 connecting cabins. The new Signature Collection suites include access to a private lounge, dining room and sun deck, although they are in different areas rather than a dedicated ship-within-a-ship complex.

Also new are sunny Cabana Mini-Suites that come with their own cabana area and a balcony. Decorated in muted tones, cabins are well designed and include innovative touches, such as motion sensor lighting in bedside cabinets.

Food and drink: Princess fans will find favourites, such as Sabatini’s Italian and the Crown Grill steakhouse (pictured below), plus a lot more among the 29 restaurants and bars. The speciality restaurants, which all cost an extra $45, include the new Umai Teppanyaki, which serves up great food and entertainment in equal measure.

Horizons dining room has been given a facelift and now takes up three floors – with the best tables overlooking the back of the ship, a casual American diner at the top and more formal dining on the other levels.

Meanwhile, couples can push the boat out with the $149 tasting menu at the artistically inspired Love by Britto, while pub lovers can head to O’Malley’s for toe-tapping Irish tunes.

Facilities: Sun Princess has five pools, including the spectacular Wake View infinity pool, and a large gym. The glass-enclosed Dome (pictured below) is a pool and lounging area by day and performance venue by night, with thrilling aerial shows. The redesigned Princess Arena showcases four productions – three of them new – in an adaptable space that can host theatre in the round.

Meanwhile, the lively Piazza, the central three-storey atrium, is an all-day entertainment hub with a packed programme of music, performances, game shows and classes, such as line dancing.

USP: Accessed through a tucked-away door, Spellbound is a unique and atmospheric bar and small theatre venue combining magic, mystery and mixology, with cocktails such as Escape from Houdini’s Chest served from a smoke-filled casket. It costs $149, including a themed meal.

Book it: A seven-night Mediterranean with France & Italy cruise, departing on April 5, 2025, and sailing from Barcelona to La Spezia, with calls at Gibraltar, Marseille and Genoa, costs from £849 per person in an interior cabin, excluding flights. onesourcecruises.com ; princess.com
