Regent Seven Seas Cruises receives high marks from experts and travelers alike for its all-inclusive approach and commitment to luxury service. All six of Regent's ships –  Seven Seas Navigator ,  Seven Seas Mariner ,  Seven Seas Explorer , Seven Seas Voyager ,  Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur (scheduled to debut in November 2023) offer all-suite accommodations. And with an almost one-to-one crew-to-passenger ratio, the line prides itself on its attentive staff and personalized experience.

How long you're on board a Regent ship can vary greatly, with voyages ranging from seven to 168 nights. Regent's popular itineraries include stops in hundreds of ports throughout  Africa ,  Alaska , Asia , the  Caribbean ,  Europe  and more.

Guests can explore new places with unlimited complimentary shore excursions that vary by itinerary. They'll also find Regent Choice small group tours that come with a fee and offer a wide variety of excursions from paella-making classes in Valencia, Spain to going on a penguin safari in the Falkland Islands. There's also plenty to do without leaving the ship, including nightly onboard entertainment, the Serene Spa & Wellness center, a library and card room and a putting green. A state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Center is on the line's three newest ships: Seven Seas Grandeur , Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer .

Select sailings feature enrichment series led by experts in a variety of fields, from science and the arts to health and wellness practices. Culinary options abound with gourmet venues ranging from an upscale steakhouse, Prime 7, to Sette Mari at La Veranda, an informal Italian eatery. Pacific Rim (on select ships) highlights the cuisines and flavors throughout Asia and Chartreuse features delectable French fare in an elegant setting (not available on Seven Seas Navigator ).

U.S. News Insider Tip: Regent Seven Seas is an ultra-luxury cruise line that features stunning interior design, top-notch service and some of the most expensive ships ever built. Still, guests will find a relaxed and casually elegant atmosphere on board Regent’s six vessels. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

Before You Book

  • A 15% deposit is required for all cruises. For cruises of 14 nights or fewer, final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. On longer cruises, the remaining balance is due 150 days before you sail. If you book fewer than 90 days before the ship is scheduled to depart, you'll have to pay in full within 24 hours of booking.
  • Cruise cancellation fees vary depending on the length of the cruise and how far out you cancel. For more information, see the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Terms and Conditions page .
  • Children younger than six months are not permitted on Regent cruises, and infants must be at least 1 year old to sail on a voyage with three or more consecutive days at sea. Guests younger than 18 years old must share a suite with a guest who is 18 or older. Pregnant women who reach 24 weeks at any time before or during the cruise will be denied boarding.

Before You Board

  • You will receive cruise documents, including e-tickets, approximately 45 days prior to your ship's departure date.
  • Ships begin boarding at noon on the scheduled day of departure. If you are traveling from a U.S. port, you must board at least two hours prior to sailing time; if you are leaving from a port outside the U.S., you must board at least 90 minutes prior to departure.
  • Guests are required to bring the appropriate travel documents; passport, visa and vaccination requirements vary by itinerary. The cruise line requires all guests have passports that are valid for six months after the cruise ends, regardless of ports of call. For more information about entry requirements for various countries, visit the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  and World Health Organization websites.
  • Passengers can book shore excursions up to 300 days before the start of their cruise (or up to 365 days in advance for guests eligible for the Concierge Amenities) by visiting Regent's My Account page . Dinner reservations can also be made through the My Account portal beginning 75 days before the ship's departure date (or 90 days before embarkation for travelers in Concierge Suites or higher). If you desire additional reservations, you may speak with the restaurant's maître d' once on board. Any dietary restrictions must be sent to Regent Seven Seas via email at least 120 days prior to departure for sailings embarking in the U.S. and 150 days before all other trips.
  • Regent Seven Seas does not enforce weight, size or quantity restrictions for baggage. However, the cruise line suggests travelers check with their airline and pack accordingly.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.

All-Inclusive Luxury Aboard Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur

Cruising southern Europe on Seven Seas Grandeur is an experience I recommend adding to your bucket list. The ship features remarkable detail in service and culinary offerings that would make any Michelin-starred restaurant green with envy. This ship’s interior design is sleek, elegant, and incredibly comfortable, with a world-class art collection adorning the walls of the spacious common areas. There’s even a Faberge egg, the only one at sea.

Even when it’s fully booked, the ship’s layout ensures you’ll always feel comfortable, with plenty of space to move around. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide stunning views of the sea, coastlines, and ports of call , perfect for capturing unforgettable moments .

Seven Seas Grandeur is designed to be inclusive and welcoming. The crew works diligently to ensure every guest feels at home, and the ship’s accessibility features allow everyone, including those with mobility challenges, to fully enjoy all the amenities.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises distinguishes itself by providing unlimited complimentary shore excursions in each port of call. The excursions cater to various interests and, as with everything else, promote inclusivity, ensuring all guests can participate. From guided tours of ancient ruins to relaxing wine tastings, there’s something for everyone, no matter what their ability level may be.

The dining options aboard Seven Seas Grandeur are plentiful, from casual to fine dining. The main dining room features a rotating menu of gourmet dishes celebrating local flavors, while specialty restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisines, all accommodating various dietary restrictions without sacrificing savor.

And let’s not forget to mention that voyage fares include gourmet dining in the specialty restaurants (including those alfresco venues), premium wines and spirits, entertainment, unlimited internet access, complimentary valet laundry, gratuities, ground transfers, and a one-night pre-cruise hotel package for guests in Concierge-level suites and higher.

Regent’s Seven Seas Society cruise loyalty program: The ultimate guide

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Among luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has one of the most robust loyalty programs.

Despite being a relatively small brand with just five ships, it offers an impressive seven tiers of loyalty status as part of what it calls the Seven Seas Society. Each of the tiers brings a number of perks, some quite valuable.

As you start to rise through the Seven Seas Society tiers, you’ll find yourself rewarded with everything from onboard spending credits and free onboard Wi-Fi service to — at the highest levels — discounts of 5% to 10% on every cruise you book.

Those benefits work out to be real money in your pocket, as they will lower the cost of your cruise vacation.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The robustness of Regent’s program is all the more impressive, given that the line is one of the most all-inclusive in the world. Regent includes a lot of benefits in its fares — such as drinks and shore excursions — that other lines give away only as loyalty perks to their best customers.

That leaves Regent with fewer perks to offer in its loyalty program. Still, it has come up with some creative ways to reward its most loyal fans, including several that will make a big impact on their wallets.

Ways to earn points

The points-earning system for the Seven Seas Society program is about as simple as can be: You will earn 1 point for every night you stay on a Regent ship.

That’s it. There are no bonus points for staying in a top suite, as there are at some lines. Nor will you get extra points for spending certain amounts of money with the line, as is sometimes the case.

The only exception to the above is for solo cruisers who pay a “single supplement” of 75% or more to stay in a cabin designed for two. They get 2 points for every night they stay on a ship.

For the most part, though, if you take a 10-night cruise with Regent, you will get 10 points (which the line calls “nights”). Take a 20-night cruise, and you will get 20 points.

Related: 5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

Note that in most cases, your points will accrue upon completion of the cruise on which they are earned. In the case of Regent’s longer Grand Voyages and World Cruises, you’ll see your points pop into your account at the end of each official segment of the trip. (You can access your account and more information about Regent’s loyalty program at the Regent website ).

Either way, though, if the number of nights you are sailing during a cruise will elevate you to the next tier of rewards, you will enjoy instant recognition at the higher tier from the moment you board — a great feature of the program in our eyes.

One notable caveat to points earning in the program: You only will get credit for nights where you actually are present on a Regent ship. If you have to leave a cruise early, you won’t earn points for the nights you are not on board. You also won’t earn points for any nights spent in hotels as part of Regent’s pre- and post-cruise hotel and land programs.

Seven Seas Society tiers and benefits

There are seven tiers in the Seven Seas Society program:

  • Bronze (7-20 nights)
  • Silver (21-74 nights)
  • Gold (75-199 nights)
  • Platinum (200-399 nights)
  • Titanium (400-999 nights)
  • Diamond (1,000-1,999 nights)
  • Commodore (2,000-plus nights)

Regent only offers cruises of seven nights or longer, so you’ll be at the first tier of the program, Bronze, after a single sailing. If you book one of Regent’s longer sailings as your first cruise with the line, you might even catapult into the second or third tier of the program after just one sailing.

Related: A beginners guide to cruise line loyalty programs

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Bronze) doesn’t bring all that much in terms of truly valuable rewards. The most alluring benefit at this level is the exclusive Seven Seas Society savings that are available on some departures.

In addition, Bronze members get:

  • Access to an online personal profile
  • An invitation to an onboard Seven Seas Society cocktail reception
  • Double loyalty points when paying extra to sail solo

The double loyalty points for sailing solo only apply when paying a “single supplement” of at least 75% of the regular cruise fare for a cabin designed for two people.

Upon reaching the second tier of the program, Silver, things start getting more interesting. In addition to the Bronze-level rewards, you’ll get priority access when making dinner reservations for the three main specialty restaurants on Regent ships: Prime 7, Chartreuse and Pacific Rim. This is a great perk as it’ll give you a better shot at getting the dinner times you want at these eateries.

The Silver level also will get you the following:

  • Priority online shore excursion reservations
  • One hour of complimentary phone time every time you sail
  • A commemorative pin
  • A newsletter

At the next level up (Gold), the perks include all of the above plus a $100 shipboard credit per suite every time you sail. We love that perk, as it amounts to real money in your pocket. Plus, you’ll get:

  • Unlimited Wi-Fi for free with four logins for up to four devices
  • Two more hours of free phone time (for three hours in total)
  • Priority disembarkation at voyage completion in select ports
  • Choice of newspaper service from papers around the world
  • Exclusive activities on board or ashore on every voyage

The Platinum level brings six more hours of phone time and complimentary luggage tags, two perks that don’t get us all that excited. The latter perk, in particular, is something that seems better in an entry-level tier (though to be fair, these luggage tags are made from quality leather).

But the Platinum level also adds the use of free custom air service once per sailing, which can come in handy. It lets you call a Regent concierge who will help customize your included-in-the-fare flights, so they work best for your schedule. Otherwise, you’re stuck with the flights that Regent picks for you or have to pay an extra charge to change them.

Related: Look inside Regent’s swankiest ship ever

The Platinum level also brings a 10% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions (the line’s collection of niche or intimate extra-fee tours), hotel and land programs. This one perk alone could end up saving you hundreds of dollars.

As noted above, you’ll be at the Bronze tier after just one sailing with Regent. Reaching the Silver tier could take as many as three cruises if you stick to seven-night sailings. But you also could reach it in just one longer cruise.

The number of cruises it’ll take you to reach the Gold and Platinum tiers will depend on whether you do short or long sailings. If you stick to seven-night sailings, you’d have to take a whopping 29 cruises to reach the Platinum tier. But there are super long Regent cruises, such as a 168-night world cruise planned for 2025, that will get you almost all the way to Platinum level with a single voyage.

The elite level that makes a difference

We like quite a few of the perks available at the Bronze through Platinum levels of the Seven Seas Society program. But it is at the Titanium level that things really start to impress us.

Specifically, the Titanium level comes with four really nice perks:

  • Free private transfers between your home or the airport and the ship, within a 100-mile radius, on embarkation and disembarkation day
  • Free unlimited dry cleaning
  • An additional 15% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions, hotels and land programs (for 25% total savings)
  • Access to your suite at 1 p.m. on embarkation day

We absolutely love the private-transfer perk, which lets you start and end your trips in style. There’s nothing like having a private car pick you up at home at the start of the trip or a chauffeur waiting for you upon arrival at the airport. We also love the free unlimited dry cleaning perk. The discounts on shore excursions, hotels and land programs at this level can save you big money — more than $1,000 when booking some add-on land programs.

Related: The best credit cards for booking cruises

Getting to the Titanium level in the Seven Seas Society takes a whole lot of cruising. At a minimum, you’d need to spend the equivalent of more than a year at sea to hit the 400-night threshold for the tier. You could do that by sailing 58 seven-night cruises, 29 two-week cruises or three world cruises (the latter typically lasting around 150 to 170 days).

Best Seven Seas Society elite perk

Regent’s Seven Seas Society program doesn’t include a truly over-the-top perk, like the free cruises that rival Silversea Cruises gives out to members who hit certain milestones. But we do appreciate the 5% and 10% discounts on cruise fares that the line offers to members who reach the Diamond and Commodore tiers, respectively. That can be worth thousands of dollars when booking some sailings. Note that these discounts are available on any sailing you book, not just select Seven Seas Society sailings (for which, as mentioned above, you can get discounts upon reaching the Bronze tier of the program).

Diamond-level members also get one free Regent Choice shore excursion per voyage segment, up to $250 in value, as well as an invitation to new ship christenings (something that doesn’t happen all that often, alas).

The Commodore level adds two more perks that, while not worth a huge amount monetarily, are about as cool as it gets in the world of loyalty programs:

  • A commemorative Commodore officers jacket
  • A commemorative plaque in your name placed on all ships in the Regent fleet

The cutoffs for the Diamond and Commodore tiers are 1,000 nights and 2,000 nights at sea, respectively — levels that only the most dedicated cruisers can reach. But with years of heavy sailings, the feat is doable.

Related: Regent unveils epic, monthslong world cruise

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Regent customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Seven Seas Society members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits Commodore status (and gets that cool jacket) will remain at that top-tier level forever (or until Regent makes a change to the program).

Such “forever status” is one of the great allures of cruise line loyalty programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require members to requalify for status each year.

Bottom line

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has a robust frequent cruiser program with some great perks at its higher tiers. While it doesn’t offer a single perk that is truly knock-your-socks-off, such as the free cruises that a few lines give to customers who reach high levels of status, it brings significant discounts and value-added perks that begin at mid-tier levels.

This is all the more impressive given that Regent is one of the most all-inclusive lines in cruising. Regent includes so many things in its fares — such as drinks, unlimited Wi-Fi and shore excursions — that it leaves very little available to offer to loyal customers as an upgrade other than straight-out discounts on trips. But the line has found other ways to add value  — from free concierge service when arranging flights to a commemorative Commodore jacket.

Cruiseschip Seven Seas Prestige - Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Cruiseschip Seven Seas Prestige - Regent Seven Seas Cruises

A startup wants travelers to live on a cruise ship for 3 years. See what the $181,790 global voyage promises.

  • GlobeCruises says its three-year world cruise will sail in April 2025, starting at $181,790 per person.
  • The voyage would visit 413 ports in 171 countries, although the startup has yet to acquire a ship.
  • Its CEO and COO worked for Life at Sea , a three-year cruise project that recently filed for bankruptcy.

Insider Today

A startup is inviting travelers to live on a cruise ship for three years as it sails around the world.

GlobeCruises says its 1,095-day voyage will depart Barcelona on April 12, 2025. From there, it would visit 413 ports in 171 countries before concluding in Southampton, England, on April 13, 2028.

Along the way, travelers could experience the night markets of Taiwan, the beaches of Brazil, the wildlife of Tanzania, and the landmarks of Spain.

The startup's COO, Robert Dixon, told Business Insider that the voyage was designed to chase warm weather. But according to its itinerary , destinations will stretch as far south as chilly Antarctica and as far north as Longyearbyen, Norway.

Dixon said the cruise would also dock overnight at 355 of the 413 ports — in some cases for as long as seven nights, like in Singapore — giving guests more time to explore the destinations.

Inside cabins start at about $181,790 per person, while the more luxurious suites cost $624,150 per person. The cheapest option costs about $166 per person and day.

Demand has been growing in recent years for extended cruises, but their duration is typically several months, not years. Oceania's 2024 six-month world cruise sold out within 30 minutes of reservations opening in 2022, the premium cruise line said at the time. Cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea operate annual around-the-world sailings, most of which are capped at four to six months.

GlobeCruises is promising an activity-filled ship

GlobeCruises says its vessel will have amenities like a gym, a movie theater, a nightclub, and rentable offices. To pass the time, guests could take a dip in the pool, crack open a new book in the library, or relax in the spa.

Kendra Holmes, GlobeCruises' CEO, said she envisions at least two pools and restaurants and "as many bars and lounges" as possible, but no casino — which is a popular feature of some cruises.

The company also promises a scuba diving certification program and homeschooling opportunities for its youngest guests.   The ship would host entertainers and chefs local to the port stops, as well.

Related stories

The concept is similar to Life at Sea

GlobeCruises' plans are similar to those of now-defunct Life at Sea Cruises . The latter canceled its planned three-year voyage in November 2023, two weeks before its departure, after failing to secure enough funding to purchase a ship.

Dixon and Holmes previously worked with Life at Sea. Holmes served as CEO of its parent company, Miray Cruises , until her departure about a week before the company canceled its global voyage.

Dixon told BI that he helped develop the concept for Life at Sea and later brought it to Miray. He said he left the team in late October 2023, a couple of weeks after Miray said it couldn't acquire a vessel.

In January, 78 would-be Life at Sea cruisers sent a letter to Markenzy Lapointe, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, asking him to investigate Miray Cruises for criminal fraud. The letter accused the company of using about $16 million of its customers' funds to pay for a ship it didn't purchase.

In July, Life at Sea Cruises filed for bankruptcy.

The company's demise is "in the past," Holmes told BI.

"I can't dwell, but it's terrible it happened," Holmes said. "We all put our hearts and souls into it, and at the end of the day, it fell apart. I hate to say 'shit happens,' but shit happens."

To avoid another failed launch, Dixon said GlobeCruises has partnered with ship management firm Anglo-Eastern. The Hong Kong-based company has "expressed their confidence in the viability of our project." (Anglo-Eastern did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.)

But there is a caveat: GlobeCruises still needs a ship.

GlobeCruises doesn't have a ship — yet

Holmes said GlobeCruises would use investor money — not guest deposits — to pay for its future vessel.

Dixon told BI that he has already secured funding to "commit to" a ship and has narrowed the choice to three options that are currently in operation and would ideally accommodate 1,200 to 1,500 passengers

He said he aims to announce his final pick in early September and take ownership of the vessel in February 2025, two months before the start of the voyage.

In the meantime, guests can reserve the world cruise by signing a commitment contract. A 20% deposit would be due 14 days after GlobeCruises announces their ship of choice, and held in escrow until the sailing begins, Holmes said.

"At the end of the day, if we aren't able to get the investor support we need and we aren't able to acquire a ship, we're not going to sail," Holmes said. "That's something we're focusing on this time to make people feel more comfortable."

Travelers who don't want to pay at least $181,790 can book cheaper and shorter segments of the cruise. Holmes also suggested guests get a travel loan instead of selling their homes and cars. Some Life at Sea buyers had sold many of their belongings ahead of the ultimately canceled voyage.

Rival cruise Villa Vie could soon set sail

Holmes said several would-be Life at Sea guests have signed commitment contracts for her new project. (She declined to share the exact number.)

Villa Vie Residences , a never-ending cruise startup, has also attracted some travelers who've been burned by the recent demise or delay of other residential cruise concepts, such as Storylines and Victoria Cruises Line .

Villa Vie was founded by another Life at Sea alum, Mikael Petterson. But unlike the newer startup, Petterson's company already has a ship that could embark "any day now," he told BI in an email on Monday.

Despite the two companies' shared history, Dixon said there's no bad blood. He said he wants Villa Vie to succeed.

"I want people to go on Petterson's adventure," Dixon told BI. "It's going to be a door opener for the whole industry. It makes it easier for us because then there's a bit of confidence in this whole concept."

5 things to know about america’s newest cruise line.

The new cruise line launched in 2021.

Atlas Ocean Voyages has certainly made a splash with its triad of superyachts that immediately entered the Polar expedition market after the line launched its first sailing in 2021. Typically, cruise lines test out more tried-and-true destinations like the Caribbean or the Mediterranean when they start. Not so with Atlas though, which dived in “bow first” into the Antarctic market with luxury sailings at a lower price point than the competition.

That’s what set travel advisors a-flurry. They were used to selling luxury, once-in-a-lifetime dream vacations at the Poles for five digit-starting prices, a number this cruise line has slashed significantly.

These days, Atlas Ocean Voyages has expanded beyond the typical Polar trips, but to many travelers, says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor for Cruise Critic, it still remains an unknown brand.

Here are five things to know about America’s newest cruise line.

A fleet of three, and just three

Atlas Ocean Voyages has three ships, which it calls super yachts, in its fleet.

Atlas launched with World Navigator in late 2021, a ship that can hold 196 passengers (far fewer than its luxury competitors like Seabourn or Regent Seven Seas). All ships in the fleet have almost a 1-to-1 staff to guest ratio. The line has continued the same trend with World Traveller, which debuted in 2022, and its newest vessel, World Voyager. It began sailing late last year.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Vs. John Gotti III Results: Winner And Reaction

Apple iphone 16 release date: new report hones in on precise date, it ‘ends now’—donald trump reveals surprise assault on ‘crooked’ wall street.

Its fleet is all purpose-built expedition vessels, something that competitor lines have added after testing the marketplace, comprising Polar Category C- and Ice Class 1B-certified ships. And these aren’t the expedition ships of years past, they look more like billionaire yachts and are built to withstand environmental pressures in the same way those money makers withstand market ups and downs.

Atlas has ships in the Polar regions almost the entire year.

Atlas Ocean Voyages is the only luxury cruise line to offer Polar expeditions on almost a year-round basis with ships rotating between the Poles. It does not sail during April or October to either region. This past winter season, its entire fleet was operating expedition sailings in Antarctica. No other cruise line has doubled down in such a way.

This year, it has two of its super yachts in the Arctic. Its goal, say executives, is to take people to the polar edges of the Arctic and the Antarctic without charging what the competition does, but without missing out on the premium that such an exclusive trip would cost. That sweet spot is unique in expedition cruising.

A guest room aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages

It is also offering several fly-in options to the seventh continent so that queasy travelers do not need to endure the sometimes-rocky Drake Passage. Starting in the 2025-2026 season, the line will double the number of fly-in options.

Operating smaller cruise ships also gives it an edge in the buyout world of incentive and corporate groups that often book bucket-list vacations as a reward for employees. But, it takes time to gain a foothold in the market.

“It is always a bit of a gamble for us starting out with a cruise line we haven’t chartered previously,” says Jeff Gundvaldson, president and owner of BrandGVacations. “After completing three full-ship charters, with several more on the books, we couldn’t be happier. Our guests absolutely love the design of the ship and her cabins as well as the food and service levels.”

Smaller ships can visit niche ports that larger cruise lines cannot access.

The ships can reach the Polar regions as well as its growing roster of cultural immersion sailings through Iceland, Northern Europe, South America and the Caribbean. These yachts can squeeze into smaller ports and waterways , like the “Corinth Canal in Greece and Guadalquivir River in Spain,” according to the line’s website.

Atlas is a private company with no imminent plans to take the business public and no current plans to grow its fleet.

For now, executives say, the focus is on growing technology and online partner booking systems as well as expanding outreach to travel agents.

An epicurean focus

The grab-and-go market is complimentary and open 24 hours a day.

Its polar sailings are a mainstay of the brand, and they do not skimp on food and beverage (including a unique grab-and-go concept that is open 24 hours a day). But, it is the mid-season, Mediterranean sailings that the young line has turned into a foodie escape.

These cruises are branded “Epicurean Expeditions” and bring aboard well-known chefs and experts from notable restaurants, magazines and TV programs to interact with guests. They vary from sailing to sailing, which is one of the reasons that some travelers choose to do back-to-back itineraries to see the onboard programming and not just the ports of call.

The onboard cuisine often includes local recipes from the day's port of call.

Recent sailings have included food expert Mara Papatheodorou, contributing editor to Bon Appetit magazine, and chocolate expert Julieta Davey, also known as Mamá Cacao.

Other sailings hosted names like Top Chef Brazil winner Luciana Berry, who appears on Bravo, and Peter Campbell, who has had stints on The Food Network and a master pizza chef.

Their expertise not only provides entertainment and value to passengers, but it also helps the cruise line seek out unique experiences for its customers, too.

Many of the presentations and activities, including foodie "cookoffs" between guests take place in ... [+] the lounge.

Activities include live cooking demonstrations, guest lectures, guided port visits to local markets, culinary competitions with guidance from the onboard experts and the chance to chat one-on-one over a meal or in the bar with leaders in the food and beverage industry.

A new partnership with Academia Barilla brings its famous Chef Marcello Zaccaria, who has been personal chef to celebrities and diplomats, aboard select sailings to share everything he knows about pasta from how to cook it properly to what to pair it with during each meal.

Earlier this year, Atlas started its “Cultural Expeditions,” which it says will follow the same type of immersive experience (with onboard experts) as its culinary sailings.

Small ships, big aspirations (especially for sustainability)

The pool deck has two whirlpools and is ringed by a jogging track one deck above it.

While the three super yachts are small (fewer than 200 passengers), they offer plenty of private space with decks at the front and back of the ship for those that don’t want to sit by the main pool.

The size of a smaller ship also allows it the ability to call on niche destinations that the bigger lines cannot visit (even luxury brands like Seabourn and Silversea).

Another element that has been a part of Atlas from the start is having a zero-waste operation in the kitchens. For example, things like onion skins might be turned into onion powder used in sauces for other dishes. Ideally, each sailing would disembark with minimal fruit and vegetables remaining.

Outdoor dining offers a second restaurant option.

Historical data, like with airlines, helps the cruise line plan for the percentage of different food items to provision for a particular sailing, depending on the audience, destination or length of the cruise. This prevents waste of food items that could otherwise go bad.

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style, and since the buffets are heated or chilled in different areas, the cruise line can share leftover dishes with staff in addition to their regular menus. This is a popular perk for cruise staff, but also helps reduce waste.

Atlas Ocean Voyages is focused on operating a sustainable cruise line.

Any food waste gets sent to the pulper, which like on other ships, reduces it to a mulch-like substance that can be used as compost. It really is a zero-waste process. Bones are the only thing that cannot be put in the pulper.

It is not just above deck where the cruise line pays attention to the environment, but below deck, too. The ships are built to respect the underwater life by using a hydro-jet propulsion system that does not disturb marine life, giving passengers the chance to follow marine migrations on some voyages. This is similar to what Celebrity uses in the Galapagos, for example.

More inclusions than expected

Drinks, meals and entertainment are all included in the cruise fare. Cruise directors do double duty ... [+] as performers on many evenings.

Since this line tends to price lower than other smaller ships, the expectation from many travel advisors was that there would be fewer inclusions, but not so says Gray Faust. Atlas includes a long list of extras for all cabins like free minibars and all-hours room service (alcohol is part of the deal), a guided culinary excursion on each sailing and prepaid gratuities. While these might vary by itinerary, the idea is that the cruise line offers more for the discerning traveler than what others might.

The addition of some shore excursions and gratuities puts it in the window of lines like Viking, which have taken the small-ship market by storm in an effort to bring a more exclusive experience to sailors.

Some activities are complimentary, but others carry a fee.

Atlas does not provide complimentary shore excursions in each port of call, however. They sell options of varying lengths and price points. On Polar expeditions, its Zodiac landings are included, but additional activities like kayaking and overnight camping are not.

Onboard entertainment is another area that may surprise. There is a theater, but it is used more for presentations rather than revue shows although live entertainment is a nightly event in the ship’s bars and lounges.

A “second guest sails free” promotion offered outside of peak Polar sailing season has proven popular as Atlas works to build its name. It end Sept. 30 although executives say another promotion will replace it.

An evolved experience

Zephyr Lounge is an outdoor deck popular throughout the day.

When the brand first launched, it had a few service hiccups. But, that does not seem to be the norm anymore, says Gray Faust.

“When Atlas launched in 2021, it positioned itself more as a top-of-the-line luxury brand, which meant it was competing with well-established cruise lines that have been providing amenities such as caviar on demand and butler service for decades. That's a high bar of entry, particularly when we've seen other companies, such as Ritz-Carlton and, soon, Four Seasons, enter that space.”

She noted occasional service hiccups, but that the line has been making strides and correcting that fairly quickly.

Atlas ships sail in the Polar regions almost all year.

Don Bucolo of EatSleepCruise.com agrees, saying that he has noticed more diverse menus, better food flavor and improved service after sailing the line for the second time.

“We were amazed how a few crew members we met on our first sailing remembered us and quickly recalled our drink orders,” says Bucolo. “That level of detail is something you rarely find on larger cruise ships.”

According to Gray Faust, the line hired key industry veterans in 2022 to help with execution.

Atlas executives say that “consistency in execution across all destinations and yachts” is the focus before adding capacity.

There is also a new loyalty program , Atlas Yacht Club, which started earlier this year. Members earn cruise discounts, onboard credits and welcome gifts based on the number of nights they sail.

Atlas yachts have numerous outdoor decks.

“Prices and value have started to build a cadre of loyal guests; meanwhile, the line has worked hard to improve its service and onboard product,” Gray Faust adds.

She praises the onboard amenities that are a standout for small expedition shops. They include things like L’Occitane toiletries in the showers with fantastic pressure and multi-head nozzles, more than one dining option each night (all included) and plentiful power outlets.

While noting great value, Bucolo’s shares that the atmosphere is more relaxed and less stuffy than other more expensive, luxury cruise lines.

Atlas specializes in expedition sailings.

Atlas Ocean Voyages seems to have tapped into a void in the cruise space where price and exclusivity meet bucket-list itineraries. Only time will tell if this strategy will work, but according to Gray Faust, the proof is in the pudding. This affordable approach to expedition luxury is something the cruise industry was missing.

Gray Faust says: “the expedition cruising landscape is more crowded than ever, but Atlas does seem to be carving out a niche for value and giving passengers an excellent trip, at an affordable price.”
